“what is it,  baby?”   alex freezes in place,  feeling the pull of abilene’s dainty hand,  fingertips gripping the front of his jumpsuit.   there’s desperation in the gesture that anchors him to her bedside.   his heart clenches painfully in his chest as pale blue eyes flicker down to focus on her face —   the same face that he loves more than anything,  now etched with pain and weariness.   hazel hues glistening with unshed tears.   his strong,  fierce abilene,  reduced to this.   hurting and broken,  all because of the nightmare they’ve been forced to live through.   he curses the capitol and those disgusting men again in his mind,  his fists tightening briefly at his sides.   “hey,  don’t you cry,  sweetheart…   the war’s almost over.   and i promised to bring them to justice.   all i need is a few more days.” 

but her voice,  so fragile and pleading,  shakes him to the core.   it’s almost too much to bear.   he can see how much it costs her to ask this of him,  to let her pride fall away and beg him to abandon his mission.   to go home with her,  instead.   deep down,  he knows she’s right —   they should leave.   snow’s days must truly be numbered,  and what more could the two of them accomplish by staying here?   by seeking more blood,  more vengeance?   but there’s still that fire burning inside him,  the need to make them pay for everything.   every scar on her,  every tear she’s shed,  every loss they’ve suffered.   the capitol has taken so much from them,  and the idea of just leaving without delivering that final justice gnaws at him.   “what if they’re still out there,  abi?”   the men who took advantage of her.   that kind never changes.   “alive and well?   and willing to do it all over again to someone else?” 

looking into her eyes,  his fury and hatred begin to waver.   she just wants to go home,  to forget,  to heal.   and isn’t that the very same thing that he wants,  too?   to have her and the boys safe,  far from this bloodshed?   his heart’s torn and there’s a battle raging between vengeance and love.   though,  the longer he studies her olive visage,  the clearer the choice becomes.   he sits back down on the edge of her bed,  his hand gently covering hers,  loosening the tight grip she has on his jumpsuit but never truly letting go.   his other hand brushes a lock of hair from her face,  tucking it behind her ear with a tenderness that makes his own chest ache.   “mi vida,”   he parrots softly,  voice thick with emotion.   he leans forward,  pressing his forehead to hers,  closing his eyes as he draws in a breath.   “none of this matters more than you,  than us.   i love you.   i’ll take you home,  but…   twelve is gone.   where would we go?   where’s home now?”   he lets out a shaky breath,  swallowing his anger,  letting it drain from him with every word.   “and your leg.   it needs time to heal.”   his thumb grazes over her bruised knuckles.   he just hates the thought of her having to endure another moment of pain,  of reliving the horrors they’ve both seen.

❛ alex . ❜ as pathetic as it was , abilene whimpered when he moved away from her , her hands reaching after him and grasping nothing but the sheets of the cot for a moment . the shifting of her body when he got up and from abilene reaching for him caused a fresh wave of white-hot pain to shoot up her leg . she grit her teeth and grimaced and when alex leaned over to kiss her head she reached for him again . this time , her hand grasped the front of his jumpsuit in her fist .

her full lips parted , but no words came out . there was suddenly too many thoughts swimming around in her head , too many words that she wanted to say . she wanted to plead with him to stay , pride be damned she'd be pathetic if it meant that he'd stay . she wanted to reassure him . she wanted to tell him that it really wasn't so bad , at least she wasn't hallucinating like in the arena .

she'd make up some funny story about how when she'd gotten bitten before she'd been certain that the little fly buzzing around her head had ceasar flickerman's head singing home on the range or something . it wasn't true , the real hallucinations had been horrific and terrifying and not anything she wanted to repeat let alone remember . but that would get him to smile , wouldn't it ? and then he'd stay , wouldn't he ? and he'd agree to go home with her in the morning and they'd never even speak of the capitol again .

her lower lip quivered , hazel eyes glossy and wet . it was unfair of her to ask him to give up on everything . it was selfish and wrong to beg him to leave with her without any justice for everything that had happened to him . he wanted to seek vengeance for her as well for every hand that was laid on her vengeance she didn't want and had refused to give him the names he asked for . abilene was tired , and her heart was heavy . finnick was dead , and that little girl from twelve , and the crew and . . . she squeezed her eyes shut as though it could ward off the memories , her head shaking as though it could ward off the screams and the hissing .

then there were their infallible leaders . the secret vote held shortly after president snow was captured . all of the victors had been sworn to secrecy and it was a secret that weighed heavily on abilene , one she was afraid to share with alex . she wasn't afraid of him . she was afraid that his anger and hurt would take hold inside of him and change him from the alexander she loved .
