"hi," peter sits beside you, hands on his lap and a smile on his face. a smile that's too bright, too excited for your liking that he looks like soulless psychopath.

you chuckle nervously, not because he's sitting near you because goddamn, his smile is actually fucking creepy. "hey, parker."

mj sits beside you, taking her phone out of her pocket. "hey, y/n."

"is he okay?" you scratch your head. "is he drugged or something? he looks like those dudes in that one lucy hale movie."

ned takes a bite of his apple. "truth or dare?"

"oh! yeah right," you glance at peter through your peripheral. still with a smile, though with much more intense eyes. "ned i'm begging for help."

mj slaps her hands on her thighs and stands up, the neutral look on her face etches up to what is something she's excited about. "i've an announcement," she booms. ned takes her spot beside you, plopping down on the couch and nudging his shoulder with yours.

and for the first time in forever you're actually happy peter's not looking at you anymore.

because he stands up, wiping his hands nervously on his thighs just like mj did and stands beside her. and it really does feel like they might be fucking with you because he held her hand and smiled lovingly at her like they're about to tell you they're engaged halfway through college.

your face falls even as theirs had risen as they prepare for the imminent announcement for something you're sure will leave you crying your heart out to every taylor swift song possible. and you wish you'd switch minds with ned because he looks excited and curious as to what their announcement is rather than dwell on the unfathomable.

peter's eyes flit between ned's and yours. you can see the thumb that's brushing with mj's, and the excited foot tapping only a child (+ peter parker) would do.

"we broke up!"

and your face falls into a slot of confusion, breath hitching as does ned's as his apple drops to the ground. the soft thudding of a fruit colliding with the carpeted floor is what paints the words of their announcement on a big banner that ties itself around your brain.

you didn't expect yourself to be confused about their breakup. you prepared yourself for the ambivalence between happiness and pity when this day would come, but maybe it's because they said it with wide smiles like they'd just announced their getting married.

"what?"

the simultaneous exclamation shouted by you and ned takes them aback. peter drops mj's hand, face turning into a much different confusion, like he's wondering why you're not happy with their split.

"we broke up," he says softly, dazed. mj tugs on her ear. "what's wrong about that?"

"why are you both so happy?" you ask them. "oh my god, mj! does mom know about this?"

"oh, she knows all of it," she scoffs. "we weren't really together."

you're now really convinced you're being fucked with. "i'm gonna hit you both in the head with an apple."

"but we did it because of you," peter's desperate now, because he's expected your approval. "i mean, i had to kiss mj. for you!"

"how is that supposed to make me feel better?!"

"because we were trying to make you, like, jealous."

this feels like a fever dream.

a ridiculous, too insane to be real, fever dream. because peter looks like an upset puppy and mj's trying to look like she's trying to stop her laughter. you try to look closely and see if their pupils had widened to the point their eyes had turned black.

but they're normal. and you're mad and confused. you kick peter's leg. "you assholes!"

ned stands up from the couch, picking the apple off the carpet and frowns at the lint sticking on his fruit. "i was in it, by the way," he looks at you. "told me not to tell you and god i half expected them to like each other halfway but all they did was gag and whine like they're some disease to each other."

you look back at peter, who's scratching the back of his head. "'s that real?"

"yeah," he murmurs. "hella real."

and maybe, when he says he'd done it for you, it's like he's painted his confession on his forehead just to make it clear that he likes you.
