ACADEMIC PROFILE
I am Emmanuel Ifeanyi Ogar, a native of Obudu in Cross River State which is located in the southern region of Nigeria also known as Niger Delta. I was born in Lagos State, a metropolitan city around the South-Western region of my country which as of the time of my birth in the late eighties was the capital of Nigeria.
Early years
My early age of education could be traced back to the year 1991, from Nigeria Air Force nursery and primary school Victoria Island Lagos.
I was a student until 1996 when my parents have to relocate because my father been a military personal was posted out from Lagos state to River state, precisely Port-Harcourt.
I completed my primary education with Airforce Primary School Port-Harcourt Rivers State, after which I sat for the first school leaving certificate examination.
Background
Following my elementary schooling, I was accepted into a high secondary school and enrolled as a student. During my final level in secondary school, I participated in the West Africa senior secondary school examination which was compulsory for all high school graduates as much as criteria for further studies into the university.
On completion of my higher secondary school, I secured a job with a non-governmental organization where I worked as a freelancer volunteer for a year.
Within the period as a volunteer, I had the opportunity of; Supporting and caring for the less privileged in the society, supporting the elderly in their day-to-day activities, carrying children to school and back from school, engaging in community outreach on sanitation matters, mentoring little children of age 6 to 9, tutor children after school, help organize and sort donations for the less privileged.
Professional Experiences
Moreover, I left the NGO for a paid job with a construction company which I was a junior site supervisor.
My role as a site supervisor was as follows;
· To supervise workers daily
· Ensure that materials for work are used judiciously
· To keep records of work done with the time frame at the site and after
· Compiling staff rotas, dealing with leave requests and arranging cover when necessary
· Planning workloads, allocating tasks and monitoring progress against targets
· Briefing their teams on new initiatives, changes to targets, and company news
· Maintaining safety standards, conducting risk assessments, ensuring staff have adequate first aid and fire safety training
· Devising work schedules and implementing deadlines
· Ensuring that quality standards are upheld
My deep desire to succeed despite any unforeseen obstacle has motivated me to work hard at all times, this has been my nature. I became demanding for my ambition, so I decided to forfeit the job to further my education.
Then again, my aspiration for a technical and competitive career prompted me to take up one of the most coveted undergraduate programs (computer science).
Higher Education Background
However, I enrolled for the joint admission and matriculation board examination which I passed and gained admission into the university to study my preferred course.
In other words, I've always had a strong interest in subjects that need an analytical approach. From my early days in high school, mathematics has always intrigued me. At some point in high school, the most challenging of all problems were my favourites and obtaining solutions to them leaves me mesmerized. I always did and would want to thrive on solving those challenging problems.
The most endearing feature of computer science is its rich amalgamation of physical and mathematical science.
Nevertheless, my 100 level courses were mixed with both physical sciences and linguistic. Linguistics helped in shaping and building my vocabularies in terms of writing English essays.
Then again, as I proceed to the next level (200 level) in my undergraduate study, I studied courses like data structure and file system, theory of computer science, computer organization and systems programming, microprocessor-based design and basic programming languages in JAVA script, Python, C++, and C.
These courses helped me to gain a stronger background in the fundamentals of computer science which were aptly complemented by the laboratory courses.
The challenging assignments that were a part of the laboratory courses helped me to develop the required technical and programming skills needed to excel more in the course.
Similarly, during the last two years of my study, I took an advanced courses like; Database programming, compiler design, artificial intelligence, operating systems, queueing systems, modelling and simulation, electronic design and computer networking.
In other words, the computing B.Sc. level skills I acquired upon graduating from the university have gained me significant knowledge of how computers and some other electronic gadgets operate and the theory behind them. Actually, as a computer analyst or data programmer, I’ve come to realize that, data coding could be seen among the bedrock of technology in the world at large because of its high demands and value.
Most importantly, upon graduation, I was awarded a Bachelor degree in Computer Science from the faculty of science at the prestigious Rivers State University of Science and Technology Port-Harcourt Nigeria. To that end, why I was waiting for the national assignment posting called National Youth Service Corps. I got involved in learning a skill from a mechanical workshop.
Skills acquired
During the period, I acquired skills like; How to diagnose a vehicle using a computerized system(laptop), test driving vehicles after repairs are completed to ensure mechanical soundness and to determine whether any other problem exists, how to file appropriate documentation on each repair, provide customers with detailed estimates for repairs and replacements and obtain, signature approval before commencing work.
On receiving my posting letter for my national assignment, I resigned from my apprenticeship with the mechanic workshop.
Then again, I was posted to a primary school for my NYSC (National Youth Service Corp) assignment. Getting to primary school, I was assigned to the post of teacher assistant.
As an assistant to the class teacher my duties were as follows;
· To ensure that the students are in good conduct
· To assist the class teacher in marking the student’s assignment
In conclusion, I will say I have learnt and equipped my mind for the challenges ahead in all ramifications of life.

• The Norman Foster Foundation presents the second edition of its annual Digital X Workshop with public debates in which practitioners from the fields of design and innovation will participate, including Amber Case, W. Daniel Hillis, Mary Lou Jepsen, David Moinina Sengeh, Nicholas Negroponte and Ben Vickers.
• The 2019 Digital X Workshop is designed to pose key questions and come up with some considered conclusions in a week-long event hosted in the Madrid headquarters of the Norman Foster Foundation.
• A distinguished group of specialists will engage with ten selected students from ten universities around the world who share a common interest in the subject. The workshop mentor is Nicholas Negroponte, co-founder and former director of MIT Media Lab.

The second edition of the Norman Foster Foundation Digital X Workshop will take place on 18-22 February 2019, in association with e-flux Architecture. ‘All things digital are simultaneously local and global, large and small, inside and outside of any given boundary’ states workshop mentor Nicholas Negroponte. ‘The digital world brings together previously separate worlds, like those of discovery, invention and expression. It does that because it has become the DNA of each. The natural world and the artificial world are becoming interchangeable. Change will happen very rapidly. Fasten your seatbelts.’
With that concept as a background, the workshop is designed to pose an key questions and come up with some considered conclusions . Can you build a city without infrastructure: no roads, no sewers, no water or power? Why bother? The answer is to renovate slums without bulldozing them, which is something that could impact two or three billion people. Call it a new autonomy, that of a house or a small community, taking some pages from outer space and bringing them back to earth.

After reviewing applications submitted by hundreds of candidates from around the world, the selection committee awarded ten scholarships to students from the following universities and institutions: American University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon; American University in Dubai, Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Ashesi University, Berekuso, Ghana; Cambridge University, Cambridge, United Kingdom; Cape Town University, Cape Town, South Africa; Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands; George Washington University, Washington, DC, United States; Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL, United States; Polytechnic University of Madrid, Madrid, Spain and the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China.
These ten students will be asked to park reality at the door. Inviting them to bring their most advanced thinking, craziest ideas, whether they relate to architecture or not, to apply them, their derivatives or simply their point of view to the needs of the world’s poorest people, especially the increasing number who live in slums.
The Digital X Workshop will include seminars, lectures, one-to-one tutoring and architectural tours to learn more about the context of Madrid culminating in a five day workshop led by the Atelier mentor, Nicholas Negroponte, co-founder and former director of MIT Media Lab.
e-flux Architecture will join this year’s edition of the Digital X workshop as its editorial partner. Editors Nikolaus Hirsch and Nick Axel will conduct a series of interviews during the duration of the workshop, the result of this joint initiative will be unveiled in Spring 2019.

What happens when the natural world and the artificial world become one and the same? How does society change when direct brain communication occurs among humans, and between humans and machines? The workshop will focus on this kinship, that of architecture and the digital world, how the two play together now, and how they will change the world together, going forward, discussing things that, outrageous today, will be commonplace tomorrow.

The first Norman Foster Foundation Robotics Atelier will take place on 20-24 November 2017, supported by the Rolex Institute.
Society is on the edge of being transformed through robotics and artificial intelligence. These technological innovations have the potential to change every aspect of our lives in far-reaching ways. Last June, in the Norman Foster Foundation’s inaugural forum ‘Future is Now’, a glimpse was given into how the world of construction would be revolutionised by these developments in what could prove to be a second digital era.
Ten scholarships have been given to students selected by the following universities and institutions: The Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, UK; Institute for Computational Design and Construction (ICD), Stuttgart, Germany; Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), Madrid, Spain; National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore; Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai, India; Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), MA, USA; Universidad Iberoamericana de Ciencias y Tecnología, Santiago, Chile; Ashesi University, Accra, Ghana; Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich, Switzerland; Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC), Barcelona, Spain.
The selected students will engage with a group of specialists through a series of seminars and lectures culminating in a five days workshop led by the Atelier mentor, Professor Mathias Kohler and his team. Leading robotics manufacturer Universal Robots will loan three units of their highly flexible robot arm, the UR5 Robot, to the Atelier.

1. Name. Ana Carlota Moura 2. Where is your hometown? I always have an interesting time answering this one. I would say Lisbon, because that is where I was physically born, but I feel my heart is in many other places I’ve lived in. However, now that I’m closer to ‘home’, I really feel Lisbon is where I am from. 3. What is your profession/career/title/self-label/designation? Curious and compassionate challenge-seeker/sustainability enthusiast/amateur musician & humanitarian data analyst 4. What was the journey like to get where you are (career wise)? When was the mental shift to start the journey? My mental shift to starting my career journey happened during the close time I was graduating in Anthropology. I was in Brazil at the time, becoming more and more interested in the challenges indigenous peoples face when living in urban settings, and I felt the academic tools I had were not enough to address and engage this reality wholeheartedly. My journey after that realization has taken me different places and allowed me to deepen my knowledge and practical skills in a search to achieve a more just world, in both socioeconomic and environmental dimensions. 5. What did you study in school? I studied fine art and graphic design in high school, Anthropology as a BSc and currently, I am doing a Masters in Sustainability and International Development, with a focus on renewable energy and agricultural transformation. 6. How is your life different from what you pictured at 20? Although 20 is not that long ago (I am 22 now), life is much more beautiful, free and inspiring than I pictured it back then. 7. Biggest accomplishment since making the (physical/mental) move? Travelling different countries out of my own curiosity and for projects I deeply care for, and feeling safe/free in this. Learning to trust people I meet along the way has also been a humbling exercise…People can be so much more generous than we expect them to be, and this is something I feel I have understood more and more: how interrelated we are, and how giving generates giving. 8. What was biggest disappointment and plan to overcome it? Having difficulty in building a relationship of trust and understanding whilst doing fieldwork in Peru. I worked in two NGOs, both involved in projects with Andean farming communities. One of the projects sought to strengthen rural communities’ capacities in tourism. The other project was on assisting indigenous youth in their academic careers, whilst also strengthening and revitalizing Quechua, an Andean indigenous language spoken by many of these communities, but unfortunately being used less and less. We were doing this by creating extra-curricular spaces where children (from primary to high school) could receive tutoring in order to succeed in school (dropout rates in rural areas are very high), whilst strengthening their native language, which most times was not used on a daily basis at their school, but was still the language their parents primarily communicated in. This generational divide, expressed by the chosen language of communication, is due to the prevailing prejudice against indigenous and peasant communities in Peru. So for the parents I was working with, prioritizing Quechua was not always the most strategic option, especially if they saw their children’s futures as being based in nearby cities. My response to the parent’s concerns regarding language preservation was for me to personally let go and respect their space and decisions in their relationship to me, and in the end, I felt my part was to understand their resistance to my hopes as an outsider and respect their own life projects and perceptions. We reformulated our project so as to respond to the real-life concerns of parents, whilst still keeping an expanding component of story-telling in order to support Quechua narratives and native oral history. When I let go of my romantic agenda of helping “save” Quechua, I realized the process of maintaining a language alive has to come from its speakers, especially children, who mostly use it for playing and in their daily chores. A part of this realization was learning the basics of Quechua and living with these families in their rural communities. One cannot judge what one does not know, and, as a European, I came to find my place in facilitating these communities’ intentions and projects, and not directing them. 9. Advice for other women? Putting self-trust and hope as the first feeling and thought that moves you towards any decision/movement you make, whilst leaving fear behind. 10. Knowing what we know now in current political climate, can women be "all that we can be" in today's world? What is the way forward, as you see it for "feminist values"? It depends on which women, with which past and current constraints, and what is for them being "all they can be". There is still a lot to be done in generating intra-sex equality, even within a country. I think the way forward for feminism and the search for equality between genders is to create communities of support within every workplace or arena that is still difficult for women (in their diversity) to be in. We need to be supportive of each other in order to have a bigger say in the public and private sphere. I believe informing other women (and men, and non-binary persons) of the challenges of representation and participation has an important role in creating this supportive environment at a local and global level. Additionally, these supportive environments should be everywhere we go, especially when travelling. I believe we are unstoppable as a collective. 11. Where in the world do you feel “tallest” (i.e. where is your happy place)? My happy 'place' is more a journey, than a 'place'. I feel the happiest, for example, when in a van/bike, going somewhere beautiful but unknown (a waterfall, a lake...) 12. What extra-curricular activities/hobbies are you most proud of? Why? An activity I am promoting and developing is C4SI (Collaborate for Social Innovation), a student-led programme that seeks to encourage students and international/non-profit organizations in engaging in social problem-solving through human-centred design. There is more and more, a shift to an integrated approach to innovation and entrepreneurship, which is seeking positive social impact, more than merely profit. C4SI tries to respond to this shift, by opening the space for participants to create the innovation processing in a 6-week period: from understanding how to place human beings at the centre of their solutions to a specific challenge (human-centred design); to prototyping, designing and communicating solutions, to presenting them and taking them forward based on an organization’s mission. C4SI is also interdisciplinary and gathers both technological, social and artistic components of innovation. If you’re just as excited about this as me, you can find more information here. At the same time, I am currently interning at CARE International, a humanitarian agency focused on emergency relief and long-term development projects. As an operations intern at the CARE International Emergency Group, I am involved in monitoring, processing, interpreting and presenting emergency response data as it is coming in from CARE’s country offices all over the world, to facilitate communication across sectors, countries and regions, and improve accountability. This has been an interesting process as I am getting an in-depth understanding of the challenges of describing emergencies – especially humanitarian ones – in mere numbers. The complexity of the data appeals to the complexity of the situations lived in settings with long-term crisis and conflicts such as South Sudan, Syria and Yemen. Additionally, this work has allowed me to explore the development-humanitarian nexus, as social and environmental fragility often facilitates the emergence of a crisis. In my free time, I am returning to playing music and integrating singing/playing songs into my professional/work environment in a way that unites people I know. 13. What do you want to be when you grow up? Future goals/challenges? I want to be someone that is grounded enough in order to be there for others. I want to be someone that has not lost sensitivity towards the world's problems, whilst being practical enough and contributing to solving them in some way. One of the challenges to this is a lack of self-confidence and a big fear of failure. 14. What fears are you still hoping to overcome? Definitely, again, the fear of failing to impact the world in a positive way, fear of being physically hurt, and the fear of not feeling whole alone. 15. Anything you'd do differently (if you had another go at life)? Not too much, but I would try to learn more languages as a child. 16. What inspires you? Seeing dreamers and doers, participating in their joy and creativity. Witnessing compassionate acts. 17. What are you hopeful about? I am hopeful that we are collectively learning from our mistakes, and going on a more positive, understanding path (for example, regarding climate change). I am hopeful that I will also do this personally, especially with my family. 18. What are some ingredients to a good life? A healthy environment/mind/body, and a heart watered with love. Also, being by the sea is always a good thing. 19. What are you reading now? (what books do you gift most and what are your favourite reads?) I am just starting to read "The God of Small Things", by Arundhati Roy. I mostly gift short-story books, mostly of authors whose books I have liked to read. My favourite reads are: The Earthsea Cycle Series by Ursula K. LeGuin, and "The Book of Embraces", by Eduardo Galeano. 20. Who is a “WOW Woman” in your life who inspires you (and why)? My mom, as she is a living example of a strong, intelligent and proactive woman, who always takes on life's challenges with trust and respect, whilst deepening her self-knowledge. 21. I am currently possibly developing an outlet to share my musical side, but for now, LinkedIn is the place where I share what I have been recently been up to, on the professional side of things.
