This week’s episode, titled “The One Who Will Save Us All,” focuses heavily on what happens when the gravitonium-infused Glen Talbot gets a taste of new possibilities. Armed with the righteous motivation of sparing humanity from the onslaught of the alien Confederacy, Talbot quickly takes the lead on the whole invasion problem. Coulson, for his part, is sort of like the driving instructor in a car without a passenger break.

Because it turns out that having the power of life and death in your fingers doesn’t make the difference between right and wrong any easier to spot. (A powerful theme of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 5×20, in fact.) And even the strongest of heroes can be mislead by the right promise dangled from the right (blue) lips.

Talbot’s been on a wild ride in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5, and trust me, the changes will keep on coming.

Fight club

While Coulson has his hands full with Talbot-on, the rest of the team grapples with more mundane concerns. You know, getting the Zephyr into outer space, fighting off stray aliens, and… each other.

I’ll be frank. Daisy’s return to the Lighthouse in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.5×20 is not exactly a joyful homecoming — in fact, there are moments that make the tenser points of last week’s episode seem downright fuzzy in comparison.

Because, beneath the pressure of the timeline and the years of lingering trauma, between the fear and exhaustion and complete lack of answers, there are much deeper question at hand. What are these people willing to do to change (or NOT change) the future? What lines will they draw, consequences be damned? And what kind of people do these choices reveal them, fundamentally, to be?

Suffice to say, no two members of the team come up with quite the same answers in “The One Who Will Save Us All.”

Closing the loop

The timeline With only three episodes to go before season’s end, “The One Who Will Save Us All” finally begins to slot in some of those uncomfortable realities that make the future possible. That’s not to say that the path to Earth’s destruction gets all that much clearer (it does, but not by much!) But there’s a smell of the endgame in the air, adding weight upon weight, and no shortage of consequences, to every seemingly forgone decision.

When the world is about to end and an inscrutable timeline damn most of humanity, there’s really nothing better than spending some quality time with your crush. And that’s exactly what Deke attempts to do in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 5×20 — you know, because it’s been working out so well for May and Coulson, Mack and Elena, and Fitz and Simmons.

But it turns out that there are surprisingly touching moments to be had between a guy from the future and a gal with superpowers and the weight of the world on her shoulders. They might not be what you (or Deke) were expecting, but they are certainly there.

To ‘Infinity’ and the… present

In its typical twisty way, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 5×20 somehow manages to reference the events of Avengers: Infinity War without acting as a significant spoiler. But though the Avengers may be WAY too busy to think about (or remember) anyone from S.H.I.E.L.D., the unspecified dark portents of the MCU’s greatest battle is a remarkably effective goad in the episode.

Planted the seed of questioning the nature of reality and the philosophical implications thereof.

Seven Samurai

Though I’m not the biggest fan of Black and White films in general, this masterpiece far surpasses the limitations of its time and still presents a beautifully shot film that I can’t recommend enough. The film ends on a superficially happy note but once you start analyzing the implications for each of the characters you begin to realize it’s a lot more of a grey outcome, which I love.

Shin Godzilla

     Few movies capture Godzilla as he was originally intended - a metaphor for the destructive consequences of the unregulated and irresponsible use of nuclear technology, both weaponized and otherwise. More of an (un)natural disaster movie than anything else, but a damn good one. Godzilla itself is presented in a way that only Hideaki Anno could’ve brought to fruition.

     I don’t care what anyone says this movie is eternally funny.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day

     Another movie about the consequences of mismanaged artificial intelligence, this is another one that I watched hundreds of times growing up (despite the violence). It’s just the perfect sci-fi action-suspense piece with GOOD ‘OL ARNEY AT HIS BEST.

Hardcore Henry

     I watched this movie in theaters hella baked with a friend and it was...quite the experience. So much so that it always stuck with me and I just wish a Hotline Miami movie would be shot in this style.

The Brave Little Toaster

     I never looked at inanimate objects the same after this. Still debating if this falls under at least SOME subdivision of horror because some scenes in this thing are greusome and downright chilling.

Spider-Man: Far From Home - Review

SPOILERS BELOW!

Spider-Man: Far From Home is the latest film in the ever-expanding and equally successful Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Coming hot on the heels of Phase 3’s spiritual crescendo, this felt like a palette-cleansing epilogue whilst also setting up another several dozen superhero films.

As with 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, the action starts with the introduction of the central antagonist. Where Michael Keaton’s Vulture revenge and self-preservation driven motivations were laid bare in the opening scenes of Homecoming, Mysterio’s entrance raised questions worthy of the super-villain’s moniker.

Tom Holland is once again fantastic as Peter Parker, whose boyish characterisation of the MCU Spidey is a welcome change from the previous film adaptations. His acting range is solid, and his sincerity is almost overwhelming at times. He’s a perfect casting for Peter in a universe of strapping, manly god-like superheroes, and he bounces off every other actor in the film wonderfully. Peter and MJ’s hopeless teen romance is instantly recognisable and well portrayed; I can certainly relate to the fear and helplessness a teenage boy feels towards a girl he likes. Peter’s paralysis around MJ is equal parts adorable and frustrating, but I guess it’s meant to be that way.

Peter struggles throughout the film with the separation of himself and Spider-Man, something we’ve seen before in every iteration of the Spidey story. For most of the film he is longing to live his life as a teenager: chasing the girl, hanging out with friends and enjoying his summer vacation. Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury, however, has other ideas. Fury derails Peter’s plans by recruiting him to work with Mysterio to defeat the grumpy, other-wordly Elementals that have been plaguing various spots around the world. It’s later revealed that Fury (or not Fury) has been tampering with the kid’s vacation the whole time in order to get Peter to where Spider-Man needs to be. In working with Fury, Mysterio’s alter-ego Quentin Beck, played superbly by the ever-excellent Jake Gyllenhaal, soon charms his way to the cusp of the mantel left by Iron-Man.

Mysterio’s story seems pretty watertight at first: scary monsters from another dimension have been followed by a magic man to the MCU’s primary dimension (Earth-616) and are wreaking havoc on precise locations across the planet. Simple, right? Well, not quite. These Elementals were, in fact, holograms – given destructive powers by attack drones/overhead projectors. The fact that Nick Fury or anyone else at SHIELD didn’t know that Quentin Beck worked for Tony Stark, or maybe had a little Google when they first met him, is a little plot hole than I’m more than willing to ignore.

Were it not so blatant that Mysterio was not the wholesome, friendly hero he was pretending to be, the relationship between him and Spidey would have been akin to his close bond with the departed Tony Stark. Gyllenhaal and Holland’s chemistry is excellent, with the former playing the mentor role just as well as he hams it up for Mysterio’s big plotting monologue. Upon receiving the E.D.I.T.H. tech from Peter, Beck begins a grandiose and camp recounting of the events that led him and his band of Stark Industries outcasts to these actions. Anyone who knows anything about Quentin Beck from the comics, or even the classic Spider-Man 2 video game, knows that the fishbowl-headed menace is all too adept at misdirection and trickery.

The massive eye-roll that should have accompanied the portrayal of Mysterio as a hero in the trailer for this this film was proven right, with Mysterio conning all but Peter and MJ with his hi-tech drone-based illusions (technology that was first seen in Captain America: Civil War). The Elementals themselves were pretty dull, but then again, these were not the enemy; we’re not meant to be deeply compelled by their motives, they are holograms and as such as completely weightless, both physically and metaphorically.

The supporting cast in Far From Home all add to the joy of the film. Happy Hogan, played once again by the multi-talented Jon Favreau, does a lot of the heavy comedic lifting, aided by Jacob Batalon’s loveable Ned Leeds, Martin Starr’s gullible Mr Harrington and J.B. Smoove’s one-liner heavy Mr Dell.

Just when I thought that I’d experienced all of the joy that this film had to offer, the mid-credits scene pops up to quite literally blow my tiny mind. J.K. SIMMONS! ARE YOU KIDDIN ME!? Seriously, at 2.30am on a Tuesday morning, nothing could have got my adrenaline up that hearing Simmons shouting derogatory remarks about the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. Reprising his role as J. Jonah Jameson, a role he played so perfectly in the Sam Raimi trilogy, was the ultimate fan service. It almost overshadowed the huge revelation that Mysterio had essentially framed Spider-Man for the events of the film, whilst also revealing his true identity. The fact they did a slight fake-out with the breaking up of the video (His real name is P-…) before following through with the reveal was a nice touch.

Now the world knows that Peter Parker is Spider-Man! It’s hard not to compare this reveal with the end of 2008’s Iron-Man, where Tony Stark willingly exposed himself as the titular character. This is especially stark (pardon the pun) given that about 70% of the dialogue in this film related to Spider-Man replacing Iron-Man as the head of the Avengers.

The post-credits scene had similar consequences for future MCU films. It was revealed that Nick Fury and Maria Hill were actually our favourite Krull couple, Talos and Soren, for the entire film. Instead, Fury was living it up on a space station with the rest of the Skrull. Granted, I wasn’t as excited for this as I was for JJJ (J.K. SIMMONS!), but this felt like the opening of a door in to a more galactic based MCU. Whether or not this will be quite as successful are the first decade of MCU hits remains to be seen; the odds are very much in their Marvel’s favour!

All in all, I’m very glad I hauled myself out for the midnight showing of the latest Spider-Man film. As a big fan of the Raimi trilogy, for my sins, it’s going to take some time for me to fully embrace the MCU’s web-slinger as the king of the on-screen Spidey. That being said, I can appreciate that this is objectively the best Spider-Man film ever made – it did well to balance the loss of Tony Stark, the burgeoning romance of Peter and MJ, the recently-perfected MCU humour and mind-boggling CGI.
