"The Mushroom Mine" sign by @shantismurf, with assistance from @tickles-ivory
As part of the celebration of the one year anniversary of the Bagginshield Book Club, we asked the lovely @chrononautintraining a few questions about this wonderful work.
June 2024 Author Q&A with Chrononautical
Q1. What name would you like us to use and what are your pronouns?
A1. Chrononautical or Chrono, She/Her
Q2. How many years have you been writing?
A2. Most of my life, but posting publicly for about 15 years.
Q3. What do you think of as your writing style - are you a plotter or pantster?
A3. Pantster, primarily, though I've learned my lessons and do like to know where a story is going to end when I start it these days so I try to plot.
Q4. What’s your favorite genre/trope to write?
A4. Speculative fiction: stories about magic or science fiction, primarily.
Q5. Is there a genre/trope you haven't written as much of yet that you're excited about for future writing?
A5. I'd like to do more comedy.
Q6. Was there an idea or scene that inspired A Passion for Mushrooms?
A6. Passion for Mushrooms is one hundred percent inspired by the quote I used for an epigraph: "Hobbits have a passion for mushrooms, surpassing even the greediest likings of Big People." - The Fellowship of the Ring, J.R.R. Tolkien.
When I decided to write it, the fandom already had more than a few stories about Bilbo planting gardens and deciding to stay in Erebor with a miraculously alive Thorin. I was completely here for all of that, of course, but I wanted a story where the garden wasn't special because of gold or rare plants bought with gold. I wanted there to be a treasure that Bilbo could appreciate with the Baggins half of his heart, as well as the Tookish bit. And I know next to nothing about mountains, but I do know mushrooms do okay in caves, so...
Q7. Did you do any special research before writing the work?
A7. If you're asking this because I go deep on How To Pluck A Chicken In A Medieval Kitchen during the cooking scenes, you're right and you should say it. I am a middling cook, but all of my ingredients come from grocery stores. I had to do a fair bit of research on the cooking aspects of the story that were furthest from my own experience. Fortunately, the professor already put tomatoes and potatoes in Middle-earth, so I didn't have to go Full Historical.
Q8. Did the story change from how you originally envisioned it? Were there scenes or plot elements you had to cut out?
A8. It absolutely did. Because I am, as previously said, a pantster. I wanted a bigger bang for the ending of the story than I was set up to get. I could have stopped with Bilbo and Thorin getting together and had some simple falling action, but that didn't perfectly tie the subplot of Dis and Tauriel back to the main pairing, which I knew I wanted. Having Doron try to poison Bilbo was actually a late in the game choice. If I'd planned that from the start, I would have threaded him into more of the middle sections of the novel.
As for cutting things out, the additional stories in the series started as deleted scenes/reader requests that I couldn't find use for. So most of what I cut didn't end up in the rubbish bin. Anything that wound up there really wasn't worth posting.
Q9. Do you have a favorite moment from the entire series?
A9. I still really like "A Spy In The Shire" a lot. I know it's so self-indulgent to say that about a story focusing on an OC, but if the point of the Battle of Five Armies is to reclaim Erebor for the dwarves, then I want that to mean something. I want the average dwarf to be in a bad place. I want the average dwarf to need Erebor the way Thorin needs Erebor, to be willing to do anything to get back to the Lonely Mountain. Because if that's the case, then all the sacrifice means something. When I talk about this one luckless dwarf on the world's silliest quest to figure out how to help the king hook up with a hobbit, I'm talking about hope for the future. I'm talking about all the people who long for and dream of the home that Thorin was willing to die to reclaim. I think about them going back there and living better lives. It brings me peace.

A3! Seasonal Event - Anniversary Game: Episode 5
Kumon: What do you mean!?
Iwakami: Honestly, I feel like the management is starting to get sloppier due to the recent lack of visitors…
Iwakami: There’s a rumor amongst the part-timers that if this goes on, Chess Garden will be turned into a golf course.
Kumon: No way…
Azami: (I knew the number of visitors was declining, but I didn’t think it was that bad…)
Iwakami: That’s why I want this event to be a success! If there are more customers, the rumors will disappear, too.
Azami: I get what’s happening now.
Kumon: Yeah, we’ll also do everything we can. Our company’s been supporting Chess Garden for a long time now, after all!
Iwakami: Y-Yes. I heard that the events MANKAI Company participated in were all well-received.
Iwakami: That’s why the owner is so excited about this event!
Azami: (He looks really happy when he talks about Chess Garden. He even came up to me and asked for my help…)
Azami: Looks like you care a lot about Chess Garden.
Kumon: Right! We can tell just by talking to you!
Iwakami: … I’m shy, and I get anxious easily, so I took on a part-time job hoping it’d help me change.
Iwakami: I interviewed at various places, and wasn’t hired anywhere… until Chess Garden.
Iwakami: In the beginning, I didn’t understand chess at all and I couldn’t communicate with the customers, so I ended up making a lot of mistakes.
Kumon: I see. You weren’t used to it, so you got nervous. Must’ve been tough.
Iwakami: Yes. But I’ve gotten much better thanks to the owner and everyone else on staff. I’m really grateful to them.
Iwakami: As I studied the books the owner had lent me, I started liking chess more and more.
Iwakami: This one in particular was especially helpful!
Azami: (That’s the same book Sakyo gave me.)
Azami: (This guy really did his best even though he wasn’t used to working, and he got better thanks to the people he’s surrounded by.)
Azami: (I was probably like that when I first joined the company, too…)
Iwakami: I love Chess Garden, the owner, and my friends. I want to learn more about how fun chess is, and I want to teach that to the customers, too.
Iwakami: That’s why, I don’t want Chess Garden to disappear…
Azami: I see.
Kumon: So that’s what’s going on.
Iwakami: I’ll also do everything in my power to make the Anniversary Game as exciting as possible! I’ll hand out flyers, for example…
Iwakami: Also, I’ll make a prayer that it’ll be sunny all day on the day of the event!
Azami: Yeah. If it rains, the event might not be held at all.
Kumon: Then, I’ll make a teru teru bozu!
Iwakami: T-Thank you very much…! If there’s anything else I can do, please don’t hesitate to tell me!
-
Kumon: Iwakami-kun’s such a hardworking and good guy!
Kumon: If I had entered high school a year later, I’d be his senior too.
Azami: Aren’t you his senior now, too, even though you graduated?
Kumon: I guess that’s true.
Kumon: … While listening to Iwakami-kun’s story, I remembered what it was like when I first joined the company.
Azami: Same. Lots of things went wrong when we first started acting too.
Azami: We weren’t alone, though. We had the Director and everyone else supporting us…
Kumon: Yeah! We were able to do our best, and keep doing many things, ‘cause we had everyone with us!
Kumon: Also, I totally get wanting to protect a place important to you, so I want to help, too.
Azami: Yeah.
Azami: (Is there anything we can do to help protect Chess Garden…)
-
Azami: (I started reading the chess book Iwakami was reading as part of my role study…)
Azami: Why’s this so hard…?
Banri: Yo, Azami. Watcha readin’?
Azami: A chess book. Got it from Sakyo.
Banri: Oh, yeah. You’re gonna be in the upcoming Chess Garden event. Well, do your best.
Azami: … Say, Banri-san.
Banri: Hm?
Azami: Didn’t you also participate in a Chess Garden event? There’s something I wanna ask you about that–

Reposted from @steviewonderlegacy In his own words:
«Innervisions gives my own perspective of what’s happening in my world. That’s why it took me seven months to get together. I think it’s my most personal album. I don’t care if it sells only five copies – this is the way I feel».
•
50 years ago today (August 3, 1973), Stevie’s landmark recording “Innervisions” was released.
As great as Music of My Mind and Talking Book are, Innervisions is where Stevie Wonder made a quantum leap into that rarified creative air in a manner that only a handful of artists have ever managed to do in the history of pop music.
The record is a smart and beautiful observation of the situation that existed in America in 1973, seen through Stevie’s mind’s eye. Far more than any of its predecessors, Stevie explored a whole spectrum of emotions and issues such as love, pain, joy, tragedy, spirituality, drug abuse, anger, humour, philosophical musings, poignant social commentaries, you name it. And all this expressed in music as powerful, stylistically diverse and resonant as anything Stevie had put out, without ever sacrificing his extraordinary pop sensibility.
A few days after the album’s release, Wonder suffered a car accident that nearly took his life. For a moment, it seemed that Innervisions may have been his last recorded statement. Thankfully, he survived and continued into the prime of his creative career. #Innervisions50

BIG TRAIN BACK ON BBC2 AFTER 25 YEARS!
I’m very proud to say that comedy sketch show Big Train is being repeated again on BBC2 at 10:00pm on the 29th June 2023. Then it's on the BBC player. It premiered way back in 1998 on BBC2. Hard to believe that is 25 years ago! The show was created by Father Tedcreators Graham Linehan and Arthur Mathews. It also starred Simon Pegg, Amelia Bullimore, Julia Davis, Mark Heap and Kevin Eldon. So it’s fun to see it reappear after all of this time back on BBC2!
Big Train helped to launch my career. I created sketches for the show with comic book artist Paul Hatcher. These focused on the trials and tribulations of the 43rd World Stareout Championship. This is a sport you’ve never seen before! Commentated by Phil Cornwall and the Barry Davis (of Match of the Day fame). The show went on to win Best Broken Comedy at the 1998 British Comedy Awards, 1998 Golden Rose of Montreux and 1997 Best animation at the Everyman Short Film Festival.
Here’s a mid-match sneaky peek: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p007817z
To celebrate this 25th anniversary I'm also selling some limited edition stareout prints at my Etsy shop. https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1496771656/big-train-43rd-stareout-championship?ref=listings_manager_grid
Remember - Those who dare stare!

hi icha!! I just finished the anniversary event lol ,, three ヽ(´▽`’)ノ for mankai!! (yes that’s actually what cheers on my phone autocorrects to). ummm I think this event was so sweet. I don’t have too much to say since a lot of it reviews stuff that had already happened and if I talked abt every a3 character moment that had gone in since the beginning I would never bc able to move on with my life. so this’ll be disjointed.
I liked how everyone got izumi a present individually and how they surprised her with the message book and she surprised them back! it was so sweet and izumi performing all of the plays they did was so good… like man. felt like it rly demonstrated her passion!
this is also the second time I’ve seen some other game localized ad red rover, a game which I’ve also never played. two nickels! (the first is for eng translations of poker face ft. gumi and prod. yuchaP that translate hana ichi monme to red rover)
rly loved the re-mention of citron wanting to leave bc he was being followed. runaway prince. also guy seems like he’s successfully followed him,, and tenma!! him being like. well I’ve got the best guys and izumi to back me up… even if they’re sometimes annoying…. no, they’re ALWAYS annoying as hell. and tenma trying to pick out a cute sticker from yukis collection as yuki thinks of how he used to get made fun of for having his collection… yeah. the way yuki and tenma BOTH have a moment where they go like … in the middle of bickering and r like. well I’m thankful this guy is by my side. it’s sweet.
I also forgot muku gave up track and field bc of an injury!! that rly sucks… in other thoughts muku joined the troupe right after spring which makes perfect sense since he loves princes so much I think the fairy tale style of spring troupe would appeal to him so much! whenever muku gets his prince role it’ll be an Moment for sure.
the banri and juza filling out pages was fun I think. the way they introspect as each other does their page is a neat detail. also izumi supporting juzas acting growth will never not warm my heart. I like to think she sees herself in him just a bit. sakyos message was so sweet…
the best part of this event I think is the interplay between roommates like. tasuku and tsumugi fondly reminiscing over like elementary school or whatever. and tasuku only submitting a “thank you” at the end for that! that’s so. Him. also gosh. tasuku and tsumugi’s gratitude towards like being able to act as they wish and with each other… it gets me every time
”I was taught to lie low and recover my stamina when I’m weakened” uhhh here’s a hisoka quote I don’t remember. more assassin points. and azuma talking abt him as a kid observing everyone having fun from a distance… don’t be so relatable. I’m glad that we saw sakuyas message in full! since it was so sweet. guess we saw tasukus full message since it was so short lol,, that’s abt all I had to say! just one event left
YOU'RE ON A ROLL!! HI THERE!!!! omg you're really getting closer in closer to act 2, that's so much help.
The Cheers event really was very cute!! it's a lot of reviewing but after one year of content it's really sweet to have a review of it all. It's so so good. On this event there was a SR for every single characters and the backstage are a little more detailled about how each character feels about Izumi and stuff and it's honestly pretty sweet. It's where Hisoka gifts her the cat pillow and i still have been crying over it ever since.
ANYWAY. THEM!!!!
I honestly love how everyone really wanted to thank Izumi and it shows also the impact she really had on their lives. When you think most of them ran into the theater by chance, none of them would have expected just how much this would change their lives and now they're growing in ways they would never have imagined and it's so much. And i love Izumi giving it back and performing all the plays, it's really so sweet and i'm just, so happy everyone was so happy about it.
and ooh that's so cool about the localization :ooo so nice.
YEAH Citron's whole deal being reminded is really neat imo, it really shows you just how far he's come by accepting staying here with everyone. THE TENMA BIT IS SO CUTE YES. He loves them so much he forgot for a second that they annoy him ALL the time. (on that note there's a series of backstage called the "One Day Leader Swap" (you can search for them) for each leader where they have, well, what it says on the tin. All of them are really funny, but i esp remember how Tenma's was soft because he had a pretty good experience, then came back to his troupe being annoying and yet he still smiled and went "well. I wouldn't have it any other way." and it's just. Them being annoying isn't a bug it's a FEATURE!!!! And god the Yuki bit too it's so much. When you remember how much they didn't want to room together too it adds a layer.
And yeah god, Muku… He mentions in the summer first chap that he wanted to be a track runner because it was like a hero of one of his manga and he was always bummed when he had to quit and now he has to cheer on his old team, probably feeling guilty of not being able to still be there and helpful for them and probably adding to his anxiety to not being able to keep up with acting… Poor sweetie. Instead he found something that really helped him. And yeah, the fact he just loved RomeJuli so much being what inspired him to join is really so sweet. Cheering for our sweet prince, always.
Banri and Juza's were indeed very sweet, and the fact they introspect that way does bring this layer of their growth being interwinded. Especially Banri who wouldn't have been there without his obsession with Juza and ended up finding something that makes him so happy instead of it all. All the messages are lovely.
Tsumu and Tasu are so cute on all of this sobbbsss. They're so good.
And oh boy. yeah Hisoka says that line when he's having his fever at the end of the Winter first chapter. It's because of this philosophy he got lured to the unopening door and why Izumi and him got locked here until Hisoka had his delirious dream about apologizing to "August" for something Hisoka has done. The next morning Hisoka didn't remember anything about this fever dream, including what he commented on for his stamina and stuff. It's really indeed… very worrying at least.
And god the Azuma line; bites fist that guy. man.
And SAKUYAAAAAAAAAAAA BABY.
The whole thing was just. so nice. I love them all so much. Events usually focus on a handful of people so it was nice to see all of them just, talk about how much all this time there was good to them. It really drives home just how much of a home this whole family became.
I love them so muchhhh 😭😭😭😭
Congratulation on getting this far :3c
Valentine's Magic next. And then. Ooooooh boy. :3c can't wait to see you back there eheheh

Hi. I just saw the news on the A3! 6th anniversary event. I was surprised that it would feature a masquerade party, which is a coincidence after the TWST Glorious Masquerade event. Good luck on getting Taichi’s card.
Hi there :) Huh, pretty close coincidence I see 🤔 And yeah, I hope I could get it, but not so sure if I can after the snowfall scout. A bit broke rn, should have save them for this anniv smh. (damn u l/ber and my greedy self) I'll try to pull aki banner with what i have and see if I get him. 😔 Hoping for oshi luck. Oh, and I only got Azuma from the free pulls. :')
Speaking of A3 anniversary, I wonder if the OGders are gonna be on the cover for the 7th book? If it's not limited to Mankai only, maybe Godza can too? That'll be cool.

Mark Lanegan's 'Bubblegum' Celebrates 20 Years with Deluxe Edition Featuring Unreleased Tracks
Mark Lanegan's 2004 album, Bubblegum, is getting a deluxe reissue for its 20th anniversary. The collaboration between Beggars Arkive and Lanegan’s estate has resulted in Bubblegum XX, a remastered double-LP set to be released on August 23. Additionally, a four-LP box set will be available, featuring two bonus LPs filled with rarities, outtakes, and 12 previously unreleased tracks. The album has been remastered by Geoff Pesche at Abbey Road Studios. This edition marks the first time Bubblegum is presented as a double LP, unlike the original 2004 vinyl which fit the 50-minute album onto a single disc. The bonus discs include a remastered version of Here Comes That Weird Chill (Methamphetamine Blues, Extras & Oddities), now with three additional songs. Steven Friederich Reportersteven, CC BY-SA 4.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0, via Wikimedia Commons The final LP in the set, Demos & Unreleased Songs, offers four tracks produced and mixed by Troy Van Leeuwen, recorded in various hotel rooms with Lanegan on vocals and Van Leeuwen playing all instruments. One of the highlights is "Union Tombstone," featuring Beck. Van Leeuwen reflects on the sessions: "These hotel demo sessions were basically forgotten. When I heard about Mark’s passing, memories came flooding back. I searched through my archive and miraculously found these sessions. It was as if they were fresh out of the tap. The rough mixes are a time capsule that holds up even after 20 years. It’s a true gift from Mark to those of us who love him and his raw expression of beauty. Every listen humbles me, and I’m honored to share his gift." The Bubblegum XX box set includes a 64-page hardcover book with essays by Troy Van Leeuwen, Josh Homme, Chris Goss, Alain Johannes, David Catching, Greg Dulli, Duff McKagan, and Brett Netson, along with studio notes and unseen photographs by Steve Gullick. Josh Homme recalls, “When he told me: ‘I’m calling it Bubblegum,’ I thought he was joking. Knowing Mark, it was darkly humorous. He wanted to be a new piece of bubblegum on a sunny day, but he was the gum stuck under the desk. He was the dark lord.” Here's the artwork and tracklist for Bubblegum XX: Bubblegum – 2XLP - A1. When Your Number Isn’t Up - A2. Hit The City (with PJ Harvey) - A3. Wedding Dress - A4. Methamphetamine Blues - B1. One Hundred Days - B2. Bombed - B3. Strange Religion - B4. Hey, same person who told you which A3! VAs can rap, again.
TY for the A3! mini chat translations, especially the Itaru-Homare one ‘cause it relates secretly to otakus.
The part where Floyd used the bean blasters as tonfas in the Beanfest event story occurred after Floyd beaned Jamil.
I also like the song 月光 out of all the BLACKSTAR 4th anniversary songs. Though my favorite 4th anniversary chara images from all the MVs are Qu holding a modern recurve bow gracefully, Mokuren holding a katana, Heath looking like a sniper, Gui dual wielding hunting knives, Hari unsheathing his cane sword, & Yoshino holding the beakers w/ flowers.
Hi, no problem! Yeah, it was one of my favorites mini chats (´。• ᵕ •。`)
Oh, right. I remember it now. He really wanted to go after Jamil no matter what (ーvー;). By the way, I finally finished Book 6. I already knew the story, but it hit harder with the voices and images.
I agree with your choices. After checking the MVs again, I'd also add Akira's, Taiga's and Maica's arts as one of my favorites (๑˃ᴗ˂)ﻭ

A3! Seasonal Event - Anniversary Game: Episode 3
Sakyo: If you’re that fired up… Do you happen to like chess, Hyodo Jr.?
Kumon: I’ve never played properly, but I’ve always thought it’s really cool!
Sakyo: Ain’t that nice. This’ll also be a good opportunity for you to learn how to play.
Izumi: Then, we can say Kumon-kun will definitely participate.
Kumon: Yay! Thanks!
Kumon: Hey, hey, Azami. Wanna join me? You said you know the rules yesterday!
Azami: Ah… Well, sure. I don’t really know chess either, but I’m interested.
Izumi: Okay! Then, we’ll be counting on you too, Azami-kun.
-
Azami: (What happened at school and this request might’ve just been a coincidence, but it’s seriously eating at me.)
Azami: (Obviously, I’m also honestly interested in chess, but…)
Azami: … *sigh*
Sakyo: Oi, what’s gotten into you all of a sudden? You’re looking at me and sighing.
Azami: I ain’t looking at you!
Azami: (He got it wrong ‘cause I sighed at a weird time. But telling Sakyo about this won’t lead anywhere…)
Azami: I just remembered back when you were playing the role of a tyrant king, you were a pain in the ass with your role building.
Sakyo: Ah, that did happen. Were you thinking about the Chess Garden event?
Azami: I’m not really familiar with the theme… I gotta make sure I won’t struggle with my role building.
Sakyo: ...
[Paper rustling]
Sakyo: Oi, Bon.
Azami: Huh? What’s that?
Sakyo: It’s a strategy book written by a chess champion. If you know how the pieces move, you’ll understand the contents of this book.
Sakyo: It might not be directly related to the contents of the play, but it’ll be helpful to some extent.
Azami: I didn’t ask for it, though. ... Well, I’ll take it just in case.
Sakyo: Just be honest about your feelings and take it, seriously...
-
Izumi: So, the members who have been decided to participate in Anniversary Game are...
Izumi: Azami-kun, Kumon-kun, Hisoka-san, Azuma-san, Tsuzuru-kun and Chikage-san.
Azami: I’ll be in your care.
Azuma: Yes, likewise.
Chikage: By the way, was it a conscious decision not to include any members who participated in past events?
Izumi: It was. The other times, we played the roles based on profile sheets given to us by the other party...
Izumi: But this time, the script will be written entirely by Tsuzuru-kun, so the new members won’t have to feel bound by the roles that were played previously.
Tsuzuru: But I still want to keep the same setting, so I’m thinkin’ the roles will be based on chess pieces.
Tsuzuru: I’ll also be in touch with the other party while deciding the setting and the characters.
Izumi: Once the script is a bit more fleshed out, we’ll discuss everyone’s roles.
Chikage: Understood.
Azuma: Since the theme is chess, Homare said he’d have loved to participate had it fit his schedule.
Hisoka: He asked me to join in his place, so I made him pay me in chocolate marshmallows for it.
Kumon: Ahaha, I see. We have to work hard for Homare-san's sake too, then!
Azami: By the way, does everyone here know how to play chess?
Azuma: I play here and there, as a hobby.
Chikage: I’m at about that level, too.
Hisoka: Me too...
Kumon: Is that so? I still don’t understand the first thing about chess...
Azami: Same here. That's why we gotta put some effort into studying.
Tsuzuru: I also don’t know anything further than the rules. Let’s do our best together.
Azuma: In that case... How about we start a chess crash course?
Azuma: I think I can teach you the basics of chess, such as the rules and how the pieces move.

Hey, same person who thanked you for the Misumi 4th anniversary card, again. TY for responding & it’s a surprise that you’re interested in TWST, in a good way. Speaking of TWST’s Ch6 spoilers, Rook introduced himself to the people at the Isle of Lamentation in a way that made me think of A3!’s Homare. Also, Rook’s B-day is 12/02 while Hisoka’s B-day is 12/03.
wwwwww yeah I've seen that, he's so extra I love it, book 6 is really enjoyable so far (´꒳`) and there's something funny about seeing birthdays that are really close together lol

Hey, same person who thanked you for the Misumi 4th anniversary card, again. TY for the Homare 9th play card; he does look good as a proprietress. Also, can I hear your opinion on the A3! charas cross dressing in French nobility outfits?
Homare really does look good in his role, I'm glad that between Ritsu and Nobara it seems that A3 is branching out which characters get female roles!
I know I didn't really post about it, but I was absolutely losing my mind over Nobara and the new dress set... the style that the new set is in is kind of hit or miss for me in general, but I think Sakuya and Masumi in particular look great, and dress sets are always a win in my book (´꒳`)♡
