Browse Now—Katharina Grosse in Frieze New York Online
May 6, 2020
FRIEZE NEW YORK ONLINE Katharina Grosse May 6–15, 2020 __________ Gagosian is pleased to present a selection of new works on paper and recent sculptures by Katharina Grosse for the online edition of Frieze New York. These works will premiere simultaneously on the Gagosian website and in the inaugural Frieze Viewing Room, accessible at viewingroom.frieze.com and on the Frieze app. Grosse works with a spray gun, stylizing gesture as a propulsive mark of personal agency while distancing the artistic act from her own hand. Often vast in scale, her spectacular compositions are forceful, dynamic, and distinct—yet never fully predetermined. Using stencils to either filter or block out areas of negative space, she produces dense, vividly colored fields modulated with geometric forms and transparent areas. Grosse’s in situ paintings—where she renders paint across the surfaces of objects, rooms, or entire buildings and landscapes—transform spaces into immersive pictorial events. A selection of new works on paper will be exhibited for the first time in this presentation. Spraying over a single sheet of paper in broad arcs and zigzags, Grosse creates rhythmic markings. Rough-edged yet crisp stenciled shapes are partially veiled by light speckles of sprayed pigment, revealing Grosse’s ability to alternate between exuberant force and more detailed control. These intensely textural compositions hint at sculptural form as well as at the colossal movements of nature; grounded in deep greens and teal blues, they conjure swirling, aqueous depths. Also available are four sculptures from a series made in 2017, cast from cut polystyrene into solid aluminum forms that preserve the innate lightness of the original medium. Vibrant layers of acrylic paint are sprayed across the cast metal supports; the sweeping motions of the spray jet explore, enhance, or counteract the spatial contours of the form with clashes of warm and cool hues. The resulting polychrome sculptures exude an industrial artificiality and dynamism while maintaining a sense of the natural and organic through their resemblance to windswept rock formations or shards of bone. In partnership with Frieze, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of selected works will be donated to Human Rights Watch. In conjunction with this solo digital presentation, Grosse will also be the featured artist of Gagosian’s weekly Artist Spotlight series for the week of May 13–19. Artist Spotlight is a new and multifaceted program, devised in response to the COVID-19 crisis, that invites artists whose gallery or public exhibitions have been affected during this period to utilize Gagosian’s online channels as an open platform through which to present their work. During this initiative, a single work by each week’s featured artist will be made available for purchase for 48 hours only. Katharina Grosse was born in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, and lives and works in Berlin. Collections include Centre Pompidou, Paris; Kunsthaus Zürich; Kunstmuseum Bern; Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany; Staatliche Museen zu Berlin; Lenbachhaus, Munich; and Museum of Modern Art, New York. Recent exhibitions and in situ works include Untitled Trumpet, 56th Biennale di Venezia (2015); yes no why later, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow (2015); Seven Hours, Eight Rooms, Three Trees, Museum Wiesbaden, Germany (2015); Rockaway, for MoMA PS1’s Rockaway! series at Fort Tilden, New York (2016); Asphalt Air and Hair, ARoS Triennial, Aarhus, Denmark (2017); The Horse Trotted Another Couple of Metres, Then It Stopped, Carriageworks, Sydney (2018); Wunderbild, National Gallery, Prague (2018); Mumbling Mud, chi K11 art museum, Shanghai (2018–19, traveled to chi K11 art space, Guangzhou, China, in 2019); Mural: Jackson Pollock/Katharina Grosse, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (2019–20); Is It You?, Baltimore Museum of Art (2020); and It Wasn’t Us, Hamburger Bahnhof–Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin (2020). _____ Katharina Grosse, Untitled, 2019, acrylic on paper, 39 3/4 × 26 3/8 inches (101 × 67 cm) © Katharina Grosse and VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn, Germany 2020

To cover up bagging rendering, a finishing coating may be used. Typically used for exterior walls, rendering can also have interior application. The ‘right’ type of rendering really depends on the architecture of the home in Sydney. It can be used for almost all surfaces like blocks, panels, concrete, cement, blue board, and polystyrene sheet. This makes the bagging rendering appear smoother and can also provide rain protection. It is commonly used in closed environments, like washrooms, in lieu of tiles and ceramics.Investing in rendering services can be a prudent move if you want to strengthen and beautify your home affordably.
Bagging Rendering – This is a more coarse and rather raw type of rendering that implements sand. Acrylic rendering is resistant to abrasion and offers a flattering and high-quality finish. The Inside Scoop on Rendering Services in Sydney Rendering is more than just the application of plaster to dry wall. Rendering will not only make your house more beautiful, but it can also increase its value. Rendering can even give older homes a much-needed facelift and, more importantly, it' cheaper than a full-on renovation. Marmorino – This type of rendering is typically used as a decorative finishing for both exterior and interior facades. Rendering has the ability to seal fractures and protect our house from inclement weather, adding significant value to your home. Proper rendering can even make your home more weather resistant by adding an extra layer of protection to your exterior walls. It boasts a superior bond and excellent weather resistance.

Badu Gili – Behind the scenes
Sydney’s “Artists in Motion” recently posted a rare glimpse into the work involved to produce “Badu Gili”, a building projection made for the Sydney Opera House. The talented crew at AIM used After Effects, Maya, Cinema 4D and good old fashioned Photoshop to create an eight-minute animated showcase of indigenous Australian art that is now a permanent installation, running four times nightly.
Sydney is also home to “Vivid”, the world’s largest lighting and projection festival, which runs for three weeks every year. Approaching its 10th year, the centerpiece of the Vivid Festival is the video projection onto the iconic Sydney Opera House – and an earlier article of mine offers a detailed project breakdown of the work I did for the 2013 Vivid festival.
In 2016, Vivid made headlines when they announced that the Opera House would be used to showcase the artwork of indigenous Australians. With six artworks curated by Rhoda Roberts, the organisers of the Vivid Festival turned to Artists in Motion to transform the original paintings into 16 minutes of animation. Titled “Songlines”, the finished piece was a moving tribute to Australia’s indigenous artists, and the stunning images didn’t just wow the local audience but also made international headlines – including articles on the BBC and CNN.
One of the many stunning scenes from “Songlines”, the centrepiece of the 2016 Sydney Vivid Festival.
While the “Songlines” piece was a cultural milestone for the indigenous community, it only ran for the three weeks of the Vivid festival. The next step was to create a permanent installation that would again showcase Australia’s indigenous artists, but one that would run nightly for the indefinite future.
Sydney Opera House curator Rhoda Roberts selected another five artists, and turned to the same team at Artists in Motion to transform the paintings into eight minutes of animation.
Compared to the usual projects that Artists in Motion work on, the most significant difference with both the “Songlines” and “Badu Gili” projects was the complete absence of any client direction. The Sydney Opera House supplied AIM with photographs of the selected pieces, and then it was up to each individual artist to transform the original static image into a moving video, using whichever software package they specialized in. While 3D animation was done in both Maya and Cinema 4D, final compositing, compiling and overall colour grading was done in After Effects. The working resolution was basically 4K.
From the AIM website:
Our team was supplied a series of photographs of selected paintings done by each artist. Similar to our approach with Songlines, we first analysed each of the artist’s pieces and chosen techniques, mediums, and styles, then translated the work using digital tools to achieve the same look. Several different types of software and techniques were applied to recreate each artist’s style – everything from particle systems to painting dot by dot in Photoshop to physically painting with acrylics, were used in order to maintain the integrity of the original pieces of artwork.
With each artist a different set of tools and techniques were required to bring their piece to life. Each shot was carefully and thoughtfully directed, playing to the strengths of the artists’ work and the stories they told through them. The chapters were woven together and set to a musical soundscape composed by Damian Robinson, featuring vocals from Djakapurra Munyarryun, Cecil Mcleod, Taryn Beatty, Honey Beatty and Travis De Vries.
The year-round experience is a first for the Opera House in its move towards reconciliation, fostering and celebrating a shared sense of belonging for all Australians.
The “behind the scenes” video they recently posted gives an insight into the process, and there’s plenty of fine detail to examine if you hit the pause button at the right time. Several of the artists at AIM recorded screencasts of their work, and then edited several months of work down to a few minutes!
Beyond all of the technical details, however, one particular aspect resonated with me the most – and that was the work involved in creating a single brush stroke.
I’ve been using After Effects for many years, and over that time I can’t begin to count how many times I have needed an image of a brush stroke / paint texture. If you type “brush stroke texture” into Google Images you get millions of results, and even a basic search on Shutterstock yields over 700,000 images. And yet for the scene based on work by artist Minnie Pwerle, none of the existing brush strokes seemed quite right. So Matt Lock (head of 2D at AIM, and previously featured on Motionographer) bought some paint, experimented with some brushes, and photographed the results. With some re-working in Photoshop, he created a unique brush stroke texture which was more in keeping with the style of Pwerle’s original artwork. No special plugins, no rendering tricks in 3D, just some paint, a brush and some paper. And definitely no settling for something that showed up on Google but wasn’t exactly right…
If you really want something done right, you have to do it yourself. To get the perfect brush strokes Matt Lock, head of 2D at Artists in Motion, bought some REAL PAINT! After some cleanup in Photoshop, a sequence of unique strokes is aligned using Cinema 4D.
Some of the artworks featured in the final piece are over 100 years old, and yet the very latest visual effects technology has been used to introduce them to a new audience, and thanks to sites such as YouTube, even a global audience.
Some initial tests for the frogs in the opening sequence. Modelled and animated in Maya by Tess Boughton.
The full “Badu Gili” show, complete with commentary by the show’s curator, can be viewed on YouTube. More details can be found on the Sydney Opera House website, and full credits for the Badu Gili project can be found on the Artists in Motion website.
