As far as the rake goes, I have an idea for Habit (Davey Jones) and an Idea for Slender (The Kraken) but im entirely lost on what to make the rake (I was thinking somewhere in the realm of a famously dangerous ship, like the black pearl from pirates of a carribean? but idk!! if anyone has suggestion please feel free to give!!)

And finds out only when she is terrified and freezes hornets come sits on her?

The annual Summer Festival is Shin's favorite thing in the world. Every year, he would wait for winter to end and for spring and summer to come and for his bug friends to come out and play.

He'd rush outside, ignoring his mother's shouts of be careful!, with an encyclopaedia of bugs and insects in his hands. He'd spent the whole day locating bugs to identify and match in his book. He wouldn't even return home until his mom yells at him for dinner time.

When he was older, his uncle took him to his first Summer Festival where he had stumbled upon a stall that sold all kinds of rare and exotic bugs and insects.

That's when he had heard a high pitch coo at a plastic box that had lady bugs indifferent colors. Her two front teeth were missing, there was pink cotton candy stuck in her hair and a yellow ballon in her hand. To Shino, she was as cute as a Pavon butterfly.

"Hi." He had awkwardly greeted her, "Do you know why ladybugs are colorful?"

She owlishly blinked at him, "Why?"

Surprised she even responded to his question since a lot of people didn't care about bugs and insects, a wide grin broke and he rushed to answer, "It's their way of tell predators: Eat something else! I taste terrible!"

He was shocked to hear her giggle, felt a weird feeling in his tummy and almost became worried when his neck felt warm.

"You're funny." She giggled at him. "I'm Y/N!"

And that was the start of a beautiful friendship. The two have been stuck to the hip ever since that evening. And when they went to the Shinobi Academy, they were ecstatic to know that they were in the same class. And even though they weren't on the same team, that didn't stop the two from being close friends.

Naturally, as they grew older, so did their emotions. Long gone were the platonic emotion they felt with each other and a seed of romantic emotions was planted in its place which blossomed into a beautiful tree.

However, Shino had been noticing lately that Y/N had been growing distant from him, especially when he became more comfortable and had a better control of his creepy crawlies. He first assumed because they were preoccupied with the post Pein invasion but even when things calmed down after that, Shino grew concerned.

It wasn't until he had dropped a visit to her house and her father opened the door with a cheerful smile, happy to see him, and they both heard a terrible scream coming from upstairs, did Shino understand why Y/N had been avoiding him.

When he had barged into her room, he was greeted with the sight of Y/N, frozen like a statue, as a giant wasp was buzzing around in her room. Tears were streaming down her cheeks and her body trembled in fear.

With a simple chakra control, Shino forced the wasp to leave the room. He quickly closed the window and gently held Y/N's shoulders.

"Hey." He softly called to her, making her lock gazes with his, "You okay?"

When she shook her head no, he carefully pulled her towards her bed and sat her down. He reached out and held her hand in his hand, his thumb gently rubbing her knuckle.

"I'm sorry." She whispered after a while, when she had calmed down enough to speak. "I...I've been." She swallows thickly. "I don't like bugs." She confesses quietly, scared to see his reaction.

Shino doesn't react the way Y/N thought he would, instead, he wrapped his arm around her and pulled her closer. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"I...I didn't want to make you mad." She confessed. "I'm okay with small bugs but, you started getting more bugs and insects, bigger ones, and-" A harsh shiver wracked her body and Shino pulls her closer.

"I can put them away." Shino said softly. "If they bother you."

Y/N pulled away from the warm embrace to stare at him in bewilderment. "Won't they die?"

Shino shook his head. "Not if I store them in boxes or rooms filled with my chakra."

"You...You'd do that for me?" She asks with wide, surprised eyes.

"I would." He nods his head seriously.

"But why?"

At that, Shino smiles brightly at her. "Because I love you, silly." And leans in for a loving kiss.

"Thank." She mutters against his lips and Shino pecks her once, then twice.

"Come on, let's go get some ice cream." He held his hand out for her. When she doesn't grab it like he thought she would, he adds, "I'll tell the big scary bugs to go away."

With that, she clasps her hand with his and follows him to the ice cream shop next to the park.

I was quite bored in those first few chapters, whenever Tharkay didn’t have page time. how could you make this incredible spectacular shitshow boring. it should have been easy comedy gold and not just like. misery. oh well great times, let’s return to the book at hand

I feel like this series is often at its most inspired when it sticks to a tighter character focus (for example I still vividly recall the part in the first book where Laurence stays in his father’s house and it’s Bad. relatedly........ F U C K lord allendale), and this brought that in spades. I love this series so much, it’s shamefully underappreciated in the speculative fiction world.

also it brought *me* to my knees with a simple “Tenzing,” [Laurence] said, which... holy shit. fuck. damn. that’s my personal recommendation of this book, tbh, even beyond my wish for this series to be more appreciated within the genre: Tharkay was there and it was very gay and non-obnoxious soulmate vibes???? I never even thought it could be done but here we are

This is probably going to be my last reaction thingy for the foreseeable future, since my local library doesn’t have book 9 and honestly... having read a few summaries of what happens in it I’m not that keen on reading it? That’s not the ending to this story I want, so I’ll just live over here in denialville, I-realize-the-author-made-the-choice-to-not-make-further-use-of-Lien-AKA-THE-coolest-antagonist-in-this-series-and-indeed-did-not-wrap-up-numerous-character-arcs-or-plot-lines-but-I-don’t-like-this-choice-so-I’ll-ignore-it

(actually I do sort of appreciate the idea of not having one grand final duel or something, because that’s not how it usually works in real life, but that she’d just shrug and not mercilessly hunt for the revenge she’s so clearly motivated by when everything she loves is falling apart around her again... that’s too much of a letdown to bear, really)

let me just... live in willful ignorance and pretend anything could happen from this point onward haha.

I was wandering around queens garden and saw a big statue of the pale king in the background by one of the benches and idk I was just wondering if the king made any structures there or something. And I know thk grew up in the palace but it would’ve been really nice if they got to see the queens garden

it really would have!!!! i’ve seen a lot of fics where it’s posited that the queen’s garden happened when the pale king and the white lady had a pseudo-divorce and she holed herself up in the queen’s gardens, but iirc that’s not confirmed by canon, so it really could just have been that was the queen’s domain while they were raising thk. that would be super nice honestly

A Watcher’s Duty is a really cute and fun fic. Great for baby Hornet and Hollow shenanigans, and characterizing Lurien.

Come And Sit A While is also very sweet. Herrah adopting Hollow is too cute! There’s others in this series as well, but not all fluff!

First Time is, oh goodness, so sweet. It’s all about Ghost learning to be social and what it means to love people and have friends and family! I’m going to cry soft tears just thinking of it.

Wintertime Woes is cute and silly. Snow! Presents! Thievery! Hornet is very nervous about this whole winter thing, poor gal.

Drama:

Refuse and Regret so if you want to see some shaking up post-Godseeker endings, here’s a good’un. Hollow and Grimmchild also have the promising start to a friendship here!

...Father?... is some good stuff for Hollow’s early days. This fic does not back down on the trouble escalation.

a new soul in this very strange world is a one-shot, not too super long, involving Hornet after Herrah begins to Dream. More baby Hornet which is always a plus in my book!

Of Wyrms And Regret gets into an AU where the Pale King decides to solve things himself. Aaaaand proceeds to fuck himself up some. Oops.

This Little Light Of Ours is like, you know that fic trope where a character gets poofed into a baby? That with PK, courtesy of Void shenanigans. If you want to lean in to Hornet’s heritage as a demigod, this writer’s got you covered.

The Only Option is incomplete, but there’s so much so far. Holy cripes. There’s some OCs, but they’re more on the sideline. I love the character interactions.

One Step Back is post-Godseeker, with Ghost trying to get their little Vessel form back! Unfortunately they do so by possessing Quirrel. Sorry, Quirrel!

The Knight In The Pale Ore Mask is a human AU that’s just getting started, but oh man am I looking forward to where the plot goes! If you like your PK crueler and your Vessels cute as can be, this is great.

It’s All Well Above Wonder Anyways is another newer fic, but I am enjoying its premise of time travel and the siblings having to run around and fix everything back before Hollow was sealed.

Hurt/Comfort:

(mind me, my definition here is fairly vague and wobbly)

Off Balance has a teenage Hollow being taken in as the Pale King and White Lady’s child instead of a weapon. They’re slowly relearning how to navigate their relationships, and of course, there’s the aftermath of the Vessel plan and the lack of a new fix for the infection to deal with...

An Impure Vessel is a nice blend of slice-of-life and hurt/comfort. The Radiance finds new worshipers, so technically Hollow doesn’t have to be, well, hollow. Everyone has to adjust to that. (And again, baby Hornet!)

Nos Morituri is probably like, the one not Pale Court-related one here, oops. This is on the crunchier side of hurt/comfort, some good ol’ recovery fic with God Tamer and Tiso. I cannot stop thinking of God Tamer’s buddy as Orisio now.

Not Too Late For Second Chances is on the slightly goofy side in spots, in a fun way. I never knew I needed Babiance in my life until I read this! Grimm is great fun as well, and the siblings have such a sweet relationship. (Ghost is too cute.)

the darkness carried you home to me is for like, when you mean hurt/comfort. Hearing about what happens in this fic grossed out my EMT friend. Which, IMO, is a crowning endorsement. But hey! There’s an attempt to fix the wounds and it gets soft there at the end!

Generally like, any of the authors for these fics, I’d recommend looking at their other works as well. And look at shorter fics as well; I personally tend towards longer stuff, and this isn’t everything I’ve read and enjoyed. Read widely!
