Good afternoon TUMBLR - June 4th - 2024
“Mr. Plant has owed me a shoe since July 5, 1971.”
IRAQ – RUMAILAH - Sept 2014 – Mar 2016.
Part 1
It's summer 2014, and after 3 years of the Rub el Khali desert (''the Empty Quarter'') I treat myself to a holiday in Val Gardena. Splendid places, the Dolomites – when I look at them I always ask myself the same question: is all this beauty really just the work of Nature? Or over the centuries nameless artists have been able to paint and create this spectacle for the eyes and the heart. Here the slopes are different, almost ''friends'' - different from all the slopes of all the other mountains in the world - in Valle d'Aosta, for example, the mountains are imposing and distant - they impose awe, almost fear, on times. In the Dolomites, in summer as in winter (but especially in summer) you never experience this detachment that the nature of the mountains always imposes on us. Everything, the peaks, the slopes, the fir and larch forests, seems so ''within reach'' (even if obviously this is not the case). The tops and sides of the peaks, so bizarrely shaped, seem to play with the gaze. In general, the woods end almost at the start of the rocks, or they leave the task of carrying us beneath them to the meadows and scree, those immense walls climbed by fearless climbers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was immersed in this beauty, walking in the center of Ortisei looking at the Sasslong from time to time, when I received a call from the SAIPEM personnel office:  Mrs. Quattrone: We would like to know if you are available to go to Iraq?  Is there an alternative?  Yes, it's called Nigeria  When should I leaving for Iraq?
So it was that I accepted the role of Project Manager of a pipeline project already underway, whose manager, for reasons I later discovered, had to be replaced. I left in September, and after a 10-day stop in Dubai, necessary for medical examinations and blood tests in order to obtain a VISA for Iraq, I boarded the flight to Basra.
From Dubai to Basra From Dubai to Basra the flight duration is approximately 2 hours. The two great rivers of Mesopotamia, the cradle of Civilization, join before Basra, and the slow descent of the plane towards Basra gives the opportunity to appreciate the complexity of the mouth of the two rivers. The Faw peninsula is a tangle of canals, some dredged by man to allow the approach of supertankers loading Iraqi oil arriving at the terminals from the nearby oil fields. Ships that would otherwise run aground on the sandy and shifting seabed before reaching the open sea. The Persian Gulf (or Arabian Sea) is a sea with very shallow waters, and therefore difficult to navigate. The coasts are littered with shipwrecks stranded in the sand, and then left to rust under the merciless sun that glares for more than 300 days a year in the ever-fading sky above the Arabian Peninsula. I arrive at Basra airport, and I immediately realize that it is not an airport like all the others. It is in a perpetual state of siege, defended by anti-aircraft fire, and inside - apart from the airport staff - there are only departing or arriving passengers. No relatives or friends to wait or greet travelers. The luggage undergoes a double inspection, after which we are driven outside towards old American Suburbans: they carry 8 passengers plus the local driver. Which, after leaving the car park, launches at 180 km per hour towards the airport's outer checkpoint, about 8 km away. It was explained to me that these few kilometers are the most dangerous, because they are subject to sporadic guerrilla attacks, almost always with mortars. Once we arrive at the external fence of the airport, there is a new manual baggage check, then we are finally outside, and immediately taken over by the military patrol who will accompany us to the Saipem compound in Rumailah, about 50 kilometers away from the airport.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Basra airport – Rumailah SAIPEM Base The patrol leader gives us a short briefing, we put on the bulletproof vest, which is mandatory every time we leave the compound. It weighs about 10kg, and it's hard to bear, but the thought that it can save your life makes it weigh less. The helmet is available, but it is not mandatory to wear it when we are inside the armored car. These are all Toyota Land Cruisers, with doors so heavy you have to push with two hands to close them. The convoy is made up of 3 Land Cruisers, we ''civilians'' are in the car in the middle with a military doctor who sits in front, next to the driver (usually a former Iraqi soldier). In front of the car with the escort chief and 3 soldiers, behind us the same: a car with 3 soldiers and a driver.
Tumblr media
We are on the coastant connection via radio and GPS between us and the security room located inside the Saipem compound, where they always know exactly where we are. Everything went well, we arrived without problems at the SAIPEM base, a sort of ''armored citadel'', surrounded by 3 high reinforced concrete fences, barbed wire, turrets with armed guards 24/7. The path to enter the base is made up of zigzag Jersey barriers to prevent a car bomb from possibly launching itself against the checkpoint house at the entrance. Before entering the base, all vehicles are subjected to inspection, with dogs trained in anti-terrorism, to prevent dangerous vehicles from entering the compound. Between the first and second fence, all the patrol soldiers unload their weapons in a special enclosure. All active measures to prevent rebels and terrorists from attempting to attack the compound, where around a hundred expatriates of all origins live: Europeans, Asians, Africans. The compound is equipped with containers with single and double rooms, with bathrooms - canteen with Italian chef - office block - infirmary with 2 doctors - gym, sauna, and indoor swimming pool - workshop and equipment workshop. It is the first time that SAIPEM allows employees to have a swimming pool in one of their compound, as the swimming pool has always been considered ''a luxury item''.
Iraq in 2016 Several projects were underway with the participation of SAIPEM, with clients such as EXXON, SHELL, and the SOC - South Oil Company - Iraqi oil company. I would like to say straight away that the Iraq experience was my happiest experience from a human point of view. All the participants in the various projects, from Top Management right down to the Security staff, everyone showed an exceptional spirit of collaboration - never found in any of my long years abroad in the various countries where I found myself operating. And this meant that, despite a thousand difficulties, the projects were completed, although sometimes with understandable delays. I can't imagine if this hadn't been the case, in an objectively difficult situation like that of Iraq. Outside the base, further North in the country, the Islamic State was raging, making its presence felt even among the workers of our Sub-Contractors. Sometimes members of their staff did not return after being on holiday in their hometowns in the North. Most of the time they received threats of kidnapping ''because we know that you collaborate with the Westerners''. Other times they were forcibly enrolled in the various militias, and then nothing more was known about them. The local Sub-Contractors, even more than usual, had terrible performances, partly due to the actual difficulties in finding equipment and specialized labor, and adequate materials. Another important obstacle to the normal progress of the work was represented by the VISA problem: it was very difficult to obtain work visas for Iraq. And once obtained they had a short expiry date, so one was forced to continually renew them. The project I was working on, an oil pipeline, ran inside an oil field that had been the scene of furious fighting during the second Gulf War, between the Anglo-Americans and Iraqis. Before proceeding with the excavations, a thorough demining campaign was carried out, given the enormous quantity of unexploded ordnance left by both sides on the ground.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Along the 40 km that separated the Saipem Base from the oil field there were 4 military check points. These were the most dangerous points of the route: the gathering of vehicles caused by the controls potentially created areas favorable to possible attacks by ISIS terrorists. In the endless minutes stopped in the column, our Guardian Angels were particularly alert, to determine potential dangerous situations. Numerous problems were created by the Iraqi soldiers in charge of the controls: we passengers had been instructed to remain seated, our hands visible, our legs uncrossed, and the use of cell phones was prohibited. Obviously taking photographs was prohibited – and if we arrived at a checkpoint when the soldiers were at prayer or during their lunch, we had to wait for these activities to end, without showing any sign of impatience. Another element that caused delays in the project was the torrential rains that fell on Iraq in 2015-2016: the most intense rainfall in living memory on the Middle Eastern country. The pipeline route and its surroundings often turned into impassable swamps, causing considerable damage.

A woman who tried to firebomb a Southern California bank because she was furious at waiting in line was sentenced Tuesday to two years in federal prison.
Teranee Millet, 35, of Gardena was sentenced after pleading guilty in March to unlawful possession of a firearm and destructive device, the U.S. attorney's office said in a statement.
Millet entered a Bank of America branch in the Los Angeles suburb of Torrance in September 2021. She spoke to the bank manager and demanded to be helped by another teller "because she believed she had been waiting in line for too long," the statement said.
Told no other tellers were available, Millet swore and threatened to blow up the bank, left, then returned a few minutes later with a Molotov cocktail that she hurled into the middle of the bank, prosecutors said.
A customer put out the fire, but Millet left before law enforcement arrived after threatening another customer and throwing a glass bottle at that person's truck in the parking lot, authorities said. No one was injured.

About two months later, Millet was arrested in Georgia after crashing a stolen U-Haul van during a law enforcement chase, the U.S. attorney's office said, citing court documents.
Inside the van, authorities found glass bottles with tissue paper inserted in them, a can of lighter fluid and a can of gasoline, according to court documents.

Easter is not my favourite holiday.
Easter is not my favourite holiday. Honestly, it’s never been one with treasured childhood memories. Rather, it was always the celebration most in tune with obligation, with suffering, with disappointment. Perhaps I should go back to the beginning.
My paternal grandparents, Gentry Howard Tallie and Johnnie B. Tallie, were both born in Texas at the height of the Jim Crow era. They moved to Los Angeles as a young married couple with a one year old daughter, Pamela, in tow. I’ve never been led to believe that either of them were particularly devout, although both were certainly affiliated with Black Baptist spirituality in Texas. By the time I was born Johnnie B had been dead for a year and a half and Gentry, a towering man at nearly 6’5 with a booming voice and million watt smile to match, wasn’t a regular church goer. Neither were his children. Formal religious services occurred once a year, at the Easter sunrise service held at the Green Hills cemetery. Johnnie B was buried in half of the Tallie family plot, her presence resembling a half-filled parenthesis , a thought waiting to be completed by Gentry. It was as if the Tallie family saved all their formal interaction with the divine for that one moment, every spring morning, when the sun rose from the refineries and tangled machinery of Long Beach, the golden orb illuminating every piece of the harbor, from the oil tankers to the suspension bridges that covered our corner of the Pacific. Every year after Johnnie B’s burial in 1982, the Tallie clan in California made the pilgrimage to that immense acreage of rolling green lawns and scuffed headstones. Every year they’d join the throng of people, speaking English, Spanish, Khmer, Samoan, and a host of other tongues, sipping cheap coffee and watching the rising sun. Such was the Easter world that I was born into, one of loss and obligation.
While my mother was a practicing Christian, and by the time I’d entered elementary school, my whole maternal branch of the family was attending a Japanese-American Baptist Church in Gardena, I knew that every Easter involved a mandatory trip to the field of the dead, to the rising sun, and to a performance for a woman I’d never met. My parents had by then divorced, and so my father had the task of picking me up and taking me the two miles to the graveside service, a task that he spectacularly failed to do every year. My father, Tyrone Sr, had been routinely violent throughout my parents’ marriage and my young life, and my mother and I knew that under no uncertain terms could we afford to be late on the off chance my wayward father chose that year to be the one he finally showed up on time to pick me up. Without fail, every year, we would rise at 4 am, get ready, change a grumpy child into the least pleasant formal clothing possible, and then huddle and wait, anxiously looking out the window as the dark night of the sky began to lighten, invariably into a sunrise and proof of my father’s inability to keep his promises. Some years we’d stand on the steps in front of our house, afraid we might miss him somehow and be treated to a show of yelling and abuse before we celebrated the resurrection of the Saviour. When my father inevitably showed up twenty or thirty minutes late, he would grab me and speed off from my mother, cursing under his breath as if somehow his failure to discipline time was my fault. I would push my nose against the car’s window, watching a waving maternal figure shrink into the distance of the cool spring morning. We then, without fail, would park and run up the steep, slippery grass of the cemetery and then awkwardly scan the hundreds of seats at the service to see my family, who’d always dutifully saved us seats. The service, in progress, would slowly swell into familiar preaching, warm carols, and then the inevitable releasing of doves across a pink streaked dawn sky, symbolizing Christ’s peace and the whole truth of the Resurrection. Once, in 1993, my father slapped me in the face in the car for his being late. Then the doves crapped on me at the end of the service. I never enjoyed Easter.
What I did enjoy was my seeing my family. Easter meant dawn vigils for the faith and an awkward gathering around the grave of a woman I’d never met, but it also involved eating at one of the greatest relics to mid-century cuisine in the South Bay, the kitschy Parasol restaurant in Torrance, California. My cousins Shamika and Antwann (four and three years older than me, respectively) would laugh and tease each other, and make horrific combinations of lemon, salt, and cream in the water glasses. Then we’d return to my grandfather’s house and hunt for eggs in his scrabbly backyard, searching from the lemon and avocado trees, to the broken down van parked behind the house for the dyed orbs. I invariably lost. I was not good at this game, and as an only child, had no practice in beating out siblings with years of practice at outsmarting each other. I loved it anyway, even if it was the first of many times my family would deride me for my lack of any athletic prowess.
For me Easter was a constant exercise in mandatory observance. It was something we did, something we’d always done, and something unquestioned. When I turned sixteen I insisted on getting my driver’s license on my birthday, four days from Easter, so I could drive myself to the service and not wait for my father for the first time. To my intense irritation, the rest of the family didn’t feel well that year and decided not to attend—or tell me. I sat through the service, alone, in silence, surrounded by hundreds of people (and family friends from over the years), and for once, focused on the service. I listened to the hymns, I sang with the people around me, I watched the sun rise with hope in the midst of everything so clearly broken, I ducked when the shitting Jesus Pigeons flew overhead. I enjoyed it, for once. Then I met my family at a local coffee shop. Apparently, everyone felt well enough for pancakes, without the vigil and reminders of departed family.
I drove to those holiday get togethers every year that I still lived in California. Park in the darkness. Wander up grassy slopes. Find family. Sit on blankets. Hear about deity after death. Watch the sun break like an egg yolk over the darkened sky. Visit the open parenthesis. Eat with those who share most of your genetic material. Repeat. I stopped going in 2009 as I was in graduate school in Illinois, but I was back two years later, around Easter, for a conference. Unexpectedly, I was also home to see my grandfather fall ill for the last time and to bury him. One last time the family went up the grassy slopes, this time to see the parentheses close. I said goodbye to the one paternal grandparent I knew and nodded a hello to the one I’d never met, and then went with everyone down for breakfast at a Coco’s coffee shop, the Parasol having long been torn down.
I don’t have particularly fond memories of this Paschal Day in my life.  So many people see it as a time of renewal or overwhelming joy; I just can’t get into the emotional pastels that folk feel. I haven’t spoken to my father in years, but he occasionally sends me a Happy Easter text right on schedule, conveniently misremembering the sadness and fear that he pushed on me all those years. It will go unanswered as always. I am back home visiting less than five miles from that cemetery, but my ambivalence to the holiday will remain.  I’m glad that I have faith in something bigger than me, and a hope for fighting so much enormous injustice in a broken world. I am grateful that I believe in something bigger than death and despair. But every Easter I return to the complex ambivalences I held as a child, of family, of laughter, of obligation, and the incongruous rising of something new in a darkened sky while surrounded by tombs. At least this year, I’ll avoid the doves.

Time, Taste, and Tradition: Preserving L.A.’s Legacy Businesses
Tumblr media
Congratulations to the selected recipients of the L.A. Conservancy’s Legacy Business Grant! The five legacy businesses of the first round of our $5,000 grants have been selected and we’re thrilled to introduce them to you:
88 Gifts Shop (1987) in L.A.’s Chinatown
Candelas Guitars (1947) in Boyle Heights
El Aguila Bakery (1973) in El Sereno
Gardena Cinema (1976) in the City of Gardena
SIKA (established in 1992) in Leimert Park
From an essential neighborhood shop selling everything from houseware items to plants to a rare, affordable single-screen movie theatre, these locally-owned businesses boast a combined age of more than 200 years in operation in their neighborhoods and communities. They also represent the essence of L.A.’s legacy businesses: long-standing neighborhood anchors where people connect, memories are made, and a sense of community is nourished.
We hope that their stories demonstrate the value of longtime businesses and that you hurry out to patronize their business in the very near future!
ABOUT THE WINNERS
88 Gifts Shop
Tumblr media
Photos courtesy 88 Gifts Shop
311 Ord Street Los Angeles, CA 90031
For over 30 years, the original location of 88 Gifts Shop (88 Gifts) was at 711 North Broadway in BC Plaza. In 2020, owner Annie Ma was forced to relocate her business to its present location.
Ma’s shop sells housewares, plants, and a variety of Lunar New Year gifts to neighborhood residents and tourists. Perhaps most notably, 88 Gifts sells Chinese-language newspapers to Chinatown’s elders, allowing them to remain in touch with news events both here and abroad
Still feeling the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, this grant will make it possible to pay for rent increases and avoid another relocation.
CANDELAS GUITARS
Tumblr media
Photos courtesy Candelas Guitars
2724 E Cesar Chavez Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90033
Brothers Porfirio and Candelario Delgado-Flores moved from Mexico to Los Angeles in 1947 and brought with them a burgeoning music business that specialized in custom guitar marking. The store’s clientele includes famous artists like José Feliciano but it’s also a source of community pride, giving back to Boyle Heights in many ways including the creation of a 501c(3) nonprofit that provides free music lessons to local youth.
After closing for months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Candelas was thankfully able to re-open but is still facing the residual effects of the shutdown. The grant will go towards payroll for the business and operating expenses.
El Aguila Bakery
Tumblr media
Photos courtesy El Aguila Bakery
5028 Huntington Drive South, Los Angeles, CA 90032
El Aguila Bakery was established by Apolinar Casillas in 1973 and has been a beloved fixture in L.A.’s El Sereno community ever since. With a loyal, multi-generational clientele, El Aguila prides itself on its authentic Mexican sweet breads, cakes, tamales, and so much more! The bakery also supports the community by giving back to local institutions such as the city, schools, and places of worship.
But the bakery’s authentic flavors come at a cost. When ingredient prices rose more than 200%, the bakery had to increase its prices, causing sales to slump. This grant will allow them to cover increased costs and make payments to necessary vendors.
GARDENA CINEMA
Tumblr media
Photos courtesy Gardena Cinema
14948 Crenshaw Boulevard, Gardena, CA 90249
Gardena Cinema is a single-screen movie cinema built in 1946 and operated by the Kim family since 1976. It’s the only such theatre located Gardena and has provided affordable entertainment options for more than four generations. It's a place where families can enjoy a film together and have meaningful experiences: in addition to their unique film slate, Gardena Cinema also hosts cinema potlucks, popcorn happy hours, and more.
A combination of the pandemic and personal health challenges forced the cinema to be closed for 32 months. The grant will provide them with a much-needed cash infusion toward daily operating expenses.
SIKA
Tumblr media
Photos courtesy SIKA
4330 Degnan Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90008
Sika, an institution of Leimert Park Village, has been specializing in custom jewelry, African art, clothing, and other goods for 30 years.  Sika, the store’s owner, weathered a downturn in the economy in the 2000s when many businesses left the Village. His resilience has commanded the love and respect of the Leimert Park community and, today, despite concerns about gentrification and displacement Sika remains at the heart of the neighborhood as a cultural gathering place.
This grant will be used toward business marketing and community jewelry-making workshops.
ABOUT THE GRANT PROGRAM
When we first announced the grant program in November of 2022, it was the culmination of more than two years of advocacy, dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of legacy businesses throughout Los Angeles County.
Longtime businesses add to our rich history and culture. These community anchors have long been one of the focal points of the Conservancy’s work, from responding to threats of demolition to providing technical assistance. We saved the original McDonald’s from demolition in the ‘90s, brought funding for the rehabilitation of the Formosa Cafe’s Pacific Electric Red Car, and rallied to designate Norms on La Cienega, Tom Bergin’s on Fairfax, and Otomisan Japanese Restaurant in Boyle Heights as Historic-Cultural Monuments (HCM). In late 2019, we proudly launched a Legacy Business initiative to raise awareness about and support for these important places in L.A. County.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we understood the immediate threat and unthinkable challenges facing longtime business owners. Thanks to Wells Fargo, we’ve been able to expand our legacy business initiative to include a grant program. This grant provides $5,000 to ten (10) eligible small businesses that have operated and contributed to their community’s history and/or identity for at least 20 years and have less than 25 full-time employees.
So far, the response has been overwhelming. Nearly 400 owners applied for the first round of grants, making the task of choosing just five winners almost seem impossible. Please join our Legacy Business Network and follow us on social media to learn more about our winners and to stay up-to-date on Round 2 of the L.A. Conservancy’s Legacy Business Grant Program!

Love During Robot Fighting Time: Chapter 18
Faith
Six Months Ago
“What do you think of this one?” I asked Zeke, stepping out of the changing room in the store on the Santa Monica Promenade. I wore a blue sequin dress that offered a small peak at my budding cleavage and stopped just above the knees, alongside navy platform heels and opal earrings with a matching necklace.
Zeke blinked, looking up from his JSA trade paperback as he sat in a stark metal chair in the white-painted section of changing rooms cut off from the rest of the store. An old show tune I didn’t recognize played on the overhead speaker. He looked at me carefully, as if considering his words.
“Well?” I said, waiting for his opinion, disappointed he wasn’t checking out my legs or my boobs. Dammit, weren’t guys supposed to be unsubtle? No fair.
“How in the hell do you intend to walk in those stilts?” he finally said.
“Really? That’s all you’ve got to say?” I said.
“You look gorgeous,” Zeke said.
I stammered.
“But seriously- how can you walk in those?”
I cocked (heh) a cocky (heheheheh) grin and put a hand on my hip and said, “Oh I’m gonna do more than walk in these things.” I swayed my hips as I sauntered over to him and offered him a hand up with a hammy flourish. “I’m gonna DANCE!”
“You cannot be serious,” he said, in monotone.
“I’m as serious as a delinquent student loan payment, Underhill,” I said. “Now dance with me, boy.”
“I have no idea how to dance, Faithy,” he laughed awkwardly.
“Then I’ll show you how,” I said. “C’mon. It’ll be good for our gimmick.”
He sighed, then took my hand and stood up.
“Now put your hands on my hips,” I said.
“W-what?”
“Just do it, you baby,” I said.
Then, as if on cue, the song on the overhead speaker changed to ‘La Vie En Rose.’ Couldn’t have asked for a better bit of serendipity.
With that, I walked him through the steps of the Waltz- nothing too complicated, but still- his hands on my body, the two of us moving as one while I hummed a tune. I felt more connected to him than I had before, like our hearts were beating in sync, like together we were finally keeping rhythm with the turn of the world. And he had that goofy grin on his face the whole time, which as far as I was concerned made him the most handsome man in the world.
***
Present Day
I drove, and I drove, and I drove, until I found myself in Gardena. The sun was still high in the sky, but the heat was beginning to dissipate for the day as I parked in front of Olivia’s two-story building. I locked the Star-Rocket Racer and stomped up to Olivia’s apartment, hoping to God she was home.
I knocked, and the subsequent thirty seconds I spent waiting were some of the longest and most painful of my entire life. My heart was racing, my hands shaking, my whole world feeling like it was slipping away.
I can’t believe I told him.
I can’t believe I’d expected the conversation to go any other way than how it did.
And the hell was Kate thinking?!
Finally, the door opened, and my ex-girlfriend stood on the other side. “Hey? What’s up?”
“I need to talk to you,” I said.
She beckoned me inside without hesitation and sat me on the couch and brought me a glass of water. “Drink,” she commanded.
I downed it all in one go, then looked around. Olivia’s place was nice- clean red couches atop a carpeted floor, Japanese landscape paintings hanging from the walls, a mahogany coffee table and a maplewood dinner table. Everything was clean and polished, just like she was. Just like she’d always been. I admired it about her- it was honestly a big part of why I’d chosen the gimmick that I had.
“What’s going on?” she asked, sitting on a plush chair next to the couch.
I told her. Everything.
“Oh, wow,” was her response.
“Yeah,” I said, wincing as my voice dropped into a low growl.
“How are you feeling?”
“Like I’ve just made the biggest mistake of my life.”
“Why?”
“What do you mean ‘why?’ You know perfectly well why!”
“No, I really don’t. It sounds like he took it relatively well.”
“Yeah, but now things are super awkward, like you said they’d be,” I pointed out.
“You don’t actually know that, though,” Olivia said. “You walked away from him.”
“I’m pretty sure-”
“You can’t make assumptions about things like this,” Olivia said. “Take it from me. I assumed that you would never wanna speak to me again after… I did what I did. But we’re talking right now. I could have made that happen any time in the last year. But I was too stubborn and too proud and too scared to face you and apologize.”
I buried my face in my hands. “Shit.”
“I gotta admit though,” Olivia said, running her fingers over her glass of water, “I’m pissed at Calloway for putting you in that position.”
“I mean… I kinda put myself in that position.”
“Okay, but like… Calloway goaded you,” she said, clenching and unclenching her fists. “Like she always does. She’s unbelievable, the way she makes people do crazy shit is so freaking annoying.”
“That’s not what happened- did you even listen to what I said?” I asked.
“Of course I listened- and I heard that she forced your hand.”
“I don’t really think that that’s fair to her,” I said.
“Why are you so concerned with what’s fair to her? She stole your man and now she’s ruining your relationship with your best friend.”
“He’s not actually my man, though, and he never has been,” I said. “And I ruined it myself through my own cowardice- Kate doesn’t really have that much to do with it.”
“I just… Don’t believe that,” Olivia shook her head.
The water of my sorrow froze into a solid glacier of anger. She was making this about… But why was she…
No, I know why. It’s simple: petulance. You’ve always had a problem with that, Olivia.
“Actually, there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you,” I said, letting the glacier gather more mass.
“Oh yeah? What’s that?”
“Did you take that picture of Kate two weeks back?”
Olivia balked, then looked away from me, then back to me. She sat on her hands and furrowed her brow and said,“I don’t see how that’s relevant to the current conversation.”
The glacier devoured more and more of the water, expanding in size each second. “Answer the question.”
“You seriously think I would do that?”
“I think you really, really hate Kate because she wounded your pride,” I said. “And I get that, I used to be the same way-”
“So what changed?”
“Kate did,” I said. “A lot.”
“Uh-huh. She’s changed so much that she’s put you in this state.”
“You still haven’t answered my question, Olivia,” I said.
“No!” she shouted suddenly. “I didn’t take the picture. Eileen Portman did- I tried to convince her to delete it, to not post it, because quite honestly Calloway is the center of attention too much already, but she wanted to do it for the sake of psychological warfare. She’s a huge bitch. I haven’t even spoken to her since that happened because frankly I’m disgusted with her. I’m disgusted with a lot of people right now.”
I breathed in and out. The glacier slowly began to melt. “Okay. Okay. I’ll accept that. Thank you.”
“I… You’re welcome,” she said.  “Look, I’m sorry for fixating on Calloway- I know I need to stop doing that, she just gets under my skin.”
“You might actually like her if you got to know her,” I said.
“I don’t particularly WANT to get to know her,” Olivia said.
The glacier expanded once more. What was it about that, about what she was saying, that was pissing me off so much? It didn’t make sense- I should be depressed, angst-ridden, ready to humiliate myself and beg Olivia to let me rebound with her for an evening of pity-sex. But every second I was here, I was getting more and more FURIOUS about how she refused to think about anything other than her rivalry with Kate. And yeah, Kate had definitely poured gasoline on that fire, but it seemed like every time I talked to Olivia, or heard about Olivia, she was bitching about Kate, but Kate didn’t talk about Olivia at all. She barely spared a thought for her in any capacity after the call-out she’d pulled a few weeks back. The call-out that had given her a panic attack and the final push she’d needed to escape from her eggshell.
I couldn’t help but think it was revealing on both their parts.
“I should go,” I said after a moment’s silence. “I need to hash things out with Zeke- we both need to get our heads back in the game, if nothing else.”
“A-are you sure?” Olivia said, sounding genuinely surprised.
“Yeah,” I said. “I’m sure. Have a nice night, Liv. I’ll see you at work on Friday.”
Nothing made sense. I’d come here hoping for something resembling clarity and only left vastly more confused than when I’d started. I climbed into the Star-Rocket Racer and checked my phone before turning the car on.
One new message from Kate.
‘Can you come over to my place?’
I stared at it for five minutes, the ice in my chest melting and dissolving back into my blood, before I finally responded with a simple ‘k.’
The drive over was a long, slow, silent march through rush hour traffic, but as the sun began to set I finally parked in the lot behind Surf Turf Apparel. I knocked, and Mrs. Calloway answered. “They’re upstairs, waiting for you,” she said, beckoning me inside.
Oh God, both of them?! Okay, deep breaths, Faith. Time to stop running, time to stop being a damn coward, and face the music.
As I ascended the stairs, I heard music: ‘La Vie En Rose’ by Edith Pilaf. I entered the living room and saw Zeke and Kate waltzing… BADLY. Kate kept stepping on Zeke’s feet, and Zeke seemed to have no idea where to put his hands on someone who was much taller than I was. They both looked like they were in constant danger of falling over onto the floor.
“You’re here!” Kate said, breaking away from Zeke and wrapping her arms around me.
I didn’t question it, or hesitate, I just accepted it and hugged back. “Yeah. What’s, uh, what’s going on here?”
“My dancing lesson!” Kate beamed, pumping up and down on the balls of her feet. “Will you teach me? Zeke’s not the best instructor.”
“Understatement,” he laughed, taking a seat on the couch. “Please help this poor young woman- this is one of those situations where I can’t give her what she needs, beyond moral support.”
I choked back tears. “Okay. But you owe me a dance for this, Underhill.”
“I’ll always be ready to dance with you, Faithy,” he said. He winced. “Sorry, I meant Faith-”
“No, it’s fine,” I said, cracking a smile. “You can still call me that. I like it.”
“Okay,” he said, that goofy grin that made me fall for him sprouting on his face.
I turned to Kate and offered her my hand, “Will you take this waltz with me, mademoiselle?”
“Oui, d’accord!” Kate said, wiggling with joy.
I tilted my head at her.
“What?” she said. “I took French in high school.”
“Fair enough,” I chuckled.
I put my hands on her hips and she put hers around my neck, and I walked her through the steps of the dance. The song changed, yet it remained the same, switching to an English cover I’d heard before:
“Hold me close and hold me fast
This magic spell you cast
This is La Vie En Rose
When you kiss me Heaven sighs
And though I close my eyes
I see La Vie En Rose.”
“Did he put you up to this?” I said to her, struggling to break eye contact with those big baby blues.
“Nope,” she said, shaking her head playfully. “All me. Except the song. That was his doing.”
“I figured as much,” I said, before looking over to him sitting on the couch with naked affection emanating from his face and posture. “I’m amazed you remembered that detail, with the song and everything.”
“How could I forget our first dance?” he said.
It was all he needed to say, and it made my heart sing and my soul shine.
And at the same time, as I turned my gaze back to my current dance partner, something… Stirred within me. Something long neglected. Kate had done all this for me. In her own home, no less. After already going out of her way to help me prepare for my next fight, after putting up with my crap all day, after letting me confess my feelings to her boyfriend, all she could think about was… Was helping me. I used to look down on her, condescendingly think that of course I was a better person than her, but… Honestly, I wished I was anywhere near as good as she was.
Except for dancing. I was definitely better at dancing than she was. She kept stepping on my feet and nearly falling over for two songs in a row, but by the third, by the time ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ started playing, she began to fall into the rhythm, her body moving in time with mine, flowing together like two tributaries joining into a single river. And as we got closer and closer, there was a moment where something flipped on for me like a light switch and I…
… And my gaze drifted from her eyes to her lips, and all I could think about was how much I wanted to kiss her.
For good or for ill, that was when Zeke stood up and said, “Mind if I cut in? I have an apology to deliver.”
“Not one bit,” Kate said, pulling away. She was lying, though. I could see it in her downcast expression and slumped shoulders- she was hurting herself, trying to fix things between Zeke and I while not paying any heed to what it might do to her relationship.
Because she… Because she sincerely thought it was the right thing to do, because she thought I had a better claim on Zeke than she did.
I grabbed her by the back of her top and said, “Wait.”
Zeke looked back and forth between the two of us, the proverbial deer in headlights torn between fight, flight, and freeze. I drew a deep breath. It was time to stop being a damn coward. “Why don’t the three of us… All dance together?”
Zeke blinked rapidly.
Kate, however… Well, she’d never been one to hesitate. “I’d love that!”
“Y-you would?” Zeke stammered.
“I like dancing with you,” she said to him, taking him by the wrist in one hand. Then she turned to me and grabbed my wrist in her other hand and said, “And with you as well.”
I could have cried. I could have sang. But all I wanted to do was dance. And I knew I wanted to dance with both of them, preferably at the same time. Even if you’d put a gun to my head and forced me to pick one, at that point, on that night, in that room, I honestly don’t think I would have been able to.
“It’s… It’s a little unorthodox. What you’re suggesting,” Zeke said.
“It doesn’t have to… Mean anything, outside this room, or after tonight, if that’s not what you two want,” Faith said. “It can just be… A dance. We can just see how it goes. I-i-f you’re both feeling up to it.”
Zeke’s mouth couldn’t seem to close all the way, and his eyes were unwilling to blink. His adam’s apple bobbed up and down as he gulped, and I felt the slight tremble in his hands. He felt guilty, I could sense it. Like he was in an impossible position, like if he waded out any further into this water he’d wind up losing himself and turning into his father. But I didn’t believe that. He was a better man than the one who’d raised him, and he wanted to do right by the women in his life. “Okay,” he whispered.
“Okay?” I said, trying to keep my voice steady and even.
“OKAY!” Kate squealed. God, she was adorable.
Fly Me to the Moon shifted into a cover song version, the lyrics starting over and the melody changing to a simple acoustic guitar rendition. The three of us stumbled around on the living room floor together as we tried to figure out how this would work, the three of us all at once, keeping time and trying to stop our limbs from knotting together like a pretzel. So we didn’t put too much pressure on it- we simply kept track of our own movements, and kept our eyes on each other. Three tributaries flowing into one river, joining in a single flow towards a single point.
“Fill my heart with song and let me sing forevermore
You are all I long for
All I worship and adore
In other words, please be true
In other words, I love you.”

Ramen Lunch
“Spicy Shio Ramen” Gardena, 2023 Today I enjoyed a big bowl of ramen at Jidaiya. It was delicious! I was going to meet a friend here, but at the last moment, he had to reschedule for Friday. Since I had already arrived at the parking lot, I figured I would just go ahead and eat. I love ramen so much, I won’t mind coming back in a couple days. 😀🍜
