Clean Up | Shot XX Katu
Tumblr media
Katu's animation, compared to the rough animation, actually had to undergo a change to accomodate the difference in the size of the Tuk in my background. As a result, the animation was actually shortened. Where Katu would first get up, crouch down, grab the rail, and jump out of the vehicle, now they simply get up, and the crouching down to get out of the Tuk was combined with the jumping action such that it created one seamless arc. I also feel that this looks more natural, as earlier the motion followed an up-down-up again-down again path, whereas this only contains the former two.
Tumblr media
When animating Katu flinging the money at the driver, I took inspiration from an attack in the Pokemon series; Payday, wherein the user flings a set of coins at the foe to deal damage. These visuals, from what I could find, were never put to animated form and stayed within the games themselves, so I had plenty of room to express my own creativity.
On the notes in particular, I made sure to add the icon of a bird on the far side. This is because in Sri Lankan currency, most notes feature pictures of avian life that live in Sri Lanka, and I wanted this aspect of culture to be retained in this version of Colombo that I had created. Ultimately though, these are split frame cameos and no one would really notice unless they rewatched the film, or stopped to look at the animation frame by frame.
In the final palette, I chose to give the notes a blue tinge, similar to our own 50 Rupee note, and the coins a copper-gold colour, like most of our coins (although these days, the country has switched to silver. I felt that using gold however, would allow for more legibility as to what it was Katu was throwing, and how noticeable it is against a darker background). I am quite satisfied with the outcome of this shot, however there are many things that could be improved upon in post in order to give certain elements more priority and clarity.

Research for the Old Dutch Hospital in Colombo
Sri lanka occupied by - Portuguese (1505-1656), - Dutch (1656-1796), - and the British (1796-1948). - maritime provinces of Sri Lanka were occupied by the Dutch from 1658 to 1796 until they were succeeded by the British who conquered Sri Lanka in 1815 - central highlands being under the control of the kings of Kandy - in 1815, the British managed also to annex the Kandyan kingdom by means of a treaty with Kandyan chiefs (who had turned against their king) - Located in Central Colombo, currently known as Fort (built by dutch after their capture of cmb from portuguese) - The Dutch Hospital atm is an old dilapidated and unoccupied building - was the country's leading hospital during the Dutch occupation
Architecture
the walls are over 50 cm (Shared feature with almost every other dutch building in SL)
the walls are over 50 cm. thick and the teak beams are massive both in girth and length
A long and wide open verandah runs along the length of each wing
High walls, Low windows, Spacious Verandahs provide comftbl environment
*Courtyard was overgrown with vegetation, no longer present
*Multiple canals present built by the dutch in and around cmb for transport those within the port are no longer there (filled up by the british after they captured Colombo
Was in desperate need of repairs by the 18th century.
Several shortcomings apart from lack of accomodation
Shortly after gaining control of the city, the Dutch commander-in-chief replanned it by demolishing all buildings that had been left standing
The Dutch hospital was probably built shortly afterwards, but a definitive date is not available
Smells fumed in through open lavateries
washing room did not have its own well (horrible situation in the dry season, extra money spent on getting buckets of water from nearby wells)
Intention, Mission, Objectives
The declared intention of the Dutch in establishing the Colombo hospital, as well as other hospitals in the maritime provinces, was to look after the health of the officers and other staff serving under the Dutch East India Company
"it has been considered that it is a duty of the Company to restore the health of its officers who are on board ships as well as in the outposts"
"its [the Company's] invalid officers could be brought back to their former state of health with the blessings of the God only by way of good care and attention, therefore it is necessary to issue clear instructions to the senior surgeons who are in the service of the Company in the country to perform their duties diligently".
The Company intended to provide a sufficiently large hospital in Colombo to cater for the local Dutch population as well as the floating population.
this [hospital] is a place where the Company shows its sympathy with its suffering servants and wishes them to have every comfort. For this reason also regents are appointed to see that nothing wrong is done by the doctor or the steward.
SLAVES WERE DENIED ADMISSION
Dutch East India Company was formed in Amsterdam in 1602
Staff
Medical staff consisted of
A chief Surgeon
1 surgeon
3 junior surgeons
3 third surgeons
5 interns
Ship Surgeons used to be appointed to hospitals.
Even unqualified people with medical/surgical talent were appointed as surgeons
Non medical staff included a steward who was offered fix sums of money per patient. He was responsible for purchasing of provisions.
A meal provided to an ordinary patient inclided beef soup and a dessert.
This steward saw to each patient and also to the cleanliness of the hospital as well.
Another staff was the cook, porter, laundryman(SL NATIVE) and **several slaves.
No indication of nurses present. During the times the hospitals had "Attendants" serve patients and they had no training
Various injuries were catered to in the hospital
Diseases found here were
Dropsy
Common cold and fevers
epilepsy
diarrhoea
scabies
dysentery
Leach bites
Malaria
Leprosy
"More soldiers in the hospital than in the garrison"
Was the largest hospital at that time.
Accommodation for only 180 patients at the beginning
pleas were made for reconstruction to accommodate more patients
Enlargened, improved in 1786 with new buildings (apothecary and dispensary)
At the end the hospital took in max 300 patients
Colombo had the highest dutch population in the country
consisted of Military personnel, civilians (merchants) and seafarers
Military personnel reached as much high as 4,600 during the 1750s and dropped to 3,800 in 1780.
Reputation - ""think the Company has no better hospital in all the Indies than here in Colombo, since here various and costly medicines are prepared, and there is a doctor to be found, provided with a good laboratory, together with three assistants who are experienced in medicines"" - Heydt - It is very properly divided into distinct wards, so as to keep the sick of different disorders completely separate, and thus prevent infection from spreading. - Cpt Robert Percival
the British later used this building as a hospital as well SOURCE: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1139507/pdf/medhist00075-0072.pdf

The chapter 1 in class 10th ncert Political science book shows the problems in Belgium and sri lanka. It shows how accomodation and majoritarianism yield different results. This is exactly what bjp is doing, the agenda these people have will destroy the secularism in India entirely. As a queer woman in india, who has always spoken about secularism and rights for every religion, I fear for the religious minorities in our country. People like Smriti Irani being the women's and children's welfare minister does not really help our case (re: the paid days off for a period).
And quite frankly, our people aren't any better
like this guy, I think we all know him
The bjp government introduced the ucc bill in Uttarakhand which has made it mandatory for live in couples to register with the government and a copy of the registration will be sent to respective families. It also added the father as a first class legal heir for inheritance of property, encroaching upon the the right of the mother, wife, daughter (the actual victims of patriarchy, who most likely did not have any social right to gain access to financial independence or inheritance from other family members) to accommodate the father, who more than likely than not already has financial freedom and ownership rights over land property. Moving on, they removed the Muslim personal law, which guaranteed the rights of the daughter in a fixed inheritance percentage. Not to mention the whole act is modelled after hindu personal laws and demanding other religions to bend according to it is inherently regressive no matter how progressive the law on paper looks to be. So should I just bang my head against the wall right now and be done with it or watch as the bjp government slowly sets fire to all our lives?

The blood-soaked cup.
Tumblr media
April 11,2022
Normally, WoW confines its opinions strictly to issues having to do with politics. But today finds us venturing into the world of sport. Recently, the US men's soccer team qualified for the World Cup, the quadrennial tournament that is the most-watched sporting event on the planet. And while we applaud their accomplishment, it must also be noted that the sponsor of this competition is a brazenly corrupt organization and the host country a horribly barbaric society.
Founded in 1904, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is the governing body of the world's most popular sport. But for years that organization has been a hotbed of unbridled corruption. In 2015, for example, fourteen of its directors were indicted in the US over alleged bribery, fraud and money laundering in connection with an estimated $150 million worth of media and marketing rights for FIFA games in the Americas. At the same time, ousted FIFA president Sepp Blatter and board member Michel Platini were charged with fraud by Swiss authorities over a bribe to ensure Blatter's reelection.
In 2010, FIFA announced that the 2018 World Cup would be played in Russia (a brutal dictatorship) and the Persian Gulf nation of Qatar (a brutal monarchy) would host it in 2022. But, as The New York Times reported, US Department of Justice investigators determined that money was paid (we don't know how much) "to five members of FIFA’s top board ahead of the 2010 vote to choose Russia and Qatar as hosts."
Beyond the bribery, Qatar was a problematic choice for several reasons. For one, its intense summer heat meant FIFA had to move the tournament to November. Further, the tiny nation (about twice the size of Delaware) had almost no existing infrastructure to support the games. Which is why the oil-rich country doled out a staggering $200 billion to build seven new stadiums, an airport, hotels, roads and a public transport systems.
But, as The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre testified, all that construction led to human rights abuses against as many as 24,000 migrant workers from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka who toiled on those projects. In addition to unpaid wages and withheld benefits, these workers endured squalid accomodations and working conditions so unsafe as to cause the deaths of 50 workers and injuries to some 38,000 in 2021 alone, according to the International Labour Organization.
Amidst the hype and hoopla, the games and goals, we shouldn't forget that this year's soccer World Cup comes covered in sordid corruption and needless deaths.

30.06.22
HUNGARIAN INFERNO
Arrived in Budapest just in time for the record breaking heat wave. Slightly grouchy and tired from the train I lay on my bunk for the entire afternoon to escape the heat and catch up on the Sri Lanka Test. I was roused to join a mate for dinner and after a piquiant napolitana we met up with some comrades from Vienna for a bench beer. I peeled off and went home to shower as i was meeting up with a Swede named Helga I met in Prague. During our initial conversations in Czechia she painfully struggled to understand anything i said, even as the yanks and poms around were understood clearly. I had promised her I'd work on my accent before getting the drink and after some initial blank looks I resorted to speaking with a little quasi english accent which worked for the time being. One of the most prominent experiences i've found as i meet new people is the indecipherability of my antipodean accent to non-native anglophones - fark. this has been annoying in some circumstsnces but at on this evening it wasn't a huge problem as Helga was particularly laconic and managed not to drive any conversation (she spoke very good english have it be known) so I left after a lager and met up with some others from the accomodation.

Waiting for any media to mention the Sri Lankan Muslim community was targeted and infiltrated by Wahhabi Islam like -
Tumblr media
On top of everything else, it’s genuinely offensive for them to just sit there and wax poetic about the civil war, and how SADLY, OH SO SADLY, Sri Lanka will never be free of its violent past *cue heartbreaking violin music*. I’ve seen a minumum of fifteen op-eds about this, and wtf? After that nutjob drove his lorry into people in France, nobody actually said “You know what, Marseille’s sort of a shit city and people get murdered there every day, so” (which they maybe should have, btw, because if anyone in the media or government cared about anything happening outside Paris, we wouldn’t be in this mess rn). But somehow, whenever non-white people Do The Thing, all subtlety goes out the window and the conversation becomes Eh, it’s what they’re like.
Anyway: I don’t want to claim I know any profound truth, because we’ll have to wait for an investigation and I may be dead wrong about who’s behind these disgusting and cowardly attacks, anyway, but still - it’d be nice if people stopped pretending Islam is all the same and all equally valid. Wahhabi Islam (which, I’m sorry, is not valid in any way and is propagated by one of the worst regimes the world has ever seen) came to Sri Lanka in the 1970s, piggy-backing on the oil boom and new trade ties between Colombo and Riyadh. There were concerns pretty much immediately, because to Wahhabi Islam, local Sri Lankan Islam (Sufism) is basically worse than anything (Sufis. listen. to. music.), and predictably, the community started to splinter and fight. This included fatwas, murders, intimidation, arson - and even desecration of corpses. And next, the usual playbook we’ve seen in other Asian, African and European countries: the Saudi money raining like Murgo red gold on those communities - the charities, the cultural centres, the scholarships to study in the Middle East, the free mosques. Meanwhile, the UN mostly blabbered on about ‘freedom of religion’ and insisted local authorities should do more to accomodate Wahhabi Muslims - whether they were influenced by Saudi officials or genuinely thought they were doing something decent, it’s hard to know.
Truth is, Saudi Arabia is still the West’s darling because a) oil and b) they oppose Iran. That’s it. Everything else, from their appalling record on human rights to their heavy involvement in terror attacks all over the world, has been swept under the carpet. And now Israeli PM Netanyahu is getting all chummy with them, they will be even harder to oppose. So as a short do and don’t:
please be aware this is a problem
please support Saudi dissidents
please question your government’s friendship and deals with Riyadh
please vote for candidates who take a stand
please learn to see Islam as a plural community
but also
please don’t drag the Jews into this one (I’ve seen the usual theories that Saudis are actually Jews out to destroy the world and come on)
