DAY 10 in Twisted Strangetown: The Mysterious Death of Loki Beaker

THE PREVIOUS DAY

Abhijeet: So...about our most recent assignment.

Crystal: Yeah...it's going to be quite hard, won't it?

Abhijeet: Yeah! How exactly are we supposed to get inside of the Smith's house to kill Jenny? Their house is gated.

Crystal: Oh, I thought you were referring to the fact that we had to kill Jenny in the first place. And the truth is, I don't know. Right now, I just feel really bad for Lazlo. Doesn't seem like Flo took what he said at the meeting very well.

Abhijeet: Agreed. That smile she was making was so creepy...though, we probably shouldn't be dissing her like this inside of her own house.

Crystal: True.

"To stop him from handing tips,

Cast this spell to seal his lips.

His voice returns on one exception,

Bring two souls of full perception."

Lazlo: Wait, Flo! Don't-

Of all of the things we expected to happen in Strangetown, this was definitely not one of them.

Our new suspect, Loki, is dead.

Circe won't stop beating the fuck out of the test subject. Honestly, I kinda feel bad for him. But in her defense, after that horrible fire he created, I would not put it past that guy to kill Loki on accident...or on purpose. These guys do not treat him well. I'd lash out too, if I were him. Honestly, I'd feel bad charging him for anything.

And also that bitch Erin is here, along with Pascal and Olive. I'm guessing one of the three could've done it too, so now we have to hold them here alongside Nervous to figure out who it was. Circe was at work and Lola contacted her coworkers who confirmed that she was at work for the entire time, so we can rule her out as a suspect. Circe's also offered to help, but I'm not sure how much help I can get from a sadist who's coping by attacking everyone.

Lola and Ajay did say that they wanted to focus on the main mission and that we "shouldn't get sidetracked" and all that, so I decided to just do it myself. Definitely going to be looking forward to interrogating these fuckers...

It's incredibly convenient that the Beakers just have torture interrogation equipment in their house.

Chloe: So, what were you doing at the Beakers?

Pascal: Olive and I came together to talk to Nervous, and then we heard screaming before noticing Loki flying out of a window and twitching as he got shocked.

Chloe: The lie detector's saying that you're not telling the truth.

Pascal: What reason would I have to lie?

Chloe: You've got a great motive. You two are workplace rivals, and you're dating the guy he's been experimenting on. I know any rational man would hate the man torturing his lover.

Pascal: That is true, yes.

Chloe: So you're guilty.

Pascal: What? Just because I have some common decency? Can I at least get a lawyer?

Chloe: Nope. Now, tell me about your relationship with

Pascal: I refuse to speak any longer without a lawyer present.

Chloe: Okay, fine. I'll interrogate someone else.

Olive: Pascal and I came here together to talk to Loki, but he told us to wait downstairs as he went to the bathroom. Then, we heard screaming before noticing him falling out of the window.

Chloe: Pascal said you came to talk to Nervous.

Olive: Did he, now?...That's just what he thinks. Have you seen those two together in a room? They're practically insufferable. Reminds me of the things I'd do with the Reaper whenever I saw him...

Chloe: (Ew, please don't tell me about that!) Sure...

Olive: I must've forgotten. I suppose we wanted to talk to both...my memory isn't as good as it was before.

Chloe: Sure it isn't. Was there a reason why you and Pascal came together? You two don't usually get along.

Olive: Can't a woman have a change of heart? He's my future son-in-law, after all.

Chloe: Sure...alright, whatever.

Erin: Hello! I'm Erin. It's such a pleasure to meet you, Ms. SCIA Agent! What's your name?

Chloe: (I wish I could punch her face in.) Nice to see you too, Erin. And I'm not interested in telling you my name. Just tell me what you came here for.

Erin: Oh, I just wanted to talk to my brother! But then I see him flying out the window, and next thing I know I see Pascal and Olive racing down the stairs! They probably would've left if Nervous didn't happen to be downstairs and wanted to say hi.

Chloe: ...I see

Erin: Also, I got this recording!

Pascal: And you're sure this is going to work?

Olive: Of course. Once Loki is gone, we'll be able to get Nervous out of the house and back with us. We can deal with Circe afterwards.

Pascal: I'm just scared we'll get caught. I've got a daughter to care for and family that depend on me, and I don't want to spend my life behind bars.

Olive: Chill out. I'll take care of the murder. You just drag the bodies back to my house and bury them there....think of it as a mother-in-law and son-in-law bonding activity.

Pascal: Well, alright. I'll trust your judgement.

Erin: See?

Chloe: You were trespassing on Specter property? That's a crime in itself.

Erin: Oh COME ON! Trespassing isn't as bad of a crime as literal MURDER!

Chloe: If they were the murderers. What were you even doing on their property, anyway?

Erin: ...Stealing their newspaper...

Chloe: Theft and trespassing, huh?...I see. You've given me enough to work with.

Erin: But-

Chloe: NEXT!

Nervous: ...I'm sorry. It wasn't me...I promise.

Chloe: It's okay, we're not going to hurt you. Just tell us what you saw.

Nervous: Well...Circe left for work...Loki was cleaning the house. Then Erin came and asked if Loki was home, so I told her and she went upstairs. After that Pascal and Olive came asking to see Loki, so I told them that they went upstairs and then they went. A bit later, the two of them went downstairs and a little bit later I heard screaming...

Chloe: So Erin came first, huh?...thank you, Nervous. You've been a great help.

Nervous: I have?

Chloe: Yep. I think I know who did this now...

Chloe: After some careful deduction, I've come to my conclusion...

Chloe: Erin did it!

Erin: WHAT? I literally showed you a video of Pascal and Olive plotting! How would it be me?

Chloe: Because if it wasn't, you would've taken that video to the police instead of saving it for your interrogation.

Erin: Okay, fine! It was me! I overheard the plan and decided to kill Loki myself in order frame them!

Circe: How could you?! Erin! I thought we were friends!

Erin: I'm only friends with Loki! I could care less about you! You're the most insufferable person I've ever met!

Circe: You mean "couldn't," you dumb bitch?

Erin: Why would you care, anyway? You don't even have a heart. You're like...you're like a sociopath or something!

Chloe: Oh, arresting her is going to be so satisfy-

Circe: You piece of shit! I'LL KILL YOU!

Chloe: Well, that concludes this mystery. Circe, normally I'm supposed to arrest you for murder, but instead I'll just have you lose custody of Nervous, who will return under the care of Olive.

Circe: That's fine.

Chloe: But we will have to charge you for illegal experimentation and medical malpractice, so we'll probably have to take you to court about that in order to settle on a proper punishment.

Lola: ...How did you finish this already? I thought it would take at least a week.

Pascal: Awesome! We won!

Olive: Can we go home now?

Chloe: Yeah, obviously. We're done here.

Olive: Oh, finally.

Nervous: Pascal! We can live together now!...you know what that means, right?

Olive: Oh Watcher, you two are gross. I'm leaving.

Chloe: (I'll just leave those two at it.) So, what now?

Circe: I already contacted Meredith to move in with me. I think she'll make a pretty good test subject.

Chloe: You sure move on fast.

Circe: No point in dwelling. Besides, there's plenty of other people out there. I'm sure it shouldn't be hard to find someone else.

Circe: Well...I wish you all the best.

Circe: Thanks, Chloe...oh, and if you want, I can give you access to some of Loki's documents. He's been doing research on weather alternations and mind control, but stopped both after he caused eternal winter. Not sure why, but maybe you'll find some use to it.

Chloe: Hm...alright. Let me see.

Chloe: (Oh, fuck! This is gold!...I have to get this to Ajay and Lola as soon as I can!)

Genetically Correct Clean Template Strangetown With Scripted Events - CC FREE

I’m back with another genetically correct hood! You can check out my GC version of Pleasantview with scripted events here - I also explain what genetically correct means there as well in case you aren’t sure :)

Today as part of my quest to make all Sims 2 hoods genetically correct, I bring you Strangetown!

General Information:

This is a genetically correct version of Strangetown. All sim appearances have been corrected so they now resemble their ancestors! This hood was built on top of clean templates, and no other changes have been made to the hood aside from the adjustments to the sim’s appearances and DNA!

Notice: I used a mod, equal genetics while creating these sims. I do not claim to be anything but a simpleton when it comes to genetics, and I know that some of these sims’ genetics aren’t realistic - Like a blond and brunette having a blond kid. I don’t claim to know anything about genetics, so before you genetic purists come at me just know - I know this and don’t care.

My general notion was that if one of their ancestors had a gene, then they could too.

Notes:

- This is CC FREE

- I used a default skin and eyes when taking the pictures. The sims will not come with these. I used Pitstop Skinblend and Poppet Clear Eyes

- All sims have been given recessive genetics - and I will say here and now they may not make actual sense scientifically speaking, once more - I don’t care about that. 98% of the sims - even the ancestors - have recessive genes. At the very end of the post you will find a chart of each sim and their recessive genes.

- Sims may get some wants or fears of their ancestors or dead relatives becoming zombies or resurrected, this is just because of the way I did this, their deaths are fresh in the playables minds.

- This hood was built on a clean template Strangetown, all ancestors and dead sims are safe to resurrect

- This was made with Ultimate Collection, so unfortunately you will need this or all packs for this to work.

- Pascal’s unborn baby will be genetically correct as well

- When you add the subhood version with townies, you’ll notice that the townie and NPC names get randomized and aren’t their original names. Though annoying, this is normal and you will have to rename them all yourself.

- The no townie version of ST STILL comes with Bella Goth, Crystal Vu, Abhijeet Cho and Meredith Lillard. 

- I used two different clean template versions for this hood. There may be slight differences depending on what the original creators of the clean templates did to the hood. See credits.

- Bella Goth is also genetically correct with her PV ancestors

- Some sims such as Ophelia Nigmos and Kristen Loste had no ancestors with the original hairs, skins and/or eyes they have in the BG hood. Because of this, I chose the next best hair/eyes/skins that I felt brought more genetic diversity to the hood and kept the original feel of the sim

Important notice about Scripted Events:

If you are having issues with the Scripted Events: FIRST - Navigate to your "Documents/EA Games/The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection (or The Sims 2)/Neighborhoods" and delete the NeighborhoodManager.package file within this folder. Reload your game. When you load the game back up it will automatically regenerate a new, fresh NeighborhoodManager.package file - See if this fixes the scripted event problem. For some reason it can break really easily and a majority of the time resetting this file will do the trick. HUGE thanks to Cindy from PleasantSims for suggesting this! All credit to her! SECOND - If the first suggestion doesn't work, you will need to redownload the hood, and BEFORE you run your game, take out all of your non essential mods (leave in mods like no unlink on delete, no townie regen, things that are essential) from your mods folder (just mods, cc is fine to stay in) and put it in a safe folder while you just play through the SE - then when they're done, put the mods back in. 99.9999% of the time either of these suggestions will fix the problem. If you try both and they don't work, let me know

Abhijeet: So, is Jenny still bugging you?

Chloe: *snorts* She’s trying to. I love her to death but she really needs to stop asking! Abhijeet: She’ll have a new-born to distract her soon enough. 

Kristen spent most of her evenings (to nobody’s surprise) exercising.

And yet she knew she needed to stop hiding in her house when she wasn’t at work. She’d need to face Alec at some point, and she needed to face her worries. She also needed to let him off the hook, and let him know how she felt...before someone else snatched him up.

Erin: Lola, how do you get a man to notice you?

Lola: *scoffs* Erin, this isn’t a fairy-tale and this isn’t romantic.

Lola: I’ll be blunt, as always. You need to give him space. For fuck’s sake, date someone else! Just stop stalking him! You wanna get the Deputy to put a restraining order on you for Ajay’s benefit? Ajay has a high end job and he is quite important in town.

Erin: *huffs* He never told me his job. Lola: As he shouldn’t, it’s not exactly public knowledge what he does and no, I’m not telling you. Erin: How do you know what he does?! Lola: *rolls eyes* I have my sources and I want to be mayor of this town. There’s things you need to know in my place.

Beaker Household: Week 1

TW: Mild torture, starvation, temporary character death

We start off the week with some interesting wants.

I’m so sorry Nervous, but you can’t move out yet.

STOP IT NERVOUS YOU’RE BREAKING MY HEART

For some reason, Loki wanted to hire a maid. Don’t think I’ve ever had a Sim roll that want before.

Unsurprisingly, Loki and Circe’s favorite hobby is science.

Nervous tried talking to the maid, but they didn’t really get along.

So instead, he invited over his only friend (so far), Pascal Curious.

The welcome wagon arrived shortly after, consisting of the Singles household, sans Erin.

Nervous finally showed his interest in Pascal, rolling wants to ask him out on a date, and flirt. However, being a Shy and Grouchy Sim, Nervous was not looking forward to being the one to make the first move. Never before have I seen a Sim walk with such a dejected look.

Pascal’s into it!

Circe managed to nab that promotion she was after.

Buy a massage table? Maybe.

Buy a sauna? No.

Buy a game costing at least $3000? Absolutely the fuck not.

I ended up buying her the massage table, only to forget about its existence.

Seeing Pascal passed out in his food, I decided it was time to send our guests home.

Just in time, too. Circe got a call from her friend, Abhijeet Cho, asking if she wanted to go downtown with him and a bunch of other townies. Nervous tagged along, and Loki was going to, but he decided at the last second to go do something else instead of getting in the taxi.

Circe had a good time with the group and Sim Bowl Lanes, while Nervous was off doing his own thing. “And what was he doing?” you didn’t ask, but I’m going to pretend you did anyway.

Jumping on the couch, and bathing in the sink of a public restroom.

While everyone was waiting on the taxi to come take them to Cold Issue Clothing, Nervous started arguing with Benjamin Long, only to then be picked on by Kennedy Cox.

The reason for being here is that Circe, surprisingly wanted to buy new clothes and some jewelry. For a Sim with literally 0 interest in fashion, she rolled the “Buy New Clothes” want a lot. And I’ve never come across it before this household.

Eh, that one’s not bad. I decided to let that be her shirt for colder seasons.

Their needs were super low upon coming home, so I decided to make use of one of the Eclectic and Enigmatic Energizer they had lying around. I was a little worried it might backfire on Nervous, since his aspiration meter was in the green, but one of the things that makes the Sims 2 fun is the risk involved. Luckily, the machine worked.

Circe then rolled a want to gain a skill point, so she’s practicing creativity with the SensoTwich Lie Finder.

Once that want was fulfilled, she rolled the want to buy new clothes again, despite having already done so that day. I wasn’t kidding when I said she rolled that want a lot.

Loki ended up with Family as his secondary aspiration, and rolled a want to have a baby. This attempt was not successful.

That’s what you get for stomping on roaches, Nervous.

Despite having no logic skill points, Nervous managed to successfully create some medicine for his flu, instead of accidentally creating a mysterious disease.

Finally managed to fulfill Circe’s want to spy on her neighbors. Mortimer was not enthused by the idea of being spied on, and ran all the way over from Pleasantview to call her out on it.

“Be Saved From Death” You know what? Sure!

Loki’s really upset about the roaches.

Nervous randomly started arguing with Circe. I know it’s because he’s a Grouchy Sim, but I like to think he’s finally starting to stand up to the Beakers.

I was too impatient to let Nervous get better on his own, even with the medicine shortening the duration he’d be sick, so I had him make some Grandma’s Comfort Soup to cure him.

But he immediately got sick again. Turns out that, since he ate an entire bowl of soup, he was in one spot long enough to drop a flu token, which he picked up again. Also turns out that Sims don’t need to eat the entire bowl to be cured. So he ate a couple bites from a second bowl and was cured properly this time.

Nervous invited Pascal over that night, where he shared his first kiss with him.

Only for Pascal to immediately go home. Awkward.

Slow down Nervous. Maybe take Pascal on a date first before proposing.

Arthob showed up to the lot randomly, and I found out that she’s a wolf, because she fulfilled Loki’s “See a Wolf” want. Loki also keeps rolling wants to become a werewolf, and I read that befriending wolves attracts the pack leader. Good thing Nervous gets along very well with her.

Olive Specter called, asking if her son, Nervous, was available to talk. I had Circe say no, even though Nervous wasn’t busy, because I feel like that’s something she would do.

No thoughts. Head empty. Only rage.

I checked his relationships panel, and he was furious with Nervous, but for whatever reason, whenever Loki thought about how angry he was with Nervous, his thought bubble was blank.

Arthob showed up again that night, and Loki surprised me by rolling a want to play with her.

I also read that laying out bones that were dug up while looking for treasure attracts wolves, including the pack leader. So, I’m putting that to the test.

Uh ... not what I was looking for.

Circe had formed a group, consisting of her, Loki, Erin Beaker, Meredith Lillard, and Abhijeet Cho. Loki invited them all to 94 Road to Nowhere, but since he doesn’t know Meredith or Abhijeet well enough, Erin was the only member of Mitochondria to show up. Still, I managed to get the meter up to “Fun”, so it’s not a total loss.

It was at this moment that I remembered the massage table I bought for Circe two Sim days ago. Only to forget about it again.

Erin, no! Don’t fall for the Unsavory Charlatan’s tricks!

ERIN!!!!

The next morning, Nervous and Loki get into an argument. I genuinely can’t remember who initiated it, but judging by the poses, I think it was Nervous.

All three Sims rolled a want to go fishing, so they took a taxi over to Hunter’s Park.

Nervous’ first catch ended up being a boot.

Ah yes. There’s nothing quite like fishing to the sound of amateur musicians.

Deciding he was done after catching one fish, Nervous left the lake to go chill out on a park bench.

He then rolled a want to influence someone to clean. The only one he had a chance of convincing was Circe. And it worked. She not only cleaned up the plates from the hotdogs, but also cleaned the restroom toilets and sinks.

Loki did not react well, and poked Sophie Miguel in retaliation.

While digging around for bones, Nervous managed to find a map for Twikkii Island. Well, I know where Nervous and Pascal are going for their honeymoon!

Nervous’ next attempt at digging was not so fruitful.

The rest of that day, and much of the next, was spent trying to starve Circe in order to fulfill her “Be Saved From Death” want. This was not a pleasant experience for me, as I don’t like hurting my Sims.

You better not fuck this up, Loki.

YES!!

Circe has ended up being one of the Sims that’s surprised me. Bella Goth turned out to be really into robotics. Dina Caliente ended up being a nature lover who wanted to start a family. And Circe? She constantly wants to buy either ceiling fans (I’ve bought them three so far), or a really expensive electronic device they can barely afford. Normal Fortune Sims also roll wants to advance in their careers, or to earn money, but Circe pretty much just want to buy expensive stuff, with the occasional want relating to her secondary Knowledge aspiration (hence wanting to be saved from death).

As much as it pains me, I figured I should at least try to have the Beakers live up to their backstory as evil scientists performing unethical human experiments. Even though I know none of these objects work that way, gameplay-wise, I also know that’s what’s supposed to be going on story-wise.

That night, Nervous asked Pascal out on a date to 88 Road to Nowhere.

Gee, I wonder what could be going on in there.

Guess who said “yes” when Nervous popped the question!

His happiness came to an end not long after returning home, when it was Circe’s turn to be an evil scientist by stealing his skill points with the SimVac.

Very early Saturday morning, I finally hear a lullaby jingle from these two.

Turns out, the alarm clock affects the Environment need. Not just that, but it will be lower the closer you are to it. It’s the little details that really make this game!

Circe finally started rolling wants to increase her skills again, so she’s working on her mechanical skill for her job.

Erin randomly showed up to the house to hang out. Most likely to hang out with her brother, but Loki’s at work, so Circe’s doing it instead.

It may look like they’re not getting along, but they actually were.

“So, how’s the ‘psychic’ business going?”

Nervous ignored everyone in favor of studying fire safety.

Despite having fairly high logic skill, Loki managed to contract Mysterious Disease twice in one night. The first time, I flipped a coin and it landed on heads, so he had some Grandma’s Comfort Soup. The second time, I decided to let it be up to fate, and quarantined him in the guest bedroom. He had a “Be Saved From Death” want, anyway.

Early Sunday morning, Circe gained the first baby bump.

Nervous gained enough enthusiasm in Cuisine to serve chips & dip, and earned a magazine subscription.

Well, that was easy. It wasn’t even noon before he was healthy again.

Arthob stopped by again, and I’m really tempted to let Nervous adopt her.

That afternoon, Circe invited the Mitochondria group back to 94 Road to Nowhere, and this time, everybody showed up. Circe and Meredith hung out with each other, whle everybody else chilled in the hot tub.

Dude, that’s your wife you’re talking about. The outing was going well for a while, but then Circe’s aspiration meter decayed to gold, dropping the outing meter from “Fun” to “Boring”.

And Circe closed the week with a reminder of how much of a challenge it is to manage a pregnant Sims’ needs.

The phase of bad news from the film industry is not ending during the lockdown. After Irrfan Khan, Rishi Kapoor, Shafiq Ansari, Sai Gundevar, Tamil film director Avi Arun Prasad, Abhijeet, a close friend of Shah Rukh Khan and a special member of Red Chillies Entertainment, has passed away.

India's second Covid wave hits like a 'tsunami' as hospitals buckle under weight Graveyards are running out of space, hospitals are turning away patients, and desperate families are pleading for help on social media for beds and medicine. India reported 295,041 cases of coronavirus and 2,023 deaths Wednesday, its highest rise in cases and highest death increase recorded in a single day since the beginning of the pandemic, according to a CNN tally of figures from the Indian Ministry of Health. “The volume is humongous,” said Jalil Parkar, a senior pulmonary consultant at the Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai, which had to convert its lobby into an additional Covid ward. “It’s just like a tsunami.” “Things are out of control,” said Ramanan Laxminarayan, director of the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics and Policy in New Delhi. “There’s no oxygen. A hospital bed is hard to find. It’s impossible to get a test. You have to wait over a week. And pretty much every system that could break down in the health care system has broken down,” he said. To prove his point, at least 22 Covid-19 patients who were on ventilator support died Wednesday waiting for oxygen supplies that were lost in an accident, a senior official from the Nashik district in the Indian state of Maharashtra said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on Tuesday, acknowledging the country’s “very big battle” against Covid-19. He appealed to states to “use a lockdown as their last option,” even as the capital New Delhi entered its first full day of a week-long lockdown. On Monday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal warned that failing to halt movement in the city could lead to “tragedy.” “We don’t want to take Delhi to a place where patients are lying in hospital corridors and people are dying on roads,” Kejriwal said. On Tuesday, he warned that some Delhi hospitals were “left with just a few hours of oxygen,” as authorities scrambled to convert sports complexes, banquet halls, hotels and schools into much-needed treatment centers, with the goal to add 6,000 additional beds within days. “Our healthcare system has reached its limit. It is now in a state of distress. It has not collapsed yet but it is in distress,” Kejriwal said. “Every healthcare system has its limits. No system can accommodate unlimited patients.” With shortages being reported across the country, local and state leaders appealed to the federal government for more oxygen and medicine. Modi appeared to answer those calls on Tuesday, announcing plans for the delivery of 100,000 cylinders of oxygen nationwide, new oxygen production plants, and hospitals dedicated to Covid patients. But experts fear it’s too little, too late, as positive patients compete for limited resources and mass gatherings threaten to spread the virus even further. In Wednesday’s incident in which the 22 people died in the Indian state of Maharashtra, senior official Suraj Mandhare told reporters the oxygen was lost due to a leakage from a tanker at the Zakir Hussain hospital. “There was a valves leakage in tankers in Nashik, it was a large scale leakage, definitely this would impact the hospital where the tankers were headed,” Maharashtra’s health minister Rajesh Tope told reporters Wednesday. The district administration is coordinating with hospital officials to make oxygen available to patients who need it at the earliest, Mandhare said. The patients who died required oxygen as their “pressure” was low and the leakage from this shipment meant that they did not receive the supply in time, Mandhare added. India’s Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah tweeted about the event saying: “I am distressed to hear the news of the accident of oxygen leak in a hospital in Nashik. I express my deepest condolences on this irreparable loss of those who have lost their loved ones in this accident. I pray to God for the health of all the other patients.” In Maharashtra there is currently a daily demand for 1,550 metric tons of oxygen for Covid-19 patients but the state manufactures 1,250 metric tons of oxygen which is being used entirely for medical purposes. The remaining 300 metric tons are being supplied by other states, Tope told reporters Wednesday. Maharashtra has 3,343,359 cases of coronavirus including 685,552 active cases and 61,343 deaths according to the Indian Ministry of Health on Wednesday. Pleading for help online With few official options available, families are turning to social media for help. Mumbai resident Anil Tiwari, 34, lost his father to Covid-19 in November last year. Last week, his 58-year-old mother tested positive. She was admitted to hospital but needed an intensive care unit (ICU) bed, Tiwari said. “I’m crying, running to get ICU bed for my mother,” Tiwari tweeted on Monday. “Kindly help to save my mother I love her more than anything.” After days of effort, including calling the municipal authorities to get on a waitlist, Tiwari’s mother was finally given an ICU bed, Tiwari said on Tuesday. But now, she needs oxygen, which the hospital is in short supply of. She is still able to walk, but is having difficulty breathing, Tiwari said. Demand for the drug Remdesivir and its active pharmaceutical ingredients has spiked during the second wave, prompting the government to temporarily ban the export of the medication to increase its supply in the domestic market. The Indian government has approved the drug for emergency use within hospitals, though the World Health Organization (WHO) says evidence does not suggest the drug lessens the risk of dying from Covid-19 or needing mechanical ventilation. Abhijeet Kumar, a 20-year-old college student, took to Twitter to raise money to pay for Remdesivir injections for his 51-year-old uncle. Kumar said his uncle had been in hospital in Raipur, in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, since April 9 after testing positive for Covid. “The injections are very expensive,” Kumar said. “They are saying it costs between 12,000 to 15,000 rupees (about $160-200). He has gotten two doses of the injection but he needs a third and we can’t afford it … my uncle works as a plumber.” Seven major manufacturers of Remdesivir have slashed prices to between 899 rupees and 3,490 rupees (about $12-47) due to “the intervention of the government,” according to a government memorandum on April 17. But several states have acknowledged that high demand and low supply has created a black market for Remdesivir and similar medications. Even many doctors and nurses, too, are frantically searching for open beds and treatment options for their own loved ones, said Parkar, the pulmonary specialist in Mumbai. “Everybody is sick,” he said. “A time has come that we don’t have beds for our own colleagues, for our own parents, for our own extended family.” Complacency and public gatherings The second wave, which has long surpassed the first wave in both new cases and infection rate, was “a situation that was created by complacency,” said Laxminarayan, from the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics and Policy. After the first wave ended in the winter, the government and public relaxed too much, due to a mix of Covid fatigue and a false sense of security, experts say. In early March, weeks before cases began climbing again, the federal health minister declared that India was “in the endgame” of the pandemic. This kind of triumphant rhetoric meant residents relaxed their Covid-safe behavior, such as social distancing or wearing face masks, experts say. And, despite warnings of Covid risks, large gatherings continued to take place — sports matches resumed, elaborate weddings went ahead, and movie cinemas reopened. The biggest gathering by far is the Kumbh Mela, an important Hindu festival and one of the biggest pilgrimages on Earth. Millions of Indians are traveling from across the country to Haridwar, an ancient city in Uttarakhand state, to attend ceremonies and prayers and take holy dips in the Ganges River. The festival officially began on April 1 and ends later this month. There are Covid-safe guidelines in place — visitors must register online and provide a negative Covid-19 test to participate in the holy baths, and thousands of officers are conducting surveillance — but experts worry it won’t be enough to contain the risk, given the sheer number of attendees. Several million are expected to visit on “auspicious” days. “The Kumbh Mela could go down as one of the largest mass super spreading events ever, simply because of the size of the number of people who show up there for the ritual bathing in the Ganges,” said Laxminarayan. For weeks, Modi, who has a significant Hindu base, refrained from commenting on the Kumbh Mela and its Covid risks. But earlier this week, he finally appealed to pilgrims to avoid congregating in Haridwar. “Now Kumbh should be carried out symbolically amid the ongoing corona crisis,” Modi tweeted on Saturday. But for some, Modi’s message rang hollow, as the prime minister continued to hold massive political rallies ahead of parliamentary and local council elections in four states and one union territory. Videos from Modi’s rallies, including one in Tamulpur in Assam state on April 3, show him speaking before massive crowds, packed tightly together and cheering. In West Bengal state, a significant election ground, tens of thousands attended rallies by Modi’s Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and the ruling Trinamool Congress Party. Modi’s rallies have attracted sharp criticism from several other political figures, including a former finance minister who called the mass rallies “completely insensitive” given the Covid crisis. In the face of surging cases, the Indian National Congress, India’s main opposition party, has suspended all public rallies in West Bengal. And on Monday, the BJP said it would only hold “small public gatherings” with a cap of 500 people in the state due to “the difficult phase of the pandemic.” Meanwhile, the Kumbh Mela hasn’t been ordered to stop, nor have any new rules been imposed. Uttarakhand state has issued a series of new restrictions including a night curfew and cap on public gatherings — but the festival is exempt. Haridwar has seen a spike in infections, with more than 6,500 new cases reported since the Kumbh Mela began. Several religious sub-groups, including Juna Akhara and Niranjani Akhara, have since asked their followers from out of state to return home and follow guidelines. Some states and cities are requiring festival returnees to be tested and quarantined. But medical workers fear it’s too late. “It’s already gone on for a couple of weeks. Now, of course, they are dispersing, but they may be carrying the virus back to their homes at this point,” said Laxminarayan.”It’s truly a terrible situation at this point.” CNN’s Esha Mitra contributed to this report.
