I know , ren has made SO MANY mistakes and in know yasu Is perfect but I believed that nana and ren were soulmates no matter what …happened . I so sad fo ren… i know.. its crazy, yasu and nana are so special but i still believed that nana x ren was more , no matter what.. till now 😮‍💨

I've been confused, and I think we have all been confused just like you with these occurences to Nana being in love with Yasu, I'm pretty sure Yazawa Ai made all these on purpose just to upset us T..T and as Ren and Nana are my favorite character and favorite couple in the serie, I can tell you I was really upset!

But I'm gonna answer your question, as a Nana&Ren fan : I think she really does love Ren, more than anybody. :-)

I can't help but have a lot in common with Nana, I wasn't abandoned by my mother but I felt quite lonely my whole life, not being able to connect to anyone... until I met that one man. It's another kind of love, I swear, to meet someone that heal you from your sadness, from your loneliness, that becomes a shelter, a light in the dark, the ONLY light. The person became a GOD for you, so you can imagine the devastation when you're left by that one person. And there come Yasu! He's sweet, he's nice, he's always available, always a good hear when you need him... I think Nana really wanted to fall in love with him, she knew it would be a healthiest relationship for her... but she did not. She loved him, but she was not in love with him (at the risk of being scolded by their shipers, I think it goes the same with Hachi x Nobu :p). She cannot love anyone else than Ren, and that's one of the reason why she's quite upset

Do you remember this? That one scene in which she realizes that Yasu will not be able to "save" her - from Ren!

Concerning the scene with Nobu and Shin, "think about the way Nana feels about him", we understand in the serie that Nana is a very possessive person, she wants the person she loves to belong to her, completely. I am a very possessive person too, and it's very complicated to see someone who's interested in you being interested in someone else, because you really feel abandoned. Even if you cannot give love to the person, you need the person to love you, only you. Another interesting cap :

I think That's exactly what she'd like! That yasu keeps on looking after her, without loving anyone else, even if she is unable to give him love (because she loves Ren more :p)

The last two things that I wanted to underline, are the fact that Nana is not that upset about Myu and Yasu relationship. She's a bit angry, but she was in love with Yasu it would be the end of the world for her.

+ I have also noticed, and I don't know if you will agree with me, that as long as the things go well with Ren, Nana doesn't really need Yasu, she runs to him when the things go wrong, doesn't she?

+If she was in love with Yasu, she would have dated him during the two years of breakup with Ren, right? :-)

But this is just my opinion you know, maybe I'm wrong , maybe she's in love with Yasu and the clues you listed are quite relevant too! But I hope my answer managed to make you believe in Nana and Ren for ever ♥

ok so i just finished rereading and actually finishing the infamous in the tokyorev fandom older wakui manga, sekisei inko and shit i have words.

ok so ending was so rushed, digi and ren's deaths were so fucking :((((( /neg like don't do them dirty like that. i feel like tsukuyo's power thing was so annoying and kinda useless since we didn't even get the time to see what it was entirely since she was already dyin but i kinda liked that reveal.

the reveal of seven being a bug was really good tho. memory was kind of a jumpscare but hey when isnt smth a jumpscare in wakui's works. i like the whole thing with peter and rabbit but again, i wish we got more backstory to that. and olga! love of my life i love her very much she is so<333333

but the hand over from og nana to seven was so fucking shitty its giving the ending of tokyo revengers like rushing any ending or like any scene in media in general is like one of the worst things you could do honestly. i'm kinda disappointed that wakui ended two mangas of his that had very much potential for a good ending rushed. like 😐

nana rewatch notes- episode 12

-this episode starts with hachi telling us that ever since she was a kid, all she wanted was to “become a beautiful bride”. there was nothing else that she wanted to be. this has to do with a “beautiful bride” symbolizing happiness/the ideal way to be happy and avoid loneliness. again i think hachi sees dependency on others as a way to avoid loneliness. as a result she rushes into relationships and mold herself into whatever need be to keep the relationship afloat. as we see with shoji, she then realizes she doesn’t end up feeling happy or fulfilled in the relationship.

-before this, hachi says “im straying from the subject, but please bear with me.” isn’t this a part of her narration to nana? who is hachi’s audience? WHAT IS THE SUBJECT? Most of hachi’s reflective narration is about her relationship with nana and/or what happened between them- so maybe thats why she thinks she’s straying from the subject, but that also means she intentionally included this bit--who does she want to know this? why??? so much to think about.

-i forgot how funny nana gets when she’s drunk lmao

-hachi’s style is constantly changing…gemini rising

-hachi is so sure that nana loved yasu and vice versa which...yes and no. while hachi isn’t WRONG, it’s also a lot more complicated than i think she originally perceives. her conclusions for why anyone ever does something burns down to “they must be in love”. granted, hachi is also missing a huge puzzle piece (ren)

- i also cant believe it took me so long to see how much hachi and nobu have in common the first time watching this. it’s painful to watch this time around.

-am i being mean to hachi? i always feel like im being mean to her lol. these are all reasons why i love her so much i promise. i think her flaws are portrayed and executed in both clever and unique ways.

-also really interesting that the first reason hachi thinks yasu is stoic around nana must be bc he has a girlfriend

-another thing worth pointing out is that while hachi’s assumptions are often treated silly+naive by the rest of the characters, she’s actually usually spot on abt others romantic feelings

-idk man…junko’s attitude considering the situation is super weird to me. and this line is just sad. hachi is just baggage that shoji has the burden handling.

-okay but what does shoji actually like about hachi? has he ever said?? no.

-hachi easily changes her look for jobs- she even manages her speech pattern- when i say gemini rising

-hmmm so hachi and nana definitely dont only end up with happy memories. it’s fair to assume that hachi meant that nana never hurt her (which isn’t true either). hachi probably means that she doesn’t blame nana for anything that happened between them. there’s of course A LOT to say about hachi’s constant comparison between nana and romantic partners on top of hachi always saying how much easier being with nana was, even though her relationship with nana was no less complicated. i think it felt less complicated to hachi bc she was in love with nana. idk i just think hachi is showing some lesbian behavior.

-also hachi has a boyfriend as she’s thinking this lol.

Hey! How have you been? Been thinking a lot about death and grief lately cause someon close to me is sick so I’m preparing myself mentally to if they pass away. Therefore I’ve been reading nana again to help get deal with it.

Was wondering if you think that in the future if Nana will find love again. From what we’ve seen it seems like she’s still grieving. If Ai Yazawa was to finish the manga, do you think she would let Nana move on with her life, perhaps find a man in England and live a quiet life?

Hi Anon, I am quite tired and cannot manage to find some rest anywhere I go, it’s kind of frustrating! How are you at the moment? I am so sorry about your relative being sick, it’s always hard to see someone leaves but if they suffer, I guess it would be selfish from us to want them to stay and suffer isn’t it? It’s the only way I have found to calm down when I see a relative about to pass away: I hope it feels better on the other side... 

oh god such a question! I am quite selfish right? I don’t want Nana to love anybody other than Ren. I am the saddest, and at the same time the happiest when I see her, lonely in England. Saddest because she did not deserve all the misfortunes she had to go through, at the same time I am happy (maybe not happy, but satisfied,  reassured) that she keeps on nurturing Ren’s memory, and her love to him. It’s quite unhealthy for her, as, as you said rightly, she has to move on if she wants to keep living - you can’t spend the rest of your life living in a lost past... 

Will she find another love? I don’t know... In my opinion, in order to find somebody else then she will need a real wake-up-call, a trigger. She has been living like this for so many years! What could be that wake-up-call? Maybe the meeting with Hachi, or with Satsuki (her daughter?!), her old past friends. Anyway, if she ever comes to live with another man than Ren, she will never love him more than she loved Ren. Never. Surely it would be love! But not that kind of love.

this is SO MESSY imagine having a pregnancy scare where it's not just your boyfriend and your shit ex fighting over custody (partially as a way to manipulate you into staying. in takumi's case at least) it's also your Girl Best Friend fighting over the father signature line on the birth certificate. ALSO as a way to manipulate you into staying. haha.

nana reread: completely forgot how quickly both nanas get really possessive and jealous over each other. i remembered how quickly they started calling each other soulmates or the loves of their lives but watching them reconcile all of that with "hahahaha we're just roommates though :|" is soo messy

Hi! When I started to watch Nana, your blog was the first I found with analysis of the caracters and this helped me a lot to understand them better! So, I'd like to know what is your opinion in the end pairs (if the story ever end). I'd like to the Nana's to end "alone" and "together", like they dont need to be a official couple, but at least live together and taking care of the children. Abt reira idk i'd like takumi to become a better person an date her but also grown up shin would be nice

Aw, I’m glad I was able to enhance your own understanding of the characters!

Unfortunately, I don’t think I can accurately guess what the ending will be... mostly because I’m pretty sure Yazawa doesn’t know. Or at least didn’t, last we left off in the manga. And I’m pretty much very sure that the ending will be very different from my ideal ending for the better and worse.

In the fanbook, Yazawa said in the interview that she’d planned what happened in Hachi (and Nana?’s) monologues but it was up to the characters to react to those things organically, in the manga.  So what I extrapolate from that is that Yazawa knows the big bullet points of what will happen in the series (like Hachi’s pregnancy & getting back with Takumi and Ren’s death, as well as I do believe she has very likely had the circumstances Nana goes missing planned from early on as well) but left it up to the characters to react to those large events (Nana’s feeling betrayed by Hachi’s pregnancy, Nana losing her voice after Ren’s death, etc). So honestly it’s hard to guess when I don’t even think the author knows (lol).  I really do think that Yazawa knows how Hachi and Nana will reunite in the future but not what happens after. I think those moments will be up to our heroines to decide for themselves. Because the characters in this series really do feel like they make their decisions in such a realistic way while being such a beautifully constructed narrative.

Just speaking from what I think would be the most natural end pairings from what we know... Hm...

I do agree with you that Nana & Hachi living together and Hachi not being with Nobu or Takumi being my ideal ending, regardless if Nana and Hachi are platonic is 100% good with me.  Tbh, I think (IN MY OPINION) that Hachi/Nobu is less likely to happen than Hachi/Takumi as endgame. It’s just my current feeling of the series where it left off. As I said, ideal would be neither of them and I honestly do think that it’s possible too.

I think Nana ending up with no one romantically is likely too, though I can imagine an ending with her and Yasu together too.

I think the Reira ships are harder for me to imagine!! I really think it’ll be up to Shin to decide and he’s done so much growing up in the timeskip it’s hard to say since we haven’t seen much on future!Shin’s feelings for Reira. But I can see Reira ending up with either dude in the end.... But my ideal end would also be neither for both (lol).  That’s not possible though! This is shojo/josei!! Not all ships can sink... can they?? That’d be wild though if the only couple that stayed together to the end is Jun and Kyosuke lololol.

In the end, it’s been 10 years since NANA has been on hiatus... If I let myself build up too much expectation for my ideal ending, I’m scared that no matter what Yazawa might do with the ending would disappoint me so I’m trying very hard not to build my expectations too much. I just gotta wait patiently and trust that Yazawa will complete the story one day and the ending that she writes will be the ending that was meant to be and it’ll be just the way it had to end even if it wasn’t the way I wanted it to go. Including all the ships that’ll sail that I’m not into.

Nana and Ren were in love w each other. Hachi and Nobu also fell in love w each other. Also pretty sure Nana and Hachi were in love w each other too. They talk abt each other in similiar context to their significant others. Whether or not it's in a romantic way doesn't matter, I don't think. I really feel their love for each other is just as intense. It has been, from the begining, the main love story of Nana. That trips me up everytime I think abt it.
