Two days. 48 hours. That's all it was. That's all Roman had to wait. After the end of those two days and then he would be going to bed and waking up on the day of the Grimm's Fairy Tale Masquerade. He was so excited. So very very excited. He could hardly contain the feeling. He was sitting in his hotel room watching the box sitting on the table. The box that held his costume. He had yet to open it and look inside, he wanted to wait until the night of the masquerade to put it on to make the experience even more magical, but the suspense was absolutely killing him! How was one supposed to wait?!?! It was as if he was Pandora and this was his box. Or jar. Roman groaned and flopped back onto the bed. "Oh! How will I ever bear the wait?!" He exclaimed dramatically and laid his hand against his forehead as if he was feeling faint.
Now if someone were in the room with him, Roman would have continued to be dramatically extra. But seeing as he was alone, he soon found boredom consumed him once again. Too antsy to stay still and come up with new movie ideas yet too bored to go out on the town, Roman found himself at an impasse. He briefly contemplated the idea of going next door to his brother's room to hang out with him, but after some thought, the idea was pushed aside. He had spent a long time traveling over to Germany with only his brother and their bodyguard and friend, Patton as his company. Now while Patton was wonderful company, the bubbly bodyguard had gone to bed as soon as the Disney Twins were settled into their room. The flight had taken its toll on their friend. So Roman was stuck in this weird plane of existence in which one has the want to do things but does not have the drive. Roman sighed and slid off his bed before shuffling over to his suitcase. He had been putting off unpacking since they got here, but he couldn't go out on the town without Patton considering it would be much more enjoyable with his best friend by his side. So, with a heavy heart, Roman unzipped his suitcase.
Slowly, he pulled out different fashionable outfits for which he could wear during his time here. All were carefully folded placed neatly in the drawers of the dresser. Once he finished with that, he took out all his shower products and gathered them in his arms before setting them up in the bathroom. Next, he grabbed his skincare bag and placed it on the bathroom counter. And finally, he pulled out his entire makeup case. Now, of course, he could have just brought the makeup he would need for his various outfits but considering he didn't know what his masquerade outfit looked like, he decided it was better safe than sorry and packed his entire collection of makeup. He quickly set it up in front of the mirror and opened the case so he wouldn't have to worry about it tomorrow. After moving the suitcase up and out of the way, he stood back with a proud smile. Taking a quick peek at the clock told him only a half-hour had passed. He groaned and flopped face-first into his bed. "Why must this day take forever!?!??!" He exclaimed. He laid there for a few moments to be more dramatic. Eventually, he rolled over and looked up at the ceiling like a teen having a hard day in a movie. For the second time that night, Roman debated going next door and bugging his brother before he decided against it. It really wasn't worth it. He loved his brother, he truly did, but after spending an unbearable amount of time with him in a plane with no escape, he really needed time to recharge. It didn't help that his brother was bored. It was like his brother's brain created things even more gory and disgusting and cursed than usual as it tried to battle boredom.
Roman sat up and glanced at the window. Maybe he could work on his newest project. The boredom began to drip away as he got excited about the new movie he was working on. Now admittedly, Roman would have preferred this type of movie to have come out from Disney already. He really could have used this movie when he was younger. But nevermind that, Roman was actually a little excited that he was the one to start this new type. It really would be him leaving his mark on the Disney name. Just the thought left a giddy feeling.  And honestly, Roman knew he would be the best for the job. And his mind was bursting with ideas! He truly wanted this new fairytale to be special. He wanted little gay children to look up at the screen and go, "Hey! That's me!" This would be the first in a long line of movies like this. Roman didn't care what critics or anyone else said. There needed to be more representation. And he was going to give in to them. Who knows, maybe if Disney did it, everyone else would follow.
Now, of course, there was the question of the plot. What was his Gay Disney Prince gonna do? What was his story? How would he go about making a new fairytale with that classic fairytale feel? Of course, Roman knew he could do it, but he wanted to get that perfect feeling. That just- homey feeling, that youthful feeling. He wanted to get the magic just right. But how exactly to do that? What if he missed something? Anxieties and insecurities often ate away at Roman when it came to things like this. He needed to give them something worthy of them. Roman stood up and grabbed his notebook and pencil case from his bag. He walked over to the desk in the room and sat down. Opening to a crisp, fresh page he jotted down the overall theme. Gay Disney Prince in fancy script ran delicately across the page. Because of course, Roman learned how to write fancy. He was, in all ways, extra. He sat back and just let his mind wander. Allowing for creative thoughts to flow. If only it were that easy. Roman tried to focus. He really did, but staring at those words on the page led to him thinking about crushes which led him to think about Virgil Grimm which of course led him to think about the masquerade AND Virgil which really wasn't helping him much. Roman slumped in his chair and sighed. Should he just give up on this? Get someone else on the project? Roman groaned. Then, fate seemed to intervene. An idea came to Roman as if a gift from the Muses themselves. "What if I get Virgil to work on this with me!!"
Soon Roman was up and bouncing around the room excitedly. "It could be a collaboration!" He hopped onto the bed with joy. "AHHHHHHHH!!!" He screamed. "I'm so nervous!!!" He placed a dramatic hand to his forehead. "Oh, woe is me! However, may I get over this fear?!?" Roman sighed. Bored once again. He was too restless. He couldn't help it. But he despised it. After a few minutes of lamenting his boredom, he got up and got ready for bed. Before getting in his bed, he turned on a playlist of Disney music to lull him to sleep. Despite his restlessness, he was able to fall asleep fairly easily. Dreams of a fairy tale masquerade yet to happen.

A Kiss a Decade in the Making
Pairing: Malex, Alex Manes/Michael Guerin
Words: 4.8K | Rating: T | On AO3
"Is Jenna going to schedule snogging rehearsals for us?”
Alex smiles at him.
“It’s a fair question to ask. How do we, two people who’ve only just met, play two men who’ve been in love for a decade?"
Initially, the story stems from the question how the actors - who hadn't met before filming the pilot - may have worked out the 'logistics' of the Malex kiss in 1x01, and whether there was something like a snogging rehearsal. Any similarities between the characters and the actual actors are - of course - purely coincidental. ;)
A couple of dialogue snippets from the original Roswell New Mexico 1x01 script have made their way into the fic, they are displayed in a 𝚍𝚒𝚏𝚏𝚎𝚛𝚎𝚗𝚝 𝚏𝚘𝚗𝚝.
This fic has been sitting in my WIP folder for months and initially I had no plans to ever post it, but thanks to the wonderful encouragement and helpful beta works of @i-never-look-away & @cosmiceverafter, here it is. Love you, guys! ♥
~*~
When they get up to leave showrunner Jenna Cameron’s office, there’s a moment of hesitation as they arrive at the door at the same time. Michael takes the initiative and opens the door. He can’t help himself and bends his knee in a ridiculous half curtsy while he gestures at Alex to walk out first. Alex looks slightly bewildered for a moment but then he smiles.
“Thank you, Michael.
Michael perks up. Not many people call him Michael, there are way too many Michaels in the world, that’s why he goes by Guerin everywhere.
“You can call me Guerin, it’s what everyone does.”
Alex nods.
“I’ll think about it. I like it though. Michael. It’s a good name. Suits you.”
He walks off and leaves a stunned Michael behind. What does that even mean, he’ll  think about it? Michael’s just a name. Not a bad name, he also considers it a lucky name, after all it has landed him a role that could very well be his first leading role in a major network TV show. At least that’s what he likes to think.
For that to happen, the show just needs to get picked up to series. After reading the script and hearing Jenna talk about what she envisions, he’s even more confident that the show has great potential. If they are going to do this right, they will be picked up.
Doing it right is the thing though. He already loves Mikel Rath, sees a lot of himself in him, and a lot of things he can at least relate to. The quick wit, the anger issues, the sarcastic and funny side of him.
There’s just one thing he’s unsure about. The thing with Alistair. The Alistair & Mikel thing. He wonders what their moniker would be? Milistair? Or Alikel? Do they have to come up with one themselves, or will they leave that to the fans? He makes a mental note to ask Jenna about it.
Michael has a bunch of LGBTQ friends, he’s even part of the community himself (although he’s never acted on it, which sometimes makes him feel like he’s not allowed to claim membership), and he’s lived in LA long enough to be aware of the significance of LGBTQ representation on screen. He knows how important this relationship is going to be to many people. How important it is to get it right. From what Jenna’s just told them, she has a lot in mind for these two characters, but only if there’s going to be a show Aliens of New Mexico .
The pilot only gives them one shot at selling it. It won’t just be on their shoulders alone, of course, Liz and Max will have to do most of the heavy lifting with their characters, but he has a feeling that this Alistair and Mikel thing will still play a vital role in TV executives making a decision that could change his life forever.
Michael takes a deep breath and slowly walks back to his trailer. On the way he recalls the meeting he had with Jenna and Alex. Jenna’s awesome, he’s met her before back in LA, and she’s also responsible for hiring him. He met Alex for the first time in Jenna’s office just now, though. He hasn’t had much time to get to know the man yet.
Alex had been earnest during their meeting, notes written in the margins of his script and post-its marking some pages. He’d asked Jenna a lot of questions during their read through of the Alistair & Mikel scenes.
It had been interesting to listen to an experienced TV actor asking all these questions. Michael had never been an avid watcher of  Charming Young Deceivers, but even he had heard about Gemma & Mic’s popularity. Referred to as  Gemic by fans, they’d been crowned Best TV Couple in almost every online poll for several years, and Alex Manes had won three Teen Choice Awards for his portrayal of Mic, plus two others with his co-star for Best Couple. They’d also won three awards for Best Kiss. So, no pressure.
When Michael had found out that Alex Manes would play Alistair, he’d almost felt a bit giddy because he instantly knew what face went with the name.
He’d then done what he imagined most people would've done in his position: he’d gone and looked up Alex Manes in news and on social media. Since Instagram seemed to be his personal favorite, he went there first. Impressive follower count, very curated content (gorgeous photos though), cute dog (a beagle called Buffy, Alex had tagged her ‘Love of my Life’ in several photos). Alex seemed like an interesting guy who was not only very photogenic, but also had great taste in interior design, music, and he loved to travel. Michael had been looking forward to meeting him.
Then he’d read Alex’s Wikipedia entry. Like the character he was about to play, he came from a military family, his parents got divorced when Alex was in middle school and he’d grown up with his mom, while his three older brothers had stayed with their dad. He’d filmed a couple of indie movies and to Michael’s surprise, had released a number of singles. Michael’d listened to all of them and really liked them. One song had stood out to him in particular, a duet with Rosa Ortecho, a household name in the LA indie music scene. Michael was impressed.
Reading about the incident in Afghanistan, where Alex had been visiting US troops and lost part of his leg when their convoy had been attacked, had made Michael swallow hard. He’d then gone back to Alex’s Instagram account and looked through some of his more recent pictures. Now that Michael was aware of what had happened, he’d noticed a crutch in the background of some of the pictures. And there was a photo of Alex in a German military hospital, a beautiful dark-haired woman (probably his mom) by his side.
Now that they’ve met, Michael is not sure what to think of Alex, who seems to be so much more than the handful of “facts” Michael had gathered from the internet. Alex had been nothing but friendly during their meeting with Jenna, he’d often looked at Michael, had tried to include him in the conversation (it had seemed like he’d been aware that Michael didn’t come with the same kind of TV experience under his belt as he did), had asked him questions, had listened with great attention when Michael spoke.
All things considered it had been a great meeting. It had given Michael much needed input to get a better idea of the Alistair & Mikel dynamic. And yet her he is, still feeling somewhat insecure about it.
There’s one line in the pilot script that stood out to him in particular when he read the script for the first time, and it’s been nagging him ever since.
𝚆𝚒𝚝𝚑 𝚗𝚘 𝚒𝚗𝚍𝚒𝚌𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗 𝚘𝚏 𝚠𝚑𝚘 𝚖𝚊𝚔𝚎𝚜 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚏𝚒𝚛𝚜𝚝 𝚖𝚘𝚟𝚎, 𝚓𝚞𝚜𝚝 𝚖𝚞𝚜𝚌𝚕𝚎 𝚖𝚎𝚖𝚘𝚛𝚢 𝚜𝚙𝚛𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚝𝚘 𝚕𝚒𝚏𝚎 -- 𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚢’𝚛𝚎 𝙺𝙸𝚂𝚂𝙸𝙽𝙶
Muscle memory springing to life? How are they going to pull  that off when they barely know each other?
When Michael reaches his trailer, he looks around. Max’s trailer is to his left, Isobel’s trailer is to his right, Liz is right across from him. Valenti’s trailer’s right to Liz’s, and if memory serves him right, Alex’s trailer is to Liz’s left.
With just an idea in his mind, Michael crosses the short distance and knocks on the door of Alex’s trailer.
“Come in.”
Michael opens the door and is hit by a waft of warm air that smells rather nice. He quickly enters the trailer and closes the door behind him. He looks around and although they’ve all arrived in Albuquerque just 48 hours ago, Alex’s trailer already looks very cozy and lived in.
A set of what must be scented candles is burning, set on a wooden plate on the sideboard in front of the big mirror. Something slow and jazz-y is playing over two small speakers, and Alex, clad in gray sweat pants and a soft looking baby blue hoodie, lounges on the recliner, a beautifully patterned quilt in earthy colors draped over his lower legs.
He’s looking up at Michael, carefully placing a bookmark in the pilot episode script he'd been reading when Michael entered the trailer, before he places it on the table in front of him.
“Michael, good to see you. Can I offer you some tea?”
Michael is not much of a tea drinker, but it’s cold in Albuquerque this time of the year, and if Alex’s already offering to make tea, this could be a much-needed bonding experience. He smiles.
“That would be great, thanks. Can I help?”
His mom Mara has raised him right, he never expects people to just serve him, but Alex is already up and heads over to the small kitchen area. He busies himself with boiling water and placing cookies in a ceramic bowl. He looks over at Michael.
“Sit down and make yourself comfortable. Are you warm enough? I can turn up the heating some more if you’re cold?”
Michael plops down on the comfy chair offered to him and shakes his head.
“Thanks, I’m naturally running hot, I’m good.”
That remark earns him a raised brow from Alex. No kidding, Alex Manes is capable of raising just one brow. It gives his face something almost diabolic for a second, until one corner of his mouth twitches and he smirks.
“You’re running hot, huh? Good to know.”
Michael blushes. He honest to god blushes. Holy shit. Is Alex Manes  flirting with him? He’s not sure. Alex is so different from his group of friends and the people he’s worked with in the past. They are usually just taking the shit out of him (and vice versa). With Alex it's all new and unknown terrain.
He’s being pulled out of his thoughts when Alex returns to the table and puts a mug of steaming tea in front of him. And of course, he doesn’t just place it on the wooden table, he’s putting a  coaster  underneath. Because Alex Manes is a cultivated man who brings his own quilt, scented candles and fucking  coasters  to a 3-week-shoot in the desert.
Michal is impressed, but also intimidated. His usual crowd is loud and rambunctious, and it suits his outgoing personality perfectly. Alex is only three months older than him, but he almost feels like an insecure kid meeting a man of the world. He shakes off that mental image and waits until Alex is snuggled up under his quilt again before he takes a cookie. It’s chocolate chip, and it tastes divine .
“Holy shit, these are amazing. Where did you get them? I have to buy three boxes.”
Alex chuckles.
“I don’t usually do orders, but I can give you the recipe, they’re quite easy to make.”
Michael is in awe. He loves food more than almost anything in the world, and he knows his way around a stove or oven. He’ll figure out a way to make these cookies.
“Didn’t take you for a baker, but you sure know what you did with these. They are incredible. I’d love the recipe. I’ll send it to my mom. She’ll be so excited.”
He must’ve said the right thing, because Alex’s smile turns warm and genuine for the first time since they’ve met.
“Moms, right?”
Michael couldn’t agree more and nods enthusiastically. He picks up his mug.
“To amazing moms.”
Alex picks up his mug and toasts back.
“To amazing moms.”
They both sip some tea and for a moment the music in the background is the only sound in the trailer. Michael is careful to place his mug on its coaster before he picks up the conversation again.
“Okay, now that we’ve established that we’re both momma’s boys, I hope we can take it from there and get to know each other better and maybe build something for our Alistair and Mikel dynamic. What do you think?”
He’s nervous all of a sudden. Alex is an experienced actor, he’s been doing this professionally for more than a decade. When Michael sees Alex’s face soften, he’s feeling better immediately.
“I think that’s a great idea. There’s this one sentence in the script that shows how close they are, or at least how close they must've been at some point, and I think it would be good to find that closeness somehow. And then we’re going to show the execs what a kiss a decade in the making looks like.”
Michael laughs.
“You won’t believe it, but that’s been my thought process on my way from Jenna’s office to your trailer. I mean, Liz and Max still have the biggest responsibility to convince the higher ups, but in my opinion, Alistair and Mikel are just as important and as much of a selling point.”
Encouraged by Alex nodding in agreement, Michael continues.
"The scene you mentioned, is our springboard, that’s the moment where the audience has to realize that this isn’t just a spur of the moment thing. These two men have history. We may not know about that history yet, but it has to be clear that they know each other. It’s really helpful for me that Jenna wrote that bit about muscle memory into the script. The question is, how do we get to a point where we look like we’ve done this before? Is Jenna going to schedule snogging rehearsals for us?”
Alex bursts out laughing. On the one hand Michael’s delighted that he’s managed to make Alex laugh, on the other hand that he’s worried he’s made a stupid suggestion.
“Uhm, sorry if that was dumb. I’m just a very hands-on guy. I often approach my roles from as much of a physical perspective as I do from the emotional perspective of my character.”
Alex smiles at him.
“You didn’t say anything dumb. It’s a fair question to ask. How do we, two people who’ve only just met, play two men who’ve been in love for a decade? I want this to be every bit of convincing and true to these characters as you. In all honesty, I might have an even bigger interest in it, given that I’m part of the community who will watch this part of the show very closely.”
Michael knows that Alex is gay, in his research he’s found articles and an interview that had been released after Charming Young Deceivers ended. Media and fans alike had been in a frenzy over the coming out, especially after Alex had been part of one of the most beloved  straight  couples in TV history.
Michael looks at Alex as open and honest as he feels.
“I’m bi myself, so this story means a lot to me, too. I want to do it justice, and I want to do right by a community I know is marginalized in many, many ways. They -  we -  deserve me giving it my all. And that’s what I want to do.  That’s what the script demands. And I think Alistair and Mikel have the potential to be as important and relevant as Liz and Max’s characters. Maybe even more so.”
Michael’s run out of breath at this point, something that barely ever happens, but this is important to him, and he hopes Alex understands what he means. Going by the look on Alex’s face, he does. His eyes seem to glisten, but maybe it’s just a trick of light.
Alex clears his throat and takes another sip from his mug.
“You know, I’ve had the hardest time making the decision whether to take on this role. After seven years on my previous show and coming out after we wrapped, I took a year off. I just needed a break from pretending to be someone I’m not for way too long. The media just always assumed I had to be straight because I played a straight guy on TV. I knew it was risky to come out when the show ended, it could’ve ended my career as well, but I couldn’t live the lie by omission my life had become any longer. I did a lot of soul searching and focused on myself. I was at a point where I didn’t know if I should continue to work in this business, when the accident happened. After that, I didn't know if I  could continue to work in this business. I’m sure you know enough about the industry to understand how hard it is as an able-bodied, assumed-straight, assumed white male actor.”
Michael nods, he knows all too well how hard it is. He’s been driving Uber and Lyft for more than a year to make ends meet, and as a talented mechanic, he’d also done the odd car repair job for friends or people recommended to him for extra cash, he’d spent on more acting classes.
Alex puts his mug down and rubs at his eyes with the palms of his hands before he looks at Michael again, his gaze intense.
“Well, after playing a straight white guy for years, people now know that Alex Manes is actually a gay man, who’s half Native American, and also disabled. I’ve worked my way up in LA for years, until my name was one casting people and show execs would recognize. Expectations were always high, but the longer  Deceivers  went on, the pressure to replicate the success got bigger every year, and the media wanted to be fed with the same narrative over and over again. Especially in regards to my personal life.”
Alex shakes his head, probably thinking about gossip magazine headlines questioning whether his female co-star of seven years and him were banging in real life. Michael shudders in sympathy.
“When the show ended, I just couldn’t continue and pretend to be the guy they wanted to write about. If someone had asked me one more time what my dream girl would have to be like, I can’t guarantee I wouldn’t have committed a murder. And now they know that I’m really not that guy."
Alex points at the script on the table.
“When I got this, I’d more or less made my peace with the idea of never being able to act again, while simultaneously worrying about what to do with my life instead. This role, this story, came at the right time. I read the script and I knew immediately that I wanted to play Alistair. That – to a degree – I  am  Alistair.”
Alex takes a steadying breath.
“I’m not going to make this about me all the time, don’t worry, but I wanted you to know where I’m coming from, and that there’s the potential that some part of my story will bleed into Alistair’s story. Mentally I’m still a bit ‘all over the place’ right now, I’m more emotional than usual, and I still struggle with the decision of having signed up for a project that could turn into yet another commitment of several years. But I think the show has the potential to be really good. For myself, and for many people like me.”
Michael gets up from his chair and walks over to the recliner. He reaches out to Alex with both arms.
“Man, would it be ok if I offer you a hug? I know I could use a hug right now. It’s ok if you don’t want, of course, but I thought I’d ask?”
Alex looks at him with big eyes, but then he untangles himself from the quilt, gets up and steps into Michael’s open arms. Michael wraps his arms around Alex’s upper body, while Alex’s arms slowly wind around Michael’s mid-section. It’s only awkward for a second, then both men give in and melt into a comforting embrace. They just stand there in the middle of Alex’s trailer for a long time, holding each other, breathing in and out in perfect sync.
They lose track of time, but eventually Alex bends back a little to look at Michael’s face from close up.
“Momma’s boys  and  suckers for hugs, I have a feeling, things between us are going to be just fine.”
Michael snickers.
“I’m warning you, I’m a cuddle slut. I can fall asleep on people’s shoulders, or I will sloth-hug them from behind when I’m tired. Feel free to tell me no at any time though, I know not everybody’s comfortable with that kind of invasion of their personal space.”
Alex smiles.
“Thanks, I’m trying to listen to my needs more closely. In general, I do enjoy a good hug, but sometimes it can be too much. Boundaries are hard.”
Michael nods.
“Don’t I know it. I mean, I’m not having a hard time to accept or notice other people’s boundaries, it’s more like that I often ignore my own boundaries in an effort to please everyone. Leaves me drained and exhausted, but then life demands that I’m being me again, and I never seem to have enough time and space to recharge.”
They end the hug, but when they sit down again, they do so on the recliner side by side, their knees touching. Michael’s right leg bounces.
“So, after we’ve bonded over some emotional stuff, how do we get to the muscle memory part of our characters’ connection? Kissing boot camp? I’ll admit, although I know I’m bi, I’ve never kissed a dude before. I don’t expect it to be that different from kissing a girl, but I can’t be sure. I’ve looked up your filmography and saw that you did this cool musical film where you played a seemingly gay man. How did you and your co-star approach that thing between your characters?”
Alex laughs.
“Did you see the movie?”
Michael shakes his head.
“I didn’t have the time to watch it, but I saw the trailer, and, uhm, there’s a making of clip of one rather steamy scene on YouTube, I watched that.”
Alex smirks at him.
“Did you now? Interesting. Well, in general we talked with the director of course, how they wanted the scene to go, stuff like that. We did a screen test where we kissed before the shoot. Colton’s also gay, so we both had no trouble with the ‘kissing a dude’ part. But as it is with any kiss on screen, kissing a stranger is never easy.”
Michael nods.
“Okay, that makes sense. Maybe they’re going to do a screen test with us, too? To make sure we’re compatible? Jenna didn’t mention anything, right?”
Alex shakes his head.
“No, she didn’t. I don’t think there will be a screen test. This is just a pilot, and they’re on a tight budget. They’ll expect us to knock it out of the park as soon as the cameras roll.”
Michael swallows around a lump in his throat that wasn’t there a minute ago.
“Good, that’s cool. I mean, looking at you, it’s not exactly a hardship to imagine how great it must be to kiss you. I’ll do my best to make it not awkward.”
Alex smiles at him, but the smile doesn't quite reach his eyes. He’s careful with his next words.
“If it makes you feel better, we can do a screen test without cameras? Figure out how to embrace without colliding? I mean, we don’t have to kiss, obviously, if it makes you uncomfortable or you think it’s not necessary. But we could work out some kind of choreography and develop the ‘muscle memory’ for the kissing scene?”
Alex doesn’t look straight at Michael when he makes his proposal, only when he ends, his eyes are back on Michael with full focus. Michael feels like he’s blushing furiously, although he really hopes that isn’t the case.
“Uhm, okay, that’s a great idea actually. A choreography. I like that. I’d rather not knock you unconscious with my thick skull just because we both go for the same side.”
Alex laughs and stands up again. He holds his hand out to Michael.
“Come on then, let’s try.”
Michael takes Alex’s hand and lets himself get pulled up into a standing position. Alex doesn’t release his hand, so Michael follows him to the middle of the trailer where they have enough space to move around without bumping into furniture. Alex takes one more step until they stand opposite from each other.
“Is there anything off limits with what you’re comfortable with? Like, do I have to know about any particularly ticklish spots, is it ok to touch your hair? That kind of stuff.”
Michael thinks about it for a second, then he shakes his head.
“I can’t think of anything. How about you?”
Alex shakes his head.
“I’m pretty ticklish, but I don’t think you’re going to tickle me. Should we just act out the scene like it’s in the script and see how it goes?”
Michael nods. He picks up his script from where he’d placed it on the table earlier and quickly reads through the instructions for the scene’s set-up.
“Okay, why don’t you take the chair from over there, and I enter from the kitchen area?”
Alex nods in agreement. He pulls out the chair from under the desk and props up his right leg on the seat. He pulls up the leg of is sweatpants and pretends to adjust something on his prosthesis.
Michael’s stepped back into the kitchen area and looks at Alex. His hair is tousled and he looks warm and slightly flushed. For a moment, Michael glances at the metal of Alex’s leg reflecting the light, but then he takes a deep breath and closes his eyes. He’s Mikel Rath now. An alien who’s lived in this town for ten years while the love of his life went to war. They are not on good terms, but there’s still love.
A love that’s been tested over and over again, but never went away. Michael opens his eyes and looks at Alex. Alex, who’s Alistair Jessup now, a decorated war veteran. Not the same person Mikel fell in love with a decade ago. Not a boy anymore. Alistair is a man now. But the love, oh the  love, it's burning just as bright as the first day he’d laid eyes on him.
Mikel takes a step forward into the room, as per description “belt buckle first”.
"𝙽𝚘𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚕𝚐𝚒𝚊’𝚜 𝚊 𝚋𝚒𝚝𝚌𝚑, 𝚑𝚞𝚑."
Alistair adjusts the leg of his pants and puts his foot back on the ground. He looks at Mikel, his eyes dark and questioning. He sighs.
"𝙸 𝚝𝚑𝚘𝚞𝚐𝚑𝚝 𝚏𝚘𝚛 𝚜𝚞𝚛𝚎 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚠𝚑𝚎𝚗 𝙸 𝚐𝚘𝚝 𝚋𝚊𝚌𝚔 𝚏𝚛𝚘𝚖 𝙸𝚛𝚊𝚚, 𝚢𝚘𝚞’𝚍 𝚋𝚎 𝚕𝚘𝚗𝚐 𝚐𝚘𝚗𝚎."
Mikel feels embarrassed all of a sudden. Alistair is right, it’s been ten years and he’s still stuck in the same place, wasting his life, just like Alistair said earlier. But then Alistair doesn’t know  why  he never left, what kept him in their hometown, or rather who. Mikel is tired, and his shoulders drop. He sounds resigned.
"𝙸’𝚟𝚎 𝚋𝚎𝚎𝚗 𝚠𝚘𝚛𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚘𝚗 𝚊 𝚠𝚊𝚢 𝚘𝚞𝚝 𝚘𝚏 𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚎 𝚏𝚘𝚛 𝚊 𝚠𝚑𝚒𝚕𝚎. 𝙸𝚝’𝚜 𝚜𝚕𝚘𝚠 𝚐𝚘𝚒𝚗𝚐. 𝚃𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚠𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚠𝚊𝚗𝚝? 𝙵𝚘𝚛 𝚖𝚎 𝚝𝚘 𝚐𝚘?"
Alistair shakes his head, he also looks tired, his eyes are hollow.
"𝚆𝚎’𝚛𝚎 𝚗𝚘𝚝 𝚔𝚒𝚍𝚜 𝚊𝚗𝚢𝚖𝚘𝚛𝚎. 𝚆𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝙸 𝚠𝚊𝚗𝚝 𝚍𝚘𝚎𝚜𝚗’𝚝 𝚖𝚊𝚝𝚝𝚎𝚛."
The ‘what I want never mattered’ is hanging like an unspoken truth between them. Mikel takes a step forward, his eyes on Alistair. Alistair in return, takes one step in Mikel’s direction. They are close now. Very close. They look at each other, their eyes telling an entire story while they remain quiet.
When they both start moving at the same time, there’s no need to figure out a choreography. Mikel’s arms reach for Alistair’s head, his fingers slotting around his neck just so, while Alistair’s hands go underneath Mikel’s arms and wrap around Mikel’s torso. They both pull the other in until there’s no space left between them. Mikel takes another breath before he closes the last inch of distance between them and their lips meet in a searing kiss.
They are swaying back and forth, their lips pressing firmly against each other. They are Alistair and Mikel for a long moment, until Mikel Rath slowly turns back into Michael Guerin and Alistair fades back into Alex Manes, and now it’s them kissing all of a sudden, and no longer the characters they are supposed to play.
Michael doesn’t know how to stop. He doesn’t want to. He’s holding onto Alex’s face and looks at him like he’s searching for something. When he sees what he’s been hoping to find, he closes his eyes and lets his lips go soft, his mouth turning into a pliant invitation
When he feels Alex’s tongue nudging at his lower lip, he opens his mouth and lets him in.

Collin’s Coronavirus Thoughts
Corona Diaries
I know what you are thinking. It is Day 4 of the Quarantine and Social Distancing and Collin has gone so crazy without all the busy-ness of life that he is writing a blog post. And you would be absolutely correct. Like every other millennial twenty-something, I have a lot of really great ideas that haven’t quite come to fruition. By now I thought I would be operating a volleyball facility, or traveling the US in a VW van driving for Uber, or pursuing a PhD program in England while playing volleyball, or coaching a small college team in Southern California.
All this to say I’m a big-time dreamer and a mostly incredibly poor “executer”. I often mistake my busy-ness for full-ness. I have seven unread books on my night stand, I haven’t been grocery shopping in weeks, I never got around to painting the trim in the bathroom my dad and I remodeled, my phone hasn’t been at full charge since November, and there has been an overflow of recycling sitting outside my house from the garbage disposal and mattress I got for Christmas… and now it’s March. Welcome to it, friends.
Let’s start here: I stopped by my parents’ house this week to print something – which I often do because I have a lot of printing needs but haven’t ever purchased a printer. It’s nice because I can print some papers I need AND I can always count on cool ranch Doritos and a Mango Orange Crystal Lite…. that I’ll likely take one sip of, leave on the counter, and finish when I’m there 4 days later.
Anyway, here I am printing in my dad’s office and running late for a meeting  (all because I napped for too long). I rush out the door of the house, accidentally leaving one document on the printer, pens and paper everywhere, and a cupboard desk drawer open. A few minutes later, my dad sends me a picture of his office, which was without a doubt entirely put together five minutes prior to me being there. The tone of his text is sarcastic but loving but semi-annoyed which I can handle. I spend six seconds feeling bad about my reckless and disorganized self until Hillsong’s Highlands comes on the radio and I turn it up. I don’t spend time reflecting on things that would make me sad, I’m a 7.
In the midst of my frantic printing and meeting prep, my dad told me he was going to call me “F-5”as my new nickname. By the look on my face, he could tell I was confused as to why. He begins to tell me that tornados are classified in F-0 through F-5 categories, with an F-5 tornado being the wildest in nature. My quick google search defines an F-5 tornado as the most “violent damage, homes lifted off foundation and carried considerable distances, autos thrown as far as 100 meters.” I think what my dad was trying to say is that my general way of life is to rampage my way through different spaces, groups, situations… often times in an assertive, proactive, somewhat wild, chaotic way and then just… leave (I think this how I drive too). Stop go stop go stop go. I go from this thing right on to the next without pause. I show up, jump out of my car, race to wherever I’m supposed to go, be (mostly) present there until BOOM, it’s a Monday evening and I’m in the Eagle gym, shutting off all the lights, gathering volleyballs, turning on the alarm, leaving for Young Life – all in an attempt to get there three minutes before it starts so I can prep items for the game I’m leading ALLLLL before being interrupted in the parking lot by a mom of a U11 kid who is reminding me (probably for the 3rd time) about the t-shirt they ordered and are waiting on. Following? Me neither.
In short – my life actually is like an F-5 tornado. I run run run from one thing to the next, filling my world to the brim with as much as I possibly can all until I arrive back at my house at 10:30 pm, gas light on, eat whatever I can find in the fridge before my head hits the pillow 4 minutes later, only to set my alarm and do it again.
I’ve been living my life like this for a really long time until…. well until Sunday when we got the news that school is cancelled, which means volleyball activities are all cancelled too, and Young Life gatherings paused and suddenly my wild Monday is WIDE OPEN.
This blog post / journal / diary is my attempt to articulate from my squirrel brain some things I’ve learned about myself in the last 48 hours since this craziness called coronavirus officially stopped my (and probably your) collective world right in their F-5 tornado tracks.
First, let me tell you about my day today paint a picture of how my world feels just a bit (LITERALLY ENTIRELY) different…..
 1)    I didn’t set an alarm and I woke up at 8:30 am.
2)    Shortly after, I went on a quick walk to the nearest coffee shop and ordered a Misto: I am on my journey to black coffee and I just graduated from a latte to this half coffee half milk concoction (with caramel) and I feel accomplished.
3)    I stopped by my neighbor friend’s house to say hello.
4)    I got home, cleaned a couple things around the house, washed a couple plates in my sink, and went on a bike ride to downtown Boise where I enjoyed a takeout lunch from Whole Foods. I would like to tell you that I rode my bike home, but a friend happened to see me and my girlfriend (she is working remotely from Utah and visiting right now) saw us and somehow realized the journey completely uphill from downtown to my house on the bench might not be all that fun so we piled our bikes in her car and she took us home.
5)    I took a 20 minute snoozer.
6)    I got up and did some yard work outside, gathering pine needles from underneath my big backyard tree and finally broke down those big boxes that have been sitting outside my house for months and was able to fit them all inside my recycling can.
7)    It started to drizzle so I came inside, crawled under a big blanket and read the first couple chapters of Prodigal God by Timothy Keller.
8)    Kinslie and I then stopped by the store to pick up some things for dinner and I grilled some steaks and shared a giant salad and some grilled asparagus.
9)    After a few girl scout cookies (they stopped by yesterday), we watched the last half of Ellen’s Game of Games and picked a movie on Netflix.
10) Now I’m lying in my (perfectly made) bed (because I had the time to make it) writing all my thoughts down in a word document wondering if I’ll actually post this or if there is really anything of worth that I’m typing. I think there is but not sure yet.
Well, friends of the interwebs, you might be wondering why you just read a detailed list of my day from start to finish. Here’s what I want you to know.
 1)    Upon arriving at the coffee shop, I had a cheerful silly conversation with the barista about what drink I should order as we laughed about me wanting to eventually enjoy drip coffee. We engaged in authentic dialogue for a few minutes and on the way out I thanked her for the drink recommendation.
2)    Before leaving for our bike ride, my tires were flat so we walked them to the gas station and filled up with six quarters before we went on our merry way. I empathized with the Chevron employee as we talked about coronavirus and how it might impact our lives. I wished him well and went on my way.
3)    While bikeriding downtown I noticed there are five…. FIVE… different types of massage or spa places between my house and Curtis, which is the next main stop light.
4)    At Whole Foods, I asked the clerk their favorite pasta salad as she walked over and told me all about the 2 for $6 deal. I noticed the different textures of the floor and the neatly stacked chairs and how the vegetables were perfectly arranged in their place.
5)    While doing yardwork, I stopped and looked at Kinslie as she was raking leaves into a pile. I went over and looked, I mean REALLY LOOKED into her eyes and noticed how the Irish green edges melt into a light sky-ish blue before meeting her pupil. I noticed the way she parted her wavy blonde hair and the way it fell just barely over the sweatshirt she was borrowing of mine.  I noticed how thankful I was I had someone to share this day with and even more thankful for her idea to do this yardwork that surely wouldn’t have been started for maybe forever.
6)    While reading, I noticed the way the soft sunshine pressed through my semi-open blinds onto my page and made the black ink pop off the page. I contemplated Keller’s words of Pharisees and tax collectors and a story of two sons on their journey of deeper understanding of God’s steadfast love and grace in the midst of their own struggles.
7)    While making dinner I couldn’t help but take just a little extra time to delicately cut each cucumber and carrot slice with care as I heard sounds of clattering branches from my cracked window as dusk began to settle in.
8)    And while writing this blog post, I can’t help but notice all the things I noticed in my own world for perhaps the first time.
While I can’t be sure what life will look like in a few short days, weeks, or even months, and while I’m not positive what my income will be, and what daily routines or rituals will be impacted, or how our schools and communities will be changed – I can be sure of this: I hope in the midst of my crazy F-5 tornado life that surely will be back in busy routine before I know it – I hope for a couple things.
I hope I can continue notice the little things. To notice the wildly interconnected, perfectly-timed, awe strikingly beautiful, crazy detailed, little details of this world like the way I noticed the lines on the fresh steaks as I pulled them off my garage sale grill.
I hope to breathe deep and see, I mean REALLY see the world around me, to engage in relationship in more authentic and honest ways, to stop for a moment wherever I am to truly connect with the people around me.
I hope to take my time through a home cooked meal, and to not be so filled with anxiousness and fear of the future and unknown that I my eyes are blinded to see the way God is working in and through my (and our) world, possibly even through something like the freaking COVID-19.
While I’m sure there will be more lessons to be learned in the next little while, I challenge you to take a couple moments to really press in and reflect upon the way this Zombie apocalyptic ish tirade is impacting your world. I truly hope in the midst of empty toilet paper shelves and hand sanitizer hoarders there is something beautiful in your world that you’ve noticed, too.

Tiny Tony Overlord Part 2
Part I | Read on AO3
Betaed by the amazing @folklejend. All remaining mistakes are my own. Enjoy! :)
Chapter 2: Recap
.Helicarrier.
“Everybody shut up!” Nick Fury yells and finally, for the first time in twelve long, frustrating hours, blessed silence reigns in SHIELD’s headquarters.
With a deep sigh, Fury closes his eye, opens it again, and lets his gaze wander over the assembled people, all of whom belong to the best of the best SHIELD has to offer.
At 4:12 am, his entire organisation is on the brink of total mayhem, all because of one man. Or rather the disappearance of one man. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that said man is Anthony Stark.
“We’ve got a room filled with some the best hackers, analysts, profilers, tacticians and spies in the world,” Fury says after a long moment, just barely restraining himself to keep from screaming. “Now can someone, anyone, explain to me how we’ve lost Iron Man in the middle of New York City with no ideas as to where he is or who might’ve taken him? Anyone?”
This time, the silence is a lot less blessed and a lot more tense.
[continue under the cut]
Fury rubs his temples. “Alright then. Hill! What do we know about the attack?”
Maria Hill straightens in her seat. “Oliver McWalker, age twenty seven, studied micro-biology until he dropped out of college after he was accused of regular misuse of the equipment and several cases of theft. No suspicious activity after that, no arrests, nothing that pinged our radar.” Hill clicks her tongue, obviously displeased by that oversight.
“Yesterday at 2:39 pm, McWalker set off a couple of small explosive devices in a park.” Hill presses a couple of keys on her keyboard and the screen to her left flares to life, depicting the surveillance footage from the park in question. “The authorities were first alerted at 2:42. A domestic terrorism special unit was supposed to handle it, with the support of the local police force. McWalker proceeded to use a device similar to a flamethrower that appears to contain a violet, highly flammable substance, as well as several other weapons the officers on the scene assumed to be magical. Our lab is still working to identify them all. The Avengers’ assistance was requested at 2:54. Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Iron Man were sent in and arrived at 3:01.”
Hill pauses for a moment to take a gulp of the huge cup of coffee in her hand. An unsubtle reminder that even Fury’s always impeccably dressed and composed assistant is running on less than four hours of sleep.
“Captain America engaged McWalker with Black Widow as back-up whilst Hawkeye and Iron Man helped with the evacuation. Now this,” Hill points at the screen, where the images flicker and turn black almost simultaneously, “is where things get spotty. It appears that before being subdued by Captain America, McWalker managed to set off an explosion of sort that disabled any working technology within two miles of the blast. According to Hawkeye, Stark was forced to leave his suit, which we have been unable to recover. Hawkeye then lost sight of Stark when a group of armed men in black combat uniforms attacked them. Black Widow and Captain America never saw Stark thorough the entire battle.”
Another screen flares to life, this one displaying a map of the location of the attack.
“This,” Hill points at a side street near the park’s back-entrance, “is Stark’s last known location. In his direct vicinity, one grocery story, two cafés and a house have been damaged by the fight.”
“So we know he’s been there,” Fury muses. “The rest of the team?”
“Captain America and Black Widow didn’t leave the park until near the end of the fight. Hawkeye appears to have started out on the other side of the road and then moved towards the main street.”
Three dots appear on the map. The fourth one remains a single question mark.
Fury frowns at the screen. “Was Stark intentionally separated from the others?”
“It’s possible.” Hill tilts her head in consideration. “But we don’t have the necessary data to confirm it.”
“Was the electrical wipe-out intentionally used to make Iron Man vulnerable?”
“It’s possible, but we don’t have the necessary data to confirm it.”
“Was Stark taken or killed?”
“It’s possible.” Hill pauses.
“But we don’t have the necessary data to confirm it?”
“You’re a quick learner, sir.”
Fury glowers at his cheeky assistant. “In short, we don’t know if Stark was the intended target, we don’t know if McWalker was working alone or if this was a coordinated attack, we don’t know what weapons he used, we don’t know where Stark is or whether or not he’s alive, we don’t know what happened to his armour, we don’t know who the enemy forces were working for, and we don’t know about anything that happened within a two-mile radius from that damn park.”
“That about sums it up, sir.” Hill takes another gulp of her coffee.
“What about the bodies?” Fury stares at the headshots of the men that didn’t live to tell the tale after facing of against the combined force of three of SHIELD’s most dangerous agents.
“None of them appear in any of our databases,” Hill denies with a shake of her head.
“So another dead end then.”
Hill sends him a half-hearted smirk. “I’m afraid so, sir. Our techs are tracking McWalker’s movements to figure out how he got a hold of the components of these weapons, but so far they haven’t made much progress. Our only lead is the three surviving, unidentified men we have in our custody. They are likely to wake up sometime in the next 48 hours.”
“Mother fucking Stark and his god damn drama!” Fury pinches the bridge of his nose in frustration. “Alright, Wesley, get me Romanov on the line. Last thing I need is for the Avengers to go and make this mess even worse. Hill, take care of our wannabe villains. Nobody sees them, nobody talks to them, nobody who isn’t already in this room even knows they exist. Got it? The rest of you, get out of my sight, catch some sleep, and if you aren’t back at eight o’ sharp, you will live to regret it!”
“But sir!” a newbie protests. “That’s in less than four hours!”
Luckily for everyone involved, another techie manages to drag him out of the room before Fury gets the chance to make an example. Under the man’s baleful, slightly deranged glare, the room is cleared in record time.

.Zach’s B&B.
Tony stares down at the newspapers titled “PURPLE WIZARD ATTACKS NEW YORK” in bold, black letters. He doesn’t know what the most confusing part is: That an official publication uses the word ‘wizard’ seriously, that the date appears to be 02/09/14 or that none of this seems as weird to him as it should be. The picture on the front page shows Captain America in mid-strike and just looking at it makes Tony’s head hurt even more.
It has to be a fake because Captain America went down in WWII, everyone knows that. His father has been searching for the body forever. At the same time though, it looks completely accurate to Tony, even provokes a fond ‘Always has to solve a problem with his fist. Some things just never change,’ somewhere in the back of his mind. Conflicting facts and memories are warring in his head, things he knows to be true and things that can’t be false contradicting each other, pulling him into opposing directions.
For one thing, Tony is ten. He knows he is. Yet his body feels smaller than it should be, imbalanced and just plain off. It’s also 2014, which should freak him out but doesn’t. The technology around him, the fashion, the events, it is all wrong and so awfully familiar at the same time.
Perhaps the oddest part is that Tony isn’t panicking. He isn’t afraid. He isn’t feeling anything at all. It’s like his mind is processing the facts around him, contradicting as they are, but the link to his emotional side is—broken. Cut off. In some way that is perhaps a good thing. It allows Tony to acknowledge with a calm certainty he can’t logically explain that he is misplaced but not out of place. In his time but not.
What is maybe the most frustrating though, is that Tony knows he is aware of the answers to every question his current situation raises, he just can’t seem to access them. They’re right there, lodged in his mind somewhere, yet beyond his reach. And he can’t even seem to feel afraid because of that.
“Fuck.” Tony drops his head into his bandaged hands with a moan. He hates not understanding anything. Especially when it directly involves him.
Unscrewing the cap of the bottle of pain medication Goggle-Guy has produced from who knows where, Tony almost dry-swallows two pills out of habit before he remembers one is more than enough for his current size and weight. He’s not sure what possibility should worry him more, that his body might have been shrunken or that his mind might have been replaced in his younger self. Yet, for some inane, inexplicable reason, he isn’t worried over either of them.
On that note, Tony turns his head towards the darkest corner their cheap but homey motel room has to offer, from where his masked stalker watches him. It’s disconcerting how quickly Tony has gotten used to that sensation. To all of it, really. Even having a man die in front of him doesn’t seem that terrible anymore, now that the shock has faded and Tony has gotten a few hours of sleep.
Jesus, he really makes for a fucked up kid, doesn’t he? Maybe his parents should have sent him to a psychiatrist after all.
Of course, if there had been one thing Howard hadn’t tolerated near his heir, it had been doctors. He’d seen too much of the damage they were capable of, or so Jarvis always says. Complimentary memories of experimentations, trial runs and the mortality rate of the subjects flash in front of Tony’s eyes. They aren’t relevant now though, so he pushes them aside.
“Alright,” Tony addresses his murderous companion, “Care to explain why you and your friends tried to kill me? And why you killed them instead? Is there a bounty on my head? Because that would be cool!”
“No,” the word is muffled by the face mask.
“Oh.” Tony deflates. “What about a name then?”
“The Asset has no name.”
Cue the creepy, robotic voice again.
“Technically I suppose ‘Asset’ could count as a name,” Tony disagrees on principle. Then promptly wrinkles his nose. “Not an acceptable name of course, you’ve got me there. And really, talking about yourself in third person? That’s some wacky disassociation shit you’ve going on there, sweetums.”
So maybe Tony is a bit more comfortable with this complete stranger than he should be.
“Can you at least lose the mask and goggles? Honestly, I can’t believe nobody has called the cops on us yet!” Tony doesn’t remember much of how they’ve gotten to this little bed and breakfast, or how they got a room for that matter, but walking around with a muzzle isn’t what he’d call inconspicuous.
Goggle-Guy doesn’t bother with a verbal answer, simply lifts one hand and pulls first the goggles and then the mask off. Tony blinks at the uncharacteristic—and how would he know that?—compliance.
“Holy shit, you’re hot,” is probably not the appropriate reaction, certainly not from a ten year old kid, but Tony will later maintain that it’s still true. Clear, blue eyes, wild hair, a sharp jawline that could do with a shave. All of which is oddly familiar. In more ways than one.
I know you.
“Okay. Right.” Tony clears his throat, tries to shake off the unsettling feeling of having forgotten something important. Something essential.
He needs more intel.
“Can you get me a phone?” Tony blurts out, half wondering whom he’s supposed to call, the other half clearly remembering the tiny devices with a connection to a world wide web filled with information, if only one knows how to use it.
“Acknowledged,” Dead-Eyes—because that’s what they are, as pretty as they look—responds, thankfully distracting Tony from the mess inside his head for the moment.
He’s gone before Tony has the chance to say anything else.
Weird guy. Ignoring the strain on his aching shoulder, Tony folds his arms on the table and rests his burning forehead on top of them. I missed him.
He wishes those painkillers would kick in already.
* * * * *
Tony doesn’t realise he has nodded off until he opens his eyes to find his cheek pressed against the smooth wood of the table. There is a rectangular plastic case lying next to his right elbow, the only sign of Dead-Eyes’ return. Tony turns around but he needn’t have bothered. As expected, a blank-faced Dead-Eyes has once again resumed his position in the strategically most advantageous corner of the room.
“Thanks for this,” Tony rasps, awkwardly waves the phone around. Then, because his brain is gearing up again and he finally notices the bright pink phone case with the colourful flowers and emoji stickers all over it, “Do I even want to know where you got this from?”
Dead-Eyes doesn’t twitch, much less answer in any other way.
“Why did you get it though?” Tony can’t help but ramble. “Hours ago you pointed a gun at my face, and don’t get me wrong, I think we’ve come a long way. I’m just not sure where the change of heart stems from.”
If possible, Dead-Eyes stands even straighter. “Disobedience is punished,” he states without inflection.
“O-kay,” Tony drawls. “But why obey me?”
“The Asset obeys the handler’s commands,” Dead-Eyes answers mechanically. “Disobedience is punished.”
Tony blinks. “I know you’ve answered the question, but that doesn’t really explain anything, you know that, right?”
He receives no response.
After a long moment, Tony decides this is all he’s going to get from his cooperating, yet strangely uncooperative assistant for now and busies himself with googling his own name instead. Which admittedly yields more results than Tony has expected.
“DEAD OR ALIVE: TONY STARK MISSING,” “The Fate of Iron Man: Defeat or Disappearance?” and “Who Will Save Our Hero?” are among the first headlines to pop up, all of them less than a couple of hours old.
To Tony’s disappointment, they don’t have any new information on the attack he’s found himself in the middle of. There aren’t even any mentions of the men in the black combat gear. Everyone seems focused on that Purple Wizard who apparently initiated the fight. Even the fifteen hurt civilians haven’t earned more than a side note so far.
There are quite a few pictures of the Iron Man suit and Tony Stark though. Well, the forty-something version of Tony Stark at least.
Tony frowns.
So another wannabe villain has attacked the city. That still doesn’t explain why he’s woken up in the middle of a battlefield, without his armour, in a body that appears to be around ten years old. Now that he isn’t so busy staying alive, just looking at his tiny hands is freaking him out a little.
He remembers the odd, purple light balls that had been shot around and the way the air around him crackled when he first came to. Is it possible, Tony wonders, that one of those light balls had hit him and reduced his body to that of a child? But for what purpose? And could something like this even be done? Considering what he’s seen magic do and the fact that his body is a whole lot tinier than it’s supposed to be, he admits with a disgruntled grimace that the conclusion isn’t that unlikely.
Tony hisses when a sharp spike of pain disrupts his thoughts for a moment. Perhaps he is more injured than he has assumed because his headache doesn’t appear to abate and so far, the painkillers have proven to be entirely useless. Or could this be a side-effect of the violet energy?
What has that stuff even done exactly? Has his body been shrunken? Has his younger body been ripped from his time and immersed into this day? But then what has happened with his grown one? And why does his mental state not fit the age of his physical self? The possibilities are endless, and frankly, they don’t ease the building ache behind his temples at all.
Tony curses. This is why he hates magic.
As much as he doesn’t like any of this though, for now, the “how” isn’t all that important. What matters is that it has happened and he is currently in the body of a child, in a cheap motel room with only a hitman for company. He really needs to come up with a plan. Preferably one that involves him as a grown-up again.
To achieve that, Tony is going to need help. The magic sort of help. Unfortunately, the people who have that sort of expertise aren’t just few and far in between; they also aren’t known for being easy to track down. In fact, there is only one whose location is both publicly-known and easily accessible to Tony in his current state.
“Prepare yourself, buddy,” Tony calls out softly and averts his eyes from the screen which is lit so brightly it hurts his eyes. “We’re going to pay the Avengers a little visit.”

.Secret Research Facility.
“What the fuck do you mean you’ve lost the Soldier?!” the commander’s flabbergasted cry sounds from his office, causing all recruits in hearing distance to exchange wary glances.
A moment later, the door his thrown open.
“Rosewell!” The commander yells, incensed.
“Sir?” A rapidly-paling recruit jumps up from his workstation.
“Activate the Soldier’s tracker!”
“Sir, yes, sir!” Rosewell stutters, causing the commander to roll his eyes.
“Useless, the lot of you,” he snarls, spittle flying everywhere, and lifts his phone to his lips again. “And you, White, better be back with the Soldier and Stark’s body in six hours or the state isn’t gonna waste money on your retirement!”
With that, the commander slams his phone onto the table hard enough to cause the screen to crack. Then he suddenly stills and turns back with an unholy gleam in his eyes. “Who in here was responsible for the Soldier’s activation phrase?”
A moment of silence passes before a college-aged kid clears their throat. “I-I believe that was Agent White’s job, sir.”
“Knew I should’ve drowned that whelp when I had the chance,” the commander spits and palms his gun with a hateful expression. “Bloody Star Wars fans.”
Sooooo... What do you think?

48 - The Longest, Hottest Day
It was a hot day as I made my way home from school. It was the kind of heat that just soaked right through you. The sun leered over the town like a kid with a magnifying glass and we were the ants. There was no escaping that awful heat and after so much time had past since we had even seen rain, there was no knowing when we would be free. At the time, I was unaware of the consequences that came along with it—only that I could no longer play outside with my friends, but I would soon learn just how much desperate times could change people.
As I made why way down the road to my family’s farm, I could hear a familiar twang of a guitar. I raised my hand to my forehead to shade my eyes and could see Old Mister Morgan sitting in his usual spot on his porch. He was there every day with that guitar of his as though the heat didn’t even touch him. My friends and I would always come by to listen to him play ever since we were young. His music sounded so much more beautiful than anything I had heard on the radio. I could never understand why my Mother never liked him. He smiled and waved at me as I passed his house, but I unfortunately could not stop to listen. I had only been walking for nearly 10 minutes, but I was already starting to get dizzy and would need to get home soon to rest.
When I arrived at home, I could hear the muffled cries of my Father coming from the kitchen. I was beginning to hear that sound a lot more often lately, but it was still something that I could never get used to. I crept passed the kitchen door on the way to the living room—hoping to sneak by unseen—and caught a quick glimpse of my Father slumped over the kitchen table with my Mother standing behind him with her hands on his shoulders. It seemed so unnatural to see my parents in such a light. It was as though it was something forbidden that I was never meant to see.
I laid across the living room rug reading my comic—the same comic that I had read dozens of times before—and waited to be called for dinner. Eventually the crying stopped and the house was quiet. I was no longer reading the words on the faded pages of my comic. I was just laying there listening and staring blankly at the once-colourful pages. There was a sound of a chair squeak and then came footsteps. I could feel my Father standing behind me, but it was awhile before he finally spoke:
“We’re gonna have to sell the farm.”
I turned to look at him. His face was tense and serious. Any tears that had been on his face had evaporated completely and leaving behind only the cold stone underneath. I couldn’t find any words to say to him, but my mind was running like a race horse. We couldn’t leave the farm; I was born in this house. My Father said that it would all be mine someday. We couldn’t go anywhere else—we didn’t belong anywhere else. This was our home. I still couldn’t speak. My lip was starting to tremble, but I tried my best to hold it back. My Father turned and walked back into the kitchen.
“It’s oatmeal again for dinner. It’ll be ready in a few minutes,” he added before disappearing through the kitchen door.
As we all sat down at the table for dinner, I realized that I had completely lost my appetite. Even without the uncertainty of the future ahead, I wasn’t sure that I could stomach any more oatmeal. We had had it every day that week so far and I was never really keen on it to begin with. As I pushed around the beige mush with my spoon, I tried to remember the last time that we had eaten real food. Though I would never admit it to anyone, I was even starting to miss vegetables.
My parents were talking about a town meeting that would be happening that evening after the sun went down. I hated going to those meetings—they were always so dry and seemed to go on forever. I wished that they could just leave me at home, but with all the robberies that had been going on lately, I didn’t even bother asking. Maybe one day I could end up like Old Mister Morgan. He never went to any of those silly meetings. He just played his guitar all day without a care in the world. I would like to live like that. I wondered: maybe I should learn to play myself.
It didn’t end up being another typical town meeting. Everyone was tense and there was a lot of shouting. It turned out that it wasn’t just our farm that was in danger, it was everyone’s. Crops everywhere were dying—if not dead already—and entire fields were being reduced to dust. People were starving. There were talks of sharing resources, but nobody could feed themselves let alone their neighbour. There just didn’t seem to be a right answer. It was becoming a worry that the whole town would have to be abandoned entirely.
“God is punishing us,” someone yelled from the back of the room.
Usually, such an idea would be laughed off immediately, but instead the room got deathly silent for the first time that evening. I scanned the faces of all the adults in the room and they all seemed to have this look on their faces as though they had an awful pain in their stomachs. Somewhere in the room, I could hear someone crying. God wasn’t really punishing us, was He? Slowly, the voices began to pick up again. Nobody seemed to question the idea, but it was still hard for many to accept. I looked up at the ceiling and felt my lip begin to tremble once more. What would become of us?
“But why?” someone asked.
“Clearly, we’ve all lost faith,” replied another.
“Not me! I got to church every Sunday.”
“That’s not enough—you need to prove your faith.”
“How would we do that?”
“How can we get Him to spare us?”
The room murmured. What would it take to end this curse? Of course there was prayer, but most of knew already to pray each day. It seemed as though it was going take much more than that, but what? Then, almost in a whisper, and yet the words echoed through the whole town, someone spoke one terrible word:
“Sacrifice.”
Once more, the room was all a clamour. How could someone consider something so barbaric? Surely, there was another way. I looked up at my parents and neither of them said a word. They did not look at me, but instead shared a glance between each other. I pulled my Father’s sleeve and asked if they were really going to kill someone, but he did not answer or looked away from my Mother’s eyes for even a second. Then, I heard someone in the noise ask the room who would be willing to volunteer themselves and the room got silent. My Mother closed her eyes and bowed her head. I felt my Father grab ahold of me and he placed both of his hands over my ears. Through the muffled sound of my Father’s heartbeat, I could hear my Mother:
“Mad Morgan.”
What? No, not him.
I began to struggle. I tried to pulled my Father’s hands from my ears, but he was so strong. I dug my fingernails into his hands and pulled them through the flesh. Finally he let go in a wince of pain. I could now hear the other voices in the room and there was not one person that even attempted to save his life.
“Of course, what has he ever done for this town?”
“He didn’t even come tonight—clearly he doesn’t care about any but himself.”
“All his does if play that lousy guitar all day.”
“He can’t do anything else—the man don’t got a brain!”
“What a burden.”
“Would anyone even miss him?”
“Not me.”
I tried to scream—maybe I could still convince them—but my Father was holding me back. I fought and I clawed, but this time he wasn’t letting go. He stood up and pulled me up along with him. As he led me out of the room, I looked back at my Mother: her face was buried within her hands.
My Father took me home and put me right to bed. I fought until I could fight no longer, then I could only cry. I laid awake that night thinking only of Old Mister Morgan. If only there was some way that I could warn him, but there was nothing—I was just a child. It was that day that I truly learned what it meant to be powerless. I could lay there and wait for the bloodthirsty horde to claim their prize. I did not pray that night. How could I?
Then, in the middle of the night, I heard them. Even from all the way down the road, I could hear the sound of the approaching mob. I sat up and hugged my knees tightly. I could not make out any particular voices, only the collective shouting. It was almost as though they didn’t sound human at all, but instead they had transformed into a pack of ravenous wolves. The noise got louder and louder until it was suddenly silenced. It became too quiet. I could not hear my heartbeat—the sound of my breath—and even the house refused to creak. I didn’t think that I would be able to sleep that night, but eventually everything faded to darkness and I dreamt of a beautiful sound. Maybe it was because the real world was just too much to bear.
I awoke to the sound of rain hitting my bedroom window. The crops were able to grow back and we never did end up selling the farm. Eventually I was able convince myself that it never happened; otherwise I never would have never have been able to live with myself or the people around me. That house at the end of the road had always been empty. I grew up and took over the farm once my Father had passed on. I grew up and even had a son of my own. Everything in my life had perfectly fallen into place, but one day my Son told me that wanted to take up an instrument—he was thinking of learning the guitar. For reasons that I could not understand, I broke down and started to cry.

How to make DIY string light planters {for heavy lights!}
Hello my friends! I've been excited to share this project with you! Installing these outdoor lights have been on my list since we moved in nearly three years ago.
We had outdoor cafe lights hanging from the pergola at the old house:
And then later had them hung from the trees over the back patio:
This post may contain affiliate links for your convenience.
See my policies and disclosure page for more information.
We love these outdoor string lights in particular. They are sturdy, commercial-grade strands that hold up to everything. We kept them up in rain, wind and snow and they still look/work great today.
It helped that we had trees big enough to hold the weight of these -- they are heavier than your average outdoor lights, but again...they last forever.
Knowing we were going to hang them over the new patio, I grabbed a couple boxes of the lights last year. I was really hoping to get them up last fall, but it didn't happen:
Because we don't have trees around the patio yet (and it would be years before they'd be strong enough to hold the light strands), we had to figure out a different option.
I've been researching this for a year because it was so important for this to a.) be functional, b.) look good and c.) not cost a fortune. I gathered info from a bunch of tutorials I found and then we had to make some more changes at the end I'll share with you. (Hint: the tutorials we found didn't work for the heavier lights!)
Let's get started! I'll list ALL of the items you'll need at the end of the post, but here are the step by step instructions.
Step 1: Gather the planters you'd like to use.
Some of the tutorials I found used wood wine barrel planters -- but the ones I found either had large holes already drilled into the bottom or they weren't super sturdy. I was worried the concrete would ooze out between the slats of wood.
I bought three plastic planters for this project awhile back, but I decided they were too tall and not wide -- you want something that has a wide base.  We returned those and got these plastic barrel planters instead:
They still have that wine barrel look but should hold up much better!
I initially had three planters, but we ended up using two when we figured out how many feet of lights we had.
Step 2: Secure the poles in the planters.
Next, we grabbed eight foot 4x4's for each planter. The quick set cement set really fast -- but this next step was helpful. I installed "L" brackets onto the bottom of each 4x4 and then screwed them into the bottom of the planters before adding the cement:
This will not keep them super secure (at least with plastic planters), so you can't let go just yet -- but they do help!
I've never use cement but it was surprisingly easy! We used two 50 pound bags of Quikrete for each planter:
We added and mixed one bag at a time -- you add the cement and then spray water. You don't need a ton of water -- just mix as well as possible so there's no dry cement left:
For the first planter it took three of us because I was worried the 4x4 wouldn't hold at first. But the cement sets up so fast, it just took two of us for the second one.
Use a level to check the 4x4 during this process. It doesn't have to be perfectly straight -- remember you can adjust the mulch or dirt under the planters to help make the poles straight.
Within 15-20 minutes it wasn't budging:
You can stain or paint the 4x4's before setting them in the cement, but I'm too impatient for that. I wanted to get them up! It was easy to get them stained after the fact:
Step three: Secure the planters into the ground (if needed).
Soooo this part went really well and was way easier than we thought it would be. That is, until we started pulling on the 4x4s a bit...and we realized there was no way these wouldn't tip over from the weight of the lights. (Even with 100 pounds of cement!)
The lights aren't CRAZY heavy...but we were draping them across the patio, so the distance adds some tension. We had our handyman come out to take a look (he was helping me hang the lights anyway) and he came up with a brilliant solution.
He found long metal steel flats at the hardware store that he pounded into the ground and then secured into the cement portion of the pots:
You'll need a stone/cement drill bit to get into the set cement. You can also do this while the cement is drying with a regular drill bit.
He attached four to each planter and it worked like a charm!! Brilliant. They don't budge. I'm surprised the planters in the tutorials I found stay upright -- but as I mentioned, if you are placing them closer together or using lightweight light strands, they will probably work. (Our lights are strung 20+ feet over the patio.)
Because I was filling the remaining part of each planter with soil and plants, I drilled a few holes into the sides of the planters so water doesn't pool up inside:
I found a flat of these succulents at Lowe's -- it was SO easy to plant! You can either just lay them down over the dirt or tear them into pieces like I did:
Hopefully they do well out there! One flat was $21 and I had plenty for the two planters. In the spring I'll add petunias that will spill over the sides.
Step four: Hang the lights with hardware.
Next it was time to get the lights hung! I bought this light hanging kit last year and it had everything we needed:
We had plenty of hardware and wire leftover. If you are draping the lights less than seven feet, you can just hang them by themselves. The brand recommends that you use wire for distances longer than that.
The kit comes with 150 feet of wire, which was way more than we needed. The outdoor lights we use are from Feit and are 48 feet each. So you'll just have to map out the design you want based on your space and how long your lights are. I knew where we wanted to start (the corner of the patio so we could access a plug), and I placed the planters (before we added cement) where we wanted them to drape:
It's hard to determine exactly how much you'll use, so we knew the placement of the last attachment to the back of the house would depend on how much of the lights were left, if that makes sense. We thought it would reach to the corner of the house, but instead we had to move it in a bit. This made it so we didn't have any excess lights/cord hanging down.
It is SO beautiful and even better than I imagined!:
We hung the wire and then used small zip ties to attach the lights. You can string the wire through the holes in the lights beforehand, but the zip ties after was easier. This way you can secure the wire first and then add the lights after the fact.
I always lean to a simpler look so I didn't want this to get too busy. We could have added more planters and lights and had them go back and forth many times...but I prefer this! If you want more, go for it!:
I shared all about these awesome industrial cafe lights here -- in the few years since that post, they now make them in LED instead. This will save on electricity -- each bulb is only one watt.
The old sets came with a ton of extra bulbs because they were glass. These are plastic so they only provide a few extra (also because they'll last MUCH longer than the incandescent version). The LED version is also lighter (weight wise) than the ones we used years ago.
I don't always love LED lights, especially outside. I prefer a warmer light, but as you can see, these aren't stark at all. Very warm and welcoming:
Make sure you tighten the bulbs well -- if they aren't working that's usually the problem. We were going to have a switch run down the porch column so we could easily turn these off and on, but our handyman reminded me that a remote switch would work just as well. We saved SO much money using that instead of having electrical work done. This is the remote we used -- just plug it into the outlet, then plug the lights into the device. You can turn the lights on and off from inside or outside easily. Here's a look at the lights when it's completely dark:
Do you have pretty lights hung outside? They make everything feel a little more magical. :)

birthdate: may 6th, 1992 clubs/teams: film appreciation club job/occupation: -
what made you choose your (muse’s) major?:
- It was hardly a surprise that Baekhyun, at sixteen, when the next semester rolled around and he was barely passing most of his courses - he’d skipped class for his parties, left his homework undone and was a mess in general; gone was the happy, smiling Baekhyun, the same one everyone had come to know and adore. The rest of the year quickly flew by in much the same fashion, and despite already having been cornered by a desperate, fuming mother, he paid her no heed and kept up his habits: coming home late, possibly already hammered as he stumbled through the door, hair and clothes reeking of smoke - and then he’d wake up the next day just to repeat the process over again. One thing he did find, though, was his growing interest in music, especially when it came to his voice; he’d found out one day when he’d auditioned for his school musical and got the lead role- much to the judges and his own surprise.
That might have been a significant stepping stone in his life; maybe an attempt to do something useful with his empty days spent at school, but aside from practices and rehearsals he didn’t care much for anything else, only getting drunk, getting high, and having sex in any random corner he happened to be; whether it be a quick blowjob by the corner store or messy intercourse in the car– he’d be there. Past the knowledge of his friends, though, Baekhyun had taken another set of vocal lessons on the side, ones he would drop by after school and it was undeniable the pounding adrenaline in his system whenever he opened his mouth was so much more than just nerves. He trained hard, finished their musical with flying colours, but when senior year came around and he was still floating along the bottom ranks of the class, his mother saw no other solution than to send him off to where she hoped he’d find change - she’d given up on trying to control him, anyway - and with the last bit of her money enrolled him into Korea’s best – Sogeum University.
Baekhyun himself was eager for a fresh start anyway, and he saw this the perfect opportunity; he could do what he loved under their prestigious programs, away from the rest of the world and in a place where he knew he was amongst his own. Furthermore, that didn’t stop his promiscuous nor his obnoxious ways, and the male quickly landed himself reputation as the campus slut; people asked for “favours” left and right and he just took them as they came. He was good at what he did, he knew; after all what little dignity he had was long gone and this way, with a little bit of learned manipulation, he could get whatever he needed with the simple exchange of sex. Some turned out too rough, some too inexperienced and who didn’t have the guts to return the favour, but at the end of the day it all boiled down to the same thing: he was pleasuring others and it gave him release at the same time, as long as they didn’t get caught. To this day some love him and others despise him; but when you’re Byun Baekhyun, who the hell cares?
can you describe your (muse’s) childhood?:
- Born and raised in the heart of Seoul, Baekhyun was anything but poor – granted, he wasn’t filthy rich by any means, but his father worked hard for his status in the company and they were well off; comfortable. Little Baek idolized his father to the very core. He worked hard in school, scored at the top of his every class, and eventually graduated middle school with nothing but the top honours of the class. He was the one kid with his nose constantly buried in a book; the one kid who knew practically the entire grade and had more friends than he could count, and the one kid who had gifts and shy confessions of love in the form of handwritten letters spilling from his locker. You could say he had it all, really. And no matter how many times Baekhyun had to politely decline the next person who came around asking for a date, he was still loved; admired; respected. Yearbook pages were filled, friendships were formed and an endless supply of memories were sealed behind knowing eyes; tucked away in beating hearts.
Come freshman year, though, everything came crashing down as quickly as it had up. Baekhyun’s mid-air bliss was cut short the same year his father decided to walk out on them, leaving his mother devastated and on the brink of depression. He felt betrayed; worthless, even– things turned sour between him and his mother and Baekhyun just didn’t know how to cope anymore. He became a dark, closed off individual and pushed all his old friends away, but an attractive being like him wasn’t fit for loneliness; it couldn’t last long when others were always watching him from some corner; always waiting for him to fall. He quickly befriended a new group of people– the very ones his old friends had told him to stay away from, but at this point he could care less. Parties came about every weekend, and of course along with heavy drinking, smoking, and an influx of the same kinds of people surrounding him. He gave in, of course; this became his coping mechanism and for as long as it lasted, he was going to enjoy it; he was going to let himself go.
Something seemed to change in him, if only just briefly, when one day at the club he met someone – he was an older guy, three years on Baekhyun’s measly sixteen at the time. He treated the younger with only the nicest of things, words sweeter than sugar and after a while, Baekhyun believed he’d fallen in love. The older male made him feel special; made him forget just how easily his father had left him and left Baekhyun’s heart fluttering with seemingly innocent promises of forever. He readily agreed when the other officially asked him to be his, of course, and for a while, Baekhyun believed he was alright, that this was going to be enough. It was just another two months when he walked into the small apartment of the older boy, having received a text telling him to join him for dinner for their anniversary that night. And he’d excitedly dressed himself that evening, a small gift and a bottle of wine in hand when he waltzed past the open door– only to find clothes littered across the floor and into the bedroom, where he saw the one thing that would ruin him forever. There his boyfriend was, naked in bed with another woman– and sensing Baekhyun’s presence, turned around with a sneer, the most disgusting of smirks at his lips as he hissed “You thought I loved you? Silly child, don’t you know the rules of the game? Love– what a joke. Get the hell out of my sight.”
Needless to say, that was all it took for Baekhyun to throw a screaming fit as he stormed out the door, tears streaming down his face, bottle forgotten and smashed just before he stumbled blindly into the nearby bar. He was crushed; broken; hurt beyond imagination. His boyfriend had been his everything; his first kiss, his first love, even his first time… when the elder had laid him into bed and made sweet love to him; whispered gentle nothings into his ear and told Baekhyun he was beautiful. That night he drowned everything in alcohol, despite throwing up twice, and carelessly offered himself to anyone who seemed interested enough, which, obviously, was not hard to do for a young and pretty one like him. He gave up everything, determined to make his ex see and prove just how great he could be without him; that he would fare just fine without love.
how would you describe your (muse’s) personality?:
- Sarcasm, sass, and defiance were all simply the rules to play by in one Byun Baekhyun’s book. Figurative book, of course- because Byun Baekhyun did not read, no– reading was for losers and Byun Baekhyun was not a loser in any sense of the term. He supposed he could blame the model in him, or maybe even the singer, for his big mouth and unsettling penchant for snark following his every second word, but he embraced it all the same and did not shed repentance whether one liked it or not. Baekhyun wasn’t an asshole, per se; he just happened to… condone self-confidence. Dark, raven locks framed equally dark orbs and a milky complexion made for the sole visuals of every girl’s dream – and as loud and obnoxious as he was known to be, both girls and boys were flocking at his heels, craving for another taste; hungering for just a glance of the campus beauty, high and proud in his own little world of self-actualization.
And, contrary to popular belief, Baekhyun had his own accepting circle of friends, too- some were quite like him (perhaps not quite so extravagant) but like him nonetheless; and others were quieter, more reserved, but he considered them his friends and friends were always more important than himself. Always. Yes, overbearing, high-maintenance little Baek had a heart softer than a pad of warm maple butter (and a voice smoother than blueberry syrup on cheesecake, but that’s a different story altogether-) but get on his bad side, and he’d just about considered you dead.
Beware of the dog, but watch out for the cat, too.

Instant Term Life Insurance Without an Exam – Haven Life Insurance Review
Historically, life insurance has been a taboo subject. As humans, we’re hardwired to think we’ll live forever. Since discussing life insurance means we’re addressing our own mortality, far too many of us choose to avoid the situation altogether.
Fortunately, the tide appears to be turning as more and more families choose to buy coverage for their families. As a 2016 study from life insurance research and development agency (LIMRA) showed, around 70 percent of American adults have some type of life insurance coverage. Further, the number of households with life insurance coverage grew by 5 million from 2010 to 2016 – showing an increase of 6 percent.
Parents under 45 with children in the home are buying coverage at higher levels than ever. From 2010 to 2016, individual coverage for millennials under the age of 35 also grew by a whopping 48 percent.
While this is all good news, far too many families still don’t have enough life insurance coverage in place. As a 2015 study from Bankrate showed, nearly half of respondents said they had less than $100,000 in coverage, while 21 percent noted they had $21,000 in coverage or less. While some coverage is better than nothing, for most families, this isn’t nearly enough.
Introducing Haven Life
Fortunately, there’s a new – and easy – way to purchase the right amount of term life insurance coverage for your family. With Haven Life, you can apply for a tailored life insurance policy online and get coverage in a matter of days – or even hours.
Better yet, you can purchase a Haven Life term life insurance policy on top of the life insurance coverage you already have. So, if you have a life insurance policy through your employer, you don’t have to give it up. Best of all, term life insurance typically coverage costs a lot less than you think.
But, why Haven Life? First off, Haven Life only sells affordable term life insurance. With Haven Life, you’ll never have to endure a long sales speech about whole life insurance that costs an arm and a leg. Since Haven Life only sells term coverage, you can shop for the coverage you want without worrying about cheesy salesman or absurd pricing. Keep in mind, a 35-year-old man could buy $500,000 in term life insurance coverage for as little as $21 per month!

Another huge reason to shop for life insurance with Haven Life? You can apply entirely online. By clicking through to Haven Life’s online application page, you could be on your way to affordable life insurance coverage in minutes. Simply fill out the application with your personal details, health information, and life insurance needs, and you’ll quickly find out how much you qualify for – and how much it costs.
And if you’re in perfect health, the news could be even better. Because Haven Life offers InstantTerm – a type of policy that doesn’t require a medical exam – those with excellent health could apply for life insurance coverage and have a policy in place within hours. You don’t have to apply for an  InstantTerm policy separately, either. Once you fill out Haven Life’s application, you’ll find out whether you qualify for  InstantTerm right away.  If you do not qualify,  you will have 90 days to go through the standard medical exam procedure that most other term life insurance companies employ.
Where you once had to sit in a stuffy insurance agent’s office to buy life insurance or get contacted by a bunch of agents through an online form, the online application process created by Haven Life has made buying a policy that much easier. Better yet, you’ll get the same quality of coverage you would buy through a normal agent and you get coverage that is competitive with the rest of the industry, even those that require a medical exam.
With Haven Life, you can count on receiving:
A simple online application process
No medical exam for qualified, healthy applicants
Easy price and policy comparisons
An immediate decision with InstantTerm
Backing of Mass Mutual, an insurer with 160 years of experience
A plain language no commission policy
The Haven Life Online Application Process
Since you’re reading this review, you’re probably aware you need more life insurance coverage. While you’ve taken a positive first step in the right direction, you’re not done yet. In order to receive the coverage your family so desperately needs, you need to move forward with the application process.
The good news is, the Haven Life online application process is simple – and with no strings attached. To get started, you’ll simply head to HavenLife.com and fill out some basic information on the home page. From there, you’ll select the prompt that says “begin application.”
Once you begin your application, you’ll need to fill out some basic information about yourself, your income, your family, and your health. Before you get started, here are some details you’ll need to have ready:
Name
Address
Income
Net Worth
Employment Status
Military Status
Criminal History
Driving History
Travel Plans
Tobacco Use
Alcohol Use
Health History
Social Security Number
Driver’s License Number
Once you submit the required information, you’ll get an answer immediately on whether you’re approved or not and how much your monthly premium will be. In some cases, you’ll need to complete a medical exam to get coverage, but will still have coverage while the underwriting process takes its course. Fort those who qualify with the best rate class, however, will likely qualify for an InstantTerm policy with no medical exam required. With Haven Life’s InstantTerm, you can apply for coverage in the morning and have a life insurance policy in place by afternoon.
How Much Does Term Life Insurance from Haven Life Cost?
While whole life insurance coverage can be prohibitively expensive, term life can be downright cheap. I filled out a few applications to work up some examples, and here’s what I found:
A 35-year-old woman in excellent health can buy a 20-year term policy with a death benefit of $500,000 for as little as $18.50 per month.
A 47-year-old man in excellent health can buy a 20-year term insurance policy for $500,000 for as little as $58.50 per month
A 26-year-old man can buy a 30-year term life policy for $250,000 for as little as $19.75 per month.
A 36-year-old woman can buy a 20-year policy for $750,000 for as little as $28 per month.
At the end of the day, the cost of your policy depends on factors such as your age, your health, and how much coverage you want to buy. That’s why filling out a preliminary application with Haven Life is the best way to get started – you don’t know how much you could save unless you apply. Even if you hope to buy a larger policy, it may be more affordable than you think.
On the other hand, Haven Life does have the right to deny applicants who have poor health or a higher risk of early death. And even if you’re quoted an affordable monthly rate, the true monthly premium of your policy could change once your medical exam results are read. Fortunately, you are not required to purchase a term life insurance policy from Haven Life – even after you submit an application and complete a medical exam.
Also keep in mind that Haven Life offers quotes from competing insurers as well as their own. If you could find a better deal on term life insurance elsewhere, Haven Life will let you know. Since term life insurance all works similarly, the best thing you can do is shop around among different issuers or at least compare prices before you buy. Haven Life makes this part easy by offering competing quotes directly on their own site.
What are People Saying About Haven Life?
Although Haven Life launched in May of 2015, they have already built an excellent reputation among both consumers and life insurance ratings agencies. This is partly because Haven Life is owned by MassMutual, an insurer with 160 years of experience in the life insurance business. As of September 2016, MassMutual and its subsidiaries C.M. Life Insurance Company and MML Bay State Life Insurance Company were rated by A.M. Best Company as A++ (Superior; Top category of 15).
Of course, ratings aren’t nearly as important as firsthand reviews and experience. Fortunately, I know one person who saved almost 50 percent on her premiums when she bought a 20-year term policy for $750,000 last year. Where another company quoted her $60 per month for coverage, a policy with Haven Life came in at just $28 per month.
Trust Pilot also offers a range of ongoing reviews from new Haven Life customers. Here are some of the reviews consumers have left:
“The experience with Have Life was excellent. The process was very easy and not burdensome. The response was quick and not drawn out like I experienced with other life insurance companies.” – Tiffani
“Can’t say enough good comments about this product and the ease , no hassle experience with this company. Their website is very easy to use which made it easy to decide exactly what I wanted. A couple of emails back and forth, a 20 minute visit by the nurse to for the medical checkup and that was it. No pressure, no trying to steer me to a different product, can’t beat it!” – William
“The process of buying life insurance through Haven Life was great. I dreaded going to see a financial advisor who would try to sell me on products I didn’t want or need. This was a perfect alternative to that process and took less than 30 minutes to complete. If you know what your looking for and don’t want the hassle of a salesman trying to upsell you, Haven Life is perfect.” – Benjamin
How Much Life Insurance Should I Buy?
If you’re one of the millions of Americans who have some life insurance coverage, you might wonder whether buying more is a good investment. Keep in mind that most experts suggest buying at least 5-10x your income in life insurance coverage. If you earn $50,000 per year, for example, you’ll want to have at least $250,000 – $500,000 in place.
While this is a good place to start, many experts believe you need a whole lot more. Fortunately, Haven Life offers a life insurance calculator you can play around with to get an idea of how much coverage to buy. Based on your answers to a series of questions, you can get a general range of coverage that will adequately protect your spouse and kids.
While there are numerous reasons to load up on life insurance coverage, here are some of the main life expenses your policy needs to cover:
Income Replacement – If you or your spouse were to pass away early, you would need to make sure your life insurance policy was adequate to replace your income during your working years.
College Tuition – If you have children and want them to attend college, it’s important to consider this expense when you buy life insurance. With enough coverage in place, you could get your kids through college debt-free.
Mortgage Payments – Whether you have the typical thirty-year mortgage or a loan with a shorter term, it’s important to consider how this loan will be paid off if you died. Consider adding enough life insurance to pay for your mortgage in its entirety upon your death.
Funeral Expenses – Passing away before your time is both tragic and expensive. Depending on the type of funeral your family plans, they might need to spend $10,000 or more. Make sure your life insurance policy is large enough to coverage funeral expenses in addition to everything else.
Children’s Expenses – Kids are expensive, and they only get more expensive as they age. If you have children at home, make sure you have plenty of coverage to pay for daily living expenses, college tuition, sporting events, weddings, and more.
Who Can Get a Haven Life Policy?
If you’re thinking about getting a Haven Life term life insurance policy, you’re in luck. Currently, the insurer sells affordable term life insurance in 48 states plus the District of Columbia. They’re not yet available in California or Montana, but they hope to change that soon.
To qualify for a policy, you must meet medical standards or pass a medical exam set up by Haven Life. You should be at least 18-years-old but younger than 65. You also need to meet the following qualifications:
Be a non-military U.S. citizen
Have a valid driver’s license
Not intend to use the policy for business purposes or to replace another policy
Conclusion
If you’re thinking of buying a term life insurance policy, don’t delay. The younger you are when you buy a policy, the more affordable your monthly premiums will be. And if you should happen to become sick, you’ll have peace of mind knowing you already have the life insurance coverage you need.
To get started, visit Haven Life’s home page to begin the quick and simple process of applying online. Within a matter of minutes, you should have a general idea of whether you’ll qualify, how much coverage you can buy, and how much your monthly premiums will cost.
You may not want to talk about life insurance, but you do need to act. Buying an inexpensive term policy is the best way to protect your family today, tomorrow, and always.
Do you have term life insurance coverage? How much did you pay?
