ive literally written over 15k in speeding bullet fanfic thats gone Nowhere its ALL snippets and unposted and disjointed but i dont WANNA write oneshots i wanna write a STORY but at the same time its like UGHH WHY AM I NOT CONTRIBUTING anyway ask me for a random word in my writing and i'll give you the sentence that word is in i guess

maybe this is a 'hot take' for which i apologize but. i feel like fanart is a big aspect of this too- how different even is it to make 'rpf' of gerards stage characters as opposed to fanart of it. it's essentially only a different medium. keeping it separate from gerard (Person In Reality Who Has A Life) outside of (character he made up to have fun with) can also easily be an invitation for fans to have fun with it too. which is why a healthy relationship with it can and does bring good things. in theory i mean. ive never seen an mcr fanfic i really liked but :p

yeah i see what you mean, it's one of the reasons that the step from tumblr (or twitter) fandom to the ao3 tag feels like. quite an arbitrary place to draw the line? as if the same thoughts and behaviours are fine right up into they're intentionally put to prose - but images or even comics are okay, textposts discussing their emotions and states of mind as extrapolated from live shows or song lyrics, putting research into constructing timelines of their lives or compiling facts about them as people - even writing (sometimes quite detailed) sexually explicit posts/tags about them is common around here. i do a lot of these things too - i'm not saying they're inherently wrong or bad - but i genuinely don't see how they're any less prone to being disrespectful or invasive or comically removed from reality than a writer putting them in a situation lol. they all involve some level of assumption, scrutiny, and interpretation.

there are definitely valid arguments to make against engaging with rpf in a fandom sense! i totally respect that, and it's something i felt kind of ashamed/guilty about when i first got into mcr, so i understand the reservations. it's just that...the way i see it, i truly think those arguments just as reasonably apply to so much of what happens in any fandom involving real people. behaviours that are extremely common and far from unique to the online fan spaces of today, to the point where avoiding them is a more conscious decision than engaging in them. i respect if people do make that choice, but...that isn't any of us who are running mcr fanblogs yk? haha.

anyway yeah. i agree with you anon, i reckon most people's definition of what does and doesn't entail rpf is just a lot narrower than the reality. there's a lot of extremely beautiful, highly-skilled emotive fanart out there, for which i'm so appreciative! i 100% don't mean it as an insult when i say those often a different kind of rpf. so are the emotive posts about how much this tour means to all the guys, how happy they are, how much they love each other and how they're all friends. i'm not saying these things are untrue, i'm just saying they absolutely don't paint an unbiased holistic picture of real human beings and their genuine emotional states hahaha. neither does fanfiction. and i just think it's impossible to not realise that if you're engaging with fanfic in any kind of thoughtful way, as opposed to reblogging textposts about them on tumblr that also project a lot onto them, yk?

and okay. i also think "the bible/succession/velvet goldmine etc etc is rpf too! shakespeare wrote rpf!" is equally as reductive as "rpf is when fangirls write about band members boning each other." as always, there's just so much more nuance there. what does and doesn't make rpf is a lot more about intent, and if you're parasocially attached to these people as deeply as we all are, most of us just share that same intent. and from what i've seen (though in fairness this is the first real person fandom i've been in, and i only really talk to other adults) it tends to be the people actively engaging with fanfic who are a better at accepting how much of fandom is pure projection and assumption based on very limited information. and that acceptance is a huge part of having a healthier relationship with celebrities/bands/bandom (along with the conscious acknowledgement that these people don't owe us anything at all besides the shows we bought tickets for - least of all insight into their personal lives or private thoughts.)

like genuinely? free your minds. we're all making shit up based on the little parts we see, i think it's healthier and more fun to openly accept that. who cares what's real when we can talk about things in terms of narratives and arcs and metaphors - none of which truly exist in real life, which is infinitely complex and individual and messy. or, more precisely, who cares what's real as long as you know what isn't! and keep that stuff far far away from the real human people involved in the band.

Aches and Pains by Badwolf36 Rating: G     Category: Gen     ~2700 words Summary: In which Izuku isn't willing to admit how much pain he's in, and Mr. Aizawa is just as much of a softie for his students as he always is. I’m always SO WEAK to stories that deal with the very real consequences of breaking all of your bones. Poor Izuku. I enjoyed the details of how he’s feeling, the way that the reader’s awareness of his pain waxes and wanes along with Izuku’s (temporary distractions can only do so much, A+ for realism there). Also, soft Dadzawa while not mushy-ooc-Aizawa! Conclusion: I love this and also want Aizawa to make me hot cocoa when there’s storms and i cant sleep!! (sidenote, everytime i see this username my brain shorts out bc my old ff.net account was also Badwolf## lol)

My Neighbor Shouta-ro by Hound_of_Heaven Rating: G     Category: Gen     ~2,700 words Summary: Yamada Hizashi, on Christmas Eve of the year he turns 19, jokingly presents Aizawa Shouta, also 19, with a Totoro kigurumi. Everything that follows after is pure chance. Heeeeeeeeeck this is ADORABLE. I- You guys- this is so pure and so precious and so!! go read it, i died. such fluff.

Izuku is jumpy and anxious and stressed and i love it. That the way Izuku started out, and while i am eternally happy at how much his life and social reactions have already changed, stuff like that doesnt just disappear in even a year, so I love fics that address that and expound on all the progress that he would have to make behind the scenes. and having Aizawa as the catalyst to begin getting actual help? *chef’s kiss* This checks boxes and then proceeds to cover the page in checkmarks LOL

It sounds impossible—he’s never heard of a quirk that can be handed down like a family heirloom—but at the same time, it makes perfect sense. Midoriya’s inability to use his quirk at the start of the year. The strange, familial relationship between All Might and Midoriya. The slow malnourishment of All Might’s body, like his power was being siphoned away. “You’re …” Aizawa begins.“I’m All Might’s successor.” Midoriya’s proud but shaky voice rings clearly down the empty corridor. Aizawa finds out about One for All. Awwwwwwww yiiiiiiiissssssssss!!!!! reveal fic!!!! one of my all time fav tropes!!! Plus it expounds on some future theorys/possibilities(Spoilers!!!) and you get some great interactions between Izuku and Shinsou, and plenty of opportunities taken to wear out our already worn out catepillar-sensei. poor guy needs a break but would do anything for these kids. Incredible characterization, great feels!!

Those Hardest to Love Need it Most by DancingintheStorm Rating: T     Category: Gen     ~8,200 words Summary: Shouta gripped the phone tight enough to make the phone case groan. “So it’s true. Midoriya was Quirkless.”“Until soon before the entrance exam,��� Nedzu confirmed. “That’s not relevant now, though, because—““Relevant?” Shouta hissed. “Midoriya is barely functional, socially. He doesn’t trust any adult. He thinks the whole world hates him. He apologizes for everything except breaking the law, and I’m sure I can trace every single one of those things back to his Quirklessness. You call that irrelevant?”  Aizawa visits Aldera Junior High and finds out some disturbing truths. Yes. Just. Yes. Righteous anger abounds, local anxiety-child is told for the first time that his life has worth, more at 10 (I LOVE THIS ONEEE)

The Gaunlet and friendships and how memes tie the two together by averypassionateperson Rating: T     Category: Gen     ~3,500 words Summary: Shinsou walks into his first day in the Hero Course hoping to get politely ignored. He walks out having gotten into a sanctioned fistfight with the entire Bakusquad and a whole lot of new friendships. Also, memes are responsible for most of this. This fic is SOOOOOOOOO much fun. Always sure to bring a smile and honestly all I could want from a fic about Shinsou’s first day in 1A!!!

like light through a window by achievingelysium   (tumblr: @queenangst ) Rating: T     Category: Gen     1,139 words Summary: The first time Shouta sees what Hagakure looks like, it’s because she’s covered in blood. Coming from one of the best Dadzawa writers around, is a delightfully haunting fic centered on Hagakure!! The Dazawa is of course, spot on, the premise makes your heart ache as it plays out like a movie in your mind. So smooth to read, while so emotionally painful. Ouch. It is a fic with imagery that has stuck in my mind like a plant with deep roots, bc i keep thinking about it despite my too-much-fanfic-reading-adhd-muddled-brain. I feel like i had more to say but tumglr erased the paragraph i had originally written. D:   (side note, as i am keeping these posts to 10 fics... this fic came from her series of 30 min fics which you can find here on tumblr ao3  its an absolute goldmine of one-shots, go check it out)

a frozen pond, dark and deep by walking_through_autumn Rating: T     Category: Gen     ~3,800 words Summary: In the aftermath of Endeavour's battle against High End, Aizawa escorts Todoroki to his home for special leave, and they have a conversation that has been long in the making. (Or: Over two car rides and the mystery known as bubble tea, Aizawa divulges information, Todoroki returns the favour, and trust is built over unexpected similarities.) This fic felt just as quiet as the two characters it surrounds, which was really nice. Even deep emotional grieving can be quiet, since everyone feels things and reacts to things differently. It was a brilliant way to chip away at these character’s walls to let light shine through without creating an earthquake event to destroy the walls completely, you know? and it works off of canon so well. ah yes seeing the process of Aizawa realizing that hes has adopted another child is my fav    anyhow i enjoyed it very much!

but still my heart is heavy (with the hate of some other man’s beliefs) by honeyandsunshine Rating: T     Category: Gen     ~3,500 words Summary: Nemuri jerks a thumb to the side window, presumably the one with the best view of the front gates. When Shouta looks, a small crowd, all of which he can recognize from his class, are gathered around a sleazy looking man with a camera and a microphone. Half their quirks are activated. Bakugou and Todoroki are smoking. From the bushes nearby, a rather enraged stag emerges. As he gets up, Shouta just hopes they haven’t already killed him. Or:Class 1-A defends their own. Aizawa suffers, but looks after them anyways. I love how this doesn’t go the way you expect it to. and how much Aizawa loves and trusts his class full of gremlin heroes. The Dadzawa is so soft, his logic is sound, my heart aches, and i kinda want to cry. really, really, really great you guys

bend, don’t break by heyhamlet (tumblr: @hey-hamlet ) Rating: T     Category: Gen     ~4,100 words Summary: It started, as it always seemed to, on what was supposed to be a pleasant day. ---A Christmas shopping attempt gone wrong, Aizawa and Midoriya have to survive a strange nightmare quirk, all while trying to work out how to get out of there alive. Aizawa is injured, Midoriya is panicked. It's less a question of what could go wrong, but more what could go right. Another fic that has not left my soul since i read it. Some of it is truly terrifying in a way that I hope never haunts my own nightmares. and honestly isnt that reason enough to read it? While near death experiences bond people together well, nothing beats being trapped with someone in a nightmare that is feeding off of your deepest fears! If Aizawa wasn’t considering adoption before, he certainly is now. Found family before the monster finds you...0.o go read it, its a treat from another top notch writer!

Tbh I think part of the deep pondering of Archie is b/c he's not well-written like the other examples you're thinking of and it sucks, since there's so much potential there. If the show were well-written and able to explore his trauma in depth and gave him stories that were more coherent, it'd probably quelled by that content. But your monkey brain goes nuts b/c it knows it's being denied and that Riverdale will never actually give Archie the depth, insight, or stories his potential deserves.

okay i also agree with this despite going nuts like two answers ago over archie’s arcs because i feel like the show either a.) doesn’t advertise the depth they have to offer like they do with others or b.) doesn’t explore them at all, when it comes to the less... story-potent? aspects of his character, at least. a.k.a. the purgatory realm in which all my fanfics and fanvids take place, where all the consistent themes of bodily autonomy and image and self validation (or lack thereof) and identity come in. which is a whole other goldmine of thematic consistency that spans from his romantic relationships to his platonic and familial ones and also play into his story-potent aspects as well! this area is where i’m pretty sure the writers don’t even mean to be making this much sense, but whether they intend it or not, archie’s complicated relationship with his physicality has spanned from season one to season four. it’s just never expounded upon or utilized at best, and at worst thrown in archie’s face for the laffs or something yes this is about the grundy situation BUT archie’s complicated dynamic with his own body’s abilities reaches past more than just his sexuality, but it’s still brushed aside either way :/

Relationships for Bucky that would actually be interesting

Note: I do NOT necessarly mean “romantic” relationships. Though this could certainly help give a fanfic writer ideas.

Also, I’m going to copy-paste a few things from the Wanda and Tony entries, as well as the Winter-ships one. 

The guy whose parents he was forced to murder

I love Shuri, I worship Shuri, but Tony should have been the one to replace that arm, and you know why. What that would have done for their story arc. How much more powerful it would be than, rather than just “Oh BTW here’s an new arm yo.”

I’ll also drop here that Bucky knew Howard; Tony knows about torture and mental instability; both are psychotically protective of people they care about, both have colossal guilt complexes.

Tony supposedly has a conflicted friendship with Steve. Bucky supposedly is super protective of Steve. …………Fine. I’ll buy it. I can’t, actually, but I can pretend to. But Tony has far more reason to have a conflicted relationship with Bucky, and Bucky has ample reason to be protective of Tony. Basically, both’s supposed relationship with Steve would be far better used with each other. I think this is the basis of Winteriron, to be honest.

Basically you have these two goldmines of angst, played by brilliant actors, who have been given the angstiest possible connection to each other….. but there’s this red, white and blue wall of cardboard standing between them.

The other Hydra Guinea pig 

Again, I worship Shuri, but having her fix Buck’s brain and provide the new arm was such a cop-out. Tony should’ve made the new arm, for obvious reasons, and Wanda should’ve cured Bucky’s Hydra programing, or at least helped with it. (Maybe a combination of her mind-powers and Tony’s BARF tech) That is of course, after having to earn his trust. Bucky, if/when he learned her history, would likely despise her for a while, since she “volunteered” for the Hydra labs, and specialized in mind-control. In fact, did Bucky and Wanda perhaps already meet, back at Hydra? Was Wanda, or previous agents given similar powers, used in Bucky’s Winer Soldier programing?

On the other hand.... 

The Person who DID (for better or worse) fix his mind-control and give him his new arm 

Salty as I am about Shuri snagging the arm-replacement from Tony and the mind-fixing from Wanda and Mantis, I do still worship the ground she snarks on. Bucky already has a relationship of some degree with her, in canon. And I would like very much to see more of it. He needs some other friends besides Steve. 

The Guy Whose Story He’s Joined 

White Wolf is a “Black Panther” character in previous media, so God willing we’ll see Bucky became a vastly superior designated “chivalrous team leader who wants to help Bucky”  another hero’s sidekick. 

The other assassin for a sketchy organization 

Supposedly Ava Starr worked for Shield, but Nick Fury didn’t use her for the Avengers. Fans suspect it was Hyrda pulling her strings, as they were secretly running Shield all along. So Bucky and Ava might already have a history together, as partners on missions or as enemies. 

If you don’t ship it due to the age difference/shipping Bucky with someone else, there’s always the big-brother little-sister option. 

Also, both Ava and Bucky were known as “ghosts.” 

The Other Other Assassin From A Sketchy Organization

They dated in the comics. They fought in the past, in the movies. Nat already helped a friend with Mind Control issues. I never personally shipped it but I’d be a lot more invested in Bucky interacting with Nat than you-know-who. 

The Guy Who Leads a PTSD Group

...but the movies treat him like the Doubting Thomas sidekick to the “pure” and “noble”.... sorry getting offtrack. Anyway, I wasn’t into WinterFalcon, until remembering that Sam specializes in PTSD. I’m still personally not into WinterFalcon, but would love to see Sam help Bucky (and other Avengers) with PTSD. Also, they can bond over being Steve’s sane friends sick of his rash stupidity, and growing frustrated with his godlike reputation, being two of the only people who know what’s really going on behind the curtain. (Whether that’s a suffering Steve who needs their love or an asshole or both, I don’t care, because we’re not talking about Steve.)

MORE DAMN IT, I NEED MORE! 

Aside from the arm connection, Bucky also seems to be an animal guy. He takes care of goats to help recover from his trauma; he takes the name White Wolf, and was saved by a guy named Black Panther, and is maybe friends with another guy named Falcon. And then the above scene happens. 

Also, “We didn’t ask to be made!” 

And Rocket’s not the only Guardian Bucky should hang out with,. 

The Other Assassin Cyborg 

Captured, turned into science projects; given cyborg limbs--specifically, a robotic left arm!; trained to be assassins for one of the most evil institutions in their societies; have one adopted/surrogate sibling they rely on (Gamora, Steve); have both met the raccoon.

The Other Unwitting Pawn Who Helped a Villain Commit His Murders and who could help Buck with his mind-control issue 

Basically same relationship he’d have with Wanda, but with less trust issues, as Mantis was never with Hydra and was raised by Ego from a larva. (Though Wanda wasn’t exactly a grown-up either when she “volunteered” for Hydra, but I digress).

Hey Marvel, if you’re looking for something to do with Hawkeye, maybe have him help the other mind-control victim (though Hawkeye’s was microscopic compared to Bucky’s but still). Maybe the Bartons put Bucky up for a while as he gets re-integrated into American society (if he is pardoned, and doesn’t choose to stay in Wakanda) 

The Fellow Military Background Superhero Who’s Gonna Get Him Out Of The Soul Stone 

Both signed up for the U.S. military, “died,” was re-made into a super-human and trained in a new army that the old one knew nothing about, has amnesia, has a past with Nick Fury and (probably) Tony Stark, one is dusted/in the Soul Stone and the other is the key to saving everyone in the Soul Stone  

 The Other Former Villain Who Lives In His Heroic Adopted Brother’s Shadow   

The more I think of it, the more this seems like stretch outside of shipping. Still, imagine Loki piercing Bucky’s “armor” so to speak. (Not like that. I mean, unless it’s slash you’re writing. Then go ahead.)

Yes, it’s been 70 years. But Bucky was the oldest of four. All three of his siblings could easily be alive, maybe even one of his parents. At least cousins and nieces and nephews. Old friends from his life.

how would you describe your sense of humor? what are your favorite books, movies, genres? who are your fave artists, singers, creators? where do you draw inspiration from?

hello, anon :) these are quite the questions, lol. we might be here for a while.

1. i would describe my sense of humor as 1 part dry sarcasm, 1 part immature 12 year old boy who still laughs at fart noises, and 1 part dad jokes

2. books. i’m actually kind of embarrassed to admit that i don’t really read them much anymore. most of what i read these days is fic, but i still have books and authors that i love. tolkien, gaiman, david levithan, cormac mccarthy, murakami, francesca lia block, lev grossman, douglas adams. not very well-versed in female writers, so if anyone’s got recs, i’d be happy to receive them.

3.  movies. you probably don’t realize what you’re getting yourself into by asking me this lol. though, to be fair, i’ve stopped watching/paying attention to a majority of the film industry because it doesn’t excite me anymore. so, my list is composed of primarily older films, in no particular order: labyrinth, the dark crystal, the fifth element, in the mood for love, the adventures of priscilla queen of the desert, rocky horror picture show, the princess bride, pulp fiction, city of lost children, kontroll, a single man, empire records, heathers, les chansons d’amour, les enfants du paradis, like...every musical ever, most marvel movies, blade runner, oldboy, gone in 60 seconds, the dreamers, weekend (the gay one, obviously), gattaca, eastern promises, pan’s labyrinth, the big lebowski, the fall, stranger than fiction, jeaux d’enfants, everything jim jarmusch has ever made. i could go on, but i’ll leave it there.

i also watch a shit ton of anime, but that’s another rabbit hole for another time.

4. genres. if it’s sci-fi or fantasy, i’m usually already on board. except that most of the time it ends up being disappointing (at least in regards to film and television). these days, anything that isn’t heteronormative garbage, i guess. except that i kind of also love stuff like dumb action movies because i don’t have to use my brain. the classics will always be my faves, but all of these stories have already been told and the vast majority of everything that’s been coming out the last however many years is either boring or half-assed or a remake of something that did it better the first time.

5. artists. i feel like you’re calling me out with these things lmao. i honestly could not sit here and tell you which artists i used to love. not that i don’t still interact with art or appreciate it, it’s just different now. i like reading webcomics. the illustrators out there right now are killing it. highly rec this gorgeous little gem. line’s webtoon app is pretty much a goldmine. there’s something for everyone and you get to support independent artists just trying to do what they love. i also use pinterest a lot, to either keep track of art that i enjoy purely aesthetically or for story reference/inspiration.

6. singers/musicians. again, a deep dark rabbit hole lol. i’m gonna be pretty general here bc this is getting kind of long (sorry). i still listen to a lot of kpop and k-indie stuff, but i’ve rediscovered my love for the japanese music scene, so i’ve been hardcore into that lately. (if anyone wants recs, hit me up). otherwise it’s pretty random. i like most genres. i listen to a lot of osts, usually from video games. also, i have ella fitzgerald’s face tattooed on my arm if that tells you anything.

7. creators. lately it’s been anime and video games, tbh. i’ve found that the way i want to engage with content is more immersive and less passive these days, so video games are kind of hitting that sweet spot for me because it’s such a unique way of storytelling. and the narratives being told in anime have always resonated with me. the depth and complexity of the characters and the worlds they live in, not to mention the visual stimulation of diverse art styles. the way animation, of all kinds, can utilize composition and movement just really does it for me. doesn’t hurt that a lot of it is pretty gay, so. there’s that.

8. inspiration. i draw inspiration from everything. sometimes all it takes is seeing something in my daily life, just a small otherwise insignificant detail, and an idea forms and grows all on its own. i think a lot of my ideas stem from the things i find aesthetically appealing. music videos, an illustration, clothing, environment design, photographs of all types. it’s usually visual. but i also find inspiration in music and the narratives other people create. mostly because, as far as mainstream content is concerned, i want to create the versions of things that don’t currently exist the way i wish they did. it’s why we fanfic, you know? and not even just for the queer/poc representation. i feel like a majority of mainstream tv/film/whatever just really misses the mark.

4.Do you think your style has changed over time? How so?At one point i could either write something where something happens or i could write something where the characters have emotions and thoughts and internal depth but not both, and it would either be just the driest recounting of events interspersed with infodumps or just endless contemplation that went nowhere. I like to think i can balance the two a bit better now. (that’s a lie anything with significant plot has either been left to languish as WIPs or was lost before editing finished when my tablet died in 2015) And I’ve gotten a lot less humour oriented and a lot more smut oriented. the crack I wrote at age 13 will haunt me forever. Also? I understand now that I’m not oscar wilde and two sentences per page means my sentences are too goddamned long. I’m still not very interested in complex plot arcs but that’s more a shortcoming and laziness rather than a stylistic choice. Biggest change is that i write “fic” that adheres to the generic expectations instead of transformative works written by a fan that strictly isn’t “fic” fic. poetry and weird monologues and that kinda thing. i don’t go for the weird stuff anymore.

11.What kind of relationships are you most interested in writing?In terms of romance, I like relationships that are of people just so close to each other they could almost breach the inherent loneliness of the human condition. That’s why I like stucky with the shared life experiences and hannigram with the empathy and the mental manipulation and the ability to be in each other’s heads and that’s why I’m so into venom, which breaches that inherent loneliness both physically and mentally with bodysharing AND telepathy. In terms of gen I like found families and adopted families. 

14.You’re applying for the fanfic writer of the year award. What five fanfics do you put in your portfolio?

-Entwining because I luv that tentacle action-Breadgiver because I worked hard on that one and it’s got some interesting ideas even if the execution is questionable-The Wedding Singer, it’s under 7k but it’s one of the few things i’ve ever split into chapters-The End of All Things, it’s my one LotR fic in recent memory and it took a lot of effort to write the hobbits-Time (Perhaps You’re Smiling Now) a weird wildcard pick but i have many feelings about velvet goldmine and this conveyed some of themtbh I’m one of those people who loathe all their old stuff. Which is why 4/5 are from the past half year and all are from the past year. And smut expires even more quickly in my esteem than the other stuff, usually by the time I post it i’ve completely lost interest and faith. I write the other stuff for me and i write the smut for other people to read because it’s something easy to finish that I can contribute when I can’t write other stuff, and its a good way to suss out characters quickly. Even entwining is rapidly loosing the shine it had, mostly i still like it bc it’s recently finished and it’s got the mind meld stuff.
