and I love you, it’s ruining my life - chapter 2
Shiv always forgot how much she loved Karolina’s apartment until she walked through the door and breathed it all in again.
The white-tiled kitchen, the polished wood floor, the tall ceilings. The slide-up window behind the armchair that lets them duck out onto the fire escape that’s decorated with flower boxes and two simple deck chairs. The warmth, the grey cashmere blankets that sit over the back of the sofas, the high bookshelves that frame either side of her TV and are dotted with books in English, Polish and Czech. Her DVD collection. The wicker baskets that sit filled with evenly cut logs beside the black fireplace. Pictures and memories that sit in neatly adorning frames or within the safe confines of leather and metal bound album books. The takeout boxes from the night before that they - that she - should’ve cleaned away that morning. The chatter wafting up from the street below when the windows are open - it’s only a second floor apartment, just high enough to make out the voices but not their words. The sunrise that leaks in through the main living room window in the morning, the gentle waft of the silk-thin curtains through the breeze. The view when you sit up at the loft and eye down the piano by the desk. The brick-sided wall. Scents of pine and vanilla. Shiv smiles.
This is the house that is lived in and loved and undeniably Karolina, corporate and otherwise. This is the only house that she’s ever been in that she might call home.

“Straighten your back, dear. Don’t slouch.”
“Yes, Aunt Lydia.”
You tighten your grip on the handle of your red leather suitcase as you walk up the concrete path that leads to Commander Joseph Lawrence’s front door. Nerves in your legs tingle back to life. The drive from the Red Center was long, and Aunt Lydia had counselled you to mind your patience when you’d grown restless. But now, as you make your way to the crescent-shaped steps, you can’t help but hope for even one minute more in the van.
The overcast sky looms grey and ominous overhead.
“Remember, the Commander is a very powerful man.” Aunt Lydia’s cane clacks on the concrete alongside your footsteps. “He is very well respected, Ofjoseph. This is quite the opportunity for you.”
“Yes, Aunt Lydia.”
The old Victorian becomes grander and more imposing with every step you take towards it. Your gaze lifts higher and higher: first floor, second storey, then dormers and a tower that let light into what must be the attic. Stonework and Roman arches over the windows and doors signal the age of the house—it has to be at least one hundred years old.
“He has suffered great losses recently, as you well know.”
“Yes, Aunt Lydia.” She had recited the story over and over—and made sure you could tell it back to her, too. Your and Aunt Lydia’s footsteps fall into stride along the concrete path, fast approaching the stairs up to the house.
“His dear Wife, Mrs Eleanor Lawrence—may God protect and keep her—and then his Handmaid, too.” The Aunt tuts. “Oh, that wretched girl. I’d had such hopes, Ofjoseph—but you won’t disappoint me so, will you, dear?”
“No, Aunt Lydia.” The knot in your gut tightens.
“No, good girl.” Aunt Lydia modestly raises her brown skirts to ascend the concrete steps with grace. “Posture,” she says pointedly, brow arched, looking back at you with an appraising, approving glance before she knocks on the large black front door.
Just before you bow your head to look to the concrete beneath your feet, your eye is caught by something to the right, attached to the burnt-orange bricks that make up the gloriously antiquated home.
It’s a black wooden plaque, with three golden numerals in the centre framed by a golden ovoid ring.
132
You glance down quickly. You should not even be making an attempt to read, whether it be letters or numbers or anything. If Aunt Lydia saw recognition register on your face, she’d march you straight back to the van to return you to the Red Center for the swift removal of one of your fingers.
Leniency, for your first offence.
“The Commander has been very gracious in accepting you, Ofjoseph. You have a privileged place here.”
“Yes, Aunt Lydia. Praise be.”
“Mm,” Aunt Lydia hums in righteous agreement. “Praise be.”
…But still, it strikes you as unusual, as you stare at the grey concrete, that such a plaque should even exist, now. Such decorative tiles are relics from the time before Gilead—forbidden, now, and what’s more, utterly useless. How could such an inscribed plate remain intact when there are no more street signs to direct your way let alone numbered houses?
The front door swings open, shocking you out of your thoughts.
“Blessed day. Come in, Aunt Lydia.”
A female voice. Younger? Deferential.
A Martha: one of the two you’d been told to expect here.
“Blessed day, Sienna, thank you,” Aunt Lydia replies pleasantly. “Come along, Ofjoseph,” she says promptly, without a look back at you as she steps inside.
The interior of the Commander’s house greets you like, once, a warm hug might have done. Off the foyer is two sitting rooms, and they seem dark, but not sinister inside. The walls are papered with cranberry-red brocade and muted-toned, aging florals, or else—painted with rich, deep hues of colour. Dark-stained wood pocket doors with etched glass inserts lead to one sitting room and an archway with a stained-glass transom at the top leads to another. The heavy, patterned curtains inside make the sitting rooms feel cosy and private—even, dare you think, warm. Full and ornate bookshelves, rugs of paisley and Persian patterns, and an abundance of leather seating furnish the cluttered rooms.
“This way, please,” offers the Martha named Sienna, gesturing through the open pocket doors.
You follow Aunt Lydia, your eyes struggling to adequately absorb every detail of the room. Lamps on side tables, artworks from many different Schools arranged effortlessly on the walls, chests, sculptures, a chandelier, a fireplace.
Cushions and blankets strewn over the leather couches. Stacks of books lazing on armchairs.
An old, freestanding record player in one corner.
Knowledge, art, and music all reside here.
The house is lived in. Still. Even now.
“Can I getcha a tea, some coffee, Aunt Lydia?” comes a man’s voice from the far end of the room.
Before you can think better of it, your gaze snaps to the sound of his voice—relaxed, even casual in tone. He stands just inside another arched opening, hands tucked into the pockets of his trousers. A generous head of ghost-white hair tops his head. He has thick grey brows and a white beard peppered with silver and grey. Thin-framed glasses rest on the bridge of his nose. He wears a waistcoat, and a buttoned vest with a scarf tied like a cravat, in an ascot knot.
It’s the first you’ve seen a man of Gilead not dressed in a black suit and black tie.
“Commander Lawrence,” Aunt Lydia smiles, with only a slight waver in her voice. “Blessed day, Sir.” Your raised wings catch in her periphery and she glances at you with beady eyes.
You drop your head immediately, quickly and quietly pretending like you’d been studying the many colours in the Persian rug beneath your brown boots.
The Commander’s gaze flicks to you—not that you see it—before he looks back at the Aunt. “Hi, yeah,” he says, “blessed, good morning.” He calls down the hallway, “Sienna?”
You shift on your feet, tightening your grip on your own gloved hands where they rest in front of you. The Commander’s casual, informal, incorrect greeting stirs a sense of unease in your stomach. Was he merely distracted or… wilfully disrespectful? Could you even think such a thing, about a man like him?
Beside you, Aunt Lydia bristles, drawing in a sharp, quiet gasp. But she settles herself quickly.
“Sienna!?” calls the Commander again, louder this time before turning back to his guests.
Well, his one guest, who brought with her the newest member of his household.
“’d you say coffee, Aunt Lydia? I think Beth made scones.”
“Ah…” the Aunt hesitates, gathering herself in a way you’ve rarely seen her need to do. “Oh my. Tea would be a delight, Commander,” she recovers. “No need to waste your delicacies on me!”
“Hm,” Commander Lawrence huffs a mirthless laugh in response to Aunt Lydia’s self-deprecating smile, and the resulting silence is broken by a set of hurried footsteps that quickly enter the room.
“You called for me, Commander?”
The young Martha, her rich brown eyes wide, a sheen of sweat making her warm-brown skin glow, her voice slightly breathless.
“Auhm, yeah,” says Commander Lawrence, swivelling to address her. “Tea, please, Sienna—and bring three cups, would ya? Some of Beth’s scones, too.”
“Yes, Sir.”
Three cups?
“Thanks.”
“Three?”
Aunt Lydia’s incredulous voice cuts through the room like a warm knife in soft butter. It’s so abrupt, so much shriller than you are used to that your gaze flicks upwards.
The Aunt’s round, wrinkled face is dropped in an expression of pure shock. The room is silent, even Sienna’s retreating footsteps have ceased, as the three of you look between each other—stunned in the face of this blatant and brazen flouting of Gilead-sanctioned decorum.
It seems, as tested as Aunt Lydia has been since arriving at the Commander’s house, that this act of hospitality extended to you, a Handmaid, is the extent of what she can handle.
For the first time since meeting him, you spot a hint of a smile flicker across Commander Lawrence’s face, as elusive as the passing of a shadow, or a ghost. “Three, Lydia,” he says quietly, with a self-assured confidence that dares her to question him further—especially since he refused to use her title.
The air is thick with tension. You hold your breath.
Aunt Lydia’s lower lip quivers as she searches for words. Her brow creases, her small eyes flitting between his as she holds the Commander’s gaze.
You hear her suck in a breath before she speaks again.
“Th-hank you, Commander Lawrence.” Aunt Lydia swallows. “Praise be, you are most generous, Sir.”
Everything breathes again. Footsteps recede down the hall once more, the walls themselves sigh with relief. For a moment you almost think you hear birdsong outside—but that’s next to impossible, over all the radio chatter.
“Welcome,” the Commander replies, lazily omitting words in his speech once more. His tone is breezily self-assured once again, but his dark eyes have hardened into a cold stare. He turns his gaze on you. “Sit.”
You look to the floor so quickly there’s a twinge in your neck, and you drop into the nearest seat. “Yes, Sir. Thank you, Sir. Under His Eye, Sir.”
“Alright,” the Commander cringes at your nervous rambling. “No problem, just, yeah. Siddown.”
You clasp your gloved hands together in your lap, your eyes fixed on the tiny balls of lint that have gathered near the seams. Everything about this man, from his clothes, to his manner, to his home, is contrary to what you’d been told to expect.
“Please,” says the Commander to Aunt Lydia, gesturing and offering for her to take a seat also. He walks around one of the armchairs, picks up a stack of three books and unceremoniously drops them on top of the existing stack on a nearby side table so he can sit down, too.
Aunt Lydia, frazzled and just barely recovering from the disrespect afforded her by the Commander, uneasily sits down on one of the brown leather couches. She sits like she’s perching on it, not quite setting down all her weight, on an angle to take up only the smallest possible amount of space.
She clears her throat. “Commander,” she forces a smile, shifting to face him, “it is my great hope that Ofjoseph will bring some,” she pauses, anxiously looking around at the many artworks and stacks of books that decorate the room, “stability, to your household, Sir. By His Hand.”
“Thanks,” says Commander Lawrence. “’ppreciate it.”
“I…” Aunt Lydia stammers again, stumbling over the Commander’s audacious disregard for social custom. It’s unorthodox—or rather, much worse—it’s a deliberate, transparent, shameless violation of his role as a Commander in the Republic of Gilead.
Lost for words, Aunt Lydia merely nods her head in deference. Her fingers flex around the gilded handle of her cane.
The Commander hums to clear his throat as Sienna brings a laden tray into the room. One teapot, three teacups, a plate of scones, and one small ramekin of butter.
The Martha sets it all down on the coffee table and the porcelain rattles softly in the stifling silence.
“Thanks, Sienna,” says Commander Lawrence, leaning forward to pour himself a cup of tea as the younger Martha leaves the room. “Hey, uh,” he sits back in his armchair, cup and saucer in hand, “you.”
You feel his eyes on you. This is how he chooses to address you? To draw your attention to him? ‘You’?
The stillness in the room is expectant, now. You tell yourself to lift your head.
“Ofjoseph?” Aunt Lydia prompts you.
Commander Lawrence speaks over the top of her. “Look at me.”
You lift your gaze to meet his. There’s nothing hard or soft in his stare, nothing warm or cold in the way he regards you. He merely sees you—his eyes observing, his lips in a line that neither smiles nor frowns.
He’s a wall, but built to defend or protect, you can’t read right now.
“My last Handmaid was a bit of a rabble-rouser,” he says easily, his voice nonchalant, “so I'm gonna say to you the same thing I said to her, ‘kay?”
You swallow, absorbing his candour. Aunt Lydia had told you never to speak of the last Ofjoseph, even if it was asked of you. But this particular question posed by the Commander requires more than a passive response. You get the sense that a number of conversations with him will be like this, and so you steel yourself to speak with a clear voice. “Yes, Commander.”
He keeps his gaze locked with yours, and brings his steaming teacup to his lips. He takes a slow sip, eyes trained on yours, and you resist the urge to shrink and shrivel into yourself.
The Commander swallows and sets his cup onto the saucer. It clinks, and after letting the small sound land for beat he says lowly, “You’re not gonna be any trouble, are you?”
Your breath catches, your voice stalling in your throat. Staring at him heats your blood, makes your palms perspire in your gloves. The man is dignified; he holds himself almost regally wherever he sits or stands. Is it the power he holds that makes him handsome, or is innate attraction purling in the pit of your gut?
…What will the Ceremony be like with him?
“No, Sir,” you say, your voice so soft it cracks. You gulp and collect yourself. Timidity does not seem to be a quality Commander Lawrence respects—another lesson you’d ardently learned only to be proven useless in his house. With more confidence, but not too much, particularly for Aunt Lydia’s benefit, you say, “Praise be to you, Commander, and may He make me truly worthy.”
You can feel Aunt Lydia’s presence lift with pride. You can see the smile spread across her face without needing to look at her, and can hear her words in your head without her needing to speak them.
‘Very good, dear,’ comes the Aunt’s voice in your mind.
The Commander looks you over, stoic as ever. “Ya,” is all he says in reply.
“Ofjoseph is one of our most promising Handmaids, Commander, allow me to assure you,” Aunt Lydia chimes in, now, finally, feeling on equal footing again. “Since the horrendous tragedies that your household has withstood, we thought it right and just that you be unburdened in at least this regard, Sir.”
“Unburdened?” the Commander replies flatly, his stalwart gaze now fixed on the Aunt.
You’re not sure whether you can look away from him. Does he wish for your eyes to remain on him? Does he expect you to look at him and from him at your own discretion? Would he like you to use your own judgement?
Regardless, it is clear that the decision of the Red Center Aunts to provide a pious, docile new Handmaid as consolation for his wife’s death is—at the very best—unappreciated by the Commander.
But whether or not Commander Lawrence appreciates the gesture and the gift that the Aunts have made you into is, ultimately, not your concern. Your first and last and only priority is that you fall pregnant with Commander Lawrence’s child as soon as humanly possible—or it’s the Colonies for you.
However, you being his sixth Handmaid, the Commander needs you to fall pregnant with his child just as quickly—given, especially, the sudden exodus of most of Gilead’s children seemingly overnight.
“Forgive me, Commander,” Aunt Lydia frowns, her eyes softening apologetically. “I only meant—”
“’s fine,” he interrupts, setting his cup and saucer back on the tray. “Tea’s gone cold, anyway,” the Commander stands from his seat and straightens his waistcoat, clearing his throat. “You can find your way out, Aunt Lydia?”
“Certainly, Sir,” Aunt Lydia assures him, mirroring his movement and standing from the sofa, somewhat uneasily on her injured leg. On instinct, you rise to your feet too.
“Til next time,” the Commander says, his voice laced with sarcastic fondness, as he strolls from the room and into what must be his private study. He doesn’t spare you a single backwards glance as he pulls another set of pocket doors closed behind him.
Silence settles over the sitting room like night.
Just like that, the visit concludes, and the realisation washes over you.
You’re not leaving with Aunt Lydia, when she goes, which she’s sure to do in just a moment.
This is it. The transaction is complete.
Your place is here. This house is now your home.
“I’ll be back the day after the Ceremony, dear,” Aunt Lydia says, leaning on her cane to stand. “In about, oh!” she pauses, looks at you with bright eyes, “seven days! Oh, sacred number. Blessings, Ofjoseph. May God bring forth His miracle.”
You muster a smile for her. Despite how this woman screamed at you, berated you, withheld your food and your sleep and denigrated your sense of self until you believed you were worth nothing more than being impregnated and delivering a healthy baby, her absence from your daily routine will be an adjustment.
You say, “Under His Eye, Aunt Lydia.”
She cups your cheek. “Under His Eye, dear.”
The Aunt makes her way to the door, met by Sienna and the second Martha, Beth, who stand in the foyer to see her off. The front door closes behind Aunt Lydia, and as soon as the latch locks it’s as if a dark, heavy storm cloud lifts from the house.
The Marthas sigh and relax, chattering eagerly and bickering animatedly about tonight’s dinner and even complaining about the Commander’s fussiness as they strut down the hallway to the kitchen. From the other side of the house, you hear a flare of music go up: some kind of Big Band era song, with trumpets and tubas and horns playing vivace—lively and fast.
The sun peeks out from behind the shroud of overcast sky, lighting up the sitting rooms with the glow of mid-afternoon.
You take a breath.
This old house feels alive.

Here’s my contribution to @starrynightdeancas 2k follower celebration, part one! The prompt was beach, which sparked the idea of Dean and Cas retiring to a beach cottage together. I built it in the sims, and provided a list of headcanons to go along with it. Hope you enjoy!
Dean and Cas buy a broken down, overgrown old house on the coast of Maine
They immediately set about fixing it up
They leave some of the ivy on the house because Cas thinks it’s pretty (Dean agrees)
After restoring the plumbing and electricity, they finally spend a day assembling their bed in the bedroom, surrounded by the few suitcases that hold their entire lives
The master bedroom is bigger than they thought from the pictures on the internet
So they fill it with their bed, their books, their mementos, and all the things they never thought they’d have a home for
There’s a little fireplace in the bedroom. Cas and Dean sit on a sofa at the end of their bed and listen to the sounds of the fire.
They have a chess table, on Cas’ insistence. He teaches Dean how to play, and Dean proves to be quite good.
The space around the base of the stairs is converted into an office and library for Cas who gets a job at the nearby town’s community college where he teaches a class on folklore and history
(The students have an abundance of theories about who he and his partner? husband? actually are. They’ve come closer than they’d expect.)
The bookshelves easily fill themselves with books Sam finds and sends to them for safekeeping and what they took from the bunker
His desk is cluttered and always stacked with books and his laptop, as well as a few abandoned coffee mugs
A map hangs on the wall, pinned with places they want to visit and rugs are scattered across the floor
Cas also takes over the porch, lining the side of the house with a row of mismatched pots for plants, a bee hive, and a gardening table and storage
(Dean gets a woodworking table just off the front steps)
They convert a downstairs bedroom into a bar for Dean, which he decorates with mementos from their family all over America and a big sign converted into a light that bathes the room in warm light
There’s a Stanford flag Sam sent him from where he had gotten a job, the bar is covered in flags and stickers from other hunters that stopped by, and a pride flag Cas proudly presented him after they got home from their first pride parade. A pile of paintings Jack made at school in his art class sit on display in the corner, and behind them, the wall is covered in photos of all the hunters they could find.
The barstools are mismatched but lovingly curated, collected from yard sales and thrift stores
Dean loves spending time in there, stealing kisses from Cas and practicing making drinks in his free time off from his mechanic job
The kitchen has dingy white cabinets with blue countertops that clash perfectly with the yellow paint. Cas adores it. Dean insists on repainting everything, but Cas makes him keep the colour scheme. The stove and fridge are the same blue as the countertops, which Dean chooses while Cas is at work as a surprise. Cas adores them too.
Sam buys them a fancy coffee maker when he gets a promotion. They fight over how to work it (and end up kissing against the counter)
Jack paints them a five-piece painting to match the blues in the kitchen. They display it proudly and always show it off to their guests
They buy the comfiest sofas they can find, and Dean builds an end table to match. He finds an old trunk and turns it into a tv table. Jack helps them pick out a TV and video game system. He invites his friends over whenever he can and they all adore visiting.
They have a big brick fireplace that’s perfect to curl up in front of when their old injuries are acting up. They play board games on rainy days and roast s’mores with Jack.
The entryway has hooks for Cas’ trenchcoat and gardening hat, across from an old globe that Cas likes to spin around as he tells stories about the places he’s seen
They keep two old rocking chairs there, where Dean and Cas sit on the harder nights, holding hands and simply being
The downstairs bathroom, Dean and Cas agree, is the superior bathroom. With its big tub (large enough for two) and its cheerful yellow curtain, they are rather fond of spending time there together. They have a bath mat shaped like a flower.
The upstairs bathroom is a bit more cramped and less colorful, but works beautifully. They keep the bathrobes Eileen bought them up there. Cas’ is the same colour as his trenchcoat.
The upstairs hallway is a perfect reading nook, from its comfy armchairs to the pile of cushions Jack likes to do his homework curled up on. Dean finds the armchair Cas chose extraordinarily ugly, but he looked so happy at the sight of it that he doesn’t say anything.
Jack’s easel is next to the bookshelf in the hallway. He loves to paint at strange times of the day and night - strange, ethereal images inspired by his life
Jack’s bedroom is cheerful, full of haphazardly pinned posters of his interests and soft blankets for when he gets overwhelmed. He has a gigantic stuffed dragon he hugs and talks to, and when his friends playfully tease him, he only grins and says “sometimes you’ve got to be a kid, you know?”
He has a pink and black gaming chair and a fancy desk setup for gaming with his friends. His desk lamp has planets on it, and it sits opposite the microphone.
He keeps makeup and nail polish on his dresser. No one dares tease him.
They’re happy. They’re really, truly, happy.

Sweater Weather ch.3
Emerald Isle was covered in moss and rocks where they docked, the rocks and sand giving way to grassy hills and a dense forest of pine trees and shrubs where the side of a large house peeked out from behind them.
Owen took their bags after he had tied off the boat, Kenji leading Ben up some wooden stairs and on a brick path through the trees.
“Wow.” Ben said. “It smells amazing out here.”
“Smells amazing?” Kenji asked, glancing at Ben.
“Well, I…I haven’t been around real pine. It’s either been a candle or something already dying slowly for the sake of a holiday.” Ben said, shrugging at the end.
“Oh…I never thought of it like that…not a lot of traditional pine trees in Cali.” Kenji said. “You probably haven’t even seen snow.”
“No. And the funny thing is, my parents are, well, were, Seattle natives. I’ve lived in Texas and California my whole life. I’ve always wanted to come here. We planned to when my mom got better but…”
Ben’s smile fell and he looked at the trees in pain, closing his eyes for a moment. Kenji looked around to see Owen making his way up the path towards them. He grabbed Ben’s hand and led him along.
“Uh…M-My Dad likes the trees and we even have an orchard in the back. I think we have apples, peaches, almonds and a pomegranate tree in the green house.” Kenji said. “In summer, I bring back so much fruit from here.”
“That actually sounds great.” Ben said with a smile. “Smoothies galore.”
“Mom loves her trees and uses them for teas and jams, so…indulge her for me?” He asked. “She hasn’t really…nailed the flavor…”
Ben chuckled and hugged his arm as Owen got closer.
“Got it, Honey.” Ben said and Kenji nearly tripped.
“On your left, Lovebirds!” Owen called and walked past them with their bags.
“W-What?” Kenji asked once Owen was out of earshot. “Why did you…what was that?”
“A pet name?” Ben asked, raising a brow. “What would you call me?”
“Ben…ny?”
“No. Something else.” Ben said quickly.
“Babe?”
“That’ll do.” He said.
They continued to walk up the path, then stopped, Kenji noticing Ben staring at the house as they came up to it.
It looked like a Californian lake house; wooden with large glass windows and a balcony with a sturdy awning, a fire pit on the second floor awning, wooden steps leading down to another area where there was sand going into the dark blue water, a huge porch and yard and so many trees around it, as if hidden.
“Is that a lighthouse?!” Ben yelled when he looked up the hill.
“Yeah. Just in case.” Kenji said and Ben looked up at the regal looking stone structure.
“C…Can we go up it?”
“Yeah, sure. We can explore tomorrow though. Parents and sister.” He reminded Ben, who nodded, but let his eyes linger on the lighthouse a few seconds longer.
Kenji led Ben to the porch and knocked on the door despite Owen walking in a few seconds earlier.
A short, plump Mexican woman opened the door and cried out excitedly, scooping Kenji into her arms and despite being a full foot shorter than him, lifted him up and spun around.
“Mom!” He squawked and blushed. “Not in front of Ben!”
She dropped Kenji, who staggered before standing straight. He cleared his throat.
“Mom. This is Ben. Ben, this is my mother, Candela Kon.”
“Oh, baby, you can call me Candy!” She said and hugged Ben in her soft warm arms, Ben getting a whiff of cocoa butter and vanilla.
Candy, indeed.
She had the same golden skin and dark hair Kenji had. But hers was curly and in lose spirals that was tied back into a high ponytail with a white velvet scrunchy. She wore a thick red tunic over brown yoga pants and furred boot slippers. She had on tinted lip balm Ben often used on interviews and…
“It’s great to finally meet you!” Ben said, smiling brightly when she put him down.
“Oh? Has Kenji told you anything about me?”
“He may have mentioned gardening and teas.” Ben said. “Of which I am eager to see and taste.”
Candy giggled and elbowed Kenji. “You got yourself a keeper, Mijo.”
Kenji let out a huff but smiled regardless.
“Your Father is on a call right now, but I know someone in the sunroom who would be sooooo excited to see you!”
Kenji grinned and sped past her.
“Son?” She called.
“Yeah?”
“Your boyfriend?” She asked.
Kenji sped back and took Ben’s hand. “Right, sorry Babe.”
“It’s Carmen, I get it.” Ben said dismissively, noting how Candy beamed at Ben’s reaction.
“Aw, you’re still a doting brother!” Candy teased.
“I think it’s cute.” Ben said and Kenji smiled at him.
“Ready to meet the most important lady in my life excluding my mother?”
“Good save.” Ben teased and Kenji chuckled, leading him past a large sitting area with a plush red sofa set and armchairs around a curved tv and sound system mounted on the wall and a fireplace to the left, burning away fragrant wood.
They walked down a wide hallway, the walls decorated with family pictures and photos of the ocean and various sights around the island and Seattle itself.
“You guys really like Seattle.” Ben said.
“It might be a little farther, but Dad has an office building there and a condo where Mom and Carmen chill during summer weekends. We used to live in Cali, but after I left, I guess they relocated to Washington for good. Especially after the bullying…”
“It’s amazing. What parents will do for their children.” Ben said softly.
Kenji paused outside a door and closed his eyes before sighing. “Yeah. It is.”
He opened a white door with a large glass panel with a soft gauzy white curtain with reflective green sequins stitched in them in patterns that looked like ivy or vines on the inside. The walls of the room were a light minty green with metal work on the walls of sunflowers, daisies and chrysanthemums. Two walls had large windows that opened inwards to let in the cold air, another fireplace sheltered from the breeze and with a low back black cushioned wide bench with thick legs looked to be made from bleached driftwood before it. Most of the furniture looked to be made from sturdy carved driftwood, pale gray cushions and blankets on it, along with a basket piled high with furry or fleece throws and a few bookshelf cabinets with thick glass sheltering the treasures inside.
But before the fireplace on the wide bedlike bench, with green led light cat eared headphones over her head and staring at her switch as she played what Ben noticed was Stardew Valley, was Kenji’s treasure.
She was also plump and short like her mother, with her big brown lashed eyes and full lips. Her skin was very pale and her waist length black hair pin straight. Her hair was dyed green about five inches from her scalp and in two high pigtails. And her lips were chapped from how she was biting them.
She wore blue jean capris despite the cold weather, a black t-shirt and red and pink socks with a pink cartoon lion and a thick looking sword on them. She laid on her stomach and Ben saw her phone was on a podcast; episode 68 of King Falls Am, so she couldn’t hear Kenji go behind her.
Kenji poked the small of her back, causing her to scream and pull her switch to her chest, kicking out as she rolled over.
“If I die in the mines, I’m so gonna…Ji?” She looked down at her game to pause it and place on the back of the bench as she jumped up and ran around to hug her older brother.
“You did come!” She squealed.
“I did!” Kenji yelled back happily. “I missed you so much!”
“Dad said you would be coming, and I was so excited because I thought you were still in India. How was it? Did you eat a lot of spicy food? Did you pet an elephant?”
“Uh, I kinda just bummed around a camp, kiddo.” Kenji said. “I was…I wasn’t in a really good headspace…”
“Oh. I get it.” She said softly and rubbed her arm, then noticed Ben.
“Hi, Carmen.” Ben said nervously.
“Hi?” She asked.
“Oh, Carmen, this is Ben. He’s my…my boyfriend.” Kenji said.
Carmen looked from Ben to Kenji and back.
“Oh, no, he’s way too good looking for you.” She said, shaking her head.
“Hey!” Kenji yelled.
Ben watched them bicker for a bit and smiled as Kenji pulled his sister close and started giving the smaller Kon sibling a noogie. He reached into his book bag and quickly plucked a receipt out of a bag, holding it out to them.
“Kenji?” He called and they both paused, Kenji grinning when he saw the black bag.
“We found something you might like.” Kenji said and took the bag, giving it to Carmen.
She reached in and pulled out a small Miles Morales plush gasping and hugging it to her chest.
“Oh, my gosh! I love him! How did you know?”
“It was mostly Ben.” Kenji said. “He made me watch the movie and I saw your snapchat posts and we saw it, so…”
She hugged Kenji, then Ben. “Thank you guys so much! I’ve asked Owen to keep an eye out and I’d pay him back, but he never understands what I mean!”
She smiled and hugged the plush again.
“Kenji, get in here!” She said, picking up her phone to take a picture with him. “Ben, you too!”
Ben awkwardly stood next to Kenji, who threw an arm around his waist as Carmen held up the plush and snapped a picture, Ben happy he smiled at the last second, not looking too awkward.
“Um…can I post that Ben’s your boyfriend?” Carmen asked, lowering her phone to look at her brother. “She…She kinda follows me still.”
“Yeah.” Kenji said. “Go ahead.”
“Ben?” She looked at him.
“I’m out and good. Go ahead.” He said, waving his hand.
“Okay. Annnnnd…post!” She said and smiled at the picture. Her smile fell and she touched under her chin.
“Carmen?” Ben asked.
“Oh!” She blinked and smiled. “So um…was the flight alright?”
“Yeah. Hey…” Kenji hugged her. “Are you sure you’re okay?”
“I am. I promise. I start my new school after break so, that’s fun.” She said.
“New schools are fun.” Ben said. “I had to start a new school too.”
“Oh. Why?” Carmen asked.
“…I was bullied. Really bad. Like, I could’ve died from an asthma attack bad.”
“What?” Carmen squawked.
“I was left outside overnight with my hands tied. I couldn’t get to my inhaler while I was panicking.” Ben said, looking at the floor. “No one really knew I had asthma. Inhalers cost like…six hundred dollars. And my bullies…I was scared they would take it or use it as ammunition.”
Carmen hugged Ben tight.
“You’re okay, right?” She asked, voice wobbly. “Like…now?”
“Yeah. My mom moved us to San Antonio where I met the coolest people and even moved to California with them. They’re going to move back again, so…I guess I’ll just find my own way from there.”
“You could move in with Kenji!” She said. “Since you’re boyfriends and all!”
“Uh, I think he wants to go back to Texas though, kiddo. That’s where he wants to set up shop.” Kenji said awkwardly.
“Long distance sucks!” Carmen huffed. “And besides! You can move into our old neighborhood when I was a baby!”
She turned to Ben. “We moved to Cali when I was like, six. And now…”
“Washington is really pretty.” Ben said with a tilt of his head.
“And I get to have so many cute raincoats and boots!” She said excitedly.
“Carmen hates the sun.” Kenji said.
“If you live in Texas, we can visit you as much as we want with Daddy’s plane!” She said. “And then you guys can come see us when summer gets too unbearable.”
Ben smiled.
“Any excuse to see you, Carmen.” He said. “You’re really cool for a high schooler.”
She blushed and smiled. “Thanks. I um…thanks.”
There was a knock on the doorframe and Ben felt his face heat when he saw the man.
“Hello.” He said, looking at Ben. “We have yet to meet. I am Kenji’s father, Kosei.”
He held out a hand and when Ben shook it, in engulfed his own smaller one in a warm, strong grip.
The man looked just like Kenji, save lighter hair with streaks of gray and a close trimmed beard. Ben would say he looked like a neater version of his favorite Overwatch character.
“Ben Pincus.” He said softly.
Kosei made a puzzled face. “Pincus? I feel like I know that name.”
Ben shrugged a bit, noting how the man had released his hand.
“Welcome to our home, Ben.” He said and smiled warmly, Ben blushing harder.
Kenji blinked. And paled when he saw how pink Ben’s blush was.
‘…left overnight with my hands tied…’
He remembered something he had long buried away.
“Fuck.” He said out loud.

A Fervid Greeting
Chapter Warnings: N/A
Word Count: 7260
Chris was watching the bacon and eggs cook as Seungmin and Changbin quietly watched TV when he heard his cell phone ring. He picked it up from the counter. Seeing the contact name and number, he answered. "Chris Bang speaking."
"Morning, Chris." Said police chief Jinyoung Park. "I didn't wake you up, did I?"
"No, sir. What's happening?"
"If you tune into the news, you can find out. I recorded it for you, so you don't have to turn on the TV and wait for them to repeat the message."
"Well," Chris looked over his shoulder. "A couple of the boys are watching a show right now, so that was awfully kind of you."
Jinyoung laughed. "I'm sending it to you now. I expect you boys to be at the station by seven."
"That shouldn't be a problem, sir."
"Good. See you then, Double Knock."
"Until then, sir." Chris ended the call, then stuffed his phone into his jeans. He turned around to face the living room and felt his phone vibrate; Chief Jinyoung had sent the video. "Changbin, Seungmin!" They glanced at their leader.
"Breakfast is ready. Come and fix your plates while I wake up Felix and Hyunjin. We need to be at city hall by seven." Said Chris.
"What happened?" Asked Changbin, stopping at the part of the counter closest to the living room as Chris came closer and Seungmin passed them to enter the kitchen.
"I don't know, but it's on the news." Chris paused beside the couch. Seungmin was busy making his plate. "Though, the chief did just send me a video of the news report." Chris took out his phone, swiped to view the message, and held it out.
Changbin took it. "Thanks, hyung."
"Don't mention it. Be right back." Chris said, and Changbin nodded. Changbin set down the phone on the island and took a plate from the overhead cupboards as Seungmin sat at the island and played the video. Chris left the living room and skidded across the antiqued brown wooden floor that was also in the kitchen and upstairs hallway.
Unlike the white drywall of the entrance and upstairs areas, the living room had wallpaper that was red like a wilted rose and patterned like the fur of a tabby cat. Its carpet was tawny brown, and matching light absorbing curtains were distributed in every room of the house. The only other rooms that had carpet were the bedrooms, studio and dojo. The doors of Bang Manor were simple: white with silver door knobs. But the black front door had an elegant, translucent window arch at its top. Matching window panels were on either side of that door.
Chris grasped the wooden handrail that matched the floor. The banisters were black metal rods, the newels the same wood as the handrail. He jogged up and walked to the first door on his left. Chris knocked before entering and heard Felix mewl. Chris flicked on the light and watched the boy pull himself up and stretch his arms with a silent yawn.
The bedroom was full of stuffed animals of every size and smelled of laundry and Doritos, its walls white except for one. Most of the plushies were squished into the hammock that hung from the far left corner of the room and stretched across the far wall, while others were on the bookshelf that had no books, it and the closet with folding doors on the right wall, and more were on the floor near his bed. His bedding was black, the pillows and underside of the blanket crimson red. The wall his bed was horizontal to had a mural of a fiery plain with a mountain of gold and jewels surrounded by burning forest. A flaming sword stuck out from the treasure, and fiery lightning rained upon the scene from black clouds speckled with embers.
"Time to wake up, Felix. We've got a meeting at city hall in an hour. There's eggs and bacon in the kitchen. Changbin has my phone, so you can catch up on what's happening." Chris said.
"OK. Thanks." The boy mumbled, rubbing his eyes. Chris left the room, closing the door behind him. He continued rightwards and knocked on the third and final door on that side of the hall before opening the door and turning on the light.
Hyunjin's bedroom walls were white, and the farthest had black illustrations depicting a red eyed figure sitting at the edge of a rooftop, looking onto the city below. An identical figure stalked a lanky figure with yellow eyes wielding a bloody knife. Finally, the red eyed man stood above the crumpled body of the skinny man, the assassin's dripping red hidden blade visible from his left sleeve. Blood spilled from the corpse and splattered onto the wall, which was patterned like brick. Above these scenes was a mantra in red: I am not blind.
There was a shrine to the right side of the room with framed pictures of each of the Stray Kids, along with a closet with folding doors. The five white candles were unlit, and the tea cup was empty, spare for the specks of leaves. Chris smelled the mirth Hyunjin had burned and Hyunjin's scent of lemongrass. His bedding was black but wasn't as cozy looking as Felix's, the pillowcases striped black and white. Hyunjin let out a whine as he stirred.
"Hyunjin, we have to be at city hall in an hour. There's breakfast in the kitchen, and the Chief sent me a video of what's going on you can look at with Felix." Said Chris.
"OK, I'm coming." Replied Hyunjin. Chris nodded, then left the bedroom and closed the door. He went downstairs and heard Felix's door open. Felix, in a loose orange shirt and black pyjama pants, crossed the hall to the bathroom between Chris' and Changbin's rooms. The second bathroom was through the first door on the right wall of the living room, the studio and dojo doors following it, to the left.
As he passed through the living room, Chris saw the television had been turned off. Chris ran a hand along the arm of the black couch. The loveseat and recliner matched the couch, but the recliner was made of leather. The coffee table had a black wooden frame with a foggy glass surface. He observed the picture in a simple black frame that was above the electric fireplace, behind the loveseat and recliner. Posed formally in their hero suits with mayor Brandon Gorge and the police chief before a blue backdrop were the Stray Kids.
Chris recalled how nervous they were before they were declared heroes with real powers instead of vigilantes with gimmicks up their sleeves. He remembered how they cried on the nights leading up to that day, afraid they would be falsely accused and imprisoned just for acting upon what came naturally to them. There wasn't even a court hearing: just a meeting at the city hall where the press was allowed an audience. While there were negative opinions, the general outlook of the public was loud enough for the city officials to properly analyse the evidence in front of them. This morning had a similar atmosphere, even though Chris hadn't seen the news report.
Changbin and Seungmin sat at the island. They each had a glass of orange juice. Chris met Changbin's eyes as he walked in. "Chan, this is pretty serious." Changbin said, tapping the cellphone that was face up on the counter. "You should really have a look at this."
"I will, Changbin." Replied Chris. "Let me fix my plate, and I'll do just that." Changbin gave a nod and stuffed his face with more bacon as Chan walked over and got a plate. He served himself, then sat beside Changbin and ate while he unlocked his phone and played the video.
The news anchor greeted the viewers and stated it was 6:00 o'clock, February 8, 2020. She said they would begin the news hour with breaking news. Residents of the Elizabeth Apartments had reported sounds of distress from the room next door to police around 3:15, that morning. (Chris heard Hyunjin come downstairs and briefly watched him enter the bathroom.) The victim was twenty year old Faith Lawson and the suspect her boyfriend, twenty one year old Han Jisung.
The neighbors who reported the kidnapping said the following to their news correspondent, some time after police arrived. (Felix entered the kitchen and said 'good morning'. Changbin and Seungmin answered him.) A middle aged husband and wife were shown with the male reporter outside of the apartments. (Felix got his plate and began to put food on it.)
The woman said they were awakened by Faith's sudden screaming. They heard Jisung tell Faith that she should 'Be still and quiet, and it won't be so bad.'. The husband said that they heard the couple having intercourse, the night before. (Hyunjin came out of the bathroom and walked into the kitchen and greeted the boys, who responded. He got a plate and filled it as Felix sat beside Seungmin.)
When the reporter asked if Faith and Jisung had ever fought, the husband and wife said 'no', that they seemed like a normal, happy couple. (Hyunjin took the empty stool beside Felix.) The video cut back to the newsroom. She said that the police had released censored photos of the crime scene and surveillance footage. She gave a graphic violence warning, then the video was played.
The camera in the lobby caught Jisung finishing his flight down the stairs, Faith over his shoulder. She was bound at her wrists and ankles with zip ties. Her forehead bled, an excessively large black bar edited to cover her wound. A copper coloured metal device with a detailed, key-like handle kept her mouth open. The outdoor camera showed a loitering black car. The driver opened the back door on the passenger side, then Jisung forced Faith in the backseat before entering behind her as slamming the door shut as the car sped away.
The reporter was shown again. She said that the car had arrived just minutes before Jisung was recorded fleeing the crime scene. The license plate of the vehicle had been captured, but the car hadn't been found. The screen swiped left to shows list of information about the car, driver, suspect and victim. Along with information already stated in the report, the woman said that the driver wore a copper coloured mask with an upside down cone shape carved into the forehead.
The anchor announced they would now show the photos. The scene was in the bedroom, the focus on the bed. The bedding was a mess, blood, saliva and urine on the sheets and pillows. The reporter said that police theorized that Jisung had woken Faith and struck her head with the device that was seen gagging her. The anchor stated that if anyone had any information on where the vehicle or Jisung had been after the kidnapping to contact the police as the number was shown at the bar at bottom of the screen. Then the video ended.
Chris blew hot air through his lips. "I'm surprised how much information the police released, but I guess they did it to warn the public." Seungmin and Hyunjin nodded, humming. "That's fucking scary." Everyone nodded and gave noises of agreement.
"Do you mind if I watch it again?" Asked Hyunjin. "I didn't see all of it."
"Of course." Chris answered, and pushed his phone into Hyunjin's hand. He played if again, Felix looking over to watch too. While the video played again, Seungmin rose from his stool, carried his plate to the sink and washed it.
"I wonder if this Jisung guy has a criminal record?" Pondered Seungmin.
"I guess we'll find out, when we get there." Replied Chris.
"He doesn't look like a criminal, at least." Commented Felix.
"That doesn't say anything about him, personality wise." Hyunjin said, as Seungmin seated himself again and Changbin rose to wash his plate. "Lots of bad people look unsuspicious."
"You make a point."
"Obviously, there's more going on than a simple kidnapping." Said Seungmin. "Whatever he used to subdue Faith with, it's some kind of medieval torture device."
"Yep yep," Replied Chris. "But it's nearly impossible to tell what it is, since we've only seen in use."
"I doubt the police have any guesses, either." Changbin said, returning to his chair. "And since we don't know where the car is, we'll have a harder time tracking them down."
"All we can do is find out what else the police know and do our best to find these guys and get Faith out of danger before it's too late." Chris said, and the other boys nodded. Soon enough, they all finished eating. Hyunjin volunteered to wash the dishes, so the boys went upstairs and into their room to change. While Seungmin's room was the third on the right side, Changbin's was first on the left and Chris' the second.
Chris' room had white walls, the left having posters of the Stray Kids illustrated like comic book characters by artists from a big comic book company. Individual portraits and group shots were scattered around the wall in an appealing way. Chris always chuckled when he looked upon certain posters. He had a lot of plushies in his his room, though not nearly as many as Felix had. They were neatly displayed on a bookshelf that had some books, the shelf on the wall opposite of the poster wall. Chris' bed was vertical to the far wall, the closet next to the shelf.
Chris opened his closet and took his suit from within. He removed his steel blue pyjama top and black pyjama pants that had thin white lines to make a checked pattern. Chris stepped into the matte charcoal one-piece spandex enforced with a thin layer of cotton for comfort and a cowl collar. The pitch black kneepads and elbow guards were enforced with steel-every members' gear was. The biceps, thighs and each side of the rib cage had three glossy black, diagonal strips of fake alligator skin tipped like spikes.
Chris brought out his gauntlets, which were made with glossy black leather and had steel knuckles and backside. The gloves had the stripes from the one-piece, except these looped around to the bottom. Chris took out and put on a black leather belt that had two pouches on either side. Its buckle was matte silver and had the letters DKC in black. Chris found his black leather boots, which came up to the middle of his shins, had a polished finish and had steel toes and soles. The bottom of the shoes had very good grips and were well padded, so Chris was able to be sneaky, despite the steel components. Finally, Chris put on his black leather cape that went a couple of inches past his knees and was tied to the collar of his costume with a lumberman's knot.
Chris exited his bedroom and saw Felix's bedroom door was halfway open. He saw Changbin behind the younger boy, helping an audibly struggling Felix zip up his black leather, full length sleeved shirt with a straight band collar. Felix had black leather pants held up by a black leather belt with a simple golden buckle with a pouch on the back, and kneepads. He had black leather shoes with half inch heels and steel toes and black leather fingerless gloves with his palms exposed.
"Ow, ow, ow!" Cried Felix, reaching a hand back and bending backwards a little.
"Well, if you stopped moving every time I move the zipper a milometer, you wouldn't be in pain and I could actually do this, today! Aish!" Changbin bickered. "Now straighten up." Felix complied, still whining.
"I should be able to do this in one go if..." Changbin jerked at the zipper, grunting. Felix continued to whimper, and cringed up his face. "If... argh, come on."
"Changbin," Chris said, walking into the room as Changbin and Felix watched him come in. "Let me take care of it."
"Yes, thank you." Changbin said, stepping aside, shaking out his hands. His costume had a waist length cape over his right shoulder that was white with a royal blue underside. It had a golden stripe along the edge and was attached to Changbin by an elastic strap under his arm. His long sleeved blouse with a Peter Pan collar and his harem pants were royal blue with white cuffs, the shirt's buttons and the two decorative buttons on the crotch white. He wore white leather boots with a golden stripe over the folded top parts of the shoes.
Chris came up behind Felix and grabbed onto the zipper. "OK, when I say 'three', suck in your guts."
"Wait, won't my shirt rip when I breathe out?" Felix replied, looking over his shoulder with doe eyes.
"If your powers are still working, no." Chris laughed, and so did Felix and Changbin. "Ready?"
"Yeah."
"OK: one... two... three!" Zip! Pop, crack!
"Aw," Felix said, right hand on his left shoulder as he rolled the joint and turned to look at his hyungs. "Did you guys hear that?"
Changbin and Chris chuckled, nodding. Chris said, "We did, yeah. You feeling alright, 'lix?"
"Yeah," Felix nodded. "I'm good. Ouch."
"Your breathing feels OK?"
"Yeah, feels fine, mate."
"OK, good!" Chris patted Felix's left shoulder, and Felix flinched, contorting his expression in reaction. "Sorry."
"You're fine..."
"Come on." Chris said, nodding to the exit. Felix gave a small nod as he and Changbin followed Chris out. Chris almost ran into Hyunjin, who was busy fiddling with the white cloth wrappings beneath his fingerless, black leather gloves. They jumped as Hyunjin's forearm brushed Chris'. Changbin and Felix stopped for a moment to take it what happened before continuing.
"Whoa! Sorry, Hyunjin." Said Chris, subconsciously raising his hand to gesture.
"It's fine, hyung." Hyunjin replied. "I wasn't looking where I was going." Hyunjin wore a sleeveless black shirt with a very low tuxedo collar that exposed the middle of his chest. It didn't take much movement for his nipples and toned but flat belly to be exposed. He wore black tights, black knee pads each with a tiny, four pointed white star, a belt with three pouches on his right hip, a jedok geom and dan geom with black handles on the other, and lightweight, all black slip-on shoes.
Chris massaged Hyunjin's shoulder. "Ah, it's fine. Come on." Hyunjin nodded, then followed Chris downstairs. He heard Seungmin leave his room as they went. Once at the bottom of the stairs, Chris looked back to watch Seungmin descend.
His costume consisted of a plum purple jumpsuit with long sleeves and gold cuffs, and a cape that ended halfway down his back. The cape was held by a clasp shaped like a hickory brown clover outlined in gold, and hickory brown slip-on shoes. Seeing that Hyunjin was on his way, Chris proceeded to lead the group outside. They walked left, to the garage attached to the house. "Why are we going to the garage from outside instead of from the dojo?" Seungmin asked.
Chris laughed. "Oh yeah." Hyunjin and Felix laughed. "Oh well! We're outside now." They arrived at the garage door and Chris pressed the button on his keychain to open it. When it was up just enough, they ducked under it and dashed to the black van with their logo on both sides.
"It's so dark in here." Said Felix. Chris unlocked the car, and it honked as its headlights flashed.
As everyone climbed inside the vehicle, Seungmin said, "Aren't you basically—?"
"—Oh yeah." The car rumbled with laughter as the doors were closed and the boys buckled up.
"Man, you really aren't a morning person, are you, Felix?" Said Hyunjin, as Chris started the engine.
"No," Felix shook his head, still smiling. "I'm really not."
Chris pulled out of the garage as Changbin ruffled Felix's hair. Felix gave a cry of protest and reached for his hand. Even though Felix had it, Changbin didn't let up. "Ah, but you're still cute."
"Stooop, oh my God." Felix playfully thrashed in his seat, kicking Seungmin's seat.
"Ah! You stop!" Seungmin shouted, reaching back to swipe at Felix's legs. As the Kids laughed, Felix pulled back his legs and swiped back.
—
Chris pulled into the curb in front of the police station. The lawn was littered with news reporters and camera men. "Oh yeah, the press is here."
"Of course they would be," Said Hyunjin, rather cheerfully. "This is the first time the city has called us for something like this."
Seungmin hummed. "The last time we came here under these kind of circumstances, we were finding out if we'd be allowed to be heroes, or not."
"We'd better get out there, guys." Chris said, turning off the ignition. "Let's go." The group left the van, Chris locking it once he saw everyone was out. Chris led the group up the gradual incline of the staircase, Changbin first behind him with the younger three close behind.
"Mr. Bang!" "Double Knock, sir!" "Excuse me, Mr. Bang!" The shouting voices of the reporters flooded the boys' ears as they marched forward. "Do you have any information about the suspect or his victim?" "Mr. Bang, do you have any insight on the case or the suspect's motive?" "Sir, do you believe that Stray Kids should be allowed to freely defend the city, as they currently do?"
The Kids weren't obligated to answer. In fact, they were legally prohibited from making any statement to the public without consent from the city. That didn't mean Chris didn't want to answer. He wanted to respond so they would stop asking the same questions time and again, but he couldn't, and that was just something he had to accept. It wasn't just to save face for the city or the police, it was to save face for the boys and to make sure no false information would be released. The media had been told this, four months ago, yet acted that their questions could be answered, or needed to be answered. It was one of the frustrating things about the job, and, today, it took a bit of effort for the boys to mute their voices.
The quintet were a little more than halfway to the doors of the building when Chris felt off. He stopped and looked among the crowd for something to click. "Chan hyung?" Said Hyunjin.
"Who... who called..." Chris muttered, Hyunjin and Changbin only hearing him because of how close they were to him.
"Who called what?" Changbin asked.
"That voice, where is...?" Chris' eyes flared open ever so slightly as he found a familiar face. "Minho." The boys easily found the handsome face of the man in the mint blue and white suit and held their breaths. His normally brown eyes were blood red and continually released a scentless black smoke.
"What are you doing here?" Asked Chris. The voices and movements of the reporters fell to a hush as he spoke.
"Who is he talking to?" Inquired a woman.
"Ha, he is a madman!" Exclaimed a male. "Go check into a mental ward, ya fucking lawless degen—"
"Hush!" Barked Hyunjin. "Let our leader do his job, please!"
"I don't know how you're making it so only we can see you," Chris said. A couple people murmured in wonder and doubt. "But I sure as hell know you're treading thin waters, Minho."
Minho drew out his breath as he inhaled through his teeth. To the surprise of the heroes, they were stained black. The smell of burned flesh slapped everyone within five feet instantly. The press reacted with nauseous expressions and sounds, stepping back or turning away to cough and hold in vomit. The Kids also turned to recover, but Chris swallowed the unfurling knot in his stomach and kept eye contact with Minho, refusing to show any sign of weakness to the serial killer.
"He's actually here?" A reporter said, her volume slightly lower than normal.
"Holy shit, what kind of power is this?!" Cried a male.
"Do you want me to answer what I'm doing here, or the secret to my new trick?"
"Why are you here, Minho?" Demanded Chris.
Minho gave a small smile and folded his hands in front of his abdomen. "Faith is alive. Jisung and I would love to—" Suddenly, the doors to the hall opened. Minho paused and let his hands fall to his side. Everyone watched the mayor and police chief come outside with a handful of officers.
Brandon had a friendly face and build and had a mauve tie with his light grey suit. Jinyoung looked familiar to a lot of people, but no one could quite put their finger on whom. He donned an all grey suit and his tie was matte silver. They had barely taken two steps when Jinyoung saw what what happening and put his arm in front of Brandon. The mayor stumbled back a bit, then gave a small gasp upon seeing what was before him. One of the officers whispered in Jinyoung's ear and received order 10-23.
"Hello, Mr. Gorge, Mr. Park." Greeted Minho, with a small wave. "Do I have permission to finish my explanation, or must I leave before I spill the wine necessary for the vines to grow?" Chris quirked an eyebrow and looked among his members, who also looked a bit puzzled.
Brandon and Jinyoung looked at each other. Brandon nodded. A moment later, so did Jinyoung. The police chief answered, "Go on, Minho. You have our attention."
"Thank you. So!" Minho clapped his hands, then folded his hands again. "Jisung and I would love to meet you boys at the asylum, at 3:53 PM: no sooner, no later. If you open those doors early or one minute past the designated time, the ritual will not only fail and make the core of the Earth expand to the point of destroying the planet!" Minho laughed for two seconds, then his laughter cut short. "I'm kidding."
Chris said, "I was going to say, Minho—"
"—Ah ah ah!" Minho wiggled his finger warningly. "There will still be a dire consequence for an early or late entry!"
"And what is that?"
"We'll be so upset that we can't free our girlfriend that we'll light the entire city on fire!" Minho flung his arms out side with a broad smile.
"Seriously?"
"Yeah, seriously." Minho nodded. "Anyway," He sang, and ran a hand through his hair. "That's all you need to know."
"We expect the angels to show up and try to stop us. You'll probably see one within minutes of coming inside, and they'll probably help you, or at least try. We'll see. It'll be fun." He wiggled the fingers of one hand. "Have fun at the meeting, boys! Bye now!"
Minho threw his head back. Chris instinctively reached out, even though he didn't know what to expect. Minho fell backwards as a fiery magic circle appeared in the stone stairs with a deafening bang like a rife had been fired. The crowd screamed, cowered and flinched. Some of the police did, too.
The Kids looked surprised but were able to find strength by looking at each other. Seungmin noticed the circle didn't erase the steps but wrapped around them and decided to remember that. A plethora of frostbitten arms with clawed fingers grabbed Minho and quickly pulled him through like he was a doll made of cloth. The circle disappeared with a bang, leaving no trace behind. More shrieks were given at the sound. As the people recovered, Chris turned his attention to the mayor and chief. His confident gaze was mirrored by Jinyoung.
"Come on, Kids." Said Jinyoung, directing their eyes to him. Nodding and shivering, the five quietly left the press alone.
—
Three watchtowers and small officer stations at their feet were lined up thirty feet apart in the middle of the Ocean, the one hundred by eighty foot lot that connected the four wings. They had female names in an attempt to make the asylum less dreary to inmates and visitors. The Ocean was boxed in by twenty feet tall, unpainted stone walls with steel walkways leading from one wing to the other. Steel stairs were in each corner. Six flower boxes of white and purple hyacinths were lined up outside the facilities and security stations. The boxes were blanketed in snow, but parts of the flowers peeked out from the cold powder.
Alicia was located east, serving as the residential and intensive care centre. She had three floors, the third being the underground intensive care level. Her ash white exterior was lined with vibrant red paint along the top and bottom, her roof grey. The clock tower in the left part of her body showed it was 3:48 in Roman numerals, a guarded platform below thirty feet above the ground. There was also a patrol on the level roof beside the clock.
Eva, the medical ward, was west. She looked identical to Alicia but had no clock tower and only had two floors. Sara, the entrance and parking lot, was north. The stone wall had a small weakness in the electric gate, but in case of an emergency, with the press of a button, three rows of spiked metal poles would thrust up from the ground. This security measure had yet to have been used, but it had been tested with a dummy driver and proven to be a viable asset.
Maria, the graveyard and garden, was south. There was no stone wall or electric fence where Maria met the Atlantic. The graveyard was neatly laid out to the west, the wooden benches and wide flowerbeds of more hyacinths to the east. There were ten headstones: four names belonged to patients from the first floor, and three belonged to patients from the second floor. Two belonged to stillborn children, though one hadn't been given a name but still had the name of her mother inscribed, and the tenth was that of the inmate who had murdered the three.
The police and Stray Kids had gathered at the asylum at two o'clock. Hyunjin was throwing his dan geom at a sandbag near Alicia and pulling it back with the white glow of his powers. One could tell that his speed was a little faster than the pair of watching officers' eyes could keep up with. "Uh, that's 471...?" Said an officer whose surname was Walker, hesitantly.
"475," Hyunjin politely corrected, pausing his exercise with the weapon in his hand to look at him. "But you were close."
"It's getting awfully close to 3:53." Said the other officer, Bridges, gazing up at the clock as Hyunjin resumed his practice.
Walker nodded. "That it is. I wonder if Chief Park is going to call one last meeting to go over everything, again."
Hyunjin replied, "Probably not. We're playing with time and demons, here."
"That's true enough." Walker nodded. Hyunjin caught his dan geom and sheathed it in one motion.
"I'm going to wait for the guys by the door." Said Hyunjin, resting his hands on his hips and looking from one man to the other, his eyes also drifting to the dozen officers standing by the doors. "Thanks for staying to watch, guys. Even if it got boring, after one hundred."
They both laughed. Bridges said, "Don't mention it, Ghost. We'll walk with you." Some ten feet behind them, Chris was delivering blows to the bags three officers were holding, alternating targets and how he attacked.
He brought up one leg in a jump kick and pushed himself off the sac with the other, the officer who held the bag staggering as Chris was launched across the ways and landing ten quick stomps to the second bag, switching from foot to foot. The officer who held this bag was the best built of his peers, but he still needed to plant himself firmly into the ground to avoid being blown back at least five feet from Chris' power. Chris landed with a thump that had less impact on the beaten up earth because he wasn't wearing his own boots. His momentum boosted him rightwards, to the third bag. He pulled back his arms and whacked it upwards with his left arm, immediately followed by his right to make a 'double knot'.
With a choked laugh, the man who held this bag stepped around a bit. "Oof!"
"You alright, Shorts?" Chris asked, relaxing his posture and rolling his right shoulder.
He nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine. What a rush, ha ha ha!"
"Glad you're still having fun." Chris smiled and patted his left shoulder. "You sure you don't want to switch out?"
"Yeah, I'm sure. I've only been here fifteen minutes, I can keep going."
"Daren," Said Johnson, the officer with the second bag. "You really should take a break." He looked behind him. "It's getting real close to that time, anyway."
Chris turned to look at the clock with the officers and raised his eyebrows. "Oh, damn! Guess it's time to gather everyone."
Shorts gave a nod to Alicia. "Ghost is already ahead of you." Chris and the other two men looked in her direction. Hyunjin gave Chris a wave, and Chris waved back.
"That he is!"
The third officer, Island, said, "Chief Park will probably call everyone over, in a mo—"
"This if Chief Park to all officers in the DCA: please alert the Stray Kids to gather at the door and proceed to said destination. Two minutes and thirty seconds until entry. Over."
"Yep." Said Johnson.
"Walk with us, Double Knock?" Said Island.
Chris gave a nod. "Of course." The four started their short walk and blended into Hyunjin and the two officers. "All warmed up, Hyunjin?" He nodded. "Good, good." Chris turned to watch out for whoever came next.
Seungmin and Changbin jogged over, Chief Jinyoung close behind with eight officers. Chris looked around the yard for Felix and scarcely saw him leap from the steel platform from the nearest watchtower and land hands first, the boy bounding forth like a cat until he was somewhat close to the others and then standing, shaking out his arms a little. "You alright, Felix?" Inquired Chris.
"Yeah, I'm fine. That wasn't too high of a jump." Felix responded. Chris nodded.
"All right," The voice of the Chief drew everyone's attention. "I don't have time to go over every part of this operation in detail, but I don't need to. Remember to check your surroundings and be prepared to make split second decisions. So long as you follow protocol and keep your heads on your shoulders, all should go well, and, ideally, there should be no casualties."
"It is likely there will be casualties, but it is our mission to minimize those numbers and save not just the patients and staff of the asylum, who are on lockdown, but to save the city from the evil threatening to burst from the schemes of Minho and Jisung. I'll be waiting out here, but know that I, along with every citizen of our city, will be with you in spirit." Jinyoung looked to an officer beside him. "Marley, how much time until 'go'?"
"Twenty-three, twenty-one, twenty..." Counted the man, who held a cellphone. With amazing efficiency, the Stray Kids moved to the front of the mass, the police force behind them in four full columns and a fifth column that had vacant one spot. They marched forward, Marley walking behind them to continue his task. "Thirteen, twelve, eleven..."
Chris felt a pair of eyes staring at him and found the wavering eyes of Seungmin. "Ten, nine..." Chris discreetly moved his hand over Seungmin's and gently tapped his skin. "Eight, seven..." Seungmin swallowed and fumbled his fingers until he held Chris' hand.
"We'll be OK, Seungmin-ie, I promise." Chris muttered. His voice swayed the interest of the other Kids. Seungmin sniffled and nodded. Hyunjin stood on the other side of Seungmin, and he rubbed Seungmin's arm.
"Three, two, one, zero." Marley glanced up from the phone and nodded once to Chris. "Negative one—"
"Go, go!" Shouted Chief Jinyoung. Not wasting time, the group strode forward and entered the asylum. The decently decorated lobby had sky blue walls, a tacky grey carpet and cheap cushioned chairs. The secretary, like all staff outside of medical and security, had already evacuated. The far end of the room were glass sliding doors, emergency steel doors retracted into the wall.
As the force went through the doors and began to pass the huge holding cell on their left, a voice came from the radios of the officers. "Dispatch to Adam, Boy, Charles and David: the city has not caught fire. Repeat: the city has not caught fire. Over."
"That's the immediate danger out of the way, good." Said Chris with a heavy sigh, ensuring his voice could be heard by at least those directly behind him. The holding cell had steel white bars and benches against the far wall and mats on the concrete floor, which continued outside of the cell. The walkway to the white door at the end of the room had several windows that looked into the cafeteria on the right wall.
"What's the time?" Asked Changbin, who was to the right of Chris. Felix was at Changbin's right.
Alley, a female from the second row, answered, "3:53:42, forty-three..."
"It's still too early to be sure that the city is safe." Said Russell, a man from the fourth row.
"I agree." Replied Chris, the other boys and some of the men nodding. It took group about twenty-five seconds to arrive at the door. They stopped, and Seungmin stepped up to the door. He pressed his hands and his left ear to its surface.
"Clear." Seungmin stated. He stepped back into line and Chris took his place to open the door. He had almost put his hand on the doorknob when a spider leapt through the window, its bristles roughly touching Chris' right cheek. The spider flew over Chris' shoulder and landed on the ground. As several officers gasped and began to raise their handguns, only to realize it was just a spider, Chris pivoted and saw the tarantula wasn't moving.
"It's dead?" Chris said, questioningly.
Seungmin nodded. "Tarantulas can't survive long falls. They get hurt even if dropped from a foot high. Though some species are more aggressive, it is mostly because they are Old World species or because of mood. They are mostly harmless. Their bites can hurt, but..." He shook his head and crossed his arms. "They require humid habitats. How did this spider get here?"
"The Devil, probably." Answered Addison, an officer from the fifth row, and a handful of them laughed.
"That's probably not far from the truth, actually." Seungmin said, bobbing his head. He made eye contact with Chris. "Allow me to examine its corpse, before we move on."
"Of course, go ahead." Chris said, nodding. Seungmin gave a nod in response before kneeling before the creature. He gingerly poked it with a finger and sharply held his breath. His breath shuddered, and he swallowed loudly. "Seungmin?" The boy's torso jolted, his eyes whipping up to Chris' and then relaxing. "Talk to us, please."
"S-Sure. This is a South American Pink Toe." Seungmin carefully picked up the spider and turned it over in his hands as he got to his feet. He looked at his peers while speaking. "Its pink colour darkens into maturity, and they live from seven to nine years."
"They are arboreal, meaning they live in trees. This gave them the name Antilles tree spider. They grow up to six inches, and this adult female is five inches. I noticed a strong magical presence from it, when it came through the window. It's gone now, but it stayed long enough for me to intercept how the sender felt, when it was created." Seungmin's eyes lowered. "It was Faith..."
"Wait, that means Jisung and Minho have already changed her." Felix said. "They've already won. So was the whole 3:53 PM thing just to lure us in?"
"Probably, yeah."
"It might not mean they've won, Felix." Said Changbin. "Just that they've done enough to make her able to do this." He pointed at the spider.
"What did you feel when you touched the spider, Seungmin-ie?" Asked Chris.
"Intense throbbing pain where my jaw starts." Seungmin rubbed beneath his ears. "My tongue felt alienated and cold, like it had nothing around it. It felt like I had been crying for hours. I felt so helpless, so small and weak, unable to do anything but obey."
"I'd like to find one of these alive, but I doubt I'll be that lucky. I feel as if something is hiding in our little friend." Seungmin turned his head to Felix. "Felix, would you mind—?" Felix widened his eyes and shook his head. Seungmin, Felix and Hyunjin laughed. Chris and Changbin joined, a few of the officers chuckling along.
"I'll do it, Seungmin." Hyunjin said, stepping closer and withdrawing his dan geom. He cautiously sliced open the spider, from its abdomen to its chelicerae. Its blood colour was normal, but scentless black smoke accompanied the liquid. When Hyunjin and Seungmin saw the smoke, their eyes flew open. Hyunjin took a hasteful step back, and Seungmin quickly put the spider down, keeping his face as far away from the spider as he could.
"I don't smell anything wrong with the smoke." Felix commented, shaking his head. "I do see something that looks an awful lot like a crystal in the front part of its body, though."
"Do you want to get it?" Asked Seungmin. Felix froze up for a second, then shook his head. "I thought so." Seungmin crouched before the tarantula and carefully picked into its body with his fingers to extract the white object. He held it in two of his fingers and rolled it between them. "It sure feels like a real crystal."
"Lemme see." Felix said, coming over to Seungmin, who moved the item into his palms. Felix touched it with one finger and rolled it around Seungmin's palm a little. "Yep, that's a real crystal. I'd ask if I could keep it, but I don't wanna be cursed, or something."
"I do feel a faint magical aura from it," Seungmin said. "But it doesn't feel malicious. If anything, it feels malevolent. Might even be lucky. You can keep it on you for now if you want, Felix."
"Cool." Felix took the crystal and stored it in his pouch. He quietly added, "Yay!" Hearing him, Seungmin chuckled.
"OK, let's move on." Said Chris, as Seungmin stooped down and got a small plastic bag from one of his pouches. He shimmied the tarantula into it as everyone but Hyunjin moved on, and sealed the bag before standing, placing the spider in a different pocket before jogging to catch up with Hyunjin. Chris waited for them at the door, the officers acting upon their order to divide and investigate both ways the hall went. When they passed through, Chris began to pull the door closed, but was shocked to feel the door slam itself.
"Well, that can't be good." Said Chris. Hyunjin and Seungmin laughed. "Come on, this way." He nodded to his right, and they hurried to return to the front of their group.

so i’m watching house hunters renovations and losing my mind over this couple covering up a BEAUTIFUL original floor to ceiling brick fireplace with some ugly ass artificial stone so tell me: if you were designing a dream house what would be the vibes? 👀
Alright one: why would you EVER cover up a brick fireplace like that? Bitches are crazy.
Two: I have so many thoughts about a house I will never own.
I crave hardwood floors. I want wood for days! Walk in through the front door and there's a little place to hang everything up and sit down on a bench before you even enter the house. I see dark blues and whites here.
The living room has a couch along the wall (not sure the material but not leather, I want to be able to keep my skin) and a gorgeous, wide window with thick curtains so there's actual darkness when I want privacy. This is open, inviting, the entertainment happens here. Whether that's cocktails on the coffee table, or hooking up a movie or game to the tv along the other wall.
Most of the house is in pastels and a few rooms have rich dark colours. Living room is definitely a pastel sea green.
Kitchen is yellow, small window is always open, island is full of utensils, glass fridge is full of colours. It's got all the modern accessories but the colours and textures feel like you're at grandma's house. Dishwasher is a must.
The dinner room is separated by a half wall, in a similar sea green colour and a simple wood oval table with a few leaflets so company never has to sit apart.
Downstairs, there's a guest suit which is kept quite empty for whoever stays over (just for the night, or for a little while, if you need it). This room is a gorgeous dark blue that makes the light queen bed and side table stand out. There's also a bathroom and sitting area with darker couches and chairs for those times you just want to sit upside down and get drunk with your friends.
The other side of the basement is a dance studio with marley floors, a moveable bar, one row of mirrors and a sound system. Because, obviously.
On the main floor, near the back of the house is a small closed door area in a maroon red colour with two recliners and a pile of cushions. It's next two the back window which has simple lace curtains, and a wall to wall black bookshelf. There's a wooden desk beside it with enough room for a laptop and a notebook.
Up the stairs in the center of the house (picture the living room, dining room, kitchen, second bathroom, and reading room, surrounding a set of open stairs with sturdy metal railings on either side) is the master bedroom and bathroom.
The bedroom is a lilac purple with a bay window and a window seat. The connecting master bath has a clawfoot tub in one corner with a shower attachment. Everything is bright and soothing and functional.
That's a big thing for me: everything in the house serves a purpose. Nothing is for show.
Lots of bright colours, the ability to have privacy and company. Functionality with a warm touch.
Something like that.

what does your dream home look like?
Small, one-story. Probably brick or stone, but preferably brick because I think that looks better. As little wood as possible. (Brick is prime building material because it doesn’t wear easily, and is heating in winter and cooling in summer)
My bedroom would be western-facing and on the south side of the house so it would be warmed by the sun, but also get the benefit of being able to see the stars rising through the windows. Also, skylights. One right above my bed, which would be in the corner because I’m a proponent of Corner Beds, but also along the ceiling. The walls: yellow, possibly wallpapered. Plants: abundant. A desk for certain. Also, a swivel chair. One of the super comfortable ones.
Study: A circular room in the back of the house, near the kitchen. High windows with window seats, and curtains to pull across them to make a nook. Possibly a full skylight, like an observatory, but this would make it very cold in wintertime so I’m not sure. Bookcases lining the walls - in fact, the doorway would be a secret door behind one. Lockable from the inside. In the center would be another desk with lots of compartments. Green and cream walls.
Kitchen: Probably nautical themed. Would include a nice little pantry, a sliding door that leads to the back porch, and your general kitchen necessities such as oven, table, dishwasher, etc. I think blue, white and silver for the color scheme in here.
Living Room: Small and cozy with a little fireplace and antiques on the mantle. This would probably be on the north side of the house. Very soft chairs, plus a loveseat. TV in the corner. Dog beds on the side for my dogs to sleep, but they’ll probably sneak into the chairs when I go to bed, knowing dogs.
Menagerie: For lack of a better term. This would be where I keep my tarantulas, snakes and other pets that can live comfortably in small enclosures, as well as their food. This one would be cut off from the rest of the house so it could be heated a few degrees higher, for the sake of the warm-weather animals therein. Obviously, a lot of natural light and shelf space, as well as a sink to provide easy access to water, and room for storing things like food, bedding, and cleaning supplies.
Yard: Very large, and open, surrounded by forests. I would need a large yard for my dogs, as well as chickens if I’m going to keep chickens. Secluded and good for walks.

Mafia GDragon x Reader
Summary:your father the Kim Sajangnim passed, he left you and JiYong in charge of his crime syndicate. You and JiYong have always had an easy affection, but he wants permanence and power.
Warning: just rich people stuff, real hot girl shit
A/N : @vampiratesgrl Holy smokes. This was a Namjoon imagine before this up to yesterday but with the big bang comeback and me watching all the interviews and countdowns all over again and some fr the first time, I'm faling in love with GD all over again. I really hope you like it, I'd hate for this to flop. I just return it to th Namjoon fic and upload it with changes. I was really inspired by @deermi Wonderwall pt4, A whale for the Killing by Faucault and @yuujispinkhair Kiss the ring I carry the crown, the big speech with Sukuna saying he's the most powerful guy MC would ever get. That speech inspired all of my WIPS rn.
A torrent of sooty clouds scuttled out of the mountains, white frosty early morning winds swirled up to marry the cloud wrack. The sky was still slate grey, caught at the crossroads between late night and early morning. Fog swallowed up the buildings below like sea foam, only their roofs could be seen like bright buoys. The briliant red and blue lights on satellite towers blinking in the distance like a lighthouse.
This building is far above the rest. A headland among islands in clusters, seeded among the thick fog like dragon's teeth. They looked like things of terror on black nights or now when corpse blankets of fog smother streets and skyscrapers alike.
Far off, several miles away out of the cloudbanks and miserable fog, I could see a black break, a slick surging body. I ran to the other wall facing the harbour. Boats slicing smoothly and disappearing from view. They left behind a plume of fine mist blown away quickly by the winds.
This city was a foreign entity to me.
My breath was fogging up the glass of the floor to ceiling windows, it was ice cold to the touch and I could feel the cold tentacles slithering up my arms from my fingertips. An unpleasant cold all over nipping my thighs. I was wearing white silky pajama set, the breast pocket below an embroidered name KJY.
The bedroom was treated similarly to the living room, large, opulent floor to ceiling windows with massive blackout curtains. The living room was dark, I think the lights were on a timer because I couldn't find a switch or a remote. The large white L -Shaped sofa and loveseats formed a sort of circle. A single brick wall that the TV was on and a fireplace below it .The living room was as big as my apartment and the windows made the room feel infinitely larger till the point where my domain flopped and rolled like I was going to fall. This place had to be an architect's contemporary paradise. White and black marble tiles and a plush colourful Persian rug overlaid it. Bonsai plants on a coffee table and fancy abstract art on the wall.
Everything looked so expensive and luxurious. High ceilings and yellow lightbulb chandelier looked like something out of a chemistry class-like how electrons were arranged around the nucleus, disjointed, haphazard and glorious.
Warm yellow light turned on in the kitchen. I could see the light on the walls and floors, distant beeping of the coffeemaker turning on.
"Good Morning, little one. I'm surprised to see you out of bed so early."JiYong entered the living room in sweatpants, bare chested with a towel around his neck for his wet dark hair. He was holding a mug, steam rising out of it curling sinuously around his chin. There was a shiny gold watch on his wrist and a ring on his pinky. "It's too cold for you to be out of bed, baby, come here." The most impressive part of his look was the dragon on his chest curled against a daisy missing a single petal. That was the mark of the Kwon clan.
"JiYong..what am I doing here?"
"Today's going to be chilly,Jagi, I'll remember to lay out something warm.Didn't you want me to take care of you?" He pulled me into him by my hips. "Didn't you want me to make it better and take you away from all that? When Kim Sajangnim passed he gave me instructions to take care of you."
I felt a pang of sadness in me like a final sombre piano key. Like melancholic pantones surrounded me. When my father died of course he gave one of his trusted business partners the reigns over me. He always favoured JiYong like the son he never had, men in his world never saw the use for daughters. Even when he died, he loaded over me. "JiYong, where am I?"
He sipped casually,"Galleria Floret.Do you like it?"
"The view? It's lovely."
"Do you want to see it everyday? I can buy you an apartment like this one or…you can stay in this one with me. Just say the word and I'll get you anything you want. I want you to be comfortable." His eyes needled me. I could feel the subtle manipulation.
Of course I wanted to stay with him. JiYong was a pervasive demagogue and had the silver tongue. Of course I wanted to be taken care of and not have to worry. And here was this rich, beautiful man giving me everything that I wanted. I had amassed enough wealth from my own endeavours independent of the Kim syndicate to buy my half of the world, but I couldn't buy JiYong. I wanted him too. In my moments of abject loneliness I wanted him, I always had.
"How do you afford all of this? I thought you…did Father already leave you an inheritance?" I pouted looking at my reflection in the glass and JiYong. His broad shoulders and tiny waist. He was built and defined, smelling incredible like a forest and limes and warm linens.
He smiled over the rim of his mug. "I cashed in the shares he left me and now I own a major trading company and I dabble in architecture… that one right there with the red top, you can't see it very well now with the fog, that's the main firm I installed."
"So old money?"
He stepped impossibly closer to me, arms around my shoulders now, pointing to a building sunken below the all encompassing fog,"And that one with the green lights, I bought it with old money… and the bright yellow twin pair way over there I bought them with new money…and that grey one and the apartment complex way over there too. I'm gonna buy all the others and anything else I want to look at. I want to look outside my window and see that I own the whole skyline. Your father's company and all his shady dealings,I'm making them legitimate. It's time we become businessmen, and walk the fine line between our world and the business world, keep the drugs, guns and casinos but what about arts and technology. And I'll need your clean face to help me."
He came off with a hint of aggression and cockiness at the end, reeling it in to chuckle watching me struggle. It was palpable, I could feel it like a force radiating off of him, like an invisible force field.
He turned to sit on the couch, fluffy bedroom slippers with a flat G stamp on the soles. His ming tea cup on the coffee table,"won't you come sit with oppa?"
I sank next to him, having him pull me into his lap. I let him, dizzy from how casually exuded power and peace.I sniffled curling into his side, wrapping around his middle. He pulled the blanket over me, letting me relax and rest so happily satisfied. "Oppa can more than provide for his baby girl."
"Where did you go? I woke up alone."
"I was right with you the whole time. I went to the gym downstairs."
"Why don't you just stay with me instead?"
"I'm sorry my princess, oppa will adjust his schedule so baby girl can wake up with him, yeah?"
I wasn't sure if he was being sarcastic or not but he was making me sink so quickly into my small space. I just wanted him to be true. "Do you mean it?"
He smiled warmly at me,stroking my face with his heavy warm hand," Yes baby. Oppa promises. I'll have my assistant get right on it."
"Is she pretty?"
"Jimin is very kind and hardworking."
I nodded with a a tiny huff, thoroughly satisfied with the answer. Bubba kissed my forehead softly, praising me I only have eyes for my little princess, okay? I held his hand in mine looking at all the tiny faces that it reflected in the pear cut gem.
"Peridot, it's my birthstone. I mined it from a vein I own in Russia. Are you ever going to answer my question…if you want to stay here? Or are you quizzing me right now?"
"Quizzing."
I giggled burying my nose to his neck testing how comfy it was here. So far so good.
He cringed towards me complaining about how cold my nose was like a puppy. I just nuzzled into him deeper.
"Level with me, you know Bubba can take care of you all day everyday no problem, because I love you. But if I do this for you now, if I put you back to sleep in my bed, under my sheets, in the pajamas I bought you…all under my roof you can never leave me. Now Oppa can keep his babygirl safe, clean, fed and spoiled all day everyday no problem or you can go back to your designing job and leave all of this behind. I won't keep you prisoner and I won't taint your business with cartel problems, but when I love you so fiercely the way only I can do, you'll never want to leave. Now make your decision. "
"What if I want none of that?"
"If you want to leave right now then go. Leave. Date any pathetic little boy you want to but you'll be back because you'll want a powerful man. You'll want somebody to spoil you with love and affection, their time and companionship. With their money. You love the power I have, and the inch your Father gave you you'd have all that you deserve with me. You'd want someone to die for you or kill for you. Either way, such bliss. So if you leave me, it'll hurt when I'm right. When my love burns you up and when you're without it your ashen. Let me know when I'm in the ball park."
Homerun.
"So what do you want?"
"You know he was my father and as much as he hates the fact that I'm a girl, he put clauses in for me to limit your growth. Technically, I have more reigns than you do."
"I know. But I want you to have all. Be with me, let's rule these peasants together. "
"I was going to say yes before your big speech." He grinned swooping me up instantly with one hand, perching you on his hip while you vibrated in laughter. He kept kissing my cheeks, setting the mug down on the table and carrying me bridal style now.
"My smartest girl, my smartest most beautiful, most amazing girl. Come on let's get my princess something shiny."

autumn winds chapter one: missing memories.
The sky was a bright blue, periodic clouds floating by. The familiar scenes of the country side, the gentle breeze that blew the clouds through the sky, the trees swayed in the winds direction, all from the perspective of our antagonist, staring out of the van's backseat window, when our antagonist was told she would get to come back to their old home and neighbourhood, the word "excitement" could not begin to fathom how she felt. It had been exactly three years since she had moved away, three years since she stopped smiling, three years since she left her best friend behind, our antagonist shed a tear from those memories, but wiped it knowing they soon could finally Reunite and make up for lost time. Finally, the van came to a stop as it pulled into the concrete driveway, the two large white moving trucks following behind. In front of them was an old white two story house with a brown tiled roof. Three people then exited the grey van, a man with long orange hair that reached his shoulders, a woman with long wavy black hair and a 13 year old child with long orange hair and freckles across her face. The adults entered the house leaving our antagonist standing on the concrete pavement. [*Hiya! Name's autumn! Autumn windsfield. You might be wondering what's going on right? Well me and my parents just moved back to our old house. And our old state! My dad got a job somewhere far away from here three years ago, meaning we had to go with him. He eventually got fired and we decided to move back. This right here, is a cul-de-sac. If you don't know what that is, think of a keyhole right? Outlined by houses and driveways. Only one road goes in and out. That's what i call home! Anyway enough about my awesome life, I'm off to see the real reason I'm so darn happy to be back, my one and only all time best bud, frisk! Come on!] Autumn ran into the back of the moving van like she was running from zombies. She pulled her orange bike and helmet from the piles of boxes and rode it out of the truck hitting the road with the bell ringing slightly, "hey kid! Watch it!" One of the movers yelled. "Hey! Frank, a little reminder, we ain't gettin paid to yell at kids ok?!" Another screamed. Meanwhile autumn sped down the long forest roads [*WOOOOHOOOOO!!!!] Autumn's bike sped down a large dirt hill like lightening. Dust flying behind her as her bike road it's way towards frisks house. Autumns gripped the breaks and The bike came to a stop, the tires loudly screeching against the cold concrete pavement. Autumn out the bike down leaning against the metal pole of a street sign and leaped onto frisks doorstep, beaming with anticipation and excitement, she then proceeded to do her signature "ring the bell to the beat of cherry bomb by the runways" knock. But noone answered [*that's weird, frisk always answers after the beat drops, well she yells cherry bomb first. Maybe she's already at my house?] Autumn started to walk back over to her bike, picking it up but then noticed a poster on the metal sighn pole, [*was this here before?] she took it and began to read: "MISSING, have you seen this child? Age: 12 height: 4'4, Francis hope aka FRISK has been reported missing, having being recently orphaned, it's a tragedy, they have discarded their phone making it impossible to track them, if you see this child please contact local authorities" autumn's stomach dropped. [*no no no no no no...!! NO..!] autumn's hands gripped the poster as they shook, tears threatened to stream down her face from her blue And hazel eyes and she clenched her teeth trying not to frown. [*why...Why are you gone...?? I'm sorry frisk...I'm so sorry..This has to be a nightmare...Please...Don't be gone...] autumn's knees fell to the cold wet concrete pavement, it had begun to rain, autumn sat there on the cold pavement, the rain soaking her bright orange hair turning it a shade darker, she sat there, crying for her lost friend, after five minutes, she then got up and made her way over to her bike again, lifting it up, getting on it and riding home. When she arrived, dinner was almost ready, "hi sweetheart, are you ok?" Asked autumn's mother. but Autumn wasn't hungry [* I'm fine mom, I'm uh, just gonna go to bed..] Instead she made her way upstairs, to a white painted wooden door, faded stickers still remained, autumn turned the cold metal doorknob and opened the door with a slight creak, the room was still being unpacked, but otherwise it was just like how autumn remembered it, the walls were painted baby blue, the floors were oak planks, a dark oak closet stood beside autumn's bed, along with a small wooden chest at the foot of autumns bed,a white nightstand, a few shelves on the walls, a large window covered by orange curtains, a little desk stood under the windowsill, many drawings of pirates or TV characters still remained in the drawers, autumn felt tired, took off her shoes, changed into orange button up pajamas and flopped down onto her old bed. covering herself with the warm thick blanket, her head lying on the soft pillow, she looked to her side and saw her favourite plush doll, it reminded her of frisk, with it's blue button eyes, purple dress, brown hair and stitched smile. Autumn hugged the doll tightly, tears streamed from her eyes as she cried into the dolls brown hair. She looked up at the cream white celling, as she slowly fell into a deep sleep, still holding the doll in her vise-like grip. In her dream. She woke up in a wooden house, a chair next to a fireplace could be seen as well as a large table. Almost everything was wood. [*Where am i?] Autumn stood up and walked outside, Everything was purple bricks, well except for one Autumn tree. No sky, no grass nothing there's just purple bricks. Autumn heard a cry Over to her right, she looked to her right, She couldn't believe her eyes. She saw frisk, Frisk was alive, autumn knew it. Autumn ran over and out her hands on frisks shoulders, tears in her eyes. [*Frisk! Your ok! I thought you were dead! Thank golly i was wrong! You're really here!] But Autumn also saw someone else, a man with short brown hair and Rosey cheeks, wearing a purple robe with some kind of emblem on it, purple leggings and purple flats shoes. But Autumn also noticed he had a knife. Autumn immediately got in front of frisk and held her fists out like a boxer [*fat chance pal!] The man then spoke. "Give it to me" he said. Frisk then spoke up in pure fear "wh-what?" She said stuttering. The man spoke again getting even closer to frisk and autumn. "YOUR SOUL" the man then lunged the knife forward. Autumn closed her eyes waiting for pain, but nothing happened. she opened her eyes and laughed [*ha! I bet yo Mama coulda done better dude! Not even a scratch!] She was cut short by coughing, she turned around and her stomach sank. Autumn saw frisk laying against the purple bricks, blood pouring out of her chest. Autumn started freaking out while holding frisk close. [*Frisk!!! No! You can't die!!! I just got you back!!! Nononono!!! Please! Stay with me...! Frisk! Stay with me!! Frisk!!!] Frisk died right in front of autumn, Autumn lay frisk down gently then turned to the man with pure rage boiling in her blood, she got out her baseball bat, and lunged at him [*MURDERER!!!!! I'll kill you!!!!] But just before she could batter him, Everything went pure black. Then a mysterious voice spoke up. "You cannot give up just yet! Frisk is alive autumn, you need to save her. NOW!" A flash of yellow filled the void, autumn jolted from her bed. Sweat running down her forehead, the only sounds being her heartbeat pounding in her ears and the cries of the seagulls outside her window, tiny specks of dust could be seen floating in the beams of sunlight that shone through the cracks of the curtains covering autumn's window, autumn's breathing eventually calmed down as she held her chest with one hand. Autumn had no idea what that dream meant, but she knew one thing. She cannot give up, she must have courage.
To be continued...
[*Knowing that your best friend is still out there, fills you with COURAGE]

Top Cheap Basement Man Cave Ideas
Repurpose old furniture instead of buying new.
Gardener and designer Barbara Purdy converted a wood-burning fireplace to gasoline to make a cosy focal point within this room. I couldn't find myself hauling logs down the staircase, she says. Radiant heating installed under the wood-look porcelain-tile floor adds much more warmth. The sofa, a hand-me-down from her parents, was regained and layered with cushions. Tour this cellar on Online TV, and find more inspiration in our photo galleries of Barbara Purdy Designs, Budget Basement Decorating Tips and Suzanne Dimma's Favourite Dreamy Retreats.
Bright Laundry Room-Pinch pennies with MDF cabinets and add your trim.
H&H senior editor Meg Crossley turned this unfinished basement laundry area to a laundry oasis. Improper venting supposed the washer and dryer had to be transferred into the opposite wall, where they're currently hidden by bi-fold doors. Meg also added a convenient sink with a kitchen-worthy faucet, an upper shelf and lower closets for additional storage. A contractor cut door fronts from MDF, and then Meg additional Shaker trim for a custom look. To give the basement an airy feeling, the area had been painted white. Sico's Light Sugar (4150-11), an aged white, makes the ceilings seem higher without feeling sterile or cold. The cabinets were painted robin's egg blue to get a country-inspired look.
Bright Basement-Choose low-profile furniture to make ceilings appear higher.
A faux-brick wall, fireplace mantel, slipcovered sofa and classic finds unite in this rustic space. Meg cleverly concealed wiring and ductwork into a long, 40-square-foot closet behind the doors flanking the new fireplace.
Work with plumbing.
Placing this shower beside the pipes shaft made room for a freestanding sink in the small bathroom. New pipes was added in the laundry room, along with the HVAC ducts were raised into the ceiling joists to allow for as much headroom as possible.
Sleek Basement-Paint walls a dark and striking colour to get a cosy effect.
Stylist Arren Williams' basement was designed to be both practical and beautiful. A contemporary sectional sofa in a charcoal cloth can sit lots of individuals while two cane ottomans can be utilized as side tables or additional seating. To make the ideal setting for film night, Williams chose a heavy, full-height velvet curtain to block any unwanted light.

Best Basement Ideas For Man Cave
Dark TV Area-Accessorize with affordable vintage finds.
It appears counter intuitive to paint your cellar ceiling and walls in such a dark hue, but stylist Arren Williams kept the space glowing with mood lighting. The undermount light in the high-gloss storage units highlights our ranges, says Williams. This modern design has a masculine sense without crying out bachelor pad.
Playful Home Office - Embrace brick walls instead of drywalling above them.
A red accent wall adds the look of depth to the room and feels daring and cheerful compared to the basement's simple black and white plot. The gallery wall includes original drawings from designer Theresa Casey and her husband, Robert Gray.
Paint the walls and ceiling white to make a small basement look larger.
A finished basement feels like a backyard retreat as it's packed with numerous great design ideas. Floating walnut shelves, a gas fireplace with a rolled-steel encircle, and a textural shag rug are just a couple of the elements that elevate the distance.
Work with existing plumbing.
Putting this bath beside the plumbing shaft made room for a freestanding sink at the small bathroom. New pipes was inserted from the laundry area, along with the HVAC ducts were increased into the ceiling joists to allow for as much headroom as possible.

Small Lot Beach House
With interiors by Anne Michaelsen Design, built by Patterson Custom Homes and with architecture by Brandon Architects (recently featured here), this small lot beach house is located in Corona Del Mar neighborhood of Newport Beach, California.
According to the designer, the homeowners (an Orange County couple with adult children that live outside of the home) were looking for a relaxed California seaside/coastal look without being too obviously beachy. They wanted the home to be comfortable enough for everyday living, while still being elegant enough for entertaining guests or throwing a party. The homeowners wanted seamless indoor-outdoor living throughout the home which is achieved by steel doors that completely open up onto the front and side yards and a rooftop lounge with several seating/entertaining spaces, a dining table, and outdoor kitchen/BBQ which has views of the Pacific Ocean and beautiful Corona Del Mar.
Additionally, it was important to them to have interesting and unique interior pieces and styling in order to set the home apart from other similarly designed homes in the area. They love shades of lavender and purple, which you will find throughout the home sometimes in unexpected ways (for example, the marble shower has hints of purple). To complete the seaside look, the designer complemented purple with blues and greens in paint color, furniture, and decor throughout the home.
Find a comfy chair and have a great time seeing this beach house!
