OKAY! essay time >:)

I'm not really sure where to start with this, but I guess I'll start with my observations about him. Note that most of this will pertain directly to Evo and 3rd Life/Last Life. I've seen his Empires pov but I separate Empires!Jimmy and Evo/3L/LL!Jimmy as characters due to the different backstories in Empires. I'm...im gonna put a cut here because this gets. so long

Jimmy's just...nice. He's a friendly person. He's good natured and kind and a bit goofy. Somehow he manages to pretty quickly endear himself to people, even when they're making fun of him. He likes being in the middle of things and making people laugh--even if it's at him. While I don't think he necessarily always intends to be the butt of people's jokes, I think he is willing to be sometimes, which is honestly a really strong thing for someone. He's a very fun person, and has a big mischievous streak and a tendency to prank people, but his pranks are normally pretty harmless and non-destructive. That ties into something I'm going to talk about further on--Jimmy does not want to hurt people.

He's also not very assertive, and tends to get walked over in situations. Jimmy is normally not on top. Nobody views him as a threat, but they're kind of right because he normally isn't a threat anyway. He's a bit too trusting of people, and wants to see the good in them, to the point where it can turn back and hurt him.

He can be hesitant on taking action, which sometimes leads to him being stuck in a bad situation with no time left to leave, at which point he normally tries to surrender instead of fight. Vice versa, he also frequently obliviously walks straight into situations without thinking them through, when if he'd studied the situation longer he might have seen the danger. It's almost a little baffling. He doesn't really have a good ability to gauge situations--Martyn, however, is very good at this.

I think he's pretty strongly motivated to protect his friends/people he loves. Just like Martyn. He cares a lot about them, and wants to keep them safe. But Jimmy struggles with his ability to do this. He's not particularly powerful or a good fighter. He also doesn't want to hurt anyone. AFAIK, the only kill he's ever gotten in either 3rd Life or Last Life was his Boogeyman kill on Lizzie, and even that was an indirect trap kill. He's just not a fighter. Which is a problem when you need to fight to protect people, or to win the game. He also strikes me as someone who needs to be around people, and doesn't do well with loneliness (which is...honestly backed up by his post-dragon fight Evo lore.)

Getting more into headcanon territory instead of characterization/observations, but I like Listener!Jimmy a lot. cc!Martyn said in his lore vod that the Listeners chose Jimmy as their "confidant" and someone who could carry out action on their behalf. Which indeed was true, because they literally took Jimmy, sent him to the future and dropped him alone in old spawn to carry out a mission for them. I wish he'd expanded more on the Evo Listener lore and how he and Jimmy were connected to it in his vod, but we got so much more than I'd ever dreamed of.

For my fanfic (although I normally carry across headcanons to all my writing) I've spent a lot of time setting up up Jimmy and Grian as...foils, perhaps? I could probably draw a chart comparing and contrasting them and their subsequent powers as Listener/Watcher and their backstories. cc!Martyn implies that the Listeners are a sect that broke off from the Watchers, but in my headcanon if that happened it was long enough ago for them to develop different appearances and powers. However, I still believe them to be counterparts and they share some commonality.

Anyway, one of the major contrasts between Jimmy and Grian is how they came to join the Listeners/Watchers. It's very common fanon, but I'm fond of the Watchers having kidnapped Grian (and, I may be pedantic, but the wording they used in the post-dragon fight end screen was specifically that he was "taken," and Martyn described it using the same word on his lore explaining stream. to me, that word carries "not willingly" connotations, so I chose to interpret it this way.) Jimmy, however...I think Jimmy joined willingly. Remember how I said he wants to protect his friends? That includes from the Watchers. Jimmy says in Evo that he thinks they're evil. He seems scared of them, and very aware of their ability to punish the players. He's even a bit paranoid, honestly--there's a whole thing towards the end of the series where he's convinced that every cow on the server is a vessel for the Watchers to be spying on them. Which...doesn't seem like the behavior of someone who isn't afraid.

Anyway, the Listeners are against the Watchers. Based on their canon actions on Evo, they seek to undermine the Watchers and protect the players. The derision that the Watchers have for the Listeners is also apparent in Martyn's LLSMP finale lore. Additionally, in his lore vod, Martyn says that Listeners were trying (and were successful) to get the players away from the Watchers and that the server basically fled with the Listeners. So basically, I think the Watchers offered Jimmy--who is not powerful and not a fighter and is always walked over but wants to keep people safe--an opportunity to finally have a little power and do something about the Watchers. And he accepted.

This is also maybe the point to say that Martyn confirmed that there's a dark-light theme between the Watchers and Listeners, with the Watchers representing the shadows and the Listeners the light. Personally, though, I prefer to view them as more neutral-evil and neutral-good. I definitely think the Watchers are more malicious (which...is canon) and that the Listeners do more good. But I also think they're both these mysterious supernatural beings that are probably extremely disconnected from humans, and operate on a different moral code. The Watchers think of Martyn as having a feeble mind, and clearly feel above the players. The Listeners don't seem to have much lore about this, but they are also quite mysterious and communicate with the players (via books and mazes/underground rooms and things) in a similar way to the Watchers. Essentially, I think it adds a good depth to Jimmy if perhaps the Listeners aren't 100% good in the traditional sense--he made the choice to join them, in exchange for more power, and that means he has to live with/be complicit in whatever else happens.

Also, I view the Listeners as...less strict than the Watchers? I also like the headcanon that Grian ran away from the Watchers (although Martyn contradicts this in his lore vod, but I don't have to listen to him always so). I feel like he was expected to stay with them, and didn't come to Hermitcraft until he was already free of them (which means in this headcanon, the Watchers would have come back for him before 3rd Life. do with this as you will.)

Jimmy, on the other hand, I feel like has the privilege of being the Listeners' field agent, so to speak. He's free to join other servers and be with his friends, as long as he reports to them as necessary and is available to carry out whatever they need. After all--both Grian and Jimmy were technically taken after the dragon fight on Evo, but only one of them actually came back and could see his friends again. Also, I feel like Martyn absolutely knows Jimmy is a Listener (Martyn was the other person the Listeners were planning on giving a mission too, although he never sees them.) cc!Martyn said in his lore vod that c!Martyn wasn't intended to be a Listener, just one of the ones who fled with them. I like to think he's just human and is like "well my best friend is a god now so I guess I'll help him" lol. However, the Listeners are pretty private and frequently tell their chosen ones to not tell anyone else about their missions, so I feel like it maaaaybe isn't common knowledge to other people. (Unlike Grian, where the entire server of Evo was told that he had joined the Watchers.)

Anyway, I think I'm going to end this here, but tbh I uh. I actually have more. I didn't even get to my headcanons on Watcher powers/Listener powers. I also talked about Evo more than 3L/LL here, but that's because I don't really want to give away anything about my fanfic plans. I also haven't spent nearly as much time yet analyzing all this lore into the final, finished version of LLSMP compared to the amount of time I've spent coming up with headcanons for my canon-divergent AU haha. thank u for asking me about this <333333 i have so much brainrot <3

i made a thread on twitter about this but i've been thinking about vanilla vs royal i cant handle how happy i am that royal has made ppl like akechi more, not just for "hes hot" reasons bc ppl love that but winning over reddit* folks who dislike many fanon takes for being too wooby,

not that i particularly care for Wooby bc ive been in fandom for ages and i like seeing ppl happy - i know theres a certain degree of allowance when it comes to twisting canon characterization for content, because you're the content creator, its in your hands and cmon- 

but especially with royal i think akechi's serious edge "won over a lot of people" who can now respect him for how he approached refusing the dream world, i think thats something they can understand and appreciate - ESPECIALLY when a lot of ppl's beef with vanilla akechi was "daddy doesnt love me boo hoo" which is a GROSS misunderstanding/simplification of his EXTREMELY complex character, which was barely covered or etc bc of vanilla's horrid writing -- over all! its not JUST him - BUT, royal provided such a good opportunity to show off akechi's character, through giving him more screentime and VERY IMPORTANTLY: Plot Relevance like how, say mementos mission shows off joker's need to be helpful bc hes a deep-feeling person, or scramble showing off haru and makoto and the other thieves by drawing them against the new characters to compare and contrast and give them Time to BE, - royal gave akechi time to recover from the frankly AWFUL vanilla narrative decision to shoot and shove him off like chopped liver and never mention him again, so that many ppl's impression of akechi goro was of an incomprehensible, annoying character who blew up and then acted like he dont knowww know bodaay haghnaghnahgna   

i joke but SERIOUSLY a bad first AND last impression, REALLY... 

ahh. im just surprised !! every time someone says they like him or that they disliked him earlier but dont post-royal or etc etc it always takes me by surprise even after all this time !! it makes me very happy -though even as i focus on how happy i am that people like his character, even streamers talking about his ass (what ass... ... cindy thats bone) or etc-  i shouldnt, but i still count it as a sort of win because my standards are so low ;-;.. i dont like sexualizing characters (of any gender or sexuality, dont worry ^-^'') but the point of it all is that the amount of stannery is .. stunning i think, from all ends of the fandom, when i think about how nervous vanilla felt to me. if im wording this all right.

-- that being said. obviously there are ppl who still dont like him, VEHEMENTLY, and everyone gets so passionate about him and everything that tension and fights erupt very very quickly - it makes me wonder what about royal didnt hit with them, but hit with other people, in a Genuinely Curious kind of way. not that im not suuper passionate about goroboying, because, i am !! royal makes me very happy and i stay out of fights as best as i can because i know, ACUTELY, how PAINFUL it is to have a hyperfixation broken. nauseous furious shaking heart aching - its heartbreak !! i'd rather die before i inflicted a pain like that on someone. + id rather remember something for the love i felt for it than the harm.

(though while i'm here, people who were in the "# p5r spoilers" tag remember what happened a little while ago shortly after royal jpn came out , though that's for a whole other post about the fascinating history/sociology of that particular event, 👁✨)

5. Fave pose?WELL, jonathan’s is a classic, but i’m pretty fond of giorno’s and josuke’s too!!

7. Fave line?there’s SO many iconic jojo lines, i can’t pick one, but some of my favorites are giorno: “we should steal 100 cars”, jotaro’s whole “that’s a nice watch” thing, and every dumbshit thing joseph says. on a more serious note, polnareff’s line about how “the third wish came true” in the judgement episodes always fucking destroys me

14. Fave thing about the Jojo series?again, so many things to choose from here, but one of my favorites is the overarching theme of legacy and bloodlines. i love how each part focuses on another member of the joestar legacy overcoming their own hardships and carrying on the family tradition of going on a bizarre adventure (ha) and defeating some great evil. adding onto that, i love how each jojo part is so different, how each jojo is in a completely new setting with a totally new cast, and yet araki always manages to make it feel like jojo (having characters from previous parts helps, and also makes me incredibly happy, but my point still stands)

18. Least fave fight and why?Hands down the alessei fight, for two big reasons.  first off - the wasted potential of including a de-aging villain and then NOT having your older character from a previous part fight him and temporarily age back to his original Look is unbelievable.  im gonna be bitter about old man joseph not turning back into hot young part 2 joseph in the alessei fight until the day i die.  with all that said, though, i think it’d be okay if the actual fight was decent enough. which brings me to my second big issue: it was terrible. de-aging polnareff isn’t a problem (and having jotaro not recognize him at all was hilarious, frustrating and entirely in-character all at once) but everything after that is fucking awful. everything with fucking. baby polnareff shoving his face in that woman’s boobs was disgusting and terrible and everything about those two episodes was The Worst, Ever. the very end with baby jotaro ora-ora-ing alessei was great, but not enough to make up for the garbage before it

19. Least fave thing about the Jojo fandom?ignoring the usual Nasty Shit (bc all fandoms have That Nasty Shit, made by Nasty People, so it’s not exactly an issue specific to jojo) my absolute least favorite thing from the jjba fandom is the characterizations of jotaro and kakyoin, both separate and as a couple. my main problem with it is that, due to their lack of a relationship in canon, nearly all content with the two of them (primarily shipping stuff, but also some non-shipping stuff) includes a LOT of fanon shit.  and this wouldn’t bother me - if the fanon was, y’know, derived/inferred from canon material, or if it was, in any possible way, in-character or accurate for either of them. it’s not. there’s a lot of heteronormativity issues surrounding a lot of their content (portraying kakyoin as ‘the girl’ and jotaro as ‘the man’, and all the bad stuff that comes from that), and. yeah i could go on but none of it’s in character and it’s real fucking depressing to me, bc jotaro gets other content from other parts, but all we get for kakyoin is. this. and it’s ridiculously out of character and lowkey Bad in a lot of ways. plus, to me, their relationship isn’t all that interesting in the first place; imo there’s not a Ton of potential there, and there’s so many other incredible canon relationships - both in part 3 (coughAVPOLcough), and in other parts - the fandom could be focusing on, but instead they’ve gotta focus on jota//kak. thanks guys. (another aspect of this ship i don’t like, bc i love to complain, is: i hate when people draw/write an au of jotaro and kakyoin raising jolyne, bc in canon she was raised by her mother and this au completely ignores jolyne���s mom....like araki already doesn’t treat his female characters That Great and now y’all gotta do this? cmon)

22. Do you prefer stands or hamon/ripple?LISTEN.....hamon holds a very special place in my heart, but there’s just SO much more potential with stands. sorry hamon, i love you, but. yeah, stands lmao

25. Stand ability you think wasn’t used well enough in the series?first and foremost on THIS list is kakyoin, who should’ve kept his possession ability and also had at least one more fight tbh. next: okuyasu. my beautiful son. he deserved at least another fight, maybe more - and yeah, he barely ever used his stand, which bums me out. and..uhh...there’s definitely more.....i mean i wish joseph used hermit purple more in general, so. yeah. tbh there’s not as much wasted potential here as i’d think, so good for u araki

26. Stand ability you thought didn’t suit the character it belonged to?i can’t..really.....think of anyone...?? like no one comes to mind immediately. to me, they all fit pretty damn well, in one way or another. the only one i can really name might be abbacchio, since he’s such an angry, bitter guy, and then he has a non-combat stand. that’s it? idk araki does this part very well imo

33. Have you played any of the Jojo games? Which is your favourite?i’ve played a little of eyes of heaven (at a friend’s house) and. well. see the thing is, the gameplay in eoh is..good? but really only if you’re doing single player.  the fact that there’s no two-player option due to the 3D stages is really unfortunate and kinda awkward when two people wanna play. plus the graphics sometimes aren’t the best, let’s be real. but despite all that, eoh is still and will probably always be my favorite game, despite barely playing it and never going through the story mode, for one sole reason: the plot. the idea of a game dedicated solely to bringing back all of the dead characters from each part?? and also having all the different characters from all the different parts interact????? as someone who hates character death and adores jjba part crossovers, i fucking LOVE it. it’s honestly so ideal and plays directly to my tastes, so eoh is very beloved to me

35. A character you relate to?Okuyasu and Jotaro, my boys. just like okuyasu, i’m very emotional/cry a lot, enjoy punching things, and also i’m dumb and gay.  with jotaro, i’m also ace, i have a resting bitch face, i (again) enjoy punching things, and in general...idk, it’s hard to sum up kujo jotaro in just words, but just know that i relate to him, like, so much

37. A character you don’t understand the hype over?i don’t understand how people legitimately like kishibe rohan, it confuses and angers me

38. Characters you wish could have interacted with each other?god where do i BEGIN.  i wish jonathan could’ve met joseph, caesar, and also smokey, i wish the squads from parts 3 and 4 could’ve met speedwagon, i wish jotaro and lisa lisa met, i wish caesar met the crewsaders, i wish polnareff met the duwang gang (particularly josuke and okuyasu), i wish josuke, giorno, and jolyne all met each other, i wish the duwang gang and passione met, i wish jotaro met giorno/passione, etc. etc. i could literally go on for hours, the sheer amount of wasted opportunities as far as characters from different parts meeting each other thanks to araki’s dislike of providing ‘’’’fanservice’’’’ in this specific way is criminal and i will be bitter about it for the rest of my miserable gay life, thanks for coming to my TED talk

41. A relationship between two characters that you really like?AGAIN, WHERE DO I BEGIN. ok some relationships i love are: jonathan and speedwagon, joseph and smokey, joseph and erina, joseph and caesar, joseph and jotaro, JOTARO AND POLNAREFF, polnareff and abdul (sobs), polnareff and kakyoin, josuke and okuyasu, josuke and jotaro, josuke and koichi, rohan and koichi, giorno and buccellati, giorno and mista, jolyne and hermes, johnny and gyro, AND gappy and yasuho. yeah. but imo if i had to pick one, jotaro and polnareff’s friendship in part 3 is one of my favorite relationships in all of jjba, mainly because at the beginning jotaro so clearly doesn’t get along with people and polnareff is loud and annoying and you’d never expect them to become friends AND YET they become BEST friends and their respect and love for each other is so obvious and effortless and it’s so clear how comfortable they are around each other and i just really, really love their friendship ok. (honorable mentions: joseph and caesar, and josuke and okuyasu: two more relationships i could rant about for literal hours)

42. What was the most bizarre moment in Jojo for you?really hitting me with the hard questions today aren’t we. well uhh honestly at this point i’m a bit numb to jjba’s weirdness (not in a bad way, it’s just that when something Really Strange happens i’m not super shocked or anything), but it sure was. interesting. to see stroheim come back from literally getting blown to smithereens in battle tendency. also: killer queen just, fucking, sliding open its abs to reveal stray car just chilling inside its torso? surreal.

44. Saddest Jojo moment?y’all really can’t let up huh. i mean for me, personally, the thing that Fucked Me Up was abdul’s second death + polnareff’s fake-out death + iggy’s death. all that at once, i just. man. there was a lot of tears watching that. otherwise, caesar and kakyoin’s deaths were painful as all hell, and jonathan’s was too. okuyasu’s wasn’t as much, for me, because i knew he didn’t die for real (i was actually super looking forward to that whole thing, bc how often do we get angst That Good in canon?? and davpro maxing it out like that??? fucking beautiful), but it was still sad. uhh yeah that’s it so far (i’m halfway through part 5 lmao). honorable mention to part 6 for fucking me up in advance, i already know it’s gonna fucking obliterate me, so, yeah, thanks araki, i’ll forward u the medical bill

50. If you had a stand, what would you name it?my stand would be 「FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH」, not on account of me being a fan of the band or anything, it’s just so fucking awesome
