Hey I saw you reblogged about the salt lick test but that's been debunked. While salt is good and necessary, regularly having too much is also dangerous, and the salt lick test can lead to that. User dragontatoes did a bit of an explanation if you want to look into it more.

Blargh. I did some research myself this morning, and while there isn't a big proper debunking source outside of tumblr itself, there also isn't a big source source for the "salt lick test" outside of tumblr, so it's all a big ouroboros.

I think part of what makes the original seem so likely (and why I reblogged it in the first place, though I've deleted it now) is that it's close to other things that are true. Which I suppose is one of the ways misinformation can get so entrenched.

However, here are the results of my research, for those who want outside sources:

"Salt and Water: A Simple Approach to Hyponatremia" -

Medical article that describes common reasons for lack of sodium in a patient (of which there are many, in varying degrees of home-treatable or not), how to go about testing for it (spoiler: always a blood test), and treatments (which a doctor needs to monitor, because how the patient reacts to treatment may indicate different issues overall -- though the easiest and immediate treatment is intravenous saline, which is similar to what the original poster was suggesting, while also not at all.)

Article from Popular Science, which, while primarily focused on the sugar aspect of sports drinks, does also discuss signs and symptoms of when someone might need to boost sodium with a sports drink or, more regularly, just more salt in the diet. Spoiler here too: In this particular case, it's related to heavy, regular exercise. (Which, as we know from the earlier articles, is only one of the reasons someone might be experiencing a salt deficiency.)

The rule of thumb provided regarding sports drinks here is: "If you’re exercising for more than an hour, and your t-shirt or hat dries with a white residue, that’s a pretty good indicator that you’re losing a lot of sodium and might benefit from a sports drink (along with getting sodium in your diet)."

But, barring the exercise described above, if you're experiencing extreme cravings for salt or are experiencing the signs of low sodium -- which, from the first medical article linked above, are:

--a doctor and a blood test are the only real way you're going to know if you need more salt, and how to correct the matter both short and long term.
