okay I watched good omens s2 yesterday with my partner, and I was genuinely very surprised -- I think if you've grown up through superwholock/merlin/the 100/teen wolf type shows where (with the exception periodically of doctor who) you kind of had to make up the good show that something could have been in your head, that colours a lot of your viewing, and to be honest I thought season 1 of good omens was a fine little piece, honoured the book while modernising it somewhat, it was a nice, fun, low stakes time, with a couple of things I might have wanted a tad different but nothing overall awful.

so I was seeing all this meta and gifsets and discussion, while I was waiting to give s2 a watch with my partner and thought "ah, people have made up the good show in their heads again" not that I assumed s2 was going to be a bad show, but that people were taking extra deep plunges into possibilities, the way fandom does, and that was fine. I knew there was a big ol kiss, I had a sense of some kind of argument at the end, and that it was setting up a s3

I also knew that mainstream reviews were calling it (politely) self-indulgent and dependent on whether or not you enjoy david tennant and michael sheen having a good time for just under 6 hours

all in all, expectations of a somewhat mainstream show without too much to think about, a nice, fun low stakes time, moving on...

(EDIT: AND THEN I WROTE A LOT OF WORDS SO YOU CAN IMAGINE THAT MY REACTION WAS QUITE DIFFERENT)

as it turns out it seems these things that were being written on tumblr were discussing the actual text of the show and not things you could extrapolate if you squinted and tilted your head a little to the left as I'm so used to doing, so in fact there is much to think about!

and my first thought was "this is like when you read early discworld books that ask a question like a joke, only to find that over time the answer to that question becomes very serious (and also can be funny at times of course)." how terry pratchett would pick and pick at tropes and notions and social ideas and go "oh now hold on, this seems strange..." starting way back when he thought it was odd that women warriors always seemed to be dressed in metal bikinis and then realising he hadn't done a good enough job of subverting the trope, simply by depicting it and calling it a bit silly

why do goblins always get treated as the villains? what's with this divine succession of kings business? where are the female dwarfs? who do we treat as disposable?

good omens season one went: "haha what if heaven and hell were intensely incapable, bureaucratic, corrupt, and uncaring of the work they did, and we took an angel and a demon and had them actually care? wouldn't that be... a bit silly?" (and it was)

good omens season two went: "what are the consequences for caring when the people who have power over you are incapable, bureaucratic, corrupt, and uncaring? what are the forces that supersede systems built on fear, ignorance, and violent conformity? can people change and break out of/challenge/break down these structures by caring?"

and this was set up with a neat little sleight of hand (to reference aziraphale's switch-and-bait in the episode with the nazi zombies), because the majority of season 2 does feel a bit indulgent: hey, remember those two wacky angel-and-demon characters? watch some more wacky things they did through the ages, watch them take a sojourn through 1827 Edinburgh and do a magic show during the Blitz, and... stop the death of Job's and Sitis' children (actually maybe that whole segment ought to have been what they call "A Clue")

see them try to figure out a kooky mystery, all the while setting up a cute little same-gender romance on their street. watch as everything points towards a happy ending that's all about the two of them realising what they've been to one another all these thousands and thousands (and thousands and thousands) of years- but hold on. lest we forget - and the show has made this point over and over - there are powerful people who control them, who hurt them, and who plan on hurting others, throughout the whole season, and as it turns out they know what they've been to one another for far far longer, and know how to pull their strings...

season 2 then, has to show us these things, not because they're indulgent (well, maybe occasionally, but the apology dance is still important), but because in order to make the ending a tragedy, we first need to understand, properly, the impact that they have had on each other. we need to understand that Aziraphale relied heavily on Crowley to be his moral compass and leaned on black-and-white thinking in order to deal with things, because if it's all grey then where does he fit and what has it all meant and heaven has to be the good guys, even as Job's and Sitis' children are ordered to be killed, it's all he ever had...

and Crowley was always an anchor, needed to trust that Aziraphale was different, needed to bend to every whim that Aziraphale has, because otherwise what's his worth in all this? After having been already deemed worthless by the heaven that Aziraphale needs to believe in?

and that, simplistically described, is the narrative that we're seeing in s2, and alongside that the ways that the changes they have upon each other are noticed, and monitored, and placed under suspicion, and finally... broken up, not by the clumsy, brute force that's been attempted over and over again, but by a promise to return into a violent, controlling system and to "make it better from within"

and all of this is wrapped up in two queer relationships + a third queered-within-the-text relationship that creates the inverse of how it ends for Aziraphale and Crowley (so far). queer love -- whatever shape that has -- is explicitly the shape of non-conformity within this narrative, including within the symbolism of angel-and-demon love of Gabriel and Beelzebub, which in the context of the systems created is considered queer (and one can argue till the cats come home about casting cis actors, about angel-and-demon notions of gender/romance/sexuality, but the "queerness" comes from building something non-conforming to the systems they exist in), and enforced by the explicitly our-world-definition-of queer romance that Nina and Maggie have going on (which, while less high stakes, still contains the background controlling relationship that Nina initially is in)

all of this to say, that I disagree that s2 meanders, or that plotlines happen for the sake of showcasing Aziraphale and Crowley without purpose, or that characters get sidelined (I'd say it sets up a whole host of interesting characters to further get into actually), or that it's strictly mainstream easy-access narrative that's just an excuse for the main creators and actors to get back together.

the love is the point, and this show takes its time to show the love (and the unequal boundary-setting, and the fact that one of them has an undiscussed tragic backstory, and the desperation to belong again, and the fear instilled by oppressive systems, and and and), so that we understand why those last 15 minutes happen the way that they do

it's sleight of hand, and like all good magic, you don't notice until it's happened

Felix x fem!Byleth from FE3H... I thought it���d be the same as f!Dimileth (the fandom version of it at least) where the man is like ~~ohhhh I’m a monster I’m so broken ahhh I push people away and go on berserker rages because of my tragic backstory~~ and the woman has to be gentle and kind, the epitome of femininity (despite being a mercenary who had been trained to kill since she was 11...), basically put himself above her on so many levels and the onus is on her to ~~fix him~~~...but apparently not??? The fancontent is so gorgeous and has them as equals, both lonely people who’ve had their childhood taken away from them, both who’ve closed themselves off from the world (or in Byleth’s case, has never known how to open herself up to it), both of them seeing themselves in each other, both taking it upon themselves to meet each other half-way and from thereon help each other process their past and walk forward into the future...damn man, the kinship and the partnership in this ship... (also it really helps that 1. Felix is awed at Byleth’s swordsmanship and tactical mind and pushes himself to surpass it, forming a foundation for a healthy rivalry 2. the fandom does not forget that Byleth is her own person and not just Felix’s partner *cough* Dimileth *cough* Edeleth *cough*)

Hmmmm well sometimes I wished (in general) that I could actively ship mlm couples, just because there’s so much content for them :)) (don’t get me started on how fandom gravitates towards male characters and mlm ships...lmao someone way back then gave me the excuse that it’s because the actual creators put more effort into their male characters and that they end up becoming more complex and interesting and like *looks at my fandoms where there are just as many girls as guys, just as interesting (if not more so) backstories and dynamics and interactions for the female characters, looks at the sheer number of mlm shippers in those fandoms who squeeze the most out of every insignificant moment for their male characters while ignoring the depth and complexity of the female characters* sure)

1. Fanfic with more “out-there” ideas :)) (Don’t get me wrong, there are fanfics that fall far from Glee’s high school/young adult/modern-coming-of-age setting, and even for fics that do fall under those spheres there are some that deal with complex, intricate themes in such an incredible manner or even if not that are just plain enjoyable but like,,, there aren’t enough for my ever-expanding hunger HAHA)(my last couple of fandoms were dark fantasy/sci-fi/whatever The Good Place is so I guess I just got spoiled lmao)

2. More analytical thinking LMAO I guess it just frustrates me that there are so many people in the fandom who take things at face value??? Given how biased the writers are and how shit they are at continuity it really doesn’t make sense to me that so many people take things so literally haha

Something that I had wanted to write for Brittana (since 2012!) but never had the brain cells to: a sailor!AU where the characters live on a flat world and they’re trying to sail towards its edge (encountering so many mythical beasts and legends on the way) (may or may not be inspired by C.S. Lewis’ The Voyage of the Dawn Treader haha)

Special mention to this AU since I've used for at least three fandoms by now haha: Pygmalion&Galatea!AU wherein one character creates a statue and her love for it brings it to life :)))

R - A pairing you ship that you don’t think anyone else ships

LMAO I went through Bae Doona’s body of work (what was available of it at least) in 2015 and ended up shipping her character Park Hyun-nam with her best friend (Yoon Jang-mi) in 플란다스의 개 (Barking Dogs Never Bite)...I wrote a very small ficlet of them (I literally had to create the section for them in ao3...and lmao I just checked and I am still the only fic in there HAHA)(please don’t look for my account btw all my fics are so self-indulgent and atrocious huhu) and I also made this gifset of them :))) As far as I know I am literally the only one in the entire world who ships them HAHA

Similar story for her character Ri Bun-hui in 코리아 (As One)...although honestly if it turns out that a decent number of people have seen this movie I’d be surprised that no one else shipped Bun-hui with Hyun Jung-hwa??? Because they??? Tennis table rivals from North Korea and South Korea who have to team up to win at the Olympics??? Jung-hwa trying to get Bun-hui and her team to loosen up??? Them becoming closer??? When the Olympics are over and the North Korea team have to go home, and Jung-hwa chases after the bus and tries to reach for Bun-hui’s hand, realizing that they might never see each other again??? I??? (Just...I had to make this gifset of their hands: when they first meet each other, when one takes the other’s for comfort, the last time their fingers will ever touch...)(Also let’s ignore that it’s a re-telling of real life event akjsndaskj haha)

oooh i support this, and encourage this majorly! what i think is the most fun tho, in fic, is to be incredibly self-indulgent. write solely for yourself, don’t worry about who will like it, because you can’t ever guarantee how other people react, but if you write what you want to read, you’ll at least have the certainty that YOU like it and are proud of it. that said, i would suggest:

who’s your fave gg character, other than dan or blair? if you’ve read enough of my fic you’ll notice that there’s often an abundance of nate in my dair fics, often moving the plot along or providing emotional support to one of them or whatever. i also adore having vanessa being there and being so done with them, haha. so! something that’ll add depth and be fun for you is if you find ways to write that really focus on characters and dynamics that you like. are you a jenny fan? have her talking to blair about how she better not break dan’s heart. are you a serena fan? have her and blair have a heart-to-heart. wonder what happened to olivia burke? have her come back and be like ‘what happened when i was gone.’ no character is too minor or too irrelevant. 

do an AU of an already existing media that you really like, even if it’s niche. i’m having the time of my life writing the osmosis / gg au, and im sure you have media like that too that means a lot to you, that you can step back and look at and be like ‘oh, that’s dan & blair.’ it doesn’t matter what it is, or how silly it is. do a disney movie au. do ‘the little mermaid’ in which dan is ariel and blair is eric. take some ABRITRARY and random piece of media that you like and just go “okay, i’m gonna throw dan & blair in there.”

fix-its!! fix-it fic is so so so common (for a reason, we all saw what canon did to our faves.) what is the one thing about canon dair that hurt you the most, that upset you the most deeply, that you wish had been different? write about it. write it being different. write about dan & blair getting married. write about dan & blair not getting fired from W and learning instead how to work together. write about dan & blair raising milo together. write about blair never even marrying louis in the first place, realising it was dan who wrote those vows. whatever you wish had been different in canon? make your home there.

expand on a canon detail. one of my dan/nate fics (sky blue, the one in which they seduce each other with lingerie, hahaha) came about SOLELY because of one line dan said where he was joking about what nate said abt anticipating sex with juliet and hoping there’s lingerie, and dan says something about “lingerie? i hope you mean for her” and it was hilarious. and i went. hey. what if i wrote fic around it? so i did. and it was fun, and i am very proud of that fic. but like, you can do the same thing with dan and blair. there’s so much stuff they reference that we don’t see. that essay competition blair won that dan showed up to when eleanor didn’t make it? all those failed attempts at having sex which they’re talking about in 5x18 where they keep getting interrupted and things go wrong? all the exhibits they visit and the movies they watch? there’s a lot you can do with all of that.

if you’re looking for really specific fluff suggestions, i’d suggest you look up those suggestion blogs / prompts blogs on tumblr. i used to follow a ton, but right now the only one i remember is meaningfulsuggestion. i would also suggest going through dair aesthetics and gifsets in general, seeing what provokes a strong emotional response. ngl, i’ve written a lot of fic because i stumbled upon a gifset that i couldn’t stop thinking about.

hi! sorry if youve been asked this a tonne before, but your gifs are so lovely and have such great quality i was wondering what stuff you do to get that crispness without having them blow up with grain/noise. thank u!!

aw, thank you! i spontaneously taught myself how to make gifs in march out of boredom so everything i do is the result of trial and error haha. my response is a bit rambly so it’s under a cut :)

some of the more handy tutorials that helped me figure out the different tricks to working photoshop and things like colours and lighting are in my /tagged/gif which may be helpful to you!

unfortunately grain is something that is basically impossible to avoid and i always notice it and get annoyed by it in my gifs, but the best way to avoid is it to avoid adjusting the colours too light from their original tone (brightness) or hue. some of the tutorials in that tag address this! @millerbenny-moved‘s tutorials probably helped me the most when it comes to avoiding grain and selecting better colour and lighting options for gifs while avoiding grain :)

my advice generally speaking would be to:

-use the highest quality source material that you have available

-utilise the smart sharpening function to make gifs a little more crisp

-try not to go too wild with colours and try and stick to some sort of base palette to avoid too much grain [a pretty good explanation and tutorial re: this]. try and boost the colours that are already there, rather than trying to adjust them too much into something completely different if you want to avoid grain.

-alternatively, add in a flat colour layer over your gif and meddle with the opacity until you get a colour you like to help achieve the colour you’re after like i did in this gifset [a handy tutorial]

-i find that scenes with solid blocks of colour and/or without too many white/super bright areas are much easier to work with re: getting them crisp, choosing nice colours, and avoiding grain. i hate large areas of white on gifs because i’ve found it basically impossible to work with re: colouring :(

-try and select scenes without too much movement (e.g. dramatic camera panning where your first frame is an entirely different landscape to the last frame). the more “still” a gif is and the most consistent the colours/palette is, the less i find that photoshop and the end product gets muddied

again, i am super new at this and continue to learn new things about giffing every single time i make a new gifset (especially because i don’t have a lot of free time, so sometimes its weeks before i have the chance to mess around with my ideas haha) so my recommendations are going to be look into those tutorials in my gif tag, check out gif makers who make tutorials and check them all out! there are so many ways to make gifs and the more you learn about the program you’re using the more you can figure out what works for you.

and, of course, simply make gifs while being incredibly self-indulgent! as i said, i’ve learned the most from trial and error - giffing different media and different mediums can teach you so much (even giffing different scenes from the same show can teach you a bunch as lighting and colours change!). you’ll start to pick up on which colours are easier to change and how to balance lighting and contrast and all that kind of stuff while maximising crispness and avoiding grain.
