I’m finally reading Journey to the west and remembering all the films, shows, kdramas, cdramas, anime, manga and manhwa that I love that were inspired by it and I’m just giggling annd kicking my feet cause Sun Wukong is just as funny, witty and charismatic as the characters that were styled after him. Like no wonder that in 99% of the adaptations the writers NEED to pair him up with someone (mainly the character styled after Tang Sanzang who has frequently been a woman to fit all the het fantasies the authors might have).
Also, I’m hell of surprised that something written over five centuries ago can be so relevantly funny and feel like a contemporary fantasy (I’m reading the Julia Lovell translation)

My current favourite characters are all queer psychopaths. I’m sure that’s just a coincidence. This challenge was so. Much. Fun.

You know why I expected more for Naksu/Cho Yeong?
Because Hong Sisters created them.
I expected more from the writers that created Jang Man Wol, Jin Seon Mi and priestess Asanyeo.

Hwayugi or A Korean Odyssey is a show which started with so much promise but ended up being a bit of a disappointment. [Spoilers ahead]
My biggest gripes with the plot are (and these are only from the top of my head):
1. What was the relevance of samjang's death? She literally didn't do anything...
2. What about the all the premonitions that had been embedded in the plot such as the monkey will change fate or a human would save the world, nothing of the sort happened (if it had it would be so cool)
3. There needed to be more backstory on the characters especially secretary ma and devil king woo, furthermore the character of asanyeo was so paper-thin that she seemed to have no motivation for all the evil she was doing (except wanting the love of a man who was clearly unavailable and also completely uninterested)
4. Why did they do that to buja??? There's was not even closure neither to her mother's death nor to her relationship with PK
5. Same goes for Alice/Jade dragon, so much potential wasted
6. Why did Jin Seo-mi become more and more helpless as the show went on, she started out as a badass girl boss dealing with life's problems on her when Son O Gong's arrival suddenly turned her into a damsel in distress
7. I was not interested in the queen mother storyline at all as there was no backstory to be invested in
8. The villain was literally a caricature with nothing to make him stand apart
9. What reward did either samjang or the great save equal to heaven get for saving the world (conclusion: the spiritual realm folks are assholes)
Rant over... But I did enjoy the drama for the most part, especially Son O Gong who was a delight to watch and his bromances with the devil king woo and President Sa, I also loved the way he ended every sentence to Jin Seo-mi with because I love you in the early days, this all kept me interested so that I could watch the show till the end... But I must say the writers turned what could have been an epic show into a huge let down... Especially the last two episodes

What are your fav dramas? I enjoyed reading some of your posts about Love Next Door. :)

hi there, anon! thank you for reaching out — i'm so happy to hear that you liked my posts! :)
honestly; i been enamored with k-dramas since 2016. i have seen many: some sweet, some sad, some bitter — yet none of them have left a mark on me the way lovely runner has. LR has my entire heart and is largely responsible for the healing i've been able to hold along with my grief.
that said, these are a few other dramas that i have greatly enjoyed watching: while you were sleeping, w:two worlds, suspicious partner, bride of habaek, cheese in the trap, to the beautiful you, descendants of the sun, crash landing on you, our beloved summer, fight for my way, hwayugi: a korean odyssey, my love from another star, healer, it's okay not to be okay, twenty-five / twenty-one (despite the gutwrenching ending!), doom at your service, rookie cops, and love in the moonlight.

wanna ask for any recommendations for dramas (country no matter) where a deity/god/angel/demon/higher power of some sort (not fairytale beings like mermaids) falls in love with a human. like doom at your service or bride of habaek. higher power doesn't have to be ML but preferably so
Oooh I love when a god/deity falls in love with a human!
K-Dramas where a God/Diety/Angel Falls for a human:
Hwayugi/ Korean Odyssey: A monkey god falls in love with a human who can see spirits. It's got a great enemies to lovers plot and the side characters are great! While not perfect, it's very funny and also has amazing romance.
Angel's Last Mission: Love: I'm a sucker for this romance about a blind ballet dancer and an angel that fall in love. Shin Hye Sun is everything in this drama (fun fact: registration for ballet classes went up while this was airing). Also L is very sweet and you'll totally root for them (even if it gets a little wonky toward the end)
Tumblr media
My Love From The Stars: This super popular romance about an Alien that falls for a human isn't exactly a deity but his abilities are basically the same and it feels like the same dynamic.
Goblin: One of the most popular k-dramas of all time, this romance between a god and a human is iconic. Perfect? NOPE. Did I watch it 3 times? YUP!
Hotel Del Luna: This fantasy drama is about a 1300 year old owner of a guest house running a hotel for departed souls on their way to the afterlife. I was not into this drama as much as everyone else (I didn't ship the ship!) but it is very beautiful!
Kiss Goblin: A short web drama about a goblin who wants to become human. Silly and sweet, featuring my web drama bb In Hyuk before he got major roles!
Do Gumiho's count? They are nine tailed fox spirits so if they do...
My Roommate Is a Gumiho: Super cute rom com about a gumiho and a college student living together. I LOVED the second couple so much in this!
Tumblr media
Tale of the Nine Tailed: features gumiho (s) or nine tailed foxes that fall for a human. If you liked it, there's a season two, tho the romance IS with a mermaid so it's not specifically what you're asking for.
My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho: While very popular, I'll admit I haven't watched this yet! I just know it's a rom com with Lee Seungi
And of course Doom at your Service, and Bride of Haebak (which I do not recommend lol!)
Enjoy anon!

Hey! Not exactly a question, but a hint. I don't know if you like Korean series, but I remembered one that I saw a few years ago (and that I just realized) that is inspired by the Journey to the West. The name is A Korean Odyssey (or Hwayugi), I don't know if you know or have watched it, but I thought it would be worth talking about. The series has its own story, but it's easy to pick up a reference here and there from the book. Hope you have a great week.
Hello hello!
I haven't watched it nor have I heard about it! I will definitely check it out because I am a huge sucker for fantasy + romance (especially romance)! ✨
Thank you! I hope you have an amazing week too! 🔥
