Top 5 Peaks for Beginners in NEPAL
Mountain climbing is one of the most incredible sports. People climb mountains for many reasons. Thrill seekers like to challenge themselves, some climb for fun, but for others the desire to reach the heights of Nepal grows over the years. The journey through the valleys, hills and mountains is a sight to behold as it makes you understand why people spend the night challenging themselves to reach the top of the mountain. Besides the inspiring views, there are many reasons to be motivated to climb mountains. Mountaineering is also an opportunity for cultural exchange and a chance to see how the locals live. Overall, mountain climbing is a rewarding experience where you can develop friendships, learn new skills, and open your mind to new possibilities.
If you are one of those people who are looking for a challenge, is it natural for you to wonder if mountain climbing is good? I don't have mountain climbing experience, can I climb the mountain? Maybe you have climbed high places like Everest Base Camp, Annapurna region or traveled all over the world and want to explore high places? Maybe you want to climb Everest one day or even the highest mountain in the world but you don't know where to start? But you will finally have the time and motivation to at least try mountain climbing or there may be thousands of other motivations.
Here is an article to help you by giving you the 5 best figures suitable for the beginner climbers. The days at the top will be tough, but that's the beauty of climbing. After all, "The best view comes after the hardest climb".
1. Mera Peak 6476M
Details:
Elevation: 6,476 m / 21,246 ft
Climbing Experience Level: Beginners
Type: Non-technical/mountain climbing type
Location: Makalu Barun National Park
When to climb: March-May or September-November
Accomodation: Tea houses and 1-2 camps above 5000M
What makes Mera Peak suitable for beginner level climbers is its non-technical climbing style. What are we talking about? Simply put, the climb does not require fixed ropes, ice axes, ladders or other alpine techniques to climb to the top. It's safe to hike in your hiking boots and crampons. Walking in your cleats can take a little practice, but once you put these shoes on, you'll get the hang of them in no time.
From Mera Base Camp to the top of the mountain, you will walk on ice and snow. This will be the hardest part of your entire journey. Mera Base Camp is not included in many other tours, but we believe this is the best option when attempting to climb Mera Peak. This will give climbers an extra day to rest/decompress at 5400M. It's no use running up a hill, your body is not doing well and is breaking down on your last step up.
The high pitch of the Mera 6100M is another highlight of this trip. The camp was built in the shadow of what appears to be a fallen mountain. Both the Mera base and the high camp expose you to alpine camping.
Once you start your ascent from the high camp, the view of the surrounding mountains gets better and better and never ends. From the top of Mera Peak, you will have the widest and best view of the Himalayas due to its geographical location. 8000M+ peaks like Mount Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, Cho-Oyu and Kanchenjunga are seen. Other mountains like Ama Dablam, Baruntse, Chamlang are also visible in the distance. Like any other mountaineering trip, the whole climb is physically and mentally challenging. But once you're on top, it's worth it.
2. Island Peak 6189M
Details:
Elevation: 6,189 meters / 20,305 feet
Experience Level of Climbers: Beginner
Type: Semi-technical Climbing/Jummar
Location: Everest Khumbu Region/Imja Valley
When to climb: March-May or September-November
Accommodation: Tea house and alpine camp at Island Peak BC and high camp
Island Peak 6189M, is one of the most popular peaks in Nepal. The ascent of the island follows Everest Base Camp and is included in the itinerary. Although this peak is smaller than Mera Peak, the final descent from the summit is the last steep, almost 90 degree vertical drop.
Island Peak, which is classified as a semi-technical climb, in which we say that the climbers will use fixed ropes to climb up and abseil while descending down. Summit Day is the most difficult, as it can be a physical and mental challenge for beginner climbers. There is a wide gap along the trail, so climbers will also need to use a ladder (which must be installed) from the base camp to the upper camp. This part of the climb makes it one of the best climbing experiences to learn mountaineering skills and also gives climbers an understanding of the level of fitness needed to scale larger mountains.
The summit is very exposed and only a few climbers can fit at a time. That said, once you reach the top, you will feel the joy of accomplishment and the surrounding Himalayan views will make it worthwhile.
3. Chulu West Peak 6419M
Details:
Elevation: 6,419 m / 21,059 ft
Experience Level of Climbers: Beginner
Type: Semi-technical/Jummar
Location: Annapurna Region, Manang District
When to climb: April - May or September - November
Accommodation: Tea house and alpine garden in Chulu West BC and high camp
Chulu West 6419M Peak, is another mountain rising above 6000M in the north-midwestern part of Nepal. The peak is located in the beautiful area of the Annapurna region. Crossing one of the best hiking trails in the world, climbers set up at Chulu Base Camp from Ledar Village to begin their mountain climbing journey. The peak resides in the back of the great Annapurna massif, Himlung Himal in the northeast and in front is the great peak of Manaslu.
The climb of Chulu West Peak is a semi-technical climb, which makes it suitable for beginners climbers. With few technical aspects, climbers must rely on their stamina and physical strength when climbing. The climb is usually over ice and snow to the top of the mountain. Once at the top, climbers have a view of the Annapurna massif and the surrounding mountains of west-central Nepal.
Climbing in the Annapurna region can be a different experience than in the Everest region. If you want to go even further and enjoy one of the best routes in the world, climbing the Annapurna region is an experience in itself. Chulu West Peak is the right choice for climbers looking for a less crowded option.
4. East Lobuche Peak 6119M
Details:
Elevation: 6,119 m / 20,072 ft
Experience Level of Climbers: Beginner
Type: Semi-technical/Jummar
Location: Everest Khumbu Region
When to climb: April - May or September - November
Accommodation: Teahouses and alpine gardens in BC and high camp
Lobuche East 6119M Peak, is another famous peak above 6000m in Nepal. This figure is often used by the Everest team, as one of the top trainings before going on the Everest Expedition. The base camp is located just a day away from Everest base camp.
Lobuche East Peak is rated 2B, as is Island Peak. Climbers will want to use ropes to assist, abseil and feel comfortable on exposed terrain. The climb is mostly over snow, ice and rocks. The summit is narrow, exposed, and Everest is visible from the top of the mountain, unlike the top of Island Peak. The climb is a 60-70 degree climb and can be challenging for beginners climbers. It can also be the perfect mountain to climb whatever your climbing goals are.
5. Pisang Peak
Details:-
Elevation: 6,100 m / 20,013 ft
Climbing experience level: Beginners
Type: Semi-technical
Location: Annapurna Region, Manang District
When to climb: April - May or September - November
Accommodation: Lodges and alpine lodges in Chulu West BC
Pisang Peak is located in Manang District, Nepal. This summit is between Annapurna I and Manaslu. This is another peak above 6000 meters in the Annapurna region, suitable for beginner climbers. This peak also falls on the Annapurna Circuit and the climb begins after the picturesque town of Pisang.
Pisang Peak is listed as a 1B climb but features technical rock climbing on the way up. Fixed ropes should be used when climbing. Climbers must pass over rocks, ice and snow. Climbers will need to be in good physical condition while climbing like other mountains in Nepal.

Accomodation in Nepal
Finding a place to sleep is hardly ever a problem in Nepal, although only the established tourist centres offer much of a choice. Prices vary considerably, depending on where you stay and when. You can pay anything from a couple of dollars per night in a trekking lodge to more than $350 in a wildlife resort, but guesthouses, where most travellers stay, typically charge between $5 and $35.
Continue reading to find out more about...
Lodges
Guesthouses
Hotels and resorts
Village stays and homestays
Outside the high seasons (late September to mid-November and late February to late March), or if things are unusually quiet, prices can drop by up to fifty percent: the simple question “discount paunchha?” (“any discount?”) will often do the trick. Note that official tariffs don’t generally include the government and service taxes (13 percent and 10 percent respectively); rates are usually quoted as “plus plus”, meaning both need to be applied. Offers made on the spot at ordinary guesthouses, however, are generally all-in – make sure you check.
Most places have a range of rooms, from budget, shared-bathroom boxes to en suites with a/c and TVs. Single rooms are usually doubles offered at between half and two-thirds of the full price. Hotels and guesthouses take bookings, and reservations are often necessary in the busy seasons, during local festivals or if you’re arriving late at night.
Lodges
Off-the-beaten-track lodges are aimed at Nepali travellers, and are usually known as “hotel and lodge” (confusingly, the “hotel” bit means there’s somewhere to eat). Some are reasonably comfortable, but more often than not you’ll have to settle for something fairly insalubrious. Stark concrete floors, cold-water showers and smelly squat toilets are the rule, though you’ll rarely pay more than Rs350. It’s a good idea to bring your own sleeping-bag liner to protect against bedbugs and lice, and earplugs to block out the inevitable noise. In the Terai, try to get a room with a mosquito net and a working fan (or a/c).
This is not to say that Nepali lodges are to be avoided. Often the most primitive places – where you sit by a smoky fire and eat with your hosts – are the most rewarding. Trekking lodges on less-travelled routes can take this form, though there are some remarkably comfortable ones out there too.
Guesthouses
Many tourist-oriented places to stay in Nepal call themselves guesthouses. This category covers everything from primitive flophouses to well-appointed small hotels. Most places offer a spread of rooms at different prices, and sometimes dorm beds too. By and large, those that cater to foreigners do so efficiently: most innkeepers speak excellent English, and can arrange anything for you from laundry to trekking/porter hire.
Despite assurances to the contrary, you can’t necessarily count on constant hot water (many places rely on solar panels) nor uninterrupted electricity (power cuts are a daily occurrence, though some establishments have generators). If constant hot water is important to you, ask what kind of water-heating system the guesthouse has – best of all is “geyser” (pronounced “geezer”), which means an electric immersion heater or backup.
All but the really cheap guesthouses will have a safe, and the smarter places sometimes have security boxes in each room.
Budget guesthouses
Kathmandu and Pokhara have their own tourist quarters where fierce competition among budget guesthouses ensures great value. In these enclaves, all but the very cheapest places provide hot running water (though perhaps only sporadically), flush toilets, foam mattresses and clean sheets and blankets. Elsewhere in Nepal, expect rooms to be plainer and scruffier. Most guesthouses also offer some sort of roof-terrace or garden, a phone and TV. They’re rarely heated, however, making them rather cold in winter. Rooms in most budget places cost Rs300–1000, and standards vary considerably; the cheapest options often have shared bathrooms.
Mid-range guesthouses
Mid-range guesthouses (for lack of a better term) are increasingly popular. Rooms tend to be bigger and come with a fan (or even a/c), and often a phone and TV. Toilet paper is provided in the bathrooms, and the hot water is more reliable. The better ones will provide a portable electric heater in winter. Expect to pay Rs1000–3500 for a double room of this sort. Most mid-range guesthouses quote their prices in dollars, though you can pay in rupees and sometimes even with credit cards.
Hotels and resorts
It’s hard to generalize about the more expensive hotels and resorts. Some charge a hefty premium to insulate you from the Nepal you came to see, while others offer unique experiences. Prices for international-type features begin at around the $50 mark, but you should expect to pay in the region of $100 a night or more for a genuinely classy place. This guide also recommends several smaller resort hotels that offer something unique, like a breathtaking view or historic building. Jungle lodges and tented camps inside the Terai wildlife parks are typically the most expensive options of all, charging $250 plus a night.
Village stays and homestays
A growing number of programmes enable visitors to stay overnight in private homes in traditional villages far from the tourist trails. Village stays (also called village tourism or homestays) offer a unique opportunity for comfortable cultural immersion, and could become a good way to disperse visitors and spread the economic benefits of tourism into rural areas. The idea is that a tour operator contracts with a whole village to accommodate and entertain guests; rooms in local houses are fitted with bathrooms and a few tourist-style comforts, host families are trained to prepare meals that won’t disturb delicate Western constitutions, and a guide accompanies the guests to interpret, if necessary.
There are numerous village tourism programmes, including one in Chisapani, southeast of Pokhara near Rup Tal, run by the reputable Pokhara-based Child Welfare Scheme, and others that can be organized in and around Tansen and Bandipur. A few language institutes and other organizations in Kathmandu and Patan also organize homestays with families in and around the valley. Outside of Kathmandu, Ghalegaun, Ghandruk, Panauti are famou for organizing private as well as community homestays.

The blood-soaked cup.
April 11,2022
Normally, WoW confines its opinions strictly to issues having to do with politics. But today finds us venturing into the world of sport. Recently, the US men's soccer team qualified for the World Cup, the quadrennial tournament that is the most-watched sporting event on the planet. And while we applaud their accomplishment, it must also be noted that the sponsor of this competition is a brazenly corrupt organization and the host country a horribly barbaric society.
Founded in 1904, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is the governing body of the world's most popular sport. But for years that organization has been a hotbed of unbridled corruption. In 2015, for example, fourteen of its directors were indicted in the US over alleged bribery, fraud and money laundering in connection with an estimated $150 million worth of media and marketing rights for FIFA games in the Americas. At the same time, ousted FIFA president Sepp Blatter and board member Michel Platini were charged with fraud by Swiss authorities over a bribe to ensure Blatter's reelection.
In 2010, FIFA announced that the 2018 World Cup would be played in Russia (a brutal dictatorship) and the Persian Gulf nation of Qatar (a brutal monarchy) would host it in 2022. But, as The New York Times reported, US Department of Justice investigators determined that money was paid (we don't know how much) "to five members of FIFA’s top board ahead of the 2010 vote to choose Russia and Qatar as hosts."
Beyond the bribery, Qatar was a problematic choice for several reasons. For one, its intense summer heat meant FIFA had to move the tournament to November. Further, the tiny nation (about twice the size of Delaware) had almost no existing infrastructure to support the games. Which is why the oil-rich country doled out a staggering $200 billion to build seven new stadiums, an airport, hotels, roads and a public transport systems.
But, as The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre testified, all that construction led to human rights abuses against as many as 24,000 migrant workers from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka who toiled on those projects. In addition to unpaid wages and withheld benefits, these workers endured squalid accomodations and working conditions so unsafe as to cause the deaths of 50 workers and injuries to some 38,000 in 2021 alone, according to the International Labour Organization.
Amidst the hype and hoopla, the games and goals, we shouldn't forget that this year's soccer World Cup comes covered in sordid corruption and needless deaths.

Anyone fancy a beanie test knit? It's such a long time since I started working on this pattern, but I finally had the chance to get the design written and am nearly ready to go. The hat is cabled, and worked in the round using Aran weight yarn and 2 sizes of needle (5 & 5.5mm, which if memory serves is US8 & 9). Both of these hats were knit in Drops Nepal. One size is given (Adult) with suggestions on modifying for a larger or smaller hat. Ideally I'd like 2 testers; what I am mostly checking is whether the sections where you have to move the stitch marker to accomodate the cabling are easy to follow. Let me know if you're interested, and fancy knitting a hat in the next few days! I know this close-up is too small to get a good idea of the finished hat; I'll try and post that in my Stories 🙂 #testknittersneeded #testknitting #aranaccessories #beanieknitpattern #cableknithat #dropsgarn #dropsyarn #dropsfan #dropsnepal #aranknitting #knithatpattern #knittersgonnaknit #instaknit #knitstagram #cableknitbeanie https://www.instagram.com/p/CGK03VWpl5w/?igshid=1vgyi2abzil7a

Lumbini- The Land of Spiritual Awakening
The birthplace of Lord Buddha, Lumbini, is a Buddhist pilgrimage site best known as a place where Buddha achieved enlightenment. Lumbini, which is situated about 350 km south-west of Kathmandu, Nepal is also enlisted under the World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1197. The place carries great significance as it stands as the primary pivotal place of the life of Buddha. The monuments, monasteries and museums there exhibit the roots, beliefs and culture of Buddhists.
Attraction Sites in Lumbini
Including the Lumbini temple, there are several other old temples as well like the Mayadevi temple whereas, other temples funded by Buddhist Organizations are still under construction. There is also a Holy Pond widely known as Puskarini where it is believed that Buddha’s mother took a dip prior to his birth and the very place where Buddha took his first bath. The Ashoka Pillars are among the earliest sculptural remains and are regarded as important sites from the life of Buddha. People also visit the Buddhist Pagoda style built shrine known as the World Peace Pagoda. It is located at the opposite end to Eternal flame. Considered as an oasis of peace, it is certainly a great place to meditate. Next, we have a religious monument built in a Burmese style which gives a regal look to its entire structure. This religious site known as Myanmar Golden Temple is wholly dedicated to Lord Buddha. Besides them all, there has been a sanctuary set up for the cranes in Nepal at Lumbini Crane Sanctuary.
Best Time to Visit Lumbini
People commemorate the birth of Buddha and his teachings. Thus, the people celebrate Buddha Jayanti and that is when the town comes back to life. To witness this auspicious occasion, April and May are the best months to visit Lumbini. However, when the weather is switched to autumn from monsoon, that is the months of October and November, those are the best seasons to visit Lumbini as the temperature will have cooled down a little and the weather in Lumbini will have been perfect to view the sunset and sunrise.
How to Get to Lumbini
Exploring the nooks of Lumbini comes to be quite pocket friendly yet enriching. People wanting to travel to Lumbini may depart from either Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan or India. You can also take a ride via bus from Kathmandu if you are willing to run through the forests of Nepal. To roam around the streets and alleys of the spiritual land, you are also made accessible to road maps and itineraries.
Accomodations in Lumbini
You will find most of the accommodation options located nearby the Lumbini Bazar. During auspicious occasions, accommodations may be used to its full capacity and in that case, you may stay at the nearest town Bhairahawa. The restaurants and hotels are well maintained and meets its standard threshold.
To make your visit enriching yet convenient, Buddha Air has been the frequently rated as the best means to achieve your goals. To learn more about the exciting packages it offers, please refer to Buddha Holidays and book your seat right away! You surely wouldn’t want to miss out on this spiritual stroll around the alleys of the religious land. Would you?
