Now maybe I’m on a kick of β€œshows based on Christian mythology + the act of forgiveness” because of what Good Omens has done to me, but I feel like there’s a lot to say about forgiveness in Hazbin Hotel, despite it rarely being directly talked about.
(Also it’s been years since I’ve been in a church and the Bible has been interpreted a thousand different ways by a thousand different people over the course of a thousand different years in a thousand different languages… sorry if my interpretation/terminology doesn’t match yours 🀷)
Forgiveness is a big thing in Christianity. Now while πŸ”₯FIRE AND BRIMSTONE AND WOE BE UPON YEE REPENT REPENT REPENTπŸ”₯ is a method some preachers will go, there is still that act of β€œrepent.” My boy Jesus on the cross forgave that thief, the thief asked him to remember him when Jesus got to heaven and Jesus said, β€œmy guy you’re coming too.” (Luke 23: 40-42) Most preachers/preists/weird youth group leaders will admit that if you ask God/Jesus for genuine forgiveness, you will be let unto the kingdom of Heavenℒ️
But the big thing with Hazbin is that β€œHell is Forever.” In ep6 during the song β€œYou Didn’t Know” Lute/Adam say β€œWhat are we even talking about, some crack-whore who fucked up already? He blew his shot, like the cocks in his mouth, this discussion is senseless and petty. There’s no question to be posed, he’s unholy, case closed, did you forget that hell is forever?”
I keep getting stuck at the line β€œhe blew his shot already.” Charlie is asking that sinners who genuinely want to try and be a little better are given a chance to. Now obviously the big thing is that Adam, Sera, no one knows what gets a soul into heaven, let alone do any of them have the ability to do so.
And I hear you now, β€œokay but lowkey like Adam said, they had the chance all of their LIFE to ask forgiveness. This is the after.” OK BUT I RAISE YOU TO READ β€œThe Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard” (had to bust out my own bible to remember this fucking story) Matthew 20: 1-16 is The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard which basically says, β€œit doesn’t matter at what point you ask for forgiveness, you will get it. Whether you were a good Christian born and raised or literally only started on your death bed, we’re gucci πŸ‘Œβ€
TLDR; Adam is being an asshole for killing the sinners who might actually give redemption a shot if they knew it worked, and my proof is the Bible says so (as if god, Jesus, or the Bible have even been mentioned πŸ’€βœŒοΈ)

Hotshot (Clarice x Jason)
Tumblr media
Pairing: Clarice Stokes x Jason Kolchek (The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes)
Words: 5251
Warnings: Swearing, slight NSFW, mentions of body horror, slight OOC
A/N 1: Content for my crack ship? Fine I'll do it myself. Lol it's been months since I've written anything and YEARS since I've written anything and posted it on Tumblr so hopefully I'm not too rusty.
A/N 2: Set in an AU where the team spends a week at the base before the raid because it's bullshit that they didn't get time to bond. Also an AU where Clarice doesn't die because her death being inevitable was also complete bullshit!! But I do love that then flirting in the game is pretty much canon I feel validated yee yee.
~~~~~~~
Thousands of feet above ground, Doctor Clarice Stokes quietly pondered on how she ended up here, how years upon years of her tireless work led to assisting on a mission in a country which saw devastating amounts of active warfare mere weeks ago.Β
She tried not to dwell on it much. After all, when Eric King asks for your assistance and involvement, you curtsey and comply. Having known the man for years - she learned the hard way.Β
Clarice hated violence, therefore wasn't a huge fan of war, but then again, who was? She was more of a lover than a fighter.Β
Well, a lover isn't exactly how she'd identify herself either, considering the success ratio of her dating history while knocking at 30's door but "lover" was still a far better way to describe her when compared to "fighter".
The woman looked at the helicopter seat opposite hers, where the Colonel thoughtfully gritted his teeth, a blank expression on his face.Β
He always tended to do that. No wonder his jaw could sink the Titanic.
"Well someone's beaming with excitement." She said sarcastically, popping her gum, loud enough to startle him.
Eric snapped out of it, turning to his assistant.
"Just thinking about how I'm going to… explain all this to my wife."Β
Clarice pouted jokingly, fixing the cap that was on her short head of hair.Β
"She's a big girl, she can take it."
That seemed to force something resembling a smile out of the tense man.
"Hope you're right."
Not long after, they arrived at their destination, the base of Rachel King's team, which seemed to be right in the Iraqi leader's domain. Quite the low blow.Β
Eric hurried out of the helicopter as soon as it touched the ground, it seems, while Clarice took her time collecting her stuff.
She rolled her eyes at the Colonel's urgency. Didn't even help the lady out. Rude.Β
Nonetheless, she followed the man out and towards the Iraqi "castle".
Just as she approached the two men conversing at the entrance, Eric handed the soldier in front of him the order from CENTCOM about the change of command.Β
Clarice smirked. "Didn't you hear? There's a new King in the Castle." She said, proud of her glorious wordplay.Β
"Looks that way." The soldier said.
She put down the case of equipment and considered the man, immediately noticing his almost boyish good looks that contrasted those muscular inked arms of his.
She leaned her weight on one leg, swaying where she stood a bit.Β
His attention shifted to her.Β
"And you are?"
Β
She was about to answer when Eric decided to scold her on how she treated the equipment.
"Careful, Clarice! That's valuable research."
"Yes Siree…" She replied mockingly, rolling her eyes as soon as he looked away.
Turning back to the soldier, she introduced herself with a sheepish smile.
"Doctor Stokes… At your service." She added warmly.Β
"First Lieutenant Jason Kolchek." He greeted.
Hello there, lieutenant… she thought.
Eric looked between them momentarily.
"Well! The briefing room."
Jason nodded and threw a quick glance Clarice's way before gesturing the two of them towards the door.
Colonel King went ahead while Clarice grabbed the equipment.
"Is he always this much of a dick?" The lieutenant asked, unimpressed.
She didn't immediately realize he was talking to her but chuckled nonetheless.
"Ha! So many dick levels. This is like a two. Wait till he turns it up to eleven." Clarice commented before walking in and the man's gaze followed her as she did.
~~~
Inside, Clarice was trailing behind the two men while inspecting the lavish if not… beaten up mansion.Β
"You'll have to excuse the noise and disorder. We're just getting the base set up." He put his hands on each side. "Blows my mind. Only a few weeks ago Saddam was living it up out here. Chowing down on candy bars while some… poor bastard clipped his toenails!"
Clarice raised an eyebrow at him.
"Nice image…"
"If only he could see the state of this place now. Makes me smile." He added before getting ahead.
Well, there's someone with a passion for war. Or a passionate hatred against the enemy. Same thing really.Β
They moved along, running into a soldier working out on the way.Β
Him and Jason exchanged a few words before the older man turned to Dr. Stokes.Β
"Maybe missy here would like to watch me get my sweat on, huh? Wanna spot me, little lady?"
Clarice cringed internally, and so did everyone else in the general vicinity.
"I can see you just fine from here, thanks."Β
She could have said worse. Much worse. Could have made the man wish there was a sinkhole in here somewhere. But decided against it.Β
Jason turned to her with an apologetic smile.
"Ignore Corporal Merwin, he lacks social skills."
Eventually they found themselves in an office set up where, after a brief quarrel, Jason got Eric a full site access.
Ooooh, her hour was nearing, she could feel it.Β
Jason held up the letter from CENTCOM.
"I'm telling you when the Queen Bitch finds out about this, she's gonna flip her shit."
Eric frowned.
"That's my wife you're talking about." He spat angrily before pushing past the lieutenant.Β
Oof… Clarice thought.
"I-I had no idea, I'm sorry."
Oh he's dumb. Cute, but dumb… She noted. Urgh does that mean her whole "King" pun went over his head? What a waste.
She couldn't resist a sassy remark as she passed him, though it earned her his eye roll.
"Nice work, hotshot."Β
They reached a busy hall of some sort, with a circular ceiling, ones you see in churches or mosques and as Clarice set down her equipment, she could hear Jason stutter some apology and the Colonel didn't seem to hold the rude comment about his wife against the Lieutenant.Β
"If it helps, we like to think of it as a term of endearment."
She snort-laughed under her breath as she busied herself with her computer.Β
A few minutes passed when Jason approached her.Β
"Right. Let's get you set up."Β
She eyed him and smiled.
"I hope the bandwidth can cope with the data."
Clarice could basically hear the gears turning in his head as she said that.
"I'll leave the techy stuff to you."
She turned to him, eyes stopping on his arms.
"And I'll leave the heavy lifting to you."
She flirted.Β
He smiled, his dimples sinking.Β
"We got a deal, lady."Β
She felt a flutter in her stomach as she changed the subject.
"What is this place, anyway? Looks like an old ballroom."
Jason nodded.Β
"That's exactly what it is. I guess Saddam liked to get down on the dancefloor." He joked.
Clarice chuckled, eyes on her monitor now.
"Do you think if his dance partner stepped on his foot it'd be an instant "off with her head"?"Β
He laughed heartily.
"It wouldn't surprise me."Β
She straightened and looked him up and down, subtly biting her lower lip.
"Maybe when we're done, I'll let you spin me around a little." She said suggestively, without much thinking, hoping a guy like him wouldn't have cold feet from a direct woman.Β
Jason's eyes widened from her forwardness, but slowly a knowing smirk crept onto his face.Β
"As long as you don't step on my foot." He replied playfully before leaving her side.Β
Clarice stared after him before returning to her work.Β
After some time, Eric held his briefing, addressing the results of his research and development of the "Caelus" thermal satellite that had supposedly discovered Saddam Hussein's chemical weapons silo.Β
He also explained that CENTCOM was going to give them full authorization to raid and search the area, but the approval would take some time. A week at most. Thank God for this base, then.
Great. A week surrounded by the trouble-in-paradise duo and a whole lot of misogynistic soldiers. Fantastic.Β
Well, at least Jason was there to hopefully keep her some… pleasant company.Β
~~~
Hours passed and just as Clarice was getting into the flow of her work she was suddenly… Pretty much done with it.
Done with the data export, supply check, even did a head count while she was at it.
She was just sitting in the office set up from before, communicating and helping with the recon specialists scattered in the area.Β
This was going to be a slow week, she could tell.
Just then, a now familiar face was passing by and decided to peek his head in.Β
"Miss Stokes." Jason greeted her.Β
She wanted to correct him, but decided against it, biting the tip of the pencil she was holding.
"Lieutenant."
"Jason is fine. Or Kolchek. Whatever floats your boat."
Clarice exhaled.
"Says the man who called me Miss Stokes."
He smirked.Β
"I take it you prefer - Doctor Stokes." He said, flipping a chair and sitting on it backwards.
She laughed.
"That's a whole 'nother question. Clarice is just fine."
He considered her.
"So what's a girl like you doing, playing a boy's game, huh, Clarice?"
Her eyes widened at his nerve.Β
"Something's telling me you wouldn't dare ask Rachel the same question." She challenged.
"Nah." Jason shook his head. "Love her or hate her, Rachel is built for this."
"What makes you think I'm not?" She asked, almost offended.Β
He shrugged.
"Just don't strike me as the type, is all."
Clarice clicked her tongue.
"Let's just say… It's an excuse to see the world. And end it there."
He snorted.
"Because an Iraqi war front is such a dream destination…"Β
She laughed and leaned back in her seat, boldly lifting her leg up on the table.
"Yeah, no, not exactly my ideal vacation spot."Β
"What is?"
"Huh?"
"Your ideal vacation spot. What is it?"
"Dunno. Haven't really thought about it." She shrugged. "I guess ultimately anywhere is better than here."
He shrugged right back.
"The weather's nice sometimes."
Clarice groaned.
"As if. It's hot as all fuck. Speaking of…" she stood up. "Be a dear and help me get this off." She said playfully, implying the tactical vest she had on.Β
Jason was baffled by her request, but complied anyway, helping with all the clamps, zippers and Velcro straps of the vest, easing it right off her slender shoulders.
He threw it over his forearm.
"Doesn't seem like something you couldn't have done by yourself."
"It isn't." Clarice confirmed. "Thanks, hotshot."Β
"Don't tell me that's gonna stick."
She smiled.
"Your fate was sealed the second I got here."
Closing the distance between them to retrieve the pack of gum she stuck in one of the many pockets of the vest.Β
"Got it." She whispered, popping one of the bubblegum strips in her mouth. "Want one?"Β
He smiled and took a piece of it as well.Β
"Sure."Β
The woman blew a big bubble and popped it instantly before returning to her seat, the curves of her torso now more obvious without the bulky vest.
"And what about you?"
Jason stared at her in a trance for a second before snapping out of it.
"What? Dream vacation spot?"
"Naaah, that one's super obvious just looking at you, probably some outdoor retreat to… Wyoming or some shit." She mocked.
"Hey! Yellowstone is a great place for a trip!" He defended, only half-joking.Β
She returned to her question.
"I meant what got you here."
"Whaddya think?"Β
"Mmm.." She hummed thoughtfully. "You probably come from a line of soldiers. Dreamed of this all your life. Saluted the next door neighbors since you were 3." She joked. "First word was probably lieutenant."
Jason smiled sadly.
"Not even close, unfortunately."
Her eyes widened.
"Oh? So what's your story?"
The man tensed. The sudden change in his demeanor let her know he didn't want to talk about it.
"Right." She got up and went to take the vest from him. "I probably held you up here for longer than necessary. Thanks for the help with this ol' thing."
He flashed her a friendly smile, heading for the door.
"Anytime, lady."
"...Seriously?"
He pointed at her.Β
"Takes two to tango."
~~~
That evening, almost everyone was escorted to small remote areas which… COULD be referred to as bedrooms. By someone who has never seen a bedroom in their life.Β
There were of course legitimate bedrooms in Hussein's castle that were, of course, hogged by the higher ups. The CO, the ex-CO. The two are fucking married yet still took separate ones. Lieutenant Kolchek got a nice one as well. And Clarice couldn't really complain about her little sleeping area either.Β
Freed from the military appropriate attire, Doctor Stokes remained in her undergarments as well as an undershirt and a grey button up shirt that covered her up to her thighs.Β
She seemed to have jinxed the hot weather earlier because at night it was definitely a lot more chilly. She deduced that climbing under the blanket will help.
Clarice was about to call it a night when a firm and deliberate knock on the door startled her.Β
"Jesus-…"
She cautiously opened the door, only slightly, who knew what some of those soldiers were capable of.
The woman relaxed when she saw the lieutenant.Β
"Jason, hey."She noted the rifle in his hand.Β
"Can't sleep without your lucky gun?"Β
He smirked.
"Just a quick sweep of the perimeter before bed, ma'am. You doing alright?"Β
Clarice opened the door wider and Jason's eyes almost immediately fled to her legs.
"Eyes up here, soldier." She teased.Β
He cleared his throat.
"Sorry." He said sincerely. "Just make sure to not go out during the night."
"Why? Does Merwin sleepwalk commando?" She joked.Β
Jason grimaced.Β
"Thanks for putting that in my head."
"You're quite welcome."
"But, thank God, no. There's just a lot of open air areas. Who knows what the hell gets in and out at night."
"I can handle a few creepy crawlies."
"Didn't say you couldn't. Just warning ya."
She laughed.
"If anything, I'll make sure to put on my best damsel in distress performance just for you."
"Appreciate it." He joked back.Β
She shifted her weight from one foot to the other, feeling the chill air hit her exposed legs.Β
"Do you mind..?"Β
"Of course not. G'night, Miss Stokes."
"Night, hotshot." She said before shutting the door.Β
~~~Β
Hectically, 2 days passed. No one seemed to notice how. A lot of work piled on ahead of the raid, but everyone seemed to make it out of that whirlpool of work, once again enjoying a slow day. The calm before the storm, so to speak.Β
Doctor Stokes hardly got to interact with anyone. Especially considering she mostly worked with earphones in. But she made sure to spare some time for a flirtatious remark or two towards the handsome soldier.
Clarice wouldn't want to lose the attention of Lieutenant Hotshot.Β
She smirked to herself at the thought of the nickname as she set up the computers in the ballroom, first thing in the morning.Β
Clarice searched for one of the main hard drives containing the operation info, but soon realized she couldn't find it.Β
"Where the fuck-... Shit!" She hurried towards the office only to come face to face with Jason.Β
"Whoa, what's the hurry, lady?"
"Not now, Kolchek, I need to find-"
Suddenly he held up the hard drive she was looking for.
"-Exactly that." She snatched it right out of his hands. "Oh, thank God, I would have been fucked with a pipe sideways if I lost this."Β
He snorted.
"Didn't take you for the clumsy type."
Clarice rolled her eyes.
"Everyone was moving shit, must have fell." She complained.
"You're always welcome, ma'am." He added nonchalantly.Β
She smiled reluctantly.
"Thank you."
The woman walked past him back towards the computers, shoving the earbuds back in, now deaf to the outside world.Β
A minute passed. Two. Five.
And she didn't even notice that he was just standing around, leaning against a supply crate and looking at her the whole time until she turned around.Β
Her eyes widened.
"Uh… Penny for your thoughts?"Β
Jason just stared at her, head tilted, hands resting on either side of him on the crate.Β
"Earth to Jason?" She urged.
"Are you up for that spin, lady?"
A tight knot formed in her abdomen as he said that.Β
Clarice turned her back to him slowly, tucking her earphones away.Β
"What spin?" She asked, pretending she didn't know what he was talking about.Β
"I do recall you saying you'd let me… Spin you around when we're done." There was something less… Restrained about the tone of his voice… and she liked it.Β
"Does it look like we're even remotely done?" She teased.
He got off the crate, walking towards her confidently.
"I've followed all my orders. Not doing anything of importance right now. Are you?"
She stared at him for a long moment, closing her computer and shoving the equipment on the table aside with her forearm without breaking eye contact with him.
"Not really."Β
Jason flashed a confident smile.Β
"Then what do you say I spin you around a little, right here, right now, Doctor."Β
Clarice didn't take long to consider, despite the sudden offer. She closed the distance between them almost immediately, smashing her lips against his desperately.Β
And he wasted no time in kissing back, cupping her face in his hands while he deepened the kiss.
She groaned loudly against his lips, reaching a hand up and knocking off his cap before tangling her fingers in his dark brown hair. Eliciting a surprised yet pleased noise from him as she tugged at the strands.Β
Her other hand settled on the back of his neck while his hands ventured lower, impatiently grasping her thighs, ushering her to wrap her legs around him.
Which she did, got her legs around his waist with a quick jump.Β
Jason carried her onto the table before shifting his attention from her lips to her jaw and neck, gently biting and sucking on the sensitive skin while she gasped and helplessly grasped his tactical vest.Β
She struggled with it for a minute before pushing him away in frustration.
"Couldn't have gotten this off before you got here?" She complained.
He chuckled and tugged at the choker around her neck that was getting in the way of his kisses.Β
"This thing's harder to take off than the vest."
Clarice clicked her tongue, pushing him off her entirely.Β
"Get rid of that." She almost ordered, pulling the choker up and over her head.Β
He smirked.
"Yes, ma'am."Β
The woman set aside her accessory, watching him fumble with the vest before finally getting it off a minute or so later.Β
She reached her hand out and grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, pulling him back in for another kiss.Β
Jason parted her lips with his tongue, while his hands moved lower, grabbing the hem of her dark gray shirt and pulling it up and over her head. Though it was warm out, she shivered at the sudden sensation of the air against her torso as she was left only in her white sports bra.
He dipped his head and started kissing her shoulder and collarbone.Β
She noticed his hands fleeing towards his pants as he hurried to undo the buttons and zipper.Β
Someone's in a rush…
Though she'd prefer to take it slower, she didn't mind his approach.
"Give me my backpack." She said, pointing at the bag beside their feet.Β
He complied and Clarice started searching the smaller compartments. Not long after she found the pack of condoms that she packed.Β
Jason laughed at the find.
"What an important thing to pack during a war mission, right?"
"Hey! Condoms are useful for many things."
"Like..?"
She giggled and bit her lip.
"Fucking hot lieutenants."Β
Jason smiled and kissed her again, now busying himself with removing her jeans.
She moaned as he gently stroked down her lower abdomen to her pelvic area. While she impatiently reached out and pulled his shirt off. Very fond of what she saw, she ran a quick hand down his toned torso.
The man quickly yanked her sports bra up, making the fabric bunch up just below her collarbone before pressing himself against her again, exposed chest to chest.Β
He pulled her short strands of black hair, attacking her neck with his tongue again.Β
Clarice clawed gently at his back, getting quite impatient as well.Β
"Fuck-... Jason…"Β
Both of their trousers now bunched up around their thighs, Jason pulled her lower half closer towards him, dry humping her while his hand searched for the condoms she left on the table.
All of a sudden someone cleared their throat behind them, making both of them jump.Β
Rachel stood by the entrance angrily, staring off to the side, to avoid looking at them, a file in her hand.Β
"Shit…" Jason whispered, getting off Clarice and pulling his pants up.
The Doctor's face burned a bright red as she got off the table, covering herself with her shirt.Β
"Doctor Stokes, before you proceed with screwing my lieutenant, could you please type this file out, Eric needs a digital copy."
Rachel requested, still avoiding looking at them.
"O-of course." She mumbled, taking the file from the woman who turned and stomped out of the ballroom immediately.
"F-fuck…" Clarice cursed under her breath, mortified after the encounter.
"Clarice, I'm sorr-"
"No! No I'm sorry, this was absolutely out of line. We shouldn't have." She admitted.
He cleared his throat, disappointed.Β
"I-"
She threw her shirt on and gathered her stuff, deciding to work elsewhere.Β
"If you'll excuse me, lieutenant."
~~~
Within the next few days Clarice couldn't quite shake off the embarrassment of being busted with Jason by Rachel. Her only hope was the abrasive woman didn't immediately gossip with Eric about it, surely she'd lose all of his respect.Β
Furthermore, she couldn't even look the lieutenant in the eye after that.Β
Fuck, she didn't remember the last time she was so embarrassed, she wasn't the shyest person on earth but that was just… awful.
But as her embarrassment faltered, her frustration of the sexual kind resurfaced again.Β
But with it being the night before the raid, she shook off all desires to have sex with the man.Β
After all, they might not see each other ever again after that, might as well bury the embarrassment with her.Β
She basically barricaded herself in her quarters after dark, the sooner she calls it a night, the sooner they'll raid the silo, the sooner she'll get back home.Β
That's it.
That was basically the plan when she laid down… But she couldn't sleep.
"Goddammit…" She whispered to herself.
She laid restlessly for some time when she heard slow footsteps just outside her door.
In the back of her mind she knew exactly who it was, so without thinking she rushed to open the door, before the visitor could even knock.
Just as she suspected, she came face to face with Jason.
"Hey…" He greeted her cautiously.
Clarice sighed.
"Hey yourself."
They stared at each other for a while before Jason dared to break the silence.
"Look, I-"
But before he could say much, Clarice yanked him into the room by his shirt, crashing her lips against his while he made sure to close the door after them.
Both of them realized this could be their last opportunity to sleep together and there wasn't much to lose. They both wanted it. So why fight it?Β
And it didn't take long for them to ditch the effort to be quiet, the occasional pleasured moan ringing out in the corridors of the Iraqi castle.Β
~~~
The next morning, just before the raid, there was a certain bounce in Clarice's step.Β
She was energetically helping gather equipment when she eavesdropped on Merwin's sleazy conversation.
"I swear I was right below them, shit was like a fucking stampede. I guess Colonel pretty boy and wife dearest were patching up their marriage last night, for good luck."Β
"Nah, man, that's impossible." Nick said angrily.Β
"It's okay, buddy, live in your denial." The older man said, hand on Nick's shoulder.
Clarice's eyes widened. Yeah, no, both of them were wrong.
She searched in that crowd of soldiers, locking eyes with Jason who winked at her knowingly.Β
The woman laughed to herself. They better bet their asses that it was good luck.Β
Suddenly Jason approached her with a friendly smile on his face.
She smiled flirtatiously.
"Morning, lieutenant."
"G'morning." He shifted uncomfortably.
"Something on your mind?" She asked in a whisper.
Jason tilted his head thoughtfully.Β
"Maybe when this shit is all over we could… Grab a drink back in the ol' U. S. Of A."
"Are you asking me out, hotshot?" She asked with a smirk.Β
"Depends on the answer, Miss Stokes."
Clarice considered his offer.
"Sure. I'd like that."
He seemed almost surprised that she agreed but was glad nonetheless.
"Great."Β
CHAPTER WARNING: Yee-har, thar be smut afoot in this here chapter. 18+
7- a king
Anthony Stark hadn’t expected all of this to come of his death. He foresaw of some of it. Β
Of Obadiah’s imminent betrayal and Brock’s general ambition, but when Wanda had approached him with her vision all those years ago, he couldn’t have understood what it all meant.Β
Now, however, he realized the violence that was soon to arrive at his kingdom’s doorstep. It was an uneasy feeling; the responsibility bestowed upon him to put men’s lives at risk. To make widows and orphans because of inter family squabbles.Β
But Tony knew that Obadiah and Brock both presented far larger threats in the long term.Β
A king who is hungry for power will never stop to consider the least fortunate in his rule.Β
It was a mantra Tony had created for himself after his father had let entire villages fall to win back some petty golden toy during the War of the Giants. In the end, the lives lost had been worthless and the giants returned to their mountains with more spoils than they’d started.Β
It had made him sick.Β
That was the moment Tony decided to be a better man. A better king. He took pride in his unselfish rule and lack of war among those who shared the boundary with his kingdom. By a miracle he’d gotten Brock into line, but Obadiah had gotten a taste of power from his position in the Giant’s War and wanted more.
Rumors turned to plots, and all at once Tony knew his family and legacy was in danger. He had a troubled relationship with the Wakandans after one of his own barons killed their king in a quest for vengeance after the Giant’s War. Steve had volunteered as ambassador with the shadowy James Barnes (who’d long had a positive relationship with T’Challa) and they’d managed to broker a deal benefiting both nations.Β
And Asgard.Β
That was a whole other bag of complications.Β
Odin had long been distrustful of Tony’s first wife, the late Queen Alexandra due to her Vanir lineage. The Asgardians had fought for centuries trying to eradicate what they’d seen as a dangerous race of uncontrollable magic users.Β
Odin had been a step in the right direction, after replacing his late father, but the prejudices still remained and Tony’s marriage to one of the few remaining Vanir royals had soured what little relations they’d had.Β
Still, in the end, they’d protected you when he so desperately needed help the Asgardians could only provide. To that, he’d offered her hand to the princes, and Odin took the offer into consideration, only backing off when an agreement was made between the two boys and yourself that affections lay elsewhere.
Which brought him to his latest challenge. Your engagement to the monster king, Brock Rumlow.Β
The popular story was that he’d had his late wife killed when she hadn’t produced a male heir. Every female baby prior had been fed to the dogs and at last, when her fifth pregnancy had yielded yet another female, she fell mysteriously ill and died a few nights later. Some say a villager found the baby’s water logged corpse shortly after.Β
From a strategic perspective, it made sense. You hadn’t been called upon by any serious suitors, often running around the kingdom with a begrudging Stephen on your coattails, and you were still young enough to bare a child or two.Β
Brock needed a means of securing trust in the kingdom, and marrying one of its beloved daughters was the way to do it. Not to mention, Obadiah got his army, Peter would be overthrown when he attempted to take his birthright, and both men would share in the mutual benefits of being involved in one of the strongest economies in history.Β
It was a clear cut plan for control of the kingdom, and it would have been more than enough for Tony to take action.
Except for one small caveat.
You.Β
You’d been born of the same Vanir blood as your mother and even as a days old infant, you had shown the Master Sorceress at the time an insurmountable measure of power.Β
It was an old and finicky magic, the woman had warned before your mother’s body had even cooled in bed. You would need trining, but there was no one left to provide.Β
The Asgardians had been thorough in destroying the ancient texts and any remaining Vanir had long fallen into hiding, often using enchanted amulets and trinkets to conceal their seidr from those with wicked intentions.Β
Your mother had been a victim of such vicious greed. She’d been open with her abilities, sharing a close bond with Orin’s own wife and his young son, Loki. The pair had conspired to learn all the forbidden secrets of the Vanir, and she’d begun to accumulate quite the library of resources from old temples and Asgardian burial tombs.Β
Frigga helped her translate and in turn, the relationship with the royal families had warmed considerably until a few days before your birth.Β
Things had fallen apart so quickly. The Northern Kree empire had infiltrated the castle after hearing rumors of the queen’s power. Someone had once written that a single drop of Vanir blood was worth thousands in gold pieces. A bandit had gotten through the gates while she labored, he had ambushed her in the birthing chambers and despite putting up an admirable fight- died with a dagger stabbed through her heart.Β
The beast had tried to cut it free in front of the midwives.Β
The Master Sorceress had only stepped from the room a moment to freshen up her herbal remedies. By the time anyone had made it to her side, she had died, and you’d been cut free of her with that same knife.Β
β€œYour majesty?” Wanda inquired, approaching where he sat by the fire of the rebellion campsite.
β€œYes?” He blinked up, returning to the present at hand. The men who were preparing for battle around him. The women sharpening weapons and sewing leather. Β
The people he had asked to rise up for the betterment of the kingdom. The people who were prepared to die by his side for a secure future.Β
β€œMaster Strange is to meet at my cottage in the hour,” she explained.Β
β€œAnd what would you advise Master Sorceress?” he asked, an amused expression on his face. β€œShall we let him in on our secret?”
β€œWith less than seven days to the wedding, it might be wise,” she reasoned sardonically. β€œNatalia has her own mission in securing the support from within. Master Strange is working with Peter and Loki on securing the vulnerable.”
β€œDo you think he told him?” Tony looked down at the fire pensively.Β
β€œWho?”
β€œLoki,” he clarified. β€œHe and Master Mordo were among the few who knew. They had to have mentioned something to him. He’s- well- I’m not entirely sure what he is to her now, but he’s certainly one of the closest lines of protection to her.”
β€œAssuming the rune hasn’t already faded, I would think he either told him or Stephen found out for himself, my liege,” Wanda sat down on the log next to time, her gaze following his into the flames. β€œHer power is what Amora desires. It needs to be concealed until the princess is in safe hands.”
β€œThen he knows,” Tony decided, nodding to himself. β€œAmora would have done something stupid if the seidr had broken through completely. Someone is keeping it under control.”
β€œI’ll find out,” Wanda promised. β€œWould you like to speak to him?”
Tony made a disgruntled noise at the thought of approaching the sorcerer. House Strange had long served under the Stark banner, proudly riding at the front of the line when called upon for battle. When they sent their oldest to train at Kamar-Taj, Tony had been surprised.
The boy had a knack for strategy and was sharp as a needle point. Tony could have seen the young man easily rise in leadership in the house, ruling his own militiamen and managing the family affairs.Β
But apparently he had no interest in it, and in an unorthodox fashion, the assets had been passed to their eldest daughter.Β
Granted, in the end, none of that mattered- as the entire family estate had been stricken by a particularly nasty plague. The sole survivor was Stephen, who’d been away at Kamar-Taj when he’d gotten the news.Β
He’d rushed home, and in the process gotten sick himself, but with the help of his fellow sorcerers, recovered with the only remnants of the illness remaining in his hands. He often told others it had been a riding accident. Only a select few knew the truth and devastation of his loss.Β
Tony had met with the young man on his sickbed, assuring him the assets would remain in the family. That the castle would maintain the property while he fulfilled his obligations to Kamar-Taj. After all, there was no greater calling thanΒ to a life of service and compassion. It was the least Tony could do.Β
Well, until you had scared off every Master to cross the castle threshold and he’d gotten desperate and asked the boy for a favor.
He should have known better. You were close in age. Equally as ambitious and cunning. For years you’d been sneaking through passages and around the villages at night, often with Natalia at your side.Β
Stephen just made it easier, and helped Tony rest a little easier knowing the man would give his life for you, if need be.Β
Tony wasn’t dumb. He’d seen it the first night the you had met.Β
The sneaking smiles, the conspiratorial whispers in the corners of the ballroom, and when Peter’s cat turned into a lion almost identical to the Stark sigil, Tony knew that one day he might allow that young man to break the oaths he’d made for a single exception.Β
β€œYour highness?” Wanda pried gently for a clearer answer.Β
β€œYes, I’ll speak to him,” he pinched the bridge of his nose. About a great many things.
(β€”)
β€œI somehow don’t believe you just found out about this,” you stated, sitting cross legged on one of the strewn about cushions, a teapot floating delicately from the palm of your hand.Β
β€œI’ve learned a number of thing recently,” he replied dryly. β€œLike Mordo is alive, and Brock wants to kill Obadiah once you’re wed.”
You lost your focus and the cup shattered on the ground.Β
β€œHe what?” you gaped at Stephen while he repaired the ceramic cup with a wave of his hand.Β
β€œIt ties into the whole secret magic thing, but it really isn’t an ideal situation,” he explained, setting the cup aside and dropping to the cushion across from you.Β
β€œI guess it’s good I’ve pestered you for your books over the years,” you mused, flexing your fingers in the air in front of you.
β€œIt isn’t the same,” he sighed, watching while you lifted a few other stray objects and paused them between the two of you. β€œSeidr is... there isn’t documentation. The books were destroyed. Kamar-Taj had a few tomes but the Vanir language is nearly impossible to translate at this point.”
β€œWhat about Loki? Or Frigga?” you asked, moving both your hands at once and dropping a feather into his lap with a grin.Β
β€œBelieve it or not, I’ve been focused on other issues,” he muttered dryly. β€œWe’re going to have to seal this before you leave.”
β€œBut you said it’s what preventing Amora from taking over my head,” you reminded him pointedly, summoning a small flame from an incantation you’d studied the day before. Extinguishing it between your palms, you looked up at him for a better excuse.Β
β€œBut it isΒ alsoΒ the reason Brock is forcing you into a marriage and so she can control you, and in turn, your power better than you can,” he explained tersely. β€œShe can’t know you’ve gotten partial control over it. Let her underestimate you, but until you can learn to conceal the energy yourself, you can’t risk exposure.”
β€œSo am I being sealed or not?” you asked impatiently, floating a candle from you to him. He took it with an amused half-smile, extinguishing the light with a quick puff of air. β€œCan you do a... half seal? Hide the energy, keep some of the good parts?”
β€œGods, I don’t know,” he groaned, shaking his head while he seat the canclde aside. β€œThis is entirely new territory that I was not trained for.”
β€œThat must mean you’re a terrible Sorcerer Supreme. What fool put you in charge?” you teased, reaching forward and tapping the top of his nose playfully.Β
β€œIt’s not my fault you’re a freakish anomaly that’s supposed to be extinct,” he mumbled, pulling a frown while you laughed. β€œGive me your wrist.”
β€œFine, but when this over I demand you help me train properly,” you stated and though heΒ  continued grumbling under his breath about being too old for your games, he agreed. β€œAnd Loki helps too.”
β€œNot part of the deal,” Stephen scowled.Β
β€œFine, I’ll marry him then,” you smirked back at him. β€œYou still haven’t asked, so I guess when my wedding tragically falls through, I’ll have to find respite with him.”
He pulled you forward, a glint in his eyes that sent a shiver through your entire body.Β
β€œI’m not going to chase after a betrothed woman, it’s bad taste,” he hummed, fingers crawling up your wrist and intertwining with your fingers. β€œI have a reputation to uphold, even if you feel comfortable hiding away with strange men in dark places.”
β€œIs that supposed to be a joke?” you whispered, sitting up on your knees and tilting your head.
β€œDo you not think I’m funny?” he murmured, reaching with his free head and tilting back your chin. A smile played on the corners of your mouth, both of you sizing the other up and daring the other to make the first move.Β
β€œI can think of many things you are,” you lifted his hand and pressed a tender kiss to his palm. β€œBut funny?”
β€œYou laugh at all of my clever wit, don’t try to deceive me princess, I know the truth,” Stephen sharply pulled your hand forward, forcing you to fall into his chest. He held your lower back, gazing down at you adoringly. β€œYou’re trying to hide it, but I see it in your eyes.”
β€œDo you know what I see in your eyes?” your voice cracked ever so slightly, your hand cradling his cheek, your thumb lightly tracing the sharp features.Β
β€œWhat do you see?”
β€œStrength,” you murmured, transfixed by his opalescent gaze. All at once, it was like you were seeing him for the first time. You could feel the energy radiating off of him, seeing the waves of magic as they ripples through his body. β€œDevotion to... Stephen you’re beautiful.”
β€œOr so the stars whisper to the earth below,” his voice was soft, gentle, while his hand guided itself up your arm to your cheek. β€œBut, what the stars do not see is their own radiance, their own ethereal light shimmering across the velvet heavens above. The stars do not know how the Earth worships the very flicker of their existence, tells stories of their magnificence and beauty. The do not know how the Earth finds its meaning in what little time it steals away to them in the night.”
It all happened very quickly after that.Β
You peeled at his robes, he worked at your corset, a frenzy of hands and mouths tasting one another in a way neither had ever imagined.Β
Discarding the corset, he worked his hands up your blouse, fingers lightly teasing the tip of your nipple until you let out a satisfied moan. Robes loose, you pushed him back against a nearby pile of cushions, climbing between his legs and peppering hungry kisses up and down his neck until he growled, clawing at your hips.Β
β€œIf you’re-,” he tired protesting while you pulled away more clothing, pressing his leg between yours and letting out a whimper of pleasure when he shifted in just the right way.Β
That seemed to set something off in him.Β
He was over you, flipping you to the ground and pulling what little clothing remained between you, your naked bodies now flush. Stephen moved down to your breast, drawing a nipple between his teeth and watching you squirm under him at the incredible sensation.Β
β€œPlease,” you mewed, an absolute wreck under him.Β
He took his time, moving to the other nipple and repeating his actions until you were begging for any kind of release.Β
β€œNeedy are we?” he murmured in your ear, his voice low and so controlled, you couldn’t understand how he could stand it. Goosebumps erupted over your body, and he just smirked, continuing his exploration. Β
Teasing a finger at your entrance, he looked to you for final approval before easing the digit into you.Β
β€œGods,” he hissed, moving the finger at an agonizingly slow speed. β€œYou’re the most beautiful thing I’ve ever laid eyes upon.”
He caught you in a kiss, speeding up his hand below, his thumb searching for the sensitive nub of nerves. When he grazed over the tender area, you nearly shot out of yourself, the sensation feeling downright sinful.Β
Pulling his finger out, you let out another whimper, this one of protest at the emptiness inside of you.Β
β€œAre you certain-?” he asked again, eyes scanning your face for any sign of hesitation or doubt.Β
β€œI’ve never been more certain of anything,” you replied honestly. It wasn’t an exaggeration. You’d been a make up to this point, untouched and with no interest in engaging in such outrageous behavior.
Yet with him, you wished you could give more. Your body. Your soul. Your love. What did it matter anymore? He was yours, sitting before you and showing you through his loving car assess and sensations you’d never known before this moment.Β
He eased himself in, giving you time to adjust to his length, the member much larger than his single finger. But Gods, did he feel incredible.Β
You’d never thought so much emotion and pleasure could occur in a single moment. For this tiny hidden corner of the universe, you felt like your souls had collided and merged.Β
It was a far cry from how Nat had told you it was.Β
This was- you anticipated each of his movements, raising your hips to meet his as he crashed inside of you. Your brain couldn’t form coherent thoughts and when he started to coax something feral from within your core, you let him lead you through it.Β
Pumping in time with strokes to your clit, you clenched your walls around him, pulling a hissed curse from the sorcerer.Β
A few more pumps and a final circle around the sensitive area and you felt your orgasm crash over you.Β
At first, you thought you’d done something wrong. Did you break something? How did this feel so incredible and overwhelming all at once?Β
While you rode out your bliss, you felt his hips tighten, finishing with a final grunt.
You both stated at one another, eyes wide, trying to catch your breath.Β
β€œHave you-,” you started but paused. β€œLike that before-?”
It was no secret Stephen wasn’t exactly a virgin. He had his vows but they were against attachment, not sex, and sometimes, as he put it, the spirit needed to be revitalized.Β
You’d called him a creep and moved on, but Gods did you understand now.Β
β€œI don’t know what happened,” he blinked, looking thoroughly bewildered. β€œThat’s... I’ve never- my gods, you’re incredible.”
He pulled out, dropping to the ground next to you with a huff.Β
β€œI have a potion,” he muttered, pointing to the table above them. β€œPrevents pregnancy.”
β€œAnd here I thought you were devoted to me,” you poked him in the rib and he just laughed.Β
β€œI am,” he insisted. β€œHowever, I’m not devoted enough to end up in the gallows for deflowering a princess who is betrothed to a ruthless king. My apologies, my grace.”
β€œHm, I’m sure I can find someone willing to make that sacrifice for me,” you hummed.Β
β€œAnd a fool he will be,” he leaned up on his elbow. β€œI still win the day. He would be hanged and I still get my princess.”
β€œYour princess?”
β€œHas it been any other way?” he asked, quirking a brow. β€œTruly, if I’m mistaken, tell me. I don’t want to sound too over ambitious.”
You considered it briefly. Had it?Β
No, you knew from the moment you spied those eyes at the ball welcoming him to the castle that he was your future. You just hadn’t realized what that meant at the time.Β
There was no world, no life, where you could live without him by your side.Β
The thought sobered you quickly, your upcoming nuptials springing to mind, the spell locking you in your private world, now lifted.Β
β€œWould you have asked my father?” you asked.Β
β€œIn another life, we would have been married by now,” he answered earnestly. β€œI’m a fool for having hesitated and nearly missed my chance at an eternity by your side.”
β€œAnd Brock?” you asked, the name leaving a sour taste in your mouth. Stephen’s expression darkened at mention of the man.Β
β€œI’ll kill him before he touches you,” he vowed. β€œI will not yield your heart to such a monster, and I will stop this. I cannot risk you leaving my side. Not again, my love.”
You leaned forward and kissed him, soft, intimate, and gentle. Stephen wasn’t a fighter.Β
Certainly he could fight, but you knew him well enough to know that violence was a last option after all other options had been tried. And here he was preparing to declare a one man war on your betrothed.Β
Truly, the heavens were smiling upon you in this life.
(β€”)
Later that evening, when Stephen had returned you safely to your quarters, he met with Wanda at her cottage at the edge of the woods to discuss the next steps in the plan.Β
When she caught sight of him, her expression shifted from confused to elated to-
β€œWhat is it?” he asked, knowing she’d gotten a read of what he’d been up to previously.Β
β€œDo well to conceal your thoughts,” she warned, leading him inside.Β
β€œConceal what-?” he asked after her, stopping in his tracks when he saw Anthony sitting at her table, sipping at a large horn of water.Β
Tony stood up, giving the man a once over, brows raised as he took him in.Β
β€œYou couldn’t wait until the wedding night?” he grumbled, dropping back down in his chair with a long sigh.Β
SYNOPSIS: Claire Beauchamp, Section One operative makes her way to Hong Kong as profiled on her PDA mission profile.
CHAPTER 4
Once off the plane at Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong’s futuristic and ultra-efficient International Airport, Claire Beauchamp checked through Immigration and went in search of the correct carousel to reclaim her luggage. As she waited with all the other tired and anxious passengers, Claire fleetingly looked around at the many faces of fellow passengers. There were people going about their business, and excited tourists commencing their holidays pushed forward to claim their belongings when they made an appearance on the carousel. Finally collecting her baggage Claire made her way toward Customs like all the other disembarking passengers. The officious uniformed Immigration officials sat at ridiculously high desks blocking their faces below eye level. It seemed that all were wearing wire-framed glasses, were very serious and never offered the hint of a smile. Standing in the queue Claire slowly moved forward until it was her turn to approach the desk. Glancing at her passport the official asked, β€œAre you in Hong Kong for business or pleasure?” Business … unfortunately. Pleasure … if I’m lucky. Β Actually … I’m in Hong Kong on a mission … a very dangerous undercover mission for Section One ... the world’s most clandestine anti terrorist organisation. Ever heard of it? ... No? ... Well we’re after the elusive leader of the Rising Dragons. Do you know him? ... Sun Yee Lok? ... Ring any bells? Obviously suffering from some jet lag, Claire’s mind went off on this flippant tangent before she answered the waiting Custom’s official. β€œI’m on holiday,” she replied casting a mega watt smile in the official’s direction. He casually glanced her way, having heard the same reply thousands of time and methodically stamped Claire’s passport with the patented response. β€œEnjoy your stay in Hong Kong.” β€œThank you,” she replied and took her passport from the counter. Claire once again collected her belongings and made her way to the Arrivals hall. Ever watchful for anything suspicious she casually glanced around her surroundings. It was a bustling area divided into two distinct areas. Big plasma TV panels installed in both allowed waiting meeters and greeters to see arriving passengers as they entered either area. Miniature gardens added a green touch to both ends of the hall as well. But it was the aromatic smells of food readily available that tempted Claire’s taste buds. Realising how very hungry she was, she couldn’t remember the last time she had eaten having left Section One immediately after the briefing. Claire’s stomach let her know it was probably hours since any food had passed her mouth and she was sorely tempted to sample some of the superb selection of fare at food outlets catering to all kinds of cuisine. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ The airport was beautiful, modern and quite easy to manoeuvre around. Claire next proceeded into the waiting area of the Meeting Point located at the centre of the Arrivals hall. It was a clearly marked area to meet and greet passengers upon arrival. There was a bustle of people milling around waiting for friends and family as was common at all international and domestic airports. Scanning the area, Claire made her way towards a colourful sculpture given to the Hong Kong SAR Government by Chongqing City to celebrate the reunification of the territory with its motherland China that was placed near the exit. Arriving in Hong Kong was like stepping into a whirling mass of humanity with a dynamism that was unforgettable. The atmosphere was electric and Claire felt the excitement of this exotic city wash over her. If only this was anything but a mission, she would definitely be in a different frame of mind. Many eyes focused on the beautiful, tall, brunette woman who stood out from the crowd no doubt wondering whom she may be meeting, but people looked away just as quickly when her eyes connected with theirs. However, unbeknownst to Claire, one pair of eyes watched her surreptitiously. He smiled to himself before flipping open his cell phone to make a call. Merging with the cosmopolitan crowd Claire Beauchamp walked further along the exit where a stream of Chinese messengers awaited the disembarking passengers. Patient operators held up placards with the names of many different hotels, while tour guides rushed around. All were wearing white shirts and dark pants which seemed a mandatory uniform coupled with quite a few looking like the Customs officials who wore wire rimmed glasses below their dark hair. They were checking lists with the names of passengers waiting to be escorted to their respective hotels and babbling quickly in Chinese. Looking around Claire couldn’t help but notice one person who stood out distinctly from the others. The man was wearing a colourful Hawaiian shirt and was holding up an iPad bearing her name. Picking up her baggage, she made her way over to him.
β€œHi … I’m Claire Beauchamp,” she said smiling at him.
β€œAh, Miss Beauchamp … Welcome to Hong Kong. I hope you had a pleasant flight from Sydney.”
β€œYes, I did thank you.”
My name is Angus Mhor from the Hong Kong Police,” he said showing her his identification badge before placing it back in his pocket. β€œHere let me take your luggage. Accommodation has been arranged for you in a lovely apartment overlooking Victoria Harbour.” β€œHow lovely. Thank-you.” β€œI’m afraid it is not as beautiful as the view of your Sydney Harbour but it is beautiful nonetheless.” β€œI’m sure it will be fine.” β€œMy superior, Senior Superintendent Zheng is expecting you, and once you are settled in he is looking forward to meeting you at Police Headquarters later today.”
β€œThank you Mr. Mhor, I’ll look forward to meeting with him as well.”
Meanwhile ... at Hong Kong Police Headquarters
Senior Superintendent Xiao Zheng sat huddled over the mounting pile of cases on his desk. All the latest ones seemed to point to some connection between the Rising Dragons triad and the victims. For some time his department had been investigating these connections in line with the rise in kidnappings and murders that had taken palace in Hong Kong over the last couple of months. However, he was at his wits end trying to piece together all the evidence building on this notorious triad’s members and its elusive leader Sun Yee Lok. This was precisely why he had called in outside help because he needed someone with a covert background who could be placed undercover on this case. He looked at the photo kit picture of Claire Beauchamp from the Australian Federal Bureau of Police. She had volunteered to be part of an exchange program with the Hong Kong Police. Claire was a beautiful young woman, a β€œlooker” if ever he saw one. Pity he was happily married, he smiled to himself. It was hard to believe that a woman with her looks was so lethal, but she came with excellent credentials from her superiors. Claire Beauchamp was not only a stunning woman she was deadly accurate too. He was very impressed with her rΓ©sumΓ© as he read information about her last covert work in Parramatta and Redfern. It seemed that Miss Beauchamp had undergone a National Undercover Operatives’ Training Program in Australia, passing with flying colours. She had excelled in all areas as well as personal defence, martial arts, assessment and competency skills. Zheng was most pleased that he had been able to snare her for a short time in Hong Kong to work on this specific case. He knew that Claire would be an invaluable asset to the police given her forte was undercover work. Perhaps she would be better suited to the OCTB, Hong Kong's Organized Crime and Triad Bureau, but she could transfer there for an extended stint if need be … once this case was closed. Zheng knew that his counterpart at OCTB Detective Jiang Ng, could use her services, but he never really trusted the man. There was something about him that made his hackles rise but he couldn’t put his finger on the pulse of his uncertainty. Perhaps it was because the man was so overconfident and arrogant? What he did know for certain was he didn’t like him and that was that. Nevertheless, he was grateful for Claire Beauchamp’s expertise and that could prove to be quite useful in helping to discover the perpetrator of the recent deaths on the junk. Angus Mhor had radioed him to say that Miss Beauchamp had arrived and they were on the way to her apartment on Hong Kong Island. β€œMei Ling!” Zheng bellowed at his new recruit. She came running over to his desk. β€œYes Sir?” β€œBring me the file on this afternoon’s murder of Mr. Wu and the woman …” β€œYes Sir,” she replied obediently. However, before she could leave to do his bidding he issued another order. β€œβ€¦ and bring me a cup of coffee. I think this is going to be a long night.” β€œYes … Sir.” Mei left as quickly as she had arrived at his desk thinking that her new boss was as hardnosed as she had been told. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Claire followed Angus Mhor to the Ground Transportation Centre where he had left his car. There she saw a highly efficient and comprehensive transportation network connected to the passenger terminal. Airport express trains and an extensive public transport interchange with facilities for taxis, franchised buses, tour coaches; hotel limousines and private cars were to be found on the multi-levelled structure. Taking Claire’s luggage from the baggage trolley he placed it in the trunk of the car. Making small conversation as a way of "breaking the ice" between them as they got into the vehicle Angus said, β€œPity we don’t fly into Kai Tak Airport anymore.” β€œWhy’s that?” Claire asked interestingly. β€œThere was an element of danger involved in its spectacular urban landing approach which was much more thrilling and beautiful than our new modernized airport.” β€œIt sounds exciting.” β€œOh … yes it was.” Angus sighed pensively, remembering the many times he had returned home from overseas assignments. β€œDuring the last few seconds of landing you were actually flying between high-rise buildings that were very close on both sides and higher than the aeroplane.” β€œWow! That would have been amazing.” β€œThe old airport had spectacular views of the city when landing and taking off. Pity things have to change, don’t you think Miss Beauchamp?” β€œSometimes the more things change the more they stay the same,” she added thoughtfully. Settling in the driver’s seat, Angus gave Claire a wink in the rear vision mirror. β€œIt’s quite a distance to downtown Hong Kong and will take us about an hour. I guess it's the price you pay for modernization.” Having said that Angus then turned on the ignition, pumped the accelerator and sped off in the direction of Lantau Island.
