A few weeks ago, a few of my danmei-loving friends and I got to talking about how much there is that we want to read, but that none of us have been very organized about keeping track of titles, fantranslation links, etc.

So, we decided to make a spreadsheet.

AND to combine every link we'd each separately stashed around on that spreadsheet.

The result is a list of 73 titles (currently 70 are danmei, 2 are baihe, and 1 is gen, reflecting our personal interests/preferences) with links to translations, some complete, some not. (as of 2/5/23)

Some notes:

This is specifically for English translations from Chinese titles. Though some of the links do include other works (for example, some translators also do Japanese, and some Carrds list fantranslations in multiple languages), we're English speakers who are interested in Chinese novels, so we focused on that.

Currently, this is mostly basic information (titles, authors, links), with no summaries, genre tags, etc. We hope to ultimately expand it but that will be a lot of work and the information is already available at the provided NovelUpdates links, so we encourage you to use those.

We make no claims that this list is exhaustive; while the first sheet lists the resources we had collectively already gathered, there's a second sheet with things we know of and intend to add.

We'll try to keep links and such up-to-date but if you spot a problem please let me know!

Note that to actually access the fantranslations, you'll often need to take additional action to read them - you may need to request access, or get a password, etc. How to get this access is usually included on the pages.

Known official translations are listed. We will not link fantranslations for titles that are out officially in English. Don't send them. Don't ask for them. We won't help you pirate these titles.

This post is not an orchid update! This post is about some research I have been doing in order to find this dendrobium moniliforme that I have been looking for. These are my current results. I just wanted to document them somewhere and Tumblr seemed like the best place. If you don’t care, scroll on, but if you are interested, then be my guest!

So in March, Seed Engei had an auction on eBay for this dendrobium moniliforme:

Sadly, I lost that auction. (Personally, I don’t like auctions and I wish people just sold everything for a set price!) Anyways, Satomi-san listed this den as “unknown” and said that it was labeled a chouzaki. Until earlier today, I thought that this was the name of the dendrobium moniliforme, but after doing extensive research I discovered that this was referring to the flower’s shape!

Apparently, similar to how Chinese categorize cymbidium petal shape, Japanese also do this with sekkoku (dendrobium moniliforme). So I discovered that the shape of these flowers is called 兜咲き kabutozaki or more rarely 筒咲きtsutsuzaki. (These Japanese readings may be incorrect.) 咲き means blossom or bloom which can also be pronounced zaki, which is where the chouzaki comes from, but I’m it sure what the chou is referring to, since tou is the Chinese reading for both 兜 and 筒. Anyways, 兜 means helmet, the helmet samurai wore in particular. If you look it up, you will see how the right and left petals of these sekkoku resemble the shape the of twin golden winged decoration attached to the front of the samurai helmets. 筒 means cylinder. You will be able to see in the pictures below how the flowers have a cylindrical shape from top to bottom.

So after looking through numerous photos of sekkoku with kabutosaki flowers, I finally found one that looked like it:

The flowers as you can see have a cylinder body with winged petals that flare out like a samurai hamlet! However the flowers here are a bit big and not as green as the one that I’m looking for.

Next I found a sekkoku called Okina. It had the exact same shape and color as the orchid that I’m looking for! Though it might be a tad less green and it doesn’t have the pink marking.

The only problem with this one, is that upon further investigation I found that that many other ones are more white. I also found three that had slight variations of the name:

As you can see in the first photo of the three, Ryokuou is not as green as the on I’m searching for. The one in the second picture Ouryoku (the kanji are reversed) is a good match, especially because it has some pink markings, but they seem to be in the wrong places (i.e. the tip of the petals and not just the center). But still it’s a beautiful flower that I would be fine settling for! The third one, Suiou, so far has the best green color, but at the angle that the photo was taken, it’s hard to tell what the flower shape looks like. Either way, all three could be possible names of the one that I’m seeking!

There is also a variation of Okina called Zuihou (or Zuikaku) which in Japanese is described as:

「翁」の実生の選別で、俗に「紅翁」と言われている。Translation: A selected seedling from 'Okina' which is commonly referred to as 'Beniokina' (Red Okina).

As you can see in the pictures below, there is a hint of red on the petals. The picture on the left so far looks to be the most accurate - the petals are a nice green and its center is pink, though it is hard to tell due to the blurriness of the photo. The one on the right has whiter petals with pink tips, but the center is pink! So that's a plus.

This next photo that I found is probably another selection from Okina named Midorikabuto (or Ryokutou). This flower has an excellent green color like the one that I’m looking for, but sadly it doesn’t have a pink center. Either way I would love to have it!

And lastly I found these photos of one a green sekkoku whose shape looks almost exact. But sadly there was no name.

So in conclusion I’m looking for sekkoku Okina. If possible one that is very green and has some pink markings like Zuihou, Ouryoku, or Suiou. If you have any of these and would like to sell me a division, I would be extremely grateful. If not, I can only wait until I find someone in Japan who can import it or an eBay listing. “Zuihou de Zhaohuan Shi” The Announces Japanese Dub Cast for Winter 2023

The primary cast, cast members, theme song, teaser trailer, and key visual (shown) for the Japanese dub of the Zuihou de Zhaohuan Shi (The Last Summoner) Chinese original net anime were announced on Thursday through the anime's official Japanese website. The Saigo no Shoukanshi dub is slated to debut on Fuji TV's FOD service in January 2023.

It's hilarious to me that when the same words in Japanese are often are used to describe multiple things (seriously - it wasn't all that long ago that there were four words to describe all colors. Ao [blue] is still frequently used to describe green [midori], and people just know that they're different. English is way worse, btw) that I am about to say what I'm about to say, but I find Chinese really hard to listen to. It's very nasal, it sounds harsh and dissonant, and well, just kind of lazy-sounding at times. Mostly, though, even though I can't speak Japanese all that well, I can usually understand it well enough. Chinese I don't know the difference between ANY of the phrases, or any of the rules. So, even with subtitles I tend to shy away from shows voiced in Chinese.

Still, I watched Tong Ling Fei (Psychic Princess) pretty much start to finish in one go and ended up really liking it, so even though the Chinese-produced anime aren't as common for the streaming services here in the west, I saw The Last Summoner and Googled it. Turns out the manga it is based on is crazy popular. I started reading it on MangaSaki and got hooked, so, I decided to give the anime a go, too.

It's surprisingly good. I thought they would go overboard with the fanservice on Dora especially but also Hana, and refreshingly it hasn't been anywhere approaching even normal by 2022's standards. The story is original enough that it feels like it's own idea, even though it's been played upon countless times. The penwork of the manga is what drew (see what I did there? nyuk nyuk) me in to begin with, it's pretty fantastic, and the anime looks incredible, too - I've gone back and watched the opening sequence several times.

There are definite pacing issues, though - some scenes go on for way too long and then resolve too abruptly, and it's weird to me how the episodes tend to break at unnatural-feeling moments. Ah Jie reminds me a ton of Shui Yin from The Silver Guardian (Gin no Guardian) lookwise and his mood changes a little too fluidily as compared to the manga, but even with all that it has been a pretty fun watch so far.

Mostly am just interested to see how well it will follow the source that is so well-loved or if they feel the need to put their own spin on it, and it's nothing that is going to leave too lasting an impression because as an anime it's better than most of what's out there, but still nothing overly earth-shattering. It's entertaining, though. I'm enjoying it.
