Oath
This one is a bit different since I wrote it from like a third person perspective, but yet it still felt like a first person perspective since I was still writing from the character’s point of view as well.
A Middle Earth version of the dystopian movie ‘Noah’.

Thorin paced the hall, waiting for the Hobbit to return from the depths of Erebor. What took him so long? Surely he would have found the Arkenstone by this time. Unless, he was stealing away some of the gold for his own... That deceitful Hobbit, he should never have let him go down into the treasure hoard by himself...
"Oakenshield," a soft, velvety voice purred from the shadows, making Thorin place a hand on the hilt of his sword, startled.
"Who's there?" He questioned, his deep voice echoing as his steely blue eyes searched the pitch-dark corners of the stony cavern. "Show yourself!"
"Do not be impatient, Oakenshield..." The voice purred, and a tall, dark-haired man emerged from the shadows, dressed in a style of richness Thorin had never seen before. The man seemed to reflect the light, and walked with a grace he had never associated with man.
"Who are you?" Thorin questioned again, making the man smile, revealing perfect white teeth.
"A messenger from Smaug. He wants to strike a deal with you." The man said, voice quiet and oily. Thorin's brow furrowed, and he tightened his grip on the hilt of his sword. The man noticed this and laughed softly. "Relax, Oakenshield. I think you will like the terms."
"I will decide that for myself after I have heard them." Thorin rumbled, watching this strange man carefully. There was something he didn't quite trust about him.
"Smaug will give you Erebor, all the gold within its halls," here the man paused, scrutinizing Thorin's expression closely, "and the Arkenstone." At the mention of the Arkenstone, Thorin's eyes glittered strangely in the dim lighting, and the hand resting on his sword relaxed slightly.
"In return for what?" He asked quietly, "what does Smaug require?"
A little smile crossed the strange man's face as he watched Thorin. "A simple thing really, just a trifle..." He murmured, looking down at his clothing and brushing away an imaginary crease.
"What?" Thorin demanded, stepping closer and beginning to draw his sword from its sheath. "Tell me."
"Smaug requires the next daughter born into the Line of Durin. Really quite a simple exchange, don't you think?" He said, smirking.
Thorin thought over his words, the gleam in his eyes fading as his brow furrowed. "The next daughter born into Durin's Line? Why would Smaug--" He began to question, but the man interrupted him.
"The Arkenstone, Erebor and all its gold, in exchange for a girl. Is a girl more important than the Arkenstone? There will always be more girls, but there is only one Arkenstone, Oakenshield. Make your decision." He said quietly, and the gleam returned to Thorin's eyes.
"It is done. The next daughter born into Durin's Line in exchange for Erebor, its gold, and the Arkenstone." He said, reaching out to shake the man's hand. It was strangely slick and cold within his grasp, but Thorin paid no attention to it. The only thing on his mind was the Arkenstone, shining in all its glory.

Several months later....
"Uncle!" The call had Thorin stopping his work in the forge, turning around to see his nephew Fílí and his wife Loka approaching. By their side was his own beautiful wife, Estelle. All three of them wore wide, beaming smiles.
"Fílí, Loka," Thorin said, nodding to each of them as they stopped before him. "What brings you to the forges?" He asked curiously, noting the way Fílí had his arm around Loka's waist, keeping her close to him.
Loka's smile grew and she looked towards the ground, biting her lip as she smiled a secret smile, making Fílí chuckle softly as he gazed at her with adoring blue eyes. Thorin was confused by their behavior and turned to look at Estelle as she stood by his side. "Gehyith, what is it that has you all acting so strange?" He asked, and she smiled at him.
"It is not my place to tell, Thorin. Just let them speak." She murmured, and Thorin raised an eyebrow, turning to look back at his nephew before him.
Fílí took a deep breath, glancing at Loka for a moment before he began to speak. "Uncle, Loka and I have some wonderful news we would like to share with you..." He started, trailing off as Loka laid a hand on his arm.
"Thorin, I am with child." She said, beaming excitedly at him. Thorin felt his heart drop out of his chest. Then he remembered the jewel that haunted his dreams, calling to him constantly. A smile grew on his bearded face, and he opened his arms wide.
"That indeed is wonderful news! If the child is a girl, she will have a great purpose. I have never told you why Erebor was reclaimed so easily... Smaug gave it and pledged the Arkenstone to me in exchange for the next girl born into the Line of Durin." Thorin said, and a look of horror grew on Fílí and Loka's faces.
"Uncle! No!" Fílí cried, looking at his Uncle with a mixed expression of horror and disbelief on his features. "You can't do that with our child! I will not let you!" He said, drawing Loka up against his chest and holding her tight against him, a hand tangling in her dark locks.
Estelle looked at Thorin with a pleading expression. "Amrâlimê, how could you exchange a baby for Erebor? A baby!" She said, but Thorin didn't look at her.
"I did what was right. If the child is a girl, she will be given to Smaug in payment for the Arkenstone." He said roughly, and turned away to continue his work.
Fílí led Loka away, his arm tight around her. Burying his face into her hair, he took deep trembling breaths. "Amrâlimê, I swear to you that nothing will harm our child. I will not let anything happen to it. I promise." He said, his voice hard and determined.
Loka looked up at him, tears streaming down her face uncontrollably. Her blue eyes gazed into his, silently crying out the pain and heartache she felt inside. Words were impossible for her to form at this time.
~~~
Seven months later...
Loka paused in her walk through the hallways of Erebor, a slight grimace flashing across her face as she laid a hand on her swollen stomach. Breathing out heavily, she glanced up, catching sight of Thorin as he passed by, blue eyes focused on her figure.
Hurrying on her way, anxious to put distance between her and Thorin, Loka continued to the Great Hall, where several Dwarves were scattered throughout the room; some by the roaring fire, and others sitting in groups, talking quietly.
Loka found Fílí in one of the groups, and walked over to him. Fílí caught sight of her approaching, and stood up, a smile lighting up his face. "Loka, Ghivasheluh." He said, and placed a gentle hand on the small of her back, leading her over to the circle of chairs.
Easing herself down into the chair, Loka let out a sigh, her hands gently cradling her swollen abdomen. Fílí knelt beside her, looking up at her with a grin. "How is my beautiful wife feeling?" He asked, grabbing her hand and interlinking their fingers.
Loka laughed softly. "Tired..." She said, and took a deep breath, her free hand beginning to stroke her abdomen as her brow furrowed.
"Loka?" Fílí asked, his tone concerned as he watched her. "Is everything alright, My love?"
Estelle hurried over from a different group of chairs, coming to stand on Loka's other side. "Loka?" She called softly, and Loka glanced over at her.
"I'm fine... It's just a mild contraction. I've been having them all morning." She tried to soothe her husband and Estelle, but Fílí began to look more concerned.
"Loka, perhaps you should go to our chambers and rest." Fílí murmured, starting to try and help Loka out of the chair, but she shot him a glare.
"Fílí, I just sat down. I refuse to get up again and carry your child around until I am ready to do so." She growled, and Fílí gave up with a sigh. He sent Estelle a pleading look, but she shrugged.
"I cannot help you here, nephew. Pregnant Dwarrowdames can do pretty much whatever they want. Nothing short of delivery is going to stop them." She said, and gave Fílí a apologetic grin.
Heaving a sigh, Fílí gave Loka a frustrated look before he sat down in the chair beside her. Time passed slowly for him as he watched Loka fidget in her chair, biting her lip each time a contraction washed over her. Fílí couldn't help but get more anxious with each contraction that came, but no matter what he said, Loka wouldn't budge.
Then Thorin entered the room, glancing it around it until his gaze fell upon Loka as she breathed through a contraction, her blue eyes closed as she rested her head in a hand. Exhaling, she looked up, turning her gaze towards Fílí, who was watching Thorin closely.
"Fílí, I'd like to go to our chambers." She murmured, and Fílí's head snapped around to look at her, his blue eyes widening. A smile tugged at the corner of Loka's mouth as she took in his expression. "Fee, you look as though I'm going to give birth any moment... I can assure you that this baby isn't coming for a long time yet." She laughed quietly, accepting the hand that Fílí offered her to help her up.
Stretching, Loka let out a long breath, catching sight of Thorin standing in the doorway. "He always seems to be watching me." She whispered, looking over at Fílí with a frown. "It's quite disconcerting."
Fílí swallowed hard, looking back over at his Uncle with a cold expression. His wife shouldn't have to feel that way about Thorin. She shouldn't be scared of the Dwarrow Fílí knew as his father figure. "I'll protect you and our child, don't worry, Âzyungal." He murmured, wrapping an
arm around Loka's waist and walking slowly towards the doorway where Thorin stood.
But halfway through the room, Loka stopped dead, leaning heavily against Fílí as she buried her face in his shoulder, a low groan escaping her lips to become muffled in his shirt. "Loka?!" Fílí asked anxiously at her odd behavior. "Amrâlimê?"
Loka lifted her head, her mouth open as she panted. As she raised her crystal blue eyes to his, Fílí noted the panicked look they held. "Fílí, my water just broke." She whispered, and Fílí looked down at the ground, catching sight of the dark stain spreading across Loka's skirt. Then Loka suddenly doubled over, her face a mask of agony as her legs buckled beneath her; a guttural groan fleeing from her lips.
"Loka!" Fílí cried, quickly moving to hold her up. "Auntie!" He cried, looking around, trying to spot Estelle.
Estelle appeared quickly, giving Fílí a look. "Bring her to your chambers. I will meet you there once I fetch Lorelei from her vigil on Kílí. I will need her help." She said, and Fílí nodded, gently lifting Loka into his arms and cradling her close.
Thorin watched all this closely, and as soon as he saw Fílí heading towards him with Loka cradled in his arms, he turned and walked quickly down the hallway. It was time to notify Smaug's messenger that the payment might be ready today.
~~~
Fílí hurried into Loka and his bedroom, and eased Loka out of his arms onto the bed. Her eyes were closed as she panted, leaning back heavily against the pillows as she let out a soft cry. "I don't want to bring this child into this world." She whispered, opening tear filled blue eyes to look up at Fílí. "Not if such a horrible fate awaits it."
Fílí hushed her, grabbing her hand and squeezing it tightly in his calloused one. Caressing her face gently, he locked eyes with her. "I promised you that I would not let anything harm our child. That promise holds true today, Loka. Nothing will touch our child, I swear that to you again." He whispered, leaning down to press a quick kiss to her lips.
Then Estelle entered the room, closely followed by Lorelei. "Fílí, this is womens work. Let us be." She said, grabbing Fílí's arm and tugging him towards the door. Fílí shrugged out of her grip and walked towards the door on his own, giving Loka one last glance over his shoulder before he walked out of the door, closing it behind him.
Now that he stood alone in the hallway, Fílí drew his twin swords, ready to do whatever it took to prevent his Uncle from taking his child. His only hope was that the child would be a boy, and thus spared from being given to Smaug in exchange for a gem.
~~~
Several hours later...
Fílí paced in front of the oak door, wincing as a scream cut through the air. Vaguely, he could see a burly shadow at the end of the hallway. There was only one person who it could possibly be, and Fílí didn't want him anywhere near his wife and child.
Another cry emanated from behind the door, and Fílí looked over at it, praying that everything was okay. Surely it didn't take this long for a babe to be born.
~~~~
Loka panted heavily, sweat beading on her forehead as she brushed away the strands of dark brown hair that had escaped the braid she wore. Pain tightened around her again like an iron hand, and she let out a long groan of agony.
"You're doing good, Agnât'nana'." Lorelei soothed, gently massaging her back in an attempt to distract her from the pain of childbirth.
"How much longer do I have to endure this?" Loka whispered hoarsely, shifting her position on the bed. Estelle looked over at her from where she was folding blankets, and smiled.
"Only a few more hours, Nâtha. Babies take some time to come." She said, and Loka let out a moan, her face contorting with another contraction.
Lorelei rose suddenly, grabbing Loka's hand and squeezing it gently. "I'm going to go check on Kílí, then I will return, alright?" She murmured, and Loka nodded silently, her eyes closed in weariness.
~~~
Suddenly, the door opened and Lorelei stepped out of it, closing it softly behind her. She caught sight of Fílí standing in the hallway and smiled.
"How is she?" Fílí asked quickly, his heart pounding in his chest. Quickly, he sheathed his swords and walked closer to Lorelei. "My child...?"
Lorelei laughed, green eyes twinkling. "Loka is doing fine. And as for your child, it will not arrive for a few more hours yet. Now if you'll excuse me, I must go check on Kílí." She said, and brushed past him, down the hallway.
Fílí slumped against the wall, closing his eyes as he dropped his head into his heads. "A few more hours?" He murmured to the still hallway, shoulders tensing as he heard Loka's pained
moan.
~~~~
Several more hours later...
Fílí stood silently in the growing shadows, watching his Uncle as he conversed with a figure he couldn't see at the end of the hallway. Loka's screams echoed in his ears and he shot a glance towards the door, wondering how much longer it would take for the babe to arrive.
Suddenly, the screams ceased, and Fílí focused his gaze on the door, swallowing hard. Then the wavering cry of an infant broke through the silence and Fílí let out a relieved breath, tears springing to his eyes at the sound.
Forgetting all about his Uncle, Fílí hurried towards the door and burst through it, taking in the sight of Loka lying on the bed with a crying baby cradled in her arms.
"Loka," Fílí whispered, and she raised her head, looking at him with a tired smile on her face.
"Fílí."
Fílí grinned and hurried over to her side, seating himself on the bed beside her as he looked down at the small creation held carefully in his beloved's arms. He wrapped an arm around Loka's shoulders and leaned down to press a lingering kiss to her lips. "Zain abnâmal... I love you." He murmured into her sweat-soaked hair, making her smile wider and lean against him.
Looking back down at his child, a more prominent concern rose in Fílí's mind. "The child, is it...?" Fílí asked, and Loka raised her head, looking over at Estelle, who stood at the foot of the bed with a heartbroken expression on her face. "Auntie?" Fílí asked quietly, dreading what her answer was.
"I'm so sorry... The child is a girl." Estelle whispered, and a sob shook Loka's body. Burying her face into Fílí's chest, she held the child closer.
Fílí took a deep breath, rubbing Loka's back. "Amrâlimê, I swore to you that I wouldn't let anyone harm our daughter. I will keep my oath." He said in a quiet, firm voice and pulled away from Loka, standing up and walking towards the door as he drew his twin swords.
"Fílí!" Loka called after him, but he was deaf to her cries. He had his daughter's life to protect now.
Stepping out into the hallway, Fílí strode down it, his silver blades catching the light of the flickering torches lining the stone walls. "Uncle!" He called, catching the attention of the figure lingering at the beginning of the hallway. "I have a daughter! Touch her and I will slaughter you
where you stand." He called down the hallway, his voice shaking with rage.
"Fílí, don't be foolish. You can always have other daughters. There is only one Arkenstone." Thorin rumbled, but Fílí shook his head.
"You are wrong, Uncle. Your mind is so twisted and caught up in the gold-sickness that you don't see what you already have. You only see what you don't." He said softly, stopping a few paces away from Thorin.
"I will handle this, Thorin. No need for blood to be on your hands..." A velvety voice purred from the shadows, startling Fílí. He watched in horror as a tall figure stepped out from a corner and strode towards him, long claw-like nails flashing in the torchlight. "Step aside, Dwarf, and I will spare you. Resist, and you will die with your daughter." The man hissed, but Fílí shook his head, standing firm.
"I'd rather die fighting then die knowing I willingly gave up my daughter to a dragon." Fílí growled, and the man laughed.
"Too bad... You have spirit." The man said, and walked forward, grabbing Fílí's throat before he could react and lifting him off the ground. Fílí's swords fell to the ground with a loud clatter as he struggled against the restricting pressure of the man's hand.
Thorin watched as his sister-son writhed and gasped for breath, face turning red as he struggled vainly against the grip of Smaug's messenger. Slowly, as he watched, the fog began to disappear from his mind, and was replaced with clarity.
"Stop!" Thorin roared, and Smaug's messenger turned to look at him, surprise gleaming in his dark eyes. "Don't touch my irakdashat or his nâtha."
The man sighed, looking back at Fílí. "I knew you would do this. It takes a cruel person to watch their relative die and not feel any emotion. Fortunately, I did expect it, so you will die next." He murmured, but Thorin shook his head.
"I wouldn't be so sure of that, Smaug." He rumbled, making the man drop Fílí and whirl around to look at him with unadulterated shock in his eyes.
"How do you know who I am?" He hissed, and Thorin smiled.
"Simple, you have many of his same mannerisms, even in your human form." He said, drawing his sword and walking purposefully towards the human Smaug.
Smaug let out an inhuman sounding growl and ran towards Thorin, his long claw-like nails extending towards Thorin's throat.
But Thorin anticipated this move and ducked underneath, sending his sword straight through Smaug's side. Smaug's eyes widened in surprise, and he looked down in shock at the sword sprouting from his side for a moment before crumpling to the ground, never to rise again.
Thorin, satisfied that Smaug was dead, turned to tend to Fílí, who lay weakly on the stony floor, his chest heaving for breath.
"Uncle... Why?" He choked out, and Thorin smiled, kneeling beside him.
"It was as if I had a realization while he was choking you. Your daughter is blood of my blood, just as you are, Fílí. I couldn't watch him kill you before my very eyes." Thorin said, laying a hand on Fílí's shoulder.
Tears welled in Fílí's eyes as he looked up at his Uncle, biting his lip. "Thank you, Uncle." He whispered, struggling to rise to his feet. "I have to return to Loka, she will be worrying." He mumbled, and Thorin grinned, grabbing Fílí's hand and slinging it over his shoulder, supporting Fílí.
"I'm sure both her and your aunt are going to kill me, regardless of the fact that I killed Smaug." Thorin chuckled, amd Fílí nodded, pulling away from Thorin as they reached the door that would lead to Loka.
"Without a doubt, Uncle." He said, and pushed open the door, walking through it towards Loka.
~~~
At the sound of the door opening, Loka looked up from the child held protectively in her arms, and her blue eyes widened as she caught sight of Fílí walking towards her.
"Amrâlimê!" She cried, a smile lighting up her face as he sat beside her. "Fee--" But Fílí quickly cut her off by slanting his lips over hers, framing her cheek with a hand.
"Our daughter is safe, Amrâlimê. The dragon is dead." He whispered against her lips, and Loka gasped softly, tears welling in her eyes. "Everything is going to be alright, I promise."
some meta thoughts
I was reading some meta by @crowleyraejepsen about Aziraphale’s neoliberalist tendencies (which is extremely interesting and everyone should check it out), and it got me thinking about the relationships between Heaven (and Hell) and Earth, and the relationships between angels and demons and humans, as presented in the book and in the show. Some of my thoughts are about the in-universe, world-building implications, and some of them are about the book’s function as a work of satire. So, here we go.
One of the big themes of the book is free will, and how important it is. It is, to a certain extent, what separates angels and demons from humans and what makes Adam centrally important. And I was always kind of confused about that, because angels and demons obviously make choices that go counter to their “nature.” Demons fall because of choices they make, and the idea that they’re predestined to fall is pretty… well it’s pretty dark. And I don’t think it’s really accurate within the world-building, even though there are branches of Christianity that go in for that sort of determinism. So the conclusion I came to today is that free will, in this sense, isn’t about the ability to make choices, but about how those choices affect a being and their relationship to different power hierarchies. Humans can make a whole myriad of choices about their own nature. A human can completely change their morality, their relationship to power, the way they live their life, etc., quite easily and in a very short span of time, without really affecting their spirit, for lack of a better word. There’s no divine retribution for changing allegiances, for humans, during their lifetime, and it’s implied that even once started down a path in a particular direction, they can still course-adjust at any time (take Hastur’s priest temptation, for example). But for an angel or a demon, those sorts of changes are literally and immediately catastrophic. And while there may be other options (as seen in Aziraphale and Crowley adopting a lot of human mannerisms and behavior patterns), the only real example either angels or demons have for “what happens when I change my relationship to power or morality” is the Fall.
From an in-universe perspective, I think it’s safe to say that no one can be sure that absolutely everything isn’t predestined. That’s why ineffability is mentioned so often, but it’s especially why (I think) it’s consistently mentioned by Aziraphale, and also possibly why Aziraphale collects books of prophecy. Because prophecy represents a potential insight into ineffability, and because, for Aziraphale, it’s entirely possible that literally everything, including which angels fall when, is predetermined and part of the Plan. But he can’t be entirely certain. He can’t know, for example, that he won’t fall if he makes a big enough change in himself. He can’t know that he’s not going to, no matter how many texts he collects. Not even Agnes can tell him. And so his relationship to the power and hierarchy of the universe becomes to defend and reinforce it, mostly out of fear. Fear that if he changes himself too much too quickly, if he questions the way things are going, he could very easily lose his entire sense of self. We can see this in his repeated assertions that he can’t question the Divine Plan, and his defense of Heaven’s tactics, despite any misgivings he might have on personal moral grounds (see, the Noah’s Ark scene and crucifixion in the show, the “freedom fighters” and guns discussions in the book, etc.). Anything is permissible, as long the right side is doing it.
Now, Crowely. From the book:
People couldn’t become truly holy, [Aziraphale] said, unless they also had the opportunity to be definitively wicked. Crowley had thought about this for some time and, around about 1023, had said, Hang on, that only works, right, if you start everyone off equal, okay? You can’t start someone off in a muddy shack in the middle of a war zone and expect them to do as well as someone born in a castle. Ah, Aziraphale had said, that’s the good bit. The lower you start, the more opportunities you have. Crowley had said, That's lunatic. No, said Aziraphale, it's ineffable.
Obviously, Crowley isn’t a fan of the Ineffable Plan, and I’d posit it’s precisely because he’s already fallen. Oh, everything is predestined but demons and humans still get punished? What sort of plan is that? A psychotic one, that’s what. And so it’s easier for him to challenge the idea of a Great Plan, even though it also challenges the power he is subject to in Hell’s hierarchy, because he’s more scared of immovable predestination (who is he, if even becoming a demon isn’t actually based on his choices?) than he is of retribution (though he is, admittedly, quite scared of retribution).
From the book:
“It’s not that I disagree with you,” said the angel as they plodded along the grass. “It’ just that I’m not allowed to disobey. You know that.” “Me too,” said Crowley. Aziraphale gave him a sidelong glance. “Oh, come now,” he said, “you’re a demon after all.” “Yeah, but my people are only in favor of disobedience in general terms. It’s specific disobedience they come down on heavily.” “Such as disobedience to themselves?” “You’ve got it. You’d be amazed. Or perhaps you wouldn’t be.”
This, in the same conversation where he’s trying to convince Aziraphale to help him interfere with Warlock’s upbringing. And then, after the fiasco of Warlock’s birthday party:
“You’ll be amazed at the kind of things they can do to you, down there,” he said. “I imagine they’re very similar to the sort of thing they can do to one up there,” said Aziraphale. “Come off it, your lot get ineffable mercy,” said Crowley sourly. “Yes? Did you ever visit Gomorrah?” “Sure,” said the demon. “There was this great little tavern where you could get these terrific fermented date-palm cocktails with nutmeg and crushed lemongrass—” “I meant afterwards.” “Oh.”
So from these bits I infer that both Crowley and Aziraphale are, somewhat, operating under a sort of low-grade fear a lot of the time (and we can relate this to queerness and otherness and marginalization in a lot of societies too, but that’s a whole other essay or three). Fear that the power structures they’re aligned with but don’t quite fit into ("I suppose--get off the road you clown--your people wouldn't consider--and the scooter you rode in on--giving me asylum?" / "I was going to ask you the same thing--Watch out for that pedestrian!") are going to topple down on them.
But what are those power structures, exactly?
One of the most interesting differences between the show and the books for me was actually the depiction of Heaven and Hell. In the book, I got the impression that they were both bureaucracies, but that Heaven was run more like a government military (with commanding officers and a very strict chain of command, etc, but the Final Authority is actually someone else) and Hell is more like feudalism, with its dukes and lords and, ultimately, king, or as an office environment, with the contract department, etc. Both have paperwork, but somehow it’s not quite as bad as human paperwork (Crowley had been extremely impressed with the warranties offered by the computer industry, and had in fact sent a bundle Below to the department that drew up the Immortal Soul agreements, with a yellow memo form attached just saying:“Learn, guys”).
But in the show, Heaven is depicted more like a large, abusive corporation where the CEO is just never around so you have a rich, overpaid management team running amok doing whatever they feel like to enforce their influence, and Hell is … I’m not really sure what Hell is because the visual design evokes post-apocalyptic dystopian psuedo-anarchy generally governed by corrupt oligarchy. There’s probably a better word for it that I’m missing. Lots of concrete and closed in spaces and visual markers for poverty and imprisonment (possibly because, contrary to more medieval ideas, modern Christian-dominated society tends to relate poverty with sin and criminality--and as Pratchett observed in the guard novels, owning a slum isn’t a crime, but living in one very nearly is). There’s not an official set power structure (presumably, anyone can advance if they gather enough influence), but there is a hierarchy all the same.
Stemming from both of those depictions is a really interesting (to me) tangled bit of world-building, because there is absolutely no explicit in-universe reason Heaven or Hell should be set up this way. Why are Heaven and Hell such strict hierarchies? Out-of-universe it’s likely because the authors needed that structure in order to actually criticize it. The book’s discussion of religion and Church philosophy is pretty firmly based in a Western interpretation of modern Christianity, which makes sense because that's what the authors have experienced, and it makes sense also that they’d update the show’s depictions to represent more present-day reflections. But if you start with Eden, there’s two whole millennia (half the Earth’s in-canon existence!) before Christianity is a thing at all. (I’m focusing on Christianity here because that’s what the book does.) Did Heaven and Hell look different in those early times? Did they change alongside humanity? Or did humanity change to resemble the shape of Heaven and Hell?
Obviously the latter option is the one the Church has leaned into throughout history, but my theory is that that Heaven and Hell changed in response to humans. Looking at both authors’ other depictions of religion, human belief probably plays a strong role in how the Good Omens universe is actually structured. Which means that human society shapes everything. We’re not actually looking at a top-down hierarchy from day one, we’re looking at a representation of the cosmos that is constantly in flux for four millennia. Which then makes me wonder: Were Crowley and Aziraphale less afraid before, say, the crucifixion of Christ? There is certainly a stark difference between Aziraphale saying “I must have put it down somewhere, forget my own head next” (re: flaming sword and said to actual God) and the business with lighting candles and trying to appeal to a Higher Authority and then ... not really arguing when the Metatron disagrees with him. Did Aziraphale have different moral standards around social inequality before the consolidation of the Church in the Middle Ages, when (potentially) European politics and religion intertwined so closely that the structure of maintaining power on Earth (feudalism) became the new shape of Heaven and Hell? Were there periods when the difference between angel and demon were less rigid? There were obviously periods when more of them showed up on Earth more often (Gomorrah, Christ’s birth, etc.). So what changed? Because something changed by the time the 15th century rolled around and Crowley was getting commendations for things he didn’t even know were happening (Spanish Inquisition, in the book).
My personal headcanon is that humans decided demons and angels didn’t come to Earth much anymore. They started writing doctrine about how divine will was actually executed through Earthly representatives, like popes, and priests, and kings, and fostered social mythology that evil could get into your head and make you do things, even without actual possession, and that made it so. Not just in the structure of Heaven and Hell, but even in the structure of angels’ and demons’ minds. “Oh, there’s nothing more for us to do, really, but wait for Armageddon. The Big One we’ve all been waiting for.” Earth just kinda hums along on its own. No more big displays of power from visitors on either side, just that careful craftsmanship of a soul, if you feel like it. But Aziraphale and Crowley are still on Earth because they’ve always been there, and they are, by definition, Earthly representatives; they’ve had to adapt already, and now they have to adapt faster. Between changes in doctrine and population explosions, they had to learn to use humans more effectively, which means they had to think more like humans, and, on a certain level, become more human. They had to develop imagination, and ended up developing other things as well; Crowley develops compassion and morals, and Aziraphale develops vices and guile.
And then we have Adam, human incarnate, who believes things on scales beyond even what whole societies can muster up. And he “knows all about” Aziraphale and Crowley. And he doesn’t want an apocalypse. And he thinks people should start doing better when they’re alive, instead of waiting until they’re dead to sort things out.
What do you think Heaven and Hell look like now? How does that knowing affect Aziraphale and Crowley? Are they more human, with more ability to change than ever before? Or less? Can Aziraphale actually still fall? Could Crowley be forgiven?
It’s a whole new universe, when Adam’s done with it. Anything could happen.
As we get ready for Transparent 3 (which will officially open June 1st), we just thought it would be a nice reminder to look at all the great selections from Transparent 2.
So these next few nights we'll run the selections, finalists and winners clips every other night.
Barring another pandemic, global power outage or alien invasion, Transparent 3 will take place in NYC at The Producer's Club Thursday April 8th through 10th. One of the programs will be The Winners From 2020.
Here's how it unfolded. Thanks again for you support.
If Devo were formed in Ibiza today it might sound like this.... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=INn8c_n-FW0 May 20, 2020, 2:38 AM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. THE WINNERS - AND WRAP UP
The judges have made their decisions. I will acknowledge my own favorites in another post.
There are 2 or 3 films across all categories that are worthy of "Winner" status. This is also true in all three Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress categories.
One fact is indisputable. Features carry more weight than shorts in the decision making process because it's harder to maintain excellence for a longer period of time.
We would love to see more features, as well as follow up episodes in the TV Pilot Category. We will be providing a waiver/discount code for filmmakers who submit a second episode to Transparent 3 (2021).
Over this next year, we will continue to build out our streaming channel (TransparentFilmFestival.com). It's a great time to join if you haven't already. So support us as we promote the best in True Indie.
Our weekly show, Transparent Film Festival Presents will be expanding to new television markets.
Thank you all for the kind reviews. It was an amazing year despite the inherent challenges we all faced.
May 5, 2020, 12:01 PM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. IMPORTANT UPDATE:
We have just had confirmation that New York City will not be reopening for "Phase 2" (meaning bars and nightclubs), before at best, June 15. Accordingly, that precludes us from putting on a live screening this year.
The winning films as well as Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress will be announced on the next episode of Transparent Film Festival Presents (Friday night May 8th) at 9pm EST.
A program will be added to Transparent 3 (April 2021) that will include the winners from Transparent 2 (this year's festival). All winners from Transparent 2 will be included at the Transparent 3 Awards Ceremony.
Let's hope these assholes don't find a way to kill us all before then. Keep making art... or die trying.
Apr 23, 2020, 11:49 AM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. Just to give you an idea of what we’re dealing with on almost a daily basis.... An email from someone who hasn’t been following since October...
"...Have any films dropped out by any chance? We would love to screen. Has the festival been canceled? I’d still love to know why the movie wasn’t accepted. Between the 20 best picture awards we’ve already won and (they name drop a TV show) coming to an end and our lead actor being the star of (they name drop the same TV show) (and all over the media right now), I’m trying to understand the logic..."
Our response is this... Just so there’s no confusion...
We don’t care who you know, how many awards you won, how many people could “pack our screenings”, etc. We don’t need to explain our logic to you. We screen every film from beginning to end, let you know when we watched it and post screen grabs. The films make it to a second round and then go to our judges (who have Emmys and Grammys - one had an Oscar but he died), and they make the decisions not the festival organizers.
As far as when the finalists will be screened, that’s up to Governor Andrew Cuomo. If that doesn’t happen in May, we will do a show similar to the last one (The Finalists Episode), of Transparent Film Festival Presents the last weekend of May where we will announce the winners.
One final thought. Network Television sucks and all 5 of the TV Pilots in that category are just as good (if not better) than the show you referenced.
Nuff Said. Have a nice day.
Apr 16, 2020, 3:18 PM So you know how we're all sitting around with some extra time to be creative....
We started The Transparent Film Festival because, as filmmakers, we were tired of getting ripped off. Ripped off by “film festivals” collecting submissions fees and sending us a form letter. In many cases, we weren’t even told whether we were accepted or rejected. Sundance (we’ll never bother with that again), had 13,000 submissions in 2018 and maybe a dozen people “to screen them”. Do the math. And factor in features. So our concept was, start a festival, get qualified judges, watch every frame and prove it by showing on Facebook that we watched your film and when, let the filmmakers know what we thought. Here are the best of the best, of the best. In some cases we’re still arguing (Best Short and Best Actress). We’ll keep you in the loop. UPDATE: We have so much news we'd like to share, but we're so busy working that I'll just have to encapsulate a few items. 1. Just got this statistic (photo attached). While many film festivals talk a good game, we deliver. 2. The next episode of Transparent Film Festival Presents (Episode 26) will air Friday night at 9pm EST. The show will feature the two finalists in each category. We can tell you that the choices have been made in all film categories but the SHORTS category where there is an intense debate going on. In Bet Feature, Documentary, Mobile, Foreign, Performance, and Horror - we have narrowed the field. And it was hard!!!! 3. Episode 27 of Transparent Film Festival Presents (Bubble), will feature some of the films that could have easily been selected. They were that good. But we just couldn't select everyone. So this "Honorable Mention" show is for them. 4. We will. be announcing our first writing challenge with a Cash Prize for the winning submission. It involves finishing a script that was half finished. More about that soon. UPDATE: We have so much news we'd like to share, but we're so busy working that I'll just have to encapsulate a few items.
1. Just got this statistic (photo attached). While many film festivals talk a good game, we deliver.
2. The next episode of Transparent Film Festival Presents (Episode 26) will air Friday night at 9pm EST. The show will feature the two finalists in each category. We can tell you that the choices have been made in all film categories but the SHORTS category where there is an intense debate going on. In Bet Feature, Documentary, Mobile, Foreign, Performance, and Horror - we have narrowed the field. And it was hard!!!!
3. Episode 27 of Transparent Film Festival Presents (Bubble), will feature some of the films that could have easily been selected. They were that good. But we just couldn't select everyone. So this "Honorable Mention" show is for them.
4. We will. be announcing our first writing challenge with a Cash Prize for the winning submission. It involves finishing a script that was half finished. More about that soon.
UPDATE SUNDAY NIGHT 12:15 EST
Transparent Film Festival 2020 is coming to a close.
We want to thank everyone for what will surely be a most memorable film festival. We screened every frame of close to 300 films, provided our notes and ratings, and chose the films we thought were the best of the best. Then, the Coronavirus.
We will leave the programs up until 11:59 pm PCT (Pacific) to accommodate all those great films from California and Vancouver.
Tomorrow (Monday), we'll send out an update as to what happens next. We will post here, as well as email everyone.
Again, great job to you all. When FilmFreeway.com as if you want to leave a review, we hope you will.
Lots of great posts below below btw.
Apr 4, 2020, 3:02 PM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. Guys it’s simple... click the button. Choose the program you want. Pay for your ticket.
One of the things we’re hearing back is how impressed each of you are - with EVERYONE ELSE that they’re competing against. We’ve given out comps to approximately half the filmmakers. The rest I guess don’t know or didn’t care.
We posted several months ago, that completing your film is only the beginning. Making money and being successful in the business, is a whole ‘nother thing. Interacting with and collaborating with others, learning and teaching others, attending screenings and the film markets and making connections, and so on.
If you think that people are just going to drop out of the sky and love your film, good luck. 😉 However, seeing the methods and techniques utilized by your fellow filmmakers, is alone worth the price of admission. The All Access Subscription for $25 (for a year!!!) is like a semester of film school. That’s how incredible these films are. And they are from all over the world. Especially the foreign films competition, it’s mind-boggling.
You can’t become a successful filmmaker in a vacuum.
Comps for filmmakers are available until midnight. We have someone standing by to accommodate you.
Apr 2, 2020, 9:49 PM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. IMPORTANT UPDATE
We want to thank all of our judges, techs and staff for helping us pull this off at this most difficult time. That's how much we honor all of you.
Several filmmakers have now received their comp to the program in which their film is screening. We have verified with several of you already that the process works. The comps are just that, for you. However, please understand we have excellent analytics.
Anyone trying to use a comp email login from multiple IP addresses, will have their access revoked - and their film removed from the competition.
It takes a lot of time to set this up, for each individual comp. This is why we aren't just automatically adding people unless they requested access. It would take more time than we have, especially with a skeleton staff due to the virus.
As we said in our email to all filmmakers, whose films are screening as part of the festival - YOU MUST REQUEST YOUR COMP BY MIDNIGHT TONIGHT (EST - NYC Time).
Now for a bit of bad news.
A friend of the festival with whom some of us worked back in November, has died of the Coronavirus. So, there's that.
We will check in again just before the official start of the festival at midnight tonight and make sure every filmmaker who has requested a comp for their program, has one.
5 QUICK FACTS re TRANSPARENT 2020 (COVID-19 Version)
As New York City is on "lockdown", we will continue with our festival online. When restrictions are lifted and it is deemed safe to hold our festival, we will get new dates and hold our live film festival event.
The film festival will take place here: www.transparentfilmfestival.com
Filmmakers please take note:
1. We need your 1920 x 1080 compressed movs or mp4s no later than 5 pm Tuesday to be included in the festival (online). There will be no exceptions. We have to sequence several programs. Programs will be a mix of genres and will time at approximately 3 hours each.
2. Films that screen online will be given priority with respect to the live festival when scheduled. This means that we don't know what's going to happen in the future with the pandemic situation and what we're going to have access to in the future. However, those films that screen this weekend, will be given first consideration if and when the live festival is scheduled.
3. Films that screen online as part of the festival will be uploaded to TransparentFilmFestival.com. After the festival, all films selected and uploaded for the 2020 Transparent Film Festival will be promptly deleted UPON NOTIFICATION BY SUBMITTING FILMMAKER.
4. There will be two types of digital tickets available: The first is per program and the second is for "ALL ACCESS" which will allow for the viewing of all festival content.
5. Each filmmaker taking part in the online festival will receive 1 comp to view the program in which their film is included. To receive your comp access, or if you have any questions at all, please email us at [email protected].
Mar 19, 2020, 8:44 PM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. IMPORTANT UPDATE
Filmmakers please read.
NYC has closed down. We will be most likely postponing the live screenings however, we will screen the selected films online on Friday Night April 3rd and Saturday Night April 4th at the same times as they would have screened.
This will also be the same order that they will screen not if, but WHEN we secure our new dates at the same venue - the Producers Club - which has been paid for in full.
We will also be able to screen additional films that deserve the selection laurels because they are that well produced, but wouldn't have been able to screen live due to time constraints. We were going to get a 3rd day, but then things changed in a hurry.
A good thing is that we will be able to screen more features instead of only when.
We will let you know about new dates (if indeed we need to postpone the live screenings) as soon as the danger from COVID-19 has passed. But for now, all entertainment venues in NYC are closed, and no public gatherings with more than 10 people are permitted. So it's out of our control.
THAT SAID.... we will be airing our Selections Special this Friday night right here on Facebook while doing watch parties with about 20 filmmaking groups at 8PM EST.
It's going to be a great show. Please all of you stay safe.
6 of the films that have been selected for this year's Transparent Film Festival. Music Performance by Hall & Oates. Mar 7, 2020, 1:28 AM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. NOTICE TO ALL FILMMAKERS:
The first selections have been announced.
We keep getting emails from some of you mistakenly thinking that your film has already screened, like in some online festival.
When we do a post about your film, with stills, and a screened on day and date, that is just the proof of our having watched (or “screened”), your film.
What sets us apart from every other festival (and why we are a top 100 festival on Film Freeway), is because we can document when we watched your film. If you want, you can cross reference with Vimeo or YouTube analytics for that day, so you can see we watched your entire film.
Generally, the more screen grabs, the more we liked your film. Though this is not always the case.
The festival itself is on Friday night, April 3rd, and Saturday night April 4 with a party after the Awards Ceremony.
Selections will first be announced on the Friday night March 20 episode of Transparent film Festival presents.
Lastly, if you’re not already, you may want to follow this page. Important information as well as announcements will be posted here especially as we draw closer to the festival.
We're trying our best to get everyone their customized laurels - because you all deserve them. That said... There are some fake Transparent Film Festival Laurels out there so just know - if they don't look like this.... they don't mean anything. Okay so..... this is the latest.
Note to filmmakers- the 60fps won’t work or at 4K.
As it states in the festival description we need 1920 x 1080 at 30fps.
Otherwise your film may sputter. No sputtering allowed.
Inbox me if you think your film fits this description.
Mar 3, 2019, 12:11 PM Transparent Film Festival updated their status. Quick heads up. Memorialized here for all to see.
We've received about 1/3 of the downloads so far for the Live Event.
Some filmmakers who were chosen as finalists.... their emails bounced. Others who were chosen as finalists haven't acknowledged their status.
We're going to have a real short leash because everything is about putting on a show now.
Please get your download links at 1920x1080 with reasonable compression by the end of this week at the latest. We need to test on the screen.
If we don't have your downloads soon, we'll pivot to the Semi-Finalists.
Logan: The Superhero Genre Breaks Out of Its Mold
Welcome to the year 2029. A dystopian world in which farmers are growing nothing but corn for corn syrup and the differences between the “haves” and the “have nots” has grown significantly. An empty world where automated driver-less driving has been adapted by trucking companies to save money on human expenses and semi-less 18 wheelers fly down the highway at breakneck speeds. A frightening world where pharmaceutical companies experiment on immigrant Mexican women to create drugs to enhance abilities for the military. A xenophobic (potentially post-Trump) world where people shout “U.S.A.” at the border crossing between Mexico and the U.S. And an unrecognizable world where mutants in the X-Men franchise have almost all but been eliminated from the Earth.
Logan is the latest incarnation of the X-Men films. It’s directed by James Mangold who also directed The Wolverine and is a bleak yet fitting conclusion to the story of everyone’s favorite Canadian mutant. As stated, it is the future. 2029. Logan, a.k.a. Wolverine, played here by a grizzled yet jacked up Hugh Jackman, hides under an assumed alias and works as an Uber-ish limousine driver. He gives rides to his fair share of rich assholes, prom-going teen-punks and lascivious bridesmaids in his 2029 Chrysler limousine, all in an attempt to earn enough money to buy a boat. Why a boat? Because he needs a place to keep his friend and father figure Charles Xavier, played one last time by the incredible Patrick Stewart. Charles is now suffering from dementia.
But because Charles is who he is, his dementia carries with it potentially catastrophic consequences; the government, or whatever is left of it given the nature of today’s reality and the dark future this film paints, classifies Charles as a weapon of mass destruction. (By the way, this film serves as the world’s notice that Patrick Stewart, Captain Jean Luc Picard himself, is ready to play King Lear. I don’t say that in jest - Stewart is magnificent and would be a haunting Lear, which is one of Shakespeare’s greatest roles.)
To maintain Charles’ safety, Logan keeps him well-medicated inside an abandoned water tank in a Road Warrior-esque compound near the border of Mexico under the watchful eye of the equally decrepit mutant Caliban, delightfully played by Stephen Merchant. The scenes where the three of them interact, with Logan now playing the role of the estranged son who has to show up to the nursing home to take care of his two aging, pain-in-the-ass relatives are truly hilarious and provide much-needed comic relief in what is an otherwise very dark film. These scenes reminded me very clearly of the “joys” of middle age, and having to take care of loved ones who have long since forgotten who they’re even talking to. And it is that begrudging responsibility which not only lends itself to the plot, but also the significant meaning of the film.
It is revealed that these are probably the last mutants alive; it is never revealed how and why that is the case. But a clue comes from the fact that the film is based, in part, on the Marvel Comic series Old Man Logan, created by Mark Millar and artist Steve McNiven. Millar and McNiven’s series is definitely in the DNA of Logan, and gives the film the feel that something has gone horribly wrong, not only with mutants but with America itself. Watching the film and how it deals with the treatment of immigrants and border patrols is especially striking given the recent executive overreach on banning immigration.
When Logan discovers that there is a child named Laura who bears a striking resemblance to himself in terms of his mutation (not to mention level of aggression) and that she and other children have been “created” by a pharmaceutical lab in search of creating the perfect weapon, Charles convinces Logan to try to save the child and take her to Eden, a secret location in North Dakota, far from the Mexican border. What follows is a combination road film/fugitive story as the pharmaceutical company goes in pursuit of the escaped child and the “weapon of mass destruction” tagging along in the back seat who needs his hourly medication.
A significant influence on the film lies in the tried and true traditional western archetype of the “man with no name.” The film even shows scenes from the 1953 film Shane, another lone killer who does the right thing because he can and because it’s the right thing to do, knowing full well that the sins of his past will eventually come back to get him in the end.
What’s most striking about the film is its break in tone from the other X-Men franchise movies, as well as the superhero genre in general. Like the new Noah Hawley series Legion, Logan is a striking change from the tightly controlled feel of DC Comics films and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There are so many moments of “Oh my GOD what did I just see?” action followed by moments of quiet and despair. This film just doesn’t feel like a superhero film. It feels like a dystopian western film noir; and Jackman’s incredible potentially Oscar-worthy performance as the now Adamantium-sickened Wolverine is a fitting conclusion to what is his tenth performance in the role. Logan is a stirring adventure film, but at its heart, it’s a love story. Not in the traditional romantic comedy tradition, but in the sense of recognizing family in every sense of the word.
