Fun Activities to Support Summer Learning at Home

Summer break is a great time for kids to unwind. However, the time away from the classroom can lead to learning loss and boredom. This can present challenges for parents to keep their children entertained while also supporting continued learning. From exploring the great outdoors to creative DIY, here is a list of ways to keep the boredom away while strengthening developmental skills.

1. Get outside!

Playing outside is beneficial for a number of reasons. It can help children socialize, learn new skills, develop gross motor functioning, utilize problem solving skills, and engage in imaginative play.

Head outside for a neighborhood scavenger hunt. There are many examples online or you could make one of your own that could include looking for: objects of certain colors, shapes, specific animals/bugs, or street signs.

Watch the Summer Olympics and make your own “events” at home. Some “event” ideas include: bean bag toss, balance beam (using a scrap 2X4), water bucket relay, water balloon toss, frisbee throwing, and a bicycle obstacle course.

Go to a local park and climb on the playground equipment, play hopscotch, practice your basketball or soccer skills, or play four-square.

Learn a new outdoor activity such as croquet, bocce ball, jump rope, or gaga ball.

Plant a veggie garden. Not only is this a fun way to incorporate math, science, and reading, but you can reap the tasty benefits all summer long (and maybe like new veggies in the process).

2. Read, read, read!

All reading is great! This can include reading junk mail, magazines, newspapers, or even the signs on a road trip. The goal is to keep your children excited about reading.

Go to the library on a weekly basis and check out new books.

Start a summer reading challenge at home, such as reading 15 minutes a day or setting a goal of reading one book a week.

Have a family book club. Choose a book to read as a family and then discuss it together afterwards. You can talk about your favorite/least favorite parts, rate it, or if you would recommend it to others.

3. Make math fun!

Family activities are a fun, practical way to practice and apply math skills.

Bake a cake

Follow a recipe – or try to double a recipe

Learn to knit, crochet, or cross stitch. There are many videos online to assist in getting you started or check out a book from your local library.

Make Wednesday nights (or night of the week) Family Game Night! Board games are a great way to incorporate math in a fun, practical way. Some of my personal family favorites for a variety of ages are Sorry!, Monopoly, Connect Four, Trouble, BINGO, Yahtzee, Chutes and Ladders, Sequence, Cribbage, and Shut Box.

4 Get creative!

Engaging in DIY/arts and crafts can help children learn patience, improve their fine motor skills, develop creativity, and provide an outlet for self-expression.

Gather smooth rocks and paint colorful designs, animals, or inspirational sayings on them. You can then place them around your neighborhood as a fun surprise for others to find.

Make sock puppets. Scour your drawers for old socks and use buttons, googly eyes, yarn, and fabric scraps to make puppets. Your children can then use their sock puppets to perform a play.

Create magic wands. Gather small sticks from your yard and use glitter, clay, pipe cleaners, yarn, and cardboard to make them colorful and unique. (These could also be used in your sock puppet play!)

Get together with friends to make friendship bracelets using embroidery floss or yarn. Check out a book from the library to learn how to make different knots.

Get creative and explore different mediums and surfaces. Try out mediums such as magic markers, watercolor paints, tempera paints, oil pastels, colored pencils, crayons, or permanent markers. Try them out on different surfaces that would otherwise be thrown away, such as paper, cardboard, plastic, styrofoam, or aluminum foil. The limit is your imagination!

These activities can be tailored to the age and interests of your child. You can incorporate open ended questions in each of these activities to further build vocabulary skills and enhance back-and-forth conversational skills. Whatever you decide to do, make learning fun! While worksheets and workbooks are also ways to continue supporting learning, they can be boring and children are less inclined to participate. A REVIEW OF RUFF ‘N RUFFUS

Bought this for 3 kittens so they wouldn’t be running the house while I was at work. It worked great at keeping them in. I was a little worried that the netting would rip from them climbing the walls but it didn’t because it’s made of a plastic like material not fabric like I thought. There was plenty of room for mama, 3 babies, a cat bed, food water bows, and a litter box. The only down side was thr bottom isn’t waterproof. I would have given it 5 stars but unfortunately the bottom isnt waterproof and I found out the dard way on my hardwood floors but then I just put absorbent puppy pads under it and changed them daily until the kittens got the hang of using their litter box. It was easy to wash too, I just took it outside sprayed some diluted Mr.Clean on it gave a little scrub then sprayed it off with the water hose and it came clean everytime. I’ve been using it for about 2 months and it’s still holding up good with no rips! It’s definitely good quality material to stand up to 3 kittens trying to escape daily. It’s similar to tent material but stronger and more plastic like. Would definitely but another of if I ever need another one. I don’t have to keep the kittens in in any longer but I now keep the litter box in it to cut down on litter traffic on my floors.

The best sports bra you don't know about yet!

The search for a sports bra can be a daunting one. Just as each body is uniquely different, so is each person’s wish list of features. For me the search for the perfect sports bras has been a journey, actually a quest to find a combination of features that to me seem basic and classic.  Currently I have 4 of the exact same bra meeting my needs but they are all wearing out as they are over 10 years old. My check list doesn’t seem outlandish and yet there are very few contenders that I could even find. Here are my seemingly basic requirements, ok maybe i'm a bit particular: 

Color, has to be black. It's classic, goes with everything and hides the dirt, need I say more? 

Versatile, I'm going to use this for all the different activities I dabble in, skiing, running, hiking, backpacking, yoga, working out, lifting weight. These are just my outdoor active hobbies. 

Functional, this bra has to be able to perform and look good under clothing, my Alpine Fit clothing to be specific, because of course I'm wearing a Rendezvous long sleeve or Ridgeline Racerback Tank for all my previously listed activities. There are going to be times that I wear just a sports bra, but that's not most of the time. While I love the aesthetics of straps everywhere, they just don’t work for the versatility that I need. Of course the most important part of a functioning piece of adventure clothing is fit! 

Simple and basic racerback design that isn’t too long. I'm a petite woman and I don’t need a sports bra down around my belly button! It's not the look for me. 

Padding, let's talk padding…Look I want some padding, actually require some padding. Its what 

makes me feel confident and good in a sports bra and damn it! I should be able to feel that without a removable cup! It can’t just be me that despises a removable cup. Those things

that float around all willy-nilly and  are always folded and never even with the other side. It’s not the only way to have padding. In fact it's the lazy way, trying to serve multiple different requirements with a half measure that doesn’t please anyone fully. 

Finally in an ideal world, my dream sport bra  would also be made in the USA with domestically produced materials. 

The Alta medium impact lined black in a small medium from Lume Six is what I ordered. Learning more about what Lume Six is doing just increased my love for  them. On top of the extended sizing, they are offering sizing options within one product. They have their standard sizing and in addition you can choose different band and cup sizing. This stands out in the world of apparel companies. It means you have to have a bigger product offering and carry more inventory. Which is an intentional choice since it is costly for a company to have a larger range of sizes. For the end customer like me in this case it means there are more options to find something that feels good and fits well. This not only  resonates with me personally but also with Alpine Fit teams since we do the same with our two different fit options of body sizes. 

That Alta shockling meets most of my criteria and the most important ones. It's not made in the USA of domestic materials and it's a high price point. Not sure if i’ll be able to replace all 4 sports bras in one go. Lume Six is a new company just starting out. They could check all of my boxes some day. I look forward to seeing what they do. For now i'm thrilled with they are doing.
