Imagine teen Tommy calling teen Billy “dorkasaurus rex” like he did when they were little… I would cry a river from the adorableness.

well hello everyone!! after the post earlier today I thought it was a good time to properly introduce myself! my name's jane, my pronouns are she/her, and I'm in my late 30s, so I've got that goin' for me! for over a decade I grew medicinal cannabis by day and bartended by night. I have an amazing fiance who I've been fortunate to have at my side for almost 15 years now, and we've spent the past 12 of those years raising the sweetest & cutest puppy. to say I'm obsessed with my little dorkasaurus would be putting it very mildly🐕
I've been writing and building complex worlds in my head and then later, notebooks and apps, since I can remember. the first story I wrote and finished was called the Teddy Bear from Hell, so I've obviously always been drawn to the darker and more twisted elements of stories.
I draw heavy inspiration from horror (right now I'm more into body horror and cosmic dread) and unknowable elements of supernatural/paranormal. music also plays a huuuge part in my life and how I write. for Bad Witch specifically, I drew lots of inspo from —takes deep breath— Practical Magic, Hellraiser, Lorde's Melodrama, Friends from College, the Craft, synthpop, Gossip Girl OG, TR0N: Legacy [movie & soundtrack], Alexander McQueen, St Elmo's Fire, Suspiria, vaporwave, Rocky Horror, and the magic school that shall no longer be named.
anywho like I keep saying, I'm sooo excited to finally be sharing this story with everyone! next up, I'm focusing on getting the new demo out and going forward from there. I'll be following the major arcana so there will be a prologue and 21 chapters. I don't want to make too many plans about how and when the chapters will be released, but I'll be working on it full-time so it should be pretty consistent but I'll have a better idea after the first few chapters are in the rearview. I'm rambling again but I just wanted to thank y'all for joining me on this wicked ride 🖤

6 & 18 for levtsukki pls
TY FOR THE ASK LYZ LET'S GET IT
6. What is their favorite feature of their partner’s?:
for tsukki (not that he'd ever say it out loud) i think it'd be lev's face!! particularly his eyes. lev is super expressive about EVERYTHING and tsukki really likes just watching him when they're out bc lev's got this way of lighting up when he's excited and happy. also this means he makes the funniest reactions when pranked LMAO.
for lev i think it'd be tsukki's hands, especially since tsukki has a habit of fidgeting with them without realizing it. lev just thinks it's a really cute habit (and it's also a tell when tsukki is nervous about something, which is super helpful) and also LOVES holding tsukki's hands. plus, knuckle/palm/back-of-the-hand kisses!! given for good luck before matches when lev can, whether it's post-timeskip sendai frogs or back when they're still in high school
18. Who leaves little notes in the other one's lunch? (Bonus: what does it usually say?):
i think they both do, but it started out as a joke/on accident. lev put one in tsukki's lunch bc a coworker told him this stupid cheesy pick-up line he thought tsukki would like (i actually did google museum-related pickup lines for this but they were all terrible so i shall spare you the details) and it made tsukki snort through his bottle of green tea when he opened it during his break. the next day lev gets a note in HIS lunch saying 'you are such a dorkasaurus. i love you' plus a lil doodle of a dino with lev's face on it and they haven't stopped since. most of the time it's silly and goofy and some of the time it's honest and vulnerable (especially if they know the other had a rough day) but it's their little thing that makes them happy!!
(every single note gets saved btw. they keep it hidden from each other until tsukki finds lev's recycled cookie tin full of them and then shows lev he keeps his in a jar on his desk)

SPECIAL DELIVERY ⸻ @babygirlhq
RECIPIENT ⸻ TRISTAN GOODMAN
daphne is well and truly preoccupied, the sway in her ‘step’ all the more pronounced as she’s accompanied by rolling wheels at her feet instead of just her usual heels. her pondering expression is punctuated by the index resting ever so acutely at the base of her chin as her absent pacing continues, one of her favorite magitek robots bounding through the air proclaiming ‘thinking too hard’ on repeat as if a blaring alarm that could never be properly silenced. “i know, puu, i know,” the reporter begins after a longer beat of silence from her end. “it just doesn’t make any sense. you would think —” her words are stopped short at the appearance of a messy-haired mumbler that was her adorable little hometown adversary.
“tristie!” she bolts from her stupor, leaping ( or rather skating ) suspiciously happily in his direction, though her face switches to something more serious than expected as she grips his hands in hers. “perfect timing, you little dorkasaurus! you’re just the guy i need." she offers, as if this arrangement hadn't been preplanned just a short while ago and their meeting now had been entirely coincidental. "you have to tell me the truth okay —” her voice lowers, vaguely conspiratorial in nature ( though that did seem to be the norm for someone like her ) as her glasses slip along the bridge of her nose. “the wiz-man — he’s totally your daddio, right? was it a secret love child scenario? does rookie know? the people are demanding answers and i swear if you lie to me about it —” the floating robot seems to interject here with a more devilish, and vaguely threatening expression. or as much as it can muster given its usual cuteness.
Tumblr media
“ .. oh also," the reporter starts again, seeming to sidestep the earlier part of their conversation momentarily. "we can grab pudding or something somewhere, can't we? i seem to have run out somehow and i'm totally craving some serious sugar, you know.” while she'd normally prefer caffeine and sugar, given how many cups she'd already consumed in this later hour and how energized she already seemed, she clearly thought better of the idea.

I hate the way you talk to me, the way you cut your hair. I hate the way you drive my car, I hate it when you stare. I hate your big dumb combat boots and the way you read my mind. I hate you so much, it makes me sick; it even makes me rhyme. I hate it, I hate the way you're always right, I hate it when you lie. I hate it when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry. I hate it when you're not around, and the fact that you didn't call. But mostly, I hate the way I don't hate you. Not even close, not even a little bit. Not even at all.

Understandable honestly. I’m just a little bit too selfish. And online doesn’t have that tangibility the real world does, so it’s really easy to brush things off.

Stuck in Westview
Pairing: Peter Maximoff x Reader
Request by Anon: Okay, okay, so I had an idea and idk you'll do it but it's worth a shot. Plant mutation reader x Peter where they both get stuck in Westview? I haven't really thought about it past that, so the rest is up to you!
A/n: The more I wrote this one the less I liked how it was turning out but I didn’t want to leave you hanging so I tried my best. I hope you like it.

You didn’t remember much when the two of you first arrived in Westview. But you were with Peter and he seemed to know where he was going so you felt fine about it. You were ecstatic when the two of you walked up to the door and Wanda answered it. You’ve always wanted to meet Peter’s sister and now that you were, you felt like you were in a dream. Actually the whole time you’ve been in Westview has felt like a dream.
“You alright baby?” Peter’s voice breaks you out of whatever trance you were in and you look at him.
“Yeah, I’m good just lost in thought I guess, sorry.”
“You’re fine dear.” Wanda speaks as Peter wraps an arm around your shoulders and Vision comes down with a blanket and some pillows. “I uh, hope the couch will be fine for the two of you. The spare room still isn’t ready; we weren’t exactly expecting company.”
“The couch will be just fine Wanda.”
“Yeah sis, just gives us an excuse to be pressed against each other all night.” Wanda scoffs at Peter before bidding the two of you a goodnight.
“She’s nice.” You tell Peter as the two of you settle down to sleep.
“Yeah. I’m glad the two of you get along.” He yawns and kisses the top of your head as he pulls you into his chest.
In the morning you wake up well before Peter like normal. Though it was more the afternoon than the morning, you may always wake up before your boyfriend but you did end up adopting his poor sleep schedule. You lay next to him relishing in his warmth for a while before getting up and making your way into the kitchen for some cereal. Tommy comes down first and heads to the kitchen before Billy comes down dressed in a costume.
“Halloween’s a magical holiday. All about family, friends, and the thrill of getting to be someone else for a day.” You think that he’s speaking to you at first but very quickly realize it’s like he’s talking to an imaginary audience. Your eyebrows scrunch together in confusion as you watch him from your spot on the couch at Peter's feet. You shake your head assuming it was just a kid thing and pick up your bowl to put it in the sink. “Where’s your costume Tommy?”
“This is my costume. I’m the cool twin.”
“Then what does that make me?”
“Hmm, a dorkasaurus rex.” You hold in the chuckle that wants to escape as the joke seems to fly over Billy’s head as he tells his twin that it's not a real dinosaur. You high five Tommy when Billy leaves the kitchen with a smile before he follows his brother. The two of them bicker about Billy being scared of Peter not realizing that they’ve woken him up.
“Blood is thicker than water! I show you!” You laugh as you watch Peter chase the kids around from the kitchen doorway. When Wanda comes down the stairs complaining about the noise you walk over to them and take your place next to Peter, who immediately wraps an arm around you bringing you closer to him.
“I’m a Sokovian fortune teller.”
“Wow. That is so…lame.” You elbow him in the ribs when his statement causes Tommy to change his own from rad to lame.
“I think you look great! If you didn’t have a husband I’d leave this doof and try getting with the better twin.” Wanda blushes slightly and laughs at your words.
While Peter and Wanda talk about old Halloween’s you follow the twins to the couch to play video games with them. When Billy starts to talk to the invisible audience once more you look at him confused again before looking to see if Tommy noticed it too but he’s either too focused on the game or doesn’t see anything weird about it. Peter makes his way over eventually chuckling at something that happened. You give him your spot on the floor and sit behind him on the couch.
“Hey babe you wanna go get 4 sodas from the fridge and we’ll teach these rugrats how to shotgun?” You just shrug and nod before getting up. “Get out of here, get out of here.” Peters trying to slap Tommy’s controller out of his hands to distract him as you juggle the four cans to the couch. You hand them out to the three boys before taking your spot again. Peter makes the holes in the bottom of their cans so they don’t hurt themselves trying and goes to do it for you just to find yours already done. “Alright when I give the signal you bring the hole to your mouth and open the can.” He makes sure they understand before exclaiming a ‘go’. Wanda and Vision soon start to fight and Billy once again speaks to the audience and Peter and you share a look after he scrunches his eyebrows up and looks to see if Tommy’s reacting.
You must have zoned out after that though because the next thing you know Peters scaring Wanda at the door and Visions gone. When did they talk about shaving cream in water balloons you find yourself wondering as you overhear the conversation. It must’ve just happened when you were in your head again.
“You don’t even have a costume.” Peter scoffs and then speeds off somewhere with Tommy to return in matching costumes that go with his power perfectly. “If I see any funny business, I am going to magic you into a pickled herring.”
“Y/n I got you a costume too!” Peter speeds in front of you and drops a bag in your lap.
“What is it?”
“Just go put it on.” He pulls you to your feet and starts to push you towards the stairs. You can’t help but laugh after you get into the bathroom and open the bag up to find a Poison Ivy costume. Once you finish putting it on you notice part of an ivy plant still in the bag with a note from Peter reading ‘To make it more realistic ;)-P’.
“Are you boys ready?” Wanda’s voice greets your ears as you make your way back downstairs.
“Yeah mom.” The twins speak at the same time and rush up to their mom who places her hands on their shoulders.
“Pietro, you better not be bringing any shaving cream filled water balloons!” You don’t dwell long on the fact that Wanda’s been calling him Pietro, he’s already told you that when he and his mom moved to the states she had him start going by Peter. And now only his family really calls him Pietro even though they’ve gotten into the habit of using Peter instead.
“I’m not! See empty handed.” The sound of your laughter as Peter appeared in front of the family holding his hands out as proof drew all of their attention to you. “You look great babe. I dig the crown thing you’ve got going on.” You had decided to grow the ivy around your head and then around the rest of your body randomly from there.
“Thanks.” You blush a bit at the attention as you join the four of them in front of the door.
“Woah aunt Y/n, who are you supposed to be?” Tommy asks as he takes in all the green.
“Have you guys really never seen a Batman show or read the comics? She’s Poison Ivy also known as Mother Nature, it fits Y/n a lot considering her power.”
“Her power?” Wanda asks as Billy asks you what it is.
“I can control plants.” You shrug it off because it’s not a big deal, there were plenty of cooler mutations than yours anyway (even if Peter would yell at you for thinking that).
“That’s so rad!” Peter high fives Tommy in agreement excited that his nephew likes it as much as he does.
“How did you get it?” Before you can tell Wanda that you were born with it, Peter gives her some bogus story that’s really similar to Poison Ivy's origin story. You’re confused because it doesn’t make sense for him to lie about it but you don’t have a chance to correct him before he’s taking your hand and pulling you out of the house to ‘get this party started’.
You watch smiling as Tommy and Billy race from house to house to see who can get the most candy and tune into what Wanda and Peter were talking about in time to hear him say she’s testing him. Why would she be testing him, for what?
“Hey, it’s cool. I know I look different.”
“Why do you...look different?” Look different? You turn to really study and look at Peter to try to see what she means. The only thing that’s different is that his hair is more blonde but that’s about it, it’s not some major change or anything. When the twins come back ready to keep moving down the street Peter brings you into a side hug and places a kiss on your temple before running with them to get more candy. Though you notice that Billy holds onto Tommy and Peter doesn’t even try to hold onto the backs of their necks. What happened to whiplash?
As everything starts to feel off to you and you try to figure things out your head starts to feel hazy and it’s like your body goes on autopilot as you strike up conversation with Wanda. It’s like an out of body experience as you basically just watch the conversation happen without knowing what’s being said. You feel so lost and empty right in this moment and it only fades a little when Wanda starts to talk to someone else. You don’t fully snap back into it until Peter laces his hand in yours again.
“Pete,” you say to him when Wanda and the kids walk ahead of you, “I feel strange.”
“What kind of strange?” He places a hand on your forehead to check if you’re warm. “You don’t have a fever. Are you queasy? Do you wanna go back to the house?”
“No, it’s not that I feel sick. I just, I don’t know how to explain it. I feel like a prisoner in my own body.”
“I think I know what you mean. It happens very suddenly right? And then something snaps you out of it and you feel better?”
“Yeah that’s it.”
“Uncle P are you coming?” Tommy’s voice pulls the two of your attention to them and Peter plasters a smile on his face.
“Sure am little dude, just had to tell your aunt how hot she looks again!” He pulls you behind him as he catches up with his family. The five of you make your way to the town square scare as it starts to become night.
“It’s so lame that you’re making them return the candy.” Peter says after a moment of silence passes from when Wanda scolded the twins for stealing it in the first place.
“I can’t believe what a bad influence you are?” You start to think about her words, you know it’s been a while since they’ve seen eachother but surely this is what Peter acted like growing up. It’s definitely how he’s acted the whole time you knew him.
“It’s what you wanted isn’t it?”
“What happened to your accent?”
“What happened to yours?” You watch as they seem to have a mini showdown challenging the other. “Details are fuzzy, man. I got shot like a chump on the street for no reason at all and next thing I know I hear you callin me. I knew you needed me.” His words don’t sit well with you, they don’t sound right but something in the back of your head makes you trust them.
“Uncle P, guess what?” The twins run up and semi break the tension in the air with their excitement.
“They’ve got full size candy bars a few blocks up. Can we go Mom?” Tommy then speeds away and comes back with some of the bars in his hand. You and Peter look at eachother shocked and you can see the excitement on his face that his nephew has the same power as him.
“Right on, little dude! Chip off the old Maximoff block. You got super speed!”
“I do?”
“Yeah!” The two of them high five with big excited smiles on their faces and you stand back with an adoring one. Peter may be a bad influence but he’s really just so good with kids. When Tommy starts to speed around whooping in joy you step closer to Peter and wrap your arms around his stomach smiling up at him.
“If you’re gonna break the sound barrier at least take your brother with you.”
“Really?”
“Yes really. And please just remember-”
“Don’t go past Ellis Avenue. We know mom.” After the twins run off and Wanda yells after them to be careful the three of you continue on your way to the town square where kids are running rampant and hay bales have been set up.
“This is so nice.” You say as you look around.
“Isn’t it?” Wanda responds and smiles over at you.
“Damn it, if Westview, New Jersey isn’t charming as hell.”
“I know that you guys must think that I’ve gone full soccer mom. But it really is nice right?” The three of you sit down on one of the hay bales in the center of town square. You smile and agree with her as Peter brings your legs over one of his and squeezes your thigh.
“I think mom and dad would’ve loved it.” You want to speak up and ask if Wanda knew about Erik but suddenly you couldn’t speak, it was like your lips were being forced closed. You started to feel that sense of being a prisoner again and as if he could sense your panic Peter squeezes your thigh again as he and Wanda talk about the kids in Westview. “I’m impressed seriously, it’s a big upgrade from giving people nightmares and shooting red wiggly woos out of your hand.” Leave it to Peter for being impressed when his family members do something people consider wrong. “I’m not some stranger, and I’m not your husband. You can talk to me, and Y/n too. She’s one of the kindest people I’ve ever met.”
“I don’t know how I did it. I only remember feeling completely alone. Empty. I just...endless nothingness.” She looks away and sniffles a bit before looking back over and gasping while covering her face.
“Are you okay?” You finally find your lips free in time to worry about Wanda and ask if she’s alright.
“I’m fine.”
“Uh huh.” Peter glances over at you as he hums not believing her.
“Mom!” The twins then rush over with Billy yelling for her over and over again.
“What is it Billy?”
“I hear dad in my head. He’s in trouble. I don’t understand. What’s happening to me?”
“I think Billy might have powers too.” You whisper to Peter as the two of you get up and walk over to the trio.
“Where is he? Where’s your dad?”
“Hey, don’t sweat it sis. It’s not like your dead husband can die twice.” Wanda’s quick to force him into the fake graveyard after he speaks.
“Oh my god!” You run over to Peter as Wanda’s attention goes back to her kids.
“God why did I say that?” Peter’s rubbing his head when you make it to him.
“Peter, Peter I think we should go.” You see Wanda getting ready to use her power again before looking back at Peter. “Now!” He grabs onto you and runs back to Wanda’s street. The hold that was in your mind is gone now and you can remember getting pulled into this city before not remembering anything. “Shit, Peter I don’t think we belong here.”
“I think you’re right baby. Let’s find a way out of here.”

Subtitles: Episode 6, All-New Halloween Spooktacular!
Tumblr media
Subtitles Masterlist
Summary: Halloween is afoot in Westview and it’s a must to partake in the festivities. Unfortunately, things are a little rocky in the Maximoff house with Wanda’s brother Pietro visiting, [Y/N] moving in, and Vision and Wanda’s rough patch continuing. Can Halloween relieve some tension at home or will things continue to crumble?
Word count: 7,760
Warnings: None! Just maybe a possibly poorly made Rocky Horror Picture Show reference because I’ve never actually seen it, lol. Also a slight change in format because I just realized now that Tumblr wasn’t taking my page breaks between scenes; sorry for that in previous episodes.

~~~
    Living in Westview after having your memories partially restored was a very strange experience and you quickly realized why Vision would “turn people back off” after jogging their memories; things just didn’t quite make sense when you had the combined knowledge of the outside world and the bubbled Westview and it was almost more confusing and uncomfortable to experience it this way. For example, you couldn’t be sure whether it had been days or weeks since you’d regained your memories and Wanda and Vision had decided to have you move in with them, or why all of Westview had changed from an 80s aesthetic to a 90s one. What was especially weird was how people would randomly stop and talk into space as if they were talking to a camera in a TV show, but there was nothing to see when you looked in that direction. With your memories not fully intact even now, it hadn’t done much to help your and Vision’s investigation into what was going on in Westview or outside of it either—before whatever Wanda had done to Westview, you were a bit of a recluse and had suffered dementia in the past, so what memories had been returned was mostly irrelevant—and Wanda, who was still perfectly happy with living in almost ignorant bliss, wasn’t much help. The two of you continued seeking out the strange and trying to put pieces together but it was becoming increasingly difficult and the chaos of making space for you, Wanda’s brother returning, and now Halloween wasn’t helping.
    There was also the desire to ignore it all and go back to playing house. Like now, as you were heading back into the house from the backyard—you had been finishing up repairs on Vision’s failed attempt at building the kids a treehouse—when you heard Tommy and Billy chatting. Their voices faded in further as you opened the back door.
    “Wrong!” Tommy was saying into space. When you looked, there was still no person, no camera like in a sitcom. “Halloween’s about candy. And scaring people, but mostly candy.”
    “Where’s your costume, Tommy?” Billy asked his brother. As you stepped inside, he looked over Tommy’s head at you and smiled.
    “This is my costume. I’m the cool twin.”
    You put your hands on your hips and made an exaggerated surprised face in Billy’s direction, pretending as if this was the first time you’ve ever heard Tommy tease his brother. Billy’s smile widened slightly before he looked away, acting like you weren’t there except for a glance or two. Tommy didn’t seem to notice your presence quite yet.
    “What does that make me?” Billy said.
    Tommy hummed and cocked his head to one side; you could almost picture the flashback going on in his head before he looked back at Billy and replied matter-of-factly, “A dorkasaurus rex.”
    “Not a real dinosaur,” Billy said with a scowl, then went back to his task of scooping his and Tommy’s lunch into bowls.
    “And mean,” you piped up.
    Tommy squealed and jumped away from where you were standing behind him. He spun around and almost flung himself into the kitchen counter but jerked away just quickly enough. Then he stumbled back in the opposite direction, resulting in running into your legs. Or, he would have, if you hadn’t caught him by the shoulders and stopped his floundering. He looked up and you with wide eyes.
    “Oh, hey, [Y/N],” he said casually, trying to cover up his embarrassment with coolness.
    “Heya, kiddo,” you chirped back with a smile. You ran a hand over his hair and leaned down to give him a peck on the forehead. He responded with a grossed-out face and a “Blech!” so you decided to mess up his hair by ruffling it. You grinned as he flailed his way to freedom, then pointed and said, “Don’t be a little shit to your brother.”
    Tommy grinned, most likely because of your use of a curse word, and attempted to flatten his hair back in place.
    “[Papa/Mama/Nopa]!” Billy, who was much less like his uncle and much more like his parents than Tommy, was perfectly fine with getting a kiss on the cheek after trotting over and throwing himself into your waiting arms, despite still making a face when you did so. He laughed when you hauled him into your arms and cradled him like a baby, something you didn’t get to do nearly enough before they’d aged themselves up, and happily kicked his legs.
    Tommy rushed over to be included and you adjusted to holding Billy around the stomach with one arm and picked his brother up with your other. Holding them both with their backs against your chest now, you spun around a few times and the boys laughed and kicked their feet out. You were careful to swing them high enough off the ground that they wouldn’t hit anything and hollered, “My boysss!”
    Then a snore came from the living room, reminding you that there was still someone in the house that didn’t wake up at a reasonable hour. You made a cringing face at the twins as you stopped and they covered their giggling mouths while you put them down. They scrambled back over to the kitchen counter to finish getting their food while you paused and looked over at the couch with hands on your hips. “He sure knows how to sleep, huh?”
    Pietro Maximoff had shown up on Wanda and Vision’s doorstep the same night you’d regained your powers, the same night that they’d asked you to move in. As soon as you’d seen him in the doorway from your blanket nest on the couch, something about him was off. You were aware that you weren’t supposed to know him yet by Westview rules, so it wasn’t all that strange that he didn’t recognize you from Sokovia—or maybe you just hadn’t been as memorable to him as you had to his sister, which would make sense since he wasn’t the one you were kissing and sleeping in the same bed as—but what mainly bothered you was that the face in front of you and the face in your memories didn’t match… at all. Westview’s Pietro was a completely different person than the one you remembered from a HYDRA testing base, you had been sure of it, although now that you’d lived with the man for however long it’s been, this new face was becoming interchangeable with the old one in your mind. Not only was the confusion about his appearance weird but there was something about his energy that was just wrong; when he’d introduced himself to you that night, you’d seen and felt yellow, burnt at the edges by a soul-sucking black, radiating from him.
    All this to note and nothing to come of it so far. Pietro was a bit of a troublemaking deadbeat, albeit a good-natured guy, who slept on the couch and didn’t wake up until anywhere from noon to four in the afternoon. He got along well with the twins, especially Tommy, and other than seeming disgruntled about him taking up space, Vision didn’t seem too bothered by his presence. Wanda didn’t seem threatened or bothered by Pietro being around at all either, except for worrying about him causing trouble; she hadn’t reacted any type of way to him showing up on her doorstep that night at all, other than inviting him inside, which was the only reason you were able to relax around him for the time being.
    Tommy and Billy walked past you with bowls in their hands. You gave them each a pat on the head as they went and only stopped Billy to complement the Halloween costume that he wore. He smiled and asked what you were wearing and you were surprised to realize that you hadn’t yet come up with one. You told him to keep a suggestion in mind and sent him after his brother, who was looking on at the snoring mess of a couch-Pietro in admiration.
    “Man,” the longer-haired boy said, “he even snores cool.”
    You made a face. You weren’t so sure about that.
    “I’m gonna wake him up.”
    “Don’t!” Billy startled, holding his twin back with a hand on his chest.
    Tommy grinned. “You scared?”
    “He’s our uncle. Why would I be scared?”
    “‘Cause it’s four o’clock in the afternoon and you’re secretly afraid he’s a vampire.”
    “No, I’m not.”
    “Yes, you are.”
    You looked on at the bickering boys with mild amusement while you got yourself a fruit from the kitchen until movement from the couch drew your attention. Pietro, who was awake now, was slowly shifting around and getting into a sitting position. When he was where he could see you, he gave you a smirk that spelled out nothing but trouble, then winked. You rolled your eyes but stayed quiet.
    In less than a minute, Pietro went from tangled in his blanket on the couch to standing in front of Tommy and Billy, yelling something about blood. The boys unsurprisingly screamed, and then the three of them were running around the living room in Halloween-fueled chaos.
    You stood at the kitchen counter, cutting your fruit of choice into slices and unreactive other than a little smile toying at your lips.
    “Oh,” came a mildly irritated voice as Wanda descended the stairs from the house’s second floor, “somebody better be bleeding, broken, or on fire.”
    You attempted to catch a glimpse of her from your place in the kitchen but all you could see was a flash of a red cape. You grinned and hurried to finish slicing and clean up so you could join the others in the living room.
    “Whoa, Mom,” Billy said, “Are you old Red Riding Hood?”
    There was a moment of silence and you could easily picture the surprised look on your partner’s face before she responded, “No, I am not old Red Riding Hood. [Y/N]’s mother made my costume. Said something about a goddess…?”
    Just as you were coming around the corner with your bowl, Wanda trailed off and leaned in your direction for confirmation. You had to force yourself not to stare at the simple but delicious costume she wore, the form-fitting red unitard and pink leggings, for the sake of the other company in the room. Instead, you walked over and slipped an arm around her hips underneath the cape and gave her a nod. “Aphrodite, specifically. She was so excited to hear about my girlfriend that she just couldn’t help herself. Gorgeous and powerful costume for a gorgeous and powerful woman, yeah?” You paused to give Wanda’s shoulder a smooch and waggle your brows at her, much to the twins’ and Pietro’s grossed-out dismay, before you adjusted Wanda’s headpiece and continued, “This rendition of Aphrodite, I think, is actually from a drawing I did of her as a kid, because yes, I was never not a nerd. Mom was so focused on you that she practically forgot about me.”
    You knew that for the most part, the story wasn’t true. You knew that beyond the barrier of Westview, your mother was in so state to do such work, nor could she remember you if she wanted to, but something was unnaturally comforting about putting that aside for the time being.
    “Wow,” Pietro started, his tone unimpressed, “That is so…”
    “Rad!” Tommy exclaimed with a grin.
    “…lame.”
    “Lame.”
    Wanda huffed a bit.
    “If it means anything,” you said, pecking Wanda’s cheek, “I think it’s quite well-made.”
    Hidden from view behind her cape, you gave her hip a light pinch. That earned you a light slap on the wrist and a look that was equal parts warning and teasing.
    Pietro made a gagging noise. “I think it’s worse than the costumes Mom made us the year we got typhus.”
    You quirked a brow in Wanda’s direction but as Tommy had done earlier, she tilted her head and stared off into nowhere as she presumably thought back on the subject. Then she squinted and shook her head as she said, “That’s not exactly how I remember it.”
    Pietro nodded in understanding. “You probably suppressed a lot of the trauma.”
    Well, that was entirely out of left field. You tucked that away in the growing mental file titled “Why New Pietro is Weird.”
    Tommy, Billy, and Pietro then broke off into their own conversation. Tommy and Billy went to sit on the couch and eat their food and Pietro went to go get something of his own, while you and Wanda moved out of the way of the stairs.
    You took a slice of fruit and popped it into your mouth, then offered her one. She took off one of her long, red gloves and happily took it.
    “You do look just… very attractive in that costume of yours,” you said in a low voice after you finished your fruit.
    “Is that so?” Wanda gave you another flirty look and casually shimmied her bare shoulders at you and scooting a bit closer. “I can’t wait to see what both of my partners have in store for me.”
    You winced slightly but tried to cover it up with a questioning look and a tease. “Was that—? Is that—? Is this flirting, Mrs. Maximoff?”
    You couldn’t get anything past her.
“What was that look?” she said, then gasped. “No. [Y/N] [L/N], fashionista, lover of all things bright and colorful and weird, doesn’t have a Halloween costume?”
You glance away, embarrassed. “I’ve just been so busy with moving and getting my house on the market, and it’s been hectic here at home… I forgot! Oh, speaking of which—” You raised your voice a bit. “Billy, costume suggestion?”
“A wizard!” Billy chirped from his place on the couch where he and Tommy were now setting up a video game.
“A ninja!” Tommy suggested.
“A spy!” Pietro hollered as he walked back out of the kitchen with a bowl in hand, which he should in your direction. “By the way, sibling-in-law, mind super-sizing this?”
You scowled at him. “I very much do mind and that’s not at all how my power works, thanks.”
Tommy paused what he was doing on the couch and mumbled, “That would have been such a good idea…”
You rolled your eyes and turned back to Wanda with raised hands and a curious look as the boys settled in to their own world again. “Thoughts? Three ideas, right there.”
Wanda hummed thoughtfully and slowly looked you over. The way her eyes traveled down your body made you shiver.
“Or,” you said quieter, setting down your now-empty bowl on the table behind you and slinked your arms around Wanda’s waist, “I could just be a devotee that is very invested in their work with their goddess, who does their absolute best to follow Aphrodite’s wishes…” You paused and waggled your head a bit as you thought. “Or, you know, a scientist or something.”
Wanda hummed and her hands absentmindedly explored your chest. Before you could focus too much on the way heat followed the path of her fingers, she suddenly perked up and pulled them away to clap once and then waggle her pointer fingers at you. “I know!”
“Oh?” Even as you said it, you felt Wanda’s magic take effect on your current casual work outfit. While the magic wasn’t affecting your body at all, you could feel the tickling of magic and fabric twisting and brushing against your skin.
As you watched, your outdoor clothes transformed into a costume. The sleeves of the simple and somewhat dirtied T-shirt you wore twisted down the length of your arms until they ended at cuffs that were adjustable via silver buttons. The color of the shirt darkened and changed and became red and honey yellow plaid, and a line of usable silver buttons erupted down the center of the shirt’s front; the collar of the shirt flared and stretched into a folded collar of a button-up dress shirt. Not only did your shirt change but another layer appeared on top of it, this being a suede black and white dappled vest whose pattern looked like it was trying to mimic a cow while also trying to avoid infringing on said cow’s copyright. You felt a light pressure around your throat, then something bump against the base of your neck, and upon further investigation, you found a red handkerchief tied around your neck and a dark russet cowboy hat hanging from a leather tie. Your long shorts lengthened and changed color and material into denim jeans, accompanied by a thick leather belt with a large buckle, conveniently accented with a swirling design that involved a W and a V, and two gun holsters that were occupied by plastic versions of the weapon. Finally, on your feet appeared brown cowboy boots with golden spurs to match a golden, comically fake sheriff’s star pinned to your chest.
A couple of thoughts popped into your head as you examined your outfit. First, you couldn’t help but make the connection between the specific shades of red and yellow used on your outfit and the same shades that your partners’ powers took on, plus the WV brand attached to your waist; it was enough to make you snicker. The other thought was how familiar the costume looked, despite mild design changes.
“Am I a knockoff Woody from Toy Story?”
Wanda blinked. “Not… my intention but we did take the boys to see it a couple of weeks ago, so.” She shrugged, then brightened again. “What do you think, Sheriff?”
You leaned back on your heels and rested your hands on your belt—then snorted at how you easily fit into standing like someone out of an old Western movie. Narrowing your eyes at her you said, “Why?”
“It’s fun,” Wanda stated simply, then added, “and colorful. And…” She stepped closer and toyed with the hem of your vest. With a lowered voice, “… I like the cowboy look.”
You forced the smirk pulling at your lips to keep at bay, instead squinting at Wanda and waving your hands around generally. “Is this— Is this your thing? Is Halloween what does it for you?”
Wanda turned her head away as she laughed out loud, which may have brought attention to the two of you if Tommy, Billy, and Pietro weren’t too busy hollering over their game.
“I’m just curious,” you carried on. “It’s fine, I just need to know! For future consideration. Depending on what the preference is, I might just have to put on a little Rocky Horror Picture Show— which isn’t exactly Halloween but you know what I mean.”
Wanda continued to snicker and lightly swatted your chest. Her gaze drifted to look past your shoulder and almost at the same time, you picked up the sound of footsteps making their way downstairs; the last member of your household was finally arriving.
“Now what is going on here?” Vision’s chipper British voice was music to your ears as he made it to the ground floor.
You and Wanda shifted your attention to him—and you immediately started laughing. Vision’s green bodysuit paired with a golden cape and wrestling shorts, and the lopsided paper gem stuck to his forehead to cover his real one, was just too much.
“What?” Vision said, sounding offended, as you had to lean against the table behind you while continuing to cackle. While you looked at him through teary eyes, he put on his best fighting face and threw up his fists to make a few boxing motions. “You think it’s smart to laugh at a world-famous wrestler? I’ll show you!”
You continued to snicker but forced yourself to settle. Wiping your eyes, you quipped back, “We’ll fight and then I’ll use my lasso to tie you up, seems fair to me.”
That made Vision, who was still taking a little time to get used to your boldness, freeze.
One of your favorite things about Vision’s awakening, as you liked to call it, was the gradual change in personality that had come with it. Regaining your past and your abilities also brought a great bout of self-confidence. You couldn’t be sure whether this had been your personality pre-Westview or simply a product of finally putting together a lot of the foggy pieces you’d once been missing but either way, you certainly weren’t complaining. You were still awkward and sometimes just a look from either of your partners could make you turn the color of a strawberry but at least you could manage a tease or flirt without immediately cringing in on yourself, and you certainly weren’t afraid to initiate a smooch.
“Behave,” Wanda scoffed in your direction. She gave Vision a comforting pat on the shoulder, which seemed to set him back on track.
“You started it,” you said with a grin, then stepped closer to try to straighten the fake diamond to no avail. “So. Wrestler?”
“Cowboy?” Vision questioned.
“Sheriff, thank you very much.” You tapped on the badge to make a point.
“My apologies.” Vision said in a teasing tone.
“My wrestler and my cowboy,” Wanda said with a pleased smile.
You squinted at her again. “Seriously. Wrestlers too? I’m fascinated.”
Wanda slapped your shoulder.
Three of you must have caused enough ruckus to break up the house’s other trio because then Pietro appeared at your sides.
“Woah!” the silver-haired man said, “Sweet costume, bro-ham-in-law.”
Your nose scrunched up in a mild cringe. Ew, hated that.
“Let me guess,” Pietro went on, “uh, traffic light.”
Vision sighed. You snorted.
“Half-shucked corn?”
Also a good one.
“A booger!”
And back to ew.
Vision rolled his eyes and gave a begrudging “Yes.”
Pietro fist-pumped the air and danced away in victory.
“By the way,” Wanda said, “thank you for humoring me and wearing this ridiculous get-up, honey.”
“Well, there were no other clothes in my closet, so…” Vision trailed off with a suddenly somber expression, only to break into a teasing smile a moment later. “You are incorrigible, darling. I know you have a secret thing for wrestlers.”
You cackled again as he and Wanda got closer and continued to coo at each other in a way that you found equal parts cute and disgusting. You moved away from them to collect yourself, only to catch their attention.
“Oh, don’t worry,” Wanda said teasingly, “you’ll get your pony-talk too!”
“Please,” you begged with a shaking head and shaking hands, “dear god, no.”
Then Vision waggled his brows at you, hit you with a bad Southern-British combo accent and a pointed “howdy” and you screamed before breaking into laughter yet again.
Vision laughed with you before turning his attention to the boys, while Wanda walked over with a grin and to help you off the ground.
“What do you say, boys?” Vision hollered. “Who’s ready for that first hit of high fructose corn syrup?”
The kids and Pietro kept hollering over their video game.
“I hated every second of that,” you said to Wanda as she helped you to your feet.
Wanda gave you a playful pout, then her smile returned as she straightened the handkerchief tied around your neck. When she was satisfied, she moved the hat from behind your back and onto your head. “You chose this.”
“Mm.” You hummed and nodded while fixing your vest. “I did in fact do that. Lucky me, two for one nerd deal.”
“So, about that Rocky Horror idea…”
You stared at her, bewildered. “What has this day done to you?”
Vision’s attention slowly refocused on you and Wanda as he was getting nowhere with Billy and Tommy, though his eyes still lingered on them and their uncle. “Wanda.”
“Yes, dear?” Wanda chirped, turning her smile to her husband.
“Never told me much about your brother,” Vision said with eyes still trained on the three. “I had no idea he’d be so…” He trailed off as the two boys and one man-child started shotgunning sodas; Vision made a face and gave a thumbs-up as he continued sarcastically, “…great with kids.”
“Yeah,” Wanda replied in a tone that shared his exasperations, “He’s just… full of surprises.”
At this point, you were watching the trio as well. After a pause, you piped up, “I don’t know what you guys are talking about. I think he’s a wonderful role model. Such manners.”
You received the gaze of two pairs of narrowed eyes. You gave them a cheerful smile and quirk of your eyebrows in return.
Vision rolled his eyes and began making his way to the door. “Well, you have fun tonight, darling. [Y/N], will you be joining me later?”
“That’s the plan, beanstalk,” you said. You pinched and tugged the stretchy fabric of his bodysuit and let it snap back into place, earning you a glinting glare.
Then Wanda was following after him, confusion wiping the happy expression off her face. “What? What do you mean? You’re all dressed up and ready to go, where the two of you going?”
Vision stopped faux-boxing your hands away as you continued to try to pick at his outfit to wave his arms around his head. “I’m undercover! Halloween is bacchanal for adolescent trouble-makers and the neighborhood watch is the only thing that stands between the trees and the toilet paper.”
“No,” Wanda said and her eyes blinked rapidly in the way that they did when she was trying to comprehend something that didn’t seem right, “that’s not what you’re supposed to—”
“What?” Vision interrupted in a stern voice, with a pointed look.
“Well…” Wanda crossed her arms over her chest and sighed. Her bewildered eyes darted in your direction just briefly before she turned a scowl on Vision. Lowering her voice a bit, she said, “You didn’t tell me you had plans.”
Vision’s hands rested steadily on his hips and his eyes pointed dull daggers back at her own; it was a stand-off. “Well, I am telling you now.”
I should probably step in, you thought.
“It’s their first Halloween. You have to be there.” Wanda’s gaze turned on you, as did Vision’s in the same moment. “And you too?”
Oh boy.
Your eyes bounced between your one partner’s gaze and then the other’s before it settled between them, where you could see Billy, Tommy, and Pietro’s gaming session had slowed. Billy was talking into a nonexistent camera and you could pick out enough words that what he was talking about were his mom and dad. Pietro was glancing around like he was supposed to be doing something and he even began to stand and make his way over—before you hit him with a warning glare and mouthed “no” that had him glued back to his couch seat.
“Not to throw shade at Vision,” you offered, stepping closer and directing Wanda and Vision a few steps farther away from the rest of the household, “which I’m not doing, FYI, but I will be around for most of the festivities. A surrogate Vision, if you will.”
Both of their gazes softened a bit and Wanda opened her mouth to start her tri-parent inclusive spiel but you smiled and waved both her and Vision off.
“I know already, I know, I was just teasing. Wanda, my love,” you continued and turned your attention to her as you moved your hand from her shoulder to her own, “Vision is a neighborhood watch member and I do believe that all the dads of the cul-de-sac are taking part in… watching over the neighborhood during Halloween. You know how kids—and crazy uncles—can be. And I’m just trying to offer my help because let’s face it, I still haven’t exactly made the best of impressions like you two have managed to.”
Wanda tilted her head from side to side, no doubt remembering your interactions with Dottie that she was present for or perhaps your horror stories of previous attempts at impressing the watch, before giving a resigned nod.
“So, I’ll be here, Pietro will be here, Vision will be around and just doing his job, and everything is going to be fine and fun and… the bomb— Ew, did not like that, and if I ever say it again, please send me to the gallows or whatever cowboys punish people with.”
“Guns, usually,” Vision mumbled.
You snickered. “Well, mine are plastic, so my bad, but anyway—”
Wanda huffed a bit gave you a dismissive wave before you could ramble further. “Fine, fine. But you have to promise that we’ll at least spend the night together afterward.”
That last part was directed at Vision, who responded with a nod. Then he cupped a yellow gloved hand around the back of her neck and leaned down to kiss her forehead. “Of course, I promise, darling.”
Wanda, still upset, reacted very little but she didn’t stop him.
Vision straightened up and directed his attention to Tommy and Billy, who were back to loudly playing their game. Making an ominous gesture with his arms as he backed towards the door, he said to them, “You have a spoo-OO-ooky time tonight, kids.”
“Goodnight, Dad!” Billy hollered, with Tommy saying “Bye, Dad” at the same moment. Neither boy looked away from their TV screen.
“Wanda,” Vision said softly to her, “be good.”
As he passed you, he leaned down to give you a peck as well, but you caught him by the cape and kissed his jaw first. As you pulled back, you grumbled, “Be back, Vis.”
His gaze quickly trailed across your face before he gave you a nod and a kiss on the lips. Then he stepped away—and jumped into a strange, half-pouncing pose and said, “I smell crime,” before shuffling his way out the front door.
“I smell bellyaches in the morning,” you said to no one particular as you shut the door behind him.
Wanda trailed after you, frowning, and her hand lingered on the door.
“Hey.” You took her hand and brought it to your lips to kiss each fingertip as she turned your attention to you. “It’ll be okay.”
Now Wanda’s eyes traced a path across your face before meeting your eyes. “How can you be so sure?”
You replied simply, “I have faith in you and Vision more than I do in anyone else.”
Wanda nodded slowly and took her hand back. She turned around, was greeted by Pietro with a scary face and a bottle of shaving cream in each hand, and screamed. She jumped back against you and you circled your arms protectively around her waist. She scolded her twin, “Don’t do that!”
Pietro snickered. “Where do you keep your water balloons?”
“What?” Wanda’s brows furrowed. “We don’t have water balloons.”
“Where are we gonna put all this shaving cream?” Pietro asked, raising the large cans for her to see. He glanced at you where your chin was resting on Wanda’s shoulder.
You gave him a slight nod, then lightly jutted your chin in the direction of the kitchen. “Backyard,” you mouthed, “Shed.”
Pietro grinned.
Wanda scoffed and gave your cheek a light swat. “Don’t encourage him!”
You snickered and smooched her cheek.
Tommy walked over with an opened plastic bag in hand; Pietro used this as an excuse. Pointing a finger at the boy, he said, “It was Billy’s idea.”
“I’m Tommy.”
“And I’m heading back to the house,” you added in. You peeled yourself away from Wanda after giving her a couple more teasing kisses, despite Tommy and Pietro’s gagging responses, and continued, “I’m going to try to get a couple more boxes packed, want to be done by the weekend. See you in an hour or so?”
“How dare you leave me with these monsters,” Wanda said goodnaturedly.
You shrugged as you opened the front door and began backing out of it.
“Don’t worry,” you said, then gave your partner a smirk and a wink, “you’re a goddess, after all.”
You were humming casually as you walked down the street. You kept a close eye on Tommy and Billy as they walked slightly ahead of you, chatting about candy, and a familiar tug in your stomach told you that Wanda and Pietro were still walking just behind you.
Suddenly Tommy and Billy ran off. Pietro yelled the mildly concerning encouragement of “Unleash hell, demon spawn!” Wanda let out a worried holler of your name but you were already heading after the boys.
“I got ‘em!” you hollered with a wave over your shoulder. You jogged after them and scooped them into the air from behind, shaking them around as they giggled. Setting them down again, you followed them up to a house, narrowly avoiding other kids and parents. “You’re not supposed to run off, you know.”
“It’s okay,” Billy stated, “Mom will take care of us.”
“Yeah,” Tommy agreed, “she’s magic!”
You snorted. “That doesn’t mean give her a harder time just because of it.”
The three of you reached the opened door of the house. An older woman dressed as a fairytale queen stood in the doorway, holding a bowl full of candy goodies that she lowered for Tommy and Billy to grab from. You glanced at them to see Tommy shoveling twice as much candy as he should into his bag and rolled your eyes before looking back to the woman. She smiled and said, “Good evening, Sheriff, how’s patrol going?”
You put on your best Southern accent and responded with a tip of your hat, “All’s well, Your Highness. Nothing can get past me and my band of… wizard and lightning bolt.”
Finished with their looting, Tommy and Billy spun around and ran back to their mother and uncle. You gave the woman another hat tip before running after them, chuckling.
“Next house, Mom!” Tommy cried as the three of you reached her and Pietro.
“What am I,” you huffed, “chopped liver?”
“You,” Pietro replied pointedly, “don’t have super speed. Whaddya say, boys? How about you let Uncle P maximize your candy acquisition, huh?”
“Yeah,” Tommy exclaimed, “kick-ass!”
“Language,” you warned with a tousle of his silver-painted hair. You stepped over to Wanda’s side as Tommy grasped Billy’s hand, then reached out for Pietro’s.
“I feel the need,” Pietro started.
“For speed!” Tommy finished. They grabbed each other’s hand and then the three of them were gone in a silvery blue streak.
“Kick-ass,” Wanda said. She stared at you incredulously.
“I see the double standard I’m setting,” you stated. “Also, we’re going to regret letting them leave.”
“Probably.” Wanda gave you an empathetic pat on the shoulder, then spotted someone behind you. She made her way around you and walked over to Herb, who wore a fantastic Frankenstein’s Monster costume, and you walked after her. “Oh, hey, Herb.”
“Oh, hey, Wanda, [Y/N],” Herb responded.
You noticed as you got closer, waving absentmindedly, that he had a wire in his ear, probably set up to communicate with the other neighborhood watch members. You wondered if Vision had thought his cover through and actually told anyone that he was going to help out the watch tonight.
“How’s the patrol going?” Wanda asked.
“Eh, quiet so far,” Herb replied, only for a crackle to sound in his ear. He asked for the two of you to hang on for a moment, then put a finger to his ear. “Say again. All the candy has disappeared?”
As if on cue, Pietro and the twins went zipping by behind him, leaving no candy in their wake. You and Wanda exchanged nervous glances.
“And now all the jack-o’-lanterns have been smashed,” Herb continued. “And now everyone’s covered in silly string?”
“I said we’d regret it,” you muttered to her.
She anxiously looked about, trying to follow the streak flying up and down the street. “[Y/N], honey, could you maybe…?”
“I’ll get the pumpkins and silly string,” you offered, your powers already beginning to warm your fingertips, “you get the candy?”
“Deal.”
Wanda pretended to fix her hair and used the action to mask a subtle power-conjuring gesture. In response, the insides of bowls and bags being held by the people around you began to glow red as their candy was replenished.
Now that you had a handle on your own abilities, it was easy to manage with no hand movements required. The power itself was fairly simple: you could transform matter from one form to another. It came with a couple of other quirks, like a heightened awareness of certain energies—such as Wanda’s magic or Vision’s overall synthezoid being—and being able to use that awareness to find a person if you focused hard enough and paid attention to the pull in your gut but overall, you didn’t find it particularly special and it was nowhere near as powerful as Wanda’s. You could also drain your powers if you used them too long or focused on them too hard, and had to keep a constant source of energy intake to keep both your body and ability’s energy in check; in other words, you were almost always snacking.
It was useful in times like these, though, where you had a target object or objects that needed to be covered up. All you had to do was focus—not too little and not too much, you found through trial and error; that was the trickiest part—and let the prickling heat coat your hands, and then thin wisps of black appeared to float around smashed pumpkins or entangle themselves with lines of silly string. Black turned to white as the transformation began to take place—silly string into fake cobwebs, Halloween-themed strings of light, or sinking into peoples’ clothing to become part of the pattern, and pumpkins into sturdier variations of themselves or other Halloween decorations—before white turned to red and then faded altogether.
You’d think at least one person of Westview would notice such feats of glowing magic and decorations appearing before their very eyes but no. The only indication that anything had changed at all was another crackle in Herb’s ear.
“Oh, nice,” Herb said in response to the talking in his ear, “everything seems to be all good now.”
“Huh, weird,” you said as you casually shook off the tingling sensation in your hands, “I wondered what happened.”
“Pranks, probably,” Wanda suggested after clearing her throat and dropping her hands. “Of course, the watch probably handled it. I’m sure Vision had a hand in it.”
“Vision?” Herb questioned. “Oh, he’s not on duty.”
Nice job, Vis.
“Oh,” Wanda said, “I… I thought…”
“Is there something I can do for you, Wanda?” Herb asked, suddenly staring intently at her. “Do you want something changed?”
Wanda became visibly uncomfortable and she chuckled nervously. “No. It’s fine. Nevermind.”
You eyed Herb; his eyes weren’t quite glassy but they stared with an emptiness that made your intestines twist before they snapped back to normal when Wanda indicated that everything was fine. You placed a supporting hand on Wanda’s back and slowly ushered her away as Herb smiled, waved, and walked off down the street.
“Strange,” Wanda said with a few rapid blinks.
“Very.” you agreed as the two of you walked on. “Are you okay?”
Wanda blinked once more, then stopped walking. “Did Vision lie to me?”
You slowed and turned to face her before stopping altogether. “Well, he’s technically doing his job.”
Wanda stared at you. “Do you know where he is? What he’s doing?”
You winced, then shook your head. “I don’t. I’m sorry. I told him that he should talk to you and he must have decided he didn’t want to ‘get me in trouble’ or something.”
Wanda frowned and mumbled, “What is wrong with us…?”
“I’m sorry,” you tried again as you anxiously toyed with the hem of your short vest, “I want to help.”
Wanda sighed and gave you a small, sad smile. “You tried.”
Later that night, while you and Wanda were back walking with the group, Tommy found himself to have developed super-speed like Pietro because of course, he had. As you’d done for most of the day, you tasked yourself with watching over the kids while Wanda used her time to catch up with her estranged brother. This time, you were watching Tommy zip Billy and himself around to test out his new ability while Wanda and Pietro wandered a little further down the street. Now that Tommy had an energy similar to that of his parents, even if you couldn’t see him, you could hone in on him and follow a familiar pull.
You were leaning against the side of the local cinema, which was currently showing The Incredibles—Westview had apparently shifted decades again—and attempting to make a mental map of Tommy’s speedy travels while using the compass-like pull when the pull suddenly yanked your attention upward. Your eyes shot open as you sought out the call of your attention and against the starless night sky, you could see a pinprick of familiar golden light hovering over a floating silhouette.
You glanced over to Wanda and Pietro, who were deep in conversation. Then a flash of silver light zipped across your field of vision; you stopped Tommy and Billy by turning a section of the street in their path to wet cement.
“Hey, no fair!” Tommy whined.
“My costume…” Billy mumbled sadly.
You tugged them out of the wet cement, turned it back to asphalt, and transformed the mess on their shoes and pants into grass clippings that could easily be brushed off. After doing so, you straightened up and took the toy guns out of your holsters. You thought about turning them into squirt guns and setting the twins loose, then decided that wouldn’t make you any better than Pietro and settled for transforming them into massive chocolate bars instead. You held them out to the twins.
“Take these,” you said, “and be on your best behavior for the rest of the night. Go with your mom and Pietro to the movie showing. Tell them I’ll be back in a bit, okay?”
Tommy eyed the chocolate skeptically before shrugging and taking it anyway. “Where are you going?”
“To make sure Vision gets home on time,” you replied. Tommy shrugged again and walked off, and you started to turn away when you felt a little hand grasp your wrist and the slight spark of magical energy that came with it. You looked down to see Billy staring up at you with wide eyes.
“Do you think they’ll be okay?” he asked softly. “Mom and Dad?”
You took his hand and squeezed it. “Of course, hon’. If anyone can make something work, they can.”
Billy stared for a little longer before nodding. He squeezed your hand back, then dropped it. “Stay safe.”
“That’s the plan.”
You were following your inner compass to Vision, who was no longer flying overhead when you began feeling the weird sensation of something non-physical trying to clamber inside your head. You were tempted to try to block yourself from whatever it was trying to reach you but it didn’t feel threatening. Instead, it felt somewhat familiar and it felt scared.
You paused and try to figure out what exactly it was and as you did so, your head filled with radio static, struggling to get in tune. You focused harder, invited whatever was trying to connect with you to do so, and just as the familiarity clicked as Billy, the young boy’s voice rang inside your skull.
It’s Dad, Billy’s voice said and then the radio static was reappearing. Before it completely overtook him, you could hear, He’s in trouble.
Just as Billy’s voice and then the radio static disappeared from your head, a section of the barrier shielding Westview from the outside world exploded into view. From your previous experience with going through the barrier yourself, you recognized the warping of the static wall as trying to bend around something trying to leave to prevent it from doing so.
Burning heat suddenly flared in your palms, strong enough to envelop your entire arms and lick at your shoulders and neck. Then you were running to Vision’s aid, throwing bolts of glowing energy ahead of you to transform obstacles like trees and signs into harmless items that were no longer in your way as you beelined to your partner. While the visible section of the barrier was easy enough to follow, it didn’t tell you anything about the condition of the person it was fighting against. Instead, the normally steady pang that was now quickly shattering and fading told you Vision was not just in danger but dying, and fast. You attempted to quicken your pace further.
    By the time you reached the edge of Westview, you felt sweaty and exhausted, and the numbness of falling asleep limbs was setting into your hands and arms; you’d overused your abilities. Still, when you saw that Vision was nowhere to be seen, meaning he’d managed to make it through the barrier, you pushed forward and started forcing your way through it as well. Although your powers were weak from overuse and nothing compared to Wanda’s they did help make the passage somewhat easier. Just before you broke through to the other side, you felt what could only be described as the magic version of the pullback of a wave before a tsunami was about to hit.
    Then you were collapsing on the other side of the barrier. It was hell there—a high-tech military base was set up, trucks and soldiers were swarming around, a woman was being handcuffed to one truck by a familiar man—but all you could focus on was the body of your dying lover laying on the ground barely a foot ahead of you, pieces of him tearing from his body and flying backward to be absorbed by the energy field just behind you. You felt yourself choke out a sob from seeing him in such a state and forced yourself to crawl one inch, then two inches, then three inches forward until you could wrap a weak hand around his ankle and attempt to feed what little bit of energy that you had left into him. You drained yourself little by little of everything you had left until dark spots appeared in your eyesight and you didn’t have enough strength to lift your head or keep a tight hold on Vision’s ankle.
    You were about to pass out when Wanda’s magic hit crashed into you like a wave and traveled outward. Then everything went black.
Despite how many comic writers have ignored Tommy over the years, Jac & her team—and Jett Klyne, Julian Hilliard, Elizabeth Olsen & Paul Bettany—did such delicate work with him. Respected the writers who HAVE dug into his character and even with so little screen time, created a beautiful foundation.
They set up this brilliant play with tropes—where you think of Billy as the sweet one & Tommy as the prankster at first, but then, you dig deeper. Billy is deeply caring, with a kind heart & is a silly fanboy at times, but he is also DEEPLY traumatized & ultimately the Demiurge—when he breaks (usually because you’ve hurt someone he loves), he breaks (and has within him the emotional and power-creep potential to be a destroyer of worlds), and he is “not that nice.” Meanwhile Tommy has a wry humor & thinks of himself as “the cool twin” while Billy is a “dorkasaurus rex,” but deep down, he is the nervous one—a gentle spirit with a sweet heart, highly attuned to the people around him, who just wants everyone he loves to be okay. (Example: When Wanda “died” and was reborn in a Krakoa-era X-Men series a few years ago, it wasn’t Billy who was there first—it was Tommy. He refused to leave her body for even 1 night, dashed into her arms when Cerebro brought her back… & I feel like Jac knew that.)
Spirits alive, it’s nice to have good writers again. 😭
Justice for Tommy Maximoff because that little angel loves his twin so much!!! He was born first so he is technically the older brother and he totally acts like it.
When Billy reveals his powers for the first time, Tommy isn’t jealous at all, he’s just like “whoa!!” with a huge smile, thinking his brother is so cool for being able to do that.
When Billy becomes tense as he senses their dad is hurt, Tommy immediately notices and asks “are you okay??”
When Agatha has them both in a chokehold, Tommy screams “LET GO OF MY BROTHER!!!”
When their mom tells them to hide, Tommy grabs Billy and runs.
When Billy becomes tense again as he foresees their mom’s confrontation with the townspeople, Tommy immediately notices again and asks “what’s wrong??”
When they work together to take out the S.W.O.R.D. agents, Tommy gives Billy a hi-five.
That boy better come back soon because he deserves to live as much as Billy does.
Edit: And now we know Billy is looking for him aaaaaaaagh! Pleaaassee let them find each other, Jac Schaeffer, I’m begging you.
Caterwauling in the Rain
Summary: Marinette and Adrien share their very first kiss after their very first date. Chat is so overjoyed he’s ready to burst into song, albeit not all Parisians share the sentiment. Ladybug comes to investigate the complaints about a feline caterwauling in the spring rain. Luckily, it’s just her very wet boyfriend. A Miraculous Writer Zine story.
A/N: This is my piece for @mlwriterzine . I’m so happy I can finally share it! I feel honored to be among the chosen authors. I want to thank everyone, who made this zine possible, it was an amazing adventure! Make sure to read works in the zine collection, they're all a m a z i n g !
AO3
The whisper of wind in his ears, the tap of boots on the tin roofs, the pigeons nesting among the chimneys, cooing to the spring in his step. Chat Noir ran high over the streets, reveling in this late April evening, basking in the fading light of day.
 Everything in his path was blooming recklessly, fueled by sunshine, turning the warmth of spring into an opulent palette of greens, whites, yellows, pinks, and every other color one could think of.
 It wouldn’t have been far from the truth if Chat claimed he floated on the breeze. It certainly felt like it. Butterflies, the good kind, not the evil purple ones that’d been giving them so much grief, fluttered happily in his stomach. His chest swelled with affection as if it tried to contain all the smells and scents at once.
 His heart was so full he was ready to burst into song any second now. And snugly pressed to his chest was none other than the bravest, prettiest, awesomest, and the most amazing girl he knew. The love of his life, sans the spots. Marinette Dupain-Cheng. His Lady. His girlfriend. His everything.
Her hair tickled the exposed skin under his chin, but he was too focused on carrying his precious cargo to utter a chuckle. It was her who giggled happily instead.
 “I really could have gotten home myself, silly Kitty,” she murmured to his sternum. Only his enhanced hearing allowed him to pick up the words over the rush of air and the buzz of traffic.
 “A gentlecat always walks the lady home after a date,” he countered, allowing a little bit of flirt to seep into his voice.
 A date! he thought excitedly, his heart skipping a few beats. The very first real one, official and everything. Not that anyone paid attention to two goofy teens sharing an ice cream, walking down the banks of the Seine and doing all the carefree, silly things teens did. Bantering, picking flowers, playing tag just because. Holding hands, stealing glances, blushing. Basically half of Adrien’s bucket list went down on that date, more than he could ever hope for. It was still very fresh—the romantic side of their relationship, just like nature herself, coming to life with spring—yet he doubted the excitement of enjoying her company on both sides of their masks would ever ebb.
 Alas, their time had run out all too quickly. For unfathomable reasons their parents set a curfew and warned them not to break it. Yet Adrien refused to leave Marinette to return home by herself. He announced his arrival at the mansion, claiming he was exhausted after a busy day, and dashed off to his room. The door barely had time to close behind him when Chat Noir was already leaping through the window. He scooped Marinette into his arms and vaulted them high and away from the prying eyes of pedestrians. Just a little run and they were already on the little balcony of 12 Rue Gotlib.
 It wasn’t dusk yet, although darkness already settled over the city thanks to the rain clouds that flocked from the west, keeping the last rays of spring sun to themselves. A silver half-moon peeked tentatively over the rooftops, picking up the slack.
 Unexpectedly the sight filled him with nostalgia. “Anything can happen at half-moon,” Chat recited absently. He didn’t remember where he’d heard the verse.
 “Anything?” Marinette frowned in confusion. After all, they had just spent a delightful afternoon together. Why would his mood turn wistful so suddenly?
 He decided to play it off. He grinned cheekily. “Like maybe … a kiss?”
 He was pushing his luck, he knew. They hadn’t reached that milestone yet, still tiptoeing around each other after the accidental reveal, still testing the waters, although neither of them was oblivious to the other’s feelings anymore.
 To his astonishment Marinette fixed him with a coy smile and threw her hands around his neck. She climbed to her toes. “Maybe,” she whispered, her lips a hairbreadth away from his. Her eyes twinkled in the moonlight.
 Chat released a ragged breath against her mouth. He shuddered from head to toe as he wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her flush against him. His body screamed for her, longed for her presence. But he wouldn’t dare to make the first step. He always followed her lead. He had to be sure it was what she wanted, even if he knew it wasn’t in her nature to tease him like this.
 And then Marinette was kissing him. Sweetly, tenderly, with just a hint of passion simmering underneath. The gentle caress shrunk his world to just her and this moment.
 He was sure he died, his heart flatlining out of sheer euphoria, his neurons fried from overjoy, his body coming apart at the seams. He floated to heaven and then her kisses brought him back to life. Back to the warmth of her embrace, to the flowery scent of her skin, and to soft kisses he knew he would never have enough of.
 All too soon she withdrew, leaving his lips tingling and cold. He stumbled, dizzy with love in his heart and springtime in his lungs.
 She must have thought he was being dramatic, because she ruffled his already wild mane.
 “Goof,” she giggled. “Go home, before you catch a cold.”
 “A cold?” He knitted his brows. “Why would I catch a cold now?”
 “It’s raining, you dork.” Marinette bopped him on the nose and turned her hands up. A few plump droplets splashed on her palm.
 Huh? How long did that kiss take? He hadn’t noticed when the rain started. Either those clouds had been moving faster than he’d thought, or he might have been more distracted than usual. Lately he tended to get tunnel vision in Marinette’s company, tuning out everyone and everything while soaking in her presence.
 From behind the deck chair Marinette produced a black umbrella. She pressed it into his claws. “This is no dew, Kitty. It’s going to pour heavily soon.”
 “Really?” He chuckled. She walked straight into this one. “I’m purring already, my Lady.” He grabbed her hand and put it to his chest. Then he released a rumble worthy of a thunderstorm.
 “Besides, where I stand, the sun is shining all over the place.” He dropped the cheesy line with a flourish.
 “See, you’re already delirious,” Marinette replied matter-of-factly. “Also, yes, I’m very proud of you for getting the ‘Singing in the Rain’ reference, you dorkasaurus,” she added, seeing his pout of indignation. “Now go, before you get wet for real.”
 “Didn’t you mean furrrrr real?” he started, but dropped it immediately when she set him with one of Ladybug’s finest glowers. “A kiss good night, purrrhaps?” he asked hopefully.
 Marinette grabbed him by the bell with such force, his hand slipped on the umbrella’s handle. She pressed her lips to his, but with more fire than sugar this time.
 Snap! The black canopy sprang to its full size, startling them both.
 “Sorry! Sorry!” Chat exclaimed, but Marinette just shook her head, launching into a fit of laughter. It was impossible not to join her.
 “This umbrella is absolutely terrible,” she wheezed, clutching at her belly. “The ultimate killjoy.”
 “You mean this is …” He trailed off, finally giving the umbrella a thorough look. Sure enough, he soon found the loopy ‘Agreste’ carved into the handle. “Oh, wow,” he whispered reverently. Marinette had mentioned the significance of that first rain they’d experienced together.
 “Yup. And I want it back, mind you,” she added.
 “This is an Agreste umbrella. You’d need to marry me for the name to check out, Princess.” Chat shot her with a toothy grin.
 “Did you just propose on the first date, Adrien?” She raised a brow. “You might want to save something for the second one.”
 “Ooops.” He feigned a horrified gasp. Incidentally, that absolutely had been on his bucket list. This was Marinette after all. “I’m gonna have to google some new ideas. But anyway, your answer would be …?”
 Marinette shook her head again and thrusted her hand into his face. “You’re impossible. Just go home already before we both catch a cold.”
 Right. He hadn’t noticed her shivering in the cold evening breeze, and the rain probably wasn’t helping.
 “As you wish, m’Lady.” He bowed. “See you tomorrow?”
 “Tomorrow it is, my Prince,” she replied with a curtsy, raising the imaginary fabric of a long dress with her fingers. Then with one last playful wink, she disappeared through the skylight.
 Chat sighed in contentment, drawing in the chilly, humid air. He didn’t feel even a little bit tired, more like ignited after the spectacular afternoon of romance, flirting, and banter. He leaped to the railing and elongated his baton so that it hit the pavement. Then, like a leather-clad Mary Poppins, he floated down, startling a few passersby.
 “Du-dudu-du, du-du-dudu-dee-dudu,” he hummed under his breath, setting into a leisurely stroll. The rain picked up a heavier rhythm, just like Marinette predicted.
 “Du-dudu-du, du-du-dudu-dee-dudu.” He continued letting his inner Gene Kelly come out and play. He always wanted to perform that song, ever since he’d watched the movie with his father ages ago. And what better place to do so than the Parisian streets, a classy background to the classic number?
 He already felt the tune bubbling in his throat. He couldn’t contain it any longer even if he tried. With a theatrical shrug he folded the umbrella and propped it against his shoulder. His lips stretched into a dreamy smile when he set off again. Then came the song.
 “I'm siiiingin' in the rain, just siiiiiingin' in the rain.” His voice carried over the street, earning him a few confused glances. He gave his audience a little wink.
 “What a gloooorious feeling, I'm haaaaaappy again,” he claimed, jumping onto a lampost. “I'm laughing at clouds. So daaaark up above. The sun's in my heart ...” Chat’s smile turned into something more smitten as he gazed upon a certain balcony looming in the distance, “… and I'm reeeeeady for loooove.”
 “Let the stoooormy clouds chase everyone from the place.” He waved at a couple making their way through the rain, hiding under an already-soaked newspaper. They chuckled at his antics and clapped, rewarding his performance.
 Encouraged, Chat turned his face to the sky while throwing his arms to the sides in a truly musical fashion. “Come on with the rain! I've a smile on my face!”
 He resumed his walk, nonchalantly swinging the umbrella in large circles. “I walk down the lane, with a haaaaaaaappy refrain. Just singing, singing iiiiiiiin the rain.”
 Chat spotted a few phones aimed at him and chuckled inwardly. People always looked for a scoop. Alya was going to be so angry she missed this. He could almost hear her gritting her teeth. Let's give them a show, he thought as his feet carried out the routine, a mix of waltz and tap dancing.
 “Daaaaaancing in the rain,” he howled. “La-daaaa-da-da-di-daaaaAAA. I'm happy again.” He grabbed the umbrella as if it were a ukulele and struck a chord, making an elated face, as if he were Luka’s more handsome twin. “I'm singin' and dancing in the rain.”
 More tap dancing followed. Chat finally found a way to release all the pent-up energy that had come from the afternoon spent with the love of his life. He tapped, he stepped, he pirouetted, for his joy and for the entertainment of a significant crowd that had gathered to witness his performance. The umbrella was his partner, his pendulum, his microphone and staff. Oh, how versatile a prop this was! Chat leaped like a very wet ballerina, jumped over the puddles or right into them, frolicking in a totally unfeline manner, splashing the water onto himself and all around. A reckless, unstoppable dancing and singing machine.
 Slosh! A wall of cold water washed over him, effectively ending the show. He wiped the liquid from his eyes only to see a very familiar red-clad figure holding a polka-dotted bucket, which must have been the source of his unexpected and involuntary shower.
 Concern marred Ladybug’s face. She breathed heavily—she must have been running fast to get here. But why did she have to be such a … what had Marinette said? Ah, an ultimate killjoy.
 “Why did you go and do that?” he complained, frowning in accusation. Water dripped from his soaked hair right into his ears. Both pairs.
 Ladybug narrowed her eyes at him. “The neighbors were complaining about some caterwauling felines and I decided to investigate in case there was an akuma,” she said.
 Chat shook his head, trying to get rid of the ear leak. “Well, was there?”
 His partner raised a brow and smirked, taking in his drenched form.
 “Oh.” It suddenly dawned on Chat that maybe performing a musical number in a city regularly haunted by mind-controlling villains wasn’t the best of ideas. “Sorry,” he said sheepishly, then shivered. “I’m cold,” he added.
 “Awww, poor kitty,” Ladybug cooed. She relaxed her shoulders, no longer alert. “I need to take you home.” She tangled her yo-yo around a chimney, grabbed him at the waist and in the next moment they were already soaring over the streets.
 She stopped on a roof a block away from the mansion. Her timing was perfect, as usual.
 “AAAACHOOOOO!” Chat’s sneeze was so powerful Plagg flew out of the ring, taking the leather suit with him. The little kwami didn’t look happy in the least.
 “Awww, shucks.” Adrien trembled. “Now it’s even colder.”
 “You don’t say,” Plagg grumbled. He was dripping wet.
 Ladybug sighed in disbelief. She scooped the sprite into her hand and hid him in her pigtail. Then she proceeded to lift Adrien princess style and set off in the direction of his house. Unseen and undetected by the mansion’s security system, she slipped through the bathroom window and into the warmth of his room.
 A true hero, the epitome of helpfulness, she grabbed a blanket from the bed and wrapped him tight. Then, with a towel she had taken from the bathroom, she gave Plagg the same treatment.
 “I’m gonna leave you to change and go to sleep,” she finally declared. “No more clowning!” She pointed a finger at Adrien.
 He gave her an innocent blink. Alas, Ladybug seemed to be immune to his charm. Or maybe it was just late for her. After all he had caused her to leave the dry room and investigate an alleged akuma attack. He decided to step up his game.
 “Maybe a good-night kiss?” He fluttered his golden lashes hopefully. That always got a nice fluster out of Marinette.
 “Haven’t you gotten like two already?” she frowned.
 “Nuh-uh, that was Chat. Adrien didn’t get any,” he complained. “Besides”—he fixed her with the delightful smile of a teenage heartthrob, his voice lowering to a murmur—“three is the charm, as Lady Luck should be perfectly aware.”
 Ladybug tapped her lip thoughtfully. “Well,” she drawled, stepping closer, “you do make a compelling argument …” Then she closed the space between them.
 Meowrrr, the cat in him uttered. Three was definitely the charm.
Stars are brighter when you’re with me
There’s a power outage in the whole of Paris but instead of chaos, everyone’s united in this rare moment of utter peace beneath the stars. Marinette only wishes Nino was there to experience it with her. (Marinette x Nino, 1.6k words, fluff)
For @lahiffed in the @mlsecretsanta! I hope you enjoy this ninette fic and happy holidays!!
--
It was a rare night in Paris; no one could deny the unmistakable air of energy, not when there was this subtle hub of joy wherever you went, but at the same time, it was the most peaceful it had been in a long, long while. And that was saying something considering Hawkmoth’s defeat years ago, as well as the fact that most people had predicted it to be a hectic evening of people rushing to and fro to fix things.
The power outage had taken most by surprise. Sure, the news reporters had predicted it, had gone so far as to warn everyone to prepare themselves, but no one had quite believed that there would be a whole city wide outage. Paris was darker than ever, but the stars…
The stars were the brightest they’d ever been, and the people? Walking down the roads with their candles, singing carols in the streets, strangers joining hands and groups and hugs; some could have argued it was the happiest they’d been in a while.
Something like this took the edge of the rush of the holiday season; the rush to buy presents, to set up decorations, to cook and bake and design.
Marinette just wished Nino was here to see it all with her.
Though, she knew he was doing good at the club; despite the fact that the club would be relatively empty, the managers had wanted staff members on board to ensure things were kept smooth with the people who did come. She’d gotten a message from Nino earlier about most of the party goers bringing dozens upon dozens of glow sticks, giving them out and sharing them with others until the whole place was pretty much lit up with fluorescent arms.
He had told her it wasn’t chaotic or anything, so there was nothing to worry about, but if so, she couldn’t help the little wish in her mind; couldn’t he come home then?
Blushing, she glanced away from the second cup of hot chocolate she’d made. Of course, if anyone asked, she could just say it was for Tikki (even if she had ignored the sly look the kwami had given her as she’d made the second cup almost instinctively, before realising no one would be there to drink it), but of course she couldn’t deny she was also just being a tad too hopeful…
“You should go to sleep, Marinette,” said kwami piped up from her homemade (doll)house on the balcony table. “It’s getting late.”
She smiled wistfully. “I know. I will, don’t worry Tikki.” Tikki flew up to hug her cheek. “You go have fun with the others, okay? Tell them I can’t wait to see them this Friday.”
Tikki nodded. “Of course. I’m sure they can’t wait to see you too. You’re getting so much stronger with your guardian training, Marinette!”
She ducked her head, bashful. Her guardian training with Fu had begun years ago but she still couldn’t quite believe it; especially without a threat to visualise anymore. At the very least, it had made her get so much closer with all the other kwamis. “Thanks, Tikki.” She playfully pushed her away. “Now go. I’m sure they’ve been waiting for you for a while.”
Tikki laughed, doing a somersault in the air. “The party don’t start till I walk in!”
Marinette raised her eyebrows as she started flying away. “Who taught you that?” She called out after her.
“Trixx!”
She laughed, shaking her head. The fox kwami up to his usual tricks, it seemed.
But as Marinette turned back out to face the view over her balcony, she sighed.
It was just past twelve but the night felt so… young. Younger than it had felt in years. Even younger than the night it finally dawned that Hawkmoth was defeated (the first few nights after had been a whirlwind of numbness she’d rather forget).
It didn’t feel right to just… sleep it away. Not when so many people were having so much fun everywhere else. Even the ones in the street below looked so happy. Families huddled together in their warm winter gloves and beanies and jackets, candles and lamps flickering in the air, sparklers crackling and blazing.
She opened her phone again, flicking through everyone’s stories; late as it was, no one appeared to be sleeping. Alya was with her family, the whole Cesaire family hanging out everywhere in Paris if her selfies were anything to go by. Marinette saw the silhouettes of Anarka, Juleka, and Rose on Luka’s story, as well as other photographs of the Liberty going around the Seine with its lights illuminating the glittering waters. Adrien hadn’t posted anything, but considering his and Kagami’s steadily going private lifestyle (after years of being forced in the spotlight, she couldn’t blame them), she could tell they were probably enjoying this starlit night together somewhere too.
It’s not like she was jealous of everyone else and the fun they were having with all their loved ones… her parents were visiting her uncle in China and Nino… no, she was just sleepy so there wasn’t any time to feel jealous anyway. It’s not like she would have wanted to stargaze with him and point out constellations together and share the hot chocolate and blankets and--
Okay, she was. But when she looked into the sky and only the stars looked back, how could she help it?
Maybe she couldn’t. And maybe she’d just have to bear with it.
“Mari? You up here?”
She jumped, heart racing as she peered over the balcony railing. No, no it couldn’t be… there was no one there. She must have been hearing things.
But unless she was feeling things too--a certain, familiar hand on her shoulder, the glimpse of his red and blue and black wristband catching her eye--then--
She whirled around, eyes widening as she peered in to Nino’s amber ones, knowing his smile even if the world had gone pitch black. “Y-you’re here?” She gasped, confused and speechless before he laughed a little, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Yeah, I wanted to surprise you… so, uh, surprise?” He grinned nervously.
She blinked before giggling, shoulders shaking at the raw joy she felt at seeing her lover. Marinette threw her arms around him, thanking the stars that had answered her hopes and wishes, even one as small and silly as this one.
Though, with his arms around her, it didn’t feel small and silly; it never did, not with Nino.
He pulled away but kept one arm around her, shaking the other as dozens of glow sticks jingled. He took a few off and put them on her instead, making sure her green and blue wristband was still visible at the top. “Got a few of these… this dude brought in so many. But Kim, Alix, and Max went wild with them, they were covered in hoops of these.”
Marinette laughed, admiring the light. “They were there?”
“Yeah, they knew I’d be on shift so they wanted to say hi. You’d think security would be even tighter tonight but…”
Marientte hummed. “The atmosphere is so peaceful though… you’d be worse than Hawkmoth to ruin it.” They laughed, pressing their foreheads together before Nino pulled away completely to look at the two mugs of hot chocolate on the table, a knowing smile on his face. Marinette flushed. “T-that was for Tikki!” She squeaked, even though she could vividly picture Tikki’s roll of her eyes.
“I thought Tikki was going with the others tonight?” Nino asked, his smile widening.
She groaned, hitting her head on his chest in defeat. “We-well, isn’t it a good thing I made you one since you’re here now anyway? You should be grateful,” She mumbled.
Even as he laughed, Nino couldn’t help the warmth growing in his chest. “I am. Dorkasaurus.”
Marinette rolled her eyes. “Moronasaurus.”
They sat down on the blanket she had put out earlier, drinking their hot chocolate as they leaned into each other, the cold winter air setting in. It was late, and yet neither felt sleepy, too content to end the moment.
Nino shifted. “They say the area around the Eiffel tower has been turned into a sort of camping-stargazing-spot for tonight.” He piped up, almost nervously (four years of dating the kindest, most amazing person he’d ever known and he still hadn’t quite gotten over the nervousness).
Marinette turned to look at him, eyes wide; shining even in the darkness of the night. “Do you want to go?”
Nino flushed, backtracking. “Oh I just wanted to mention it. I’d heard it in the club. Lots of people were going.”
Marinette opened her mouth in an ‘o’, cheeks flushing, hoping it wasn’t visible. “Oh.”
Nino gulped--she sounded disappointed, and that was definitely not his intention. “But I mean if you want to go--”
 “W-well only if you want to go.”
“I don’t mind either way--I like this--but I’d also like that. Too. You know.”
“O-oh ye-yes but if you want to go to the Eiffel Tower the-then we can go.”
“But do you want to go?”
“Do you?”
They were facing each other now, visibly blushing in the moon’s glow after their verbal ping-pong, eyes just as wide.
Before they broke out into loud laughter at their antics, falling into each other’s arms, so reminiscent of their school days; when all had been silly crushes and not-very-well-planned-out dates and shockingly-not-like-the-movies-but-even-better first kisses (unless, of course, they counted the childhood kisses when all was nothing but playtime--but who knew that they’d predict their love life a decade in advance?).
“So... do you want to go?” Nino finally asked again, gently resting his chin on her head.
Marinette giggled again, before pulling away to shrug and press a quick kiss to his lips. “I think… I’m fine like this. We’re together either way, right?”
Nino smiled.
“Yeah. Yeah, we are.”
They laced their fingers, content with the faint carols in the streets, underneath the glimmering stars, and best of all; together.
