I’ve written something like this before, but I wanted to write it again since I’m rewatching RDR1 on YouTube. The Mexico arc in the game is one of my favorite depictions of a political struggle, mainly because it doesn’t shy away from how complicated politics can be. I feel like a great deal of fiction tends to go for a more black-and-white, hero against the villain narrative. The empire is bad, the rebels are good, and so on. But RDR1 really went into depth on how politics can be so confusing and complicated in real life.
The game has a basic set-up: the government led by Colonel Allende is terrorizing the people, leading to a rebellion led by Abraham Reyes. Allende spreads propaganda about how evil Reyes is but the people believe that Reyes is their savior. At this point, the game could’ve just done the simple route of making Reyes the clear-cut good guy and Allende the clear-cut bad guy. Instead, we’re forced to really ponder which side is worth supporting.
Obviously, Allende is evil and does need to be taken down. But Reyes is revealed to be just as bad as him. For example, he is casually revealed to be bigoted towards Chinese immigrants. Luisa says that Allende abuses women, but Reyes also sees women as disposable and would probably continue Allende’s abusive practices if he was in power.
But the biggest point that I give Rockstar credit for is that they created bad guys who had a legitimately good point about the rebels who we’re supposed to root for. Although it’s easy to sympathize with the rebels wanting to take the government down, the government is justified in claiming the rebels were brainwashed into supporting an evil man. From the moment John Marston met Abraham Reyes, he immediately realized that Reyes was exactly how Allende and De Santa described him as. He’s ignorant, moronic, power-hungry, and he views himself as being higher than the peasants despite presenting himself as a champion of the people. But no one else picked up on this! So, you really can’t argue against De Santa and Allende on this, especially since Reyes ends up becoming a tyrant in the future.
In going through this storyline again, I’ve also developed a new perspective on Luisa Fortuna. She was the one character who legitimately cared for the rights of the Mexican people and was fighting to end tyranny. But knowing how obviously terrible Abraham Reyes is as a character (he even gets Luisa’s name wrong right in front of her), it’s hard not to see Luisa as anything but an incredibly naive woman who got manipulated by an idiot. She isn’t really that much different from how devoted De Santa was to Allende’s regime. They were both passionate to their respective causes, but their passion blinded them to how awful their leaders were.
And then to have the storyline end with the message that the cycle of oppression will repeat but with Abraham Reyes in charge? Incredibly dark, but fitting for the story.
Go play RDR1 if you haven’t done so already. This was only one act out of a total of three acts in the story. And all the acts are strongly written in their own way.

The wait is over! I've posted the first 3 chapters of Washed Up!
“A tragic turn of events at this year’s International Surf Championships when twenty-six year old Mexican champion, Javier Escuella, was victim to a great white shark attack.”
When rookie surfer, John Marston, asks ex-champion, Javier Escuella, to coach him, the two discover that they may have bitten off more than they can chew. When wanting to put his replacement, Abraham Reyes, in his place, Javier uncovers a much darker truth hidden beneath the surface of Reyes's "charming" persona.
Romance, action, heartbreak, old friends, new lovers. What more could you ask for?
If you enjoyed Welcome to Escuella's, I can guarantee you'll love Washed Up even more.

History repeats itself
The links between Dutch Van Der Linde and Abraham Reyes are astounding and I think they give a look into what would have happened had Dutch gotten what he wanted.
Dutch is an outlaw, a "revolutionary", he has ideals and he created the gang to achieve them. He robbed the rich and gave to the poor, he wanted to create an equal and free world for all. It is hinted that he came from a well off background, he ran away from home not because his mother was abusive but simply because she didn't let him do mischeif, and he fell into this role as a leader for the misfortunate who, unlike him, had not chosen that life.
Abraham Reyes is a revolutionary. He sees the inequality in Mexico and creates and army to help him take down the president who is ruling in tyrany. He leads wars and fights injustice. But it is confirmed that he grew up rich in a Swiss boarding school which he got expelled from because he fucked a maid.
Dutch has Molly, a young pretty girl whom he persuades into running off with him but he cares little for her, discarding her with ease and giving little fuck when she dies.
Reyes has Luisa, who is his fiance, but he doesn't even know her name, he fucks around with any woman he can get close to and just says "oh yes, very brave, she will be missed. Who was she again?" [..] "Oh yes, of course, she will have a day named after her! Laura's day!" when she dies.
They have so many similarites other than that, such as them being very charismatic, very good at manipulating and acting. Dutch lost himself/showed his real self in the end, Reyes got what he wanted, he won the war, but then showed his real self too, he didn't change anything, he was just wanted to benefit from the system, not tear it down.
I think that is something similar to what would have happened if Dutch had achieved his goal. If he somehow changed something or got the group away, he would just continue, he wouldn't be happy with what he had, he would want more. He would be the kind of leader who would create problems for himself to solve just to look better, even if meant someone getting hurt. His goal isn't wealth in money, but wealth in blood lusty people, he thrives in creating chaos wrapped beautifully into a cloth of ideals of soften the edges. He wouldn't settle, never, he might say he wanted but he wouldn't be able to. Reyes fought a war, had people die for him, because he said he would tear down the system, he didn't, he just wanted to benefit from it.
I also think John realised this, telling Reyes "if you win power, remember why you wanted it."

You're so right tho! All of this Javier Escuella talk in rdr1 only for him to get like... 3 minutes of screen time??
My least favorite was and always will be Abraham. Won't forget that ONE scene if yk what I mean
(Happy new years to you tew 🥺💗)
If I'm being honest..I also love Reyes😭 FORGIVE ME
Omg tho are you talking about that freaky ahh scene I played whilst my FATHER sat behind me on the sofa watching 😧. Oh boy is that a hoot of a memory! Hot dawg! 🙁.
But I think he was quite entertaining and to me personally he had the funniest one liners...like who is this guy bro go home😭🙏 tho dw boo I DEFO understand the hate after him lock this guy up!!!! I'll swallow the key☝️
But with Escuella my gosh YOURE SO RIGHT UGH. My friend got me to play RDR ages back, (I only played so I'd have something to talk about with her lol but when I did she'd just left her phase 💀) anywho she kept hyping up and talking about Javier as one of her top characters- (she'd played rdr2 first and was a giant Jovier shipper) so literally i was expecting such a giant part when we met him!!!! And all the talk of him throughout rdr I was like omg this shi gonna be HUGE dang I'm excited
NOPE!!!!! Like 5 lines😭🙏. I loved each of his 23 seconds of screen time but I think I'd sacrifice my little brother for Chelonia or whatever for more screen time of him and those BODACIOUS lore drops my goodness.
(And thank you my friend👐👐❤❤😚😚)

Abraham Reyes becoming a dictator is very foreshadowed during the whole Nuevo Paraíso arc:
-During John's stint as an errand boy for the Mexican Army, Reyes treated John as if he was his best friend even after John killed a lot of his men.
-Takes credit for his escape from El Presidio, claiming that he killed a thousand men by himself with his bare hands, even though he was only tied up and John did all the grunt work.
-When Luisa goes to thank John, he grabs Luisa in a very possessive manner, seeing her only as property.
-Relating to the third one, Reyes not only cheats on Luisa, but also offered her as a whore to John.
-Refers to his followers as "energy" to him and holds the poor in contempt, openly admitting that he sees the peasants as morons.
-Doesn't remember Luisa's name, calling her Laura.

Slytherins 🐍
all named and confirmed Slytherins in Hogwarts Legacy 📜
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ominis Gaunt & Sebastian Sallow
Salazar Slytherin - Anne Sallow
Headmaster Phineas Nigellus Black
Nerida Roberts - Imelda Reyes - The Bloody Baron
Professor Abraham Ronen
Grace Pinch-Smedley - Violet McDowell
Professor Aesop Sharp
Former Professor Charles Rookwood - Former Professor San Bakar
All Slytherins in Hogwarts Legacy, to the best of my knowledge and ability (but let me know if I missed anyone). I tried to make everyone up there look as good as possible, although poor Anne and her sunken cheeks broke my heart and yes, Sebastian and Ominis get to share a pic 💚

Luisa fucking risked her life for Abraham. She died trying to fucking save him and he couldn't even do her the honor of remembering her name. Luisa fucking died for that man because she loved him so much and he didn't even have an ounce of care for her. Abraham literally thanked JOHN before he thanked Luisa. Mexico's arc ending is so fucking sad because Reyes is going to turn the country to shit yet a rich man like him will be remembered as the hero and a revolutionary. Meanwhile Luisa, a poor girl who actually gave a shit about the cause and didn't just want power and actually LED John to DeSanta, will be remembered as a nobody.
So fucking cruel...
