I was writing that piece with Anthony and realized after writing most of it that I hadn't stopped to check and see if his dialogue was like. In character. And then I realized that I don't HAVE to check if his dialogue is "in character" because he's my best friend and I know him better than anyone else so of course I would automatically write him in character! Who is he.
Ben Bernanke
14th Chair of Federal Reserve
Ben Shalom Bernanke (/bərˈnæŋki/ bər-NANG-kee; born December 13, 1953) is an American economist at the Brookings Institution who served two terms as the 14th Chair of the Federal Reserve, from 2006 to 2014. During his tenure as chair, Bernanke oversaw the Federal Reserve's response to the late-2000s financial crisis, for which he was named the 2009 Time Person of the Year. Before becoming Federal Reserve chair, Bernanke was a tenured professor at Princeton University and chaired the department of economics there from 1996 to September 2002, when he went on public service leave.
Quick Facts 14th Chair of the Federal Reserve, President ...
From August 5, 2002, until June 21, 2005, he was a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, proposed the Bernanke Doctrine, and first discussed "the Great Moderation" — the theory that traditional business cycles have declined in volatility in recent decades through structural changes that have occurred in the international economy, particularly increases in the economic stability of developing nations, diminishing the influence of macroeconomic (monetary and fiscal) policy.
Bernanke then served as chairman of President George W. Bush's Council of Economic Advisers before President Bush nominated him to succeed Alan Greenspan as chairman of the United States Federal Reserve. His first term began February 1, 2006. Bernanke was confirmed for a second term as chairman on January 28, 2010, after being renominated by President Barack Obama, who later referred to him as "the epitome of calm." His second term ended January 31, 2014, when he was succeeded by Janet Yellen on February 3, 2014.
Bernanke wrote about his time as chairman of the Federal Reserve in his 2015 book, The Courage to Act, in which he revealed that the world's economy came close to collapse in 2007 and 2008. Bernanke asserts that it was only the novel efforts of the Fed (cooperating with other agencies and agencies of foreign governments) that prevented an economic catastrophe greater than the Great Depression.
Family and childhood
Bernanke was born in Augusta, Georgia, and was raised on East Jefferson Street in Dillon, South Carolina. His father Philip was a pharmacist and part-time theater manager. His mother Edna was an elementary school teacher. Bernanke has two younger siblings. His brother, Seth, is a lawyer in Charlotte, North Carolina. His sister, Sharon, is a longtime administrator at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
The Bernankes were one of the few Jewish families in Dillon and attended Ohav Shalom, a local synagogue; Bernanke learned Hebrew as a child from his maternal grandfather, Harold Friedman, a professional hazzan (service leader), shochet, and Hebrew teacher. Bernanke's father and uncle owned and managed a drugstore they purchased from Bernanke's paternal grandfather, Jonas Bernanke.
Jonas Bernanke was born in Boryslav, Austria-Hungary (today part of Ukraine), on January 23, 1891. He immigrated to the United States from Przemyśl, Poland, and arrived at Ellis Island, aged 30, on June 30, 1921, with his wife Pauline, aged 25. On the ship's manifest, Jonas's occupation is listed as "clerk" and Pauline's as "doctor med".
The family moved to Dillon from New York in the 1940s. Bernanke's mother gave up her job as a schoolteacher when her son was born and worked at the family drugstore. Ben Bernanke also worked there sometimes.
Young adult
As a teenager, Bernanke worked construction on a hospital and waited tables at a restaurant at nearby South of the Border, a roadside attraction, amusement park and fireworks retailer, in his hometown of Dillon, before leaving for college. To support himself throughout college, he continued to work during the summers at South of the Border.
Religion
As a teenager in the 1960s, Bernanke would help roll the Torah scrolls in his local synagogue. Although he keeps his beliefs private, his friend Mark Gertler, chairman of New York University's economics department, says they are "embedded in who he (Bernanke) is." Once Bernanke was at Harvard for his freshman year, Fellow Dillon native Kenneth Manning took him to Brookline for Rosh Hashanah services.
Education
Bernanke was educated at East Elementary, J.V. Martin Junior High, and Dillon High School, where he was class valedictorian and played saxophone in the marching band. Since Dillon High School did not offer calculus at the time, Bernanke taught it to himself. Bernanke scored 1590 out of 1600 on the SAT and was a National Merit Scholar. He also was a contestant in the 1965 National Spelling Bee.
Bernanke attended Harvard College in 1971, where he lived in Winthrop House, as did the future CEO of Goldman Sachs, Lloyd Blankfein, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with an A.B. degree, and later with an A.M. in economics summa cum laude in 1975. He received a Ph.D. degree in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1979 after completing and defending his dissertation, Long-Term Commitments, Dynamic Optimization, and the Business Cycle. Bernanke's thesis adviser was the future governor of the Bank of Israel, Stanley Fischer, and his readers included Irwin S. Bernstein, Rüdiger Dornbusch, Robert Solow, and Peter Diamond of MIT and Dale Jorgenson of Harvard.
Personal life
Ben and Anna Bernanke
Bernanke met his wife, Anna, a schoolteacher, on a blind date. She was a student at Wellesley College, and he was in graduate school at MIT.[citation needed] The Bernankes have two children, Joel and Alyssa. He is an ardent fan of the Washington Nationals baseball team, and frequently attends games at Nationals Park.
When Bernanke left Stanford to accept a position at Princeton, he and his family moved to Montgomery Township, New Jersey, in 1985, where Bernanke's children attended the local public schools. Bernanke served for six years as a member of the board of education of the Montgomery Township School District.
In 2009, The Wall Street Journal reported that Bernanke was a victim of identity theft, a spreading crime the Federal Reserve has for years issued warnings about.
Academic and government career (1979–2006)
Bernanke meeting with United States President Barack Obama.
Bernanke taught at the Stanford Graduate School of Business from 1979 until 1985, was a visiting professor at New York University and went on to become a tenured professor at Princeton University in the Department of Economics. He chaired that department from 1996 until September 2002, when he went on public service leave. He resigned his position at Princeton July 1, 2005.
Bernanke served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System from 2002 to 2005. In one of his first speeches as a Governor, entitled "Deflation: Making Sure It Doesn't Happen Here", he outlined what has been referred to as the Bernanke Doctrine.
As a member of the board of governors of the Federal Reserve System on February 20, 2004, Bernanke gave a speech in which he postulated that we are in a new era called the Great Moderation, where modern macroeconomic policy has decreased the volatility of the business cycle to the point that it should no longer be a central issue in economics.
In June 2005, Bernanke was named chairman of President George W. Bush's Council of Economic Advisers, and resigned as Fed Governor. The appointment was largely viewed as a test run to ascertain if Bernanke could be Bush's pick to succeed Greenspan as Fed chairman the next year. He held the post until January 2006.
Chairman of the United States Federal Reserve
Bernanke testifying before the House Financial Services Committee responding to a question on February 10, 2009.
On February 1, 2006, Bernanke began a fourteen-year term as a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors and a four-year term as chairman (after having been nominated by President Bush in late 2005). By virtue of the chairmanship, he sat on the Financial Stability Oversight Board that oversees the Troubled Asset Relief Program. He also served as chairman of the Federal Open Market Committee, the System's principal monetary policy making body.
His first months as chairman of the Federal Reserve System were marked by difficulties communicating with the media. An advocate of more transparent Fed policy and clearer statements than Greenspan had made, he had to back away from his initial idea of stating clearer inflation goals as such statements tended to affect the stock market. Maria Bartiromo disclosed on CNBC comments from their private conversation at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner. She reported that Bernanke said investors had misinterpreted his comments as indicating that he was "dovish" on inflation. He was sharply criticized for making public statements about Fed direction, which he said was a "lapse in judgment."
Financial crisis of 2007–2008
Bernanke (left) in September 2008 as President Bush speaks about the economy
Further information: Financial crisis of 2007–08
As the Great Recession deepened, Bernanke oversaw some unorthodox measures. Under his guidance, the Fed lowered its funds interest rate from 5.25% to 0.0% within less than a year. When this was considered insufficient to abate the liquidity crisis, the Fed initiated quantitative easing, creating $1.3 trillion from November 2008 to June 2010 and using the created money to buy financial assets from banks and from the government.
Second term
Bernanke answers questions in 2013 at FOMC press conference
On August 25, 2009, President Obama announced he would nominate Bernanke to a second term as chairman of the Federal Reserve. In a short statement on Martha's Vineyard, with Bernanke standing at his side, Obama said Bernanke's background, temperament, courage and creativity helped to prevent another Great Depression in 2008.

MESSAGE TO MY FOLLOWERS
I know it’s really annoying to see my service dog fundraising post over and over.
I get it. I really do. Being asked for donations 100 times when you’re just trying to look at poems/art/memes can wear on the nerves, especially if you’ve already donated, or you’ve already decided that you can’t donate. I am sorry for being so repetitive. I don’t enjoy disrupting my usual content with pleas for money, and in fact, I find it rather embarrassing.
It’s just that... I literally don’t want to die. I am desperate. Pardon my language, but I have a whole clusterfuck of incurable diseases that severely inhibit my freedom and safety. I need a medical alert dog to manage my anaphylaxis the same way someone with type 1 diabetes needs a continuous glucose monitoring device, except my “device” is a dog. For my condition, there is no device that can do what a medical alert dog can do.
Given the gravity of my situation, I hope you can understand that while I do care about providing quality blog content, I care more about my basic medical safety. Reblogging my post has made a difference; since I first made the post, I’ve received multiple donations after a long period of inactivity. It has not escaped my attention that I’ve also lost 40+ followers, but I don’t particularly care about my follower account, and also, once again: I literally don’t want to die.
If you want to unfollow me because of my donation posts, you have every right to do so. Farewell. If you want to send me messages about how my donation posts are annoying, then I guess that’s your right too, although I will continue to delete such messages without response. If you’ve stuck with me but you can admit that you feel annoyed by my donation posts, then I thank you for your patience, and I validate your annoyance while also hoping you understand where I am coming from.
I look forward to the day when I’ve covered the cost of my service dog and I can close my fundraiser, refocusing on the creative content I love.

Digital media and senses wk1 Mapping
I find this task quite interesting as I encountered it as I could implement media as creatively as possible to represent a space. First occurred to my mind was the internet, since at the beginning of the class, Joanne flexed about her good quality microphone yet all I could hear was stuttered random noise. Internet it is, I thought. Since internet is a component that you cannot physically sense, I reckon it is also a good idea to map the objects in the living room with what I am especially good at – photography.
In order to achieve mapping my living space with the strength of internet signal, I need to use my phone. I went on google and initiated the internet speed test, collecting data from different part of the living room where I mainly stay when I have lectures, and kitchen. On the other hand, since solely relying on the sense of visual is slightly less creative to me, I wanted to go one step further. Instead of only taking photographs, I think it might be worthwhile to record the audio as I take the photo at the same time. Using my camera as a tool to take pictures, my phone to record, and a software to stitch them together, I would be able to achieve that.
In the process, I measured the internet speed around the four corners of the room and noted them down. After that, I took pictures of the room in different angles, and specific objects that make distinctive noises in the room, for example, the squeaky door, spoons in a bowl, the dart, the cactus, the fridge, the water tabs, the stove and the kettle, and documented the sound of them individually.
To examine the way to represent the senses with the signal, I decided to take the representational approach, that allows us to perceive the digital sensoriality through media, and therefore allows people who had commonalities to comprehend the sense in the same way (Pink, 2015). Since colour normally give insights towards consciousness and senses (Safran and Sanda, 2014), I chose green to represent signal strength in between 20-50 megabytes per second, yellow – 1-20 megabytes per second, red – 0-1 and black – nothingness. Having the idea in mind, I drew a map of the living room and the kitchen and used adobe illustrator to splash the effect as I imagined.
Tumblr media
One down and dusted, I soon got the idea of how to execute the other one. Inspired by the speculative methods (Mattern, 2015) that enables imaginations to sense with limited sensory information and the non-representational methods which in the word of Ingold (2011:b, 323, cited in Pink 2015, p.8) ‘We should listen to what so-called “indigenous people” to what people with impairments of sight and hearing have to tell us …’, I took the photographs in black and white in order to impair part of the visual senses, and then recorded the audio loud and clear. In the end, I exported it as a video and surprisingly, it offered me an alternative way of understanding my senses.
To conclude, I had a lot of fun pushing myself to think out of the box and sense the room that I am familiar with in an unfamiliar way. It was quite challenging thinking of the ways to represent but they all came intuitively after I had a glimpse of the readings. To be fair, the whole process was quite successful, and I achieved what I imagined. When I draw the signal map of the room, the visualisation of the signal strength hit me in a rather powerful but straightforward way and made me realised how unreliable our internet has been (although it has always been quite bad and all my flatmates and I realised it). The second attempt allowed me to feel my living space in a rather unique way, a way that I never had before and it was succeed with simple approaches, i.e. taking away some senses, complement some senses at the same time. I say it was indeed a rather fascinating experience.

Update
Hi, my dears!
There has been SO much happening in my life recently... my grandfather died, and a week later, my cat died. My medication regimen is out of wack; I'm currently experiencing increased depression symptoms and exhaustion as well as severe chronic pain, especially in my hips. I'm officially registered for my college classes, starting in August, but if my student loan application is not accepted for the full amount, I'm SOL. I can't move closer to my college due to financial constraints which means I'm facing an hour's subway and walking commute (tough when you're physically disabled). My eating disorder is trying its best to kick my ass, and my creative slump feels unending.
As you can imagine, it's a rough time. I have some part-time work helping my grandmother clean and pack and move furniture and then in July, I'm cat-sitting for a friend, but I don't have anything steady. The best thing you can do to support me is to join my Patreon, for $1 a month (or more, if you're feeling generous; every bit matters). You can also commission me to make/design/write just about anything you please: t-shirts, mugs, paintings, drawings, posters, photographs, business cards, poems... I'm very flexible and happy to work with you. All you have to do is email me ([email protected]).
Thank you! Wishing you all a lovely summer.
Sincerely, A.B.

【Research and Enquiry: Annotated Bibliography】
Birkenkrahe, M., 2014. Using storytelling methods to improve emotion, motivation and attitude of students writing scientific papers and theses. Presented at the Proceedings of 2014 IEEE 13th International Conference on Cognitive Informatics and Cognitive Computing, ICCI*CC 2014. https://doi.org/10.1109/ICCI-CC.2014.6921453 This article written by  Marcus Birkenkrahe is his debate on how storytelling tecnniques can also be used in other areas like in thesis for students who are in Bachelors degree or in Master. Storytelling can be adapted to new uses instead of just telling stories to people. Marcus explain that the concept and the logic behind Storytelling methods can cover more areas of academic studies. Student can use methods that were create for storytelling on their personal thesis essays. While doing so they learn to organize their ideas better in their work. Storytelling structure follows a logic path that allows people to understand what’s happening and foresee where it will lead them using hints, just like what is used to tell a story. These types of methods can be used for thesis. - Phan, H.Q., Fu, H., Chan, A.B., 2018. Color Orchestra: Ordering Color Palettes for Interpolation and Prediction. IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics 24, 1942–1955. https://doi.org/10.1109/TVCG.2017.2697948 This article explains the approach in the color extraction from an art collection to a form of aesthetic. How the theme of the colors or the color pallete can deeply influence the artwork, giving it different meanings and also change the message that the artist wants to share. Colors are one of the most appealing parts of paintings, it can tell one artist apart from the other just by the way they use color. I find this source useful, because learning how to use colors for my own artistic advance is important. Colors can tell stories and those stories can be used in animation. We realize that the use of colors can create a connection between the audience and the painting, something in the choice of colors can bring an emotion out of someone who is seeing it. Therefore knowing how to use colors is important to communicate with our art.  Smith, V., Hamlyn, N., 2018. Experimental and Expanded Animation: New Perspectives and Practices. Springer International Publishing AG, Cham, SWITZERLAND. -This ebook talks about a new way of creating art, the experimental way. It’s a less conventional form of animation and expressing our ideas. It goes against mainstream cinema and culture and explores new forms of creating art in the animation.  This can take a new form of animation into the world, the experimental. The book says that it’s interesting to experience different experinces of art from different cultures and people. I find this book useful because it’s important to extend our mind further than we think, open it and try to think of new alternatives to our creative work. This book talks about that.  Roseboro, B., n.d. The Vocaloid Phenomenon: A Glimpse into the Future of Songwriting, Community-Created Content, Art, and Humanity 86. This document explains the process of making a music video and more specifically in Vocaloid videos. A lot of thought is put into it, from the lyrics that could have metaphors for the audience and how the music has to align with the lyrics and follow the rhytme without breaking the message.  Lyrics come in a poetry composition, with verses and timings, the lyrics are considered the bones structure of the music video. Everything else like the creative art directing, or the melody would be the mind or the heart of the product. They continue to explain by detailed how the lyrics are thought out and the music behind it, how everything needs to be organized and also creative at the same time to capture the audience attention. I bellieve I can learn a lot with this thesis because it’s something I’m very interested in learning since it explain the process of music video, as well, the order of segments and what softwares are used to achieve the final product. It’s important to know all of this so that I can do it on my own. The main focus is on voicaloids but I can use what I learned from this to put on my own music videos made differently. - Cao, Y., Lau, R.W.H., Chan, A.B., 2014. Look over here: attention-directing composition of manga elements. ACM Trans. Graph. 33, 94:1–94:11. https://doi.org/10.1145/2601097.2601183 This thesis talk about how a japanese is made and what components it has. The visual elements of manga, the different mediuns and programs that people can use to make manga, the composition and the balloon placement. How manga artists have to control the viewers attention, and the direction they read the story, or where to pay longer attention to or lesser attention. They manipulate how the viewer will understand the story, the way they want the view to understand, leading them into plot twists or giving them foreshadowing of events. I believe reading this thesis will help me understand better what is necessary to apply in a manga comic, to have a well structure story, because eventhough the art might be good, without a good composition and a clear reading of the story, viewer won’t stick around to the end. So it’s important to know what key elements to do in the comic while working on it. I quite liked this thesis, it really has everyone someone needs to know about creating a comic, even the shape and size of the characters in the panels and how that influences the viewer reading experience. - Morisawa, T., 2015. Managing the unmanageable: Emotional labour and creative hierarchy in the Japanese animation industry. Ethnography 16, 262–284. https://doi.org/10.1177/1466138114547624 This  articles, explain how life in Japan is. More particulary in the job industry of animators. It explain the ranks of the industry, and how to reach for the higher rank which is being the Director. To become that, they can either start the career by being a  a production operator  or an animator, but one is horrible work, and the other requires abilities and doesn’t pay well. Young animators in Japan  struggle with excessively long hours with little compensation. This articles explains a point of view that the  companies can be compared to a vampire, because they suck the life out of the workers. The articles also explain the thought process between management and creativity in the projects.
Ristola, J., 2017. Blood, Sweat, Ink, and Tears: Exploitation of Labour in the Japanese Animation Industry. This text talks about the  labour conditions of Japanese animators in Japan. They have done research on this topic in different ways, with industry data, and many articles. Which mean they are well informed of this topic in hand. To work in the anime industry it’s important to know about the current trends and what people are more interested in, and it’s important to know the history in anime animation in the television. The first appearance was in the early 1960′s and it evolved from there. I find this article useful for me to learn more about the process of the animation industry and how the workers are treated, it’s a revelant information to have in order to know what to expect. They talk about getting an apprenticeship in Disney and how that can help your career but also know how to face the difficulties that it comes with.   - Full details and actions for Identity in animation: a journey into self, difference, culture and the body [WWW Document], n.d. URL https://www.vlebooks.com/Vleweb/Product/Index/2018732?page=0 (accessed 12.14.20). This book illustrates the importance of an animator’s work and how Animators need to approache an animation in political terms. It’s important to have knowledge of culture as well as knowing about the time and space animation happens. The book explain how animation changes their approach to politics to fit with the mindset of people at the time. They need to know what’s happening in the world and not create sensitive debates in their animations. Politics doesn’t end on just culture, it also involves how people see gender and other topics like that. I believe I can learn a lot with this book, since it explain where animation started and why certain changes were made and the thoughts behind it, it also shows how much thought is put into an animation. Not just story wise but also regardling how the world is and what are the mainstream news. It’s important to keep up with the evolution of human being and know what’s relatable to people or not. Or know how to approach topic and not be blunt, as people can take offense from it. - van Rooij, M., 2019. Carefully Constructed Yet Curiously Real: How Major American Animation Studios Generate Empathy Through a Shared Style of Character Design. Animation 14, 191–206. https://doi.org/10.1177/1746847719875071 This article start by talking about the success of Pixar animation ever since their first featured movie “Toy story”. The article further explains how pixar experimented with a new form of animation, the three dimentional, and the main difference between the two dimentional and the three, was that instead of drawing of a flat image, they must create the whole 3D 360º degree of the character so that they can then rig it and animate it.  Computer-generated imagery (CGI) is which creates the 3D characters into the programs. This article doesn’t only speak about Pixar but also Dreamworks and it compared so on more of Disney companies. This articles can help me have a better understanding of the studios of Disney and how they have evolved their movies or how the industry works. It’s important to know how the big studios work so that we know how to start small, and have knowledge how to do better, following their footsteps and what they did the best and the worse. How their decisions impacts the out come of the animation. - Salim, E., Pooja, K., 2019. Architectural character in conservation design projects [WWW Document]. SHS Web of Conferences. https://doi.org/10.1051/shsconf/20196403008 This text explain the deph into creating a character in a specific enviroment. How the character has to be build from the ground up and possess the content that it was build on. The theme has to be consistent so that the character makes sense in their enviroment, therefore , giving them more sense of space and morals leaving people believe more in that character as they approache a more sense of realism. I find this topic important as my main goal is creating stories and within them character that follow them, I need to learn more the topic of character building. It cannot be random and has to be well thought out as the character has to be build in a foundation to make sense, and keep it consistent in their develpment, changes may occur but the character still needs to come from the same root they were born in. - Skjold, E., 2018. Making sense of dress: On sensory perspectives of wardrobe research [WWW Document]. Artifact. https://doi.org/10.1386/art.5.1.4.1_1 This article explains how the dress code changed along the years, and how people see the dresses and how they are wore. The writer of the article believes that the way of designing a dress gives people different sensations towards it, and depending of the year, different details of the dresses are focused on. For example in the 80′s the dresses were more focused on the patterns and the aesthetic looks and later on 90′s it the focus swifted to the silhoutte that the dress gives the person who wears it. This could say a lot how it’s the society who changes how dresses are seen rather than the dresses themlseves. I find this article useful in many ways, one of them is that knowing the different eras of times, and how differently dresses were wore, it’s important to know the culture of different times in the human history, so that when we create a story in that timestamp we need to know this details to be accurate. It wouldn’t make sense to put a dress that people wear in 2020 in the 80′s. This article also helps me understand the pespective on clothing, and the fashion sense of different times and mentalities.

If even 1/5 of my followers signed up for $1 a month — $12 a YEAR; that’s IT — I would be able to actually make a living for myself. Art and writing is my WORK and I currently make less than $40 USD (≅£31 GBP) a month for all the creative content I share. If you break down the numbers, this means I am currently working for the benefit of you all — the lovely people who enjoy my original content — for about 45¢ (≅35p) an hour, if not less.
I know you might think $1 doesn’t even matter, or lots of other people will probably sign up, or surely I’ll find a “real” job elsewhere. But in fact, $1 does matter. It is YOU I am asking for help, because I only have 18 patrons after 2 years on Patreon. And despite being limited in the jobs I can apply for due to my medical/mobility issues, I’ve applied to over 40 in the past year and have been rejected from all of them. I thought I’d finally gotten a job working in a farmer’s market, but it looks like that’s not going to pan out after all, so I have to keep looking. I won’t be able to work full-time anyway because I’m chronically ill and I’m still taking college classes.
Please kindly consider chipping in $1 a month (or more, if you wish!) via my Patreon. You’ll get to see artworks and poems no one except my patrons see, and you’ll get to hear about what’s coming next before everyone else. It only takes a few minutes to sign up, and once you’re signed up, you don’t have to do anything except enjoy the content that arrives in your preferred email inbox every few weeks. Now is the time to take 5 minutes of your day to support an artist/writer!
💙A.B.
P.S. If you are struggling and truly cannot afford to give up $1 a month, please don’t feel guilty. Your own basic needs and wellness come first. This post is intended for those who ARE financially able to offer support.

FOR WRITERS
The decision to give up the traditional publishing route was taken after a great deal of thought. But what’s it really like going it alone? Multi-genre authors Lexi Miles and A.B. Funkhauser tell all in a candid Q&A.
  1.
You worked within the perimeters of a traditional publisher but opted to go the indie route after the fact. What shaped your decision?
AB: Publishers, large and small, are like any other organization. They have guidelines and rules to follow. You need those, especially when you’re starting out and really don’t know what you’re doing. Friends will call you out on things, and you say to yourself “do they really know?” When your fellow authors at the publisher and the publishing team call you out, you listen because it’s part of the exercise, part of belonging, part of learning. Again, publishers are like all other organizations. Think in terms of a condo association or even a cemetery. (I’m a mortician so I can’t resist including the graveyard.) A condo has rules about what you can and cannot put on the balcony. A cemetery has rules about what kind of florals you place and when they must be removed. Same with the publisher. A publisher will have rules about covers; how they’re supposed to look, how many colors are permitted, what kind of fonts are allowed. This is because the publisher wants to achieve a specific look for its brand. There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s all agreed upon at the time of signing. Indies have the freedom to write their own rules about content, layout, and cover design. I wanted to try that for myself. However, my biggest caution to authors who want to try this is that they not jump in “boots first” but do their research before anything else. It’s a lot of work being your own publisher and promoter. It can get you down if you don’t know what to expect.
Lexi: I felt constricted in many ways from cover art, release dates, and overall content. I also felt like I wanted better promotion for my work and wanted to release more works (not according to the houses allotted schedule). There are a lot of options on every front when you have more freedom.
      2.
What are some of the pluses that come with independence?
Lexi: I am what you call a hybrid author (both traditional and indie). With more independent publishers you have a lot more control over the details of your books. From length to content of the story. Yes, I still adhere to the guidelines of mainstream publishers and work with editors that do the same. Let me offer an example. As a romance author if I don’t want the standard girl meets boy and boy rescues girl scenario, I can have a story that is slightly more imaginative and realistic. I can say that they have a meet cute and she is already strong on her own and he’s not emotionally unavailable (aka robotic). They both meet challenges, but their love and support for each other helps them to conquer them. (Make no mistake, I do love those types of stories. I just like it to have more dimensions.)
AB: The same pluses that come with being your own boss. You can show up to work when you want. You can choose not to work when you want. I tend to go hard when working on a project. From concept to finished manuscript to publishing to marketing. It can be a grind. There are so many theories out there about how often to publish, how best to affect the algorithms. I did that for three years at the end of which time I had to stop for almost a year. I needed to set a new pace for my work and for me as a person. I’m doing that now. It’s wonderful.
    3.
Is there anything you miss about traditional publishing?
AB: I miss the team and the camaraderie. From the moment I signed, they were all there ready to field my untutored questions and reassure me when I got lost. As an indie, I felt like a group of one for a long time, but over time I’ve found other like-mindeds; other indies working toward the same goal: generating quality work and getting it out there. I have peeps again. I don’t feel alone at all.
Lexi: With traditional publishers you have their audience built in. When you release your sales are more predictable, you are releasing to readers who know and trust their brand. Also, in most cases editors come with publishers. The tricky part there is finding one that works well with you and understands the voice of your story. I have a professional editor that I work with either way, so for me I don’t lose anything.
      4.
Some indies create their own imprint or use smaller more independent publishers. Can you tell us why you did that?
Lexi: First, people instantly look for publishers and imprints. It tends to signal quality of work and indicates a more professional work. Two, the freedom. I like being able to control the various aspects of my work and when you go that route you have complete creative freedom. That is an incredibly freeing feeling. That makes me confident to release all of my work because it is the exact voice I want out there.
AB: One of the things I noticed on the book fair circuit was that potential readers would turn the book over and then say, “Oh, you’re independent.” The first couple of times it happened, I took it as an invitation to sell my virtues. The next time it happened, I asked the person what they were looking for and they said, “the publisher.” What is the publisher on the back of a book? It’s the imprint. My imprint is real; it’s registered in my country of origin and all my promo materials carry it plus the Independent Author Seal I designed. But I find having the imprint logo gets me past the first hurdle in a face to face. Rather than say “Oh, you’re indie” they say “Cool” or “What?” and then we can talk about the books. It’s a great icebreaker.
    5.
What advice do you have for authors who wish to follow your example?
AB: If you are already with a publisher, you must ask yourself why you want to DIY and then be prepared to do the research. Do you: know how to format a book; design covers; format your book into all formats (there are a few); know a good printer for your paperbacks; need to hire a professional editor or a professional cover designer; have a budget that can cover all your wants v. your needs; know how to use the advertising features across the platforms; understand the algorithms; have resource people who can guide you? And so on. I don’t want to mislead. It’s daunting.
Lexi: First, write the book. Second, spend time editing so that it is a high quality book. Third, learn the ins and outs of what you need to do to publish it (formatting/covers), protect your work, and promote it. And finally, GO FOR IT!
            6.
What one thing (or things) did you change that leveled up your writing?
Lexi: I am always looking for new ways to level up my writing.
One, I write daily for at least an hour or more. This helps me to stay in a great groove while writing and to get a lot of high quality content in each day. Two, after writing a section, I reread it as well as get outside eyes on it to plug any holes or to help strengthen the storytelling. Three, I utilize lists/charts with a variety of commonly used words (words like more, said, very, etc.) to really help me say it like I want to bring it across (with impact). Four, I spend time in the world that I am writing. It is what I call touch/sense writing. I do this in many ways. I may listen to beach, airport, or car sounds, visit Pinterest for clothing/setting ideas, mimic a scene in some way to bring it to life (ex: workout if my character is working out), drink a beverage like the one in the story, listen to music that defines the character (character playlist), and the list goes on.
AB: I go slow and slow=better. Being my own boss now, I don’t feel the pressure to deliver a new book each year. I wish I could, but I find that if I take the time to send the manuscript out for editing by someone with cred and then shop the cover and blurb for feedback before going to print, I get a more effective piece of work; effective in the sense that I don’t have the goofy spelling errors (pore and pour—OMG!) or awkward paragraph splits to name a couple. It really takes time to catch these things. That means, no more rushing.
    7.
Switching gears a bit, what is the one thing you tend to work into your book when possible?
AB: There are two things that have been there from the get-go. The first is the oft complained about omniscient narrator. Dunno why poor omni is disliked. For me, omni entertains as I create, dropping dollops of knowledge onto the reader above what the characters know. I just love having secret knowledge and sharing that with the reader. The second thing readers will find is treachery of the old Byzantine kind. I’m a history nerd, and old Byzantium—fair or not—is renowned for its ability to hatch incredibly complex plots with ease. I don’t write complex plots per se, what I write are characters who are either complex and don’t know it or presume to be complex and aren’t but credit themselves with being crafty. That’s fun stuff to write and it’s going to be there every time.
Lexi: I like to show that my lead females are not in need of being rescued, but are looking for an intimate partnership. One that makes them stronger and helps both characters face some sort of challenge and to do so by finding the strength in their love. I also like to work in characters big or small that we all have met in our daily lives (judgmental relative, snippy boss, big personality, etc.). A good plot with some sweet or hot romantic moments.
    8.
What is the most rewarding aspect of publishing without a publisher/traditional (indie/smaller house)?
Lexi: I deliver the exact book I envisioned on my terms.
AB: That’s easy: getting to know the other side of the business. I can say this without exaggeration. After getting my first book to market under the new imprint, I was left with the feeling that writing the book was the easy/fun part. The steps required to deliver a quality piece of work (now called “the product”) were numerous, involved and filled with “either/or” choices. I’m looking forward to smoother sailing on the next ones, but that, I’m pretty sure, will take some more time to get to. Learning. Never. Stops.
    9.
What is one aspect of indie publishing you did not expect?
AB: The speedy turn around time with the printer for paperbacks. Learning the formats for all the digital platforms was so all-time consuming that I just assumed that printing would take weeks. It doesn’t. It takes days. But knowing this, I had to slow right down. I had to make sure that the pdf format for the printer was pristine. Sure, they run a preview copy, but I can’t allow myself to get it wrong. That would be a waste of precious paper. It must be absolutely ready to go before I send it to the printer. Turn around can be as fast as 48 hours for a small run.
Lexi: All the work and research that goes into every aspect, especially promoting. When going at it as an indie, even with a publisher’s backing, you have to promote, promote, PROMOTE.
        10.
In what way have you stretched yourself as a writer recently?
Lexi: I write goals daily/weekly and stick to them (writing, promoting, and connecting with readers).
AB: My first six books are blended genre pieces that embrace satire fiction and dark humor. Some, but not all, veer into a literary stream, but that’s more because of the characters’ inclinations. For example, the hopeless romantics go on and on about the trees and what they mean, while the egomaniac sees the end of days when the squirrels arrive. Blended genres are a joy to write, but it’s not always easy to find the audience for them. In fact, it takes years of work to do that. So, for a change, I’ve decided to give pure genre a try. My first mystery, Self-Defense from the Kirsti Brüner Mortuary Mysteries Series, should come out later this summer. It’s kind of a funeral directors drum up business whether the business likes it or not scenario. There’s some grit as well as some laughs to be found in it.
    11.
What is the one thing readers should know when reading one of your books?
AB: Know that I write because I enjoy it and I have a lot of fun doing it. Approach the work with an open mind. Characters, like people IRL, don’t always tell the truth and they won’t go out of their way to help you figure them out. But do know that by the last page, all is explained. It’s important to me to give that.
Lexi: First, thank you for reading it. Second, I hope you connect with it and can see yourself in the story. Third, I have more books due out soon! Four, strap in and enjoy the ride! And finally, there are sure to be a lot of fun, blushworthy, and intense moments. It will be rewarding!

How To Drive More Local Traffic With Your Content
If you have a business that serves the local community hen you will no doubt have an interest in driving people to your website that are within your area. They are far more likely to be interested in your products and/or services and therefore considered valuable targeted traffic. One way to achieve this is with traditional paid advertising campaigns such as Google Ads. PPC networks like this allow you to target specific regions so that your ads are only shown to people located in (or interested in) that that area. But there are other ways to get that traffic.
If you have a website, Google My Business listing or even just a social media profile in some cases, then gearing your content towards your local market is a great way to drive more traffic from Google. With some smart (but not too difficult) local SEO work you could find yourself ranking for keywords in your local area.
This is precisely what we do at WDM when targeting local phrases. For example, 2 of our main services are web design and SEO. Although we have clients as far as the highlands we focus on local terms to get the most benefit from out location. If we target people looking for ‘SEO services in Suffolk‘ or even Bury St Edmunds we have a much greater chance of getting traffic from our local community.
But how can you gear your content towards local search and still stay on topic.
Emil Kristenen from Brightlocal has written a detailed article titled 12 content marketing tips to improve local SEO. The first 6 are shown below.
Content marketing presents a fantastic opportunity for local businesses to properly compete with their big brand competitors. With these tips from Emil Kristensen, on everything from ideation and implementation to setup and promotion, you’ll find creating content for local businesses a joy, not a struggle.
Run the site of a local business? Looking to grow SEO and bring in local customers?
You might not have considered it, but content marketing might actually be the missing piece in your promotion puzzle.
Many SEOs who working with local businesses overlook content marketing as a viable strategy, believing it’s only suitable for major brands with national or international reach, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
While these “big fish in a big pond” brands can do well with content marketing, the “small pond” of local search is usually easier to master and can mean big changes for your local business.
Today, you’ll learn exactly which types of topics will resonate well with your audience. Next, we’ll cover how to set up your content for SEO success and conclude with ways you can expand your reach around the web and grow your email list.
Let’s get started!
What to Write About for Local Content
We’ll begin with the biggest question most local SEO users ask: what can I write about for a local audience?
The answer may surprise you. There are thousands of topics your audience would love to hear about—as many, if not more, than you could write for a global brand.
Any topic of general interest can be tailored for your community. In addition, there are community-specific topics you can communicate to readers as well.
Here’s how to find a winner every time.
 1. Follow What’s Hot in Your Area
The first and most flexible source is to use topics that are already popular in your area. You know they’ll succeed because they’ve already succeeded!
One of the best tools to use for this is Google Trends. If you’ve never used Google Trends before, it’s essentially a tool to track the popularity of search terms and topics.
But the beauty of Google Trends is that not only can you look up terms by time, you can also search for each region. This lets you see what your or your client’s specific local audience is interested in.
Let’s use a classic local business as an example: a florist
(You’ll notice “florist” as a search term and “Florist” as a topic are separate options. The first is a direct phrase typed into Google, and the second includes multiple phrases. Both can be useful, but we’ll use the topic in this example.)
Here, you can see the history of this term for the past 12 months. This is a great way to see trends you might not have thought of before. For example, you may know that Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day are busy times for florists.
But did you know those times get four times the number of searches than usual?
Now, let’s break down this data by location. In the upper-left corner, you can select a specific area. We’ll choose the US.
Now, we can find a state. Let’s use Texas for this example.
And finally, we can select a specific city or zone. We’ll use El Paso.
And now, we can see the popularity of “florist” searches just in the El Paso area. The graph is similar, but not identical, with smaller peaks throughout the year.
You can use this data to guide your content strategy. Noticing a dip in the summer, a florist might write a guide for creative Fourth of July decor in El Paso—including flowers, of course.
Another huge area for content ideas is the “related queries” box, below the graph. Here you’ll find similar searches from people in your area, which you can leverage to create some amazing pieces of content.
For example, if you offer pest control services in Colorado, a lot of the search queries are asking for reviews of local companies.
A content page reviewing the top pest control companies (including yours, of course!) would do quite well for local SEO.
 2. Expand FAQs into Content Pieces
This is usually one of the simplest ways to create content, and it can be some of the best information readers are looking for. The technique is simple: expand FAQs into blogs, videos, or other content.
If you install inground pools, for example, you probably get the same questions over and over. What do they cost? What types are best? How long will they take to install?
Sure, you can answer this on an FAQ page (and might already have). But consumers are likely searching for these questions, and you could find new prospects by expanding a two-line answer to a full blog post.
Virginia-based River Pools does this perfectly, with an in-depth buying guide for inground pools.
They go all out, too—the guide includes multiple videos, a pricing calculator, an infographic, and even a downloadable PDF eBook.
 3. Write up Customer Case Studies and Interviews
Another simple content type that can do very well is customer stories. If you already have testimonials on your site, flesh out the story with details and statistics proving your product’s success. (If you don’t have the data on hand, reach out to the customers again for a follow-up interview.)
As you write, remember a few pointers. First, find a unique angle that keeps it interesting. And second, make it about the customer. Yes, they used your product or service, but focus on how they achieved success.
The best case studies typically start off by introducing a likeable person or brand, present a challenge, show the solution, and wrap it up with the success he or she achieved.
As an example, here’s a case study from Facebook Ads for eCommerce retailer Netshoes.
They start by explaining Netshoes, providing the backstory, and building up the characters of the founders.
Next, they show the challenge—Netshoes wanted to increase conversions for Black Friday and beyond.
The solution was a creative campaign using Facebook Ads and memes.
Their campaign was a success—and Facebook has the data to prove it.
The best strategy to get this data is to conduct live interviews. This way, you’ll get a more natural conversation with interesting anecdotes and quotes. You can then trim the conversation down and pull out the best pieces to use in the case study.
Transcribing a lot of interviews can be tedious, though. If you just want a tool that will help you, check out oTranscribe. It won’t transcribe the audio automatically, but it makes manual transcription a much faster process with keyboard shortcuts and an intuitive interface.
  4. Write About Local Events and Activities
One of the best solutions for local content is the most obvious: get involved in the community. Attend local events and activities, and write about them on your blog.
This is a strategy that requires consistency. As you get more involved in your area, you’ll become something of a local expert, and your pieces will have more weight.
 5. Target Related but Non-Competitive Niches
At a certain point, you’ll hit a wall. It will feel like there’s nothing left to say about your topic!
If you’re struggling to think of something new to say, the answer might just be to expand your reach. One of the best ways to do this is with a related niche that doesn’t compete with you—also known as a shoulder niche.
A great tool for this is RelatedWords.org. It’s a simple site with lots of possibilities. You’ll get a huge selection of related concepts based on the words you type in.
For example, let’s try “beauty salon.”
In addition to synonyms like “beauty parlor,” you can find shoulder niches like personal stylists, lingerie shops, and art galleries.
You might not have thought of these before, but you can easily combine them into your content strategy—and attract a whole new audience.
For example, interview a local personal stylist for the best outfits to go with a retro hairstyle, or feature an “on the town” list of spas, cafes, or art galleries to explore after the perfect cut.
 6. Explain What’s Unique About Your Area and Services
Chances are, you know more about your local area than the average resident—and certainly more than visitors or those who have just relocated. Use that expertise!
Explain what’s special about your area, and tie it into your services. For example, Kansas City HVAC company A.B. May published an article about the coldest cities in the U.S., a list that includes Kansas City.
It’s interesting, relevant to the HVAC industry, and puts Kansas City front and center.
Another way to directly target your local audience with content is by utilising your ‘Google My Business’ listing. We’ve talked a lot recently about GMB’s as it’s become a fantastic way to generate local traffic and is a big part of our own marketing strategy (we add a new post to our own GMB listing every working week day).
The way Google handles and prioritises GMB listings is a little different to traditional SEO and you do need to keep your finger on the pulse. We cover this in more detail in our GMB Ranking Guidelines. Just a few days ago (at the time of writing this) a display change was made that shows GMB post content within the result.
One of our favourite local SEO authors Jamie Pitman writes about it here…
Google Posts might have recently been relegated by Google to the bottom of the knowledge panel, but a discovery this week shows that this definitely doesn’t mean Google is dismissing this valuable element of Google My Business.
Across the Local SEO community, people have started seeing the truncated text of Google Posts in businesses’ Local Finder and Local 3-pack listings. Dave DiGregorio first spotted it in a search for ‘chicago foreclosure lawyer’ and from there it’s developed into a fascinating and ongoing thread over at Local Search Forum.
At first it seemed others were unable to replicate the appearance of Google Post information in the Local Finder, but soon Joy Hawkins discovered a raft of instances using BrightLocal’s screenshot feature of its Local Search Rank Checker tool. Others have since chimed in, seeing instances live and for several industries, including medical and law.
Can I influence what appears in the Local Pack?
Google uses the Local 3-pack and Local Finder to present the business information that most closely matches the search term or search intent, as well as critical details such as address (if applicable), opening hours, review rating and count, and contact info.
This is why there’s no hard and fast rule about what will appear in these already very crowded boxes. Google has the user in mind, and so it will show everything it can to prove that the business it’s listed in the top 3 has a right to be there, based on the search term. You can’t influence the extra elements that appear in the Local Pack but you can make sure your GMB strategy is broad enough to encompass everything from subjective attributes to Google Q&As.
 Why is Google doing this?
While there has been the customary lack of official word from Google on this, I would assume that they are starting to use Google Posts as another way to recognize entity attributes and more easily surface relevant businesses for the search term.
Other entity recognition elements that we’ve seen appear in Local Finder results include:
Google Review content
Google My Business description
Categories and sub-categories
‘From the website’ (website-scraping)
Some potential entity recognition elements that we’ve seen in some places in which results are surfaced (e.g. the Google Maps app) but not yet the Local Finder include:
Google My Business Q&As
Subjective and objective attributes
Third-party reviews
With so many different sources of information vying for attention, instances in which Google Posts rise to the surface in the Local Finder and 3-pack could be resulting from some of the others having a little less weight in Google’s eyes or less relevance to the search term.
For instance, if a bridal outfitting business only has a few reviews, and none mention ‘bridesmaid’s dresses’, a reasonably recent Google Post talking about a new stock of bridesmaid’s dresses might be enough to push the listing into the 3-pack for a bridesmaid-related search term (perhaps provided there isn’t a great deal of info on this on the website, either).
One other theory I have, that was also touched upon in the thread resulting from Dave DiGregorio’s original tweet, is that wider use of Google Posts is part of Google’s post-Google+ plan*. If Google My Business is becoming more of a way for businesses to interact with their audiences (as seen with last year’s addition of a ‘follow’ button), there’s every chance this use of Google Posts in the 3-pack is an indicator of even bigger plans for GMB as a social network for business.

If you really want to see how your content can effect you local SEO positioning then here’s a great (just over 20 minute) video on how it works:

In short, if you’re not producing content for your business on a regular basis then you’re most likely losing customers. If you’re writing yourself then build some time in to your daily schedule. If you’re outsourcing then get on a regular content production schedule with your writer. You won’t see results immediately but in most cases your will start to see a benefit within 3-6 months.
