100 Favorite Idol Songs of 2019

One of the most exciting developments of the idol scene this decade has been the evolution of what an idol song can sound like. Many groups have brought their own idol-pop take on metal, punk, rap, trance, emo, math rock, jazz, shoegaze — or multiple of these genres at once. Dance-pop idols expanded their list of influences too, borrowing from retro styles like city pop and disco but also current trends like future-bass. All the while, the twinkling synths and strings of more traditional groups have yet to wane in popularity.

That genre dive, however, has also become the norm. A strategy of juxtaposition no longer feels impressive with so many combinations of personality and sound that have already been done. An interesting sound won’t necessarily guarantee a long run of success either. A group still needs the tried-and-true idol-group foundations of a drawing narrative and a line-up of likeable members.

That’s if they want to stick around for long. Many acts will continue to be a flash in the pan, and that’s fine: I still think idol groups aren’t designed to last a decade, or even half of that time, and it takes a lot of resources, perseverance and luck to go on for even half of that time. But this decade, we’ve also seen the lifespan of an act grow a little longer. It has not necessarily become easier to navigate — in fact, it might be even harder now with so many around — but the scene has proven to be more established with more potential markets if you can get a little creative.

Adapting to change and tracking that growth has been a key element to idols this decade. Following the evolution of the group’s music has been exciting, but also witnessing individual idols find their own identity in real time has been the most rewarding. This won’t change going into the next decade, and perhaps more crucial, especially as it becomes harder to introduce a sense of novelty: it’s going to be more important to convince others to follow the ride than try to be the next big thing right away.

I wonder what next thing will sound or look like in the coming years as we go forward to a new decade. Will idols need to be a jack of all trades, a master of a different style from single to single? Will they include a multimedia facet to their work, so a song also feels like a video and a live show all at once? Or will their stubbornness to buy into this everything-at-once vision bring a new lane where strictly following a single style has been the right choice all along? It can go any way, and some groups in this list hint at each possibility.

“C’était il y a deux ans. Je vais manger chez des copains, médecins dans un hôpital ardéchois. Une soirée sympa : on mange, on picole, les gamins jouent dans un coin, finissent par sauter sur la table… On les couche, enfin tranquilles ! Mickael, notre pote, s’assombrit. « Ça va ?, je m’inquiète. - Ben pas trop… Il m’est arrivé un sale truc à l’hôpital. » Il a mis un moment, Mickael, à raconter. Il a repris deux fois de la tarte, fait un café… « Il y a un mois, j’étais de garde pendant la nuit. Un patient arrive en urgence vitale, un problème cardiaque. On n’avait pas le matériel pour le soigner sur place, donc j’appelle tout de suite le CHU de Lyon pour le transférer. ‘Pas de problème, on l’attend’, ils me répondent. En attendant l’hélico, je lui prodigue les premiers soins… Et là, arrive un second patient en urgence vitale. Problème cardiaque aussi, sauvable aussi, avec un transfert immédiat à Lyon… Je rappelle le CHU. ‘Désolé, il n’y a qu’un seul hélico affecté pour l’Ardèche. - Quoi ? Vous rigolez ? On en avait plusieurs, avant… - Oui, mais avec la dernière réforme, il n’y en a plus qu’un. - Mais je fais quoi, moi ? J’ai deux patients sur les bras…’ Il y a eu un long silence, et le mec m’a dit : ‘Ben vous choisissez, les gars.’ »

On ne disait plus rien, autour de la table. Et Mickael regardait ailleurs. Puis il a repris : « Donc j’ai choisi. J’ai évalué la morbidité des deux, et j’ai sauvé le plus jeune, un quinquagénaire. L’autre est mort, il avait 63 ans. Il était parfaitement viable. Donc j’ai dû mentir à sa famille, en disant qu’on n’avait rien pu faire. Et ils m’ont cru. » Léa, sa femme, a ajouté : « Ça fait un mois qu’il dort plus, avec cette histoire. - Ben ouais… J’ai pété les plombs. J’ai fait un courrier furax à l’Agence régionale de santé. Deux ans plus tard, Mickael et Léa soutiennent les gilets jaunes. Ils sont toubibs, ils ont une baraque incroyable, des salaires de cinglé – et ils sont souvent sur les ronds-points. Parce qu’à l’hosto, parce que tous les jours, ils sont confrontés à la violence de Macron, à l’ultra-violence de ses copains. A leur violence qui tue. A leur politique qui tue. Au sens propre. Le lendemain de notre conversation, Mickael m’avait envoyé un article du Nouvel Observateur (2 mars 2015). Son titre : « 22 000 postes supprimés dans les hôpitaux d’ici fin 2017. » Le journal précisait : « Le plan d'économies pour les hôpitaux est de 3 milliards d'euros sur trois ans. » Ça n’a pas l’air violent, un article de journal. Ni une annonce du gouvernement. De simples chiffres, des plans d’économies, des ministres en cravate qui les présentent à la télé à des journalistes en cravate. Derrière, il y a des meurtres.   Ils les préméditent.

Le pire ? Le pire, c’est qu’ils le savent. Et qu’ils ne veulent pas que ça se voie. Ça ferait tache, sur la photo de famille. Il faut que cet assassinat silencieux, massif, caché derrière des statistiques, des données chiffrées et des tableaux, continue à être occulté. Depuis deux mois, l’invisible est jaune. Tout jaune, partout, couleur soleil, on ne peut pas le manquer il hurle : « Nous voulons vivre ! » Et il se voit. Un des premiers gilets jaunes traduit en correctionnelle pour avoir foncé, tête en avant, tête nue, à Paris, en mode rugby, sur un escadron de CRS, a dit à la présidente du tribunal en guise d’excuse : « Je voulais juste avoir une vie meilleure. » Il a été condamné. Pour violences sur agents dépositaires de l’autorité publique. Car voici l’argument magnifique, colossal, imparable, qui tourne en boucle depuis deux mois, des télés aux journaux, en passant par les politiques et les sociologues : les gilets jaunes sont « violents », et on peut tout comprendre, tout entendre – sauf leur « violence », injustifiable. Qui occulte la violence des autorités, massive, mortelle, quotidienne.

L’ami Macron vient de faire une lettre aux Français. Il reprend le refrain cent fois entendu : « Il y a une condition : n’accepter aucune forme de violence. Si tout le monde agresse tout le monde, la société se défait ! » C’est vrai, Manu. Tu nous agresses. Hollande, dont tu étais le ministre, et Sarkozy avant lui, et tous les autres, nous agressaient aussi. Et « la société s’est défaite », des hôpitaux ardéchois aux gares du Pas-de-Calais, des ouvriers licenciés aux chauffeurs ubérisés, des caristes d’Amazon aux caissières de supermarché. Maintenant, sur les ronds-points, on refait la société. Et le monde. On panse les plaies. Sans toi. Car il y a trop longtemps que tu nous agresses. La violence, c’est toi. Toujours, tout le temps, partout, dans les chairs de nos pères, dans les retraites de misère, dans les dos brisés de nos mères, dans les produits respirés, dans les 3x8 enchaînées, tous vos coups portés, tous vos poignards plantés.

Eh, Manu, tu sais quoi ? Au Burkina Faso, il y a un an, tu as déclaré : « Je suis d’une génération dont un des plus beaux souvenirs politiques est la victoire de Nelson Mandela sur l’apartheid. C’est ça l’histoire de notre génération. » Alors je vais te dire un dernier truc, un truc sur ton plus beau souvenir politique. Tout ça, on a préféré l’oublier, pour faire de Mandela un gentil grand-père réconciliateur. Tu l’as oublié aussi. Mais Mandela ne l’oubliait pas, lui, et quand on lui demandait s’il le regrettait, il répondait : « C’est toujours l’oppresseur, non l’opprimé, qui détermine la forme de la lutte. Si l’oppresseur utilise la violence, l’opprimé n’a pas d’autre choix que de répondre par la violence. » Dans la France des gilets jaunes, Manu, tu vois qui est l’oppresseur ? Ou tu veux un dessin ? Halloween!

Un fête particulière que je vais associer ici avec feu Channel, ma compagne de au moins 10 ans.

Chatte noire adoptée à sa dernière chance avant la piqûre mortelle, dans un refuge animal et je lui ai donné une vie avec une fin triste au max, le jour ou je devais la mettre dans une boîte pour la faire piquer car trop malade.

Les liens avec les autres, c'est soit par des échanges ou du vécu partagé. C'est mon chat noir qui m'a fait sortir de mon épisode dingue, pas les psys!

Dans une vie, il y des moments tout en contraste souvent avec les même acteurs.

Quelques mots sur l'horreur.

Il y a toute une gradation dans cette catégorie.

Me dis que pour y trouver un divertissement amusant dans le trill d'avoir peur, avec un film d'horreur gore, faut pas l'avoir vécu.

J'inclus une distorsion majeure de la perception quand ça dérape dans l'horreur.

La catégorie qui m'intéresse, est celle liée aux symboles ou qui exploite le fantastique qui est comme je le soulignais, une sublimation du réel et non une fuite.

La richesse du symbole des zombies de Romero par exemple.

L'interprétation qu'on peut leur donner, y en beaucoup!

Le passé qui te revient dans face, la mort lente dans sa patience qui va finir par t'avoir pareil, manger le cerveau de l'autre comme les endoctrinés, le principe de l'armé qui est de casser l'individu au profit du groupe qui devient un seul individu, soit une force unique composée de plusieurs parties qui vont tous dans le même sens, moi dans une certaine mesure quand je dis que je débranche tout (ref ''le peintre squelettisé'' de Ensor!)... le vodou etc.

Un autre et non le moindre, HP Lovecraft dont l'imagerie fantastique a transposée la peur aux temps des spectres vers la menace venue de l'espace avec un culte du retour de la grande race des anciens et de leur savoir de loin supérieur à celui des humains.

Le hic est qu'il existe une documentation ''objective'' sur ce thème et que ce culte est toujours aussi vivant avec de nombreux adeptes!

J'ai souvent des vidéos cutes sur des démonstrations d'affection chez les animaux.

Une évidence pour moi mais ce qui l'est moins, est cette mode un peu gna-gna sur les bébés ou du style check comment chus fine, je stop les chars pour faire traverser une mouman canard et ses petits sur la route!

Me demande combien dans les ''Like'' vont souper avec de la volaille le soir même? Avec ce que ça signifie être ''commanditaire'' du traitement atroce des élevages et de l'abattoir!
