Round 19
Date: 4/20/2018 (heh)
Bottles:
A.D. Rattray - Linkwood 21 year
Duncan Taylor Octave - Glentauchers 2008
We’re really behind on reviews! Sorry for the brief silence, I think it’s time we continue our journey through whisky. Two independent bottlings this time. Let’s discuss:
A.D. Rattray - Linkwood 21 year
This one was an accidental repeat, but we were reminded why we forgot about it. Very middle of the road. Oaky and spicy, not really anything well-defined about this one. Not worth the price in our opinion.
Duncan Taylor Octave - Glentauchers 2008
A complete contrast to the Linkwood, the Glentauchers was smooth and full-bodied. Honey, bananas, vanilla. A whopping 104 proof whisky that needed no additional water to open up the profile. This one was about $120, but had the quality of a whisky twice the price.

The Christmas Eve dram of the 4th Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar promises to be a good one, at least on the face of things: she’s a 29 year-old Tamnavulin bottled by A.D. Rattray!
I’m doubly excited because this is a distillery that is new to me as well. Another modern distillery, Tamnavulin was built in 1966. It can produce about 4.5 million litres of product a year and has only occasionally been available in official bottlings, with a new single malt product launched in 2016: a ‘double cask’ version finished in sherry casks. The majority goes into the massive Whyte & MacKay blend.
This version has much more going for it than that, having aged a loooong 29 years in bourbon hogshead #10026. It retains a pretty decent 49.4% ABV as well. Initially I got lots of vanilla and musty grain on the nose, with grapefruit pith and orange pekoe for accents. It boasts a lot of freshness as well, however, with grass, pear, and apple present. On the tongue it explodes with tons of pepper and some pretty good fruits, reflecting the nose. There is a slight sting, however, which is a little surprising considering the time involved. A bitter graininess also helps prevent it from hitting the stratosphere.
It doesn’t boast a ton of complexity, but this mature malt is still very interesting and a real pleasure to imbibe. A.D. Rattray continues to bat 1.000 in this calendar, and I don’t care what the penultimate offering is -- they are the undisputed champions of the fourth Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar. Hands down.

The core range fro A.D. Rattray: Cask Orkney, Stronachie, Cask Islay. Very easy, sessionable whiskies, good introductory range. . The IB range we tried, however, was quite surprising. The 20YO Inchgower especially was a peppery, spice bomb that didn’t taste like a 20YO sherry casked whisky at all, even at 61.2% ABV. . #adrattray #independentbottler #whisky #whiskey #scotch #singlemalt #caskislay #caskorkney #stronachie #mytipsyturvy #tipsyturvywhisky (at Pullman Kuala Lumpur City Centre) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1QjjZcpTRt/?igshid=h8dnvfehgj3

Macduff 18 Year (2002) A.D. Rattray Cask Collection
Review by: The Muskox Macduff feels like an easily-ignored distillery. There are those Deveron official bottlings, which are pretty mild and boring, and not all that much in the way of indie bottlings. Maybe there’s something special hidden out of sight. Distillery: Macduff. Bottler: AD Rattray. Region: Highlands. ABV: 58.5%. Cask strength. Age: 18 years. Distilled August 20th 2002. Bottled…

Round 11
Date: 4/11/2017
Bottles:
A.D. Rattray Linkwood 21
Old Pulteney 21
The Dalmore Cigar Malt Reserve
Back down to three bottles for this round, and we also picked out three very similarly-priced bottles. All of these were between $130-$200. Two were even the same age. Let’s begin:
A.D. Rattray Linkwood 21
This was our first bottle from A.D. Rattray and we approve. Linkwood is a Speyside distillery, but this did not taste like your typical Speyside scotch. A bit spicy and playful. Definitely oaky. A solid choice, and the cheapest of the bunch.
“Tastes like golf.” - @sreegs
Old Pulteney 21
This malt won an award a few years ago, and that comes as no surprise. This is one of the most scotchy scotches we’ve ever scotched. It tastes like your dad’s scotch. Very classic and toasty flavor profile. You buy this for anyone who wants something fancy. A highlander.
“I’m Scotch, nice to meet you.” - @cryptographrix
The Dalmore Cigar Malt
No, this did not taste like cigars. This malt was the other highlander in the group, and it was designed for the cigar-smoking crowd. None of us could verify that claim, but what we did get was a sweet and syrupy whisky that many of us considered the round favorite. Fruity and pleasant. An exemplary sherried whisky.
“Real maple syrup, not the fake stuff.” - @winterthemute

Progressing deeper into the second half of the Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar, I am pleased to see something I have never tried before: Speyside distillery Glen Elgin!
This was evidently one of the last distilleries to be built during the big Scotch whisky boom in 1890. The original owners sold it at a loss 11 years later. Since the 1930s it has been largely used for the White Horse Blend, which I have seen referenced multiple times in my life but have never actually witnessed or experienced a bottle. Like many distilleries that produce a beefier distillate (Mortlach the one that most recently comes to mind, as my wife just recently procured a bottle), Glen Elgin cools its spirit through the use of traditional worm tubs instead of condensers. There are allegedly freshwater shrimp that live in those tubs, which seems...curious to me, at best. Watch out if you have a seafood allergy, I guess?
This particular sample of Glen Elgin is a hearty 21 years-old, distilled in 1995 and lovingly laid into bourbon hogshead #3203. It emerged at 52.9% ABV and suffered no chill filtration or colouring.
It possesses a very pleasant nose, with a lot of sweet vanilla up front with a hint of chocolate, orange zest, and a bit of oak and green tea. On the tongue, the body is absolutely huge, oily and thick. The sweetness lives here too, with honey and vanilla up front, but a pretty good alcohol sting comes in after the initial impression. A hint of orange zest and a sprinkle of cocoa powder add some depth. The bitter green tea returns, barely, on the finish, with some grainy sweetness. Warming too, with a little pepper and ginger.
This was another real charmer! The higher ABV was much more palatable than the secret Speyside from a couple of days ago, and a little water relaxed it just the right amount. What’s left is a sweet, complex malt that is darn delightful. These A.D. Rattray chaps know how to pick their barrels.

Knockdhu 10 2009/2020 #700308 DR For The Whisky Bar (56,6 %)
En rimelig fersk, «norsk» tapning nå. Dette er en ti år gammel Knockdhu som er tappet av A.D. Rattray i anledning tiårsjubileet til The Whisky Bar i Oslo.
Jevnt over fruktigere.
Karakter: 88/100
