marius is a he/him they/them. distinct from a he/they though they couldnt tell you what that distinction is
jonny is any pronouns but will shoot you if you get it wrong
brian is any and is genuinely indifferent, likes em all
ivy is any, but has vague preferences day to day
ashes is they/them all the time, will also shoot you if you get it wrong
raphaella is she/they, used interchangeably
nastya is she/her (saw someone say once shes she/her the way a ship is she/her and. yeah.)
tim is he/she depending on the event
toy soldier is it/its, as it is not a person (its own words)

Mechs doodle request: cowboy hats
Tumblr media
[ID: A small page of doodles including Nastya Rasputina, Drumbot Brian and Jonny D’ville. Everything is colored in shades of yellow and orange aside from Nastya, who’s colored entirely in shades of blue and small grey detailing on brian. Nastya is facing away from the viewer at a side profile, her face mostly in shadow from a cowboy hat. Her hair is heavily stylized and blocky. Veins in her face are visible. The next drawing is of Brian, grinning and pointing to a golden rose on his cowboy hat. The drawing in the top right is a much simpler drawing of Jonny on a horse, smiling widely. His gun is to the sky with a spiked gunshot detail behind it. Jonny has a cowboy hat. The drawing below is Jonny, eyes closed and mouth open, looking somewhat thoughtful. He says: “They just don’t get me.” The cowboy hat remains on his head. END ID]

[ID: eight photos. The first two are from performances by the Mechanisms. The third and fourth are of the Once Upon a Time in Space book. The fifth is a screencap of a tweet from the Mechanisms twitter account which includes a photo of a drum set. The last three are photos of Mechanisms outside, the sixth featuring Tim Ledsam and Frank Voss, the seventh is of Ben Below, and the eighth is of Morgan Wilkinson.
Image One: A black and white, low quality photo of six Mechanisms members on stage. There is nobody in the audience and the photo is taken from a distance. The room is the same width as the stage. Morgan Wilkinson sits on the edge of the stage, farthest left, playing the flute; Tim Ledsam stands behind and next to him, playing the guitar; Jonny Sims stands in the middle of the stage, holding a microphone up to his mouth; there is someone behind Jonny who is probably Frank Voss, but they are very mostly hidden, although the neck of a large stringed instrument is visible; farthest right Jessica Law stands in front of a microphone, with her mouth open; another mostly unseen person is behind Jessica, they seem to be playing a shouldered, bowed instrument, meaning it is likely to be Nastya's actor.
The band members wear some version of their costumes. Morgan has light skin and short hair; he is wearing a white, long sleeve, button up shirt with a tie under a waistcoat with shorts over tights and boots with socks. Tim has light skin, long curly hair, and short facial hair; he is wearing a white, long sleeve, button up shirt with the sleeves rolled up, underneath a vest, with jeans, and something around his neck. Jonny has light skin and short hair; he wears a dark, long sleeve, button up shirt underneath a light colored vest with dark pants and shiny black boots. The person who is presumably Frank is wearing a dark shirt and dark pants. Jessica has light skin and long hair; she is wearing a white shirt under a black uniform coat with matching black uniform pants. The person who is presumably Nastya's actor also seems to be wearing a dark shirt and dark pants.
The walls of the room appear to be black but they are grey about a third of the way up and come down white a bit from the white ceiling. The floor is grey. There is visible lights in front of the stage as well as equipment such as speaks around the band.
Image Two: A color photo of the Mechanisms on a stage, taken at an angle, so the stage it diagonally facing the left side of the frame. On the left side of the frame and Morgan, playing the flute, and Tim, playing the guitar. In the middle of the frame the shadows of Jonny (who is not, himself, pictured) and Tim are visible; Jonny's shadow has his left hand clawed up next to his head. On the right side of the frame Ben stands, playing a red accordion, with his body turned toward the camera. Behind Tim a black sheet is hung, while behind Ben and Morgan are cream colored posts and red curtains on the ceiling. There is a mic stand in front of Morgan and one in front of Ben. Morgan wears a red half sleeve shirt under a brown corset bodice with a hiked brown skirt and brown boots. Tim is wearing his typical white shirt under a brown waistcoat and brown long coat with grey jeans; however he is actually wearing his goggles over his eyes. Brian is wearing a white long sleeve shirt under a black waistcoat with black pants and a black top hat with goggles around the crown of it.
Image Three: a red book with the logo of Once Upon A Time In Space sits on a mid toned wooden table with a pair of welding goggles on them. The logo is a tall black palace with a crown shape above it, over an open book, with stars between the crown and book. The goggles are made of medium brown leather with brass around the edges of the eye pieces and green lenses.
Image Four: The book from the previous image opened. The page that is centered is titled with "Once Upon A Time (In Space)" which is framed. Under this it reads "Being an account of the last years of Old King Cole and the circumstances precipitating his fall from power, as witnessed by the pyrate crew of the Aurora." A small portion of another page is visible which writing in various hand writings on it, which read "hope you enjoy!" and "killed in the" and "-hanisms" and "-an." It is on the same wooden surface from the last image.
Image Five: a screencap of a twitter search for "from:TheMechanisms nastya." Two tweets are included.
Tweet One is from 8 March 2014. It reads "And lo, portents were there that the DRUMBOT [drumbot] would return, and play the drum like he's fucking supposed to. / Nastya." This is followed by a photo of a set of drums made up of a purple bass drum with two matching, attached toms, a blue snare, and three cymbals. These drums are in a white walled room on a light colored carpet, in front of an organ and a radiator with other probable instruments propped up against the wall and in the corner. This tweet has three retweets and eight likes.
Tweet Two is from 22 Feb 2014. It reads "You lot are welcome to it. /Nastya."
In both tweets "Nastya" is bold.
Image Six: Tim and Frank stand back to back, holding their guitar and bass, respectively, in front of a body of grey water which is directly in front of a stone building. Tim's head is facing toward the camera, while Frank is looking down toward their instrument.
Tim has light skin, shoulder length curly brown hair, and short brown facial hair. He wears a long sleeve white shirt under a vest that appears to be camo patterned with faded blue jeans and a brown leather belt. Over his face he wears a more modern pair of welding goggles than he typically has; this pair have black lenses set into a green plastic frame and skirt. He is looking towards the camera. Tim's guitar is acoustic and made of light wood on the front and darker wood around the sides and for the neck and head. The guitar strap is black and has a red square on it.
Frank has medium brown skin and shoulder length, straightened, dark brown hair. They wear a white, long sleeve shirt, untucked, with a light grey tie under a black waistcoat with black jeans. They wear a thin, black sleeve garter on their visible arm and a black fedora. Their bass is electric, has five strings, and the body of it is a slate blue color.
Image Seven: A photo of Ben diagonally facing toward the viewer's left. He is hold his drumsticks, crossed, in front of him and is looking at the camera. He is standing on green grass with some leaves on it, a willow type tree is behind him as well as a paved road, on that road a silver hatchback car is parked, on the other side of the street some buildings are visible, some of which are red brick and some are white plaster or siding.
Ben has light skin, chin length, curly, reddish brown hair, and matching short facial hair. He wears a white button up shirt under a black, brown, and gold patterned waistcoat, under a black overcoat, with dark jeans. He has a top hat on his head which has retro welding goggles around the crown and a second pair of drumsticks tucked in the band.
Image Eight: A photo of Morgan sitting on grass in front of the same water and buildings visible in Image Six. He is cross-legged and hunched over; in his right hand, rested against his thigh, he holds his flute, while his left is holding a book, open enough to hold the page, but closed enough to protect the pages or not allow others to see inside; this book is stacked on top of two other books. Behind Morgan and to the left side of the frame Ben's left left and the lower part of his left arm can be seen. He holds one drumstick in his visible hand. His clothes are the dame as those in the previous photo, but now it is visible that he is wearing an olive green canvas belt, as the end of it is hanging loose.
Morgan has light skin and short, straight, dyed hair. It is mostly bright red, but the bangs are a lilac color and the sideburns are a medium teal. He is looking toward the right side of the frame, so his face is mostly in profile. He wears a dark grey, collared shirt, with a muted blue and orange patterned tie, under a dark red waistcoat, with dark brown, possibly corduroy, trousers. On his feet he wears black boots. He has a silver stud type earring in his visible lobe.
Of the books in front of him, the bottom one is the largest; it is bright red, including the edges of the pages and the Title is debossed on the spine in gold; it is hard to make out, but reads "[cut off] Great [too blurry to read] [too blurry to read] World." The second book in the stack is the smallest; the cover appears to be light blue and it is quite worn; the spine of this book is not visible. The final book in the stack is not much smaller than the first; it has a beige cover and the spine and adjoining edge of the cover are brown; neither the spine not the cover are angled such that the title is visible; this book is also worn, but not as much as the blue book. All of the books are hard cover and their covered seems to have fabric on them; non of them have dust jackets. The red book appears to be new, but made in an older style, where as the other two seem older.
End ID
Note: Each the label indicating which image is being described before the individual description (ie "Image One," "Image Two," etc) is in a bold blue font. Similarly, "Tweet One" and "Tweet Two" are in a green font. End Note]

NASTYA ART
Tumblr media
I do not yet understand how to add more than one image at a time, but when I do I will get the other blorbos up here. Anyway, this has already been put on Reddit but apparently Mechs Tumblr is active as shit so it's going here now too. Nastya as M (mechanic, or monarch, take your pick (king and queen were too gendered for these mfs)) of Auroras from the card set I'm designing. I love her. No, seriously, I cannot articulate how much I love her.
Also, no, none of this is intentionally meant to line up with the cards that each of The Mechs get in Who Killed Doc Carmilla. Just what I think would work.
Not sure quite how to do an image ID thing (please help I don't understand Tumblr yet), but I'll give it a shot --
Image ID: Drawing of Nastya Rasputina based on a real image of her. She has her eyes closed, and is playing the violin. There is a gear in the background. The image is mirrored along the x-axis. On her right in both halves of the image, there is a blue 'M' and a small drawing of The Aurora, which are indications of her suit and rank in a set of cards. End of image ID.
(Thank you to the person who explained how to image ID a bit better in their reblog, I think I've done it right but please correct me if I'm wrong)
Okay thanks I'll stop rambling now. Actually, no, I have no idea how social Tumblr is but if anyone has suggestions for what object-thingy I should do for the background of either Carmilla or Marius then please, please, PLEASE give me suggestions. I'm getting closer to having to draw them, and I still don't know what to do for the background.
Now I'll actually stop rambling, sorry, I hope you enjoy the space lesbian, goodbye.

AFAIK they didn't say what happened to Aurora after the crew all died.
Maybe in some far off corner of space and time, the Last Remaining Mechanism and The Mechanisms' Empty Home reunite.
Been meaning to make this post for a while and since I'm already crying about Out and surrounding events and songs etc here we go.
The thing that gets me. That really fucking GETS me about Out?
It was before Death to the Mechanisms- before, probably, it was decided that the Mechanisms could even die. It was also Nastya's Canon death. At the end, we can see, that her thoughts reflect this.
She was expecting to come back.
She wasn't expecting this to be her End. She thought she would wake up.

I'm not asked about the specifics of the actual singers but the head canons everyone else has about the characters. I know how I head canon it but I'm curious what other people think.
Might also make one for who the tallest is, we'll see.

Round 2, Match 54: Shōta Aizawa vs. Doctor Carmilla
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Submitted kids:
Shōta Aizawa: Class 1-A, minus Mineta, plus Shinsou Hitoshi (total of 20 kids). Mainly Eri, Shinsou, and Midoriya
Doctor Carmilla: Jonny d'Ville, Nastya Rasputina, The Toy Soldier, The Starship Aurora, Ashes O'Reilly, Drumbot Brian, Gunpowder Tim, Ivy Alexandria, Raphaella la Cognizi * Marius von Raum
Propaganda under the cut!
Shōta Aizawa:
1. “This grumpy teacher pretends not to care about his students, sleeps during his own classes and why talk when you can also make annoying children silent by (harmless) force? Yet he loves them and they love him while he doesn't show it all that often.”
2. “He didn't mean to adopt them yet he did and he is grumpy about it. If he goes "those are my kids, damn it" it's not to someone else, it's to himself, with the damn it being a "fuck, why". Yet he is so 100% willing to risk his life for them. Because they *are* his kids now.”
3. “Idk the man is so tired what can I say. Harsh as australias wildlife but bc he doesn’t want them to actually die in the field so he’s trying to make them give up on signing up to risk your lives every day. I just submitted kiryu and I think that kiryu, bruce, and aizawa are soul sisters. They are all very special to me”
4. “Oh he tries so hard to stay scary and detached, keeps threatening to expel students, keeps saying he hates kids, and look at him now. Missing several pieces and risked death multiple times to protect them, at least 3 classes of ~20 students each lowkey adoring him, and literally canonically (not said out loud but it's basically official come on, they live together) adopted a little girl that was found by the protagonist and saved from the mafia. Also personally took the matter in his own hands when another department's student (so not one of his) showed a desire to change course, so much that even if this kid has living and loving parents he's often Aizawa's adopted family in fanfiction.”
Doctor Carmilla:
“Morally ambiguous mother who adopts her kids and makes them immortal both to have a family and a band. What can I say. This family is incredibly dysfunctional and so very fun.”

On Mechanisation, Identity, And (Origin) Stories
My central point is this:
With the possible exceptions of Ashes (seemingly consented to mechanisation knowing what would happen) and Raphaella (there is so little knowledge about her in general), none of the mechanisms are in any way the people they were pre-mechanisation.
Gunpowder Tim is not Tim the soldier, Bertie’s friend.
‘Baron’ ‘Doctor’ Marius von Raum is not Byron von Raum.
Nastya Rasputina is not Princess Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova of Cyberia.
DrumBot Brian is not Brian the necromancer, not Brian the stranded, not even the Brian of flesh and bone.
The Toy Soldier didn’t exist pre-mechanisation (and doesn’t ever exist, really).
Ivy Alexandria is not the librarian who died in the lunar war, she doesn’t even remember being there.
And by all that is holy, Jonny D’Ville is not, in any way, Jonathan Vangelis.
(And of course, the Aurora is not the Aurora is not the Aurora)
All the people they used to be (or may have used to be, i wouldn’t trust anything they say as fact) took up so little of the millennia-long lifetimes of the crew of the Aurora. Reader, imagine the first one-tenth of your lifetime. Then know that when the mechanisms were halfway through their life, the first one-tenth of their lifetime was about 5 centuries. It’s unfathomable. It cannot be fathomed.
And this is what’s so interesting to me about the ‘origin story’ songs and tracks. Take, for example, Gunpowder Tim vs The Moon Kaiser. While it is about a true historical event (in mechs canon), it’s much more of a dramatisation that happens to be told by people who were there, than it is a memoir. Just like how Once Upon a Time (In Space), or The Bifrost Incident are dramatisations. And that’s the thing: Gunpowder Tim isn’t the Tim of the lunar war much more than he is (say) Loki, and it’s the same with the other mechs and their roles (both vocal and instrumental).
They made their past into tales to be told and made themselves the narrators, and in doing so became detached from themselves, like they’re detached from everything else. I don’t think Jonny remembers where he was really from or how he first died, i don’t think Raphaella remembers her past, and i think the actual details of Bertie’s death are long forgotten. None of these things matter, because none of them need to matter for the story to be told.
And in the end, the mechanisms, trapped by their own narratives, out of stories to tell, bite the hands that feed them and recoil in horror at the bloody toothmarks on their palms.
