tagged by @annawrites thanks!
Rules: Go to your works page, expand all the filters, and answer all of the following questions!
1. What’s your first and second most common work ratings?
General Audiences (42)
Teen and Up (20)
2. What’s your most common archive warning? Least common? Do you consider yourself an adventurous writer?
No Archive Warnings Apply (62) is my most common
Graphic Depictions of Violence (1) is my least common, but it’s the only one i’ve ever used
i don’t really know how adventurous i am. i just sort of write whatever i feel like writing, which tends to be fluff, but i have also written a few things that i wouldn’t ordinarily see as my kind of thing so  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
3. How many fics have you written in each relationship category? Is this more accidental, or do you have preferences?
M/M (52)
Gen (16)
F/F (2)
most of the fic i’ve written is for pynch or andreil which are both m/m. the only f/f ship i’ve written for is renison and like...no one reads it, which is why there’s only 2. at the minute i prefer to write pynch over anything else, but in general it really depends what kind of mood i’m in, and i feel less inclined to put effort into writing and publishing a fic that i don’t think anyone will read.
4. What are your top 4 fandoms by numbers? Are you still active in any of them, and do you tend to migrate a lot?
Raven Cycle - Maggie Stiefvater (36)
All For The Game - Nora Sakavic (25)
Check Please! (Webcomic) (2)
i only have 3! i kind of want to orphan or delete the check please ones (and maybe the aftg ones) at the moment because...idk why. i get easily overwhelmed in fandom spaces so i do tend to hop between them all, but i’m more attached to trc than any of the others. (i will probably go back to writing aftg at some point, i just need a break)
5. What are your top 4 character tags? Does this match how you feel about the characters, or are you puzzled?
Ronan Lynch (36)
Adam Parrish (34)
Neil Josten (23)
Andrew Minyard (21)
yeah that’s about right as i do tag characters even if i’ve already tagged the relationship!
Bonus, top 4 relationships tagged:
Ronan Lynch/Adam Parrish (34)
Neil Josten/Andrew Minyard (21)
Minor or Background Relationship(s) (4)
then these are all joint 4th place: Richard Gansey III/Blue Sargent (2)  Richard Gansey III & Ronan Lynch (2)  Allison Reynolds/Renee Walker (All For The Game) (2)  Derek "Nursey" Nurse/William "Dex" Poindexter (2) Aaron Minyard & Andrew Minyard (2)
6. What are your top 2 most used additional tags, and your bottom 2? What would happen if you combined all 4 of these into a fic?
this probably isn’t an accurate representation because i’m a notoriously bad tagger but my top two are:
Fluff (21)
Established Relationship (4)
my bottom two are (again this is inaccurate because there were more than 2 tags with the same number of fics):
Post-Canon (3)
Canon Compliant (3)
if i combined them all i’d end up with almost any of the fics i have already written lmao this is me in a nutshell (except maybe not canon compliant but a girl can dream)
7. How many WIPs do you have currently running on AO3? Any you don’t plan on finishing?
just one multi-chapter currently ongoing and i do plan on finishing it! i have other series of fics which i do plan on adding more to at some point but they’re all sort of self-contained little fics as well so they’re less urgent
8. Tag people!
i feel like i’m super late to the party with this one and i don’t wanna tag people who’ve already been tagged, so just any writer mutuals who want to play and haven’t been tagged, consider yourselves tagged :)

The Foxhole Court
Tumblr media
Rating: ★☆☆☆☆
Short blurb: Neil Josten has been on the run from his murderous crime lord father for years, and signing onto a high profile college exy team is the last thing he should do if he wants to stay hidden. His lies will hold up only so long under this kind of scrutiny and the truth will get him killed. But Neil's not the only one with secrets on the team. Face to face with someone from his past, Neil finally has to choose whether to run or stand and fight.
The extent to which I have Opinions on this book is... frustrating.
I had problems with it. On a basic level, it started out with subpar writing, confusing backstory and exposition, and continued on to casually drop the word "r*t*rd" at least three times without blinking. To clarify: it’s not evil characters we’re supposed to dislike and know are wrong for saying it that use the word. It’s a good guy we’re supposed to like. Making it very hard to like him.
Another big point: the representation of Andrew and manic depression (according to the author, confirmed on tumblr, that’s his diagnosis. I don’t know enough about different disorders, but the internet says it’s called bipolar disorder now. The label we got in canon was “psychotic”, which appears to be one facet of bipolar disorder rather than his entire diagnosis. It’s very not clear in canon). It looks to me from reading reviews that the only thing this book's representation of mental illness accomplished was reinforcing some people's impression that mentally ill = dangerous. Probably because the author wrote Andrew as both psychotic and incredibly dangerous, and then gave him knives.
Now, I’d have to do more research on bipolar disorder in order to understand how much research Nora Sakavic did or didn’t do while writing Andrew, because as I’ve said, I don’t know a whole lot. But given that she flat out made up the medicine he’s on (which is kind of huge, because a lot of the book depends on you accepting that Andrew’s on medication that makes him high 100% of the time he’s on it), it seems like she’s... pretty okay with not having fully accurate depictions of mental illness. Which makes me wonder how sensitive this representation is, and I have the most skeptical of glares aimed at this whole area.
When the reviews are full of people casually using psychotic as an insult or stand in for “bad person”, and your book did nothing to dissuade people from that kind of view, that might be a problem.
Besides those easily pinned-down issues, it's harder to say exactly what my biggest problems were, but I'll try.
1. I don't understand Neil's decisions. The times when he chooses to react to the outrageous bullying and when he doesn't, how he reacts and how he keeps quiet — it never clicked with me, his reasons for responding one way or another.
But then again, I don't understand the actions of plenty of other characters in this book. The difference is that with those characters, I don't think you're supposed to. Which frustrated me, not getting answers, but the author choosing not to explain things mystifies me a lot less than Neil's decisions coming across as random. Of course every action a character takes must be controlled by the author to take the plot in the desired direction, but with Neil the author failed to create the illusion that his reactions were natural consequences of his personality and situation.
2. Branching off of point number 1: Neil's drive to hold onto the team would work a lot better if his connection to exy was more developed. It felt like we were told more than shown how important the sport is to him. I'll give the book this — it came across during the game scene. But before that, it was too surface level.
3. (Almost) Every Character Is An Asshole And I'm Bored. Probably what made the last 20% of the book the most (only?) enjoyable part of the book for me was that everyone were still assholes, but there was enough variation with the nice characters and the asshole-but-finally-more-developed characters that it was interesting again.
4. Due to suffering through another series with the same thing, I am extremely over the main character being drugged by their future romantic interest and that character never being held fully accountable for what an awful act that is.
Like I said, I enjoyed the last 20% of this book (interesting interactions among characters! Intense game scene! Interplay of hatred and just-starting-to-get-along!), and other scattered moments as well. But the only things that made me continue with this series were already owning the rest of the ebooks and being determined to finally understand the fandom of this series.

Clipped Wings
Fandom: All For the Game - Nora Sakavic
Rating: M
Characters:
Riko Moriyama/Kevin Day, Neil Josten, Ichirou Moriyama, Andrew Minyard
Warnings:
Graphic Depictions of Violence, AU
Summery:
Riko Moriyama survives the meeting of Neil and his brother after the Raven’s lost game - but at what price?   Kevin would never accept that some people declared a life not worth living anymore - least of all the young man he had grown up with.
Chapter One - Broken crown
“Riko Moriyama is Not suicidal”, Kevin Day said with conviction.
“Well, seems he is”, Matt answered, “Did you seen his interview? He stepped down. Looked like a ghost.”
Last week, the Ravens had made it public: Riko Moriyama was stepping down as team captain and leaving the Ravens. All hell had broken loose on social media. Watching the interview had made Kevin’s skin crawl, but he had spoken to no one about it. His own team was still celebrating their well-deserved victory and Neil’s freedom.
This evening, the Exy sports community had held its breath when the news about Riko Moriyama’s suicide attempt had gone viral. The young striker had been found near death after OD’ing. Riko Moriyama doesn’t do drugs, Kevin thought bitterly. Something was very wrong here.
Tetsuji stood up and left the room after Neil had entered, only Riko was left behind sitting on a couch, the white of his cast poking out from under his sleeve. Neil looked at it with satisfaction.
“You have cost the Ravens their coach. Are you satisfied?” Ichirou was facing him, observing him, and Neil felt a cold shiver running down his spine. He straightened and turned his gaze away from Riko.
“Your people are safe, as are mine. Yes, I’m satisfied.” How someone could smile as coldly as this man, Neil couldn’t comprehend, yet it came so easily, so naturally to this man.
“Let them call you by whatever name they like. You will always be a Wesninski at heart.” Ichirou gestured to Neil, beckoning him closer and he obeyed. "This situation requires a clean slate. " Ichirou stepped over to his little brother who didn't realized it at first and then looked up in utter bewilderment. "Get up," Ichirou ordered and Riko stood, head lowered. "I'm sure you've realized that words from my brother mean precious little," the older Moriyama addressed Neil without facing him.
"You are right about that…,” the backliner had to agree. The whole situation was a little unnerving for him. Riko, who had usually something to say, was as silent as a grave.
“I usually am,” the mobster said in a quiet, thoughtful voice that revealed that he had already moved on to other matters. “Now, let’s get this out of the way.” He grabbed Riko by the back of his neck and shoved him forward. The younger Moriyama stumbled two steps in Neil’s direction but didn’t utter any sound of protest. “謝れ,” Ichirou told him in that same quiet voice. Neil kept looking between them, but then it was Riko who lowered his head again, this time in front of him. “もっと,” his brother ordered him. The younger Moriyama gritted his teeth, then bowed, actually bowed, in front of Neil.
“I apologize,” he said, and Neil could hear how much that had cost him. The backliner looked questioningly at Ichirou, asking himself if this should mean anything to him. Yes, it was unexpected, but an apology hardly cut it in this kind of situation.
“You seem unsatisfied,” the crime lord observed.
“I didn’t say that,” Neil replied, remembering his place. He looked back at Riko, who had straightened again but refused to meet his gaze.
“You didn’t have to. And why shouldn’t you be? I hear my brother took care of you last Christmas.” Neil only nodded. “Did he show you his favorite knife?” Neil’s thought he could feel his scars burn as that memory was dragged out of him again by the man’s cold voice.
“He did,” he replied, fighting to keep his voice even. Riko didn’t react.
“I thought he might. It was a gift from your father, actually.” Neil narrowed his eyes at that. Ichirou held one hand up and one of his men stepped forward to hand him the very knife Neil had last seen at Castle Evermore. It was definitely the same one; he’d have recognized it anywhere. Ichirou faced his brother and handed him the knife. For an absurd moment Neil imagined the striker using it to attack him or his brother, but Riko hesitated before he took it, then stood there like a mannequin. The firstborn son spoke in a low and commanding voice to him. Neil couldn’t understand anything he said. He had never learned Japanese. Whatever Ichirou said though, it made Riko’s eyes widen and the color drain from his face.
It took him a while, and then, after forcing a few breaths in and out of his lungs, Riko muttered a single, hoarse, “No.”  It sounded almost pleadingly in Neil’s ears. The older brother huffed in disgust. He took the knife back and Riko gave it up without resistance.
“I’ve told my brother that he could choose one of his fingers to cut off. It seems though that he is too weak to go through with it.” Too weak, Neil thought, or just not stupid enough? He wouldn’t do it in Riko’s place. “Now, since he is a fool, he just lost his right to choose. So why don’t you do it for him?” The man offered the knife to Neil instead.
“What?” The young backliner just stared at it, unable to comprehend for a second.
“Cut his finger off.” It wasn’t an offer, nor was it a request. It was an order. Neil’s eyes switched between the knife and Riko. The young striker looked absolutely horrified but still didn’t protest. Neil had always guessed that his family wasn’t the only dysfunctional one; now he knew it for sure. Slowly, he reached for the offered knife. He deserved it, he thought bitterly, Riko fucking deserved it. Not only for what he had done last Christmas. He deserved it for Seth, for Jean, for Kevin, and most of all for Andrew.
“You know what?” he hissed at Riko, “One wouldn’t be enough.” He meant it to be intimidating.
“In that case, go ahead. Take all of them, if you like.” Whatever plea had crawled up Riko’s throat when hearing his brother’s words died and turned into a choking sound instead.
“You fucking deserve this,” Neil hissed in a low voice as he stepped right in front of the self-claimed King of Exy. “I should take your thumbs. Let’s see how you are going to hold a racquet then. I should ruin you hand, like you did with Kevin.” He practically spat his friend’s name at the young man in front of him. He waited for Riko to defend himself, to attack him, to try to run away; but none of that was forthcoming. The young man just stood there right in front of him, terrified.
“Don’t do this,” Riko whispered, his voice thick with fear. “Don’t take them, please!”
“Did you make Kevin beg too?”
“Don’t…”
“Did you make him beg?” Neil suddenly screamed.
“No, I didn’t,” Riko gritted out, and the young backliner was right in his face, gripping the knife until his knuckles turned white.
“What about your pet doctor Frankenstein? Did he make Andrew beg? Huh? When he drugged him, when he fucking tortured him, touched him, humiliated him, did he make him beg?”
“I don’t know,” Riko whispered and swallowed hard when his voice started to fade.
“Why should I believe you?”
“Nathaniel, I swear—“
“Don’t call me that!” And suddenly the knife was at Riko’s throat. He hadn’t even realized it. But there it was, his own hand holding it to that pale neck. “You might not get it, but not all of us beg for our father’s approval. —Not like you’d ever understand.” Riko just closed his eyes and and forced one deep breath in and out of his lungs.
“You know… Since you enjoyed inking me so much, why don’t you let me show you what I think would be perfect for you?” Neil asked, his tone carefully stripped of all emotion. He grabbed the young Moriyama by the hair, then pressed the tip of the knife into his skin, right next to the tattooed I on his cheek. He cut downwards diagonally, slicing the smooth skin deep enough that it would leave a scar. Blood was running down Riko’s cheek, the red a harsh contrast to his pale skin. The striker was taking harsh breaths now, his eyes clenched shut, his tightly clenched fists trembling at his sides. He was shaking with the restraint it took him not to bolt or attack Neil in this situation. The consequence of either would be fatal.
Neil took the knife away and admired his handiwork. He felt strangely detached from the whole situation, as if he was watching himself. He had cut a ∤ into the young Moriyama’s cheek. ‘Does not divide’ —he couldn’t think of anything more accurate. Riko would never come between him and any of his friends ever again. He wouldn’t let him.
“You would have made your father proud,” Ichirou said from behind him and Neil’s shoulders stiffen. He yanked Riko’s head back viciously and let go of him.
“Maybe. That’s the last thing I want though,” Neil answered, then turned around. He handed the knife back to the mobster, offering him the hilt first, while holding on to the bloody blade. Ichirou accepted it, then cocked his head in question. “I won’t cut his fingers off. I want to crush him on the court.” It was his chosen battleground in this crazy world of criminals. It was where he actually could fight and beat them.
“Oh, I’m afraid you won’t get that chance again. You see, my brother is retiring tonight.”
“Retiring?” Neil couldn’t believe it. First Tetsuji, now Riko.
“He will never play Exy again.” Neil didn’t dare to turn around and look at Riko at that moment. He didn’t want to see what that sentence had done to the young man. Never play Exy again? Unthinkable. Exy was the air they breathed. Exy was what they lived for; he, Kevin and Riko. Someone had cut them from the same cloth before they were born.
“May I go now?” he requested. He needed to get out of here. He had gotten what he had always wanted; his freedom. He couldn’t wait to get home, to go to sleep and wake up the next morning, knowing he was a free man. It was such a foreign concept to him.
“You may,” Ichirou dismissed him. Neil lowered his head respectfully, then turned on his heels to leave the room. Behind him he could hear the mobster giving orders in his ice cold tone again. His two men stepped forward and grabbed Riko by the shoulders and hands, straightening his fingers.
“Ichirou,” Riko pleaded weakly. It took two men to hold him down while his brother raised the knife and cut along the fingers of his outstretched hand, deep enough to bare the white of bones, slicing through nerves and tendons of all four fingers. Blood was gushing from the wounds in a red river down Riko’s arm, dripping to the floor and staining the carpet, while one of the men bent his fingers back until the bones almost snapped and splintered. The older Moriyama didn’t cut his brother’s finger off. He just made sure Riko would never regain the feeling in them again, would never regain their full motor-function, or hold a racquet tightly enough to step onto the court. His brother would never play again. The young King of Exy was screaming by then; in horror, in despair, in pain —Neil didn’t know, but the sound from behind the closing door chilled him to the bone, would never leave him ever again.

Part six of The Sam Diaries Read on Ao3: http://archiveofourown.org/works/10507836/chapters/24084519
‘Sam, Eunoia gave me your number. Could we meet up at the cafe in about ten minutes? It's urgent. Neil.’
Sam had two options. He could ignore the text and potentially abandon Neil in a time of need, therefore be hunted down by an unsmiling Andrew Minyard and get a knife in his gut before he could walk down the aisle. OK, so option one sucks. Option two; he somehow manages to get from work to the cafe in under ten minutes, knowing that the bus will not be on time and he's never had to get that far on foot in such a short time ever. Option two also sucks, and may also result in his death via cardiac arrest. At least I'll look less traumatising in my coffin if it’s cardiac arrest though.
Option two it is.
Sam makes his excuses citing a family emergency, having a minor irrational panic as he jogs out of the company that his word choice will somehow get back to Andrew and he'll get a knife to the gut regardless of the Neil situation.
He really shouldn't be approximating friends with someone who is so likely to kill him at any moment. Ah well, too late now.
Not even his impending death is enough to distract him from how fucking awful running is. To say he's sweating would be a major understatement. Close to collapsing from hyperthermia is a more accurate. He's glad he hasn't eaten lunch yet because he's certain he'd be expelling it on the sidewalk if he had. He takes to swearing aloud each time his right foot hits the floor, uncaring of the other sidewalk occupants' horrified looks. He does tone it down to 'damnit' as he runs past the school, but he's straight back to panting 'fuck me up the ass with a chainsaw shit fuck shit' immediately afterwards.
Needless to say, he doesn't make the trip in ten minutes, more like twenty, but still notably faster than the bus, a fact he would be proud of if he could get enough oxygen into his lungs to be able feel anything besides intense nausea.
He staggers into the coffee shop and looks wildly around for Neil, hoping to any and all higher powers that Neil has a) a good reason for this and b) that it doesn't require him to do anything.
Unfortunately, Neil is apparently unmoveable by higher powers.
“What happened to you?” Neil asks as Sam throws himself down onto the seat opposite him by the window. Sam waves an indignant but exhausted hand at him, slumping enough in his seat that he can see the underside if the table.
“You, said, it, was, urgent.” Neil has the grace to look slightly sheepish.
“Well. Urgent might have been a bit... Presumptuous.” Sam's generally not very good at glaring, but he thinks he can make an exception as he stares Neil down.
“You made me, an unfit lump of a human being, lie my way out of work and then run halfway across the city for something that was not an emergency?!”
“This is presumably a bad time to admit I need a favour isn't it?” Sam thumps his head against the seat, but he can't be mad for long, especially in the face of Neil's disappointed face.
“What is it?”
“I was wondering if you would draw me something.” Sam blinks. He draws himself up by digging his elbow into the table and looks at Neil properly.
“More stabby stalkers?” Neil shakes his head, to Sam's relief.
“No. It's Dan and Matt's wedding anniversary next week, and I was wondering if you could draw my Foxes line up like this.” From his pocket, Neil produced an image from google entitled 'squad goals'. Crude stick figures were shown posing, and above each of them Neil had written which one of his Foxes he wanted drawn in that pose. Sam smiled as he looked at it, sensing that the choice of each person's pose had been chosen very carefully.
“I'll need reference pictures. But I'm pretty sure I could get this done by next week.”
“Good. How much is it?” Sam frowned at him.
“What?”
“For the drawing.” Neil said impatiently, glancing out of the window as his knee bounced enough to knock into the table.
“Um. I don't know. I've never been commissioned before.” He didn't point out that Neil should probably have commissioned an artist who was actually looking for commissions. He had a feeling he'd earnt a bit of Neil's trust, enough that he'd go to him with this. Alternatively Neil might just not have any idea that there were artists on the Internet looking for commissions. He didn't really strike Sam as an active Tumblr user. Either or.
Before Sam can come to a decision, he’s distracted by the newspaper on the far end of the table that’s blown open from the (blessed) breeze coming through the window. He snags the page and pulls it towards him.
THE REAL REASON BEHIND THE JOSTEN-MINYARD RIVALRY?
The headline is the top story in the sports section. Neil reads it upside down and groans burying his face in his hands.
“Fuck. I didn’t think it would be in the newspaper.” Sam scans the article baffled, only putting it together when he spots the blurry selfie in the centre. In it, other than the clearly excited Exy fan’s face, Neil and Andrew are sat opposite each other at the very same table Sam is now sat at, looking as indifferent as usual apart from their clasped hands. To Sam’s confusion, the media seem to think that it’s Andrew’s twin brother Aaron in the picture, and that- Sam can’t help but snort when he reads it- that Andrew’s homophobic.
“What’s the ‘rivalry’ about?” Neil shrugs, but he’s smirking a little bit.
“On the court I talk to Andrew in Russian a lot. It’s not my fault if the media misconstrued my… Enthused reminders of our grocery list.” Sam giggles and Neil’s smirk widens as he catches his eye. “I caught this,” Neil continues, waving his hand at the article, “On my Twitter this morning before my run. Wanted to meet up with you about this drawing before Andrew sees it.”
“Why?” Sam asks curiously. Neil winces, and nods his head at something behind Sam.
Sam turns to find Andrew Minyard stalking towards him with something lethal in his eyes. All 5 foot nothing of muscle, and probably 90% ice cream if his purchases at Eunoia’s are anything to go by… Well Sam’s not ashamed to admit he scrambles hastily out of his seat and out of Andrew’s way.
Andrew takes no notice of Sam, instead reaching the table and glowering at Neil, who looks completely unrepentant. This, however, traps Sam between the counter and the exit, with Andrew an unmoving roadblock in-between. Andrew says something in scornful Russian, and Neil replies lazily in the same language, looking amused. Sam has no idea what’s going on, other than he is feeling more uncomfortable by the second.
He glances around wildly for a distraction, eyes landing on the tiny TV screen above the counter that’s always on a news channel. From here, he can’t hear anything, but he notices when Andrew’s body double is depicted on screen, looking like someone who should be frazzled considering he’s wearing his pyjamas and his hair is a bird’s nest, but he’s glaring into the camera lens like it has personally offended him. In all honesty, it might have.
“Um, guys?” He hedges. Andrew’s head whips up to follow his line of sight, and before Sam can say anything, Andrew is shoving him out of the way and stalking up to the counter.
“Turn it up.” Andrew commands, emotionless, but the threat in his eyes makes the poor cashier hurry to do what he says even as the man’s eyes flick between Andrew and the screen with dawning amazement.
“-Katelyn, why the,” BEEP, “Would I date someone as idiotic as Neil,” BEEEEP, “Josten and if you had two brain cells to provoke a synaptic response you’d know that’s clearly Andrew in the photo you absolute morons.” The clip finished and it flicked back to the studio where the newsreader was talking through what Aaron had said, as if he hadn’t made himself perfectly clear.
Sam glanced at Andrew’s face cautiously, but he still didn’t know Andrew well enough to read what he was thinking. Neil had wandered over at some point during his speech and was resting the majority of his upper body on the counter, looking back at Andrew.
“He’s right. You are an idiot.” Andrew says eventually.
“I guess we’re out now then.” Neil sighs faux-dramatically. “And here I was hoping to come across as heterosexual. Kevin will be so disappointed.”
“Day’s just too much of a coward to come out himself.” Andrew mused. Neil blinked, and then his eyes opened wide.
“What? Andrew, what?!” The tiniest of smirks curled one corner of Andrew’s mouth as Neil continued to look as if the floor had been ripped out from under his feet while being plunged into a bowl of ice-cold water and a bag of rocks smashed into his head.
Seeing as Sam didn’t particularly care about whatever it was they were talking about now, he decided to carefully edge out of the café, grabbing the paper Neil had given him as he went. Apparently, he had some drawing to do.

Do you have any book recommendations?
oh boy do i!!
youve probably already heard of a lot of these but
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz
this is my favourite book ever okay i can’t stress that enough it has beautiful gay representation and accurate teenage angst. also all the main characters are Mexican and the author is too so i assume he does them justice. It’s character driven and has a beautiful focus on family and best friends and what those things mean and honestly it changed my outlook on life there are so many profound, beautiful, painfully truthful quotes from this book (”Maybe we just lived between hurting and healing”)that ive highlighted and underlined in my own copy but i lost it and im rly sad ok im getting off topic. the thing that i loved the most about this book is how honest it is. it doesnt use unnecessary drama to move things forward and it doesn’t have unrealistic depictions of teens. these are two boys with insecurities but they are written so they’re complex. they’re not boiled down to a Boy struggling with This One Thing, they’re honest characters. oh god i love this book so much if you’re stuck between this book and another one pls read this one first you won’t regret it
here is a great non-spoiler review btw (”It’s a story about a boy who is sad and angry and can’t figure out why.” - from the review)
The Foxhole Court (All for the Game series) by Nora Sakavic
okay before i proceed i want to say TRIGGER WARNING FOR EVERYTHING YOU CAN POSSIBLY THINK OF THIS STORY IS SAD. BAD THINGS HAPPEN. okay now that that’s out of the way. Neil Josten has been on he run from his serial killer dad for the past 8 years. The only thing he’s passionate about is a sport called Exy. He gets recruited by the Palmetto State Foxes, a team of misfits from broken homes who needed a second chance. They’re also known for being ranked dead last for a number of years. Since he’s on the team, he;’s in a spotlight for his dad’s people to find him. An exy star he knew from his childhood named Kevin Day is also on that team and is running away from the japanese mafia who does business with his dad. so double oops. it’s not centred around the sport tho so don’t worry if you’re not a big sports fan bc neither am i. also andrew minyard is a 5 ft ball of destruction and i love him. the women are badass and it has a HUGE FOCUS ON CONSENT. it’s also gay but not til the third book. the character / relationship development is so heartwrenchingly beautiful it’s worth the slow burn also THE FIRST BOOK IS FREE! and the other two are only a dollar each. if u cant afford them pls don’t download it illegally @coldsaturn will gladly buy it for you
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
oh man where do i start. it’s basically a fanfiction of homer’s the Illiad. it focuses on the relationship between Achilles and his lover Patroclus. it’s their story told from patroclus’ point of view and so you get a side to achilles than what you see in history books. this book is SO BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN it’s so elegant and the scenery is rich and oh man the QUOTES (”I am made of memories”) brilliant use of foreshadowing. the ending made me cry. i dont usually cry at books but oh man i can literally quote the last paragraph no lie. (there is a noncon scene in there where a woman is trying to get it on but the man isn’t enjoying it, so fair warning). anyway its a beautiful book
The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
okay so this is a childrens book. like a bedtime story. but it’s still going on my rec list because it has incredible insight on growing up and it’s so wonderful it was one of my favourite books as a child and it still is now. It’s kinda old and was translated from french so its kinda behind the times as far as narrative voice goes but it’s about this guy who’s plane crashes in the middle of a desert where he meets the little prince. the little prince is from another planet and tells the narrator about his travels to other planets and his encounters with the “grown-ups”. it has a beautiful message about how what makes something special is something invisible: the connection you have with it. and how it’s okay to miss something because you know that it exists somewhere. (”What makes the desert beautiful,“ said the little prince, "is that somewhere it hides a well…”) and it’s so beautiful the ending gets me every time.
im not gonna list anymore bc im tired but here!! i hope this helped!!

Mutual Pining Masterlist
Andreil
a chance to start again by eikoexe (M | Incomplete | 10/?)
Andrew Minyard was a consulting detective - probably one of the best. He lived a life alone and only kept well to his demands, solving more crimes than nobody could think possible. Wymack usually said he was stuck up on the job, Renee had been suggesting he finds himself someone to live with, just so he wouldn’t live a life full of solitude. Andrew said he didn’t need it, didn’t want it, that he was perfectly fine the way he was. But what if one day he met a boy who stubbornly tripped into his life? Who had been wanted by his father for running away? Who needed a place to stay… and who needed a home?
And so Andrew’s life changed when he met Neil Josten.
Or alternatively, a Sherlock AU where instead of Johnlock solving crimes, we get our Andreil boys.
Something, Nothing & Everything by TheBashfulPoet (E | 139,900 | 28/28)
Neil Josten is yet another name in a long list of identities used to hide a boy long since dead from a past blood had been spilled to forget. Essentially, he is and always will be nothing. And yet there has always been one thing that made Neil Josten real: music. After his mother’s death, music and singing were the only things tying him the threads of reality by the strap of a well-worn guitar. Too bad he’s pretty sure that it’s also going to be the thing to kill him. Especially when Kevin Day, international rock star and blast of Neil’s past comes waltzing back into his life demanding he joins the upstart and infamous band EXY as its new vocalist. To make matters worse, Kevin’s unofficial shadow, Andrew Minyard with a rap sheet taller than he is has taken an interest in the lie that Neil Josten and has made it his mission to uncover the bloodied truth that lies beneath.
By all accounts, Neil should just pick up his guitar and disappear like he’s done so many times before, but the chance to be real and seen is almost enough for him to plant his feet for the first time in 11 years he’s been running. Going into the spotlight means certain death, but Neil’s just not so sure that leaving it would mean anything different.
stars may collide by broship_addict, llheji (M | 20,664 | 2/2)
Moonlighting as Abram, member of the city's crime-fighting Foxes, Neil is doing a very bad job at staying under the radar. He's busy enough between his friends, patrol, and bickering with Andrew at work, but with the Ravens gang finally within reach and the reappearance of the Monster, he might have bitten more than he can chew.
(Or, how both Neil and Andrew accidentally fall in love with the same person twice. Lame.)
You Made a Monster Out of Me by basicallymonsters (M | Incomplete | 3/?)
He realizes that everyone feels exactly the same way he does, filthy and buzzed and understood and angry. His eyes find Andrew again, sober but animated like the drums are a live wire and he’s electric.
He thinks, if he could be part of this, if he could stand in the middle of the stage in a garden full of monsters, and sing the audience’s veins open, he would never need another drink, or another moment on court.
Prompt: Andreil in a rock band setting – tattoos, harsh lighting, calloused fingers, Andrew’s sweaty arms, Neil’s striking blue eyes, someone’s excellent voice, an uncomfortable undercurrent of drug abuse.
don’t take that sinner from me by wesninskids (M | Incomplete | 2/?)
In Bono, Alabama, a southern town where nobody ever goes, Neil Josten is a blind boy who used to read and write stories. Now he tells them aloud for his friend to write down, but things are quick to turn bland where there’s no color to see. He finds comfort in religion, thinking God can give him his eyes.
Then Andrew Minyard arrives in town in a dusty Impala and a crumpled suit, claiming he’s there to help Renee Walker take care of the church after the local priest’s death. Everyone soon starts wondering what his motives are and why he’d exile himself to a dead-end like theirs, mistrusting every word—but they’re after the wrong threat. Disillusioned and disappointed by religion, this lonely man of God came for a greater mission than preaching and blessing. He’s after something, and he might have just found it.
The blind boy of the town will either be his salvation or damnation, and he’s not sure which one yet.

doe & josten: deductionists by spanglebangle (M | Incomplete | 25/?)
Andrew Doe, rude but brilliant consulting detective, thought he had no need of a partner as he worked slowly away at dismantling the largest crime family in the country, helping out with other cases on the side to relieve the tedium. this was a fic written for the aftgexchange on tumblr, but i decided to continue it as a multi-chapter fic on ao3! this is a fake dating au with no seth, riko/the moryamas, and drake so it’s the softest thing you’ll ever read
neil is a runaway, andrew works at a bakery, and nicky is really, really nosy. being someone’s fake boyfriend is a lot harder than it looks, especially when you’re hardcore crushing on them

Neil serves ice cream and Andrew might be addicted. There’s a lot of blushing.

only fools by kazbrekker_morelike_kazwrecker (E | 19,833 | 20/20)
A flower shop/coffee shop AU that no one asked for but appeared in my brain and had to get out. Neil never played Exy and never met the Foxes at PSU, but his story with his father remains the same. Neil doesn’t like people much but neither does Andrew and everyone knows coffee brings people together
the foxtrot’s not for the faint of heart by kazbrekker_morelike_kazwrecker, smolmoll04 (M | Incomplete | 3/?)
The Foxes are a dance group working their way up from being mostly underground and found their new studio and Wymack as their producer. The Moriyamas are a powerful human trafficking syndicate and instead of Exy, they deal in dance competitions. Neil’s father wanted to sell him to the syndicate but his mother was like NOT MY DAUGHTER YOU BITCH and ran with him.
Neil has found the Foxes and a familiar face… He also gets to meet a certain sarcastic five foot tall blond and things ensue…
trust fall by emeryuu (E | 9,948 | 1/1)
Neil is a florist who loves his job but isn’t going to refuse a second job if he can make good money from it. Even if the said job is bartending at a club. Even if that club is a BDSM club.
Andrew is a tattoo artist working at the studio next to neil’s flower shop. He’s a regular at Eden’s Twilight where he always can find a sub willing to do a scene with him.
One night they meet at the club and that’s a beginning of a new journey for both of them. What starts as simple deal to let Neil explore parts of life he hadn’t chance to explore, slowly becomes something much bigger.

AU in which Andrew doesn’t hate everything and Neil does not know how to deal with this beautiful nerd.
Allison/Renee (renison)
we all need sweets every now and then by downintheflames (M | Incomplete | 1/?)
A storm rumbled towards the team as they ran laps on the lacrosse field. Wymack had proclaimed they needed to breathe real air to get all their bullshit out of their system. Allison had complained about the humidity ruining her hair before she stopped to watch the clouds trip over themselves in the sky. Renee liked to think that in another life, Allison would have been a storm chaser. She was staring at the sky in awe while Renee stared at her. Andrew cleared his throat loudly. Neil nudged him softly then silently assured her that she should continue on - that the vulnerability was a good thing. Nicky rambled on to no one in particular about how one time when he was in Germany with Eric… Kevin slid his phone out of his pocket and took a picture of the clouds so he could look up exactly what kind they were when they returned to the dorms. Aaron grumbled about how stupid running laps outdoors was. Dan barked at them to get a move on - that they wouldn’t stop unless there was lightning. Matt immediately picked up his pace with Allison following behind him. Renee shook herself out of her thoughts. Allison was her best friend and nothing more. Andrew needed to stop acting like her saying that was such a joke.

Life never goes to plan. Love is no exception to this.
you, just you by zucheenee (M | 17,651 | 1/1)
Allison grabbed another slice of pizza, leaning back in her chair. Renee worried, not for the first time, that she’d fall and give herself a concussion. Allison sighed and flicked a lock of long blonde hair behind her shoulder, suddenly looking up and meeting Renee’s eyes. “Boys are just so stupid, right?” She said, smiling prettily at Renee. Allison always smiled prettily, and Renee wanted to die.
“Right.”
In which Allison can’t seem to find the right man, and Renee wishes Allison would get a clue.

“Next time you need an outlet, come to me. I’ll take you shopping, not beat the shit out of you.”
“Andrew doesn’t usually beat me. I was distracted this morning.”

Jean/Jeremy (Jerejean)
playing on by flybbfly (M | 142,179 | 31/31)
"Who knew California Golden Boy Jeremy Knox could play dirty?”
Jeremy grins. “Best kept secret on the west coast. Told you there was a western division striker who could dispossess you.”
“On a practice court, maybe," Jean says. "Try to get it away from me during a game.”
Jeremy leans back, bracing himself on gloved hands. “Luckily, I won't ever have to.”
In which Jean Moreau and Jeremy Knox play exy, share a dorm room, and accidentally insult each another a lot.
between hoping and believing by cryptidkidprem (T | 47,332 | 7/7)
Jean convinced himself a long time ago that he doesn't have a soulmate. Or maybe he just wants to believe that. Things would be easier if he was destined to be alone. It will at least hurt less when he inevitably winds up that way anyway.
And then there's Jeremy, who's been dreaming of meeting his match for years. For some reason, Jeremy seems determined to convince Jean that sometimes he might actually be able to have the things he hopes for, and that soulmate or no, Jean Moreau has people who will stick with him.
Two Bros Five Feet Apart by Leahelisabeth (fortheloveofcamelot) (M | 27,220 | 9/9)
Jeremy sniffed as he looked at his computer screen and the email he had just opened up. Every colourful picture and excited blurb just another stab to his tattered heart. And there at the bottom, the biggest blow of all, “non-refundable.”
He sighed and slammed his laptop shut, not caring that his rough treatment could damage it. Right now, he wanted to damage something. A significant portion of his savings had gone into these tickets and now he had nothing to show for it, no girlfriend, no awesome vacation, and absolutely zero chill.
Jeremy's girlfriend dumps him on the eve of a romantic vacation. Jean fills in.
dreams of being golden by poetatertot (M | Incomplete | 6/8)
The ocean is a healer. This Jeremy knows better than anyone. It’s why he came back himself, when all turned to nothing; it’s why he took the others under his roof when the shadows at their back threatened to swallow them whole. It’s why he lets Jean in when he shows up suddenly, his pale face a soft light in the darkness. Jeremy sees him and knows he can’t subsist as he is, alone.
The ocean can’t change Jean’s past, but maybe it can wash his future into smooth, clean sand the way it did for so many others.
Stupid (for you) by justdk (T | 1,647 | 1/1)
He’s not the only who cares for Jean, the entire team has his back, wants to see him get better. But Jeremy’s the only one who is completely, helplessly in love with Jean Moreau and it hurts.
Face to the Sun by Leahelisabeth (fortheloveofcamelot) (G | 1,272 | 1/1)
Jeremy and Jean have been pining for each other for too long. The Trojans plan an intervention.
Series: Part 3 of All for the Game Tumblr Prompts
Shield for a Heart by neilskey (spellitwithyourpeas) (M | 54,949 | 16/16)
“It’s your choice, but you’re rotting away in here, Jean and no matter what she says, you can’t live in Abby’s spare bedroom forever. Time to start fighting again.”
Kevin’s hard and commanding tone was no surprise. The softness had been beaten out of him around the same time as Jean.
“What if I don’t want to anymore?”
Maybe it was because he had been half hidden in shadows-Jean had kept the shades drawn, but light still seeped in the cracks- but Jean thought he had seen something akin to understanding paint Kevin’s cool expression. “He’s gone. You survived. Play or don’t, it’s up to you, but you need to get out of this fucking house.” // Jean's first year at USC. Jeremy falls hard, Jean comes around eventually.
/Graphic Depictions of Violence
eyes wide open by jaylocked (T | 13,496 | 2/2)
Jean blinked. Blinked again. Was sure he didn’t recognize the man on his doorstep, with his bright eyes and enormous grin and wavy blonde hair. Waited for him to explain himself with a simple raised eyebrow.
“Hi!” the man finally chirped. The sound was happiness channeled into a single word, and Jean wasn’t sure how he didn’t hate him already.
(based on the prompt from tumblr: "hi sorry I live below you and I hear your dog running around and barking all the time and– no no it's fine I was just wondering if I could pet it?" au)

Neil/Riko
burn, baby, burn by wesninskids (M | Incomplete | 3/?)
Nathaniel Wesninski is Riko’s precious #2, his best backliner, weapon of choice, and only mercenary—the first piece of his Perfect Court: in exchange of everything, thirteen year old Nathaniel gets his number tattooed on his cheekbone and becomes Riko’s partner for better or for worse. Soon Kevin Day and Jean Moreau join the envied line of Ravens and become partners in their turn, and the four of them chase after glory and find the missing pieces of their Perfect Court one player after the other, drunk on power and victory, caring for one another no matter what.
But then Nathaniel strikes a deal with Lola Malcolm to protect himself, and it’s all downhill from here.

I’ve been trying to find this fic for a while of Neil and Andrew. It’s post college and Neil was homeless but then started staying in Andrews apartment while he was out of town. Once Andrew gets back they make and deal and Neil starts helping Andrew with cases. Andrew is a consulting detective that’s helps the NYPD. I loved the story so far and I can’t seem to find it. I’d love it so much if you could look for it :)

Not An Angel

by LFMH021
Neil is no angel. He was raised a warrior, he was raised a runner, he was raised with knives in his hands. He was originally raised a Wesninski.
The Foxes [and sometimes Andrew] tend to forget this. Until one day they are reminded in a very gruesome way.
[One of Nathan’s goons turns up to try attacking the Foxes. Neil succumbs to older instincts – killing to survive. His expert hands and emotionless gaze as the man dies causes a tension Neil never expected to receive from his Foxes, sending Neil in a spiral of confusion whether to stay as Neil or Nathaniel.]

“Three,” Wymack argues.
“Four or we have no deal.”

ode to sleep by jaylocked (T | 2,977 | 1/1)
Andrew’s barely even noticing his surroundings by the time he walks through the automatic doors, more ready for a Slurpee than he’s ever been in his whole life, but the sight of an attractive man effectively disarming and disabling a guy with a gun gets his attention pretty quickly.
(written for the prompt: “Ok, so what if neil & andrew meet in a 7-11 where they both go when they can’t sleep at night bc both of them are insomniacs + they’re always half asleep so it takes them a while to notice each other.”)

He shoots Andrew a glare. “I said, don’t call me kid. You’re not old enough to pull that off.” He cocks his head with a considering look. “Am I actually taller than you?”
Andrew returns the glare. “That’s enough backtalk, Josten.”
A smirk unfurls on the perp’s lips, even as Andrew cuffs him to the car.

A Chance To Start Again by eikoexe (M | Incomplete | 9/?)
Andrew Minyard was a consulting detective - probably one of the best. He lived a life alone and only kept well to his demands, solving more crimes than nobody could think possible. Wymack usually said he was stuck up on the job, Renee had been suggesting he could find himself someone to live with, just so he wouldn’t live a life full of solitude.

The headlines had screamed, ‘WORLD WAR II ENDS AMERICAN AND RUSSIAN POWER OVERWHELMS FOE,’ but if he didn’t report to his superior officer in—he checked the watch he had nicked off a man in a Dior suit back in New York—five minutes, he would face a firing squad or a foreign prison in about seven.
