a midsummer night's dream (1999) a film full of ethereal whimsy and beautiful actors covered in body glitter. what more is there to say? ♡

picnic at hanging rock (1975) a hauntingly beautiful film that I watched as a child, it always stuck with me and I never heard those pan flutes the same, without feeling some chill rush up my spine. the film is about a group of girls who go missing on a valentine's day school trip.

daisies (1966) an experimental, surrealist journey of being a teenage girl.

rusalochka (1976) a dreamy, soviet fantasy film based off the little mermaid fairytale by hans christian anderson.

the love witch (2016) an iconic film that feels like it's been around for decades, about a witch with a desire for love. very lana del rey coded. a must-watch, in my opinion!

ophelia (2018) a retelling of hamlet told through ophelia's eyes, with beautiful costumes and a beautiful soundtrack!

pride & prejudice (2005) a forever classic in my heart. just the perfect period romance film! ♡

Show Within A Show

A fictional work has another fictional work within it.

HEAR ME OUT PEOPLE: "Show Within a Show" is usually the moment where I go batshit insane. Life imitates art, and art imitates life, and the show within a show is USUALLY where the author sticks in a very nice metaphor or symbol or another instance of a motif that from a literary analysis perspective is Awesome. Plot-wise, it can also be very fun. Think of anime protagonists putting on a play for their school festival! That counts! Think of Hamlet putting on "The Murder of Gonzago" to trigger his Uncle into basically confessing his guilt! Think of literally the entirety of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead! Show Within a Show is where you get to do some serious digging, some serious analysis, or you just get to watch performers performing performance. It also adds depth and new dimensions to characters that can just seem...tired. The "Itchy and Scratchy Show" and everything about Krusty the Klown from the Simpsons fits into this category. Krusty is a fucking MESS but you need the show within a show to explain why; otherwise, he's just a boring sad clown. Sometimes it's integral to the plot; sometimes it's just fun. It's a jack-of-all-trades kind of trope. Other examples of a Show Within a Show: The Goes Wrong Show, with its entire premise being that it is a show within a show. Pyramus and Thisbe from Midsummer Night's Dream. Singing in the Rain. Cabaret. Galaxy Quest. I Saw The TV Glow. I could name more examples, but I think I've proved my point.

Courtroom Episode

A (usually standalone) episode (or issue/chapter/quest etc depending on the medium) that features a court case, based in a piece of media that isn't otherwise focused on such things

You Get One Count of Arson Before You're Dubbed as a Pyromaniac (or something along those lines).

Nothing on this Earth will stop me from picking at the skin on my lips, I like it when they split. You might not be murderers but you reckon you could be. Love is held in teeth and skin and tongues and blood. Concrete mattresses and storms that won't end for months. Cigarettes that look like they've been rolled by a fucking five year old. Fingerless gloves look hot as shit but they don't keep your fingers warm and that kinda sucks. Red box dye and black nail polish. Maybe a new, cheap jacket would fix your problems. Time doesn't exist and you sleep through the days. Everything is filthy clean when the witching hour hits.

BTVS “Every Outfit” [BONUS] Willow & Tara “Once More With Feeling” Xx

I’ve gone on and on about how over the top everything is in this episode including the fashion, well it is never more apparent than in Willow and Tara’s case!!!

Tara rocks a skirt and the softness of her yellow sweater and the giant embroidered flower on said skirt and deliciously Earth witchy!!! Tara’s zigzag parting in her head is so iconic! I was so close to adding the “lethe’s bramble” but as a trauma response I chose not too 😅

Will in that over the top purple number is so beyond! All the textures and hues shouldn’t work but as if by magic (pun allert) they do, I blame the ridiculous cuteness of Alyson Hannigan! Her little hair do of the two braids is my fave and I wish she’d worn it more often!!!

THEN … “I’m Under Your Spell” …

The moment I seen Tara in that silk golden embroidered corset and loose flowing dress the trajectory of my life was permanently altered! I love my Buffy and her iconic looks but this is by far my favourite piece of costuming on the show! Paired with Willow in that pale pink dress with the earthy tree branch print and it was a done deal!!!

Everything about that scene is STUNNING! It’s so witchy and Shakespearean, very “Midsummer Nights Dream”! So ethereal and (context of the scene aside) romantic!!!

I was 10ish when I first seen this episode and to see two people of the same sex being able to be open with each other and bask in their love in a public setting really touched me and gave me hope ♥️
