Edinburgh Festival and Fringe and Festival of Politics: Day 22 - 23
Oh I’m tired mate. It’s really had to keep up and with this final long weekend push ahead I hope I make it to Tuesday and normality. Someone said to me yesterday that it’s been an unremarkable Festival but I beg to differ. There’s gold out there but you need to look carefully. This is where research pays off. Thursday I was a guest at the Amplify Festival where Mihalis hit the back of the net…

Hey! If you don't wanna write this it's fine! But imagine like- girl dad Kazutora but his toddler daughter wears a tiger onesie because she's like 'omg dad likes tigers, so i wanna be one' and cue Kazutora just walking around with a little girl who refuses to take off her tiger onesie 😭🙏
Girl Dad!Kazutora w/ Daughter Who Has a Tiger Onesie
♡ SFW, fluff, fem reader, reader and Tora are married, pregnant!reader ♡
note: ahhh anon it's too cute 🥹😭✨

🐯 When you took your daughter out for a day of shopping, the last thing you expected was to walk out of the mall with a tiger onesie that was much too long for her, but the little look in her eyes when she handed it to you warmed your heart to no end so you couldn't resist.
🐯 She practically ripped open the bag when you two got home, struggling to walk around as the legs (and tail) of the onesie trailed behind her. Obviously this was a hazard so you did some major sleeve rolling so she wouldn't trip over anything.
🐯 When Kazutora came home from work, he was stunned and excited to see his little princess dressed up as a little tiger. He picked her up and put her on his shoulders, smiling gleefully as he carried her into the kitchen where you were.
"Baby, you didn't tell me you bought a little tiger home." He jokes. "Did you stop by the zoo on your way to the mall?"
🐯 He's absolutely obsessed and already thinking about getting a second tiger onesie for your soon to be son so you can have two little cubs wandering around the house, maybe even have a third baby?
🐯 Is he thinking ahead? Absolutely, but you don't seem to mind so 🤷♀️

All my homies that have died, they all watch me from the sky
Life can be fucked up, but I'm glad to be here
Looking for the love, but instead I see fear
Shawty saw my dick, like when headlights meet deer
I told her "Turn around", then I pulled her rear mirror
I told her "Listen up, like you got like 3 ears

Happy New Year, everyone. Please allow me to take a moment to comment on the recent news of Southside Johnny Lyon retirement from touring. I apologize in advance, this is long.
I want to thank John for all the cities played, miles travelled, songs sung, stories told, laughs laughed, and most of all, the enormous amount of music that we performed together since 1998. Even all our fighting and cussing don't seem so bad, now.
50+ years leading a band around the world. A contrarian from New Jersey without a plan. Jawdroppingly awesome.
South gave me a place to hang my hat immediately after I joined the band—his encouragement to be myself, and to "set a fire" under him was affirmation to me that someone wanted me around for a reason other than to just fill a seat. I was doing better than okay as a NYC sideman, making a living and playing with cool people, but man, I really wanted to be in a band. His commitment to the performative, put-it-in-their face, for-the-people, unscripted presentation of old school Rock & Roll meets Soul was gold to my eyes, and instantly drew me in. Never a dull moment, no pretentiousness, and no intentional showbiz phoniness allowed. Let the chips fall where they may—in real time, in front of real people. It was rare for a band then and it's rare now.
Thank god, he always had the songs. Great songs. Every show, Southside would sing absolute masterpieces written by the likes of Asbury Jukes co-founder Steven Van Zandt, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Leiber & Stoller, Holland/Dozier/Holland and so many more. And, South didn't just sing those creations, he lived inside them, interpreting the lyrics and melodies as he saw fit, in real time. Feeling each line of heartache and personalizing each phrase of hope and exaltation. Add in his natural "It" factor—few people can walk onstage like him, usually dressed like a high school guidance counselor on a bender, and immediately elicit such strong reactions by the audience—and well, the stage was his to own, to destroy or often, both. A performer unlike any other, period.
Alas, as the Frontman retires from touring, so does his band. The Asbury Jukes will be remembered as an entity that supported their leader with muscle, nuance, accuracy, looseness, virtuosity, encyclopedic musical knowledge and the power to turn on a dime when their enigmatic singer changed gears and courses—sometimes mid-song. The band was like a freight train, almost impossible to knock us off the tracks. The Jukes played with pride and purpose on every stage—be it in clubs, arenas, parking lots, boats, knockdown joints, stadiums or zoos (not kidding). A band for The People.
Too many great Jukes to mention, but I must call out my longest—tenured bandmate (he's got me by a couple of months), trumpeter/horn arranger, Chris Anderson. He and I were on the bridge that linked the classic earlier lineups with the present generation that we know today. We were given instructions by Johnny to help him go forward, and we accepted.
Thank you to our Manager, Harvey Leeds, for saying Yes more than No, and then figuring out how to afford Yes.
About fifteen years ago, South made me the bandleader. John and I had become songwriting and producing partners, and our infamously (let's call it dynamic) active friendship was a natural fit onstage, as well. I appreciate the agency that he gave me. It was like walking a tightrope every night, but hey—I always loved the circus. Following in the footsteps of former iconic leaders like Bobby Bandiera, Billy Rush and Little Steven, I was well aware of the legacy and weight Johnny was bestowing to me as his musical consigliere. I took it seriously in every spectrum of our band—performances, arranging, writing/producing material, studio work, art and business opinions. I'll always be grateful to have been given those keys.
A few things I'll miss:
—my many travels and talks with the invaluable Joe Prinzo, our Front of House mixer, Road Manager, and oh-so much more. Many, many days off in faraway places, drinking coffee, buying stuff, eating excellent dinners, talking about our families and scheming for the next cool thing for the band.
—our dear friend and lifelong roadie, Hood, who we lost in April of 2020. He joined the Jukes as a kid and worked for Johnny until his passing. For me, the band was never really quite the same after he left. His passion for the Jukes and knowledge of Rock and Roll was epic. A good man.
—the time spent on and offstage with my bandmates and crew. I love them all. We experienced life together in busses, airplanes, Econoline Vans and countless backstage greenrooms. Together, we watched each other's families grow, lost loved ones, felt the high and lows of the path we'd chosen, and a ton of bullshit talk about Chuck Berry, The Godfather, Coltrane, Pete Rose, politics, The Yankees and the Mets, and everything else. Much respect each of these talented, soulful and wayfaring warriors. Champions, all.
—writing dozens of songs with Southside, in the "Southside Johnny Suite" in my Queens, NY basement (just a couch to sleep on), surrounded by my kids's plastic toys and dolls, countless keyboards, and tons of yellow legal pads, napkins, hotel stationary—any piece of paper that held a lyrical nugget. Opening up each other, emotionally and philosophically—anyway we could to get a true line written. One learns a lot about each other in those situations. We wrote some stuff we're both proud of. Then, the dinners upstairs, cooked by my wife Constance, and the chaos of my daughters and a slightly fueled up Uncle Southside talking god-knows-what at the table. It was loud.
—I'll miss the incredible fans that followed and supported Southside and the boys for over 50 years. I've received so many emails, messages and posts from you, detailing your love for John and the band. So kind and warm to my heart, Thank YOU, for giving me purpose and such a rewarding career. It was an honor.
I'm not sure how it plays out for Johnny in regards to the "what now" part of his life. That's his tale to tell. As his friend, former employee and fan, I hope he finds some time to create more stuff and sing a bit now and then. It's my opinion that he has more to give, and I'll always support him in any endeavor. A friend, until the end.
Folks. Please let it be known that I'm not retiring from anything, but merely stoking the fire again for the next stage of my artistic life. I hope that you will find some time to catch me at a show or check out my music, new and old. I've always had an active musical life outside of the Jukes, and now that part of my journey is ramping up to something new and special.
All good things come to an end. Damn. What a ride.
God Bless Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes
Love, Jeff Kazee

Anthony's Stupid Daily Blog (872): Wed 7th Aug 2024
Edinburgh Fringe day2 and after checking out of the hostel (which I've noticed I always sleep very soundly in. You know how some people can't piss if there's someone standing next to them? Maybe I can't sleep unless there's someone asleep in a bed directly above me) I headed off for my first show of the day: Glitch. This was a monologue style play about a woman returning home for her ten year high school reunion and confronting her turbulent relationship with her mother. The actress was really good but unfortunately I could feel my eyelids getting heavy and I had to start pinching myself to make sure I wouldn't fall asleep. It wasn't because the story was boring or the acting wasn't good and as I've just discussed I slept like a baby last night, but for some reason I felt like I was about to nod off. Also to make matters worse there were arseholes drilling outside which made it hard to hear what the actress was saying as this venue had very thin walls as it's essentially a converted shipping container. Word of advice to future performers: set your play on a fucking building site because the noise from outside will create a perfect ambience and you won't need to hire a sound effects person. I still enjoyed it as the actress was very good I just hope she didn't notice that I was desperately trying to force myself not to nod off. I suspected that it may have been because I hadn't had a coffee this morning so before the next show I ducked into a cafe and got myself a nice strong mocha to wake myself the fuck up. My final show of this year's Fringe was just around the corner at Zoo Southside. This show was titled "The Signalman" and was about a train station signalman recounting the story of a recent derailing that resulted in many deaths right near his station. He confides in the audience that since then he's been haunted by visions of a shadowy figure standing at the other side of the tunnel waving at him and crying out "watch out". This was really well performed and the use of shadow, light and spooky sound effects gave off the impression that someone or something was constantly watching. The one thing that marred the show was that right near the end four old dickheads left just as the show was clearly coming to an end. They all were about seventy five and I suspect they only came into this show to hide from the Grim Reaper and left when the play started getting scary as they didn't want to drop dead from fright. I think the twist at the end of the play was that it was the signalman from the future at the other end of the tunnel warning himself about the upcoming collision or something I dunno. That's the only shitty thing about these shows at the festival it's not like you can go onto Wikipedia for a plot summary and you can't go up to the actor afterwards and ask what the play meant or you'll just look like an absolute moron. Well whatever it was about I enjoyed it and at least I didn't fall asleep or walkout with two minutes to go like a cunt would. I still had an hour or so before my train home so I went to a restaurant up the road from the train station and got myself a nice vegan burger and a beautiful non-alcoholic cocktail as I reflected on all the highlights from this Fringe. As much as I have enjoyed these festivals over the years I don't know if I want to come back again. The shows themselves are good but finding ways to kill time in between the shows is hard and also the amount of constant noise in the city and the rushing around to get to shows is becoming unbearable. I remember having the same feeling about London when I went there earlier this year to see AC/DC. It's a beautiful city but I think I've seen enough of it now and I need to start exploring some other places. At the very least I think I'm just going to reduce this visit to a one day thing. I'll get the train down at six in the AM and just spend nine hours going to show after show then getting the train back that night.

Yall probably not gonna like what I have to say about Christina but...
This show is all about digging deep into black folks ancestral memory and the generational traumas and how that presents, within a safer frame (YES, I said safer...) of magic (horror/adventure/fantasy/sci-fi). But... The clever thing is with Christina it’s not just addressing black generational trauma... But that of whiteness too. She aptly embodies that.
She comes from generations of white male sociopathy and narcissism. While there are cracks because she herself was excluded from certain aspects because of her gender, she’s still such a product, so ingraitiated in that generational culture, she literally does not have the ability to empathize with a black woman she has “feelings” for. The way Christina has been written, and this is true of whiteness...is as stunted in basic empathy that we the subjects/survivors of their societal callousness so often have had to have PHd’s in even to survive, even when actively trying to avoid it because of that generational pain. The mainstreaming of cultural bits like turns of phrases from black LGBTQ’s and black women especially is an attempt to tap into the honesty/authencity, that we literally have no choice but to be but they themselves have lost in the sauce of white Americanhood (remember Ruby’s co-workers’ trip to “the zoo’/southside Chicago?). When Abbey Lee Kershaw said she was the “ultimate Karen” you have got to understand that she is a rendering/embodiment of “whiteness” and how it operates. It loves appearances, consuming what is yearns for at all costs, but *also* doesn’t like to be thought of as simple callousness and desire. So, even IRL, you see these clumsy attempts to take on real human empathy. That is what Christina’s doing so far. And again it’s an *apt* visual metaphor for the hardheadedness of getting whiteness to have an iota of that basic human empathy. ...After so many generations of callous consumption and destruction of the other. I’m saying generational trauma is *our bag*. But whiteness? Also has a generational baggage that is still spilling all over the place.
-Hell, it’s the source of *our* bag. See: Trump and his followers and the social damage they have done for at least 40-50 years all because they crossed their arms in resentment of a black man’s poise and basic decency while serving, all because he didn’t fail at leading at so high a perch and was beloved while doing so. This bad faith game that we’re seeing? Where it’s obvious that Trump couldn’t get a job at the most underpaid working class position, but he is flaunting his ineptitude and his enablers are propping it up like it’s actually competent? That is whiteness, throwing a tantrum, reasserting it’s “place” by being as awful and submediocre as possible while still being empowered. ...Even to the point of sabatoging basic comfortable life for all, including other white people, including(!) those who righteously support it. They are legit punishing society for having the audacity to love a black male leader. ...but I digress... Christina is childlike, cold, immovable, but also helplessly fascinated because she *is* whiteness. Whiteness cannot be moved unless it moves itself. But privilege renders it handicapped in that, ignorant of certan aspects of life and not so deep down, whiteness knows it. tl;dr Christina embodies the legacy of social/emotional IQ conseqeuences for generations of evil. She is Toni Morrison’s famous quote asking “Who are you without racism?” Who is she w/o her pursuit of power, at all cost? Anything? Nothing? I think *that* is the big question she was trying to answer in her pain cosplay. P.S. For those who don’t understand the term “whiteness” Here, I use it as an indentifier for the cultural marker/legacy of white racism. -Specifically, the American variety in trying to encompass a very long historical basis for an established series of behaviors and habits that continue/haunt/hamper/hinder/destruct to this day. P.P.S. Those in the tag who keep crossing their arms and asserting simple minimizing negative evaluations of the black characters’ motives and hearts are those holding on hard to whiteness. Because the humanity on display in this show is too much for them to face. They have to reaffirm simple denials of black humanity for their comfort.

Welcome to DC, Bentley & Beemer! These 3yo brothers have joined the Lemur Island habitat at the National Zoo so get to hang with ring-tailed friends Tom Petty, Southside Johnny, Bowie and Birch (and a few black-and-white ruffed lemurs with less fun names)...
Small warning if you had brothers like mine: there’s a video of Beemer stealing food right out of Bentley’s grasp!! (I’m not triggered, you’re triggered 😏) But the rest of the video’s cute and there’s more photos at zoo link below.
Happy weekend Tumblr! Hope you don’t have to vigorously guard your plate around greedy fam at picnics heh.
