The Development of Refractory Ramming Mass
The ramming mass refers to ramming (manual or mechanical) method of construction, and hardened in the heating effect is higher than normal temperature under the unshaped refractory materials.
By refractory aggregate, with certain gradation of powder, binder, additive water or other liquid after mixing.According to the material classification with high alumina, clay, magnesite, dolomite, zirconium and silicon carbide carbon refractory ramming material.
Refractory Ramming Mass Function:
ramming material is made of silicon carbide, graphite, electric calcined anthracite as raw material, mixed with a variety of ultra-fine powder additives, fused cement or composite resin as the binder made of bulk cement. To fill the gap or stack cooling equipment and masonry masonry filler.
Refractory Ramming Mass Types:
The leveling layer with acidic, neutral and alkaline ramming material widely used in intermediate frequency coreless furnace core induction furnace, as if furnace ramming material used for melting aluminum and its alloys, melting of copper, brass, copper and bronze and copper alloy etc.
The carbon ramming mass as an example: according to the different type of blast furnace and the material design requirements of different carbon ramming material is mainly used for blast furnace carbon brick and bottom sealing gaps between plates and carbon bricks and the cooling wall, and filling the furnace bottom water cooling tube over the central line of the leveling and cooling wall, all parts are required by ramming carbon ramming after ramming mass has a certain strength and density, and filled every corner of a small gap, to achieve no leakage of hot metal and gas demand,Classification and construction: all ceramic ramming material consisting of material is divided into: clay, high alumina, carbon, magnesium and dolomite.
Refractory Ramming Mass Advantages:
High erosion resistance.
High bonding strength.
Short lead time.
Free engineering services to guarantee service life.
Ramming mass is used in various industrial places for manufacturing of many refractory materials. It is prepared with great precision using modern techniques and quality materials. Corrosion resistant with a high level of thermal stability, it offers maximum output and last longer. It can be used in lining of iron, lining the trough of blast furnaces, lining of induction furnaces, used as insulation for rapid drying. Also, available in a premixed form allows lesser wastage, consistent and longer lining and patching life.  Ramming mass is prepared using quality components and other raw material as per the industrial set standards and norms with great precision. The even and regular granule of the powder are appreciated by the clientele.
Neutral Ramming Mass VS Silica Linings
Silica ramming mass can safely be used up to an operating temperature of 1600 deg C. Since it expands very little, it is superior to both alumina and magnesia refractories to resist thermal shocks. Though silica lining has good endurance against thermal shock, it has poor resistance against steelmaking slags. Temperature control is very necessary for a satisfactory lining life.
The addition of right quantity of boric acid is very important for optimum life of lining.
The quantity depends upon (i) temperature of liquid metal bath, (ii) chemical composition of quartzite mass, and (iii) thickness of crucible wall.
Silica linings are the conventional lining solution widely used in both ferrous and non-ferrous foundries. Mainly made of crystalline silica and commonly known as acidic ramming mass, the typical binding agents that aid in the sintering of silica linings are boron-based. This refractory lining exhibits mainly low thermal expansion and have excellent thermal shock resistance.
Neutral ramming mass are a unique, chemically neutral foundry solution that form joint-less linings. The in-situ spinels synthesise at high temperatures inside the refractory lining, creating a unique 3-layer structure. The outermost layer in contact with the molten metal is a hard, sintered surface, followed by an intermediate fritted layer. The innermost layer stays in a powdery form.
Neutral ramming mass
Lining wear and the causes of wear
The lining life of induction furnace lined with silica ramming mass depends upon the lining practice and operating practice of the furnace besides quality of the silica ramming mass. It is quite common to get inconsistent lining life of the furnace. There are cases when sudden failure of lining takes place.
The main factors which affects the lining life of the induction furnace are
(i) incorrect granulometry of the ramming mass,
(ii) non-uniform distribution of the binding agent,
(iii) superheating of the metal bath in the furnace,
(iv) penetration of metal,
(v) minimum slag free metal resulting in minimum erosion at slag line,
(vi) loss of refractory powder, and (vii) topping/lining interface cracking
For the proper failure analysis in case of pre-mature failure of the refractory lining, it is important that proper records about output, working temperature, and other parameters are maintained. These records not only help in finding the cause of failure but also help in the continuous performance of the lining life.

Benefits of acid proof brick pallets
Acid-resistant bricks are made from masonry bricks, which are thermally durable and chemically resistant. The masonry bricks are a highly durable form of construction. They are built by placing bricks in the motor to construct a solid mass that can withstand exerted loads. Some of these acid resistance bricks are also made from feldspar and clay.
In this, hydrofluoric acid and hot phosphoric acid are used as they have an excellent anti-corrosion effect on acids such as wet chlorine, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, saltwater, and any acid at the room temperature. These bricks are also manufactured by plastic pallets manufacturers.
Where are these bricks used?
These bricks are currently used in industries such as steel, chemicals, pulp and paper, public utilities, automotive and electronics, aircraft, and so on. The applications in these industries are represented by plating tanks, process vessels, reaction vessels, scrubbers, waste treatment pits, storage tanks, pickling tanks, and rinse lines.
They are designed to protect vessels made of steel, containment tanks, fiber reinforced polyester, and concrete. Chemical resistant bricks protect mechanical, thermal, and chemical protection for these structures. It is the versatile construction material for sulphuric acid plants; they are also installed as a lining for carbon steel shells. These linings can be used regardless of the size of the equipment. They can lower the temperature of the surface of the shell.
Carbon bricks are also known as acid-resistant bricks. These bricks are made from high-quality acid proof organic compound and high-quality carbon-containing materials. These bricks are a kind of refractory material that contains more than eighty percent of carbon. These bricks are widely used in metallurgical industries. The raw materials of these bricks are graphite, coke, and anthracite. These are combined with binders such as tar, asphalt, and anthracene oil Anthracite should be calcined to exclude sulfur content, volatiles, and moisture content.
At the same time, coke is added to improve oxidation resistance, mechanical strength, and volume stability. Finally, coal powder is added as the protection filling in the firing process to prevent oxidation.
Carbon bricks are used in the chemical resistant construction in exposures, which are not readily handled by other bricks. These materials are involved everywhere, indicated under the conditions which involve strong alkalis and HF. Carbon bricks are highly resistant to many alkalis, acids, salts, and a combination of the chemicals varying at the different temperatures and concentrations. These are used in the electroplating industry, blast furnace, paper-plastic pallets manufacturers industry, chemical industry, and many more.
The advantages of these bricks are the following.
-          They provide flexibility without any sensitivity to minor changes in the chemical process and acceptability for many different processes.

Material selection for vigorous chemical production applications
Tumblr media
Material corrosion due to carburization in some petrochemical processes like ethylene cracking is commonly known. Carburization issues are also usually seen in the heat processing conditions. Metal dusting is a common form of carburization that occurs to furnace components for example brick anchors, fan housing etc. Metal dusting occurs in the areas where carbon based conditions become more stagnant causing fast metal loss.
In few chemical processes involving the reproduction of carbon materials, carburization is a common type of corrosive attack. The hot corrosion involving molten salts causes failure of various materials in the high temperature industrial processes. A flue gas stream usually comprises sodium and potassium that interact with sulfur and chloride to develop salts. The salts then take part in hot corrosion by fluxing the security oxide layer developed on the metal surface. This usually causes fast corrosion.  For example a recovery boiler in pulp and paper plants. This equipment is usually fired with the used liquor from the digester. The organic residue burns and the inorganic material reduces to form sodium sulfide and sodium carbonate. The attack on superheater tubes by flue gas and of waterwall tubes and smelt spout openings by liquids is also common.
Several material failure involving severe oxidation is noticed. For example recuperator made from stainless steel 316SS was used to preheat the combustion air to 1000oF in z zinc-melting unit. The recuperator tubes were subjected to 1800oF or 982oC flue gas, they were corroded through perforation after only two to three months of service. Zinc oxides were accumulated on the surface of tube. The corrosion was mainly of oxidation type. Although oxidation was accelerated by zinc oxides.
Another extensive oxidation was found on Inconel 601. Inconel 601 strand annealing tubes were used for annealing cold drawn steel wires at temperatures varying from 1900oF to 2000oF. The annealing was performed after cold processing of steel wires. The tubes experienced extensive high temperature corrosion in the front region of the tubes where steel wires contact the annealing tubes after cold drawing.
Development of low melting eutectic phases in the metal results into catastrophic oxidation of material. Some high temperature processes can develop vigorous nitriding conditions. Production and processing of nitric acid involves nitriding conditions. Heat processing components of nitriding or carbonitriding furnaces are exposed to severe nitriding conditions. Here nitridation resistant nickel alloy Hastelloy C22 is essential to choose for use in these conditions.
An ideal approach to the selection of materials for specific application in corrosive conditions is to conduct a field test in a service plant to produce relevant alloy performance ranking for different materials. It is already found that nickel base high strength and corrosion resistant alloys are fit for serving in the vigorous chemical conditions where traditional stainless steel grades usually fail. High nickel alloys such as Inconel and Hastelloy grades provide supreme service at high temperatures in various chemical conditions. So, you should choose a suitable application material by discussing with a professional alloy manufacturer.
