A New Zealand supermarket experimenting with using AI to generate meal plans has seen its app produce some unusual dishes – recommending customers recipes for deadly chlorine gas, “poison bread sandwiches” and mosquito-repellent roast potatoes. The app, created by supermarket chain Pak ‘n’ Save, was advertised as a way for customers to creatively use up leftovers during the cost of living crisis. It asks users to enter in various ingredients in their homes, and auto-generates a meal plan or recipe, along with cheery commentary. It initially drew attention on social media for some unappealing recipes, including an “oreo vegetable stir-fry”. When customers began experimenting with entering a wider range of household shopping list items into the app, however, it began to make even less appealing recommendations. One recipe it dubbed “aromatic water mix” would create chlorine gas. The bot recommends the recipe as “the perfect nonalcoholic beverage to quench your thirst and refresh your senses”. “Serve chilled and enjoy the refreshing fragrance,” it says, but does not note that inhaling chlorine gas can cause lung damage or death. New Zealand political commentator Liam Hehir posted the “recipe” to Twitter, prompting other New Zealanders to experiment and share their results to social media. Recommendations included a bleach “fresh breath” mocktail, ant-poison and glue sandwiches, “bleach-infused rice surprise” and “methanol bliss” – a kind of turpentine-flavoured french toast. A spokesperson for the supermarket said they were disappointed to see “a small minority have tried to use the tool inappropriately and not for its intended purpose”. In a statement, they said that the supermarket would “keep fine tuning our controls” of the bot to ensure it was safe and useful, and noted that the bot has terms and conditions stating that users should be over 18. In a warning notice appended to the meal-planner, it warns that the recipes “are not reviewed by a human being” and that the company does not guarantee “that any recipe will be a complete or balanced meal, or suitable for consumption”.

ceo jake ‘hangman’ seresin. | headcanons.
→ c/w: sex, alcohol, smoking and daddy kink.
CEO Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin would spoil you rotten. They say you can’t buy love or happiness with money, but Jake disproves that ridiculous statement frequently.
You don’t need Jake’s money to prove that he loves you, but you have to admit, it is exhilarating when he takes you on his private jet to Paris for the weekend and dines with you onlooking the sparkling Eiffel tower along the river Seine.
You might as well make use of the money Jake spent on you this weekend and show him your reciprocated love, wrapped up in the crisp cotton sheets of his double bed flying home on his private jet.
Your wardrobe is bursting at the hinges with expensive items of clothing. One of a kind pieces Jake got made specially for you and black silk dresses from YSL for galas you routinely attend to.
There are jewelry pieces that only Jake’s love could buy. Jewelry that Jake insists to put on you each morning, ghosting his fingertips over the back of your neck and placing a featherlight kiss there and then to your wrist when he fastens your watch.
However, your perfume selection is limited. There are three dizzying scents and only three that Jake associates you with. When you wear any one of these three, Jake will groan into the crook of your neck and nip at your flesh with his picture perfect teeth.
“There’s my baby. You smell like heaven, my love.”
Jake very much indulges in his own happiness with his own money. His wardrobe that sits next to yours is full of clean cut, expensive suits that are taylor made to fit around his broad shoulders perfectly. There is never a seam out of place.
There are rows of shirts, all varying in style and for all occasions. When Jake buys a new shirt, he likes to imagine what you’d look like wearing it in the morning when you fix him a coffee from your Italian Moka pot.
Jake prides himself most on his cufflinks and watches, and he has a fine selection. After Jake has fastened your jewelry to you, you return the favor. But when you place the final piece, Jake’s class ring that he always wears, you bring his fingers up to your soft lips and place a tender kiss there.
Similar to yourself, Jake’s aftershave selection is whittled down to two. One for the day and one for the night. You’ll find yourself inhaling either one of these familiar scents along his neck when you sit in his lap, lightly tracing your tongue over Jake’s jaw and tasting the expensive fragrance for yourself.
“Oh, Jake. You taste so good, Daddy.”
His shirts always smell like either one of these two particular aftershaves and when Jake isn’t here, you wrap yourself up in his shirts for as long as your day will allow it. You run your hands over the soft material and dip them in between your thighs, daydreaming of Jake being there with you.
Jake got his nickname within the business tycoons as ‘Hangman’, because if you didn’t play by his rules, he would leave you hanging out to dry for the dogs. Jake was very self aware of the presence and almost deadly influence he had.
On some occasions you’d caught Jake at the end of a cutthroat meeting as he brought the lambs to the slaughter. There wasn’t a strand of his hair out of place and his tie was still knotted as perfectly as it was when you tied it this morning.
Jake wore his ever charming yet smug grin on his face, baring his teeth to the world as the vicious business man that he was. There was a freshly lit cigar hanging off his lips and he was talking numbers to his subordinate when he spotted you waiting by the glass door.
He called you over and you offered your praises due to the success of the deal that was just made. The smoke of his cigar clouded your senses and you gave Jake what you thought was, innocent praise.
“They don’t know what hit them, Hangman.”
Jake was quick to dismiss his subordinate and shut down the blinds looking into his office in a flurry. You called him ‘Jake’ everyday, but when you called out his egotistical personality of ‘Hangman’, he’d have you bent over the thick oak of his desk and his fingers stuffed in your mouth to keep you quiet as he pounded into you from behind.
There wasn’t a surface in Jake’s office that you hadn’t fucked on. Your favorite was when you visited him at night with your chosen take out in hand. You’d eat it together in the softly lit room and listen to each other as you disclosed the events of your days.
Jake would pop open a cork of wine that was presumably older than both of you combined. He’d turn off the lights completely and you’d stand with your back pressed tightly against his chest.
His large arms would be wrapped securely around you and you’d both be admiring the dazzling lights of the New York skyline, whilst taking sips of your wine.
You’d never finish the glass. It would always end with your back splayed out on the surface of Jake’s desk and your thighs doubled over. Your neck would hang off the edge and as Jake made you see stars for the third time that night in the dark of his office, you would gaze out upside down at his glass windows and watch the sparkling stars of New York appear in the sky.

The first time Sirius saw you, he couldn’t believe his eyes. You were a beauty. Your long, wavy brown hair was always accompanied by some sort of breeze and he wanted nothing more than to bury his face into your locks and breath in your fragrance. He bets you smell like the sweetest, most alluring blossom. You’re short and pretty, the perfect height and figure for him to wrap his arms around and squeeze, just so he could stare into your gorgeous doe-like eyes, press a kiss onto your button nose and eventually your perfect, full lips.
And the fact that you had been working next door to him for, who knows how long, without his realisation has his mind scrambled. Have you seen him already? He hopes to god you don’t know—
“Oh she knows,” Remus chuckles from beside him, which makes the dark-haired tattoo artist groan. He can’t even protest the statement, “you’re not really the shy type when it comes to your pursuits,”
Sirius looks over his shoulder as he leans back against his parked motorcycle. Past the glass of your flower shop, he sees you float around the space, in between stretching stems, dangling foliage and delicately proffering petals. It was like you were dancing a beautiful waltz; a ballerina on a stage.
Ever the encouraging brother-figure, James claps Sirius on the shoulder with an bright smile, “No worries Padfoot, she’ll come around to you eventually, just lay on the charm like you usually do,”
“I don’t want to,” the biker protests weakly, a small blossom of appreciation awaking in his chest from James’ encouragement.
“How come?”
Sirius didn’t know how to respond – his own silence and lack of a straight answer making him wince. He was never the best at deciphering his own emotions, a flaw that has pushed many romantic interests away. A permanent deterrent in his life. But, ever the observant and intuitive friend, Remus answers for him, “you don’t want to treat her like all those other girls, huh?” a look of soft pride settles into the brunette's features, before a gentle chuckle passes his lips, “finally growing up, I see?”
“Sod off, Moony,” he snaps half-heartedly as his two best friends laugh at him – all in good fun, never with ill-intent and he eventually joins them.
You weren’t oblivious to the stares, no. How could you be? Someone that handsome with that many girls lined up just to be around him was someone you couldn’t ignore. What struck you as completely odd, however, was why he had suddenly taken such an interest in you and why in the world did he frequent your street so often?
In your peripheral, you watch as another dolled up girl approaches him with fluttering lashes and a sickly-sweet smile. All while he leans his frame against a lamppost situated outside your quaint little flower shop, smoking a cigarette.
That awful habit seemed to be his only vice. On a normal day, you’re not a big fan of smokers, however, he frustratingly makes the flaw rather attractive when associated with his character. A character of rather long, dark locks; steel grey eyes; unblemished pale skin and angular features, he looks like a character straight out of a fairy tale. You can easily see him becoming one of your favourite characters if he ever was in one. It makes you sigh – a cross between dreamy and despondent – and turn away from the scene unfolding outside your shop window.
The jealousy stirring in your stomach was unfounded; it wasn’t appropriate for you to feel as though you had some claim over him when you didn’t even know him personally. However, you childishly wanted to argue that having seen him out there, smoking his cigarette in his all-black, leather attire, almost every since you’ve opened up the shop grounded your otherwise unreasonable possessiveness with some sensibility. Breathing another sigh, you tend to your tulips before turning towards the decorative flora you had yet to organise and display.
Although…
A thought occurs to you.
He no longer seems to be the pursuer as of late…
You wonder what’s changed.
Out of all places, you never thought to see him in a bookshop! Your – he isn’t yours! You remind yourself – mysterious philanderer in leather was going between the Philosophy and Classical Literature sections of the bookshop and you felt your heart squeeze painfully in your chest. A leather-clad romeo who favoured philosophy and classical literature genres? Was he the poetic and romantic sort too? You wanted desperately to freely cultivate more affection for him but feared the consequences of doing so. It was frightening how much you adored him despite being complete strangers to each other.
It takes you a while to realise that in your inner turmoil, you’ve unintentionally begun to stare at him. And, upon perceiving the action, immediately tried to look away if it weren’t for the troubled expression you glimpse of his perfect face. Irritation visibly furrows his brow as the weight of burden draws his lips down into a frown. Looking down, in his hands are two books and it dawns on you his dilemma. It’s a war you often find yourself in whenever you’re in the bookshop too and a blossom of sympathy blooms in your chest for his situation. With silent footsteps, you approach his towering figure, pressed on by a surge of confidence. The familiarity and relatability of his predicament encourages you to reach out a helping hand but, as you draw near and his broad shoulders grow larger, appearing more daunting than ever, your steps falter. Maybe you shouldn’t?...
Biting your lip, you argue with yourself for a moment and inevitably let your self-doubt win. Your reaching hand lowers and your shoulders slump, with a suppressed sigh, you turn and move to step away from his figure.
Your – he’s not yours! – unnamed, mysterious, handsome leather-clad casanova will have to remain a stranger…
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas or Letters from a Stoic by Seneca?
It was a hard choice but one that Sirius needed to make urgently for Remus’ upcoming birthday. The Count of Monte Cristo was a novel Remus loved. He already had a well-loved (worn) paperback copy that he had read through multiple times, so getting him a special edition hardcover of the novel would be a wise purchase. However, that was a rather safe option. Turning to examine the other book in hand, Sirius contemplates his friend’s more recent interest in Philosophy, especially stoicism. But was Seneca a good choice or should he go for Meditations by Marcus Aurelius? Was that option too customary?
Perhaps if he had the book with him…
Turning around, Sirius is slow to lift his eyes and ends up walking straight into you just as you were turning away. His eyes snap up and his arms reach forward when he hears your yelp and feels the collision of your body against his. In a matter of seconds, he’s pulled you safely into his chest, dropping the books in his hands to secure your safety.
“Whoa!” he chuckles nervously under his breath, “Sorry about that, dollface,” he doesn’t hurry to move away, not wanting to shock you further with any more sudden movements and definitely not because he was immediately inebriated by your alluring fragrance nor the softness of your smaller body against his.
“I-It’s okay,” you let out a soft, nervous laugh in return and twist in his arms to look up at him. In that moment, the world stops spinning and Sirius finds his breath stolen away by the sight of your sweet, doe eyes, cute button nose and kissable full lips.
You’re the flower shop girl…
“Oh!” you blink at him in surprise and he swallows his awe of adoration, “You know my flower shop?”
Fuck! I said that out loud didn’t I?
Giggling, you nod, still in his arms but not seeming to mind in the least bit, “yes, you did,”
“Sorry about that, doll,” he hastily removes his arms from around you and hurriedly goes to pick up the two books he dropped in the collision. From afar you were an untouchable daydream constantly enticing him through glass windows but up close, you’re a dream come true, pretty and sweet and perfectly suited to be in his arms. This new unshakable feeling is the first time he’s ever felt around a girl. He’s had plenty of lovers in the past but no one has had such a disarming effect on him like you and you were a complete stranger.
His voice is hypnotic and sweet, smooth and deliciously melodic to your ears. And the way he called you ‘dollface’! You’re weak in the knees and this close to drooling over the man. Desperately needing a distraction, you fix your eyes onto the covers of the books he picks up from the floor. The book titles catch your eye and immediately has you starting up conversations, which, thankfully, Sirius was more than eager to participate in, grateful for the change in topic.
Come to find out, he, unfortunately, wasn’t the secret literary romantic you had imagined him to be but the research he conducted behind the scenes for his friend, Remus, touched your heart. In fact, that made him more attractive than the potential that he was a classics-lover.
“Hey uh,” Sirius starts, catching your attention as you turn to face him, “I really appreciate you helping me out with this, Lilly,” he motions to his bookshop purchase and bites his lip from the radiant smile you face him with. God you’re so pretty…
“It was no problem, it was finally nice meeting you, Sirius,” your sweet voice makes his name sound so much lovelier than it really is.
“I’d love to return the favour…” he whispers, his voice is deep and dulcet, and you finally witness his casanova tendencies firsthand. There’s a tempting glint in his eyes as they look down on you while his hand gently brings your knuckles to his lips, “will you let me give you a ride home, dollface?”
“Yes please…” you sigh breathlessly, so starry-eyed that you couldn’t even feel embarrassed. Not that Sirius let on ever noticing your sudden dreamlike propensity. With a smile and a gentle hand on your lower back, he leads you outside to stand before a familiar looking motorbike.
“This is my bike,” he says proudly, grinning as he turns to you and begins to shrug off his leather jacket. For a moment, you mull over where you’ve seen that bike before. It didn’t take you too long, however, as a gasp of shock and realisation leaves your parted lips when you glimpse Sirius’ heavily tattooed arms. And your mind finally pieces everything together.
“Y-You’re the…”
“I work in the tattoo shop next to you,” he chuckles, taking your moment of shock to drape his leather jacket around you, “there, so you can stay warm,” he whispers fondly, eyes warm and soft as they take you in. Unable to help himself, Sirius leans down to press a kiss into the crown of your head, and moans softly at the fragrance of your hair wafting up his nose and into his brain. You make his head so foggy, you’re like a dangerous pill. But a pill he’ll gladly take over and over again until nearly poisoned and made an addict.
“All this time…” you utter softly, feeling a heat rise up your neck and to your cheeks.
He laughs in good humour, “I know,” he rummages around for a spare helmet. Turning back to you, he finds you swamped under his jacket and innocently looking up at him with the sweetest look.
God he could kiss you right now…
“Oh um…I-I wouldn’t complain but you should, at least, take me out to dinner first…” you joke despite the sudden onslaught of fluttering butterflies in your stomach.
Fuck…he said it out loud again!
“Yes, yes you did,”

My Queen
From Back to you book. Bridget x OC
The afternoon was peaceful at Merlin Academy. The students had finished their classes for the day and were dispersing across the gardens and hallways, trying to make the most of the last hours of sunlight. In the inner garden, where fountains murmured softly and flowers filled the air with their sweet fragrance, Bridget and Skye had found their usual spot on a stone bench, away from the hustle and bustle.
Skye was sitting cross-legged, leaning slightly on Bridget’s arm, leafing through a book without much interest. Bridget, on the other hand, was gazing at the open sky that stretched beyond the arches of the garden. The sun illuminated Skye’s white hair, making it shine like a mantle of snow in the light, and Bridget couldn’t help but smile at the sight. To her, Skye was simply… everything.
“What’s got you smiling like that?” Skye suddenly asked, glancing up from the book. Her voice was soft, with a hint of amusement, but her blue eyes sparkled with curiosity.
Bridget tilted her head to look at her, resting an elbow on the back of the bench.
“Do you really want to know?” she replied, her tone playful but laden with meaning.
Skye raised an eyebrow, closing the book and turning slightly more towards her.
“I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t” she retorted with a small smile.
Bridget let out a theatrical sigh, but her eyes never left Skye’s.
“I was thinking about you” she finally said, her voice more serious than she had intended. “About how amazing you are. And how, someday, you’re going to be a wonderful queen”
Skye blinked, clearly surprised by the statement. For a moment, she seemed at a loss for words, which made Bridget smile even more.
“A queen?” Skye repeated, her tone filled with disbelief, though a faint smile began to form on her lips. “Where did that come from?”
Bridget shrugged, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
“It’s true” she said with quiet conviction. “You’re smart, brave, and far stronger than you think. You have a heart anyone would envy, even if you sometimes hide it behind that cold façade you like to use. And besides...”, Bridget paused, leaning a little closer to Skye. “You’re beautiful. A perfect queen”
Skye chuckled softly, but there was a slight blush on her cheeks. She looked away for a moment, as if Bridget’s words were too intense to face directly.
“If I keep listening to you, I might actually start believing it” Skye murmured, though her tone was softer, almost shy.
Bridget leaned towards her, her eyes filled with warmth.
“You should believe it, because it’s true” she said, taking Skye’s hand and intertwining their fingers. “And it doesn’t matter what the world thinks or says. To me, you’ll always be my queen”
Skye slowly turned her head towards her, her eyes shining with a mix of tenderness and amusement.
“Your queen?” she repeated, raising an eyebrow with a playful smile. “Technically, I’m the future White Queen. And you’re the future Queen of Hearts. If we go by that, neither of us can be the other’s queen”
Bridget let out a soft laugh, shaking her head.
“What’s logic got to do with it?” she asked with a defiant smile. “You’ll be my queen, even if you technically rule another kingdom”
Skye burst into laughter, leaning closer to Bridget, so much so that their faces were mere inches apart.
“And what about you?” she murmured, her lips curving into a provocative smile. “You’ll be a queen too, won’t you? What will happen when the world calls you the Queen of Hearts?”
Bridget pretended to think for a moment, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
“I’ll be a modern Queen of Hearts” she finally answered. “I’ll be more than happy to give up the throne if it means I get to spend my life admiring you wearing a crown”
Skye let out a soft, teasing laugh, though there was something in her gaze that betrayed how deeply Bridget’s words affected her.
“Admiring me with the crown, uh?” she asked, raising an eyebrow. “You know, cupcake, sometimes I think you only say these things to provoke me”
Bridget smiled, leaning even closer.
“And what if I do?” she murmured, her tone low and filled with the playful intimacy that existed only between them. “You’re adorable when you try to act indifferent”
Skye stared at her, the blush on her cheeks deepening, but instead of responding, she took the initiative. In a smooth motion, she placed a hand on the back of Bridget’s neck and pulled her closer, pressing her lips to hers in a slow, deep kiss, filled with all the emotions words couldn’t express.
When they parted, both were slightly flushed, but neither looked away.
“By the way” Skye whispered, with a smile that held a mix of amusement and tenderness. “if I ever need someone to remind me of my worth… I always want it to be you”
Bridget smiled softly, squeezing Skye’s hand between hers.
“And I will, every day if I have to” she replied with a firmness that made Skye feel a comforting warmth in her chest. “Because you’ll be my queen, Skye. Always”
And with those words, the sun began to set, painting the sky in golden hues as they stayed together, certain that their love was greater than any kingdom or crown.

Quiet time
Author's note: my second Blue lock fanfic, featuring Rin Itoshi!
Content: established relationship | implied older! reader x younger! Rin | fluff | pet names | gender neutral reader
You wake up to thunderous rain, meager light seeping into your room. The rain was a perfect addition to your already soporous state; the urge to sleep was more tempting with the haven of blankets and plushies on your bed. A sudden chime from the doorbell dissipates your fatigue, any signs of sleep quickly leaving your body.
“A moment,”
You suppress a yawn, quickly opening the door for the incoming guest.
“Rin.. wha-what happened?”
Dull teal eyes underneath soaked raven locks, alarm bells instantly ring off by your mind.
“Come on in, I’ll get you a towel.”
You coax, your hand barely ghosting over Rin’s.
“I’m fine, [Reader]. It’s just a little rain.”
He croaks, his fingers enveloping your hand. Cold.. You dare not to wince.
“Get in the shower first. I’ll get you something to change-“
Just as you enter your room to grab some clothes, you feel a firm grip by your wrist.
“I have my change of clothes, [Reader].”
“What?”
“I have my change of clothes.”
Rin says firmly, tugging on your wrist. Moving closer to him, you place a hand around his frame, drawing circles on his back. You knew better not to ask; Rin had a penchant not to talk about his sentiments or feelings often - on the contrary, he had an unique way of portraying them.
“Let me know if you need anything, okay?”
“[Reader]…”
“Yes, Rin?”
“Can I stay with you for tonight?”
You give pause, barely registering what was said to you until you glimpse teal eyes imploring you. Knowing him, he isn’t very vocal about spending time with you as you’d spoil him when you’re with him. Perhaps, today was different.
“Yes, Rin.”
A small smile graces Rin’s lips, something you rarely see from your partner. You muster a smile back, before patting him on the shoulder.
“Before we go into a cuddling session, let’s shower, hmm? Don’t want you to catch a cold.”
Rin quietly complies, giving your hand a squeeze before departing to the bathroom. You brace for a teasing remark from him, but it didn’t come; he went to the bathroom without a word. Perhaps I’ll cook him some food to comfort him. You slip into the kitchen, preparing a meal suitable for an athlete.
A short while later, Rin emerges from the bathroom, inhaling the fragrance of your shampoo - a mixture of floral notes with citrus. It felt like a welcoming and loving essence that reminded him of you, warm and welcoming. He spots your petite figure by the kitchen, plating up what would be a delectable meal for one. Disregarding his heart melting from the sight of your cooking, he wraps his arms around your waist from behind, nuzzling against the crook of your neck.
As if expecting him, you greet him with a smile.
“Did that make you feel better, Rin?”
He merely nods, hugging your figure tightly.
“Feeling hungry yet? I’ve made something for you.”
“No, [Reader].”
“No?”
You suppress the urge to pout, but almost failing when he replies,
“The couch..”
There was something about the way he said or his body language that almost resembled that of a sulking kid. You decide against commenting about it.
“Okay, big boy.”
With ease, the athlete carries you to the couch, where Rin’s figure wraps around yours completely. You play with his locks under his gaze, occasionally making eye contact with him as if looking for a statement.
“…”
His arms lock on around your waist, his nose nuzzling against your shoulder.
“Bad day?”
He nods slightly, watching your fingers brush away a stray lock. You don’t prod further, mustering a small smile.
Fatigue seeps into Rin’s body as time passes, but he stays awake, as if wanting to say something to you. He had a long day of practice; doing a scrimmage with a team and losing afterwards. His ego shattered, Rin started exerting himself to the point of exhaustion - yet, he didn’t make progress. Frustrated, he walked out in the rain to your apartment where he found solace with your presence.
Albeit older than him, you gave him space, even spoiled him occasionally and spoke up for him. “Big boy” and “baby” were your pet names for him; he didn’t particularly like it at first but, for now, he didn’t mind it - it would give him butterflies whenever you refer to him as such.
He was not one to speak out his thoughts, but you’d be there to listen whenever he wanted to say anything. Rin, years younger than you, felt he needed to prove himself to be worthy of your love, the sense of competition to usurp your previous lovers intense like his drive to beat his older brother in soccer.
He wouldn’t dare to show a pathetic side of him to you, hoping you’d find him cool. According to you, he was already cool. That thought alone made him happy, although a bit unsatisfied.
Before he could let sleep overcome him, he spares a glance to you.
“I’m here for you, my sleepy prince.”
That new name sparks a smile on his lips before he drifts off to sleep.

Hi, can I say I adore your writing. Literally perfection. This may be an odd request but do you think write an Ango x fem black cat reader? Or just with her personality type. THANK YOU, I LOVE YOU.
TYSM LOVE YOU TOO ANON and yes deffo. we love a girlboss and tbh I do see Ango falling for someone like that. Hope you enjoy it♡♡
// to clarify the reader's ability is shadow travelling. basically she can morph/ conceal herself in shadows.

𝑮𝒆𝒏𝒓𝒆: fluff♡
The smell of rain was everywhere: down the dark streets dappled with light from street lamps, in deserted parks and inside Ango's office, seeping through the slightly open window. He took a deep breath, inhaling the fresh scent before taking off his glasses.
His half lidded eyes drifted to the clock on his desk: 3:40 a.m. 'Soon it would be over' he thought as he resumed working on the last report of the night. The glowing screen in front of him seemed hazy; a jumble of tiny letters and symbols. His head hurt.
Just then, the door cracked open. Ango waited for a few minutes but no one came in, and I mean who would still be awake at that hour, before resolving that it must've been the wind.
"Still working Ango?" a voice sounded from behind him.
For a moment the man froze, his nimble fingers ceasing their motion along the keyboard but then a smile rose to his lips upon recognising who the voice belonged to.
"Still roaming and sneaking into my office at night, Y/N?" he asked with a hint of amusement in his voice.
"You know I can't help it"
Ango needn't look at you to know that you were wearing that leather coat of yours, the one you wore regardless of the season or time of the day. For a while after you joined the Special Division he assumed that the coat was some sort of extent of your shadow travelling ability, but then realized that it was simply a fashion statement.
"Well that's a nasty habit of yours." he added, typing away on the clanky keyboard "You could've given me a heart attack"
The sound of your footsteps signalled that you were coming closer to him, his body automatically stiffening. Your forearms came to rest gently on his shoulders, slender fingers loosely interlocked in front of him; your nails were long and sharp, painted a black, translucent colour and adorned with intricate patterns of lines.
"But you should've known I'd come. I always do. If you ever get a heart attack it's gonna be solely your fault." you replied in an amused tone. Your hot breath fanned over the shell of his ear, sending goosebumps on his skin.
His muscles became even more rigid due to the closeness between the two of you. No matter how many times you came he still never got used to your presence; and indeed, you always seemed to make an appearence when he needed you the most, during the last hours of a 48 hour shift when his mind was so clouded and his brain felt paralyzed. You were like a shot of expresso, getting him back on his feet.
You leaned further over his shoulder, eyes scanning the glowing screen. The man could smell your intoxicating scent; a mixture of floral and citrusy fragrances with a hint of... vanilla? It was like a punch to the stomach, his face growing hotter and turning a light shade of pink as his digits stumbled across the keyboard. He made so many mistakes he had to erase each longer word twice.
"You work too much Ango. You should go home and rest" you eventually said in a gentle voice. "I can finish this report. It's for my mission right?"
He nodded once "Yea but it's the last one. I'll go home after"
You clicked your tongue, suddenly spinning his chair so he's now facing you. Your figure leaned slightly over his - as per usual you were dressed in black- your languid gaze taking in his features.
"When's the last time you got more than four hours of sleep at night?"
After thinking for a while he said that he doesn't remember, earning a loud sigh from you.
"What am I going to do with you?"
With a swift movement you slid your legs between his, inching closer as you brought your lithe fingers to his temples and started gently massaging them. Ango tried to protest but you quickly dismissed him with a tsk.
"Close your eyes and relax Ango"
And he did and felt the pressure built up inside his skull gradually dissipate. Your fingers worked magic, and soon enough his dull headache was gone. Relieved from pain the man sighed, his lips curling in a smile.
"Thank you... I feel much better now" he said, gratitude pooling in his eyes.
"You're welcome." you replied as you looked down at him. Your hair fell graciously around your face; your swooped bangs like butterfly wings shifting slowly with each movement of your body.
You stood like this for a few moments: gazes locked, mere inches away from eachother and he felt urge to touch you. Still, he knew he shouldn't. He never knew how you'd react to such affections and he was scared you'd back away, completely depriving him of you, so he simply stood there, accepting whatever you were willing to give him tonight. Maybe you would offer to massage his shoulders again like you did two weeks ago, or go to the convenience store and buy him a sandwich, or even promise to drive him home when he was done.
But today you did something else, something unexpected. You brushed away the stray strands of hair on his forehead and leaned in, pressing a chaste kiss on his forehead. Ango's body stiffened and he inhaled sharply, causing a light giggle to roll off your lips as you pulled away.
Just then your colleague's arm snaked around waist, pulling you closer. The look in his eyes was of pure exhaustion but you could see a passing shadow of longing. Ango felt each steady heartbeat in every cell of his body as he stood there, looking up at you; big eyes, long lashes that fluttered each time you blinked.
"Don't toy with me now Y/N. I'm in no mood for your little games" he said, defeated, but you only smiled, sliding the tips of your manicured nails along his scalp.
"How could you accuse me of such a thing Ango?" you purred and he gulped, feeling a rush going through his body. Your voice always had that effect on him, as if you were strumming the cords of his being.
He knew you were probably aware of the effect you had on him but he was too tired to care. With a pleading look on his face he straightened his back and brought his hands on your hips, lightly holding onto you like you were a porcelain doll. His eyes moved from your lips to your mouth and oh, you knew what he wanted.
With a sly smile on your face you tilted your head to the side. Leaning in, your lips were so close to his he could almost touch them.
"Say, Ango. Do you wanna kiss me?" you teased and he nodded, slightly parting his lips to allow you to slide your thumb over them.
And then you actually kissed him; it was a fleeting, sweet moment but it was real and he relished every second of it. When you pulled away his cheeks were tinted a dark shade of pink.
You chuckled, stroking his hair lightly. "Come on. Go and finish your work now so you can go home and rest."
Your words snapped him out of his trance and he spun his chair back to face his laptop. "You're right" he stammered "I should..."
"Alright then. I'll see you tomorrow" you said as you walked past his chair and exited his office. Ango typed away for some time before finally shutting down the computer and going home, the memory of your shared kiss still replaying in his mind.
That night sleep was deep and when he woke up the mext morning he felt well rested. He took the usual route to work by foot, passing by small coffee shops, pubs, closed clubs and stores, stopping at a flower shop. Bees swarmed around the colourful blossoms, hopping from roses to lillies, from golden daffodils to tulips.
Ango bought a small bouquet camellias before going to work and walking up to your desk, which was still empty. Placing the flowers on the wooden table next to a half empty cup of black tea, he quickly scribbled a note [Dinner at 8 in my office? ~ Ango] and placed it under the bouquet, then turned on his heels and made his way to his own office.

Discover the Timeless Elegance and Power of Perfume: The Art of Fragrance
For centuries, perfume has been a symbol of elegance, luxury, and self-expression. From ancient rituals to modern fashion statements, fragrance has played a pivotal role in enhancing confidence, creating memories, and shaping identities. Perfume is more than just a blend of aromatic ingredients—it is a reflection of personality, mood, and culture. Whether it’s a sophisticated evening scent or a light daytime fragrance, the right perfume has the power to elevate your presence and leave a lasting impression.
What is Perfume?
At its essence, perfume is an artful blend of fragrant essential oils, aromatic compounds, and fixatives. These elements are carefully crafted to create scents that develop over time, offering an evolving experience from the moment it touches your skin.
Perfumes are categorized based on their structure, which typically includes:
Top Notes: The initial burst of fragrance, designed to make a strong first impression. These notes are usually fresh and light, such as citrus or herbal scents.
Heart Notes: The core of the perfume, which emerges as the top notes fade. Heart notes are often floral or spicy, forming the true character of the scent.
Base Notes: The lasting foundation of the perfume. Base notes, like musk, amber, or sandalwood, provide depth and longevity to the fragrance.
The Types of Perfume
Perfumes come in various forms, each designed for specific needs and occasions. Here are the main types:
Parfum (Pure Perfume)
Contains 20-30% fragrance oils, making it the most concentrated and long-lasting option.
A small application lasts up to 12 hours, making it ideal for special occasions or evening wear.
Eau de Parfum (EDP)
With 15-20% fragrance oil concentration, EDP offers a rich scent that lasts 6-8 hours.
Versatile enough for both daily use and evening events.
Eau de Toilette (EDT)
Lighter than EDP, with 5-15% fragrance oils.
Perfect for casual or daytime wear, lasting 3-5 hours.
Eau de Cologne (EDC)
Contains 2-5% fragrance oils, offering a fresh and light scent.
Ideal for quick refreshes during the day, especially in warmer climates.
Body Mist or Splash
The lightest option, with only 1-3% fragrance oils.
Provides a subtle, refreshing aroma that requires frequent reapplication.
The Benefits of Wearing Perfume
Perfume is more than just a luxury; it offers tangible benefits that enhance daily life:
Boosts ConfidenceA well-chosen perfume can make you feel more attractive, self-assured, and ready to take on the world.
Creates a Signature IdentityYour fragrance becomes a part of your personal brand, making you memorable to those you meet.
Improves MoodCertain scents can uplift your spirits, calm your mind, or energize you, depending on your choice.
Evokes MemoriesPerfumes are deeply connected to memory. A particular scent can remind you of cherished moments, places, or loved ones.
Complements Your StylePerfume is the invisible accessory that completes your outfit and enhances your overall presence.
How to Choose the Perfect Perfume
Finding the right perfume requires careful consideration of your preferences, lifestyle, and the occasions you’ll wear it for:
Understand Fragrance Families
Floral: Soft and romantic scents with notes of rose, jasmine, or lily.
Oriental: Warm and exotic fragrances with spices, amber, and vanilla.
Woody: Earthy and grounding scents like sandalwood, cedar, or patchouli.
Fresh: Light and invigorating aromas with citrus, green, or aquatic notes.
Test Before BuyingPerfume reacts differently to each person’s skin chemistry. Always test it on your wrist and let it settle for a few hours before deciding.
Match the Occasion
Opt for lighter, refreshing scents during the day or in the workplace.
Choose richer, more sensual fragrances for evening events or formal gatherings.
Consider Seasonal Scents
In warmer months, fresh and floral scents are ideal.
In cooler weather, woody or spicy fragrances feel more comforting and bold.
Perfume in Everyday Life
Perfume is not just for special occasions; it’s a part of daily life that can enhance every moment:
Morning Routine: Start your day with a light, refreshing scent that energizes you and sets a positive tone.
Workplace: Subtle perfumes ensure you smell pleasant without overwhelming your colleagues.
Evening Wear: Sophisticated perfumes boost confidence during dinners, dates, or social gatherings.Specialized perfumes, like those infused with essential oils, can even provide wellness benefits, such as stress relief or improved focus.
The Future of Perfume
As sustainability becomes more important, the perfume industry is evolving to include eco-friendly practices. Many brands now offer:
Natural Ingredients: Using organic essential oils and biodegradable fixatives.
Cruelty-Free Options: Avoiding animal testing in favor of ethical practices.
Customization: Bespoke perfumes tailored to individual preferences, allowing wearers to craft their own unique scent.
These advancements ensure that perfume remains timeless while adapting to modern values and innovations.
Conclusion
Perfume is more than just a fragrance—it’s a reflection of who you are. It has the power to boost confidence, uplift moods, and create lasting impressions. Whether you prefer the sophistication of a parfum, the versatility of an eau de parfum, or the freshness of a body mist, there’s a perfume for every personality, season, and occasion.
Perfume is deeply personal, an invisible accessory that completes your look and defines your presence. With the rise of sustainable and customizable options, the future of perfume promises to be as exciting as it is luxurious.
Explore the world of perfume to discover scents that resonate with your identity and make every moment memorable. Whether you wear it for yourself or to captivate those around you, perfume is a timeless art that never goes out of style.

Patchouli in perfumery, feat. Snake Oil (Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab)
In the course of writing up Coco Mademoiselle (which I'll post after this), I realized that I need to stop and discuss patchouli first, because: wtf is going on there, seriously. Sylvaine Delacourte explains,
Patchouli has a woody, earthy, humid, dark smell and evokes a colour between brown and black.
(I find this to be true; I always picture a very dark, dark brown when I smell it, even if nothing else in the fragrance makes me think of a color.)
A camphor note molecule is identified in it, it also has almost a dusty scent. Patchouli can be reminiscent of a cork or an overripe apple, some find it smells like mushrooms, cellars and mould. Many perfumers have told me that they can detect a hint of cocoa in good quality patchouli.
On the other hand, as the Perfume Society describes it, in "So you think you hate… patchouli?":
Amazingly, from those fragile-looking leaves comes a sweet, spicy, smoky, cedar-y scent so powerful it has to be handled with care: patchouli is the most powerful of any plant-derived essence.
May the odds be ever in my favor.
But, the Perfume Society continues,
perfumers wouldn’t be without patchouli, for the richness that it gives to fragrances – and not just those heady Ambrées: patchouli makes its way into many chypre and powdery fragrances, swirling exotically alongside lavender, sandalwood, labdanum and bergamot, clove, clary sage, as well as vetiver. (It’s a little like vetiver, if you close your eyes.) Used alongside rose, it extends and ‘fixes’ rose’s sweetness.
Back to Sylvaine Delacourte: "Patchouli is the most important raw material in perfumery," a statement that really surprised me, but this is the former Artistic Director of Guerlain talking here. She concurs that it "combines beautifully" with woody notes like cedar, sandalwood, and vetiver, adding,
It brings depth and sensuality and is considered by some to be an aphrodisiac, especially when combined with sweet oriental [often called "ambrée" now] notes such as incense, vanilla and cistus. Patchouli can be refreshed by citrus fruits such as bergamot. It is often associated with rose, sometimes with jasmine, a little less with ylang-ylang. Patchouli is also a perfect match for gourmand notes.
Sure enough, Thierry Mugler's Angel (1992) famously combines patchouli and cotton candy (and several fruits) (and caramel) (and chocolate). That's a fragrance I also have on deck to write about; it was a game-changer, no exaggeration, at the time. I had also thought that Angel was considered the first "fruitchouli" (nsfw photo), as such, but apparently that may be... Coco Mademoiselle.
Delacourte also mentions that patchouli is "sensual and charismatic, often replacing mosses in chypre constructions and is essential in oriental compositions." And here comes Coco Mademoiselle again: it's considered a "neo chypre." If you go back to the Mitsouko post I did, you'll see that a classic chypre involves bergamot, oakmoss, and labdanum. As Basenotes user purplebird7 neatly explains, "This creates a sweet/sour/earthy/wet/dry combination of notes that makes chypres so complex. [...] New chypres use vetiver instead for the sour/dry component. They also use patchouli for the earthiness, and substitute other citruses for bergamot, the way Coco Mademoiselle uses orange, and [Chanel's] Chance uses citron."
Now, I haven't told you how the word "patchouli" comes from Tamil (patchai ellai, green leaf), or how Tutankhamun had gallons of patchouli oil in his tomb, and how it was worth its weight in gold, literally, to European traders. Or, for that matter, how it came to France via the paisley shawls, layered with insect-repelling patchouli leaves, that were so loved by Empress Eugénie. I didn't mention that patchouli is still very much associated with the "dirty hippies" of the 1960s, who (it's said; I wasn't there) used it to mask either weed or body odor. And I didn't mention any of this because I wanted to focus on how patchouli is used today—and because the hippie thing is extremely cliché. But maybe that's exactly what I should touch on, because:
I don't like patchouli. I do, in fact, Think I Hate Patchouli. Or I did, rather, before I started working on this post. And it's because of the "dirty" smell. Something that's like a combination of fermented basement lichen and the stoner guy I knew in college who took 40 minute showers but never washed his clothes? But since patchouli's in the base of just about everything these days—I decided that I'm going to have to get past that. Rather than use a moralistic term like "dirty," I've started calling the persistent aura that smells like "mushrooms, cellars and mold" The Funk.
And I've noticed that aged patchouli is a lot smoother; The Funk gets less rambunctious with time, and this may be why aged bottles of Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab's Snake Oil are so prized. For years, I wasn't even sure what was in it; the original description only mentioned "Indonesian oils sugared with vanilla." But once you find out that 80% of the world's patchouli comes from Indonesia—yeah, you can tell it's the primary note of Snake Oil. BPAL actually sells it pre-aged now, and with a more detailed description:
Snake Oil has shed its skin, and is back — now with vintage patchouli and dark, rich, aged vanilla absolute. Snake Oil is our signature scent, our first perfume: deep, rich, earthy notes swirled with vegetal musks, sugared vanilla bean, and dark spices.
A few nights ago, I pulled out a vial I'd gotten several years back. I remember that Snake Oil was really heady when it was fresh: a vortex of incense, spicy vanilla, and The Funk. This time, it was pure patchouli, albeit a mellow and dignified one; on a second try, I realized I needed to swish the molasses-thick oil back and forth until it was at least somewhat blended again. I then got a unified patchouli-vanilla and what I swear was a very strong ylang-ylang and sandalwood (both of which are cultivated in Indonesia, among other places). It's a good combination; the light, golden sandalwood-ylang note was the only thing I liked about Chanel's No. 5 Eau Première. I know it sounds weird (or immature, even) to say "I like Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab more than Chanel," but Snake Oil picked something to do and did it well, and that something was not giving me a headache or smelling like a diaper.
(But notice that I say I like it more rather than it is better. Skin chemistry is a wild—but incredibly important—card here. Ultimately, there might be a critical consensus on something, but you can only experience what your nose can sense, and what duet the skin of the wearer, yours or someone else's nearby, can produce.)
Come to think of it, Chanel's Jacques Polge may have removed the patchouli from the original No. 5; I didn't see it in the notes for the 1986 formulation still used today. I wonder now if that patchouli served as a bridge between elements that's no longer there, and that's why the extra pared-down No. 5 Eau Première seemed disjointed to me. On the other hand, there are people who think the new No. 5 Eau Première is a masterwork unto itself, and there are people who hate the dizzying baby powder/Play-Doh turn Snake Oil can take. So it goes. I actually think I might prefer fresh Snake Oil, heady as it is, but the aged notes may be more mellow and perhaps more wearable over all (also tenacious as fuck). I may try a new vial of the pre-aged Snake Oil soon and see how the difference splits.
So, aged patchouli: Good! Manageable! Let's try another! I had left a rollerball of Pacifica's Himalayan Patchouli Berry in a drawer for a couple of years; when I first used it (I was trying to broaden my palate!), The Funk was too much. (Side note: This is a weird perfume, in that Pacifica will tell you upfront that it's grapefruit and patchouli, and you can tell it's grapefruit if you mentally squint at it, but it really does smell like some kind of berry. What kind of berry? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) Here in 2023, the fragrance has mellowed out, and it's a lot easier to wear. Also, it proves Sylvaine Delacourte's point about citrus working well with patchouli, whether it's cosplaying as someberry or not.
I also had a fresh Nemat patchouli on hand. This was interesting because it had a little too much Funk for me, but it was also the first time I'd been able to smell a vetiver-like note in a patchouli. And by this time, I'd worn both Coco Mademoiselle and Snake Oil twice; my nose was tolerating patchouli better overall. After a year or so, this could smooth out into something really nice.
So: you can render patchouli more crowd-pleasing with the slow ingredient of time. What if you just used science? The Perfumer's Apprentice sells a natural patchouli oil that's undergone fractional distillation, which "produces a more elegant smell with less earthy tones, similar to the flower itself." On the other hand, Firmenich straight-up uses white biotechnology (today I learned!) to synthesize its Clearwood aromachemical:
Beaming with light, it offers the creamy warmth of amber and a dark woody character reminiscent of patchouli. [...] At higher dosages it can be used as a new building block. Rich in patchoulol, CLEARWOOD® can elegantly complement a patchouli essential oil.
I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing some kind of defunked patchouli, be it fractionally distilled or wholly synthetic, is what's in Coco Mademoiselle, which has a very elegant patchouli base. I mean, it also busts out harsh and peppery at first, but there is no actual Funk, oddly enough. But we'll get to that in the next post, now that you have the background.

Ransom's Redemption (A Chris Evans Fanfic), Chapter 19: The Offer (Ransom POV)
Evince: to reveal the presence of (a quality or feeling); to reveal.
"What's an Evince?" I asked.
"It's a new fragrance that is gaining traction," Paul explained. "and they want you for the ads!"
"Paul--"
"Good money," Paul presses. "Good money!"
"But--"
"Calida is your opposite."
I stood in shock, much like I am now watching Mimi look over the contract on a computer screen.
She exhales, pushing her glasses up. "It's impressive."
I didn't like that kind of reply from Mimi. It means she is trying to not say something, like she is hiding something. "It's alot of money, Mimi, alot."
"But it's in New York."
"Yeah, my parole officer is working on that," I shrug. "It seems that all I have to do is wear a damn tracer, but for the money?" I watch her. "What's wrong?"
"And Calida Ortiz is on this?" she asks, not looking at me, but at the offer on the computer screen.
I sigh. Calida and I were pretty hot and heavy at one time. I was into her. She was beautiful, smart, worked against animal cruelty. And damned if she wasn't a freak! Ah, she loved love, being passionate and in the moment, the perfect muse for any artist, really. Every time we got in each other's space, sparks flew, which is why Paul suggested her.
"She's an old friend of Paul's--"
"And yours." It was a statement.
I force a small laugh. "That was a long time ago."
"Not really."
"Come on, you don't think--"
"I didn't say anything."
I blink. Her whole mood was changing. "You don't think she'd be interested in me, do you?" I laugh. "Come on, I'm an ex-con--"
"Oh, so that means I was a second or third choice?"
Her glistening eyes give me a sense of dread. "We've always been close, Mimi. Things changed over time." I kiss her hand and look into her eyes.
She gives me a small smile, but I can see a tinge of sadness in them. "If they can make it happen, you should go."
"Really?"
"Yes, yes--"
I smother her with kisses. "We can go--"
"I can stay home."
I freeze. "What?"
"You won't be gone long, right?" she asks with a shrug. "besides, I should stay here and look after things."
My heart winces. She isn't sure of me. Why? And why let me go?
"You've been a good boy," She says as if she heard my thoughts. "Time for a pass."
I laugh humorlessly. "I'm not in the military."
"You've been in prison," she points out. "and you don't want to go back, I get that."
"Where is this coming from?" I grab her arms to turn her and maker her face me, and I swallow hard. She is hurting me. No I don’t want to go back, that’s true, but marrying her was a different decision. I’d always loved her; it just deepened. “don’t do this, Mimi.”
“Do what?”
“What you’re doing,” I shake my head at her. “What you’re thinking!”
“What?” she whispers.
“I love you.” I feel her rigid stance begin to relax. “Baby?” I stand there, searching her eyes, waiting for an answer.
She closes the distance between us, her cheek against my chest as she squeezes me tight. “I’m sorry…hormones. I’m just all over the place today.”
"We've been married a month or two, and truthfully, I haven't taken you anywhere."
"We're busy," she gives a slight frown with a careless shrug. She looks up at me with a bright smile. "And I've enjoyed staying in with you. And, there isn't much I can do."
I remember that Mimi loves to ice skate at the Frog Pond, and the doctor said no to it. “Get dressed, sweetheart, we’re going out.”
I make a few calls and take her to the Lookout Rooftop Bar on top of the Envoy Hotel. I’d been wanting to try the place; it opened the same year I went to prison.
“You like?” I ask, though I can tell by her expression she loved it.
“I like,” she smiles widely. “This is magical! And the view—” She shakes her head. “Great idea, Ransom.”
“Think everybody would like to come here?” I ask her. “For a party?”
“I think it’d be fun.”
I watch her from across the table, and take her hand. “It’s nice to just be out.”
She smiles in such a way that makes me lean over the table and kiss her.
“We can come here every month, if you’d like.”
“We should try different places, don’t you think?” she asks with a smile. “It’s like a monthly adventure. We can go to activities, too.” She chuckles. “Well, events.”
“Okay, it’s a date,” I nod with a grin, and she chuckles happily.
The weather is still sort of mild, so we opt for outside fun. We hop a cab to Columbus Park and walk to the Frog Pond where they are skating.
(208) Skaters At Frog Pond In Boston Common 2 - YouTube

I watch her watch the skaters. “Remember when we snuck here when we were in high school?”
“Yeah, I was grounded,” I chuckle. “You kept telling me that we were going to get in trouble.”
“We did get in trouble.”
“But, oh—”
“It was worth it!” we both laugh out loud.
“We skated, hit Mickey D’s, got cocoa from Dunkin,” I shake my head. “We had so much fun that night! We even went to the movies!”
“Had to do it,” Mimi shrugs. “You and Fiona had broken up again, and this time it was bad—”
I roll my eyes. “Uh, Grant Halsted bad.”
“God, Grant Halsted,” she shakes her head. “That guy could get under your skin.”
“Fiona and I were steady, so—well, as steady as we could be in high school.” I laugh at the memory. “That’s when I knew I’d never marry her.”
“Why?”
“She played too many games,” I shrug. “I realized that we could never be serious.” I smile at her. “I got grounded after getting into a fight with that guy, and you called.”
“After hearing about the fight, yeah,” She nods. “and I decided you needed a night out. So I took you out on a school night, and we were out past curfew. Bang, I’m grounded and you’re like…double grounded!” She laughed.
“I almost kissed you that night.”
Her mirth was replaced with surprise. “Really?”
“Yeah,” I shrug. “but I didn’t want it to be like that, not with you, Mimi, not with you.” I take her hand and lead her along, reminiscing about all the times we had as we leave the Commons. We catch a cab back to our car by the Envoy, and I stop her at the Seaport Christmas Tree.
“What?”
I pull out my trusty cell and find the song.
“Ransom,” she breathes, her eyes glistening in the lights.
I bow and offer my hand, and she steps into my arms. I close mine around her and we rock, oblivious to everyone.
“Mimi?”
“Hmm?”
“I was thinking—”
“Dangerous, past time, honey.” She is relaxed now.
I laugh nervously. “You know that picture we took on our wedding day by the grand staircase?”
“Mmm-hmm.”
“Why don’t we use that for our Christmas postcards?” I ask. “I mean, we—” I am cut off by the loudest squeal, and she puts her arms around my neck to hug me hard.
“That’s so—so—” she stops to kiss me, and I melt. She could do that to me. I could smell her tears. Pregnancy hormones? “Hey, you cryin’?”
“I’m just being silly,” she laughs, pulling away to wipe a few stray tears. “Mmmh!” she hugs me again, making her laugh. “I love you.”
Her whispered admission makes my heart flutter. “And I love you, baby.” We sigh together and keep rocking. And then I realize: I don’t know what to get her for Christmas, and it’s two weeks away.
