Happy New Year {Triplet Ben x Reader} Pt. One
A/N~ As the title says Happy New Year everyone! In this last year alone this blog has come so far and it’s all thanks to you guys and I cant thank yall enough. I love each one of you! This is just part one of what I’m calling a Cinderella-esque au. I worked hard on this and would have quit after the first three paragraphs it wasn’t for Fae, so I gotta thank her for putting up with me and being the true MVP. I hope you guys enjoy this and once again, happy new year!
You didn’t want to be here in the first place and now; tucked away in a nook between the fireplace and nearest corner with a folding chair, you REALLY didn’t want to be here.
“I’ll stay with you all night,” Poe had promised. “We'll drink and eat our weight in expensive cheese, it’ll be fun!”
But five minutes through the door and Poe may as well have been the name of your imaginary friend.
Party goers draped themselves over couches and armchairs, positioned towards the flat screen mounted on the wall. Some you knew, most you didn’t. Half full champagne flutes and plastic plates adorned with cracker crumbs and nibbled cheese litter the coffee table, that someone’s child had conveniently fallen asleep under. The sheer volume of people contained in one house made the air uncomfortably hot and stuffy, the only provision of relief is the opening of the front door, allowing cold air to escape through, and the Pumpkin Spice candle glowing on the mantelpiece you could catch a whiff of every now and then.
Who even has time, or the money for that matter, to throw a party like this?
As if in response you find three portraits of identical boys, hanging over the sofa. Except for one maybe, the far left portrait shows a boy with blonde hair and glasses, but his face looks all the same as the others. Each one is perfectly posed and picturesque, looking like deities up there watching over their domain.
Yes, the Solo’s; they’re the only ones capable of pulling off a new year party for the entire city.
Digging the toe of your shoe into the living room's pristine white carpet, you listen to the background bustle of the party. The TV broadcasts Time’s Square, a girl’s shrill birdlike laugh, conversations about weather and new years resolutions, a glass breaks somewhere in the kitchen. Each sound piles on top of one another until a buzz becomes a suffocating roar in your ears. Maybe you should just leave.
“Well don’t you look like you’re having so much fun.”
A woman’s voice catches your attention. She’s short, greying hair tied up in an elegant braid that curls into a bun at the back of her head. She’s covered head to toe in party glitter and holds a glass between her slender wrinkled hands.
“I was actually just leaving,” you say standing from your seat.
A frown appears on the women's thin lips, “And leave all this?” she opens her arms to the party behind her, but you only shrug.
“Parties have never really been my thing. Besides, I don’t really know anyone here.”
“You sound like my son,” she pauses, tucking a stray hair behind her ear and looking past you in thought. “How about I introduce you to someone?” she finally says. “MATT, HONEY!”
The woman turns away, shouting over the noise before you could even protest. Curious eyes all over the room train on you and you found yourself suddenly wishing the floor would open and swallow you whole.
A young man appears from the kitchen with blonde curly hair and sporting glasses you’d expect to find in your grandfather’s drawer.
“My boy Matty will take good care of you, he’s a sweetheart.”
As Matt approaches his face becomes familiar and you can feel the watchful stares of the three smiling portraits.
Shit--
You’d come face to face with the party hostess herself and you hadn’t even known it. Not only that but she’d probably caught you digging your feet into her nice carpet; the upkeep for that cant be cheap. A quick glance down and you thank God you hadn’t left a mark on the white fibers.
“Matt, this is--” Leia trails off, you take it as your que.
“Y/N.”
Holding out his hand, Matt offers you a warm smile as you take it. “I’m Matt,” he says squeezing your hand hand gently rather than shaking it like you’d expected. “Nice to meet you.”
You nod, nearly forgetting your manners before stuttering out, “N-nice to meet you too.”
“Okay then,” Leia says retreating back through the living room towards the kitchen, her glass now empty. “You two have fun now!”
If you’d thought the portraits were intimidating, it was nothing in comparison to actually being in the presence of one of them. Solo is a name on everyone’s lips; with Leia Organa~Solo in congress and her husband as a renowned racing coach, who didn’t know of the Solo’s?
“So--nice party.”
Matt nods happily, sunny curls bouncing with the action. “Mom throws a party for every occasion! Oh, do you mind?” he holds up a camera hanging around his neck, “taking pictures is my job for the night.”
“Um,” you fluff out your hair, angling your best side forward. “I-uh. I guess.”
He smiles again at your display, finding you in the camera lense and adjusting it to focus.
Click
Matt looks at the digital screen and turns it around so you can see too, “Perfect.” he smiles again, something he seemed unable to stop doing. Had you not felt so intimidated you may have found Matt to be rather charming.
You’re suddenly interrupted by someone of similar stature and appearance, save for his dark hair that was barely long enough to hang in his eyes, and curled around his ears.
“Who’s this Matty?” his tone is almost teasing as he ruffles Matt’s perfectly groomed hair.
Another Solo, surely.
Matt doges out of his brother’s reach, patting his hair back down before responding. “This is Y/N.”
“Y/N?” he gives you a once over. “I’m Ben.”
Ben.
“Hi.”
Whereas Matt exude a gentle, meek kind of aura, Ben radiated confidence; like he was hot shit, and he knew it. His smile was like that of a movie star, flashing his teeth accompanied with a look that says he only smiles like that for you. Of course you knew that to be bullshit, he had to be giving everyone that same treatment; it’s part of his charm. This did nothing for your nerves.
Ben hadn’t taken his eyes off you nor had he said anything more; staring you down as if he expected you to do something, like a trick monkey.
“Do you want a drink?” he asks, tearing his gaze away from you to look around the living room.
Half of you wanted Matt to intervene in some way but he’d disappeared, probably to fix his hair.
“Okay.”
“Follow me, kid.” he says, sauntering through the maze of bodies and furniture like he owned the place, granted he did.
After fetching you a drink from the kitchen in his mother’s finest champagne glass, Ben lead you from group to group coagulating around his home. Gina, Debbie, Laura, Jessica, and something that started with a L; all from a sorority a few blocks away. Dan, Myra, and someone that was definitely a sasquatch; Family members of his mother’s colleagues. Group after group, Ben introduced you to people whose names you'd probably wouldn’t remember, and each time he filled your glass with more of that bubbling, silvery liquid you became a little more sure of that.
As it got later and Ben ran out of people to dangle you in front of, you found yourself on the Solo’s balcony overlooking their backyard. Below you the pool was covered for the winter season, a lonely looking set of chairs surrounding a table with a light blanket of snow over each one. Dead shrubs line the fence surrounding their yard and you can't help but to imagine what kind of parties they host down there when the weather is warm.
“You know, I’m never going to remember all those people.” you say, kicking back the remnants of your last drink, your head spinning as you set the glass down on a table behind you.
Ben shrugs as he leans over the railing, resting his forearms on the deck’s wood fencing. “Yeah, me either.”
“I don’t even like parties,” you started, “they’re so loud, and busy, and- and I wouldn’t have even come if it wasn’t for my dumb friend, but he ditched me and then your mom found me, and somehow I ended up with you.”
Ben tilted his head looking at you from the corner of his eyes as you rambled on and on, but he didn’t seem to mind; he was a little tipsy himself.
“And then we met all those people,and-um- I don't really remember what happened after that, but now i'm here but you know something Ben?” you didn’t give him time to answer, “I had a really good time.”
He turns to you now, still leaning on the rail; more for support than anything else, his words lazily spilling from his lips. “You know what, kid? I did too.”
His statement made you warm inside, or was that just the liquor? You couldn’t tell anymore, you couldn’t tell anything anymore. How long have you been here? Where did Poe go? How are you getting home?
Wait a minute.
You looked over at him, “Did you just call me kid?”
He laughs, rolling his shoulders with a shrug, “I've been calling you kid all night.”
“You have?”
He pauses, “I think so.”
Leaning back against the railing, you let the cool air attempt to clear your head. Now you remember, he’s definitely been calling you kid. Like right before he’d told you to hold his glass so he could invite his much more athletic cousin to a handstand challenge.
“Shit.” Ben hisses under his breath, pushing himself up to his full height and adjusting his cotton blue t shirt.
Your first instinct is to look over the balcony, thinking he’s dropped something. “What?”
“It’s almost midnight.”
“So?” It was just a time, and here he had your drunken mind panicking.
“So,” he says looking back to the house in urgency. “I haven’t found anyone to kiss. You know, New Years and shit?”
“Oh,” your shoulders fell, relaxing back onto the rail. “Can’t relate.”
He looks surprised, perking at your words. “You’ve never kissed anyone on New Years?”
“No, why would I?”
“Because it’s- it’s tradition, like good luck or something,” he waves his hands around, grasping for the true meaning but comes up empty. “I’ve been doing it for years, find a girl, kiss her and never talk to her again.”
The thought is appalling. Why kiss someone you’ll never talk to again, it sounds almost sad and as he says it, his typically cheery self loses its luster; a certain kind of sadness is hidden behind his brown eyes.
“Well,” You check the time, 11:58; it was running out. “You can kiss me.”
Ben turns on you, maybe a little to fast because his tall frame sways twice before stabling out. “What?”
“You can kiss me,” You say again. “You won't find someone in time, especially as drunk as you are.”
You take his hand as he starts to sway again, and he doesn’t pull away. Instead he looks down at your joined hands, linking your fingers together before making up his mind. “Okay.”
From deep in the house you faintly hear the cheers of people as the ball drop began on tv. Ben stepped closer, hearing it too.
5
His free hand found the side of your face, cupping your cheek as you shuddered against touch.
4
Your eyes looked up to his when you felt his thumb brush your cheekbone. His eyes held admiration as they traveled your face, but maybe you were just being hopeful.
3
Taking this moment to memorize him, you noted each little freckle and mole decorating his skin, the way his haircut handsomely framed his face; that was probably intentional by design.
2
“Are you ready?” he says quietly, breath smelling sweet like the champagne you’d been drinking all night.
He licked his lips, you nodded doing the same.
1
That’s it. Ben presses his lips to yours, and you expect him to pull away just as quickly but he doesn’t, and suddenly it's not a simple New Years kiss anymore it’s something more. You can feel it. Fingers thread into his hair as he pulls you in closer, you whimper into the softness of his mouth. The dizzy feeling you'd had earlier was nothing like the spinning your head was doing now as you dived deeper and deeper into each other.
A firework explodes in the distance and Ben pulls away, you absentmindedly chase after him immediately missing the contact, but he’s too tall.
With cheeks tinted pink, and a little breathless, he speaks. “Happy New Year.”

8 Tips for Creating a Relaxing Home
It seems like everyone wants a home that feels like a retreat: an environment that’s soothing, uplifting, and beautiful. Many of us are taking inspiration from the Danish word hygge (pronounced hoo-gah), which is all about creating a cozy home that inspires connection and a sense of well-being. Natural fibers, pale colors, and lights with a soft, warm glow are hallmarks of this style.
Others are embracing minimalism, paring down their possessions to the essentials that make them happy, as advised by Marie Kondo. As she likes to say, only surround yourself with objects that "spark joy." The idea has been so popular that charities received record levels of clothing and housewares donations in 2018 and 2019.
8 Tips For Creating a Relaxing Home
Whether you live in a studio apartment, condo, or house, it’s easy to make your home an oasis of calm by following these strategies.
1. Eliminate Clutter
There are many reasons to have an organized, clutter-free home. You’ll save time because you can find your keys and phone easily. And you won’t waste money buying duplicate items because you can't find the other one! Did you know clutter in the home can even create anxiety?[1]
Start by decluttering main areas like the kitchen, office, living room, dining room, and bedrooms. Bag up anything you haven’t used in a year or two; chances are you won’t even miss it. Tackle the closet with a good friend, and donate clothes that don’t fit, are out of style, or are unflattering.
Consider getting rid of anything that doesn’t make you smile or bring a pleasant memory or thought — even if it was a gift. You can still be grateful for the spirit behind the gift without keeping the object.
Donate everything to charity and feel good knowing someone else can benefit from your former treasures. You’ll be left with a home full of lovely items that make you feel good when you see them.
2. Embrace Cozy: The Hygge Way
The Danes have a concept known as hygge, which — while not easily translated to a single word — embraces the notion of "cozy." From a warm cup of tea to gathering around the fire, the concept of hygge makes Denmark’s long winters more pleasant.
It’s such a defining part of the Danish way of life that Meik Wiking, author of "The Little Book of Hygge" and CEO of the Happiness Research Institute, wrote that hygge is to Danes what freedom is to Americans.
Hygge is about keeping things simple and inviting warmth and friendship. It’s no wonder that Denmark ranks among the happiest countries in the world! Though conceptualized for winters, you can practice hygge year-round. The decor involves a minimalist style with natural fabrics and pale neutrals.
Fire and warmth are essential components of hygge. Having a fireplace is great, but candles are an important component as well. Throw blankets are another easy, cost-effective way to add coziness and comfort to your home.
Some things don’t create a sense of hygge, such as staring at your phone all day. Instead, wrap up with your cozy knit throw around a fire, put on some thick socks, and spend the evening reading or catching up with a friend.
3. Employ the Healing Power of Nature
Let the sunlight in! Also, open the windows regularly to refresh the air in your home. The healing power of nature is one component of the hygge approach. Many of the same tenets underlie biophilic design, a science-backed approach focused on natural materials that support wellness.
Opt for pillows, rugs, towels, and clothing made from minimally processed wool, silk, cotton, and linen. Stock your kitchen with glass and ceramics, rather than plastics. Extend that same ethos to your furniture, seeking out pieces made from wood and natural fabrics, which look timeless. Plus, minimally processed natural materials won’t release harmful volatile organic compounds.
Choose cotton or silk sheets with a wool mattress topper to draw heat and moisture away from your body. A bed topped with wool, silk, or cotton will keep you cooler than foam, which holds heat. Plus, foam is made with petroleum, so it releases toxins and bad smells.
Green plants are an essential part of a soothing home environment. Just seeing ferns and other green plants can make you feel calmer and happier.
4. Decorate With Harmonious Colors
Painting your entire home with a complementary color palette helps set a tranquil tone. "If you have a lot of bright colors and there’s no continuity, it creates a clashing feeling," says Curt F., a residential developer who lives in California’s Sonoma wine country. "Each room should flow from one room to the next, so everything works together."
Some designers suggest choosing a favorite piece of fabric you like and drawing all the colors in your home from that palette. If you like pale colors, choose non-toxic white paint colors with different tints, mixed with neutrals such as tan, taupe, and wood tones.
Blue, a primary color from the sky and ocean, instills a peaceful atmosphere, and blue light during the day can help your body relax more quickly.[2]
5. Turn Your Bath Into a Spa
Even when you’re doing everything you can to stay balanced and healthy, life’s little aggravations can get to you. When that happens, unwind by turning your bath into a mini spa.
Put houseplants and naturally-scented candles in your bathroom. Draw a hot bath and add a few drops of your favorite calming essential oils like lavender, chamomile, rose, or ylang-ylang. Next, dump a cup of plain Epsom salt in the water — they’re loaded with magnesium to relax your muscles.
Dim the light, turn on your relaxation playlist, and sip some tulsi tea, which one researcher called "liquid yoga" for its calming and mind-clearing effects.[3, 4] You can also try valerian, a time-tested herb for restful slumber. Global Healing’s Organic Valerian Raw Herbal Extract™ can help you fall asleep and stay asleep longer, without any grogginess the next day.
Afterward, put on a soft cotton robe, settle into a comfy chair, and spritz your face with Aquaspirit®, our refreshing facial mist.
6. Design the Perfect Bedroom
Think of your bedroom as a sanctuary for sleep and sex — that’s it. Banish the TV from your sleeping space, and charge your phone elsewhere. Electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) from phones and tablets can disrupt brain waves in some people.[5] Others even turn off their Wi-Fi signal during sleep hours.[6]
Consider painting the walls of your bedroom a deep, dreamy shade of blue, which encourages relaxation.[7] Up the ante with blackout curtains. As bedtime approaches, unwind by reading a book while sipping tea with a few drops of valerian extract.
Boost your relaxation level with an eye mask or a scent diffuser with lavender essential oil. And be sure to keep things cool in the bedroom, since it’s easier to drift off to sleep when the temperature is between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit.
7. Set the Mood With Sound
Listening to soothing music, whether you like New Age, classical, or folk, can reduce the heart rate.[8] Create a playlist of your favorite soothing songs — anything with 60 to 80 beats per minute induces relaxation.
"To me, music really creates a mood. Life should have a soundtrack," says Curt F. "I like to start out the day with music that’s going to give a sense of peace, calm, and tranquility," he says of his playlist, which is similar to spa music.
If you want to create a soothing soundscape that’s less distracting than music, try nature sounds of wind, water, or chirping birds. Listening to sounds like these shifts the brain from the stressed-out fight-or-flight status to calm parasympathetic mode. The tenser you are, the bigger the potential drop in heart rate and blood pressure. Not to mention that listening to nature leads to better sleep.[9]
8. Prime Yourself to Relax
One of the essential steps in creating a relaxing home is priming yourself to reap the benefits — which include less stress and better sleep. Make sure you’re taking care of your mind, body, and spirit.
Eat a balanced diet with lots of organic vegetables and fruit, along with probiotics and gut-friendly foods. Did you know that having a healthy population of flora in your digestive tract can have a powerful effect on your mood and mental state? Then you can relax in your home environment, making the most of your days and evenings.
Consider resetting your system with a colon cleanse if you’ve been overeating meat, sugary foods, alcohol, or bread. Set aside time regularly for meditation, a spiritual practice, and physical exercise, such as yoga, Pilates, or a brisk walk in nature.
Remember that all these suggestions are cumulative. Once you start clearing out the clutter, bringing in nature, and making other changes, you’ll notice that you’re feeling calmer at home.
Points to Remember
There are many things you can do to create a more relaxing home. Eliminate clutter and unneeded possessions, then decorate with cooling, comfortable natural materials like cotton, wool, silk, and wood. Use green plants liberally. Paint your entire home in harmonious colors so rooms flow together seamlessly.
When tension mounts, unwind in a spa-style bath with essential oils, Epsom salt, and tulsi tea. Make your bedroom a tech-free sanctuary that’s dark, cool, and only for sleep or intimacy. Create a calm mood with a playlist of songs with 60 to 80 beats per minute.
Most of these steps will work best to relax you if you prime your body and mind for relaxation by eating healthfully and getting regular exercise. Follow these steps, and your home will become an inviting, tranquil, and healing space.

The Ultimate Guide of Living Room Design Ideas for Small Spaces
Is your living room starting to feel a little cramped? Having trouble coming up with new ideas for how to maximize your living space? Don't worry; the following guide of small living room design ideas is sure to give you the inspiration you need to get your living room looking great in no time at all!
Think About Function
There are a wide range of living room design ideas to be found in this guide. The simple truth of the matter is that there's no "one size fits all" solution when it comes to sharing design ideas for living rooms. And we mean that both literally and figuratively: just as everyone has their own personal taste and style, each home comes with its own unique space requirements.
It's important to consider how you'd like your living room to function when approaching these living room design on a dime ideas. Are you the life of the party, always inviting guests over? Or do you and your significant other like to spend the evenings with a "Netflix and chill" session? Depending on the answers to questions like these, your living room may look radically different. Determining whether you're looking for a cozy place to relax after a long day at work or an impressive, elegant living room are important steps in any living room redesign.
Equally important to consider is the fact that no living room is created equally in terms of built-in features. Some readers will most assuredly want living room design ideas with fireplace and TV accommodations. Others will no doubt be seeking ways to highlight specific pieces of furniture that they already own. Have no fear! Whether you're looking for living room design ideas on a budget or small living room design ideas and photos, this guide will give you the information you need to get your living room looking great on a budget!
Living Room Design Ideas for Small Spaces
One of the number one reasons you may be looking to maximize your space is because you live in a small residence or your living room itself is small. The following tips, tricks, and ideas are formulated with small rooms in mind, and are particularly useful if you're on the hunt for living room design ideas for apartments, where space is often at a premium, especially in the city.
One of the best living room design ideas for small apartments is to keep things open. There are a few ways to do this, but the basic psychology comes down to keeping things open so as to avoid a cluttered or cramped feeling. The following small living room design ideas and photos are sure to excite you as you consider the different ways you can conquer your small space!
Wall Living Room Design Ideas for Small Living Rooms
You don't want to clutter your living room with a lot of framed artwork, especially if the walls themselves aren't the biggest. Making this interior design mistake is a major no-no, and can lead to a claustrophobic or chaotic feeling in your living room. Definitely not the vibe most of us are looking for out of our living space.
Living Room Mirrors to Open Things Up
Instead of filling walls with pictures, posters, and paintings, create the illusion of more space by using mirrors. The optical illusion created by hanging a large mirror over the back of your couch can go a long way in creating a more open space.
This Frameless Wall Mirror from Amazon is a great example of how even a smaller mirror can help to create the feeling of more space. It’s versatile enough to hang vertically or horizontally and comes with heavy duty mounting supplies to ensure that it stays hanging for many years to come.
Another, more decorative option for wall mirrors is this 48 piece set from Arlens. They’re easy to stick to the walls and self-adhesive making them a quick, affordable, and stylish choice for anyone with a creative side looking to create visual interest with a unique, geometric art effect.
Living Room Shelves Provide Functional Style
Keep things organized with a few shelves on your wall, but don't go overboard with what you put on them! Remember that keeping things organized is a priority for contributing to a more expansive feeling living room, but don't go so minimal that it looks like you just moved in either! A few well-placed knick-knacks or conversation pieces, as well as a curated selection of books, can go a long way in adding character to your living room.
Floating U-Shelves
Floating U-Shelves like this set of 3 from Greenco are a great way to keep things organized and classy. Coming in three different sizes (small, medium, and large), these shelves look great and let you display some of your key possessions without giving you the quantity or size to go overboard.
Umbra Floating Bookshelf
Looking for a real statement piece? Look no further than the Umbra Conceal Floating Bookshelf, which has to be one of the coolest ways to display your favorite books. Featuring hardware that is hidden as you stack books on top of them, these are sure to start conversations when you have friends and family over.
Accent Furniture Makes The Place Yours
In a small space, every piece of furniture counts. There are two things to keep in mind when picking furniture for your living room: form and function. Form is the fun thing to consider: which of these pieces best exemplifies your style? A funky armchair or other piece of accent furniture can really create a focal point in the room, and also give you directions to consider when it comes to tying the room together with a cohesive color palate or pattern.
Get Stylish With This Parisian Accent Chair
This super trendy, Paris-inspired accent chair and ottoman from Coaster Home Furnishings is both cute and functional. If you’re looking to turn a corner of your living room into a fantastic reading nook, this chair and ottoman are a great choice to relax in. And, since the chair’s pattern is in black and white, you still have a neutral piece to match a living room of any color!
Keep Your Furniture Versatile
Equally as important is to consider the function of your furniture. Can any piece of furniture serve two purposes? Or three? Consider looking into furniture with extra storage built in as a sneaky way to keep things clean and organized. If they also fit the bill in terms of stylishness, then you've got yourself a double slam dunk!
This Convertible Coffee and Dining Table Does Double Duty
It’s a coffee table, it’s a dining table, it’s both! Dorel Living’s Faux Marble Lift Top Coffee Table may be one of the coolest things in this guide. Packing versatility, storage, and ease of use into one sleek package, this is one flexible piece of furniture!
More Sneaky Storage
In addition to the coffee table / dining room table above, consider getting some of the following sneaky storage solutions for your small living room as well! Convenience Concepts makes a storage ottoman that you would swear is just a well-constructed ottoman, and we’d be remiss not to mention this storage side table from Safavieh American Home Collection, which packs multiple styles and sizes of drawers into an affordable, elegant design.
Living Room Ideas With Fireplace As Focal Point
A fireplace is a great, natural focal point for any living room, whether or not it’s working. Don’t plan on on using your fireplace? If so, consider using it to store books or records in a unique way. Planning on using it when it gets cold? The mantle is a prime place for adding some stylish accent pieces or displaying that unique stamp collection you have framed.
Accenting or changing mantles, mantle decoration, and even using some unique book ends on your mantle are all quick and easy ways to bring your fireplace to life in new ways.
Designing With Your Sofa In Mind
It's amazing how many people are searching for living room design ideas and tips centered around their sofas or couches. While much of the general wisdom surrounding matching specific aspects of your interior design around a central color still prevail regardless of the color of your couch, there is still value in breaking it down and sharing some tips based on a few of the most popular sofa colors from around the world.
Living Room Ideas With Brown Sofa
The brown sofa is one of the classic color choices for living rooms, and its versatility is greatly rewarded when it comes to living room design. Whether your couch is a loveseat or a sectional, its brown color is going to pair great with anything in a natural wood. The darker your couch, the darker you’ll want the wood to be. Taking a look at entertainment units and bookcases in birch, cherry, or oak is a great place to start looking.
Living Room Design Ideas Grey Couch
Grey is a great color to pair cooler colors with. Take a look at keeping things chill in your living room by pairing your grey sofa with some turquoise or light blue pillows, or even a rug that accents the grey of your couch. You can also add in touches of silver or stainless steel to the hardware of any furniture you have in your living room for a subtle match that really ties the room together.
Living Room Design Ideas Green Sofa
You’d be surprised how many living rooms feature a green sofa (unless you’re one of the owners of one)! Green is a super fun color choice for a living room no matter how light or dark the shade of green. The number one tip for decorating around a green sofa is to include lots of natural, earthy tones in everything else. It’s for this reason in particular that a green sofa can look great on a dark hardwood floor as well as on lighter, beiges and creams. Including an earthy rug with geometric patterns in varying browns and whites is a great accent to any green couch.
Living Room Divider Design Ideas
Especially in smaller apartments with fewer rooms, it can be a popular and useful design choice to help partition a living room with a room divider. Particularly in one-bedroom apartments and studios, this technique can allow you to have the best of both worlds, offering privacy and a communal space to entertain with one affordable solution.
Some of the simplest room dividers are curtains; however, lower-to-the-ground bookcases and shelving units can also separate a room into specific living areas. Another popular option for dividing a room is a tall, cubicle unit, like OneSpace’s modular, stackable cube organizer, which allows you to display and organize at the same time!
Living Room Design Ideas with Hardwood Floors
Many apartments in the city feature hardwood floors, which can be tricky to design around. We’ve already talked about how certain pieces of furniture (like a green couch) look great on hardwood floors, but what are some other options for making the most of your small living room’s hardwood floors?
Area Rugs
Rugs and carpets can be a great way to create some visual differentiation in your living room while simultaneously drawing attention to the natural beauty of your hardwood floors. The juxtaposition of these contrasting floor elements can really make a room look well-designed and put together. Utilizing a quality area rug is money well spent when it comes to maximizing the value of your dollars during a living room interior makeover. Ottomanson makes some great, affordable area rugs, like this 5′3″ x 7′ area rug with a classic trellis design in a variety of colors.
Don’t Scuff Your Floors!
A simple trick to avoid scuffed floors is to keep furniture on rolling casters or furniture sliders. Depending on the darkness of your flooring, these blend right in with your living room, and ensure that if you ever need to move anything around for redecorating or cleaning that you don’t leave an unsightly scuff or scratch in your beautiful floors.
Accent Walls
Creating an accent wall is a great way to add class and personality to your living room. Depending on your sense of style, paint may be a great option; however, wallpaper and even shiplap, or wood paneling, is equally worth considering.
Chalkboard Paint
While many people choose a complementary color when painting an accent wall, an equally popular choice is painting a wall in chalkboard paint. This allows you to track important dates or reminders, and also lets your guests leave their mark on your space. The best part? If you aren’t feeling what’s up, you can easily erase it and replace it with something else.
DIY Shiplap
For a classic look that manages to tow the line between rustic country warmth and modern elegance, it’s hard to beat the look of shiplap. Whether you’re looking to add flair to a small section of your living room, or create an accent framing one of the mirrors you’ve hung, wood paneling is an easy way to get things look clean and refined. Epic Artifactory actually makes their own DIY self-adhesive shiplap that is a must have for those looking to replicate this effect in their own homes.
Just because you have a large living room doesn't mean that some of these tips aren't for you. With an open mind and a curious appetite for learning more about living room design ideas and tips, you're sure to get something out of this handy guide.

THOTS & PRAYERS FOR THE BROTHERHOOD OF WHITE MEN
is what I’m gonna call this mess
since we’re the demo that does them best
if thots and prayers mean acting less
or voting against marginalized groups with minority stress… as if women at conference tables… and brown folks in dorms… need white guys subtracting more… and I know we use categories for making sense… and giving names to groups we haven’t met
but no
WHY DO YOU HATE WHITE MEN THAT’S LIKE ME SAYING I HATE FAGGOTS AND LATINAS
my brother
on the phone while I’m at an intersection
but what about flesh in the grass and women in ironworking and los trumpistas in southern california and pixie boys in kootenai county and ill-eagles fireworks on the skokomish reservation and mothers nursing children in rocking chairs at spokane international airport… and steer ropers staring in horses’ eyes… and words so strong they become actions like “guilty” and “I hereby pronounce you”
I want to say
it comes down to
while animals aim for physical victory bc they’re rewarded by evolutionary gain… my brother aims for high-volume sucker-punching bc… well same
no no no I reassure myself… I’ve prepared for this moment… covering my bedroom walls with butcher paper and definitions for agápē and wisdom and grace
the light turns green
in seattle where my boyfriend and I saw a band named “boyfriends”… consisting of three guys some with girlfriends maybe play-acting “gay”
not the faggot town I grew up in
did I say faggot town
flipped my thoughts
I live with faggots now
bc of course I moved away
from where I was raised… where ladies in subdivisions filled rusted bathtubs with dahlias… and re-arranged living room sectionals and side tables… and guys in trailer parks worked on TVs in their yards
I never smeared deer blood on my face after a kill… and neither did my brother
we never paintballed stop signs… or climbed trees to catch squirrels (the unofficial after-school workout of the wrestling team)… or nailed the bloody skins to the weight room wall… or chilled in the parking lot with the tenth-grade science teacher slash security guard
where I grew up
white trash was designated white as opposed to other dodgy colors
wonder if the cafeteria table at school still says derek smith is a fag… I see blocky letters behind my eyes… nirvana on the lawn… holding a stick next to a praying mantis… hoping she’ll crawl on
live in the same place long enough and the frogs will be gone
each year I bike a block further
find certainty in school
lay around and think about what's true
leave cleats books water bottles in the living room
train for x-country in july and august… dream of anthropology and art history in college… parents fill out FAFSA forms
unconscious
at the intersection of my privs
square jaw wide grip
I give in
I say to my brother
driving by the gaybucks
are you serious? I ask... you want to do this rn? you think I hate white men? you didn’t show much interest in my self-hatred when we were teens
we were raised to read widely on top of doing our homework for English class… stories about white men unable to find work or shelter… I stayed awake by reading one chapter in the basement of our three-story home and another chapter in the bath… and another chapter in the basement… and another in the bath
it was 1997 and everyone was wearing ck jeans and eternity cologne and disappearing into the wood paneling of their basements
not everyone wrote a 5-paragraph paper on why abortion was wrong
but I did
most people ate the pro-life sundaes at youth group
as the tin man in our high school production of “The Wizard of Oz”… I dreamed of a fabulous life in the emerald city… while listening to conservatives in the community complain about the presence of witches and pagan values in the play… a few token liberals described how the Wicked Witch’s green skin and Glinda’s button nose… equated virtue with appearance
I worked on a farm for $
hi-ho the derrrrrrrrry-o
faggot on the farm
flesh in the grass
telling stories and pulling weeds as I acknowledged “weed” was a human category… for life distinct from other forms of life… standing out in color and shape… budding out of place
when I got home I studied Zanie’s backwoods dialect in Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God”
four years later
ash-covered New Yorkers crossed the Brooklyn Bridge with their hands on their faces
I picked blueberries on Mount Rainier… asked if subalpine flowers should smell like dryer sheets if lakes should be toilet tab blue
¾” threaded galvanized pipe two chain links eye bolts flag
supplies list from the guy at the rest-stop on the way home… old glory should stand up to a 96 mile trip up to 70 mph
I went to work folding taco wrappers into triangles like nothing had happened… and made food with beef that showed up in boxes marked “fit for human consumption”… staging mexi-fries under heat lamps in groups of two or three
while boy george (w.) signed the Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism act
after work I slept in self-inflicted poverty in a house full of guys who did backyard enemas and drank jars of pee and kept mushroom journals… and changed my opinion about property ownership… bc why bother storing up treasure when human possession is an illusion… and condoleeza rice has a chevron tanker named after her
we argued about earth history and theological precepts like pre-destination
but agreed
god’s complacent
should be more like the hippie guy in the volkswagen van… with Eden Before The Fall painted one side… and Eden After The Fall on the other… and a nice patch of grass growing on top
textbooks copied screens
fireplaces provided intimacy w/o heat
virtual experiences dominated references in speech
green-tongued goats on forest service roads licked antifreeze
we asked if the phone was real or surround sound prestige... did the spin instructor in the windowless gym want sixty percent on hills or ninety percent on streets… is the norway maple transplanted to the front lawn of the new house conveying a line of aristocratic family wealth
an old-growth tree
the entrepreneur in an education workshop talked about “products” metaphorically
a patriot/explorer on a mustang/bronco went on an expedition/excursion to the frontier/tundra… passing through the winnebago tribe saying
srry bout it
the kids on the makah reservation don’t want whale sandwiches
wal-mart got blue and target red
white wonder bread
happy meals
j. christ
c.e.o.
5 lb cereal
4 brown ghosts
the speaker at the commencement ceremony joked, “what’s the difference between Pullman and a cup of yogurt?”
the cup of yogurt has more culture
zuckerberg’s hoodie went from “disregard for convention” to “purity of intention”… for someone too focused to worry about clothes… monastic gray was helping folks
now we’re here
we’re here
at the mindfulness weight loss retreat… three raisins… six almonds… the right herbal tincture… twenty minutes in the redwoods
dragging
the past in front of us bc it happened
we’re at home eating pancakes with butter and syrup and powdered sugar… but the sugar is crushed-up hydroxycut

Then if I mention the disparity he blames ‘red tide.’ When I needed postnatal care to stop my fourth trimester pants-pissing, my doctor’s visit wasn’t covered. Society isn’t family friendly. EPILOGUE
Before sharing my brother’s response, I want to say I wrote “Thots & Prayers” because women get fewer obituaries than men in newspapers. Because the Baltimore Orioles lost way back when they had no tree canopy in which to land. Because trauma squats in the valley and anxiety raps her knuckles on the hill. Because Taco Bell spent 10 years and $15 mill developing stretchy cheese. Because men look at other men working in daycare centers and think they’re dumb for frittering away perks that should have been theirs from birth. Because my older brother yelled about faggots and Latinas after visiting the site of the Orlando Pulse shooting.
I am not looking to be comforted or assuaged.
White men need to educate each other. It’s not anyone else's job. We need to listen to the cultural conversation, see connections, and act on behalf of people who aren't seen. We need to be friendly in crowded places, and pull each other aside and be bridges.
I hope my family understands how many things will break if we don’t accommodate fragility. I’m not a metaphysician and don’t know about quantum mechanics or particle physics, but I know the phrase “I hope” is a glimmer of light living outside my rage. “I hope” signals my privilege. I hope to understand more about “I hope” in the context of everyday life in coming days.
As a beneficiary of entrenched systems, I work for everyone to have equal voice and access. I work for what’s best in my neighborhood and nation, on this striking and stunning and astoundingly polluted planet. I avoid asteroid-bashing. I avoid the ossification of stalemate. I avoid co-opting languages of the oppressed. I save room for warmth and time for children. I learn about neuro-diversity in the workplace and nutrient density in school lunches, and communicate generously about these issues and other issues, like the shared struggle for justice.
Mantras I’m saying and acting upon.
What’s mine is yours.
We do not need all the parts of the old society to create a new one.
If you feel inspired, please comment. I’d love to hear your weightiest belief, most potent fear, frustrations, considerations, qualifications, corrections, assessments, and agreements. No presh. I get nervous sharing my feelings, and words impact and behave differently for different people. The spaces between known grains of wood make wood strong.
I wasn’t sure if my brother would be a grain or a space. He’s the first person to admit he doesn’t read much and would rather talk on the phone or hash things out in person. Before sharing this, I called him up and said, “I’m about to send you a piece of writing. You don’t have to read the whole thing. You can always ‘Ctl. F’ and look for ‘brother.’”
Here’s what he wrote:
FYI, I don't really like you writing somewhat rude things about me and my house (which I take as jabs towards my wife and kids), etc. I don't do that towards you. I know there was some nice stuff too… I am communicating by e-mail as I know email is your preferred method, but at some point you need to realize I have feelings and opinions too, and don’t share them with everyone.
Right now I’m looking at 40+ people smoking joints outside the subsidized housing across the street. Wish I had that option. I wonder if their chronic drug use is helping out the health care system – I know they're not paying into it? I was up at 4:05 a.m. today to keep working toward losing that 20 lbs. so I'm not a burden on the system in the future. Learned that from Mom and Dad. I guess sometimes I feel ripped off. Need to get back to work now as I need to pay bills.
I’m sorry about the hate stuff that one day, you know I don't feel that way.
On another note, is hydroxycut good stuff?
R
He attached a document where he continued the conversation.
I promise to… take care of my kids and not cheat on my wife.
I’ve been thinking about… how to lose 20 more lbs. so I’m not dead when my kids are 40.
I feel like I am owed… nothing. I don’t feel I’m owed anything. Everyone chooses how to spend their money.
... and gave me prompts of my own.
In unison: I’ve been busy me: working about 12 hours per day if I count commuting and working on my house. you: [
In unison: I save my money for me: the future. I think I’m responsible for taking care of my own problems instead of hoping someone will help me out if something happens. you: [
In unison: I feel I’m privileged because me: I had a good Mom, Dad, and brothers growing up. I was never given any money, but having someone in your corner is more valuable. I am in your corner if you are in a pinch, and I know Mom and Dad are too. you: [
Working for a great strong land of love,

COLOPHON
Published on tumblr on Thursday, Aug. 10, “Thots & Prayers” is a phone transcript, visual essay, poem, and interactive self-help manual. I edited my brother’s written response for clarity. My mom took the pictures of my brother and me. My friend Jonathan Ursin took the pictures of me kneeling on the amphitheater stage and laying in the grass with rosary beads. I took the rest. Spanish phrases were proofed by Alè Barrientos. Radio broadcast lines are excerpted from Langston Hughes’ “Let America Be America Again.” Endorsement by Seattle performer Nico Pecans (they/them) / Miss Texas 1988 (she/her) is available. Lines from “James” and “Jason” are from interviews with James and Jason. PDF with original formatting shared upon request.

Star Crossed - Part 2 (H.S AU)
Maddie’s POV
The rest of my day was pretty uneventful. Grab the clothing item, fold, put in the box, repeat. Packing was tedious, to say the least. At dinner, I took note of Chuck’s absence. Did he just pack up and leave us? God, you really do exist. I’m sorry I haven’t been to church in like….9 years..oops? But hey, shout out to you homie for sending away all that is wrong in the world. Or, well..this house. My little prayer is cut short when my mom finally interrupts the only sounds that can be heard which are forks and knives knocking against our plates.
“Chuck won’t be joining us tonight, he’s on a business trip for the next few days.” WOO! This day just get’s better and better.
“How long is a ‘few days?’’ I gesture air quotes and raise an eyebrow at my mother.
“Until Saturday.”
I hum in response. On the outside I am calm, but I know that on the inside I am jumping up and down and spraying champagne everywhere. Maybe that’s a bit dramatic – but whatever it takes I am going to make the most of the time my family and I have without him in the house. As we finished dinner, plates ended up in the sink, and after my nightly routine, I had been reunited with my bed, before sleep spread throughout my body.
--------------------------
After waking up at 11 AM, and panicking because I was supposed to meet Niall at Starbucks at 12, as we agreed on once I was awake, I somehow ended up with some makeup on, as well as a cute outfit. I wore black jeans, black ankle boots, and a gray v neck shirt. I threw my hair up into a ponytail and pulled some little strands out in the front before grabbing my keys to my car, I drove off towards the Starbucks. The only Starbucks anywhere close to the pair of us was the one inside the neighboring city. We both lived in one of the suburban cities, called Adelton. Luckily, Dalton, the neighboring city was a short drive.
It didn’t take me long to get there because everyone was probably working so there wasn’t any traffic. I had made it to the door of the café by 11:56 and took a deep breath before slowly pushing it open, scanning the room for blonde hair and blue eyes. And then I saw him. He was sat at one of the little tables by the window, watching the cars go by in the heart of the city where we were. Eventually, his eyes met mine and a warm, welcoming smile made its way onto his face. I gathered up all the bravery I could muster before slowly walking towards him. He was quick to stand up, pushing his chair back, causing it to squeak as it skids across the floor.
“Hey! It’s nice to meet ye, Madeleine,” he offers, his arms stretching out for a hug. His accent is pretty interesting. I’ve never really heard accents apart from the ones here in the states. I awkwardly accept it, as strange as it may feel.
“You can just call me Maddie,” I pull back and force a smile back to him. He nods his head toward the chair as if he is asking me to sit, which I do.
“Crap, I’m sorry, you said that yesterday didn’t ye?”
“No, it’s no big deal, no worries Niall.” I offer him another smile, only this time it’s real.
We spent the next hour going over plans for our relocation day. As it turns out, Niall already lives in the house we’re expected to occupy together. Not only that, but he has three housemates. I was not just going to be living with Niall…I was going to be living with three other strangers. Not once have I heard of newly crossed pairs having housemates. I would say four strangers, but after talking to Niall even just for a few minutes, I felt it was wrong to address him as one. He was…kind.
“If ye want, and ye aren’t busy, you should stop by later and meet the lads. We’re having some friends over for a li’l get together tonight. It’d also be good for you to see the house so you have an idea of where you want to put yer stuff.”
I laugh a little. “Trust me, I have nothing to do other than pack my clothes, and I am really great at procrastinating, I’d be happy to stop by.” I smile.
“Great! I actually gotta go, ‘gotta start helping the boys get the house cleaned before people start comin’ over, they keep texting me – telling me to ‘clean my damn room,’” he chuckles, “but I’ll see you there at 5:30?”
“Ya, I’ll see you then.”
----------------------------
“There’s four of them?! How is that even possible?!” My mother scowls confusedly. Robin just giggles, from her spot next to my mom on the couch. I had to ask my mom if I could borrow her car because mine was running low on gas, and I forgot to fill the tank on the way home. Good job Maddie, 10/10.
“Don’t know, but I guess I’m gonna’ find out” I shrug, chuckling.
At that point, it was almost 4:30 so I had a little less than an hour to throw something together. Now, I am sat inside my mom’s white Volkswagen Touareg, parked in what’s supposed to be my new driveway. My fingers tap the steering wheel nervously. The house was huge and extremely beautiful. I had never seen a house this big, so I don’t know how in the hell my mom is helping pay for this. I don’t know what I did to deserve to move into this gorgeous house, to be honest. Sighing, I unbuckle my seatbelt and step out of the car, closing the door behind me and locking the vehicle, leaving it with the slew of cars in the driveway.
I walk up towards the mahogany double doors. The sun hasn’t quite gone down yet, but it leaves an orange glow across the white concrete of the walkway, and the white house itself. I knock lightly on the door, and tug on my olive green jacket lightly, then fidget with my keys while I wait for a response. I decided to just wear what I was wearing earlier, but threw on a little more makeup, and a jacket, because there was a bit of a breeze outside today. I’ve never really been one for first-encounters. In fact, I’m actually quite shy when meeting new people. What if they didn’t like me? What if they were annoyed that someone like me was getting to move into their nice house? I really hope no one is giving their room up for me, but I also don’t want to share a bed with someone I just met…
The door opens to reveal a giggling, crinkle-faced Niall Horan. Seeing him smile so big makes me break a small closed mouth smile on my own face.
“Hey! Glad you could make it!” He pulls me in for another hug, with one arm.
“Thank you for inviting me,” I chuckle, smiling and mumbling into his shoulder. I slide my keys into my jacket pocket.
“No, of course! I mean, after all, this is yer house too in a few days, so make yourself at home!” his tone is kind and welcoming. I guess living with him might not be as sufferable as I suspected. He nods his head towards the inside of the house and holds the door open for me.
I mumble a quick thank you as I step past him. Wow…the outside of the house was gorgeous, but the inside definitely has it beat. The walls are a shade of gray so light it almost looks white, and the floors a dark chocolate brown shade of wood paneling. Directly to the right is the kitchen – all white cabinets, and counters, white marble countertops, and an island much like the one in my childhood home, only the stools are metal, with light teal cushions. To the left, in the middle of the large open space, there are three gray couches with red square pillows surrounding a white marble coffee table – across from which is a fireplace, with a large tv mounted on the wall. Next to that, on the left are the stairs, which I am assuming lead up to the bedrooms. On the right of the fireplace is a large hallway, which Niall leads me through.
“The lads just went back outside to the backyard,” he scratches the back of his neck, as he walks backward whilst holding our conversation. I slide my hands into my back pants pockets and follow, “I figured it would be kind of intimidating if you walked in, and ‘dey were all just sitting around staring.” Wow, was it that obvious that I was socially awkward? I still appreciate the gesture though.
The heels of my boots click against the floor ten more times, and we’re in front of the glass doors that lead to the backyard. People are scattered at the bottom of the porch steps, in front of a large pool. The sun causes the water to glisten as it ripples. Fuck I have to talk to people. I compose my inner thoughts when Niall opens the door for me. Immediately all of the heads – male and female turn and look at us as we step out onto the porch. My eyes land on one guy in particular - whose long brown curls reach just above his broad shoulders. He’s wearing a white tee shirt, with tight black skinny jeans, and tan brown boots. I look back up at his face only to see him smiling lopsidedly, only making him even more handsome. Shit..He knows I was staring. I avert my gaze quickly and just look down at my feet until Niall speaks.
“Lads come here!” Niall chirps. My head pops back up into its natural position because within an instant, three guys are making their way over to Niall and me – handsome stranger included.
“Lads, this is Maddie, Maddie, these are your new housemates,” he nods towards the three people before me, standing at the bottom of the porch steps, smiling up at us. They seem friendly enough. I walk down, step by step.
“Nice to meet you, Maddie, I am Louis,” The one with light brown hair and blue eyes says. When he extends his right hand, I take it shaking it gently. My eyes flicker over to the next guy.
“Liam, good to meet you,” he offers a smile just as bright as Niall’s, shaking my hand just as Louis did. And then I look at him. He’s smiling, only this time it’s warm and inviting.
“Harry,” he says, shaking my hand. For a few seconds, I just stare, taking in his green eyes. They’re beautiful, almost a forest green, but slightly gold in the middle. I return a smile. Someone fake coughs, making me realize I am still holding his hand, I drop it quickly and wipe the awkward smile off my face. My hands make their way into my back pockets again as the nerves settle in once more.
Harry…I thought…not a bad name
Little did I know that very name and the face behind it would change my life forever.

Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Connecticut Beach House
Hello my wonderful friends! How are you today? It’s great to be back with this new “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” post especially because I am featuring such a talented and kind woman! Marcie, from @designsixtyfive, is a busy mom of two little boys, and, together with her husband, she managed to renovate and decorate this gorgeous Connecticut beach house.
I can’s stress enough for you to follow her on Instagram because she’s one of those rare people you meet and instantly feel connected to. Here, Marcie shares more details about her home:
“When we began planning for our home renovation, Home Bunch was one of my go-to sources for inspiration, so to be sharing our own home on this platform now is such an honor! I first started Design Sixty Five as a way to document our renovation for posterity, not thinking anyone would actually be interested in following along with the progress. A year later, I am truly amazed at how it taken on a life of its own and has become such a fulfilling creative outlet. It brings me so much joy to exchange ideas and inspiration with others and I couldn’t be happier to share our renovation experience here with you!”
Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Connecticut Beach House
“We bought this 1920’s colonial in 2012 (before having children) when it was only 1,300 square feet with 3 small bedrooms and 1 bathroom. After growing our family to include 2 kids and 2 dogs, we felt it was time for us to either expand or move. We fell in love with the location of this home, which is within walking distance of downtown as well as the beach, so we decided to renovate in order to make this home work for our family in the long term.”

Expanding your Dreams
“As part of the renovation, we essentially gutted the existing house, demolished an old detached garage and 3-season sunroom, and added on an attached garage, mudroom, kitchen, master suite and junior suite. While it might have been easier to demolish the entire house and start from scratch, we loved the original house and wanted to stay true to its history, charm and character. We replaced the windows, siding and roof and added architectural details to create interest and dimension while honoring the style of the original house. The newly renovated house is approximately 2,400 square feet and has 5 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms.”

Interior Design Using Orange & Blue: Tips To Help You Decorate Using Complementary Colors
Feast your eyes on these three juicy orange and blue home interiors, and see the visual impact that a complementary colour scheme can bring. These designs show how to achieve a good balance with hues that sit opposite on the colour wheel – without becoming too strong a palette that could completely overwhelm a space. This collection of room ideas includes orange sofas for your living room, blue kitchen ideas, a blue bathroom, bright accent chairs, colour pop scatter cushions, modern dining sets, and colourful feature walls that would brighten up just about any part of the home. Smooth neutral decor bridges the gap between the stronger shades, whilst beautiful accent pieces add polish.
Designer: Zrobym Visualizer: Zrobym A modern sofa stands wrapped in a bold orange tone in the centre of our first complementary colour living space. The home has a total area of 72.7 square metres, and this allows for a generous open plan combo of lounge, kitchen and dining room. A solo blue scatter cushion gives the orange seating area something in common with the blue kitchen cabinets behind it.
A wall of storage cabinets are faced with orange-brown doors, which are offset by an adjacent deep navy blue tv wall.
The sprawling sputnik chandelier has white lamp shades that pop against the dark tv wall decor. A white table lamp replicates the effect on a slimline mantelshelf. A duo of bird figurines perch at the opposite end.
Orange flames flicker along a modern fireplace on a navy hearth, below the wall mounted tv.
Crazed mosaic effect vinyl flooring wraps up over the baseboard in the kitchen, meeting with solid blue base cabinets. Gold handles and a gold faucet give the kitchen a high-end look, and exude a similar visual warmth as the orange elements in the living room.
Gold dining pendant lights hang in a trio across the small kitchen island and attached dining table.
The dining chairs don’t join in with the orange and blue theme, they take a quieter stance in monochrome that gives the bolder accents room to breath.
Ribbed wallpaper textures the blue bedroom accent wall. Limited orange-brown accents are introduced as a single throw pillow on the bed and within abstract art on the wall. A bedside cube and a built in desk complement the tone.
Gold bedroom pendant lights hang in a matching pair, illuminating each side of the bed.
In a second bedroom the colour scheme is switched to hot orange. Ribbed wallpeper and orange storage cabinets create feature walls in this space. Orange pillow cases tie the grey bed in with the surrounding hue. A purple cushion and throw provides colour contrast, and a pair of unique plant stands hold on to a living spray of green.
A wood vanity mirror shines on a beige wall opposite the end of the bed, above a smart black dressing table.
Modern candles with a hint of orange dress the tabletop, balanced by a purple tinted glass vase at the other side.
A modern flush plate provides a rich block of gold on a deep blue bathroom wall.
Designer: Alena Pautova Photographer: Sergey Krasyuk Standing out loud and proud, an orange accent chair colours the modern living room of home number two. See more stylish modern accent chairs here.
Wood panels stripe the ceiling, and warmly coincide with the orange elements that stand down at ground level.
A built-in bookcase brings in a multitude of bright books and accessories, between a set of floor skimming beige curtains. A chic modern coffee table holds games controllers within easy reach of a grey L-shaped sofa. A large black floor lamp provides task lighting. More great floor lamps here.
The coffee table and matching media unit carry orange tones in their woodgrain. The tv wall decor forms a cool monochrome backdrop.
A window seat has been fashioned to make good use of the sunniest spot in the room.
Superhero decor adds a little humour on top of the seriously contemporary furniture.
Wood chevron flooring runs throughout.
The orange Drop chair design at the dining table works well with the geometric wood floor pattern. A chrome dining pendant reflects the orange hue.
A blue-grey kitchen installation is sheltered with deep stained wood grain.
Chrome kitchen elements bring reflections of light into the dark ensemble.
A pair of chrome bedroom pendant lights illuminate the bedside table, where more superhero decor can be found. Blue-grey tones create a dramatic scene.
Orange toned wood warms the look of a white bathroom.
The bright orangey wood is balanced out with a panel of chic black marble and a sleek grey vanity unit.
Wood slats cross the bathroom ceiling.
Visualizer: Andrey Radin Our third and last tour uses lots of clean white space between accent colours.
White sofas, white storage cabinets and a white kitchen keep things simple.
Blue wall art adds bold interest on plain walls.
An orange modern chair stands out in the snow white room with black accents.
A silver feature wall shimmers behind the tv.
More silver panels shine across the dining room, cut through by strip lights.
The white dining set blends quietly with the calm white decor.
A bronze buddha is framed in black metalwork. A monochrome houndstooth pouf brings in more base notes.
A black linear suspension lamp lights the white modern dining room set.
Mature cacti bed down in black planters.
The white kitchen island is cut through with black elements.
Another black bar light illuminates the geometrically cut kitchen island.
The sharp irregular silhouette gives the kitchen a futuristic appearance.

Front Door Paint Color: Benjamin Moore Stonington Gray.
Front door knocker is Michael Healy Designs.
Roof: Cedar Shingle & Standing Seam Copper.
Lighting: Restoration Hardware Union Filament Sconce in Polished Nickel – Others: here, here, here & here.
Garage Lights: Restoration Hardware 18” Vintage Barn Outdoor Sconce in Weathered Zinc – similar here & here.
Foyer
“When winter rolls around, this becomes the hardest working little corner of our house! A few years ago, we added a small powder room to this corner, which allowed us to create a “mini-mudroom” on this wall using board & batten and some simple wall hooks.”

Timeless Coastal Vibes
“On the interior, we opened up walls and added windows wherever possible to create an open floorpan that is flooded with natural light. The decor is simple with timeless elements of natural wood and textures, plenty of white, live greenery, and hints of blue.”

Shaping Slick Dark Interiors With Black & Grey Decor
Dark and decidedly slick, these black and grey interiors push the boundaries on great taste and modern home design. Charcoal living rooms play on a theme of shadows and highlights to shape layouts that are intriguing and ambiguous. Slatted dividers, stone walls and textured elements take on added prominence in the low light. Graphite kitchens skim the edges of living rooms, falling away to let areas of comfort take the lead. Lounge furniture takes on a sculptural quality in stark surroundings, whilst cool art and contemporary home accessories shake up the darkness with quirky silhouettes and abstract motifs. Black dining sets are lit from overhead by eye-catching lighting designs that burn through the blackness.
Visualizer: Hot Walls A white Doric column cuts thickly through the black and grey interior of this Moscow studio design, demanding the layout to work around it.
A modern sofa configuration is pulled around the base of the column, facing both toward the TV and into the room behind.
Solid oak flooring lightens up the decor scheme and introduces texture.
Vertical radiators blend into the dark backdrop, placed either side of an undressed window.
The black living room is a minimalist open plan that includes the lounge, a dining area, and a concealed kitchen.
An artistic modern dining room chandelier snakes across the dark space, burning brightly against industrial metal rafters.
A smooth wall of wood fronted cabinets washes warmth and lighter tone across the entire length of the room, with the TV mounted against one end.
Directional track lights highlight the wood grain wall, whilst leaving the black dining set in the shadows.
Single hung windows set narrow lightboxes into the stark backdrop.
A slatted screen separates the grey dining room from the home entryway.
The kitchen remains a secretive volume until it’s required for purpose.
At meal times, the wall of wooden storage opens up to reveal a section of kitchen shelving and base units.
Moody backlit shelves give the one wall kitchen the appearance of a wet bar, but a small hob in the worktop reveals its full function.
Visualizer: Amir Adilbekov Our second home design features much larger windows, but the interior design is made equally dark with charcoal grey and black elements.
A linear LED floor lamp interrupts the darkened room. A thinner LED ribbon strokes the top of the window wall.
KAWS statues loom out of the shadows, their outlines kissed by low light from the window wall.
A pair of oval coffee tables scoop out the centre of the lounge, their rounded bases darkening into obscurity.
A modern sectional sofa is separated into pieces to form the outline of the lounge layout.
The kitchen’s linear suspension light spans the entire length of a long stone island, which is set with an induction hob and the kitchen sink.
A wall of full height black cabinets is interrupted by a glass cabinet. Soft lighting illuminates the wine glasses stored inside.
The wine glass cabinet is set dead centre behind the kitchen island, creating satisfying symmetry.
Minimalist kitchen bar stools cut sharp silhouettes.
Architect: Anmol Gohil Visualizer: Anmol Gohil Brown accents interrupt the black and grey decor scheme of home design number three. A mocha coffee table lays down a circle shape theme that is repeated in abstract wall art behind the sofa. A novelty floor lamp introduces a sculptural element.
An area rug adds texture beneath the round coffee table, and a houndstooth pouf brings in bold pattern.
Quilted cushions pile up on the sofa, layering in extra comfort.
The pouf is seated close to the TV wall, which is fitted with custom built cabinetry. A nook is positioned low in the wall, replacing the traditional fireplace.
The dark kitchen falls back into the shadows, resting quietly alongside the lounge.
A home workspace attaches to the end of the one wall kitchen, separated out by an oven housing unit.
Visualizer: Leng Keng A halo wall light commands the black living room of home design number four. The light feature accentuates a KAWS statue by the home entryway and an industrial style rack for shoes.
Brown accents come into play here too, in the form of a modern sofa design.
The brown leather sofa looks light against a charcoal grey backdrop. White pampas and a white fluffy area rug further lift the scheme. A black Eames bird makes a stark addition to the pale stone coffee table.
White modern dining chairs lift the look of the black kitchen diner. Glass dining room pendant lights cause liquid-like reflections above the round dining table.
A brown floor bed is complemented by golden accents in the grey bedroom. A rugged black stone headboard wall features another sleek gold halo.
Visualizer: Renderoom Our final home design is a graphite and pale oak model. The living room area rug brings in a modern geometrical element.
Black and white artwork is propped informally against the foyer wall, creating a transition space between the entryway and the kitchen.
The black media cabinet and bookcase are one integrated unit, giving the wall a clean and simplified aesthetic. Coloured inserts break up the flat black stacks.
Indoor plants brighten the dark interior, and add height at the centre of the layout and dining room table.
A blue glass vase adds a subtle drop of colour into the monochrome room. Glass fronted cabinets give the dark kitchen a more open feel and a light reflective quality.

Stepping Softly Into Green Home Interiors Under 90sqm (With Floor Plans)
Softly, softly does it with these peaceful green accent interiors. The colour inclusions are pale and sparing layers upon peaceful and understated grey, white, and woodtone spaces. The green theme brings a hint of energy to the first floor living rooms of these two double story homes, and freshens second floor bedrooms and bathrooms. Each of the light modern interiors measure just short of 90 square metres, and we deliver the cleverly compact floor plans at the end of each tour.
Designer: N Team Studio A light sage modern sofa spans the full width of the living room in this 74.4 square metre apartment located in Kyiv. Its green line is emboldened by a long planter of large leafed plants behind it.
The modern staircase design starts just inches from the edge of the couch. In order to overcome the feeling of being crowded in, the staircase sports a transparent mesh siding. Stair lights brighten the stairwell further, and act almost as wall lights to the lounge. Precious space under the stairs is well utilised for storage.
A good sized media cabinet provides more space to stow away bits and pieces. The large white unit runs the full length of the TV wall, but a plinth light helps the piece feel a little more lightweight. Wood panels texturise the TV mount wall, with the same timber making up the top of the media unit.
Raw timber and pale walls give the small living room an airy and calming atmosphere.
The boxed indoor plants form a natural screen between the lounge and a breakfast bar, so that the sofa doesn’t feel uncomfortably overlooked by anyone who is eating there.
Stone grey bar stools scoop under the bar, peering through the green outlook.
A more formal dining area fits comfortably into a window nook.
A round dining table pushes up against custom banquette seating to form a compact breakfast nook.
One tiny dining pendant light adds just the right flash of finesse over the round dining table, which is topped with fruit bowls, candlesticks and a glass vase full of delicate wheat stalks.
Cabinets fit into the recess of the breakfast nook, extending kitchen storage.
The rest of the L-shaped kitchen is sliced through with a charcoal grey backsplash.
Warm white LEDs skim under the upper cabinets.
Upon climbing the wooden staircase, we come to flush white interior doors with slimline black surrounds.
One of the doors gives entry to a home office with a snug lounge.
A square coffee table with an indoor plant creates a homey entryway into the office, whilst an inviting window seat softens the far wall.
The home workspace hides away behind a deep support wall.
Green accents make a fresh minty addition to the attic bedroom. A green throw colours a made-to-measure floor bed design, which is situated right beneath the skylight for stargazing.
A bespoke dresser design rests lightly on the foot of the floor bed.
The walk in wardrobe is furnished with an emerald green pouf.
Green accents disappear inside a sharp grey and black bathroom design. Soft light emerges from around a modern bathroom vanity cabinet, and from a perimeter recess along the shower enclosure.
The subtle perimeter lighting effect is repeated in the small powder room.
First floor plan.
Second floor plan.
Designer: Zrobym Architects Located in the Logoisk district of Minsk, Belarus, this 90 square metre home employs a brighter tone of green to shake up grey and timber base decor. A bright mint and umber rug perfectly compliments the colourful round coffee table, which is the stylish 33 by Gruppo Tomasella.
An amber glass vase warms up a pure white sideboard, where white bookshelves climb a pale oak panelled wall. A black floor reading lamp and comfortable reading chair give the reading nook a stark contrasting aesthetic.
Sheer grey drapes hang lightly at floor to ceiling windows.
An open plan kitchen diner lines up in the space behind the sofa. Ribbed black siding makes a feature of the central kitchen island, and matches it to the fireplace wall in the lounge.
Modern dining room pendant lights make an impressive feature over the little dining spot, which projects straight off the kitchen island.
A simple glass carafe stands on the rectangular tabletop. Black dining chairs match its black powder coated frame.
Black framework characterises glass interior walls too, giving them strength and presence.
Inside the bedroom, a misty grey, white, and pale green palette paints a relaxing space. Small modern wall sconces meld with an exaggerated white headboard.
Wood effect panelling makes an attractive mount for a bedroom TV.
The end of bed bench is built right into the bedframe for a minimalist streamlined finish.
Clean and linear, a modern vanity unit is lifted clear of the floor in the downstairs bathroom. A ribbon of LEDs highlight a convenient recess in the wall above the vanity countertop, where a whole host of toiletries or decorative items can be housed.
A small indoor plant adds a sprig of greenery.
In the kids’ room, the green accent takes leave of absence and is replaced by dusky pink and blue accessories.
The upstairs family bathroom takes us back to the colour theme with a unique green vanity.
Grey stone slabs and white marble tiles break up the small space.
First floor plan.
Second floor plan.
