More things I had forgotten from the ARR patches: how Alphinaud basically accuses Aymeric to his face of manipulating the Scions on behalf of the Holy See for their own ends, and Aymeric just calmly looks him in the eye and is like, Wise up, kid. You and I want the same things here. It's such good foreshadowing for the fact that Alphinaud really is not as politically savvy as he thinks he is. But it's also such a great character moment for Aymeric, who is seasoned in politics and knows when to speak and when to keep his mouth shut and how to gracefully work around the obstacles laid in his path. By his measured response to Alphinaud (whom he undoubtedly recognizes as a precocious teenager shooting his mouth off thinking he's being clever), and his amiable response when Alphinaud relents and apologizes, not only does he preserve the arrangement with the Scions but he comes out looking like the magnanimous one in that situation, with the other party contrite and eager to demonstrate their cooperation.

Honestly I think Jiraiya might have been a better teacher for Sakura or Sasuke. Like his previous students were Minato "I'm gonna create my own jutsu and also learn something only the Second Hokage could do", Yahiko Konan and Nagato "being starving war orphans won't stop us from being the biggest badasses ever - oh and dying oops". Like he's used to teaching self-motivated and intelligent people like Sasuke "my life goal is murder" Uchiha and Sakura "learned how to be a top-tier doctor in two fucking years" Haruno.

Like Naruto admittedly has many good qualities but he is also. Genuinely stupid. I mean this with compassion. Bro did not know what chakra was until Sakura explained it to him and contrary to fanon belief we have no indication any teachers were fucking with his education in canon. Like Jiraiya is not suited to him as a teacher and it shows because he comes back after 2 years with him and has learned basically nothing lmao. He needs someone who is willing to sit down with him and force knowledge into is head and Jiraiya is not that.

i think one of the things about soisages humor that rubs me the wrong way is how much of a charade he makes out of being queer. I know it's all in good fun, however for a person who has never openly identified as queer to be making such a joke about being a "boy kisser" and all his friends being queer too feels very weird and kind of goes against the lived experiences of queer people? because historically people who make these kinds of jokes who are not part of the community tend to actually be very hateful towards the community? I know cc!soisoge is not like this but it reminds me of those types of people.

Au that happens earlier, sort of mid-apocalypse after the Lights Went Out where the Flare still infects a shitton of people but some people are mutated by it instead, basically still themselves but with weird abilities, and they're fucked on all sides because WCKD wants to dissect them, military forces want to blow them to bits, normal people are terrified of them bc they are still technically infectious, and even others like them want to be cured or kill each other bc they're "monsters". Thomas is an Evolved (what WCKD is calling the mutated people) that was infected on purpose to try and find the mutation genome, escapes when they try to basically vivisect him, and is found by the Gladers. They were trying to escape the quarantine zone, but now they're switching tack to fuck up WCKD after realising oh no these guys are making things Worse, what the fuck, goddam it, and now Thomas is dealing with an insane evil organization as well as the fact he's bi for the cute English guy that almost killed him that one time

and like, the Flare is canonically WICKED’s fault, a bioweapon that spurred out of their control and are trying to rein it back. so, having his whole worldview and childhood crushed, Thomas books it (what’s the vote on Teresa being aware of WCKD’s plan to never find a cure? of her being aware of the blatant violation of medical ethics? bc i wanna say yes :D)

OH AND WE CAN MAYBE WORK IN NEWTMAS BEING CHILDHOOD FRIENDS BEFORE WCKD WIPED THE GLADERS’ MEMORIES

WCKD separated Thomas and the other special Elites from the other kids that it takes Newt some time to put two and two together. meanwhile, Thomas’s memories pre-Swipe are so fuzzy, only remembering his life post-separation, but he receives dreams of them because the Flare is a virus that eats at the brain, slowly chewing at WCKD’s memory block

It's objectively a bad book?

This is only about the book, not the movie, and it's only the first book. Ok? Ok.

Thomas is too perfect. The only bad thing about him is that he used to be "evil", and even then he was forced to and you sympathize with him. The changing means nothing to him because it means nothing in general. It's just a "turn crazy" card. It's literally the Flare (which doesn't make sense in itself because if a solar flare actually hit the earth it wouldn't cause disease, but it's science fiction so I'll let it pass) but for the Glade and it gives people memories. Go back and reread it, it's not consistent. Ben was grotesque but Alby wasn't? And then Thomas had a peaceful but kinda nightmarish nap?

And then he wakes up and Zart is dead. AND IT DOESN'T MATTER. He's never mentioned again. He doesn't matter. Albys death? Ultimately doesn't matter. Because his sacrifice wasn't one, it was an excuse for him to kill himself. And even then it doesn't work. It was worthless for no reason. And we don't sympathize for him because all he has done was be mean to Thomas. If I had written it, he would've died instead of Chuck and had more nice moments with Thomas. GIVE THE BOOK DEPTH.

I don't care that anyone died because we didn't have enough time with them. So at least don't have a character die for shock value wtf? It's so pointless. And the lack of female characters my god. I get that's the point but even them, once Theresa showed up I forget she existed. Why? I didn't care about her. Anything she could do Thomas could do better. She was a plot device, not a character.

It reminds me of Harry Potter. Cjs white straight male protagonist with a destiny to save the world or a society, with a power nobody else has (even though it doesn't mean anything), not so great world building, making everyone else an idiot to make the biggest idiot seem smart (like come on, what do you mean the runners couldn't solve the maps in 2 years but Thomas solves it in a week?). Great characters that get discarded in favour of worse characters, misuse of plot devices, it's so similar it's scary.

And they are both popular.

Write better books. Pls I just want good literature.

Diving back into the Space Ant Book & something I wanna mention unrelated to bugs is that Han Solo is great in this book. Like, it's been a while since I watched the OT, but the characterization just feels spot on in how he's reacting to all this insectoid nonsense, ie, VERY grouchily. He's also the only non-Forcie in this group of friends, family, & in-laws. So you've got Luke and Mara Jade and whoever else slowly uncovering the workings of the hive mind and how to coax information out of them via Force means, and they're experiencing this situation as detectives in a mystery story. Then they explain the info they've learned to Han and he's like ARE YOU SAYING MY DAUGHTER THINKS SHE'S A BUG

So I imagine they have skin, the same way THK has a hardened layer of void that acts as chitin, but it still feels extremely weird. It's cold and by extension probably feels a bit wet even if it isn't, and probably starts to hurt you if you hold them for a long time.
