So 'between a rock and a hard place' is a phrase in English that basically means you have to make a difficult decision and neither of the available options are very good. My apologies if that doesn't translate well across culture or language barriers. I was intentionally being vague about what I was referencing, just because I've gotten roasted on here for sharing my thoughts before, but since you asked I'll elaborate a bit.

I’ll put the rest under a cut to save your dashes.  

Depending on the translation you read, Namjoon said something in his acceptance speech along the lines of 'soon we'll have things sorted out and we'll be able to be more honest with you/show you our true selves'. Several of the members made comments during the infamous Festa Dinner about wishing they could be more honest/tell us more, despite the fact that we learned SO much more during that hour than we've heard them say pretty much ever.  Clearly there is more they’re not sharing, but I think they’re also being intentionally vague.  The BTS guys are all so conscious of what they share with the world, I feel like they wouldn’t keep making comments like that without knowing we’d all likely try to figure out what they were referencing.  We’re all just trying to read between the lines here, most of us are probably wrong, but it’s hard to resist trying to solve the puzzle even if you know there are missing pieces.

At the surface level, they are seven completely different men who have all grown and worked together for a decade.  I do think they all get along and have a good working relationship, but have you ever had any friend or co-worker that you agreed with on literally everything for ten years straight?  Imagine seven people?  I’m sure they have had some differences with each other, with big hit/hybe over all kinds of things.  Song choices, schedules, creative direction, endorsements, enlistment, solo releases, branding, the list goes on.  It is impossible that all seven of them and the label have had a hive (hybe lol) mind and been on the same page for strategy of all of this for years on end.  We’ll never know what is he referencing being ‘honest’ about in that specific speech, but given how little they’ve said about any of those things it’s fair to assume there has been a lot that hasn’t been shared with us.  It has to be immensely difficult to be trying to work through huge hurdles like enlistment and the future of the band, and then have to constantly get in front of the public and pretend that everything is great and no one has ever disagreed.  Imagine if you had even a petty fight with your friend over something stupid, and then you had to go to an award show and do interviews, perform with them, play nice and hide how you’re really feeling.  For a decade, and I’m sure they have disagreed over things bigger than dumplings.

It seems obvious that there are bigger things going on, especially that we now know that they were planning on taking a break after their 2020 tour.  The Festa dinner made it seem like they have been doing short term plan after short term plan for two and a half years thinking that a post Covid tour and/or enlistment were around the corner.  Having no long term plan with a tour and/or enlistment looming for years now sounds so mentally exhausting.  It seems like they’re finally at a point where they can’t just keep putting off these things. They’re at peak fame, the entire world is watching to see what actually comes next and is bound to have an opinion on it. Enlistment means not fully cashing in on all the money on the table, exemption can mean a lot of unfavorable things for them as well.  Rock and a hard place, neither option fully desirable.  Right now, it seems like that some hybrid not-really-an-exemption solution is being negotiated where they ‘serve’ but also still do concerts....I haven’t been following it super closely but it does seem like it’s been dragging out forever.

What is Namjoon looking forward to being more honest about, who knows.  Is it the future of the group, solo launches, how much they might hate certain endorsement deals, the enlistment situation, the Busan concert drama, their hiatus/non-hiatus announcement, whatever the hell ‘Chapter 2′ is or was supposed to be, thoughts on their musical direction the last couple of years, label disagreements....could be all of this or none of this.  They have a lot of big stuff going on, we see very little of it, and what we do see is curated so we only know the good parts and the final outcomes.  Like I’ve been saying since the infamous Festa dinner came out, I just really hope what plays out is what the guys want.  I’m apprehensive that’s always the case because you know, capitalism and the history of pretty much every boy band that has ever existed.  What I think about it really doesn’t matter, I just know they’re in a tough spot and whatever happens next is going to upset some people no matter what it is.

-rly like caitlin glass’ machi, i thought her monologue on the train was fantastic. very quiet and pained in a tired way, rly good reading. i liked how she played machi worked up too. i dont think she’s quite as good as the jpn actor but still great regardless

-yuki sounds 40 as always

-bailey and jewell have SUCH good chemistry, their flirting in this ep is making me super excited to hear a lot of scenes in eng in s3

-(hatori voice) shut UP

-sometimes i feel like burgmeier leans into shigure’s flippancy a little too much and isn’t pointed enough. it still works because it’s shigure and i don’t fully disagree w his take on the character/lines but i miss the intensity that nakamura offers

-akito’s first “apologize.” left me GASPING clinkenbeard fucking GETS IT!!!! it’s soooo hugely emotional and i love the way she totally lets loose for akitos next line (“do it NOW”) oh ya...perfectly delivered imo, she rly grasped the gravity of the situation for akito

-i have this weird thing with vale where he is very inconsistent. i actually thought his scene w hatori was rly good and it was probably because he was speaking like a human and not an actor lmao

-oh my GOD the kureno/akito scene right after the cold open....clinkenbeard is incredible, so painfully genuine + so shines a light on how good akito is as manipulating others and justifying their own actions to themselves. also akito sounds particularly boyish in this scene (for the english dub anyway; i think sakamoto’s voice is just more naturally boyish than clinkenbeard’s) + i like that she utilized this early-morning type voice to lean into that. also it’s just a banger of a scene

-loved akito yelling at shigure in flashback, i like this bit as a whole because it’s such an obvious couple fight but i loved how it sounded like akito was holding back tears towards the end of it when they’re asking why shigure can’t put them first “for once”

-like i’ve said before i think burgmeier’s shigure is a lot more casual and flippant than nakamura’s so i reeeeally liked the quick dip into spite with “you’re one to talk.” it seemed very intentional on the actor’s part and was a great choice imo, really stood out

-i also like how loaded his delivery is when he’s asking hatori if he thinks there’s something off about kureno, and then he turns to mocking with “you don’t accept it? because you’re scared?” 👌👌👌 v good

-OOOOH the hostility in shigures voice when kureno calls, rlyyyy great, and i love how that hostility feeds into his frankness towards the end of the convo. amazing line readings

-i feel like everything i criticize vale for, sinclair does right; he reeeeeally sits in the emotion and doesn’t concern himself w telegraphing it, which is excellent for a character like kureno who has cut himself off from his emotions so that he won’t be hurt by how much he wants

-ugh and then when he starts crying.....SO GOOD!!!! I FELT THAT!!!!!

-VERY underwhelmed by whoever plays child akito, so completely pales in comparison to sakamotos truly outstanding performance in the curse breaking scene. i don’t think it was clinkenbeard but it probably should’ve been

-translation note: in the japanese kureno is the “tori” which means bird but also refers to the rooster of the chinese zodiac, but based on the imagery in fb i think kureno was actually a sparrow and not a rooster. by choosing that word takaya has more freedom in how she can portray kureno’s imagery. so it is interesting to me that the dub chose “rooster” and not “bird” considering how much non-rooster bird imagery is attached to kureno, and it makes the sparrow thing make a little less sense imo

I disagree. Yes, what she wrote was amazing and I grew up reading Harry Potter and it was a huge influence to me. But that doesn't excuse the fact that now she is choosing not to add more representation in the latest movies that take place in that wonderful world she created. She is choosing to ignore some of her fans, she is choosing not to take any "risks", she is choosing to turn her back on some communities. (Part 1)

She is one of the most well-known person in the world, her choices affect a lot of people, she could make such a good impact on the world and help the LGBTQ+ community but she chose not to. And I have to admit I’m disappointed that you think that what she gave us excuses her from any bad choice she makes from now on — (Sorry for any grammar mistakes, english is not my first language. And also, I hope I dont sound rude, I’m just so sad that she is letting some of us down… She used to be a role model for me…) have a good day.

That being said, I’m going to play a bit of the devil’s advocate right now because I find that too often, people tend to only see things from one point of view, and completely disregard every other option.

Let’s first look at a quote from the director of Fantastic Beasts:

Not. Explicitly. 

This does not mean it won’t be in there at all. 

Now I’ll approach the topic of LGBTQ+ in the Harry Potter series. 

This is not a simple, straightforward issue. There are a lot more factors that go into this than people realize. It’s easy to say “You should do this” when you’re not the one in Rowling’s position… 

Just because someone is considered to be popular or influential, doesn’t mean they suddenly, miraculously possess the ability to handle the kind of backlash that can come from stepping out of the safety-net of the majority. 

It’s easy to say “you need to do what’s right” when you’re not the one being faced with MILLIONS of fans, all shouting something different at you, and telling you what you should believe (and potentially getting aggressive or threatening in their demands). 

It’s absolutely terrifying facing that sort of audience alone. Many of us would fall apart under that sort of pressure. 

No one should be forced to become a martyr for a cause that they don’t fully understand… that’s a personal decision, and one that many of us wouldn’t make. 

This is why communication and empathy is so important. 

If we cannot learn how to discuss instead of argue/accuse, see the issue from all sides, and be objective, we’ll never be able to progress. Progression requires unity and empathy. When we are the individuals trying to create change, we have to be patient and understanding towards those who might not completely understand or we will create antipathy for our cause. 

We’re part of an entirely different generation (and not everyone in this generation is on the same page). We’ve grown up in different circumstances with a completely different view of the world. What we believe to be moral and right doesn’t necessarily translate to people who have grown up being told something completely different. Changing your entire world view is not an easy task… I’ve done it before, and it takes a LOT of time. 

Harry Potter is arguably the most influential fantasy series of our time. It’s a wonderful, imaginative series that brought many people together and sparked an insane amount of creativity in the world. Now, Rowling has done many things that I don’t agree with, but there’s positive and negative traits in all of us, and we don’t know the whole story behind other’s actions. 

Artists create based on what they personally relate to. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve received aggressive messages telling me what I should or should not include in my content. Creation is not a menu that people can order from, it’s a personal process.  

If we continue to attack creators for everything that doesn’t coincide with our world views, they will stop creating out of fear. Instead of placing your expectations on other creators to deliver content that fits your world view… create what you want to see. ))
