collaboration spotlight — Altar Boyz cast reunion fundraiser

When quarantine shut down the entertainment industry indefinitely, a lot of talented people found themselves with a lot of unexpected free time and a lot of fear for the future. Many of them turned to their communities to both seek and provide support. To that end, more than 30 previous cast members from the Off-Broadway and touring casts of Altar Boyz reunited to raise money for The Actors Fund.

The world needed some hope in the face of a sudden ending. Luckily, the big finale is the most hopeful song in the show. Expanding the arrangement from just five voices to nearly three dozen gives it an even more lush and powerful sound.

Trivia:

The show debuted with preview performances during the New York Musical Theatre Festival in September 2004. The cast included Cheyenne Jackson as Matthew, Tyler Maynard as Mark, Andy Karl as Luke, Ryan Duncan as Juan, and David Josefsberg as Abraham.

Scott Porter took over the role of Matthew for the Off-Broadway production in March 2005, alongside the rest of the continuing cast. He ended his run in the show the following February to begin filming on the "Friday Night Lights" television series.

Scott and Matthew "Bucky" Buckner had met when they were both performing at the theme parks in Orlando. After Scott retired from his a cappella group 4:2:Five to take a job at Tokyo Disney in 2003, they recruited Bucky as their new member.

Bucky stepped into Matthew's shoes for the first national tour in October 2006, after he left 4:2:Five. When the tour finished in May 2007, he then joined the New York cast for the summer before passing the torch to Chad Doreck.

Oddly, both Scott and Bucky have Matthew as their actual first names, but Scott goes by his middle name, and Bucky also answers to a shortened version of his surname.

So You Think You Can Dance alumnus Neil Haskell played Luke from March 2008 to March 2009. He was then in several other shows before joining the ensemble cast of Hamilton when it moved to Broadway in the summer of 2015.

The Off-Broadway production of Altar Boyz closed in January 2010, having won several awards.

In addition to the initial music video, producer Ken Davenport also hosted an hour-long livestreamed reunion hangout with the original Off-Broadway cast and crew members a week later. They reminisced about the origins of the show and their favorite memories from bringing it to life.

To express their gratitude to all the donors throughout the week, a few of the former cast members recorded another song written by the show's composer.

Part 1:

Ranka: Rachi Shinji-san ・Norizuki Kouhei-san First of all, for Norizuki-san, like with various other comments, I was really looking forward to his lines overflowing with very Haruhi papa service. I went to see a certain stage of his last year, and to think that this beautiful person with a flexible, beautiful voice would be Ranka! Was what I came to expect, but I was sorry and worried to hear that he had to withdraw for the sake of his medical treatment.

I hope you rest well and get better. I��m looking forward to seeing your wonderful plays, singing voice, and dancing on stage again.

Part 3:

And Rachi-san… Beautiful, fun, and with a singing voice that was so splendid, it pierced through my heart, Rachi-san’s Ranka was really too great!! When I first heard Rachi-san’s name as the new Ranka, I was unable to move from the shock. It was like, “What…Rachi-san?! Is it true? He’s really appearing?!”

Part 1:

Ah, I like musicals in the first place, but there’s this stage that I like above all called ALTAR BOYZ. I’ve been watching it since the premier of the Japanese adaptation in 2009… Rachi-san from Team Legend was a first generation member… How many times have I gone to Shinjuku FACE, why won’t they turn this into a DVD like I’ve been longing for!

Part 2:

Norizuki-san was also an Altar cast, and he played my absolute favorite role. Last year, I was really happy that I thought I would get to watch Altar Boyz with Norizuki-san and Rachi-san on the same stage, but there was no such miracle!!

Part 3:

Because of the current events, I haven’t been able to greet the cast and staff individually. But that might be for the best, because if I talked to them separately, I might have seemed too suspicious…

Norizuki-san, Rachi-san, thank you so much~~!! Please excuse me for the sweltering talk!

Notes: In the Japanese adaptation for Altar Boyz, Norizuki Kouhei played Mark in Team Red in 2014, then Team Gold in 2017 to 2021. Rachi Shinji played Abraham in Team Legend in 2009 to 2017, then Matthew in Team Spark from 2019 to 2021. Honestly, I was also hoping that they would perform together, but I think the combination of Oyama!Matthew and Nori!Mark is just too good to separate for now lol but maybe that’s just me. I do also wish they’d record it, but I doubt it for an off Broadway show...

Anyway, I just wanted to share this because she expressed some of my feelings over Nori and Rachi. And Hatori-sensei being a fellow musical fan, and of Altar Boyz too...and Mark being her favorite? SAME SENSEI. I’m sure she already imagined Nori as Ranka based on his portrayal of Mark.

I know Rachi also replied and thanked her for compliments. As a fellow fan, I hope she can actually talk to both Rachi and Nori properly hahaha

Happy Super Bowl Sunday! Here are Altar Boyz headcanons! (This is pre canon for consistency. So Juan doesn’t know where his parents are, mark isn’t out, and Luke just left the rehabilitation center. Also no particular Super Bowl)

It was Matthew’s house

They did a double feature with the puppy bowl

They all prefer the puppy bowl

Matthew would pray during commercial breaks

Luke cannot play sports but he understands how they work and will always yell at the tv screen

Juan would reluctantly agree with Luke and say exactly what he just said but in Spanish

And then Luke is like “Oui, Juan, you GET it”

Matthew’s favorite Super Bowl food is nachos, Luke’s is wings, Juan’s is nachos, and Abraham’s is mozzarella sticks

Mark, being the vegan that he is, brought fruit

Abraham was trying to connect football with god the entire time

He wrote a song about how the football players prayed and that’s why they won as a joke, but the others LOVED it

It was quickly put on their set list

Mark confused football with basketball and thought they were going to go all high school musical

He was upset until he realized that it was just like glee

Matthew isn’t rooting for a team because he’s like “God loves both teams equally”

Matthew is also ridiculously excited about the commercials. Like REALLY excited.

Juan would love to do the halftime show one day. Mark, on the other hand? Absolutely not.

Abraham is concerned that the players are too cold

Matthew gets very worried every time another player is tackled

Abraham brought so much apple cider to the function

Juan keeps trying to search for his parents in the stadium to no avail

Mark had a huge crush on one of the players but not even the quarterback like some random guy

They would bring the soul sensor to see if it works on people on tv

An Altar Boyz AU where they do Jersey Boys is not a want, it's a need. Mark playing Frankie Valli and getting to do the high falsetto stuff that people bullied him about, and being praised for it. Abraham as Bob Gaudio, playing Cry For Me like he never played before. Juan as Tommy Devito, being absolutely shocked that he got it because he assumed that it would go to Matthew, and having a blast. Luke as Nick Massi, getting to exercize his own range, both as an actor and a singer. Matthew, understudying all four seasons and doing the Gyp DeCarlo track, just hyping the gang up.

Don’t Cry And Run Away

Sequel to Everybody Fits, right? And Good God!

It’s been a month since Mark’s conversation with Abraham and Luke. They’ve been talking for a long time, together, and Mark wanted to add Juan back in.

Mark: How do you guys think Juan is doing?

Luke: He still exists

Mark: You forgot he existed?

Luke: Yeah

Abraham: I mean, we haven’t seen him in a while. Does anyone still have his number?

Mark: I think he blocked me after last night.

Luke: I might

Abraham: I’ll go to your house in an hour to check. You available?

Luke: I might be

Abraham: We’ll add him to the chat.

Mark: Actually, can we make a second chat with him in it instead?

Abraham: Why do you ask?

Mark: Well, I’m not out to him yet. I’m only out to the people in this chat.

Abraham: Oh, yeah! Absolutely!

Mark: Really appreciate it.

Abraham: No worries :)

Mark has been so thankful about how nice Abraham and Luke were being about him being gay. Abraham accepted him with no questions asked immediatley, and Luke made sure Mark always knew his friendship with him wouldn’t change. Mark desperately hoped Juan would react the same way, but it wasn’t likely.

Mark just wanted to say sorry to him. Just to say a billion sorrys.

Juan: Who is this?

Mark: This is Mark.

Juan: Fun! But, I am considering just going back to Ohio. Have a break. Meet a girl.

Abraham: THE EMOJI... WHAT ARE YOU SUGGESTING?

Juan: Nothing. Just answer the question.

Luke: Wait

Luke: Nevermind

Mark isn’t going to answer this. That’s a good idea!

Juan: Mark, have you?

Mark: DO ANY OF YOU HAVE SPANISH HOMEWORK?

Abraham: Mark.

Abraham: We’re not in school anymore.

Abraham: When we were, you took French.

Luke: I was in your class.

Wow, Mark. Great way to be subtle.

Abraham: Hey, you don’t have to lie.

Abraham: Juan would understand.

Abraham: I’m not going to pressure you to come out or anything like that, but you don’t have to pretend to like girls.

Mark inhaled and went back to the chat, after reading Abraham’s messages.

[Juan changed the name of the chat to “Simping for Jesus”]

Abraham: Can’t relate.

Juan: You know it’s true.

Luke: This is great

Mark: No, it’s not.

Luke: Come on Mark we all know you Simp for Jesus

Mark: Fair, but no.

Juan: I’m not letting any of you change it.

Abraham: I know better not to try.

Juan: FaceTime call?

Mark: Oh. Sure.

About five seconds later, Mark’s phone was ringing. He touched the green circle to answer it, and it was so pleasing to see Juan’s face again.

Juan must have felt the same way, because his face lit up like a Christmas tree. “Mark!”

“Juan! If I could hug you, I totally would!”

Mark and Juan seem to be enemies sometimes, and best friends other times. This time, they’re best friends. And that makes Mark so happy.

Abraham joins the call, him equally as happy to see Juan again, even if only virtually.

“Hey, I don’t think Luke knows how to get in here. I’ll be right back to get him in.”

As soon as he was here, Abraham was gone.

“So, what have you been doing recently?” Mark asked.

“Going on tour! It’s fun! Not as fun as performing with you.”

They’ll never perform together again. Or, not all together.

Matthew was still gone. Mark still has him as his lockscreen.

“Okay, Luke can’t get in. I’ll just text him to tell him what’s going on.” Abraham reentered the call.

Luke: Hey dudes sorry I cant join

Juan: No worries.

“So, how has everything been with you, Abraham?”

“I signed a solo deal.” He winked.

“What is it? You still haven’t told me.” Mark pouted.

“Can’t say. Contract.”

“Right.”

Things started to become awkward, and Mark wanted to break the silence.

“Juan?”

“Yeah?”

“I’m gay.”

That was NOT the best way to break the silence.

Juan’s grin became a wide smile, which became a giggle, which became Juan hysterically laughing.

“Oh. What?”

[Chat: Mark and Abraham]

Abraham: You okay?

Mark: I think.

After Juan calmed down, he said “I already knew.”

“Juan!” Abraham rolled his eyes. “No, Mark. It’s fine.”

“You did too!” Juan added.

Mark could not believe it. He could not believe.

Why does Mark care? Luke might not have known. Abraham obviously didn’t care. But Juan-

“Hey! Don’t cry and run away!” Juan could sense Mark was getting teary. “If it helps, that never changed the way I think of you. It’s just who you are. You’re gay, Mark, but you’re also really cool. You’re one of my closest friends. You helped me with so many things. When my parents died after the concert, you went up to me and told me it was okay. Long story short, I wouldn’t be who I am without you. Do you think being gay would change that?”

“Maybe.” Mark was crying, but this time of happy tears. “I’m so sorry.”

“Mark, you need to stop apologizing to people every time you come out. It’s fine.” Abraham told him.

Juan: I’m going to be filthy rich. Matthew is going to have to pay me now. I won the bet.

Mark: What bet?

Juan: WAIT I MEANT TO SEND THAT JUST TO ABRAHAM.

“Mark hasn’t told Matthew yet.” Abraham responded.

“You guys had BETS about my sexuality?”

“Only one.”

“JUAN.”

“Before you go and make that face-“

Juan was messed up sometimes, but he was Mark’s friend. Mark would not trade him for the world.
