Did you bring a sword?

The Zavazni pride themselves on their swordsmanship. If one of their Privateer ships pulls you over, you can duel them: Win and they’ll fuck off, nice and peaceful.

Lose and… well things might go the other way. Slavery or death for the challenger for sure.

Almost nobody duels the Zavazni. Nobody else has dropped all their points into weebing that hard about swords.

So the Freighter Mok Sipok Vuun Abta (Lit: Slow but Safe hands for Carrying) got nabbed by the Privateer ship ‘Elegant blade for which no foe may stand against’. The captain just sighed and started filling out the insurance forms, and had the Bankruptcy declaration cued up for after that.

It was wholly a surprise then, that the Cook decided to challenge the Zavazni’s Blademaster.

The cook was human, of course. She was called Sue - Probably still is.

The Blademaster - One Truun Var Odakan (Familial name Ovtin) accepted on the spot, pulled out a metre of gleaming silvered duelling sword, flourished and spun the damn thing faster than a hummingbird’s wing: Y’know, just to make a point.

Sue got a crappy spare one of the Zavazni handed to her. She waggled it, adjusted her grip, almost dropped it… Which provoked hilarity from the Privateers.

The Captain was hoping that they’d find this all funny enough not to be vindictive after they sliced Sue up. Which at this point was entirely out of his hands.

Sue did a few swishes with the blade and started to swing it, the point wobbling until she got the hang of it and then…

… and then it was moving faster, and faster as she got the measure of it, until it moved like a curtain of quicksilver. Like it was the petals of a flower picked out in the barely visible reflection of metal moving so fast it became ethereal. The tip moved so fast it sung. The damn thing looked like it was alive.

Sue moves in a way that the Captain had never seen, twisting, spinning, sliding, and weaving.

Ovtin was immediately wrong-footed, but then Sue stopped, the subliminal whine of the blade shocking in its sudden absence.

“OK big boy, let’s dance.” she said — And Ovtin, barely pausing, swept in with the terrible grace the Zavazni are known for.

Sue handed him his ass.

She wasn’t ever where he thought, she never stepped where he predicted. She moved like water around his silver blade, and she barely even took time to slap his sword out the way.

Ovtin started to slow, frustrated swings and lunges tiring him out, and Sue?

She relaxed into it. She looked loose and lazy.

The scalpel sharp point of the privateers sword whipping past her, as she bent like a willow, reaching up and just slapping the flat of Ovtin’s blade with her hand now and again.

And then when he was panting and livid, she took him apart: A flick of her sword tip here, a sweep there that dragged the cutting edge through cloth and skin: Her sword switching hands…

Some times even pointing backwards as she spun and ducked, the edge like a scythe, making him stumble out the way. And then as Ovtin staggered she spun inside his defence, elbowed him in the side, slid her hand up his arm and yanked his sword out of his hand.

Sue ducked down and whipped the tips across Ovtin’s thighs, backed up, dropped the tips, rolled her shoulders and started whirling both swords — Her shirt soaked, her hair matted and pure fury in her eyes.

The Captian nearly shit himself when he realised this creature of pure avatistic vengeance had been making his pancakes and hot tuvi of a morning.

Ovtin just couldn’t wrap his mind around what was happening. He could have surrendered, but he couldn’t conceptually accept it and kept lunging in to try to get his sword back.

Which was like reaching into a blender.

And when he finally died, Sue cried for him and told the Privateers to fuck off: And they did. They actually did.

She kept both swords. Mounted the old one over the kitchen hatch.

It took the Captain almost the entire rest of the trip to ask two questions

“Would you have challenged the Blade Master if we hadn’t been carrying aide supplies?”

…and:

“How? How could you possibly have done this?”

Unfortunately the answer to the second part, devoid of cultural context, meant nothing to him, but he wrote it in the log anyway:

“Cargo saved due to the actions of Sue Marrincourt, cook & ‘Beat Sabre Champion’.”

That DEFINITELY points towards a sub 2.50 Best marathon session: 4*4k coming down to 3.36/8's solo. Best overall session: Nice to see the Mona sessions getting quicker - but getting back to doing some hill sessions was good, plus the ability to just "bank" sessions was a very welcome addition to the arsenal. Best race: Southern 6 stage was decent but first SL XC was a much better run out. Vets AC 10k was the only disappointing one. So....lets get out there and do this.

Travel agents recorded the biggest rise in pay last year, up 21% in a year, official data shows, with public relations directors and publicans next on the list.

Sports coaches saw the largest fall and, overall, UK workers saw earnings fail to keep pace with rising prices.

The average full-time worker’s annual wage was nearly £35,000 in April 2023, a rise of 5.8% on the previous year.

But the cost of living grew faster than wages over the same period.

That ate into workers’ spending power.

Rebound from Covid

Jobs, like travel agents and publicans, fared better than average, but that was likely to be part of a rebound after these roles were hit hard during Covid.

Their typical annual earnings were also still below the national average of all occupations.

Sean Tipton, from the travel agents trade body ABTA, said: “During the pandemic, the travel industry was by far the worst affected. Business fell through the floor. Over 100,000 people left the travel sector.”

When demand from holidaymakers surged back, there was a shortage of workers in the industry, so companies offered higher wages, he said. Higher numbers of bookings meant they had the funds to increase pay.

BBC News analysed the latest earnings figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to see which professions have managed to beat rising inflation rates, and which have not.

Travel agents had the biggest pay rises, with the average wage going up by more than a fifth to around £29,600, but still below the national average of £35,000.

Public relations directors, publicans and directors have had pay bumps of more than 15% as well.

On the other hand, some jobs fared worse. Delivery operatives, interior designers and tax agents have had substantial pay cuts, even before accounting for inflation.

What is the minimum wage and how much is it?

While these figures are less timely than the most up-to-date pay figures released by the ONS, they provide a more granular view of the labour market.

The average full-time worker in the UK was earning £34,963 in the year to March 2023, about £1,900 or 5.8% more than the previous year. The increase in hourly wages was the biggest since comparable records began in 1997 – but unlikely to be higher than during some earlier periods during, for example, the 1970s.

But the inflation figure, or the rate at which the cost of goods and services has increased, for the year April to April, was even higher at 7.8%.

This means that in real terms, wages fell by 1.9% for full-time workers, a sign of the continued cost of living squeeze.

These numbers will not reflect the easing of inflation and further wage rises since April, for which detailed data is not yet available. According to more recent figures from the ONS, pay has already overtaken inflation in June to August 2023.

The gender pay gap, which charts the hourly earnings of men and women, has barely changed in all major sectors between 2022 and 2023, although it has improved over time.

Over the last decade, the gender pay gap has fallen by about a quarter, reaching 7.7% for full-time workers by April 2023. However, it remains disproportionately high for workers aged 40 or over at 10.3%.

Wednesday’s figures also reveal that the proportion of low-wage earners, that is, people who earn below two-thirds of the average hourly earnings, is the lowest since comparable records began in 1997.

Choose the right time – Scheduling a talk in advance will allow you and your boss time to prepare, and means you’re more likely to have a productive conversation

Bring evidence – have a list of what you’ve achieved at work and how you’ve developed yourself

Be confident – Know your worth and don’t be shy about speaking up

Have a figure in mind – look at job adverts online to see the salaries for comparable jobs

Don’t give up – keep talking to your employer if it doesn’t work this time and if you can’t get what you want be prepared to look elsewhere

The cost-of-living crisis in the UK has made a substantial amount of people make a lot of adjustments to their wallets, including keeping a tighter rein on their budgets.

ONs increased their data collection by using a larger pool of data to assess the various actions people are making to combat the cost-of-living challenge in more depth between 30th March to 19th June 2022.

The main lifestyle changes those who took part in the research reported had been cutting back on non-essentials (57%, around 26 million people), reducing their gas and electricity outgoings (51%, about 24 million people), decreasing journeys made by a vehicle which were not essential (42%, roughly 19 million people).

The cost of living has also impacted the ability to purchase ski holidays as, according to new research, 5 in 10 British package holiday skiers have decided to adjust their winter season trip in 2022. Snow sports can be costly; with lift passes, equipment, rentals, transport, lessons and food, the costs quickly mount up.

Research conducted by Club Med, which provides all-inclusive holiday packages, also revealed that 45 per cent of regular skiers are thinking of altering their winter sports plans.

The study had 2000 British participants and was undertaken during a time when energy prices and severe inflation were straining people’s ability to travel for winter sports.

Although there is much more normality this year compared to previous seasons disrupted by the pandemic, the cost-of-living calamity means that people are facing much more of a burden on their financial pockets.

Ski trips are expected to increase in price as some energy-concentrated resorts boost costs to manage the rocketing electricity and gas costs. Even though prices are expected to rise, some ski fanatics seek more budget-friendly skiing holiday options without causing severe ruin to their finances. According to Club Med research, 53% of participants are contemplating more cost-effective options. On the other hand, others are putting their skiing boots aside for now.

Meanwhile, according to research conducted by ABTA, regarding general holiday making, just 4% of people who ventured on holiday this year have decided not to make another trip next year because of financial constraints, and 61% of respondents will go on a holiday abroad. However, just 35% will adjust their spending habits and opt for less expensive trips.

ABTA undertook the study in late August before Former Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng’s mini-budget affected the pound and increased the prospect of further increased interest rates, elevated mortgage expenses and diminishing disposable salaries.

ABTA Holiday Habits report noted an increase in people booking holidays through agents or travel experts in 2022 compared to 2019, as many had holidays cancelled during the pandemic. This booking method was primarily used by families, more than half of whom had young children.

Put simply, the fallen value of the pound means your money won’t stretch as far as before on things like meals out and accommodation.

Brits holidaying in America will be particularly affected. The pound slumped to a 37-year low $1.0327 against the dollar on Monday after Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng’s slew of tax cuts rattled investors. It has since rebounded a little bit to around $1.06 as of Wednesday morning.

Practically speaking, tourists are now facing an exchange rate of roughly £1 = $1, with a currency worth around 20 per cent less than it was last October.

And it’s not just people heading State-side who will see their spending power reduced. A number of other countries, including winter favourite Barbados and football World Cup Host Qatar, also anchor their currencies to the dollar.

But people are reluctant to give up their holiday plans just because the pound’s been on some travels of its own.

An ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) spokesperson tells Euronews Travel, “There is still considerable pent up demand for overseas travel after over two years of severe travel restrictions. Over the years, customers have repeatedly told us that holidays are one of the last things they will cut back on when looking to ease financial pressures on hard pressed budgets.”

How are airlines impacted by the low pound?

A plummeting pound doesn’t just make destinations more expensive, it could mean a steeper plane ticket too.

That’s because aviation fuel and aircraft leases are generally priced in US dollars, so airlines outside the US have to pay more to refuel when their home currency falls.

It could be a while before airlines need to pass their higher costs onto passengers, however. EasyJet CEO Johan Lundgren told the BBC that the budget airline is in a good position because it had “hedged”, or bought some fuel in advance at a set rate.

Meanwhile Virgin Atlantic boss Shai Weiss has urged PM Truss to take “difficult decisions in order to reverse the devaluation of the pound.”

The chief executive said Virgin could also weather the financial storm, having taken precautions against a devalued pound and rising fuel prices.

But, he added, “We are concerned, like everyone else in the country, about the economic environment in which we are operating right now,” Travel Weekly reports.

“The weakness of the pound is hurting the economy and it’s hurting consumers and it’s fuelling the inflationary vicious cycle we are in.”

Where are the cheapest places for Brits to travel on the weak pound?

Despite the bleak economic outlook for Britain, it’s still possible to shop around for a cheaper holiday.

“There are ways that customers can help safeguard the cost of their trip, such as booking early. If they are concerned about exchange rates, all-inclusive package holidays are great stress-free options, and they are widely available in many destinations around the world,” ABTA advises.

“Even with the current exchange rate, many countries – particularly around the Mediterranean, where we take the majority of our overseas breaks – offer customers much better value holidays than in the UK.”

Turkey stands out as a cheaper destination right now. Though sterling is falling against the lira, it has at least strengthened significantly over the last year, from buying just under 12 lira to nearly 20 per pound (a 64 per cent leap).

Argentina, Sri Lanka, Hungary and Sweden offer relatively favourable rates too. As does Japan, which is fully reopening to tourists next month.

How are European travellers to the UK impacted?

The euro isn’t doing so well either, touching a 20-year low against the dollar on Monday over fears around the region’s deepening energy crisis.

So EU citizens may also notice their spending power reduced in the US.

But they could take advantage of the UK’s misfortunes to get some cheaper deals in Britain. Typically pricey hotel rooms in London will look a lot more attractive to French holidaymakers, for example, with the pound sitting at 0.9 to the euro versus an average of 1.14 in 2019.

Weiss adds that the flip side of the devalued pound is that the UK is currently “on sale” for people who want to come to visit the new king at a fraction of the cost.
