what is the relationship between dabi and tomura outside of y/n world?

great question!!! so much of this world exists just inside of my head + in my notebooks n sometimes i forget that you guys don’t have access to those and that i haven’t actually acknowledged these things ehehehe. okay, so in their organization, dabi’s fairly high up—honestly like, i’d even go as far to say that he’s essentially one of tomura’s right-hand men. to quote myself from a previous ask:

dabi, on the other hand, is their man on the street (ik i haven’t explained this yet, but dabi basically rules the streets, if there was a hierarchy for the dirty work the company does in the underworld + on the streets dabi would be right at the top. he’s the man in charge and had his own band of thugs etc etc, but that was before he was demoted to babysitting the reader of course!!)

so, because of this ^^ dabi has a bit more leeway than most of the people who work under tomura. the work dabi was doing on the streets wasn’t easy, nor was it pleasant, and tomura really does value him as a trusted uhhhh ‘employee’. he was, in the beginning at least, the person tomura trusted most. obviously, that trust will start to crumble as the story advances, but at the time of the inciting incident and when tomura needed someone to guard the most precious thing in his life, dabi was one of the prime candidates.

dabi definitely does give tomura more attitude than a regular employee would, and that’s definitely increased and become a little bolder since his realization that he loves reader, but he is still fairly careful with what he says and does. for example, at the end of bmb pt 2 when tomura goes to lunge for the reader and dabi catches his wrist, he also drops it just as fast at a mere glance from his boss. dabi still avoids his superior’s eyes the moment he enters the penthouse after the kiss, and in pt 1, dabi still does what he’s told and apologizes to the reader. heck in part one tomura deadass decks the dude in the face and dabi just takes it because (not only does he deserve it but) that’s his mf boss, and he has no choice. he knows fighting back equals an instant death sentence. tomura still has all of that power and still instills fear in dabi (tho ovb dabi would never admit this lmao). dabi’s attitude is more than anything just a part of who he is as a character, but he knows tomura’s limits—he knows what he can get away with and what he can’t, and he is still, for the most part, cautious of what he says (for now, at least!!!).

YES okay i had a similar question about tomura noticing dabi’s attraction to reader a long long loooong time ago, and there are a few reasons why he hasn’t exactly done anything about it yet. the first, is that he truly doesn’t want to believe that there’s something budding there. he’s been throwing himself into his work to avoid having to deal with that potential, because it’s just too painful for him to think about. he doesn’t want it to be true, so he’s kind of coping by ignoring everything.

the second reason is that, obviously, dabi is still the best person to be protecting his baby. as much as he wishes it weren’t true, he can’t lie to himself, and dabi having feelings for the reader only makes this more true, because now he’s even more protective of her, actually cares about her and her well-being etc.

Having a day off was nice. Between the intense classes, internships, and overall stress of living at UA, having the day to relax was a good change of pace. Most of the hero course students were either using the time to study or train or research their projects. You were right there with them, studying team tactics and battle patterns. It wasn’t really your definition of fun, but you knew that it was the area you needed the most work in. Especially since UA was encouraging it’s future heroes to work together, really bringing the whole “era of the solo hero is over” thing home. 

 After a few hours of memorizing team building and combo attacks, you wanted to walk around and catch up with some of your classmates. So, you headed off to the gym where some of them were. Yayozoru was working on her hand-to-hand combat with Uraraka. Not surprising, you thought to yourself. She would focus on her weakest aspect and continue to try to round herself out, Momo really was such an inspiration. Maybe you should practice too. You waved to her and kept walking. The gym was full of the sound of laughter and yelling. You were almost surprised to see most of 1-A here. They were already pretty combat heavy, maybe they were trying to work out coordination tactics too. 

Kirishima, aka Red Riot, was being a test dummy for some new attack that Blasty McSplode had learned. You couldn’t drop the nickname after you heard it. It just fit too well. He kept yelling about something. You saw Kaminari laughing at the spectacle. He had the best laugh, you couldn’t help but giggle a bit with him. 

“Hey Denki” you called out, waving to him. He looked over and had to do a double take, registering who it was walking towards him. He looked over to Aishido, who gave him an encouraging shove. You reached out to stop his stumble and then it happened. 

He sparked out after getting so close to you. It felt like you has just shocked yourself after shuffling on carpet with socks on. He dropped to the ground and you blinked at him. The gym was silent. You had a payback quirk, damage dealt would be sent back in equal force, you tapped your foot and a large crack went through the clay floor. He was all zapped out, and knowing how he could be afterwards you reached out to him. 

“Hey are you okay? Denki?” You were cupping his face, trying to see if he really fried his brain this time, “Kaminari?”

He came to, his recoup time had gotten a lot shorter, thanks to his internship you were sure. He rubbed his eyes and looked up at you. 

“Y-Y/N” he stuttered, turning all sorts of red, “hey how’s it going?”

“Uh alright I guess, are you alright,” you reached out and grabbed his cheek, turning his head, “I think you hit your head” 

You leaned in to inspect the growing lump and he looked like he was going to explode.

“I’m alright, really Y/N” He scooted back, still sitting on the ground. He was six shades of red, you had gotten so close. He could smell your conditioner, a fruity light scent. Gods he was so head over heels for you. Telling himself to be cool, that people were watching, he stood up and dusted off his butt. “See? Just fine!”

Kaminari laughed and rubbed the back of his head. You sighed and walked closer to him.

“If you’re sure then okay,” he was just enough taller than you that you had to look up at him just a bit, “So, what were you working on?”

You were close again. He felt his heart pounding out of his chest He started to speak and then zaaap. He was out again. And you were absorbing the blow, again. The floor was going to look like Cemetoss himself had a fit. You kept helping up and making him flustered. Eventually you had to take him to Recovery Girl. Who knew that static-ing himself so much was like having a nose-bleed? Or maybe it was the actual nose-bleed he got when he fell onto your chest. 

When he woke up in the nurse’s office, he saw you sitting next to his bed. Back to studying but by his side. You were going to kill him. He was sure of it. You looked so pretty, chewing on the end of your pencil, eyebrows furrowed in focus, knee bouncing. Your hair was still his favorite, the way it framed your face just made his heart flutter. Natural and impressive, just like the rest of you. 

“Hey Y/N” he whispered, almost afraid to speak. You turned your head and dropped your textbook and notes. 

“Denki!” You were leaning onto the bed. Hugging him. Yep he was going to die. “I was so worried! You should have more control of your quirk by now, Recovery Girl was worried that you might’ve caught some retrovirus or something and that it was-”

He just started laughing and hugged you back, grateful that his quirk was spent.

“You just kept getting closer,” he pushed you back a bit “you just really make me lose it”

You stared at him. What was he saying now? You  couldn’t believe it. Sweet, funny, charming Kaminari Denki was saying you made him nervous. He was always so confident when you saw him in the feild or at lunch or in the dorms. Yeah you two had been texting everyday but you thought he was just being nice.

“Hey, Y/N,” he tapped your forehead, “wanna go get lunch? I’m pretty hungry”

“Absolutely.”
