The other way around I don't know. Near has never struck me as a particularly envious person, but how much of that is specifically because his upbringing VS his goals VS his skills VS his life circumstances all align fairly well, and therefore he doesn't really have any particular reason to be envious of someone else… and how much of that is just his personality? Like, within canon circumstances, if his and Mello's rankings at Wammy's had been reversed, I don't think he would've been jealous of Mello, imo he's just not built that way; so what would it take for him to be jealous of Mello…? Probably some kind of AU and/or postcanon developments honestly, I am rotating this in my mind and not coming up with an answer!!! (Except the super sad post-canon version where he gets very depressed and is jealous that Mello got to die and be done with life, while he still has to keep trucking on when being alive is the world's worst chore, lmao sorry for the angst but °v°"""")

33- What’s something they’d find surprising about each other? Disclaimer: this is about to be PURE headcanon land. In the universe I have just conjured up in my mind where Mello somehow lives and they eventually get all domestic together after solving the Kira case,

Mello (perhaps projecting a little) initially assumed Near doesn't sleep much, and is so bamboozled to discover Near actually getting his 9-10 hours every night and being soooo grumpy when he doesn't!!! (< guys who is insanely sleep-deprived today and totally also projecting onto the blorbos. If I can't have a good night's sleep, well, at least Near can have a good night's sleep!!!!!!)

What would most surprise Near about Mello is less of a one-time thing and more of a long-term development, wherein Mello gets gradually chiller about their rivalry / loses the inferiority complex -- Near doesn't really register that at first, because it's subtle, and he's so used to that being an inherent part of his relationship with Mello that he keeps adjusting for it without thinking about it / noticing it's no longer all that necessary to preserve Mello's ego. But one day he reevaluates and he's like, hold on, what? AND!!!!!! Also. Early on, he'd be surprised by how well Mello can cook (Mello would NOT stoop to eating like, instant ramen without even a single homemade thing on the side, unless deeply forced by circumstances. He has food standards about 75% higher than the average person's.) because those skills sure aren't something Mello picked up from the Wammy's upbringing!!

Okay another thought! While working on the Trial 2 MVs, you think the prisoners get to watch everyone's first MVs? Like, maybe praise how each video looks ("Oh my gosh, Amane you look amazing!"), making comments with Jackalope's artistic choices (Shidou's flower mummy) and how stiff some of the prisoners look ("Fuuta you're walking like a tinman." "Shut up!"), some singing along to songs they've overheard earlier (Kotoko singing Weakness), and...er...shirtless Mikoto ("Amane don't look!"). Idk, this makes their filming for the next MVs sound more fun as they hang out.

Okay so my original idea was that those first videos were actually watched on the down-low. There were a few days of nothing going on while the prisoners debriefed, made plans, and communicated their song ideas to the writers to start working with. (Minor detail but I think they’re cut off from the world still, no internet access though they can exchange a few messages/visits with family). They do, however, get access to the others’ T1 videos on their phones/ facility computers. Everyone gave permission to watch them, but there’s a bit of hesitancy. They haven’t started filming their new videos yet, so no one has gotten a look that deep into anyone else’s hearts. Just because they’re closer in this au doesn’t make them better communicators -- there’s still a lot that’s been left unsaid regarding near-murders and their true selves. So they only watch them in secret out of respect.

Haruka hides under the covers to watch After Pain on loop late into the night (going “she’s just like me fr”). Fuuta doesn’t care much for the others’ songs but tries to decipher the crimes as best as he can. He probably gets one stuck in his head the next few days that he finds really embarrassing. Mahiru gets very emotional over the other lovers, doing a poor job of hiding her sympathy toward Yuno, Shidou, and Kazui in the following days. Kazui is embarrassed to watch Throw Down so often, but Shidou is such a subtle man and it’s nice to see a more open side to him (who admits to lying as well). Amane takes a while to watch them -- they’re videos supporting murder and sin, after all -- but once she convinces herself it’s to help the experiment, she allows herself to enjoy  them. Kotoko does the same as Fuuta but jumps straight into Fandom Mode and starts taking notes and analyzing the others’ videos. She keeps a secret folder on her phone of theories and symbolism and screenshots for reference. 

HOWEVER

You have opened my eyes to Milgram Movie Night 👁️👁️

Everyone realizes they’re going to need to get comfortable with a lot of personal info really quickly, since T2 filming starts in a few days. Rather than Jackalope’s suggestion of undergoing a painful group circle talk, they go with Mikoto’s idea to all sit down to watch the videos together. This keeps the atmosphere up while they watch, allowing for many compliments and encouragement. It also lets the singer defend things in their video if they see fit, though most let it speak for itself. (Fuuta: “ah, back when I was a menace online.” “You’re still like that Fuuta.” “I’m a changed man!” “You got one guilty verdict and nothing’s even happened yet.”)

I love all of those reactions so much ahhhh! Amane getting showered in compliments like she deserves. Honestly, all of them getting showered in complements because it's what they deserve ;-; Playful teasing getting thrown around for everyone. Not even Jackalope is safe from their heckling (see: Throw Down flower person), and he's not even there to defend himself. There’s lots of blushing and eye covering during MeMe. And a singalong aspect!! I don’t know I didn’t think to incorporate that into the fic so far -- there’s nothing quite like heckling your friend onstage by echoing their lines really loud from the wings asdfsdfsd. Mikoto recognizes the video game from Fuuta’s and makes his whole day. Mahiru and Shidou realize they have both flowers and food in common, and get to talking. All at once, everything clicks into place for why Amane hated Shidou him so much.

I'm also realizing Kazui would have a Moment TM while seeing all the prisoners talking so comfortably about their deepest selves and struggles. I don't think he'd break down and open up just yet, but I bet it's be a pretty big change of heart for him to see such honesty/vulnerability...

Plus, most of my original ideas can still stand after the fact! There's no shame in seeing too much personal info about another prisoner, the only shame comes from just how many time the video was looped in private lmao

     So it's a pretty slow-going night for collecting star fragments, as it turns out.

     Which is totally fine! Really! They can't all be winners — and it gives Tulin all the more time to get Link caught up on everything that's happened to the flock while he was away!

     But. Well.

     Even in knowing this, the disappointment that ruffles his feathers is a hard thing to ignore. It's been too long since they'd last hung out like this, both ( mostly Link ) too busy with their own dedications and responsibilities ( mostly Link ) to find the chance to have fun just for the sake of having fun, and now the fun's not even gonna have the decency to start when they're all prepped for it to?

     Go figure.

     He chatters on some more 'bout the ( thankfully harmless but very hilarious all the same ) explosion Molli accidentally ignited on Master Revali's Landing the other day, continuing to try pacing his restlessness out along the deck of the Stormwind Ark near where Link's seated himself, before eventually flumping down beside him with a sigh he can't quite keep locked behind his beak. He lolls back 'til his head's on the hero's shoulder, semiplumes squished up 'gainst Link's ear and cheek.

     "Sorry it's so boring up here," he says, feeling ridiculous for it a second later 'cause it's not like Tulin has any sorta control over when and where stars fall. It still feels like it's kinda his fault for how things are going, though — they were s'pposed to be in Necluda's skies tonight ( they were s'pposed to be there two moon phasings ago, actually, but who's counting ) as per their routine, but his brother had arrived at their peaks real tired and Tulin hadn't wanted to push him into being, like, dead-tired. Even if Link insisted otherwise.

     The shoulder beneath his head rises and dips in what he's fairly sure is probably a snicker. Tulin turns then, playfully offended squawk already building up in his chest, 'cept Link isn't actually laughing at him.

     Oh.

     Feathers puffing with a delighted, tickling warmth, Tulin feels the joy that always sweeps over him when Link's being real nice like this all the way down to the tips of his talons. To all the tiniest spaces between his bones! They're flock and nest, 'course, so this isn't the first time he's been told something along these lines, but the love that radiates from that quiet smile and those assured signs just seems— heavier. Fuller. Link's-talking-'bout-more-than-right-here-and-now-er. It's seriously hard to resist bowling him over with a hug in the face of it.

     Tulin's getting better at not immediately ruining a peaceful moment when he sees one though, and that tends to require a more delicate touch. ( Or, uh, as delicate a touch as he can manage. )

     "That makes two of us!" he laughs, beaming with barely contained giddiness and nudging at Link with a wing. Then, y'know what, he gives the night sky around them one last look, scoots closer, and plops the back of his head right down onto his brother's lap. If the stars remained still for whatever time they have left before they gotta go, Tulin decides he wouldn't mind it if it meant being together like this just a while longer. "I'm glad you're here, too!"

I was so incredibly blown away by the order I received from @die-rosastrasse!! The package was so beautifully put together and smelled like roses, and so much love and care and thought went into it- I was so touched by all the extra things she added to my order as well! 🥺 And the order came very quickly- the same day I was about to mail out my letters to my Jane Austen group penpals, and I gleefully decorated and packed their envelopes with what I just received (and added a few of my own stickers). genesis and sephiroth “fighting” and hurting each other (nothing serious just small scrapes and stuff) just to homoerotically tend to each others wounds afterwards, calling each other dumb and other small childish insults while doing it (mainly genesis but sephiroth chimes in sometimes too), but they’re both awful at any form of first aid so angeal has to step in and actually patch them up. he used to scold them for it but he has since given up, now he can do nothing but sigh and shake his head at his stupid boyfriends antics while covering them in cute chocobo and cactuar print bandages and kissing their little wounds to make them feel better. genesis and sephiroth always try to do the same for angeal when he gets roped into their “fights”, and while the gesture is sweet and its the thought that counts, they fail miserably every time at the first aid and get into petty little “arguments” on who gets to kiss angeals wounds better
