These are all very good points and I agree, but there's another one I've noticed that I'd like to add

The lack of accessibility that acts as a barrier for disabled people

actual criticisms of academia:

cost of education acting as class barrier

exploitation of graduate workers

colonialist past and present

ties to military industrial complex

danger of power structure entrenching and justifying orthodox views on social issues

criticisms of academia that get made:

those damn ivory tower academics are wasting money learning about things

No ok so I was rereading this old sb! fic from like years ago and it’s aliens and there’s a language barrier so like tommy is human and there’s the 3 alien characters who are obviously techno phil and wil but tommy has like weird nicknames for them but like it’s obviously those 3 and im reading and it’s great and then the universal translator gets introduced and Tommy learns their names but wil’s character keeps going by the nickname and I don’t even notice bc like it’s a long fic and he’s been that nickname for so long but like I’m almost at the end and I realize the author wrote wil out of the fic so this alien character that is so obviously based on him is actually an oc it’s not wil you can read this fic in good conscious bc you’re not reading a fic with wil even tho it was written literal years before anything came out about him it’s an oc. Who really likes music
