Day Forty-two

Having a nice hot bath, a good lie down on a soft sofa, and being fed an amazing hearty breakfast has done me wonders and I cannot express enough gratitude yet again. Typically my scatterbrain neglected to swap contact details as we were both setting off this morning, but knowing their address I can at least ensure a gushing thabk you letter once at the journey's end.

The rest will be necessary, as it's another day of heavy climbs ahead!

The rain is coming down heavily this morning, so it's fully suited up in the waterproofs to hit the busy A835 along Loch Broom.

The legs are warmed up with a few stiff climbs along the 10 mile stretch of traffic, before ascending further up to 600ft from sea level up Corrieshalloch Gorge, with the road lined with massive pine trees.

The stiff climbs begin, which are hard work with the busy traffic, but finally they're climbed up to the turnoff at Braemore Junction and a small break is taken by the visitor centre for the national park.

I can tell my mood has improved from yesterday's slog as I have a little giggle to myself at the beautiful view back down the valley I've just clambered up. It's a wonderful sight.

Heading west, it's a long further climb up past 1000ft, but with the climb stretching over several miles the gradient is at leasy bearable as the road passes above the tree line and across the moorlands.

The bubbling brooks that usually fill the area are swollen from the heavy rains and are foaming across the landscape as the summit is finally passed and a long long descent begins.

The rain has abated but is replaced with a strong headwind, as we sail all the way down the valley past rocky peaks down to Little Loch Broom at sea level once more.

I have a nice break for lunch sat overlooking the Loch, with the sun trying its best to make itself known.

It's time for more climbing though, and back up another 600ft to get over the hill at the end of the loch, which is again rewarded with some amazing views.

Around the corner of the coast we go, diving back down through some wooded areas before emerging into the stunning Gruinard Bay. Past the beach the road spikes up steeply and it's a sweaty grind up the cliffs to get to the viewpoint where the full glory of the bay makes all the effort worthwhile.

After a nice break here, it's on around the corner and more sweeping downhills on to Laide, before going straight back up again.

Whilst I've lost count of how many times my ears have popped overall on this trip, today has had them go over a dozen times so far. The amount of elevation changes for today has been quite something.

After a trek across the hill we get out to Loch Ewe, with the sun finally out and a gorgeous sight across the deep-water loch after climbing straight back up onto the hillsides once more.

Continuing around Loch Ewe, it's a pretty nice ride once high up, before a nice glide back down once more to swing by Poolewe.

it's getting on for half seven by now, and it's been a lot of distance and elevation today! A short ride past the village to the end of the bay finds me a reasonable spot of ground to pitch up for the night, with the sound of the waves against the shore to sing me to sleep.

The stars of 'The Greatest Showman' on why P.T. Barnum is still relevant today

When the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus closed its doors this past May, it marked the end of a form of live entertainment made popular by master 19th century showman P.T. Barnum. Were the ringmaster behind the circus boom to be reborn in the 21st century, though, he probably wouldn’t be fooling around with lions and tigers and bears. At least, that’s the opinion of Hugh Jackman, who plays Barnum in the new movie musical The Greatest Showman and received a Golden Globe nomination for his spirited song-and-dance routine. “If Barnum were around today, I don’t think he’d be pitching a tent somewhere,” the actor tells Yahoo Entertainment. “I think he’d be in Silicon Valley and into virtual reality. He has a way now through the internet to connect to everyone on the planet; I don’t think he’d be in theater.”

To Jackman’s mind, what made Barnum the world’s greatest showman was the way he innately understood show business. And the film follows his lead, using history as the jumping off point for a lavish, tuneful spectacle that hews to the legend, rather than the facts. In that way, The Greatest Showman is the kind of movie Barnum would likely have made about his own story had he lived to witness the birth of cinema. (The entrepreneur died in 1891, four years before the first movie theaters opened.) This film, says Jackman’s co-star Zendaya, who plays an aerialist in Barnum’s circus, “is supposed to transport us into this fantastical world where a moon can sit on a rooftop. That’s the beauty of a musical — that creativity to just go wherever your mind takes you.”

The Greatest Showman opens in theaters today.

Ukrainian Tryzub Monument, Conon Bridge.

This monument is from 1949 in the form of the Ukraine National State Emblem, called a Tryzub. 

It is close to the main A835 trunk road to the West and is on the Brahan Estate. During WW2 the site around here housed Brahan Pow Camp afterwards this became a camp for displaced persons, 

It was used firstly to house displaced persons, mainly Polish, Hungarian and Ukrainian. A lot of the refugees stayed in the area and married local girls.

Day Forty-one

The rains kept coming down and down last night. Took a while to drift off due to various aches and pains making themselves known and the rains were still going this morning on waking!

Thankfully the subsided a little after half seven to allow me to start getting on with striking camp and getting on with the day.

First up is finishing off the slog up the hill to get into the next valley, where I zoom back downhill to Badnagyle.

It's a turn westward here to head past the large Loch Osgaig, before a loop around past Achnahaird beach on to Altandhu for our first views across to the Summer Isles.

The sky is a continguous monotone of grey today, but the view still looks like something from a tropical destination, with multiple island bays and beaches stretching away.

Onwards, there's some more climbing oast a couple of smaller lochs before dropping back down past Bardentarbet Pier and on through Achiltibuie along the coastline.

Alas there's no through road past Culnacraig, so it's back up the road again all the way to Badnagyle by where the day's ride started, instead heading out east. The skies finally start to let out a steady drizzle of rain as we head onward.

The coastal loop hadn't been too heavy on the climbs but with the riad heading back inland now, it's a ling and continual ascent up and up and up the valley. The craggy mountains loom overhead to the left, and the right side droos down past the rocks to Loch Bad a' Ghaill and Loch Lurgainn.

it's a good 8 miles of long climb out along the single track road, with numerous campervans and impatient tourists making it quite a bit of work.

Finally it's out of one slog and into another, as the route exits onto the A835 towards Ullapool. The traffic picks up again, but with some better road surfaces I can at least start making some better speed.

We get some spikey hills before a run along the coastline at Ardmair, which the continuous rains put a slight dampner on the views.

The last few miles in to Ullapool are soke big steep climbs with some busy traffic which make for some very unenjoyable pushing, but finally it's a cruise back down to sea level to make it to Ullapool and the ahops to restock on supplies.

It's mid afternoon at this point and the rains show absolutely no sign of stopping. On the contrary, the forecast has them getting a good bit worse and barely letting up all day and night.

I ponder getting a cheap hostel but Ullapool is a popular stop. But a happenstance conversation with a random passer by sees me offered a sofa for the night as well as a nice hot bath! Utter luxury!

The kindness of strangers continues to be a humbling experience. I'm the cleanest I've been since leaving Inverness, and sat in a very soft sofa to let the muscles recouperate a deal before cracking at the next set of hills tomorrow. Friends who complained that I was going too fast earlier in the ride, West Scotland's hills are slowing me down nicely for you!

Sleep well all! I know I will!
