Iam kind of gratefull for this bts break. It has allowed me to take a step back and reflect on why iam still here. I have discovered bts in 2020 and since then I haven't gone a day without watching content and thinking about them non stop. Iam happy that this obsession is reduced. I used to watch them during my breaks at work I stopped hanging out with my coworkers and even while studying I couldn't focus for longer than 20 min. So this break has allowed me to take a step back and wonder why I was this obsessed.
I feel like the constant stream of content and armies over hyping everything the boys do caused me to hyperfocus on them. To be honest I never cared about celebrities and their private life put when you are in a place where people are constantly praising bts for the littlest things, putting them on a high pedestal and telling you how you need to support them or else you are not a real fan. It really gets to you.
I find celeberty culture so wierd honestly why are we so obsessed with these people? Why do we feel the need to protect these strangers most of us never met and why do we get so afraid of them having flaws?
Iam trying to find new hobbies now. I try to just be a casual fan but it's a little hard : (
Do you have any tips?
Hi anon!
I also think this break is beneficial. Or it should be because as you said, it allows us to take a step back and maybe use this opportunity to focus on other parts of our lives which are still connected to entertainment, pop culture and/or hobbies. The constant stream of content keeps us hooked and it affects our online presence because we don't want to miss a thing and because it also makes us feel good. The relationship is already established so once we enter a period in which we don't receive what we are used to, there is the risk of destabilization. And this can go multiple ways. You can either look at it as a good thing because it gives you the opportunity to think about your behavior (which is something that you said you've done), or in other cases it makes people more anxious and demanding because they don't know how to deal in a situation where there is a lack of content. When it comes to celebrity culture, this is not something new, but it is exacerbated today because of social media. People used to be interested in celebrities since the 19th century (so I've read at some point, perhaps I'm wrong) and the 20th century, with its moving pictures made people more interested in seeing actors and singers which to this day, are still high up in the celebrity hierarchy. It's also a bit similar to a form of worship.
Why are we interested in celebrities? Because they are different than the average person. We may like gossip as well and knowing stuff about others, but X who is just a barista at the local coffee shop is not as interesting as I don't know, Lady Gaga. And with BTS, I have probably mentioned this already in other posts, is that we get so much content that makes us think we know them better than other celebrities. That we understand them. And there is a huge advantage here which is that they are nice guys and their type of content reflects that. Just look at Run BTS and Bon Voyage. We like to see a friendship like that. And they're funny and polite and they are beautiful men. That's a killer combination.
As to any tips, I can only tell you what I do now, and this is a process that started way before this break. I try to go back to the things that I liked before BTS. I stopped watching films for almost 2 years, but now I'm back at it. I try to read more, something that it's not fanfiction. I'm currently failing at that, as Zadie Smith's Swing Time is currently sitting on my nightstand with only 30 pages read while I still devour fanfiction almost every night because it relaxes me. But I'm not giving up. I also have to focus more on work now, which definitely doesn't allow me to think about BTS 24/7. You can try and pick a hobby for which you don't need to use technology. You can paint or draw just for the sake of it, maybe try knitting (it's very relaxing and it helps you clear your head). Or you can tell yourself that you will check for updates or watch BTS content only during certain times during the day.
Hope this helps :)
