THE VOURDALAK - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Oscilloscope Laboratories
SYNOPSIS: In a remote countryside, the Marquis d'Urfé, a noble emissary of the King of France, is ambushed and forsaken. Seeking shelter, he stumbles upon an isolated manor with an eerie atmosphere. The family, hesitant to offer hospitality, displays peculiar behavior as they anxiously await the imminent return of their patriarch, Gorcha. However, what initially appears as mere oddity swiftly escalates into a full-blown nightmare when Gorcha returns, bearing a haunting transformation that raises questions about his true nature.
Based on “La Famille du Vourdalak" by Aleksei K. Tolstoy, THE VOURDALAK, predates Bram Stoker’s “Dracula" by over half a century.
REVIEW: In Mario Bava's 1963 film "Black Sabbath," starring screen legend Boris Karloff, the "I Wurdalak" segment draws inspiration from the same story that forms the premise of THE VOURDALAK. Surprisingly, the story originated in Russian and wasn't translated into French until approximately seven decades later. It's noteworthy to mention that the word "vourdalak," derived from Slavic and Balkan folklore, may have initially referred to werewolves before becoming associated with vampires.
Filmmaker Adrien Beau brings Tolstoy's story to life, incorporating many of its elements with some contemporary flair. While it diverges from the original prose, Beau compresses time and incorporates several of Tolstoy's themes, creating a rich tapestry of folklore, superstition, patriarchy, and elements of 1900 French polite society and Serbian culture. Reminiscent of Nathaniel Hawthorne's short stories, the tale follows a noble emissary who seeks help and is given an ominous warning as he is sent out into the forest and told not to stray off the road. Outside his comfort zone, the nobleman confronts his beliefs and becomes a victim of his own desire. Beau remains faithful to Tolstoy's tale until the climax, where he introduces contemporary vampire themes through the Marquis d'Urfé's challenge. The dialogue and interactions authentically feel period.
In this film, the production values may be simplistic, but the costumes, particularly the Marquis d'Urfé's hair and makeup, effectively establish the period of the story. The actors' movements and the structure of the dialogue further contribute to the period atmosphere. Despite being shot in color, the framing and editing techniques evoke the classic monster movies of the 1930s and 1940s.
Adrien Beau's puppet design stands out, reminiscent of Max Schreck with a touch of zombie. The combination of the performance and Beau's voicing of the character creates a chilling effect..
The cinematography is both beautiful and breathtaking, creating a distinct atmosphere, especially during the daylight sequence and even more effective at night.
Martin Le Nouvel and Maïa Xifaras' score blends period-sounding movements with an effective genre score, enhancing the atmosphere, emotions, and performances of the characters.
The captivating ensemble cast elevates this film to a must-watch. Kacey Mottet Klein portrays the Marquis, a character resembling a 19th-century Ash. He has some panache, but his bumbling nature and occasional off-putting actions result in him being a less likable character. Ultimately, he brings a sense of integrity to the role that makes it memorable. Ariane Labed's performance as Sdenka exudes charm and aloofness, as she adds an exotic allure to the character. It is understandable why the Marquis falls under her spell. Grégoire Colin and Claire Duburcq effectively portray a couple governed by societal expectations and rules of civility. Their interactions with the Gorcha highlight their acting brilliance. Despite realizing that they are making poor choices, they are unable to deviate due to the patriarch's influence and the necessity to respect his wishes. The exceptional performances of the cast alone make this film worthy of multiple viewings.
Adrien Beau’sTHE VOURDALAK, his feature film debut, has a raw cinematic feel that seems inspired by the essence of the classic black-&-white monster movies and the sensuality of the Warhol Dracula and Frankenstein films, without all the sex and gore of those films. The cinematic experience is a blend of a talented filmmaker and an excellent cast that make THE VOURDALAK a delightfully bizarre, gripping and shockingly refreshing film. THE VOURDALAK has all the fright stuff to render it an instant cult classic.

Challengers Review!
“You have a better shot with a handgun in your mouth.”
Challengers is a film that I have been hyped up for a good while now. Ever since it was delayed by the strikes, it had been on my radar, but lately its been especially stronger hype. Particularly in the last couple of weeks, I had been anxiously anticipating the arrival of this film, especially after I’d explored more of Guadagnino’s filmography and loved what I watched. Bones and All, in particular, used to hold both the #1 Guadagnino spot and my #1 alltime spot. That’s changed with Challengers.
I dearly loved this film. It surpassed my hype and expectations greatly, and even in ways I hadn't fully anticipated. So much so that it has not only taken a spot in my favourites, but as I mentioned, it has become my current favourite film, cemented more with every time I have rewatched it.
-Filmmaking/Technicals-
There is so much of the filmmaking that I absolutely need to fawn over. Particularly in the cinematography and editing departments, especially the former.
Firstly, this film’s score is not only superb, but extremely electric and engaging. All of it is very well composed and pushes the mood and feels of a scene, but its also extremely pleasing to the ears and one of the rare scores I will be listening to pretty damned often. The angelic sounds we hear in two instances - most significantly when Tashi returns to the hotel after seeing Patrick the night preceding the big match -
Musical Score: 10/10
Challengers’ cinematography is absolutely elite. Seriously though, there is so much to fawn over in this film. The shots under the court in particular made my jaw drop; it looks absolutely insane. The sequence where the tennis ball is the camera also had my cinematography-loving self pretty giddy, especially when we pan out to a bird’s eye view when the ball hits its arc. We also get first person shots during the Rochelle match that were done very well. The panning views between Art and Patrick and the umpire when they’re sitting in the main match are also quite visually interesting. I also love the slow zoom-in on Tashi at the very beginning, and the slow pan down during the tiebreak, showing her getting more and more excited by the energy, the feeling she’s getting from that particular part of the match.
Cinematography/Shot Composition Score: 10/10
In terms of editing, the pacing is flawless and scenes translate between one another very cleanly. But what I want to focus on for this aspect are the abundantly creative choices made. In particular, the way freeze frames and lower frame rate is used. There are a good few freeze frames in the film, used to draw particular attention to important moments. A particularly memorable freeze is at the very end, where we freeze on Tashi’s absolutely elated expression at the end of the match, as well as the freeze at the end of the makeout sequence in the wind. I also love all the shots that frame the triangle; often, Tashi is shown between the two, particularly in the main match. The zoom-in shots are also great and energetic
Editing Score: 10/10
One of the most fascinating things of the production design of Challengers has to be the way in which the under-the-court shots were performed. The usage of a glass floor and the way the camera is frames form such a perfect illusion of being underneath the court as they play; its truly an incredible pair of shots. It is simply greatly done in general, and is sold even more extensively by the cinematography blending all the locations and sets together quite seamlessly.
Production Design Score: 10/10
-Screenplay & Acting-
While everyone definitely smashed their roles here, undoubtedly Zendaya is the absolute standout in her best performance to date. Everyone shone brilliantly, but in my mind as I watched the film, she absolutely excelled in her role the most. Faist and O'Connor were also fantastic in their performances; all three really combine to make such an interesting and enjoyable dynamic, that gets even more so as the time jumps reveal more and more of what lead up to the present moment. And again, Zendaya was definitely the star and most standout here, but Faist and O’Connor should not be ignored for how well they played into this throuple.
Acting Score: 10/10
The screenplay is another facet of Challengers that I found myself enamoured with. The way it presents its themes by using the interesting relationship triangle between the main cast and through tennis, changing the whole meaning of tennis through its own themes and characters is both fascinating, profound, and absolutely entertaining in every way. The writing here really struck a perfect balance between having great characters, deep and interesting meanings to analyze, and also being able to entertain a crowd. Gorgeously artistic yet extremely enjoyable in both its drama and its action.
Screenplay Score: 10/10
Direction is pretty damn near flawless, as always from Guadagnino. The film is distinctly different from all his other works yet retains his style in all its facets; particularly the shots and performances have that Guadagnino feel to them that I indeed love.
Direction Score: 10/10
-Analysis-
Challengers gladly follows suit with Guadagnino’s filmography in having a lot of delectable layers to unpack. This film in particular really hammers in on tennis, and what goes into it. Beyond the sheer skill and fitness needed to play at the high levels the core trio does, there's passion and a certain level of mental energy required. Tennis is described as a conversation, and this is a key point of the film. Twice, Patrick uses a signal - replicating a tick Art has - to communicate that he and Tashi have had sex. The first time is when they’re younger, and the second time is during the ending, which is the ball that gets the rekindling going between the three of them.
I also loved the structure of this film, absolutely. We get the whole film framed by the climactic match, which we start the whole thing with, and also end on it. We have many time jumps to different moment in the past and present, but every single switch is meaningful. They are timed so as to give us all the information we need at each moment, and really paints its own intensity through this creative structure. We see segments of the distant and near past, between years and mere days, that give a deep fleshing-out to our characters, and make the ending of the match feel so much more visceral and rewarding as a viewer. By structuring it this way, Guadagnino really found a perfect way of demonstrating the conversation of tennis. A non-verbal one, told through the way they played, as well as the ticks the players have, and their attitudes through the match. Beyond the emotion on their faces - using Tashi’s anger as an example - we can absolutely feel her emotions in how she is playing, with a certain aggressive tone to it that goes beyond how naturally competitive she is. Tashi’s life is about tennis, moreso than the men whom she becomes entangled with. For Tashi, tennis is her love language, it's how she communicates and expresses herself. It's why she's offended by Patrick asking her to stop speaking of it during their early sex scene; by doing that he's essentially rejecting her. Rejecting her love and affection. It’s something that had been pretty obvious since they’d first met her; besides the small talk they had in the dorm, she speaks of the sport both out of love for its literal and metaphorical uses. The way she describes a game as being in love, only to be later asked to stop talking about that very love that she gets from the sport…it makes it clear that Patrick wasn’t really paying attention when she was talking at the beach. Art lost the match to get her number initially - a contest that further explores how Tashi’s life revolves around the inner meanings that are felt in tennis - but clearly understood and listened to her more at the end of the day. Even when she does get injured, her passion and love doesn’t change its angle; all is a function of tennis. It’s why she tells Art she’ll leave him if he loses to Patrick; with tennis being out of their lives like that, she doesn’t feel the same attraction.
It’s why she goes and fucks Patrick at midnight. He had already expressed his desire to keep going, longer than Art intended to, when she rejected his coaching proposal. Beyond just trying to rig the match - because she truly does have feelings for Art, and clearly doesn’t want to lose him, but knows that the loss of their shared love language would make things fall for her as they had done over a decade ago with Patrick.
The ending is definitely important to how the film’s ideas come full circle. From the scene in the dorm room to the ending, the three all share a pretty distinct bond with one another; Art and Patrick as friends, and both of them intertwined with Tashi. Art wins the match, embracing Patrick in the end; they make up. Tashi’s reaction is an impassioned scream, followed by a smile. Both from seeing Art win, and from seeing the two friends making up…and by proxy, them making up with her. They all made mistakes along the way, but things came full circle from their first shared kisses, and they end up mutually bonded again, after many years of turbulence. This is my interpretation of the ending, which the cast and director have themselves said is meant to be open-ended, which I do think was executed greatly here. Ending it on a freeze frame of Tashi smiling solidified this interpretation of the ending for me, as her reaction that ends the film really symbolizes two things to me:
1. The repairing of the bonding between the three. 2. The true passion, the heart, coming back into the “fucking good tennis”. 3. The rebuilding of Art and Patrick’s passion towards tennis.
Also symbolizing these are reactions from Tashi. The new excitement she shows as the tiebreak heats up, and she truly feels the emotion and relationship in their playing, as well as her squeezing her hands together to symbolize the reuniting. Another interesting point throughout the film is that Patrick is always on Tashi’s left, and Art is always on her right. In the dorm room and the match in particular, this order stays. Patrick being on the left could symbolize how he is a bit more of the ‘wild’ side, while Art is the more ‘comfortable’ side. This is until after the set break, wherein they swap sides; this being after Tashi is approached about coaching Patrick. This represents how she is seeing a rough path ahead with Art if he doesn’t win, whereas Patrick is more than ready to have her back in his life, as his coach. This changes again later when they once more swap sides, but this time the fact they changed sides isn’t another flipping; it represents a balance. They have been on both sides of the triangle, and thus the hug they share at the end and this final swap represent that rekindling between the three.
Two sides of her life that come together, in the end, in tandem - in unison - with her. Art’s relationship is more loving and sensual, Patrick is more sexual, and Tashi is the coach between the two. All of them makes mistakes along the way, but to err is human after all, and they do rekindle in the end through the metaphorical feelings that are brought out through tennis.
Tennis isn’t a sport; it’s a relationship.
These three all do things in the relationship between the three of them that are negative, sometimes manipulative. They are human in the end; imperfect, yet perfect for each other despite any rocky roads they’ve needed to cross together.
Enjoyment&Analysis Score: 10/10
-Conclusion-
Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers is a film that I have come to love ever so dearly. In the short time it’s been out, everything has sunk in deeply for me to the point I cannot help but think it over pretty often. I am truly happy it released at the time that it did, for I have had so much free time to really watch it over and over and appreciate it as fully as I can, both in an analytical and critical side, and an entertainment side. It is simply so much fun to watch, as well as have much deep meaning and intriguing analysis to it.
{The Score}
The Final Score calculation for Challengers is as follows:
10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10/8 =
10/10 || 5/5

Unlocking Financial Success in Independent Filmmaking: A Strategic Guide
Achieving financial prosperity in the film business necessitates a strategic, thorough approach, particularly for independent filmmakers working in areas such as New Jersey and New York. This path includes careful planning, innovative funding methods, and wise budget management. By adhering to these principles and drawing inspiration from seasoned filmmakers, one can successfully navigate the intricate terrain of film production and attain financial prosperity.
Legal and Financial Management
Contracts are essential in safeguarding the interests of all participants in the filmmaking process. Consulting with legal professionals, though potentially expensive (ranging from $5,000 to $25,000), is vital to protect both you and your project from legal issues. Alongside this, hiring a proficient bookkeeper or production accountant is critical. These experts track and manage expenses, supporting sound financial decision-making throughout the production.
Funding Strategies
Pre-sales offer an effective route to acquiring upfront cash to finance a film project, especially when working with well-known talent. Gap financing is another option, which involves borrowing against anticipated distributor sales. Though it carries more risk, it does not rely on a distributor's valuation of your film. Alternatively, slate financing funds multiple films simultaneously, helping balance potential losses with successes across various projects.
Crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo have gained popularity, letting filmmakers generate excitement and initial funds while establishing an audience. Additionally, grants from governmental bodies and non-profits, alongside tax credits in New Jersey and New York, can notably reduce production expenses.
Reaching out to private equity firms and bond companies also opens lucrative possibilities. These organizations can offer significant funding and completion bonds, minimizing investor risk by ensuring the film's completion.
Budget Management
Designing a comprehensive budget is crucial, encompassing costs from pre-production through distribution. This process involves aligning scripts with available resources to deliver a cost-effective yet high-quality production.
Precise financial forecasts are necessary, involving a detailed analysis of similar projects' performances, audience demographics, and potential revenue streams such as box office receipts and distribution agreements. This establishes a solid budgeting foundation, enabling effective resource planning and allocation for filmmakers.
Independent Filmmaking
Creativity in funding strategies is crucial for independent filmmakers. A combination of various funding sources—including crowdfunding, grants, and private equity—is often required to meet budget targets. In some cases, self-financing is used to maintain full creative control, though this should be a last resort due to the high financial risk involved.
Generating revenue for independent films frequently depends on securing distribution deals, either through traditional avenues or direct distribution platforms like Vimeo On Demand. Additional revenue streams could include TV and streaming licensing, merchandising, educational sales, and hosting paid screenings.
Regional Incentives
Shooting in New Jersey and New York provides attractive tax credits and incentives. Filmmakers should explore these opportunities, as they can significantly impact a film's financial outcome.
Local funding opportunities encompass state and local grants that offer vital financial support without the burden of repayment, making them an appealing choice for filmmakers aspiring to create significant projects in these regions.
Best Practices and Insights
Crafting a well-rounded strategy from scriptwriting to distribution is crucial for financial success. This involves securing pre-sales and exploring various revenue channels. Tailored marketing strategies are important, supporting both traditional and direct distribution approaches.
Collaboration between creative teams and financiers ensures a high-caliber output without exceeding financial constraints. Furthermore, considering financial incentives as supplementary benefits rather than foundational funding encourages reliance on secure and guaranteed revenue streams.
By implementing these strategies and leveraging regional incentives, independent filmmakers in New Jersey and New York can achieve not only creative but also financial success in the demanding yet gratifying world of filmmaking.

Lazenby’s Rise and Fall The One-Bond Story
In the world of James Bond, few names provoke as much curiosity as George Lazenby. Unlike Sean Connery or Roger Moore, who became synonymous with the 007 franchise over multiple films, Lazenby remains a one-film wonder—cast as the iconic British spy for just one movie: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969). His meteoric rise to Bond fame and subsequent departure have become a story of legend, forever cementing Lazenby’s place in pop culture as the Bond who walked away.
Lazenby’s entry into the role of James Bond was as unexpected as it was unconventional. A former model with no formal acting experience, the Australian-born Lazenby caught the eye of the Bond producers after impressing them with his charm, physicality, and sheer audacity. The filmmakers were searching for a replacement after Connery had stepped down from the role following You Only Live Twice. Despite Lazenby’s inexperience, his charisma and looks won him the part, propelling him to international stardom overnight.
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was released in December 1969 and, to this day, is considered by many to be one of the most faithful adaptations of Ian Fleming’s novels. Lazenby’s Bond was more human, emotional, and even vulnerable compared to Connery’s suave, stoic interpretation. Notably, the film featured Bond getting married—only to see his new wife, Tracy, tragically murdered by archvillain Blofeld in the final scene. Lazenby’s more sensitive portrayal added a depth to Bond’s character that had not been seen before, and many fans have since lauded his performance as fitting for the material.
Despite these positives, Lazenby’s tenure as Bond was brief, and the behind-the-scenes drama surrounding his exit was nothing short of a Hollywood saga. As a newcomer to the film industry, Lazenby struggled with the pressures and politics of the Bond machine. His inexperience, combined with his independent, rebellious nature, led to clashes with both the producers and the film’s director, Peter R. Hunt. He was vocal about his dissatisfaction with the way the production was handled and had difficulties adjusting to the strict rules that came with being James Bond.
For more information, visit the official website www.pennyplant.com
However, what sealed Lazenby’s fate as a one-and-done Bond was his own decision to walk away. Influenced by countercultural movements of the 1960s and the changing attitudes towards stardom, Lazenby came to believe that the role of James Bond was a relic of a bygone era. In a now-famous move, Lazenby refused to sign a multi-film contract, rejecting what could have been a long and lucrative career as 007. His decision stunned the Bond producers and left fans wondering why an actor on the cusp of superstardom would abandon the role that made him a household name.
Lazenby’s gamble, however, did not pay off. His departure from the Bond franchise left him without a significant acting career to fall back on. In the years that followed, Lazenby appeared in a few low-budget films and TV shows, but he never managed to recapture the same level of fame or success. The role of Bond was quickly recast, with Sean Connery returning for Diamonds Are Forever (1971), followed by Roger Moore’s long tenure starting with Live and Let Die (1973).
While Lazenby’s exit from Bond may have seemed like a misstep, his decision was rooted in a sense of personal integrity and a desire to forge his own path. He later admitted that he didn’t realize the significance of what he was walking away from at the time but never expressed deep regret about his choice. In interviews over the years, Lazenby has often reflected on his brief time as Bond with humor and humility, acknowledging that while it was a whirlwind experience, it was not meant to define his entire career.
In recent years, there has been a growing appreciation for On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and Lazenby’s portrayal of Bond. What was once considered a lesser entry in the franchise has been reassessed as one of the best films in the series. Lazenby’s portrayal is now celebrated for its emotional depth and grounded approach to the character, with many fans lamenting that he didn’t continue in the role.
Lazenby’s unique Bond legacy is not just a cautionary tale of an actor who gave up on one of the most coveted roles in cinema but also a testament to his independent spirit. While he didn’t go on to have the illustrious film career that some of his successors enjoyed, Lazenby remains an intriguing figure in Bond lore, known for making one of the boldest decisions in Hollywood history.
Today, George Lazenby’s story serves as a fascinating footnote in the annals of Bond history. His self-engineered exit from the role has given him a permanent place in the 007 pantheon, not as the Bond who failed but as the one who dared to walk away. In doing so, Lazenby crafted a legacy that is perhaps more complex and enduring than if he had simply stayed and continued as Bond. Even with only one film under his belt, George Lazenby remains, for many, a Bond to remember.

Choosing the Right Drone for Your Needs
Selecting the best drone involves considering your specific requirements and preferences. Here’s a guide to help you choose the right drone:
1. Define Your Purpose
Determine the primary purpose of your drone. Are you looking for a camera drone for photography, videography, or both? Understanding your goals will guide your choice of camera quality, flight features, and overall performance.
2. Set a Budget
Establish a budget that aligns with your needs and expectations. Camera drones come in a wide range of price points, from budget-friendly mini drones to high-end professional models. Determine how much you’re willing to invest and find a drone that offers the best value within your budget.
3. Consider Your Experience Level
Choose a drone that matches your experience level. Beginners should look for drones with user-friendly controls, automated flight modes, and stability features. More advanced users may prefer drones with advanced camera capabilities and customizable settings.
4. Evaluate Flight Features
Consider the flight features that are important to you. Look for drones with GPS stabilization, obstacle avoidance, and auto-return home features for enhanced safety and stability. Flight time is also a crucial factor, as longer battery life allows for more extended sessions and greater flexibility.
5. Check for Accessories and Support
Evaluate the availability of accessories and support options for the drone you choose. Additional accessories such as spare batteries, carrying cases, and propeller guards can enhance your experience and protect your equipment. Ensure that the manufacturer offers reliable customer support and resources for troubleshooting.
Tips for Beginners
Start with a Mini Drone: Mini drones are less intimidating and more affordable, making them an ideal starting point for beginners. They provide a chance to practice flying and capturing images without the complexity of larger, more advanced models.
Learn the Basics: Familiarize yourself with basic drone operations, including takeoff, landing, and maneuvering. Practice in open areas to build confidence and improve your flying skills.
Understand Local Regulations: Be aware of local regulations and restrictions regarding drone flight. This includes no-fly zones, altitude limits, and registration requirements. Ensuring compliance with these regulations will help you fly safely and legally.
Invest in Accessories: Consider investing in accessories such as spare batteries, carrying cases, and propeller guards. These items can enhance your flying experience, protect your drone, and ensure you’re prepared for various scenarios.
Practice Regularly: Regular practice will help you become more proficient with your drone and improve your photography and videography skills. Experiment with different shooting angles, settings, and flight maneuvers to enhance your creativity and technique.
Camera Drones
Camera drones have revolutionized the way we capture and experience the world, offering unique perspectives and creative possibilities. For beginners, starting with a mini drone can provide valuable experience and a solid foundation for more advanced models. As you explore the best drones for photography and videography, consider your specific needs, budget, and experience level to find the perfect drone for your purposes.
