I have seen a number of posts about non-americans (specifically europeans) escalating "small jokes" by throwing back serious issues about us politics and how this is to gain superiority. And while I would agree that there is quite some window dressing and indeed a need to proof superiority I honestly think it's also that americans underestimate just how us-centric they often are even in discussions about social justice.

I say this as somebody who got to engage with various people in this kind of discussions in my voluntary work but also on the internet.

You got people who have their social awareness awakening on the internet (I think sites like tumblr and twitter can help to educate amd mobilize people but damn are they bad for nuance) and it's great I think because they get aware of stuff they didn't notice before. But the information they have is vastly focused on the US and for those from the US that is not in itself a bad thing I would say, because of course that's what gets people: The stuff directly affecting them! However many kind of stay to engage with things on a somewhat "superficial" level, by taking this information they read in posts and tweets and because of how social media works today they gain support for sharing that level of knowledge with others even if they never engage in actual actions to deal with the issues the point out.

Of course not everybody has the resources to invest themselves into direct action, and educating people is a fundamental part of activism, but... social media is I feel not nurturing actual education at times? More often it's about flexing who knows the most and the best correct terminology, and to show those who are "wrong" that they are worse morally.

This is a thing not specific for the US I would say, but one that generally comes up with purely online based activism. However, as much of the net is US centric just by numbers and who owns the sites we are talking about it skews discussions towards perspectives that are mostly applyable to the US... which some people seemto be aware off even if they got no idea about the way certain issues show themselves outside the US.

"In the US we got this thing called gentrification" for example is a sentence said very literally to me... Just to clarify gentrification happens outside the US too. It does, with a different historical context for sure but ...uh people outside of the US can know the term because it impacts their lifes too.

And here comes were the bitterness for non-USians lies I would say: It is a luxury to not have to care about the political and social issues of people outside your country, a luxury I would argue Europeans have towards a bunch of countries themselves, but nobody involved in activism, really nobody at all, can ignore US politics, because of its far reaching impact (Trump stopped US founding of ngos that offer abortion -> maternal deaths rise worldwide just as they did before under Bush just as an example).

It hits different when people from the US make an "innocent" joke about topics that are closely related to areas of conflict in your home country. I hits different when people comment your own political work with questions if you know this or that totally only american issue/or worse can't stop doing unknowingly the far right's work in my country by being all like "well you at least got no troubles with..." - The argument that racism in Europe is not an issue because it looks different from the US is literally a way for the altright to undermine the work done by activist against racism and yeah in the comflicts on this side you hear it often in a defensive way from Europeans (seriously people stop, racism is alive and active in Europe), but on the other hand you got people from the US claim that every example of racism brought up by people in Europe is "just" xenophobia not actual racism.

And the argument that we at least got good health care ignores how the neo liberal politics at work since the 90s also erodes the social system in Europe for decades. It is tiring to explain "No we also are fighting an upwards battle" to get drowned out not just in our issues we describe but also the ways we found to defend ourselves. And I am very sure it's just worse for people from South America, Asia and Africa.

Does the escalation seem overblown and smug? Yes. Is there often a part of superiority complex in there? Yes, too. However it's not just that, it's some real annoyance how we literally can't escape to have to discuss USpolitics in our activism, while some of the most basic fields of conflict go completely under the radar except for "innocent" jokes.

We could learn much more from each other and we can be stronger together too. The alt right is terrifying well interconnected internationally, especially the fundamental christian right: They got ties to the current government of Poland and Hungary, they were involved in Bolsonaro's campaign and election, they also chumped up Trump, and with that knowledge the current developments become much more terrifying as an international attack on women's and queer rights. Something many people in and outside the US point out since years.

If we want to fight back effectively we got to network as much too and I think being aware of cultural differences is key to do so effectively. And many people in activism are aware and use it as learning opportunity. But especially from people who just get into activism or are just used to us centric activism it would be just nice to acknowledge that their positions will - especially with the current way the internet is structured - always be just a bit louder as the rest of us. The same with us Europeans just shortly behind in terms of space we take over many other voices.

Anansi Khari is the first year dorm leader of Itan-ori. He takes on the MC's role in PSU, he's a crafty, mischievous and greedy person due to growing up with very little. But despite these harsher parts of himself, he was given the role of an unofficial therapist for the students. He was inspired from the spider deity known as Anansi, known to be a god of wisdom, stories, spiders and tricksters.

Appearance:

Anansi is a short boy with dark brown skin and 8 playful scarlet red eyes which peer through his messy mop of dreadlocks. Speaking of which, sitting atop his head and hanging down his face, Anansi wears a pair of messy black dreadlocks which fade to red near its tips.

The spindly boy always seems to wear a cocky, fang bearing grin as if he always has a trick of plot of mischief in his mind at every moment. (Which honestly isn't that far off)

And marked across his cheeks is a piece of white face paint. For as long as anyone's seen him in school he's always worn this paint. Reapplying it without fail day after day.

And finally for clothes, he's usually seen wearing his uniform in a very casual way. Around his neck are two multi-colored beaded necklaces. Beneath this he wears a grey turtle neck with rolled up sleeves, revealing a pair of black armbands with his magic ring on his right hand.

And around his waist is the sash that shows off his dorm. Colored black and orange, it later gives way to a silver web across the flap which rests atop his tied up blazer that's beneath the cloth. And finally on his legs are a pair of black slacks and sandals on his feet.

Oh and tied around his waist is a tanned gourd, being what his stave turned into when he became dorm leader. It's a reference to the gourd Anansi(myth) had which stored all the wisdom and stories in the world.

Personality:

Anansi to be blunt, is a little shit. He's a very playful and mischievous boy who often manipulates and weaves things to best suit what he needs to be done. This is mostly seem with how he handles getting the other dorms and students to both stop stepping on each other's toes and in giving each student who needs it therapy.

Instead of being honest and cooperative, using his analytical mind and a few other ways of finding information. Anansi often tricks and fools others into improving who they are. Even in his own dorm, it's never wise to fully trust the spider, because he always has some joke or trick to play. No matter if you're friend or foe.

Anansi is a very greedy person, often stealing, tricking, betting and playing for something he doesn't have. Even being the school therapist to assist Chiron was something anansi did was for a deal. He didn't do it out of kindness, but rather so he could receive a reward.

He's a person with a silver tongue amd a poisonous bite. Always weaving a web around those in front of him. And honestly despite his intelligence and skills in trickery, he often gets in his own way, getting too greedy for his own good, leaving him either beat up or in the same position he started in.

But while he is such a little shit, while he doesn't show it often, he can be caring and helpful to those who he views as being on equal or if possible beneath him in standing. He's always had a soft spot for people down on their luck. And often helps them as best he can. And especially for the slums he and Ruggie live in, you'll see the best side of anansi, he cares greatly for those there and really is an activist to get them better support. Even making many songs based on it. Though if he were to meet or see anyone from the Royal family, you are instantly marked for mischief.

This is a less noticeable part of Anansi but the boy is a giant creative nerd. He loves imagining stories sings and all sorts of other things in his mind while also making art. Despite his harsher parts he's a geek to be honest.

In summary: playful, intelligent, mischievous and at times protective and caring.

In Anansi's room, swaddled in a giant web in the corner of his room is a giant pile of all the "earned" items he's acquired over the school year. Often times you can see him swimming through it when he's bored

Anansi can produce natural spider silk and often uses it to get around, play tricks, and if he feels like it, weave actual stuff. He's probably made a subtle business about weaving clothes for people. Like need a bootleg expensive thing? Call Nancy

His fangs aren't just for show, they actually have venom in them. Though it's more just to numb and relax muscles.

Anansi loves playing drums, and is actually a really good performer and dancer, often times during winter holiday him and his family performed for the slums. Giving everyone some good entertainment and a rest from their worries. Anansi also often times drags ruggie to sing with them though he knows how well ruggie can sing and will tease him about it

Faux Activism and Exclusionary Practices.

Before I even begin this week's text post, I have to make it abundantly clear: All Black Lives must matter to you if you are going to be an "activist" or a social justice warrior. That said, let's have a conversation about what and why this new wave of activism in the black community is not inclusive nor real.

1. OUTRAGE

The outrage over the unnecessary killings and highly preventable deaths of black men and women is one hundred percent real and warranted. However, as I have noticed in my personal social media timelines, many people are unknowingly (or purposefully) excluding the names of trans people and non-binary people. This is abhorrent and frankly disgusting. Black people exist in every facet of life: from being a cis-woman who has a loving husband to being a trans man who lives with his life gay, cis-partner. Every version of the black experience is valid and worthy of protection and acceptance. Women and LGBTQIA+ folx have a hard time already existing in a straight, white, male dominated world. Imagine tacking on the fact that they are black. Now they experience two to three different forms of discrimination for things they didn't decide nor have the ability to change. If you are outraged at the injustices inflicted upon our people for generations, then you MUST also include your gender non-conforming friends and their experiences as well. Do not practice and exclusionary version of "Black Lives Matter." At that point, you are a hypocrite and liar because you, yourself do not see the value in the non-traditional (for lack of a better term) black life.

2. SILENCE

For the first week of protests and surge of political dismantling, we saw the names of nearly every black man who had died as a result of unjust policing and a corrupt government. Rarely did we see popular activists or celebrities mention the names of Breonna Taylor, Sandra Bland, or Atatiana Jefferson. Rarely did we see the same outpour of grief and support for the women also impacted by the world we live in. Never, in that first week, did I see a video or post about how to help locate the thousands of lost black girls snatched from inner cities. Last time I checked, the human mind is capable of focusing on more than one tragedy at a time. To not share the same loudness when it comes to the plight of the black woman is to be silent. As we have learned over the last few weeks: silence is deafening. It doesn't surprise me that our people don't make nearly as much noise behind the oppression and destruction of the black woman. This is the same community that had a generation raises young girls to "dress appropriately when there are men in the house," you know...the house the men are VISITING and you are STAYING in. The same group of people who deem black women ghetto for having multiple partners and children from said partners but praises men because "it must be so hard taking care of all those kids...as a man." The same delegation of humans who will bash a darkskin woman in order to praise a lightskin or non-black woman. Let me digress. The treatment of black women is so ingrained in to our psyche that we, as women, catch ourselves subconsciously giving in to these misogynistic practices. When my step mother tells me I should cover up because I live in a house with men, when my job tells me the uncomfortable advances from male customers is normal and I should just ignore it, or when the first lady of my church deems my knee length skirt too short simply because the old, perverted men in the sanctuary can't stop staring. It is done from a place of "protection" in their eyes but it stems from something deeper. To destroy the black woman is to destroy the black man, essentially. Every black man comes from a black woman. Before you try arguing in terms of "mixed kids with white mothers," learn basic genetics: the mixed boy with a black dad and white mom has a black grandma. His father's mother, and her mother and so forth, are all black. Do not be silent when Black women are oppressed, slain and abused. Be as loud as you are when George and Trayvon were taken from us. Be as loud as you are when your sport's team loses. Do not allow the black woman's life to be lost without at least trying to protect it.

3. PETITIONS AND DONATIONS

Yes, signing your name on petitions and opening your purse to the many sites created to help protesters is a great way to help make change but it isn't the only way nor is it the most effective. Stop bashing people who do not see the value in signing an online petition amd start suggesting other ways to be active in this fight. Organize something in your neighborhood, attend a protest, help localize the situations going on if none of the tragedies apply to your town. Educate yourself and a friend. There are many other ways to protest and be active in the community other than donating money you may not have or signing a petition because twitter user funyunslover48 told you to. This is a direct message to those demonizing others for not signing petitions online or donating online. Its not the end of the world if the petition with 400,000 signatures doesn't get signed by Sandy because Sandy has signed ten other ones today and doesn't feel like she has to sign another. I will say, as a counter, if you haven't signed at least one petition or donated anywhere of you could, then you are definitely not helping and you need to find some links and sign some ink. Period.

4. ORGANIZING

My only statement for this is to look at living, civil rights activist. Revisit history a bit and do what you can to try and rally our people together as a whole. We need, as a collective, to have leaders in the community who are bringing us together from all sides. Paris, London, Tokyo, and parts of New Zealand have all had BLM protests in accordance with the ones happening in every state in America. We must unite ourselves somehow so that the true message of what we're fighting for, globally, is not lost nor is it misconstrued. This is my only suggestion for this section.

In all, the practices that have been going on for the last two weeks have been positive and good mostly. However, there is always room for improvement and there needs to be room for those who we have been constantly ostracizing. Now is the time for black people of all sexualities, genders, ages, and backgrounds to come together and fight for ourselves. We cannot say that our lives matter if we exclude our women and LGBTQIA+ family. We are united by our shared experiences and culture, please do not let who someone shares a bed with at night deter you from that fact.

I want to be clear: if the question you're really asking here is "should I convert if I already know I don't really believe in God?" then I can't help you. I will enthusiastically recommend you find a community, engage, and discover for yourself if it adds a meaning to your life that you benefit from. But I cannot personally answer for you whether the specific combination of tradition, spirituality, activism, and culture that Judaism creates will be right for you as an atheist.

However, if the question you're asking is whether you can ~attend~ services as an atheist, regardless of conversion, the answer is yes, of course! We have a number of regular fixtures in our synagogue who are gentiles AND atheists who attend for a variety of reasons with no intentions of converting. They do not consider themselves Jews, but they are still important members of our Jewish community.

In other words, there are a great many ways to be an atheist involved in a Jewish community, even as a gentile. You can participate in the culture, respectfully and with joy amd enthusiasm as a gentile, or, if it calls to you, you may speak with your rabbi to create a stronger understand of what your path to conversion might look like. Either is fine and appropriate!

There are also a great many Jewish activist and advocacy groups which, while founded on Jewish spirituality and values, are not places of express and explicit worship (although I have always been partial to the "praying with my feet" mode of protest that we Jews are so fond of) which might be more comfortable first points of entry for you as an atheist looking to engage with Jewish communities. Sometimes the words and prayers and clearly-ancient-traditions can get overwhelming, and the emotional weight of a house of worship, even to a nonbeliever, is not to be underestimated. It can sometimes be more feasible for gentile atheists to do their early learning about Judaism from these more secular, socio-cultural organizations rather than diving head first into the religious depths of shabbot.

So yeah! There are many reasons and ways that atheists find their way to Jewish communities. You're welcome to engage in any one of these ways! Being respectful in Jewish spaces is as easy as taking the time to listen and hear during your early visits and asking questions of the appropriate people (rabbis, board members/committee officials, or people who volunteer themselves as resources to newcomers). Jewish communities are insular but largely very welcoming! So find a synagogue or an activist group and go say hi! Ask what kind of engagement they like to see from first timers. Acknowledge that you're new and unfamiliar with the situation you're in now, but that you're eager to learn. I promise that you'll find people are all too happy to help you find the most comfortable way for you personally to engage with their community.

For metadata discussions, Tutanota is an email service that encrypts metadata! They also use wind energy so ecofriendly too. Tutanota also has an encrypted calander and its mobile app is open source. Delta chat is an app that uses email as the messaging means, so putting them together could potentially be a secure option (I have not thought of that until just now so be warned).

Lastly, I wanna mention an app called PilferShush Jammer. They have an option to run a passive jammer, which will activate your microphone and prevent other apps from using it. Think, you have google activated to search when you say "hey google", this will prevent the google app from being able to listen for those words.

Never ever turn off your phone: rethinking security culture in the era of big data analysis.

Back in the 80′s if you were a pissed off anarchist that wanted to burn down a building, you probably checked your home for listening devices and made a plan. If you were the same kind of pissed off anarchist in the late 90′s, you  turned off your phone and encrypted your online traffic. In the 2020′s we’re gonna have to change our strategies once again. Intelligence gathering has adapted and so we must adapt too.

To get a head start at this, let’s look at how big data analysis is being used. To do this, we’ll need to talk about 3 things: metadata, patterns and networks. Those sound boring and complicated but I’m not a techy and I won’t bore you with tech language, I’ll keep it as easy as I can.

Metadata: In the context of online activity, ‘content’ means ‘the message you send’ and ‘metadata’ means ‘everything other than the content’. So, for example, if you send your friend a text about lunch, the content might be “Let’s go out for lunch” and the metadata might be “Message send at 01/04/2018 11.32 from phone 0478239055 to phone 079726823 using Signal”.

This information is registered by your phone even if the app encrypts your actual message. Your metadata is very badly protected by technology and very badly protected by the law. No matter which country you are in, most of your metadata if freely available to intelligence agencies regardless of whether you are a suspect in anything.

Patterns: Whether you realize it or not, your metadata has a pattern. If you have a daily job you might have a very consistent pattern, if you do not your pattern might be more flexible but you have a pattern. If someone wanted to know the rhythm of your day, they could very easily do so because your pattern is in the metadata.

For example: Maybe you use the wifi at your favourite bar on most Sunday nights until about midnight, you wake up around 10 AM and check your Signal, you use your public transport card to get to class every Monday afternoon and you spend on average 1 hour on Tumblr twice a day. All this is part of your pattern.

Networks: You have online networks. Your facebook friends, the people in your phone adress book, the dropbox you share with coworkers, everyone who bought online tickets to the same punk band you attended, the people using the same wifi points as you. Take your networks, combine them with other people’s networks, and clusters reveal themselves. Your work community, your family, your activist scene, etc.

If you are in an anarchist community that will probably be abundantly clear from all your minor network connections like going to the same band and knowing the same people as other anarchists. Even if you never liked an anarchist facebook page or pressed ‘going’ on an anarchist facebook event, your network is hard to hide.

Now, let’s say you commit a crime,

the kind that would result in some serious research. Let’s say that on Sunday night 3 AM, you are your friends go out and burn down a nazi’s house. It’s obvious that anarchists did it but there are no other clues. You use traditional style security culture: you burn your notes, you are careful not to communicate about your plans near technology and you do not leave physical traces.

But because you commited the crime that night, your metadata will vary strongly from your usual rhythm: you stay at your usual bar until 2 AM to wait for your friends, you do not wake up at 10 AM in the morning so you do not check your Signal or Tumblr until 1 PM. You do not go to class. Your metadata pattern is very different from your usual pattern. The metadata patterns of your friends are different too. If one of you is clumsy, they might generate a super suspicious metadata signal like a phone being switched off at 2.30 AM and activated at 4AM. You wouldn’t be the first.

If I wanted to solve this crime using data analysis, what I would do is:

let a piece of software run a pattern analysis of the local anarchist scene to generate the 300 people most connected to the anarchist scene.

let a second piece of software analyse the metadata patterns of those 300 people over the last months and identify the biggest metadata variations around Sunday night as well as very suspicious metadata activity

Illiminate pattern variations with an obvious cause or an obvious alibi (people who are on vacation, people who are in the hospital, people who lost their job, etc).

Do indepth research into the ones that remain.

Which is how, out of a massive amount of people that I couldn’t possible all listen to at the same time, I could quickly identify a few to monitor closely. This is how I could find and catch you.

So, now what?

If traditional security culture doesn’t protect us as well as it used to, how do we adapt? Well, I don’t have all the answers but for a start, I’d say: know your network + know your pattern.

In the case of the crime above: leave the bar at midnight, return home and put your phone on your bedside table. Check the apps you check before going to bed and set your alarm to 10AM. Return to the bar without your phone. Commit the crime. Wake up at 10AM and check your Signal. Drag yourself to class or ask a comrade to make the trip with your travel card and do not use technology in your home while the comrade is taking your travel card to class. Stick to your pattern. Never ever turn off your phone.

You might also be able to manipulate your network but that seems much harder to do. Not having a smartphone and dropping out of all social activity online is  a big commitment. Knowing your data pattern and making sure your data pattern doesn’t look out of the ordinary? Much less commitment.

Some of the old rules will still apply: don’t talk about a crime around devices with microphones, don’t brag after a succesful action, etc. Other rules, like ‘turn off your phone when planning an illegal act’ need to change because their metada looks too out of the ordinary. No one switches off their phone anymore. We look suspicious as fuck when we do.

This is just one idea on how we could update our security culture. There are probably other people with other, better ideas about updating our security culture. If we start the conversation, we may get somewhere.

Finally: we need to keep adapting.

As technology changes, more information is becoming available, including data we have very little control over. Smart-tv’s and ads in public spaces that listen to every word we say and the tone of our voice when we say it are examples. Data analysis projects are currently using license plate reading software on security footage to map the travel patterns of cars. A lot suggests they may soon be ready to do the same with face recognition, at which point the presence of our face in public space becomes part of our metadata. More information means more accurate data analysis. Our metadata may soon be too vast annd too complex to completely map and mirror. Which means we will need to adapt our counter measures if you want to hide something.

How do we keep it all under the radar? I don’t know. But let’s try to figure this shit out. These are some first thoughts about what security culture should look like in the age of modern big data analysis and I’d be very happy for any insights from comrades that have some thoughts on this.

Personal Mythology 

My explanation of personal mythology centers on the idea that our personal history is not fixed, and that we can transform our story through imaginative retelling.  This is an idea that I first became aware of when I read Franz Fanon’s Wretched of the Earth.  It is a compelling read, and in his essay on National Culture, Fanon places the storyteller at the center of the struggle for national liberation.  A culture which has been petrified by colonial oppression can, according to Fanon be redeemed through a storytelling practice which tends to “ bring conflicts up to date and to modernize the kinds of struggle which the stories evoke, together with the names of heroes and the types of weapons”.

Bringing conflicts up to date

In my mid twenties I suffered prolonged mental disorder.  I did not seek medical support at the time because  the model of intervention was the practice of psychiatry and alternative healing was outside my financial scope. The root of the struggle was no doubt deeply historic and was compounded by the reinforcement of colonial controls during my childhood.  Meeting my first husband allowed me to breakdown, disintegrate and finally construct a foundation for a Persona which would help me navigate life.  It was a very violent personal revolution and Fanon points out that “ at the level of individuals, violence is a cleansing force. It frees the native from his inferiority complex and from his despair and inaction; it makes him fearless and restores his self-respect”

Modernizing the struggle

Through reading I was exposed to a world of new ideas and I translated my historic struggle into a contemporary context.  Essentially the goal is the nurturing of a strong and healthy psyche that is able to withstand external pressure whether they be challenges we all face in the course of our lives or extra ordinary pressure such as the present oppressive regime unfolding across the world right now.  From this position I began to reconstruct my own identity as I prepare to deal with the new faces of oppression.  This personal empowerment  is nurtured principally through artmaking and engaging with an online life coaching programme aimed at developing physical and mental strength.

The names of heroes….

The heroes of my revolution were all story tellers. Each new story was an expansion of my ability to interpret my experience and a new lexicon with which to describe it.  I believe this ability to view things through a multiple of perspectives was at the very center of my survival.  I think of Hermes, god of poetry, freeing Persephone from Hades, and often contemplate the fate of young people growing up in a monoculture,  with no recourse to alternative discourses when presented with inner conflicts. Among these mind altering authors were Carlos Castaneda, Joseph Campbell, Carl Jung, Aldous Huxley, Kahlil Gilbran, Germain Greer, Robert Bly, Naomi Klein, Paulo Coelho, M Scott Peck, Deepak Chopra, Don Miguel Ruiz and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I note an atteaction to mysticism amd magic.

….and the types of weapons

Apart from the internal symposium of storytellers now shaping the dialogue with Self, my outward activities, which were transformative tools, included art, community leadership through art, gardening, writing, music making, herbology and adopting a minimalist approach to living. I began too, to develop a store of symbolic meaning which was informed by my areas of interest, dreams and psychic happenings.

Of course the knowledge I acquired was no quick fix for deep rooted complexes and I had, and still have, a long road of experiential learning ahead of me and new teachers to meet.

The Present

 Hawaiian sovereignty activist Hayden Burgess, wrote that there are five stages of decolonization: Recovery, Mourning, Dreaming, Commitment, and Action. I believe I have passed through the first three stages and am now embarking upon stage four which is where I  commit to my dreams and make them reality. During this stage and according to Burgess I must identify what issues to commit to. Part of being able to commit to my dreams will be to look into my darkness, this time from outside, and through the application of Jungian principles to see what complexes need addressing so that I will not be held back from Self actualization.

Printmaking

This is the commitment spoke of above. Through printmaking I am acquiring the skills to use image and text as devices for storytelling and become the liberator of the sovereign state of self.

Im not sure on how to introduce myself, what name to use, cause i go by many, both in real life and online

I guess ill go with Darwin, it was one of the original names i was appointed, the first of the 26 i was given by my friends, it's not been used for some time, and it makes me miss those days a bit, where i felt comfortable, when i felt safe walking through the streets, when my legs weren't tense all day from just the itching sensation of bolting away from everything and disappearing in the wildernesses for years, once a weak sneaking into the local library and reading, interacting with tourists after the search for me was dropped as to not spark it again, amd just become a hermit in the woods, avoiding all the hatred and the frankly disgusting ways people treat each other, but now as i grow older amd het more and more trapped into a world of corruption and hatred, as the desire to run away grows stronger but the ability to do so grows weaker, i have approached an impasse, i am loosing interest im things im passionate, im loosing the will to push on, im loosing the strength to persevere, i am required to be active yet i haven't built the strength to do so, i am not an activist yet i am required to be one, my opinions have either no or too much meaning and weight behind them and no one can agree on which one it actually is, im trapped in the cage that it's my mind and society starts to fill the room im in with water, saying that i have to find a way to swim, and no one being there to help me swim without roping me into there cause, i don't want to joint the communists, or the capitalists, or the anarchists, i just want to be who i am, and im not given that option, i am not given help or guidance and im required to perform as if im a master in my class, i used to love to learn for the sake of knowledge, now i don't want to learn, i don't want to be alive some nights, i don't want to be here anymore, i want to go and make my owm workshop, i want to become a carpenter or a blacksmith, i want to learn physics and pass on the knowledge to tkhe next generation, i don't want to be the one that overthrows the government, i don't want to be the one that ends racism, i just want to treat people kindly and make shit that people need, i want to be able to make a living helping a community by teaching them and making tools and supplies for them, i don't want to be the man that chamges the world, i don't want fame or money, i just want to be a nice guy that people respect for what he is

So why can't i do that?

Why do i get shouted at for not supporting movements i know not much about, why do i need to know everything, the whole of the us is at war with itself, people protesting, rioting, the police using WW2 nazi propaganda tactics, the news covering it up and bitching about the riots and that thwy take the talk away from the issues at hand when the media actively follows the protests instead of addressing the issues at hand, the onky two people that are actively portrayed by the media for the elections are a child rapist amd a rapist, who both have had there charges dismissed by the courts even though the amount of evidence is overwhelming, the army being called to fight the citizens in the streets for just wanting to get rid of the bad apples in the police force, and peacefully protesting that, the police force is taking a knee and helping the protesters just enough for a photo op and then its back to using non lethal force in lethal ways , in the Philippines there passing laws that give the government the power to declare most of the population terrorist and then prosecuting them for no apparent reason, just staying informed is a challenge, let alone having accurate sources and even then it's a pain to have an objective opinion on events because everyone is pushing a different version of the story, being an activist is a full time job, and not being one or not protesting with them is a good enough reason to get heavy fire against you, we live in a world that demands you to be able to preform with superhuman capacity every day day since you are the age of 12, till the day you die

I want to leave this world, both because i don't have strength to be a part of tje solution and also remove myself if im lart of the problem, but from what i can see, the routes to achieve this are non existent till im able to actually just able to afford to abandone everything, risk bankruptcy and pray that Tyche or Fortuna smile upon me

Who is Tschan

I am a 24 year old transgender Woman of colour a black woman although my jounerny began at birth chemicaly it has been almost several years now since i began my transition. I am a former model and now activist living in a now more conscious world aware of the narrative which however maybe revolutionary to see with my own eyes within my lifetime as many unfortunately have not, the beneficiaries only seem to lay with my caucasian brothers and sisters.

Growing up transgendered and being emotionally verbally and at times physically abused by those who are meant to love you the most I remember wearing my mother’s oversized jumper and pretending it was a dress using a towel or any cloth I could find to adorn and pretend this was my hair I remember saying aloud to my mother her mother uncle aunt and anyone who would listen that I am a girl and I want all the things that pertain to a young girl that I plan on marrying the only gay character called Tony if i remember correctly Tony from an early 1995 british soap TV show called eastenders because he was the only form to self identification of someone on the spectrum I could point at and say he is sort of like me but actually very very different…

And that being essentially beaten out of me (physically emotionally verbally mentally) and done so, so extensively that I had began to disassociate as a coping mechanism and just continued to disassociate from life as a coping mechanism and forget the very person the very essence of the person I was born to be. When puberty arrived and everyone was changing I didn’t change I grew taller but that was it my development was very late and that I’m now extremely happy about… my voice didn’t break or being to Crack until I was the age or around 17 I had no sexual desire whatsoever my body didn’t even attempt to grow bone or muscle density and I actually grew enlarged areolas / small painful fluctuating cup sizes at the age of 14. And when I took a visit to my doctors because it was so painful and enlarged lumps I thought I had cancer I was just told it was a reaction… which obviously it wasn’t it was hormonal.

At the age of 18 I finally sort refuge and escape from my family and was placed in supported lodgings with supportive gay foster father’s who actually to this day at that particular time were the greatest gifts I could have ever been given as they allowed me to be just that me and I had never had the freedom before and when I told them how I felt they directed me to the routes that allow me to be who I am today. Getting my diagnosis of gender identity disorder at the age of 18 was like having a huge weight being lifted off of my shoulders as for the first time I knew exactly who and what I was and that just not being an identity that existed solely in my head because previously it was too dangerous exist but something that was real that was quantifiable and that I could manifest. During my time talking to my psychologist and explaining my journey he brought up multiple flies you see growing up with a psychologically abusive and disassociate mother she took me to a few psychologists to try and have me diagnosed and put on mediations I never even required because she would rather me be anything other than what she feared the most… transgender. When my psychologist brought up my files and asked me date by date what happened when I was assented when my mother flagged me up I told him and he told me yeah there is a letter here written about your mother saying the issue doesn’t lay within Tschan “the issue is based on the mother and her refusal to acknowledge Tschan’s gender”… and that was a HUGE unbelievable mental weight lifted off my shoulders as part of the abuse i suffered and bullying in the home because i was fundamentally wrong and the abuse was and I quote… “deserved”.

I was also very early this year 2017 diagnosed with partial androgen insensitivity by my doctor who ran a lot of tests examinations and blood work as was getting corrective top surgery.

Dysphoria

What is dysphoria

Dysphoria is a profound state of unease or dissatisfaction. In a psychiatric context, dysphoria may accompany depression, anxiety, or agitation. People who have gender dysphoria feel strongly that they are not the gender they physically appear to be. For example, a person who has a penis and all other physical traits of a male might feel instead that he is actually a female.

That person would have an intense desire to have a female body and to be accepted by others as a female. Or, someone with the physical characteristics of a female would feel her true identity is male. Feeling that your body does not reflect your true gender can cause severe distress, anxiety, and depression. “Dysphoria” is a feeling of dissatisfaction, anxiety, and restlessness. With gender dysphoria, the discomfort with your male or female body can be so intense that it can interfere with the way you function in normal life, for instance at school or work or during social activities.

Gender dysphoria used to be called “gender identity disorder.” But the mismatch between body and internal sense of gender is not a mental illness. Instead, what need to be addressed are the stress, anxiety, and depression that go along with it.

What causes those to be transgender

Simple answer… and one that is rarely covered and if so not enough is: Biology, being transgender is biological. It’s based on the developmental stages in the womb and how the body and brain (structural white tissue brain matter and chemical composition) are chemically via hormones treated and allowed to develop.

A 2008 study compared 112 male-to-female transsexuals (both androphilic and gynephilic), mostly already undergoing hormone treatment, with 258 cisgender male controls. Male-to-female transsexuals were more likely than cisgender males to have a longer version of a receptor gene (longer repetitions of the gene) for the sex hormone androgen or testosterone, which reduced its effectiveness at binding testosterone.The androgen receptor (NR3C4) is activated by the binding of testosterone or dihydrotestosterone, where it plays a critical role in the forming of primary and secondary male sex characteristics.

The research suggests reduced androgen and androgen signaling contributes to the female gender identity of male-to-female transsexuals. The authors say that a decrease in testosterone levels in the brain during development might prevent complete masculinization of the brain in male-to-female transsexuals and thereby cause a more feminized brain and a female gender identity.

Dysphoria is something I suffer greatly from and can be quite an extreme example as I just do not have not and will never feel comfortable within my own skin tge only way to describe it is like having body dysphoria but solely based on gender and isn’t treatable in any form other than surgery and is something you have suffered from childhood that became progressive as a teen due to no early intervention and will never go away if not corrected. And the thing i hate the most about my body and the only thing I at this point NEED to change is my face… I HATE MY face and it’s controlling how I perceive and what myself to be perceived in a fundamental critical way.

Facial feminization surgery (FFS) is a set of reconstructive surgical procedures that alter typically male facial features to bring them closer in shape and size to typical female facial features.

FFS can include various bony and soft tissue procedures such as brow lift, rhinoplasty, cheek implantation, and lip augmentation. Faces contain secondary sex characteristics that make male and female faces readily distinguishable, including the shape of the forehead, nose, lips, cheeks, chin, and jawline; the features in the upper third of the face seem to be the most important, but subtle changes in the lips can have a strong effect.

Facial Feminization Surgery will not only reduce amd remove the male pysical characteristics but also drastically improve the quality of my life i could easily get a job anywhere and not have to worry about the whole trans thing being a deterant to employers or it being an issue… I will nolonger suffer from the lifelong prison that is dysphoria superficially I’ll always be the prettiest bitch in the room  (side eye) but most importantly I never have to disclose the situation or explain myself but only when and if I feel like it…

Although I am not ashamed of my past or what I am it would be nice to have the luxury to not be visible and navagate the world that isn’t always inclusive.

I just want to end this chapter and actually move on with my life and catch up on all the development years I’ve missed out on simply due to being consumed by my journey not only mentally emotionally financially and physically but also being a victim of circumstance (e.g.; abandonment and rejection, an abusive family, kicked out of education, homelessness, unemployment due to discrimination, being drugged and raped for 15 hours then being diagnosed with HIV because of that rape, harassment from the police and them sabotaging key DNA evidence with refusal to acknowledge a hate crime, the police dropping my case and my rapist continuing stalking me forcing me to move countries due to safety…) on a continuum being transgender woman of colour.

I want to go back to school, I want to work, I want to travel, I want to fall in love. I want to learn how to drive, I just want to be happy secure and most importantly just comfortable within my own body and I don’t want my physical attributes my medial past or what i am any longer deter from that.

Here are the reasons behind today's crazy chip deals

by Stacey Higginbotham Look what the internet of things has wrought! Monday, Broadcom, which was bought in 2015 by Avago in a $37 billion acquisition), said it would spend up to $103 billion buying Qualcomm. Let’s not forget that Qualcomm is trying to close a $47 billion acquisition of NXP that should happen some time next year. Meanwhile, Intel and AMD have surprisingly decided to team up to rival Nvidia with a new graphics chip. These partnerships and potential deals are an excellent example of the challenges that chipmakers face as computing and connectivity moves everywhere and becomes more commoditized. These are challenges caused by the growth of the internet of things.

The proposed Broadcom buy of Qualcomm would dwarf the previous year's chip M&A activity. The data includes announced transactions not closed deals and is complete through Q3 2017. Thanks to IC Insights.

The Broadcom takeover offer is an example of consolidation in several markets (communications, embedded computing and mobile) as prices for these components drop and markets shift. Meanwhile, the Intel deal signals Intel’s acceptance that general purpose compute can’t do everything as computing expands to more devices, and if it wants to succeed it has to embrace other architectures to retains its pricing power. That’s the big picture, but there’s also the mundane facts of day-to-day life as a chip company driving these deals. Making chips is expensive, both in R&D and then in getting the parts designed and manufactured. As consolidation occurs, companies can combine R&D and business lines across many different companies, creating greater economies of scale. In chip-making and design that scale does matter. Additionally, more and more companies are designing their own chips, whether it’s Apple in its mobile products or Microsoft for its servers. They do this because they have enough scale, and because the tiny tweaks they can make in silicon can differentiate their hardware or services in ways that leave the competition in the dust. Thus, the original chip vendors are left with a market that isn’t exactly shrinking, but one where if a customer succeeds, might graduate from their products. Let’s hit the Broadcom takeover offer for Qualcomm first. For the last few years, the average selling prices of many of these chips make by Qualcomm, Broadcom, NXP and others have been heading lower and lower. While companies are selling more of them, they are also selling them at lower cost and at lower margins. This is good for the internet of things because it means adding intelligence into a device becomes cheaper, but it’s a double-edged sword. Essentially as software started eating the world, the value now accrues to software, while the hardware that makes it possible becomes cheaper and almost interchangeable. That puts pressure on the chipmakers. Additionally, they too are getting more and more into building software to make popping their silicon into existing devices easier. A company like Whirlpool doesn’t want to spent its time designing boards or tweaking protocols. It wants to buy a product that “just works.” That’s good for the customer and helps the market expand because you don’t have to be a firmware expert to design these chips into your products, but it’s expensive for the chipmakers, many of whom have more software engineers on staff than chip designers. For Qualcomm there’s another challenge at play. Its efforts to swallow NXP (and CSR in 2014)  were all about getting more chips that fit into automobiles, RFID networks and smart home devices because it was seeing its customer base for smartphone processors stagnate. It was attempting to move from the mobile world deeper into the embedded world -- which is what NXP did when it acquired Freescale. As companies like Apple, Samsung, and now, Google, design their own chips for their phones and devices, Qualcomm’s core application processor business is under threat. That’s why we see it seeking new markets such as drones and robotics that also require a bunch of brains at efficient power consumption. As part of Broadcom, which also makes application processors, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other baseband chips, there’s a huge opportunity to combine communications product lines for servers, mobile and embedded devices. Broadcom, as part of Avago has deep ties in the embedded market through earlier acquisitions of HP’s Agilent and massive ties in the networking world with LSI, PLX Technologies and Emulex. If we’re looking ahead we can even see that Broadcom buying Qualcomm cements its dominance in embedded and mobile, but it also begins to push it further into servers. Qualcomm is one of several companies trying to use the low-power ARM architecture to build servers that would compete with Intel’s x86 architecture that currently dominates. Qualcomm even has a joint venture in China to build such servers.

Before we get to other other big chip news of the day it’s worth adding that if Broadcom does end up with Qualcomm the big question is what happens to Qualcomm's patents and licensing business? Activist investors have urged the company to sell the licensing division, which is currently part of of Qualcomm's fight against Apple. Spinning that out could generate cash to cover the purchase, while giving Broadcom the chip businesses it wants. Whoever buys those patents (Apple has a lot of cash) could build their own networking chips for smartphones and connected devices. Now, back to Intel: Intel and AMD are teaming up to put an AMD graphics core inside an Intel chip for notebook computers. This may not seem like a big deal, but it’s huge. Intel and AMD have been rivals since the creation of AMD. AMD has the only other license to make x86 chips and for decades it has lost money acting as a foil against Intel becoming a monopoly.   Don’t get me wrong. AMD has some awesomely smart engineers who have built technology that leapfrogged what Intel was offering at the time. But execution challenges, and even dirty practices from Intel always dogged it. AMD did see the importance of graphics processors early on. In 2006 it purchased ATI Technologies, which made graphic cards, and ended up with GPUs that would later help AMD stay competitive with Intel as parallel processing became more and more important in compute. It even sold the mobile graphics division to Qualcomm, which then used it to build better graphics into its applications processors. Intel is putting the AMD Radeon graphics tech inside an Intel Core chip designed for the notebook market in a deal that signals Intel’s acceptance of its lack of graphics horsepower. Intel tried to design a graphics chip back in 2008 but eventually gave up after realizing its architecture wasn’t competitive with AMD’s or Nvidia’s GPUs. Mostly the Intel/AMD partnership is about the new Intel recognizing that the heyday of general purpose compute is over and that the x86 architecture can’t do everything, especially in a constrained power environment. Under CEO Brian Krzanich Intel had increasingly embraced the concept of heterogeneous architectures from custom-made chips for machine learning to the ARM architecture of mobile. So why wouldn’t it work with its former arch-rival? After all, like every chip company in a world where non-custom silicon is everywhere and worth less and less, Intel has to survive. To do this, it has to make its chips work everywhere they can and ensure that they still sell for a premium. At a macro level, both deals are a result of more computing in more places putting pressure on pricing, power consumption,as well as the shifting market for semiconductor companies who may see their customers graduate to making their own silicon as they succeed. Stuck in the middle, chip firms have to consolidate to survive.

The Claims Of Klayman

Two orders of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia dismiss civil actions brought by Larry Klayman in response to bar charges

In short, Plaintiff, a self described conservative activist, has been a member of the D.C. Bar since 1980. Id. at 4. He is currently the subject of three disciplinary proceedings under the auspices of the D.C. Court of Appeals. The first, based on his representation of three Judicial Watch employees (“Judicial Watch charges”), is awaiting a final decision from the D.C. Court of Appeals. Id. at 4–5. The second, based on his representation of Elham Sataki (“Sataki charges”), is pending before the Board of Professional Responsibility (“the Board”). Id. at 7. The third, based on his attempt to gain admission pro hac vice to appear before the U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada on behalf of Cliven Bundy (“Bundy charges”), has been referred to a Hearing Committee. See Dkt. 7-2 at 55–71 (Ex. 1) (Specification of Charges); see also D.C. Bar R. XI § 5(c)(1) (formal charges are first referred to a Hearing Committee).

Defendants (disclosure: including my co-teacher at Georgetown) moved to dismiss on multiple grounds. 

As to his prosecutors

Plaintiff Larry Klayman, proceeding pro se, brings this action against the D.C. Office of Disciplinary Counsel (“ODC”), which serves as the chief prosecutor for attorney disciplinary matters involving members of the D.C. Bar, and four of its members, Hamilton Fox, Elizabeth Herman, H. Clay Smith, III, and Julia Porter. According to Plaintiff, Defendants are conspiring to disbar him or to force him to resign from the D.C. Bar (1) because they disagree with his “political beliefs [and] public interest activism” and hope to silence him and (2) because of his gender.

The contention of bias was grounded in alleged political contributions to Democrats and personal animus

At the first meeting, held on July 28, 2017, Defendant Herman allegedly displayed an “extremely hostile and disrespectful demeanor” towards Plaintiff. Id. at 12 (Amd. Compl. ¶ 52). Plaintiff alleges that she “refused to say whether she had had contact and/or met with Ms. Sataki” and, when asked, told Plaintiff it was “none of his . . . business.” Id. (Amd. Compl. ¶ 53). According to Plaintiff, Defendant Herman further “brazenly and openly admitted her bias and animus against [him] due to his political beliefs, activism, free speech, and gender, . . . when she curtly and in a hostile manner, on more than one occasion, stated . . . , ‘I [we] don’t like the way you practice law.’” Id. (Amd. Compl. ¶ 54). She also allegedly responded, “we couldn’t care less,” when Plaintiff noted that the Florida and Pennsylvania bars had dismissed Sataki’s complaints. Id. (Amd. Compl. ¶ 56)...

At the last meeting mentioned, held on May 11, 2018, Defendant Fox allegedly acted “in an extremely hostile manner” when he met with Plaintiff to discuss the Sataki Specification of Charges. Id. at 15 (Amd. Compl. ¶ 69). According to Plaintiff, Defendant Fox allegedly “lurch[ed] towards him and scream[ed] ‘this meeting is over,’” id. at 16 (Amd. Compl. ¶ 72) (alterations in original); “demanded that he ‘leave his office,’” id.; and, when Plaintiff “indicated that [Defendants’] gross prosecutorial misconduct would leave him no recourse but to file this instant Complaint” and “bar grievances,” Defendant Fox purportedly responded, “do you seriously believe that I would not welcome the opportunity through discovery to show how you practice law?” id. (Amd. Compl. ¶ 73).

..although one would hope that prosecutors would always avoid displays of disrespect and “hostility,” expressions of annoyance, frustration, and even anger are not enough to open the door to a federal court’s interference in a state court proceeding.

Plaintiff’s theory of gender bias is even more tenuous. He merely alleges that the two female ODC members “apparently see him as anti-woman” and “apparent[ly] . . . wanted to take disciplinary action against him due to his gender and activism.” Dkt. 10 at 10 (Am. Compl. ¶ 44). But he fails to offer a single non-conclusory allegation in support of that assertion. The one relevant allegation that he does make, moreover, contains a puzzling addition: He alleges that “Herman abruptly and in a hostile voice refused to say whether she had had contact with and/or met with Ms. Sataki” and that “this was ‘none of his [male] business.’” Dkt. 10 at 12 (Am. Compl. ¶ 53). It is unclear what Plaintiff intends the bracketed reference to his gender to mean. If he simply means to emphasize that Herman said that whether she had contacted Sataki was none of “his” business, that allegation adds nothing. But, if he means to convey more than this—for example, if Herman had used a synonym for “male” that he was not inclined to repeat—the complaint fails to offer any insight regarding what he claims actually occurred. In any event, it is safe to say that Plaintiff’s amended complaint would not come close to satisfying pleading requirements in a gender-based employment discrimination case, see Czekalski v. Peters, 475 F.3d 360, 364 (D.C. Cir. 2007) (discussing standard for alleging prima facie case of disparate treatment), and, for the same reason, it does not come close to alleging facts sufficient to invoke the bad-faith exception to Younger.

As to his arguments on the Cliven Bundy charges

First, the assertion that Judge Gould found that Plaintiff “is not guilty of the accusations” contained in the Bundy Specification of Charges mischaracterizes Judge Gould’s opinion. The thrust of Judge Gould’s opinion—as Judge Gould later explained—was that he “believe[d] that Bundy’s needs for experienced defense counsel of his choosing [were] more important than the articulated concerns about [Plaintiff’s] ethics, where he has not been disbarred or suspended by another bar association or proven to have engaged in unethical conduct that could justify disbarment.” In re Bundy, 852 F.3d 945, 953 (9th Cir. 2017) (Gould, J., dissenting). Moreover, although Judge Gould observed that Plaintiff “had no greater duty to disclose any possible blemish on his career or reputation beyond responding to the district court’s further direct requests,” he also suggested that Plaintiff might be faulted fo failing to inform the district court why his negotiated discipline “lacked effect”—that is, because “the bar committee” rejected the negotiated discipline as unduly lenient. In Re Bundy, 840 F.3d 1034, 1055 (9th Cir. 2016) (Gould, J., dissenting); see also id. at 1056 (“I do not dismiss lightly the district court’s ethical concerns regarding [Plaintiff], especially the issue of candor.”)

Second, Plaintiff casts Judge Gould’s decision as though it represented the Ninth Circuit’s “finding[s]” with respect to his conduct. Dkt. 13 at 6. In fact, he chastises Defendants for the “arrogan[ce]” of “assuming the role of . . . the U.S. Supreme Court[] to overrule [Judge Gould’s] findings.” Id. at 21. What Plaintiff ignores, however, is that Judge Gould was writing in dissent. Adhering to the views of the majority opinion, rather than the “findings” of the dissent, cannot by any stretch support a claim of “bad faith.” And here, the majority held that Plaintiff “was not forthcoming with the district court,” In re Bundy, 840 F.3d at 1044, in representing that “he withdrew his affidavit” and rejected public censure, “when, in fact, the Hearing Committee rejected it,” id. (quoting district court findings).

Finally, to the extent that Plaintiff contends the ODC’s decision to file charges before the Supreme Court acted on his petition for a writ of mandamus evinces bad faith or fraud, he is, again, mistaken. Mandamus is, of course, an extraordinary form of relief that is rarely granted. Cheney v. U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, 542 U.S. 367, 380 (2004). To say that a fact-bound petition for a writ of mandamus in the Supreme Court is a longshot is an understatement by any measure. See Stephen M. Shapiro, et al., Supreme Court Practice 668–69 (10th ed. 2013) (“The Supreme Court has long refused to issue writs of mandamus . . . to control . . . the discretionary acts of a lower court.”). Consistent with that high hurdle, the Solicitor General waived its response to Plaintiff’s petition, and the Supreme Court denied the petition on October 1, 2018 without requesting a response. In re Bundy, 139 S. Ct. 266 (Mem.) (Oct. 1, 2018). For present purposes, it is enough to conclude that bringing disciplinary charges against Plaintiff while his Supreme Court petition for a writ of mandamus was pending—even assuming that the ODC did not bring the petition to the attention of the member of the Board required to sign off on the Specification of Charges, Dkt. 1 at 6, 9 (Compl. ¶¶ 21, 37–39)—does not support a claim of bad faith or fraud.

The Court will, accordingly, dismiss Plaintiff’s claims for injunctive relief as barred by Younger abstention for the reasons explained at greater length in Klayman I, slip op. at 14–23.

Over 6.87 lakh Indians have returned under Vande Bharat mission: MEA

Over 6.87 lakh Indians have returned from abroad after the government launched the "Vande Bharat" evacuation mission on May 7 in view of the coronavirus pandemic, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday.

The fourth phase of the Vande Bharat mission, which is currently underway, has been augmented with the addition of around 120 flights between July 15-31, MEA Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said at a media briefing.

"These additional flights will cater to the demand for repatriation from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, Malaysia, Singapore, the UK, Europe, Kyrgyzstan and Ukraine," Srivastava said.

With this augmentation, this phase now has 751 international flights catering to 34 airports in India, he said.

Poet-activist Varavara Rao, who is an accused in the Elgar Parishad case, tested positive for coronavirus, reports said on Thursday. On Monday, the 81-year-old had approached the Bombay High Court seeking temporary bail owing to his deteriorating medical condition and the COVID-19 pandemic but was denied.

"Rao, another activist Anand Teltumbde and eight other activists were arrested in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist link case, which was initially probed by the Pune police and later transferred to the National Investigation Agency in January. The case relates to alleged inflammatory speeches made at the Elgar Parishad conclave held in Pune on 31 December, 2017, which, the police claimed, triggered violence the next day near the Koregaon-Bhima war memorial located on the outskirts of the western Maharashtra city.," News18 reported.

As many as 99 doctors in the country, a majority of them general practitioners, have succumbed to COVID-19, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) said on Wednesday, and declared a red alert for medicos and medical administrators asking them to raise their guard.

India on Wednesday reported a record single-day spike of 29,429 COVID-19 cases, taking the total number of cases to 9,36,181 while toll from the novel coronavirus climbed to 24,309 with 582 new fatalities, according to the Union Health Ministry's morning update.

Lockdown restrictions of varying degrees were re-imposed in a few places including in Karnataka's Shivamogga district and in Siliguri in West Bengal. Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant announced a three-day lockdown in the state from Friday to curb the spread of the disease while stating that 'janata curfew' will be in place every night from 15 July to 10 August.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya government said it has decided to close all entry points to the state between 24 to 31 July.

Karnataka overtake Gujarat as fourth worst-affected state

According to PTI, this is the fourth consecutive day that COVID-19 cases have increased by more than 28,000.

At present, there are 3,19,840 active COVID-19 cases in the country while the number of recoveries stands at 5,92,031, the health ministry said. Thus the recovery rate in the country is 63.42 percent, said the ministry.

Of the 582 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, 213 are from Maharashtra, 85 from Karnataka, 67 from Tamil Nadu, 43 from Andhra Pradesh, 35 from Delhi, 28 from Uttar Pradesh, 24 from West Bengal, 14 each from Bihar and Gujarat, 10 each from Madhya Pradesh and Telangana.

Of the total 24,309 deaths reported so far, Maharashtra accounted for the highest with 10,695 fatalities reported till date, followed by Delhi with 3,446 deaths, Gujarat with  2,069, Tamil Nadu with 2,099, Uttar Pradesh with  983, and West Bengal with 980.

Maharashtra has reported the highest number of cases at 2,67,665 followed by Tamil Nadu at 1,47,324 and Delhi at 1,15,346. The updated data showed that Karnataka (44,077 cases) has now overtaken Gujarat (43,637, cases) as the fourth worst-affected state. Uttar Pradesh has reported 39,724 cases till date while Telangana has recorded 37,745.

"Our figures are being reconciled with the ICMR," the ministry said, adding that 1,524 cases are being reassigned to states.

Goa to impose three-day lockdown from Friday

As many states continued to report new cases, lockdown restrictions were imposed or extended in various places.

A three-day lockdown with stricter provisions will be enforced in Goa from Friday in view of the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the state, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on Wednesday. Besides, there will also be a 'janata curfew' in the state from 8 pm to 6 am every day with effect from Wednesday till 10 August, he told reporters.

Only people associated with essential services and those having medical emergencies will be allowed to move out during the curfew and lockdown, he said. Local authorities will try to arrange for home delivery of essentials, he added.

Sawant noted that people are not wearing masks and not following the social distancing guidelines. He also said that the  COVID-19 cases in the state are expected to peak in next few days due to continued rains. "We are expecting a spike between 15 July and 20 July," he said.

In Karnataka's Shivamogga, the district administration decided to impose partial lockdown from 16 July until further orders.

Shivamogga Member of Parliament BY Raghavendra tweeted that the lockdown will be in place daily from 2 pm to 5 am from Thursday. Other than government offices, agriculture, medical and other necessary services, all other activities will be shut until further orders.

"Police have been instructed to take strict action against those gathering without maintaining social distancing, not wearing masks and violating guidelines," he said.

Streets remained deserted in Bengaluru as the government imposed a total lockdown in Bengaluru urban and rural districts till 5 am on 22 July. Following Bengaluru urban and rural districts, administrations in several other districts like Dharwad, Dakshina Kannada, Kalaburagi (only in urban areas), Bidar, Raichur (in Raichur city and Sindhanur) and Yadgir too have announced lockdown.

In West Bengal, the Darjeeling district task force on Wednesday declared a complete lockdown in 47 wards of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation for seven days, starting 9 am on Thursday, reported ANI quoting state tourism minister Goutam Deb. Containment zones in West Bengal are already under a lockdown, which was extended till 19 July on Tuesday.

"All the norms that have been in force since 5 pm on 9 July will continue. Residents of the containment zones are prohibited from attending government and private offices," a senior official told news agency PTI.

From Thursday, Bihar will go under a complete lockdown till 31 July. The decision was confirmed on Tuesday by deputy chief minister Sushil Modi, who said that the infection had spread rapidly as precautions were not being followed strictly in public places.

Lockdown restrictions are also in place in other places like Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad in Maharashtra and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala.

Meghalaya to close entry points to state

Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma on Wednesday announced that all entry points to the state would be sealed from 24 to 31 July to "unburden health, frontline workers". During this period, only emergency, medical services, essential commodities and transit movement of vehicles from Assam will be allowed, said Sangma.

The chief minister also announced that no wedding receptions would be allowed in East Khasi Hills district and Ri Bhoi district "for the time being" but said that solemnisation of marriages in places of worship will be permitted with strict adherence to protocols.

Situation improved in Delhi, but war not yet won, says Kejriwal

Meanwhile, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said the current COVID-19 situation in the National Capital is better than what it was in June, but the war against the disease has not been won yet.

Addressing an online media briefing, the chief minister said that according to the Centre's formula, Delhi was expected to have 2.25 lakh cases by 15 July, but at present, there are only 1.15 lakh cases.

He said had the Delhi government fought the virus alone, it would have "failed" and therefore his dispensation sought cooperation from the BJP-led Centre, NGOs, and other organisations.

"Our first principle was that this fight cannot be won alone," Kejriwal said.

The chief minister also said the AAP government will continue its preparations to deal with any spike in COVID-19 cases and warned against complacency.

Delhi reported 1,647 new cases and 41 deaths on Wednesday, taking the overall case count to 116,993 and toll to 3,487.

Andhra Pradesh reports record jump in new cases

A new record high of 2,432 fresh cases pushed Andhra Pradesh's aggregate past the 35,000 mark while 44 deaths took the overall toll in the state to 452. The latest bulletin said 805 coronavirus patients have been discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours. The aggregate number of discharges now stood at 18,378, leaving 16,621 active cases in the state, the bulletin said.

Maharashtra reported 7,975 coronavirus cases and 233 deaths on Wednesday, taking the state’s tally rises to 2,75,640 and the toll to 10,928.

Karnataka reported 3,176 new cases, of which 1,975 cases are from Bengaluru, taking the total number of cases to 47,253. The toll rose to 928 as the state reported 87 deaths, said a bulletin issued by the state health department.

Parliamentary panel tells govt to promote cheaper medicines

Meanwhile, a Parliamentary panel told senior government officials to promote cheaper and easily available domestic-made medicines for COVID-19, sources told PTI. During a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs, members also demanded that the maximum price of COVID-19 medicines be capped, they said.

Cutting across party lines, the committee members questioned why expensive medicines were often being recommended for COVID-19 treatment. Members named three cheaper and easily available medicines and questioned why they were not being promoted despite being equally effective.

The committee members also expressed concern over black marketing of medicines.

Zydus Cadila begins human trials of COVID-19 vaccine

In another development, drug manufacturer Zydus Cadila on Wednesday said it has started human clinical trials of its COVID-19 vaccine candidate ZyCoV-D. In this phase of trials, the company will be enrolling over 1,000 subjects across multiple clinical study sites in India, it said in a regulatory filing.

Earlier this month, Zydus had received approval to start human trials for its COVID-19 vaccine contender, becoming the second Indian pharmaceutical firm to get such nod amid a global spurt in coronavirus infections.

It got approval a few days after India's first indigenous COVID-19 vaccine candidate COVAXIN, developed by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech in collaboration with Indian Council of Medical Research(ICMR) and National Institute of Virology (NIV), got the nod for human clinical trials from the Drug Controller General of India.
