Here's my Trimax vol5 review! Gonna keep it short because I'm a bit behind and all the good stuff has already been said! :) I'll just be reiterating the stuff I enjoyed and general thoughts! (Also vaguely not spoiler free for around up to vol8.)

Chapter 1:

Oh yeah the July flashback of Vash. God this is so so intense, emotionally. Notonly Vash's faces, but also how the story is told...it really is the mix between incredibly well drawn emotions AND knowing how to build up tension, how to convey the feelings of the characters and everything that makes Trigun so so good.

Look at that beautiful panel sequence of Vash not having a good time #742.

I just love this page as it is so aesthetically pleasing. The qietness. The foot holding in place after Vash nearly stumbling...the self control emitted by the pose only betrayed by the silent tears streaming down his half-hidden face...

Aaaand Zazie left the stage. Man those sand worms are really huge.

And I love how even though Meryl is definitely going through one or possibly THE worst days of her life...she's making this face at the end looking like she goes internally "UGH this CAN'T be happening to me" or "fuck this shit I'm far too cute for this stuff" (my interpretation because she is really cute).

Chapter 2:

Ah the chapter were Wolfwood is creeping up on Midvalley (as far as I understand...since he can't see atm is Wolfwood sensing Midvalley in a way? Like feeling he's here around somewhere.

And then it's Milly who saves Wolfwood and also Vash by getting in the way of Midvalley! (that is correct right? This whole stuff still has me vaguely confused even on my third read) Both girls have such great agenda in this story!

Chapter 3:

*cries* Because he's someone who wants to protect at heart!!! AAAAH!

SUCH a BEAUTIFUL page! Of course also cruel because of the pain Vash endures, his transformation as well...but...it looks just so pretty! So etheral! I think someone else said it looks a bit like a blooming flower and I totally agree!

Little peculiarities, like occasionally closing one eye. I can't cite other moments but I'm sure we've seen the twins do this some times (at least Knives, but I think Vash, too?) Oh oh I just thought of an analysis: Knives doing this, closing one eye...now think of the moment which we'll see in vol07 I think, where he smears blood over half of his face. His duality, little innocent Knives and a tortured Knives that is scared and knows only violence to defend himself. Inner conflict represented by the unconscious tendency to close one eye.

Chapter 4:

Aah now Meryl gets to see Vash's memories. She gets to know and understand him so much better, but it's all a bit too much to take in at once...She'll need time to process all that for sure but in the end I think it was able to make her belief in Vash so much stronger, because she saw what he went through and how he STILL has resolution, and not abandoned hope.

Oh yeah and the scene between Midvalley and Vash. Lots of other readers upset about Midvalley's use of the pronoun "it" for Vash and I too, am appalled as well! You people out there wrote enough great analysis about Midvalley and Wolfwood here and that, so I won't add anything. Just the beautiful contrast of Midvalley calling Vash something so unhuman, and Wolfwood even calling Vash nicknames, which is just the total opposite, and which I find very endearing.

They were also very generous when they worked on Legato's body with the length of the limbs. They are definitely longer than one needs their limbs to be. Or, re-looking at the next chapter, they are the limbs of his helper-underlings? Still too long!

Aaand Zazie is back in a new body!! I love that character, they are so cool!

And of course, the most awesome surprise in this stand-off: MERYL popping out of under Vash's wings and turning the tables completely!!

3. Apocalypse Now

First off, I have to admit, I don’t think I’ve ever really liked this movie. It’s not to say that it’s bad; Apocalypse Now is rightfully considered one of the greatest films of all time. But I’m allowed to not like it, right? Perhaps it’s the length, perhaps it’s the machismo of it all - this film is a hard pill to swallow. 

As is the case with most modern audiences, violence is hardly foreign to me. The artistic medium of film almost seems predicated on the idea of destruction - of a self, of a place, of an idea. We ooh and aah over carnage havoced by disease (Contagion or 12 Monkeys), nature (2012, Day After Tomorrow, or Earthquake), aliens (Independence Day or War of the Worlds), and by war (1917 or Gone with the Wind). I give these examples not to be overly specific but to expand on a key reason why destruction is integral to the existence of film. This is something that podcaster Dan Carlin posits could be called “painfotainment”. It’s so easy to excuse the violence we inflict on others once we’re removed from the arena. Gladiator bouts, public executions, lynchings, 24-hr news cycles, the “watch people die” sub-reddit - do these not all exist for our sickly fascination with destruction and death? It’s entertainment when it's them, it’s trauma when it’s us. 

However, we will never have to experience the trauma of a film. It’s the very essence of fiction to exercise empathy. The viewer of any film is undoubtedly a “survivor” of the events of the film, which exact no “real” harm to the viewer (i.e. we get to watch Naomi Watts survive a tsunami while we stay nice and dry). So what happens when a film attempts to dissolve that wall? What happens when a film is so utterly destructive and amoral that it begs the viewer to question what exactly is the point? This isn’t entirely my experience with Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece “Apocalypse Now”, but it’s about as close as we can get. 

If you have a semblance of a moral compass, it’s impossible to feel good after watching Apocalypse Now. Throughout its exhaustive runtime, we follow Martin Sheen’s Captain Willard as he journeys deep into the heart of Vietnam (and Cambodia) to execute the despot Colonel Kurtz, infamously played by Marlon Brando. The plot, based on the novella Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, essentially unfolds in a series of vignettes that gradually increase in paranoia, moralism, and racism. However, these themes are almost immediately forgotten over the bombardment of the visuals. Anyone who tells you they immediately think of Martin Sheen’s pensive voiceover contemplating the duality of man when discussing Apocalypse Now is lying. You think of helicopters bombing innocent villages, the “Ride of the Valkyries”, the smell of napalm in the morning. These are the lasting images of Apocalypse Now. 

When I first watched this movie, probably over ten years ago, it didn’t make any lasting impact. Watching it again two weeks ago before writing this essay, it still didn’t make an impact. In fact, I’m left with the overall feeling that the movie didn’t know what it was trying to say. The film spoke one language, and that was violence. Understandably so, the visuals of the Vietnam war were pervasive - it was the first televised war afterall. So a movie made within years of its source material is benefited by the iconography of the time. What can a movie say about something so massive and historically defining while also being a Hollywood production that must cater to the masses? Turns out, the answer has to be nothing. 

This takeaway is not new in discussing the film. Early reviews of Apocalypse Now focus heavily on three things - 1. The absurdity of the final act, 2. The visuals, and 3. The production hell. Now, the production of this film was captured excellently by Francis Ford Coppola’s wife, Eleanor - a profound film maker of her own right and the reader should not take her introduction as his wife as a mere qualifier. This documentary, Heart of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse, also happens to be on the list of 1001 Movies so I’ll discuss it at some other point. What’s important to this argument, is how a movie that was originally slated to be filmed in 4 months in the Philippines ended up taking almost an entire year. Heart Attacks, typhoons, and poor directorial management traumatized all members of the crew and Mr. Coppola paid for it out of his personal pocket. He willed this movie into existence and it’s hard to state why. Perhaps it was a sunk cost fallacy, perhaps it was the idea that he could rise to the occasion and make a great film. However, it’s abundantly clear - Coppola, like the audience, came for the violence, but didn’t want to stay for the ending. 

Coppola inadvertently sets up an interesting parallel between him and his villain, Kurtz. By willing this film into existence, he forced every crew member and all the cast through hell. Willard/Martin Sheen is no different from Dante as he ventures further and further into the depths of the Inferno, leading almost to his own demise. Willard/Martin Sheen would have never had to venture into the literal heart of darkness if it weren’t for the maniacal power of Kurtz/Francis Ford Coppola. And in both cases, real and fictional, why? How do we make sense of it all? How do you create an environment so devastated by the atrocious acts of men and then justify it in the end? I don’t think it’s possible. Kurtz knows he is not a god and should not be revered as such. Coppola knows he is not a philosopher and should not be considered one either. Both did their jobs to the fullest extent possible and now we are left to determine if they are better off for it. One can almost see it as a call for help. 

War is a hallmark of the human experience and as means of reproduction are increasingly advancing, the horrors of it, now more than ever, remove any semblance of honor or glory. Who men are and who men want to be, will never be made more clear then in war time. There are no checks, there are no balances. The Americans who set fire to Willard’s boat, undoubtedly, faced no punishment. How is one supposed to act on the battlefield when you’re told to ignore the camera filming your every action? You know what you’re doing is inhumane, and yet you proceed to do it. The PTSD can be unpacked later. Francis Ford Coppola, like those who actually served, have to rationalize their role in the Vietnam War and the effect the war has had on them. It goes without saying that the actual victims in this war are the native Vietnamese - left to the sidelines for the entire film (which is arguably the most valid argument against the greatest of Apocalypse Now, which I feel unqualified to lecture on). 

I don’t feel sorry for men like Kurtz or Francis Ford Coppola. It is men like them who impose their will on others to achieve an unjustifiable greatness. As for the average civilian or viewer, we’re left to wonder whether their efforts are worth it.

MY THOUGHTS ON VISIONS - Volume 2

I just finished watching all the shorts from the second season of Visions and I loved them!! The reviews I had heard about this season were true. This one is better than the first. Honestly, I don't know what my favorite short is. They are all so, soooo good.

I hide spoilers below the cut

One of my favorites is "Sith" because I was able to notice that the magical realism that often is present in Latin American stories, and also because of how it deals with the duality of the Force, which at the same time is the same duality that we all have. The goal is to recognize that and be vigilant of the dark side. I love the half jedi, half sith lightsaber.

"I am your mother" is sooooo but sooooooo cute and beautiful. I liked the message it has and the animation is so adorable!! (Is it me or does Dorota Van Reeple have Ahrynda Pryce vibes? I don't know if it's because she has a similar haircut or what, not to mention similar personalities, but I couldn't help thinking that if Pryce had had kids, I would have been just like Dorota 🤣)

The end of "Screecher's reach" is heartbreaking when you realize what's really going on. He resembles Akakiri from the previous season in that regard. You're all hopeful and then zap! 😞 Oh no! It's the complete opposite of the ending you predicted.

I loved the animation of “In the Stars”. And I loved the sisters, surviving together. I could also tell that it is made by Latinos. I know my people.

I was surprised how good "The Journey to the Dark Head" is. I like it a lot. It's hard to say which is my favorite short, but this is among them. It's very, very good. Especially the fight between the padawan and the sith.

I loved the story of "The spy dancer". When Loi'e noticed the imperial official and had the flashback, the first thing I thought was how the old man had lasted so long? because he was already old when he took her baby…. Then I said… Aah ! It makes sense now 😆 I also liked that it is open-ended. What happened after? There are several options to that question, depending on how you want it.

One of the aspects of "The Bandits of Golak" that I like the most is how they incorporated one of their folk myths into the plot. And the animation is beautiful, with so many colors, I don't know how to explain it, but I love the aesthetics of this short. And the fight between the jedi and the inquisitor was also very good.

"The pit" showed once again why the empire is so deplorable. When the prisoners finished digging and the troopers removed their handcuffs, my first thought was that it was too good to be true that they were being released. And guess what? I was right. And the way they killed the one who climbed out of the pit 😖 Seriously, a shot to the head would've been enough.

And finally, "Aau's song" was a nice way to end the season. The animation and the story very charming and sweet. Interesting the concept that someone force-sensitive can connect with kyber crystals with their voice, and not only that, but also have the power to purify them, and on a planetary scale too!!

In conclusion, I liked this season much more than the first, in both things: animation and plot of each short. And for the first time, I was able to see 2 of the shorts in the original language. I am happy that Latin America was well represented on this occasion.

Will there be a volume 3? I hope so, because I love seeing the perspective of people around the world on Star Wars.

MIS PENSAMIENTOS SOBRE VISIONS - Volume 2

Acabo de terminar de ver todos los cortos de la segunda temporada de Visions y me encantaron!! Las reseñas que había oído sobre ésta temporada eran ciertas. Ésta es mejor que la primera. Honestamente, no se cual es mi corto favorito. Todos son tan pero taaaaaaaaaan buenos.

Uno de mis favoritos es "Sith" porque pude notar que el realismo mágico que ha seguido se ve en las historias latinoamericanas está presente, y también por como trata la dualidad de la Fuerza, que a la vez es la misma dualidad que todos tenemos. El objetivo es reconocer eso y estar vigilante del lado oscuro. Me encanta el medio jedi, medio sith lightsaber.

"I'm your mother" es taaaaaaaaaan pero taaaaaaaaaaaaan tan cuchi y hermoso. ¡Me gusto el mensaje que tiene y la animación es tan linda!! (¿Soy yo o Dorota Van Reeple tiene las mismas vibras de Ahrynda Pryce? No sé si es porque tiene un corte de pelo parecido o que, sin hablar de personalidades similares, pero no podía dejar de pensar en que si Pryce hubiera tenido hijos, hubiera sido igualita a Dorota 🤣)

El final de "Screecher's reach" es desgarrador cuando te das cuenta lo que realmente está pasando. Se parece a Akakiri de la temporada anterior en ese sentido. Estás todo esperanzado y después ¡Zaz! 😞 Oh no! Es todo lo contrario del final que predijiste.

Me encantó la animación de “En las estrellas”. Y amé a las hermanas, sobreviviendo juntas. También podía notar que está hecho por Latinoamericanos. Conozco a mi gente.

Me sorprendió que bueno es "The Journey to the Dark head". Me gusta mucho. Es difícil decir cual es mi favorito, pero este está entre ellos. Muy muy bueno. Especialmente la pelea entre el padawan y el sith.

Me encantó la historia de "The spy dancer". Cuando Loi'e notó al oficial imperial y tuvo la memoria de años antes, lo primero que pensé fue que como el viejo había durado vivo tanto tiempo, porque ya era anciano cuando le quitó el bebé.... Después dije... Aah! Ahora tiene sentido 😆 También me gustó que tiene un final abierto. ¿Qué pasó después? Hay varias opciones a esa pregunta, dependiendo de como tú quieras.

Y la animación es hermosa, con tanto colores, no sé como explicarlo, pero me encanta la estética de este corto. Y la pelea entre la jedi y el inquisidor fue también es muy buena.

Cuando los prisioneros terminaron de excavar y los troopers le quitaron las esposas, lo primero que pensé fue que era demasiado bueno para ser verdad que los estaban liberando. ¿Y adivinen qué? Yo tenía razón. Y la forma en que mataron al que escaló el pozo 😖 En serio, un tiro en la cabeza hubiera sido suficiente.

Y por último, "Aau's song" fue una forma bonita de acabar la temporada. La animación y la historia muy bonita y dulce. Interesante el concepto de que alguien sensible a la Fuerza pueda conectarse con cristales kyber con su voz, y no solo eso, sino también tener el poder de purificarlos, y ¡a escala planetaria además!!

En conclusión, me gusto esta temporada mucho más que la primera, en ambas cosas: animación y trama de cada corto. Y por primera vez, pude ver 2 de los cortos en idioma original. Estoy feliz que Latinoamérica estuvo bien representada en esta ocasión.

Habrá un volumen 3? Espero que si, porque me encanta ver la perspectiva de personas alrededor del mundo sobre las Guerras de las Galaxias.

For this playlist, I tried to get a mix of the 90′s/early 2000′s and more modern songs because Recess aired during that time, and then these ladies have been given a contemporary spin on them, which I’ve adored following. So, of course, this iconic song must be added because it’s just listing off all the things a woman is and can be. All of these girls are complex individuals in and outside of their friendships. They all have their differing personalities that have all meshed together between one another to form this strong bond. Each one showcases that a girl can have a complex character and story! 

Countin’ Up - Rico Nasty

Not only does the content of this song apply to these gals, but the style also falls into a mix of the new and old. It’s just about her talking about how great she is lol. And good on her! Why can’t women sing and create about the things they have and the things they have accomplished? Men do it all the time to compensate. Women can do it just as easily. So that’s why I included it in for their playlist, I don’t think these girls are very shy about showing off their accomplishments, and especially not to one another! Which is great, we love women supporting women and uplifting one another. 

No Scrubs - TLC

I feel like this song speaks for itself lmao. They literally have a tier list of the kids in school and have a standard for the kind of people that they associate themselves with. No Scrubs, thanks!

A song about shedding all the politeness that’s expected from girls and just embodying the power that she creates for herself. I think this is a very Ashley song since, to them, they run the show. No one else has control of the steering wheel besides the four of them. And they don’t really care if they’re nice about it, obviously. They don’t exactly default to Nice and Polite. Which I love, I love that they are mean and they do burn bridges and run the place with a heel on everyone’s throat. 

Lights Out - Danity Kane

Personally, I think this is the one of the most underrated girl groups and it’s such a shame because they have some great songs. Like this one, aah!! It’s a little raunchy, I’m sorry, but I’m going to interpret it for it being about the duality of someone lol. All of these girls are different! Obviously! Ashley is super harsh with a silver tongue, but she’s also sort of soft around Roo and, of course, her girls. I don’t know how she will be to her baby, but I’m excited to see!! Then we have Ashleigh who the lyrics can have a more literal meaning for, talking about having a dark side when the lights go out. Literally haunting people’s dreams as opposed to what she presents to be in regular life. Ashlee is different since she isn’t like the other Ashley’s, she is not necessarily going to bully people just for the fun of it. Ashlé has her different side of having the gossip blog and stirring up drama with it, even if that means having to talk about her friends, too. (And yes, maybe I do imagine her at her computer with the lights out looking at all the mail roll in like an internet troll lol, but she does it with poise and in good taste).

Again, a song about how women don’t have to be a certain type of way in order to simply exist. They can just be who they are and that is enough. And I think that, to one another, they are a reminder of that fact. To have surrounded themselves with these girls and to have that support group for one another but to also have three other complex, intelligent, and capable individuals that they can look at to see that women are great! There shouldn’t be any shame in being one just because society has given them those standards. 

You Gotta Be - Des’ree

Another iconic song, and this one is about finding yourself. All these chickies have graduated and are about to get out of the world of Swynlake Secondary and into the bigger one beyond it. They’re growing up! Time is coming for them, I mean Ashley is going to be a mother pretty soon!! I don’t know what the future holds for the four of them, but they’re going to be figuring it out! Hopefully together, because I love reading all of their interactions, but who knows! The world of university and adulthood could give them a different outlook on their lives....or they could just become adult versions of their high school selves without changing at all! 

Promise - MUNA

I know a lot of the songs on this album are more positive and me praising them, but I also thought this song was good to throw in because they have caused pain and humiliation to others through their actions. Which, as characters, I really admire because we love a good antagonist. Love the drama, intrigue, conflict. This song is about causing harm and not being able to stop for one reason or another, which I think can be applied to all of them since they do cause damage to others. 

Do It - Spice Girls

Of course we had to include the Spice Girls, I feel like it would be blasphemous to not. It’s just about sticking it to the man and Doing It! I think that’s a lot of what the Ashley’s are about. They don’t pay attention to the rules and instead write their own. They held their very own prom because they didn’t like the schools prom, like that’s just iconic behavior. Even in their individual lives, they’re achieving their own goals. Whether that’s defying their mother, haunting people, dancing, or spreading rumors, they’re out their living their best and not really letting anything hold them back from getting what they want.
