On the surface Franziska going along with the murder accusation of Miles seems like a way for her to have fun tormenting him a little bit like siblings do but this little exchange hints at a deeper and more serious reason.
We know very little of how Franziska reacted to the news of her father being a murderer and she rarely gives insights into how she feels about it in general but there's no question that she must've taken it pretty hard given just how much she looks up to and admires him. I don't think she would've ever thought he'd be capable of murder. The same is probably true for her opinion of Miles but she's already been mistaken once about a person so close to her so it's understandable that she'd want to make sure it doesn't happen again. If there's any doubt about Miles or someone else she cares about being a murderer, she takes that accusation seriously. I think the way she speaks about being related by blood and Miles' reaction make it quite clear that they're both thinking about Manfred in this moment and that Miles understands why Franziska is so harsh on him here.
On a lighter note, this exchange also emphasizes how much they see each other as siblings! Gumshoe calls them "like siblings" which he should know considering how well he knows both of them and Franziska doesn't disagree, even implying that Miles is as much family to her as Manfred is just without the blood relationship. Love that! Miles' and Franziska's sibling relationship is so precious!

Fun fact! This was the real tipping point that made Edgeworth run away after AA1, they just couldn't show it on screen because they didn't have the rights to Chappell Roan's music <3
(A spiritual successor to my "Hot to Go" joke from this post. Image description under the cut below)
[Image ID: a four page black and white comic of characters from ace attorney.
The Judge stands solemnly at his podium holding a gavel "Mr. Miles Edgeworth, you are on trial for the murder of blah blah blah..."
A cheerful Maya Fey leans over to Miles Edgeworth, who is staring straight ahead and looking very concerned
Maya: "Psst! Mr. Edgeworth! If you win your trial, can I show you Chappell Roan?
Miles: "What the hell, sure." Internally he thinks "Oh God I am going to jail"
A box saying "later" in the top corner of the next panel marks the passage of time.
The Judge smiles as he says "I declare you... Not Guilty!"
We see a full body shot of Maya dancing excitedly while Miles looks on, emotionless
Maya: YIPPEE omg you're going to LOVE this
Miles internally thinks "oh no, the consequences of my actions.
We see Miles standing in between Phoenix Wright and Maya looking apprehensive. Maya beams in excitement, while Nick puts a reassuring hand on Miles' shoulder
Miles: Alright, so what is this exactly?
Nick: She's a pop musician Maya really likes
Maya: You promised you'd let me show you, and it's legally binding because you said it in a court room!
Miles: That is not how the law works Ms. Fey
Maya: Shh just listen!
We see a panel of Miles' pensive face concentrating as he listens to "Hot to Go". He thinks to himself "hm".
Another panel zoomed in more. His pensive expression has grown more tense/confused as he listens to "Red Wine Supernova". he again thinks to himself "Hm" in a larger thought bubble.
We zoom out again to see Nick, Miles, and Maya standing together again. Miles stares forward blankly, eyebrows raised. Maya excitedly leans in.
Maya: Ok, that's her whole discography. So! What did you think?
Nick looks at him, waiting for his response
We get a panel of Miles, looking bewildered. He starts to speak "I..."
We cut again to see the three of them standing together.
Miles: I... don't think I like women?
Miles looks shocked and confused. Nick is bent over laughing, using a hand on Miles's shoulder to support himself. Maya looks outraged and appalled!
Maya: MR. EDGEWORTH! Just because you don' like her musi it doesn't give you an excuse to be sexist!
We see a panel of Miles looking stressed and confused. He leans his head on one of his hands, which messes up his hair, showing how he isn't his normal put together self.
Miles: I should rephrase that. What I mean is, Ms. Roan is clearly VERY assured in her feelings towards women. I was... unaware that anyone felt that strongly. I thought we all viewed these things with a vague sense of distaste and unease but collectively ignored it. Like how we do with climate change.
We zoom out again to see the three of them. Miles stands in the middle looking deeply uncomfortable and lost in thought, vibrating with unease. Nick and Maya exchange deeply concerned glances across from him.
With lingering unease, Miles begins to walk away.
Miles: Well, I should be going then. Goodnight.
Nick hesitantly raises a finger to point out an inaccuracy in that statement
Nick: It's four in the afternoon-
he gets interrupted by Miles who repeats firmly: I said Goodnight
Nick looks in the direction Miles walked off in.
Nick: ...He'll be ok, right?
Maya reassures him: Of cours Nick! I mean, what's the worst that can happen?
Jump cut to a closeup of Nick's hand holding Miles' letter which reads Miles Edgeworth chooses death in all caps. Then, below in smaller font, it says Also femininomenon was really good, thanks.
We see a panel of Nick glaring wordlessly at Maya as he holds the letter in his hand. Maya leans against the wall and looks away, whistling, trying to look innocent to avoid blame.
As a bonus, we also have a page that takes place a year later. Miles and Nick stand talking. Miles looks calmer now, and Nick smiles encouragingly.
Miles: In my time in Europe, I've been examining myself and my approach to law. Ultimately, the most important focus must be justice. We owe it to ourselves and to the people we serve
Nick: Wow, that's really inspiring Edgeworth. And, uh, hows the... the other thing going?
We get a zoomed in panel of Miles glaring menacingly at a suddenly nervous Nick
Jumping out again, Miles turns his back to Nick as he continues to talk
Miles: So as I was saying, justice is truly so important...
Nick nervously rubs the back of his neck wearing an awkward expression as he sweats nervously. He thinks to himself internally "Ooookay then, clearly still working through some things there"
/.End ID]
#Miles can handle horrifying truths about the death of his father and the nature of his guardian#but he draws the line at questioning his sexuality!#also. serious moment for a second#I think we focus a lot on moments of queer discovery stemming from attraction to the same sex#like that being the moment of panicked “oh no I'm different”. Which makes sense and is valid!#But I think it's also compelling to explore the opposite but similar twist in your gut that is:#oh my god I don't feel anything in this situation where others do. oh no something something is wrong with me#and this is something that gay and lesbian people have in common with ace and aro people!#I feel such tenderness and kinship to everyone who has been in that situation#and it's why i will never understand why aspec folks are pitted against gay or lesbian representation#we are drawn to the same characters bc we had such similar experiences and isn't that lovely that we can find solace in media?#so NO FIGHTING. We should all be BEST FRIENDS. my brothers in arms. I'd die for you.#all that is to SAY: I personally read edgeworth as asexual and like demiromantic/gay.#but YOU can read him as just gay in this comic if you want <3#Also. i just thought it would be funny if it took a lesbian to make him realize he didn't like women#I think he would have no clue how to react to chappell roan. Same vibe as giving a victorian orphan a baja blast and a crunchwrap supreme#ok sorry shutting up now#ace attorney#ace attorney comic#ace attorney trilogy#gyakuten saiban#phoenix wright#naruhodo ryuichi#miles edgeworth#mitsurugi reiji#maya fey#ayasato mayoi#my art

in the trilogy, character pairs were a lot of the time set in bringing someone back from the dead or generally playing with the dead and the undead and the alive. this was the case with mia/maya in aa1, mimi/ini and adrian/celeste in aa2 (edgeworth/franziska as well to a certain degree), and of course in aa3 it was iris/dahlia, but also godot/diego, and obviously there was a lot more going on but this is a recurring thing that ace attorney does. it works with the turnabout theme, reviving the dead and reviving dead cases, and it works with phoenix's literal name. that's why i think it's really cool that that doesn't happen in aa4. aa4 is a really grounded game and isn't super interested in telling these literally 'magical' stories. the feys were magic, but trucy and troupe gramarye are magicians who work with practical things, illusion and obfuscation.
of course it is implied that trucy and apollo's perception ability is magical in nature, but i don't think it is ever outright stated that it is the same way it is confirmed that the feys possess unique magical powers. and because aa4 is so grounded and so invested in telling this particular story about corruption in every meaning of the term, it does its character contrasts with characters being "moral" and being "immoral" in the sense that the lines between these two labels are very blurry.
there is the contrast of kristoph/klavier, obviously — klavier is the good one because he can accept defeat in the name of truth, because he strives to find the truth and, when he realizes that what he is pushing for is not the right thing, will stop pushing for that thing, whereas kristoph is driven by his own pride and ego. it gets more complicated when you shift your focus towards, for example, phoenix (attorney)/phoenix (father). trilogy phoenix is naive and loyal and has these searing convictions (not that apollo doesn't), but he regularly puts people on pedestals and himself in positions to be betrayed. it is difficult for him to accept that his judgement of a person might have been faulty we see this thinking in turnabout goodbyes and in farewell, my turnabout and in bridge to the turnabout.
disbarred phoenix has lost that naivete because of the sheer amount of time that has passed, yes, but also because of the breadth of the "betrayal" he suffered. we know that disbarred phoenix wright is still a "good person", but he is more willing to get his hands dirty, is more willing to lie and omit and yeah, cheat.
there is the example of lamiroir/machi, in which lamiroir is portrayed as being a very innocent and tragic figure and for a good portion of the case, we sort of believe that machi has taken advantage of her innocence to a certain degree. the main parallel is of course that of kristoph/phoenix, but i think it is so interesting how phoenix dips a hand into the same methods kristoph used with the bloody ace — a less drastic and "evil" play, yes, but one from the same book nonetheless.
back to what i said about dying cases and turnabout, that's what a lot of the trilogy cases, every single one almost, focused on. the end-message is always one of rebirth and reinvigoration — two examples so you know what i'm talking about: in turnabout goodbyes, phoenix's revelation of the truth by bringing dl-6 back from the 'dead' is what starts edgeworth's journey towards becoming a different person. in rise from the ashes, his highlighting the detective's work in bringing sl-9 back from the dead is what frees the skye sisters and allows lana to experience a "new lease on life". this repeats over and over again. these are very classic endings. but in aa4, what's highlighted is the exact oppposite: corruption.
kristoph starts off as a very cool and collected person (in the player's eyes) and his descent into paranoia and greed and egotism is revealed to us across the past and present. we see apollo start off in turnabout trump as a different person than who he becomes by the end of turnabout succession; he doesn't become a bad person, but he's been through enough that he develops a sheen of pessimism while still remaining recognizably apollo, so brash and convinced and caught in the pursuit of justice, a corruption, yes, but less drastic. i already covered the change phoenix undergoes. trucy goes from being an element of zak's tricks to conducting tricks of her own (page vs ace). lamiroir has undergone a sort of breakdown of identity. wocky's slowly dying. even the clients we defend vary so deeply from the clients of the trilogy in that their innocence is already cast in doubt when apollo defends them because they've already gotten their hands dirty or are societally deemed 'shady characters'. in the first case, the client is a disgraced and disbarred lawyer. in the second, a gangster part of a violent mob. in the third, a seemingly innocent child is revealed to be a smuggler. and of course behind it all there is the legal system, already dark and corrupt in phoenix's time, now twisted so far out of shape that it is a miracle any cases are won at all. and that's also why i think making the prosecutor apollo goes up against (klavier) be a very just person works out amazingly.
not sure how to really end this but tl;dr apollo justice is an amazing game that plays with themes in a very different way from the trilogy and i love it!

i didn’t even know edgeworth was adverse to taking pictures until the aai collection. wasn’t he chill with lotta taking a group picture in aa1 + gumshoe snapping a pic of them by the dusky bridge public phone?
Tumblr media
Bridge to the Turnabout Transcript:
Gumshoe: Hey! It's a public phone! You don't see a lot of these anymore! Edgeworth: ...That's true. Gumshoe: Since we've got one here, why don't we take a photo as a memento! Edgeworth: Well, um, sure. Why not? Gumshoe: Oh, darn it! I don't have a camera with me! ...I'm gonna go buy a disposable camera! I'll be right back, sir Edgeworth: (What's so special about public phones, and why is he so fascinated by them...?)

AA2 is such a drastic shift from AA1 in terms of like. Villains. Murderers. In AA1 they're megalomaniacs, self-assured capitalist pigs, people in power with petty motives like money and public image. In AA2 they're collected and sympathetic revenge-seekers with very real grudges and grievances, it almost feels bad to prove them guilty.

AAIC: German Translation!
This is the 13th post in the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection Countdown: 68 days left until release!
Today's topic: the German Translation!
Tumblr media
With the first official Western release for Investigations 2 in the Investigations Collection we not only get an English Localisation but also translations into German, French, Korean, Traditional and Simplified Chinese! After so many years of English-only (and sometimes not even Western) releases it's great to see that AA reached such a popularity high in recent years that they translate it into multiple languages again.
I will mainly talk about the German translation as it’s my mother tongue and the language I first played Ace Attorney in. I originally played the German releases of AJ and AA1-3 back on the DS. Apart from being translated they change nothing about the games, names and everything stays the same. So for everyone who doesn’t know, the von Karmas are still German in the German translation which was weird and kinda cool for my teenage self because it’s such a random choice of country for them to be from but I loved seeing it in a game I really enjoyed. Klavier was an even weirder case because the German translation doesn’t change the language he throws in phrases from which is why you don’t really get that part of his character in German except his quirk of calling women „Fräulein“ (which is not a word anyone really uses anymore except mothers when they scold their daughters sometimes). His name is also the only one that’s been changed because „Klavier“ is really just „piano“ in German and therefore very unfitting as a name when the entire game is in that language. (Which is also the reason why I actively pronounce his name differently than what the object is called because just calling him „piano“ feels terrible and I like the way it sounds when I pronounce it differently.) In German he’s Kantilen. Back then I only switched to playing AA in English because Investigations 1 only had an English release in the West. After that I replayed the other games in English as well because I got used to thinking of the characters talking in English and any new releases since then also being English-only reinforced it all the more.
Returning to the present, I finally get the chance to play not only Investigations 1 but also Investigations 2 in German! (DD and SoJ as well but I’m focusing on the Investigations Collection.) It’s been so long that I honestly never thought this in particular would happen, even getting Investigations 2 in English seemed like a distant dream for so long, but here we are! It’s not something that I felt I really needed, as I said I got used to playing AA in English, but now that I know I will have the option I feel weirdly giddy about it! I already mentioned in previous countdown posts that I intend to replay the entire collection immediately to get any achievements that I missed and to try out the arranged music tracks for both games so I'm also going to use this opportunity to play both games in German for the first time after doing the first playthrough in English. So excited to see what the translation is like!
I don't think I even remember what the original German voices sounded like but I look forward to hearing them again and I'm especially excited for the new ones! I hope they're fitting. And I'm curious how they'll translate the special phrases like Shi-Long's "Not so fast!" or Justine's "Overruled!". For Shi-Long's I think "Nicht so schnell!" would easily work the best, it's the 1:1 equivalent, sounds just as natural and takes the same amount of time to say. For Justine's I'm not so sure. I can really only think of "Abgelehnt!" as what a judge would say to overrule an objection but it's not as specific, you can use it for any kind of suggestion or proposal which might make her sound like a really annoying clerk in an office who won't accept your documents in triplicate 😅 On the other hand, that might fit really well in a way, Idk. For Miles' "Eureka!" it's easy again, "Heureka!" is the 1:1 equivalent here.
Looking forward to finding out!
