Story Prompt 105
As the figure approached, he couldn't help but chuckle softly. "You know, it's funny how everyone expects the hero to win every time."
The heroes, caught off guard by his nonchalant demeanor, exchanged uncertain glances before one of them retorted, "Well, that's how it goes. Heroes always prevail. It's the way of the story."
He shook his head, a wry smile playing on his lips. "Seems like a narrow view of things, don't you think?"
Their confidence waning, the heroes tried to muster their courage. "You won't win this time. We'll make sure of it," they declared, their voices tinged with desperation.
With a shrug, he replied, "Guess we'll find out soon enough."
In a sudden flurry of action, he overpowered them with ease, leaving the heroes stunned and defeated. As they lay defeated at his feet, he sighed softly.
"You never stood a chance," he mused, shaking his head at their misguided certainty.

“Breaking Out”
100 word writing challenge: genre: action/adventure action: eating an egg word to include: beam
Final version, 100 words:
The whole world is tight. Confining. You shift, trying to make space where there isn't any. Then: Crack!
You finally manage to uncurl, and get attacked by a beam of light, brighter than anything. The pressure shifts and noise become clearer: crunches, slurps, and cut off wails.
Shell shards dribble from a mouth larger than your previous universe.
Your old world had been tight and muffled. The new one is bright, loud and dangerous.
You grin and bare your teeth.
You hiss at the predator bigger than the universe, and bravely run away into the unknown, no ending in sight.
Longer version, that I liked better:
Everything is tight. The whole world is confined with no room to stretch and darkness is defused light and you shift your muscles trying to make space where there isn’t any. With a full body flex, there is a Crack!
Loud and abrupt and tight against your body, the confining shell shifts. The muffled cracks and crunches that made up the background noise of the universe have context. But the slurping noises and cut off wails are still unexplained.
You flex and shift and stretch and finally managed to uncurl, and are immediately hit in the eye by a beam of light like an attack, brighter than anything you could have imagined. There are egg shards everywhere but only some of them broken from the inside. Other shards fall from a mouth larger than the previous universe you had known, and grasping claws raise whole eggs to be crunched between sharp teeth.
You are wet and shivering and if the world you'd been in before was tight and muffled, the new one is bright and harsh and loud and dangerous.
You grin and bare your teeth.
You push your quivering legs to stand, filled your lungs for the first time, hiss at the creature bigger than the universe, and bravely run away into the unknown world, no ending in sight.

Since I have this huge Minecraft AU and how proud of it I am and how much my writing has progressed, I thought why not reblog this so people can interact with all my characters?
Uncommon Questions for OCs and their creators:
Send me a # (questions for OCs) or a letter (questions for creators) and I’ll answer
QUESTIONS FOR YOUR OCs

What triggers nostalgia for them, most often? Do they enjoy that feeling?
What were they told to stop/start doing most often as a child
Do they swear? Do they remember their first swear word?
What lie do they most frequently remember telling? Does it haunt them?
How do they cope with confusion (seek clarification, pretend they understand, etc)?
How do they deal with an itch found in a place they can’t quite reach?
What color do they think they look best in? Do they actually look best in that color?

How do they speak? Is what they say usually thought of on the spot, or do they rehearse it in their mind first?
What makes their stomach turn?
Are they easily embarrassed?
What embarrasses them?
What is their favorite number?
If they were asked to explain the difference between romantic and platonic or familial love, how would they do so?
Why do they get up in the morning?

Is sex something that they’re comfortable speaking about? To whom?
What are their thoughts on marriage?
What is their preferred mode of transportation?
What causes them to feel dread?
Would they prefer a lie over an unpleasant truth?
Do they usually live up to their own ideals?
Who do they most regret meeting?
Who are they the most glad to have met?
Do they have a go-to story in conversation? Or a joke?
 Could they be considered lazy?
How hard is it for them to shake a sense of guilt?
How do they treat the things their friends come to them excited about? Are they supportive?
Do they actively seek romance, or do they wait for it to fall into their lap?
Do they have a system for remembering names, long lists of numbers, things that need to go in a certain order (like anagrams, putting things to melodies, etc)?
What memory do they revisit the most often?
How easy is it for them to ignore flaws in other people?
How sensitive are they to their own flaws?
How do they feel about children?
How badly do they want to reach their end goal?
If someone asked them to explain their sexuality, how would they do so?
QUESTIONS FOR CREATORS
A) Why are you excited about this character? B) What inspired you to create them? C) Did you have trouble figuring out where they fit in their own story? D) Have they always had the same physical appearance, or have you had to edit how they look? E) Are they someone you would get along with? Would they get along with you? F) What do you feel when you think of your OC (pride, excitement, frustration, etc)? G) What trait of theirs bothers you the most? H) What trait do you admire most? I) Do you prefer to keep them in their canon universe? J) Did you have to manipulate or exclude canon factors to allow them to create their character?

I apologise if you've already answered this, but I tried searching your blog and I'm unsure if you haven't or if it's another example of Tumblr's amazing search system.
I was talking with a friend recently about how much of a culture clash the Monk Class is compared to the rest of Dungeons & Dragons and was wondering if there is a coherent reason for their original inclusion. I'm aware that they're largely influenced by Shaolin monks as depicted in Hong Kong cinema in the 70's/80's as compared to the Sword and Sorcery stuff most of the rest of D&D takes influence from.
Basically, my question ultimately boils down to, "Is the Monk Class there purely because of an original player wanting to rule of cool their way into playing something wildly out of genre, or is there a stronger link between Sword and Sorcery and Hong Kong cinema that could have organically resulted in the Monk Class joining the rest of the classes?"
A lot of the link between the two was simply a matter of time and place. The kung fu craze hit North America at just about exactly the same time as the sword and sorcery revival that gave us films like Clash of the Titans and Beastmaster and The Sword and the Sorcerer and Dragonslayer and Krull – not to mention the Arnold Schwarzenegger Conan adaptation, which revived popular interest in first-wave sword and sorcery literature – so there was a lot of it going around. Analysis of early Dungeons & Dragons as a product of its media influences often overlooks that it was largely drawing on what was trendy in American popular media in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Even the tonally incongruous Lord of the Rings references weren't a deep cut; while the books were originally published in the 1950s, they'd experienced a strong resurgence in the 1970s, putting them firmly in the popular consciousness at the time that D&D was being developed. All this being the case, it's not surprising that early D&D was also substantially influenced by Hong Kong action cinema.
That said, the reason the monk character class in particular (i.e., as opposed to kung fu media influences more generally) is there is allegedly because one specific guy in one of the game's early playtest groups really, really wanted to play as Remo Williams from Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir's The Destroyer; several of the class's signature abilities are direct references to powers Williams exhibits in the course of the novels. Remarks from folks who worked at TSR at the time have pointed the finger at Brian Blume as the Remo Williams fan in question, though accounts are conflicted whether Blume was actually an uncredited contributor to Dave Arneson's Blackmoor (1975), in which the class makes its first proper appearance, or whether Blume's interest merely prompted its inclusion.
This is the case for the character archetypes in a lot tabletop RPGs of that era; instead of trying to work out what classes "ought" be be present, authors would simply start with the types of characters their playtesters actually wanted to play, often based on specific popular media characters, then work backwards to derive an IC rationale for why those were the setting's standard adventuring professions. Other examples from D&D in particular most obviously include the Ranger (based on Tolkien's Aragon, naturally), but also the Paladin (principally inspired by Holger Carlsen from Poul Anderson's 1961 isekai novel Three Hearts and Three Lions, also the source of D&D's goofy regenerating trolls), the Assassin, back when it was still a separate character class (probably mainly based on the Assassin Caste from John Norman's Gor), and even the Wizard to a large extent (less Gandalf than you'd think: a large portion of D&D's iconic wizard spell list is lifted directly from the 1963 Vincent Price film The Raven).
(I often think that modern indie RPGs could benefit from reviving this approach. Like, fuck textual consistency – just pick half a dozen of your favourite popular media characters without regard for the compatibility of the source material and work backwards to explain why these six random assholes are your game's playable archetypes!)

~ToonMan: Comical Crime Fighter~
--------------------
[Story 04 || Week 02]
Written: 01/12/2024
Prompt: You have the superpower of slapstick comedy
Prompt By: u/Paper_Shotgun (Reddit)
--------------------
It's a stormy evening in Pannel City. Colorful dots litter the sidewalks as people hurry home after a long day. Under the canopy of umbrellas, a hooded man weaves his way through the crowds, bumping into the occasional commuter. After bumping into an older man, the elder frantically checks his coat.
"Hey!" yells the old man. "Thief! Thief!" The thief picks up the pace but stops when he notices a cop car parking by the sidewalk. With an angry old man behind him and cops in front of him, the thief quickly dips into a narrow alley, sliding behind a dumpster. He peeks from behind it to watch the old man run past him, yelling at the top of his lungs.
With a sigh of relief and a narrow grin, the thief picks himself up, dusts himself off, and heads for the exit on the other side of the alley.
*SNAP*
The thief hears the snap as if it were inches from his ear. He jerks his head around, only to see nothing. Confused, the thief cautiously continues. Looking forward, the thief is now face-to-face with a grinning paper-pale man wearing a black domino mask. His matching ink-black hair flows down as his head hangs from his inhumanly long neck that seems to stretch over a nearby rooftop. The paper man smiles as his eyes motion toward the ground.
The thief sees a pair of black arms wrapped around his ankles like snakes around their next meal. The terrified thief looks back at the hanging head.
"Going up?" asks the paper man. The thief's screams echo into the sky alongside the paper man's head as multiple wallets drop to the ground.
----------
Officers Johnson and Huch help the old man up the steps of the police station. Inside, the old man notices the thief handcuffed to a chair just past the entrance.
"Lost a wallet?" says the desk clerk as he pulls a small basket full of wallets from under the front desk. "Just got some in fresh." The old man digs through the basket as the two officers talk to the desk clerk.
"That guy looks a lot like our pickpocket," says Huch, pointing at the thief.
"Wouldn't be surprised if he was," said the desk clerk. "Found him outside on my break with a bag of wallets tapped to his hands, and this tapped to his back." The clerk hands the two officers a note. "Tell me if it sounds familiar."
Hi! I'm Tyler Gross. I can't keep my hands to myself and need to be put in timeout.
The officers chuckle as they hand back the note.
"Well, it is a beautiful day to fill out some reports," says Huch, taking off her coat.
"Might take a while," says Johnson, "I'll brew up some coffee in the break room, grab a takeout menu while I'm at it. Got a feeling this might take up the rest of our shift."
"You two are unbelievable," says the clerk.
"Hey, you heard the chief," says Huch. "She wants the cuffs slapped on this guy ASAP. Not a second longer..."
"And not a detail missed!" Johnson continued. "We're just doing our jobs to the best of our ability."
While the officers continue to talk, the old man finds his wallet in the pile. He checks inside to make sure the contents are still there. He sighs in relief to find nothing's been taken but also finds a small note tucked in alongside his cash.
Hope you have a rock'n rainy evening! (Unless this isn't your wallet. Then please put it back.) Crime's favorite punchline -TM

Everyone knows of the great hero that had come to save their world. There are statues and art master pieces of them around the world, their story told through books and passages, even though no one knows where they came from, or where they went.
You have been told as you grew up that you look a lot like the hero, and at first you think it's the usual family gushing over the kids thing. But even as you grew up more, strangers would say the same, even without your parents there. Not to mention, you started noticing the uncanny resemblance as well, but brushed it off because it happened hundreds of years ago.
Now you, as a volunteer, are told you'll be going back in time, testing the first working time machine. When you get there, however, you realize that the setting you're in is awfully similar to what starts all of the chaos in the Hero's book.

#141
Past the horizon, across the sea, and through the forest. Should be an easy quest for you travelers.
The horizon will melt your skin into candle wax.
The sea will do whatever it can to devour you.
The forest will trap you in its maze till you fall in its vines.
Okay, maybe it's not that easy. Every traveler who I have ever told never came back. Hopefully, your time around is different.
