They use a mixture of American and British slang, I guess you could say that she has a Mid Atlantic accent (accent with both American and British traits)

Xe enjoys annoying their uncle Dib. Dib doesn’t mind the tho.

Not sure whether to ask here or the other blog but-- I see that Psychonauts x Invader Zim crossover/au, Immediately think that Otto and Professor Membrane would be Science Pals

Thank you for giving me the excuse to say that in a universe where Invader Zim and Psychonauts exist together Otto and Prof Membrane are ABSOLUTELY Science Pals. Membrane and the Psychonauts collaborate sometimes, usually for sick as hell spy tech. Otto’s got the mental exploration and mind studies but Membrane’s got ROBOT ARMS that shoot HUGE LASERS

Prof Membrane encourages his kids to explore their psychic gifts so the two of them are somewhat familiar with the Motherlobe and have maybe even gone to Whispering Rock before. He thinks it’ll get Dib’s mind off of aliens and such nonsense, but joke’s on him, Dib finds Sasha Nein and they go into alien theory mode right on the spot bc they both watch Mysterious Mysteries

In this universe Zim exists too but Dib actually doesn’t recognize he’s an alien at first because Green People Are Just Normal in the Psychonauts universe. Zim probably exposes his secret in some stupid way anyways tho bc he’s Just Like That

AAAAAA THANKSSS, And sorry this took. I dunno. Weeks to respond to, but after frequent trial and error I could not for the life of me come up with any “tutorial.” 😔 I’m kind of a failure like that. I’m not even much of a “teacher”

You can take what I have though, even if it’s pretty sloppy and unfinished 😭 And I can try explaining stuff, but this premise is really broad 😔😔 I wouldn’t know where to begin. Any canvas with a pink background is the “new” stuffI tried drawing specifically for this ask, while a white canvas is old.

Sorry that u had to go off-anon though, and sorry if this is a bit of a hot mess that isn’t very concise or helpful and primarily just… nonsense. I’m sure better “explanations” exist. Again, I’m not a teacher nor a tutorial person, really

I drew up this random image at one point in the hopes that It’d be something?? But, tbh. It probably doesn’t help. So I have no idea if this breakdown even makes a lick of sense. I just know they consist of mostly basic shapes. I meant to go in more “detail” but my brain got destroyed.

Every part of Zim’s body is a triangle in some way. Like, if u look at that image maybe u can see what i mean but 😭😭 idk.

It’s mostly just, I suppose, a matter of remembering that despite the fact these are 2D characters that are extremely stylized, they do have some kind of 3D form involved at all times. I personally keep Zim as my “rule of thumb” basis or something when drawing Irkens. Everybody is just a fucked up version of Zim. The Tallest’s heads are just Zims, but longer. Or, Skoodge [not pictured] is just Zim’s head but wider (and he is ALL head pretty much).

There was one time someone asked me advice on how I draw the Tallest, and to this day I never finished it, and with how busted my mindset became towards my own work, i probably never will.

Sorry I don’t really get into the body much, but I tried to recently (as you’ll see) and didn’t get far.

But, kinda like the Zim thing, the Tallest are also basic shapes. They’re a bit weird on having triangles and circles though. Though, I suppose it would be more accurate to call them spheres, cones, and some cylinders.

Random aside: I think folk get stuck on the joints of their arms in relation to their shoulder pads a lot… I try to keep in mind that their arm joint is always locked in a single place, yknow, like actual shoulders. The pad just moves with the arm.

Sorry the drawing is so sloppy this is where my mind fell apart.

Uhhh the Tallest are kinda weird with their long necks and craning. I kinda see where the neck connects with the body as some kind of “pivot” point. That is, if I were to be a lot stricter with that dinosaur neck. There’s a reason that neck tends to be shortened or ignored altogether.

Zim’s eyes are a bit more self-explanatory being ellipticals (not so much circles tbh, but eh). While the Tallest have parallelograms (not rectangles, their eyes don’t have any right angles- i keep that in mind too) They’re also weird since their one of the few characters whose eyes don’t stick out of their head when turned to the side. But, they do curve with their head— but not when facing forward.

Tho sometimes they do wacky shit like this so they tend to break their own “rules” anyway. I dunno. There’s really no set right/wrong means, I just keep a lot of that minor stuff in mind. I think it all would just depend on what you’d want to do

Irken mouths are weird, a lot of the “rules” that used to exist like more strict geometric stuff doesn’t exist anymore due to art evolution. But, again, I really think it just… depends…?

Have no teeth, stretch the face, put the teeth at the bottom/top, don’t leave the face, break open the face, etc etc depends on what u want.

Anything I do at this point just came from watching too many clips or sometimes digging around the comics.

It’s ok I love questions!!!

2. I probably won’t be including any other fandoms as to not clutter it, as well as the fact I was kind going off a formula of nerd kid + his sister. No particular reason, just for a pattern ig?

The age differences between the kids r Raz- 10, Jude- like 12 (I say like as he doesn’t actually have a canon age lol), Dib- 12 like in the iz movie, and Dipper- 13. I made Dib taller to add variety to their designs when put next to each other and also because all of the kids in iz are basically the same height I thought I’d say fuck it and have some fun with it lol

(For simplicity, Ford will refer to Ford pines, and Cruller will refer to Ford Cruller lol)

As for dynamics, Jude and Dib would get along Rlly well, just kinda as an instant click type thing since they have so many similarities. They’re all definitely friends but I feel like Dipper and Jude would but heads the most. Dipper tends to be really cautious, and while Jude does exercise caution, it’s usually for more ‘nonsensical’ reasons. Jude has a more reckless idea of problem solving (ie wanting to just shoot the cultists and burn down their hideout in act 1) and that wouldn’t really sit well with Dipper lmao. Dipper also would try to like, assert himself as letter with all of his planning shit but it probably wouldn’t work that well. Jude and Dib are also the most unhinged out of the 4 so Dipper and Raz are like 🤨 a lot. Raz would get along with all of them very well, however there’d definitely be at least a little bit of “you’re like 10 how come you get to be able to do all of this cool stuff???” And the other 3 would ask him a bunch of questions constantly because “omg you’re really psychic???? Lemme take notes.” Dammek would try to lead them around or “supervise” them as like the “cool older teen friend” but he has even less common sense then the 4 of them and the worst advice— Dammek high school bullies Zim. Gaz, Frazie, and Joey would kinda just be like “ew it’s my nerd brother and his nerd friends.” But still hang out with them, Mabel on the other hand just regular hangs out with them bc she doesn’t want Dipper to go on adventures without her! The girls would get along pretty good as well, however I feel like Joey would be Kinda cold to Mabel bc she has a tendency to be a little mean to people when they’re more social or optimistic than her, but she would get over it eventually and they can talk about animals or sparkly stickers or something jfhdjdjd. Xefros is a little upset that Raz is psychic because telekinesis used to be his thing and now there’s a kid that’s like 4/5 years younger than him and better at it 😔 the 4 boys would probably follow Roxy, Ford, Sasha, and Cruller around a lot because they wanna! Do science stuff n go on adventures and missions! Stan would also try to have fun with the kids but in a Stan sorta way. Sasha would so get into an Argument w/ Prof. Membrane they would hate eachother— Any of the alien enjoyers would be SO STOKED about Dammek, Xefros, and Zim (even tho zim keeps insisting that he is, In fact, not an alien). Tbh Dammek n Xef probably already know what Irkens are and Zim probably already knows what trolls are (and would probably freak out if he found out the condensce/Betty Crocker was on earth lol) Raz and Zim also get “huh u guys sound similar” a lot (I wonder why D-: /s).

Thoughts on, Invader Zim Quarterly: Holiday Special

WEEEE WISH YOU A MERRY JINGLY WE WISH YOU A MERRY JINGLY!

Ahhhhh It’s out! I’m so excited!

But I always get excited when it has my man Membrane and my man Eric Trueheart involved with the comics. 

Also santa..   Tbh, I was excited and nervous about this quarterly. 

Excited because it has Membrane santa backstory...

But I was nervous because that it means they might bring back the santa-blob monster from the Holiday special on the TV... and The Christmas special is one of my least favorite IZ episodes...   I mean... I rewatch it occasionally, and it’s fun, but I’m just kinda used to IZ having more BITE in it’s satire if you know what I mean? The Christmas Special in the IZ universe doesn’t really say anything about the capitalism of Christmas... it’s not like IZ hasn’t made fun of capitalism before. (that’s the whole show)  The Christmas Special in the show just kinda fell flat of my expectations of what an Invader Zim episode should be....

The only thing I respect the Holiday Special for, is that it goes down the “Santa isn’t real” route in a kid’s show and sticks to it. (there’s no “real santa” that shows up and “solves everything”) All of the “Santa’s Helpers” confused the Santa mythos with the Christianity Jesus mythos. (”waiting one day for his return”) Which makes sense, since IZ is like dystopian future Suburbia Hell. I just kinda like that there’s no “real santa” that interfered to “fix everything” and that Zim himself ended up CREATING Santa when he didn’t exist previously. Like I find that kinda cool...

Other then that, I just kinda wanted something else from the Hoilday special then what I got. (It taking priority over scrapped episodes like “the trail” and “Ten minutes to doom” and “mopiness of doom” does not help it’s case in being one of my C-tier episodes...) 

So maybe this quarterly will fill the void of what I wanted out of a Holiday special? Well, let’s see. 

SPOILERS FOR THE QUARTERLY BELOW THE CUT

Ways to get Dana off-board immediately: Monster Santa is canon. 

I always never liked to view the special as canon for ways that it fell flat before.

And I had the excuse of saying that the snowman was an unreliable narrator and I could adapt it down the line in my fic as a different story. 

I just didn’t like the idea of Monster-horror-blob santa...  Like... Cool design... but he just kinda represents everything I disliked about the special...  (including the major inconsistency of when Tak’s ship got fixed...)

But then again.. I need to remember IZ’s lore isn’t as consistent as I think it is sometimes... 

Okay, fine. Monster blob santa real... what else you got for me, Holiday special?

(that’s how a lot of corporate faces are these days... they show some old dead guy who made the company as opposed to the son who inherited the Company.... Like everyone knows who Walt Disney/Mickey Mouse is, but unless you pay close attention to that kinda thing, not everyone knows who the current chairman or CEO is in the modern age....)

I just find that a bit odd. 

Anyways... I feel people can still do what they want with Membrane’s parents and get away with it. I’m not changing my “his parents were farmers” headcanon. Sorry comic..

I did find the stuff about Membrane’s parents a little weird... like I said regarding how Membrane’s face is the brand of Membrane labs...

Could be true that they were other scientists and that Membrane founded Membrane labs later... but that seems highly unlikely... 

Also... Why does the house look that hug when in the christmas special, it looked kinda like...well... just not that, and kinda more humble from the interior and not some big rocket lab...

So yeah... AMAZING character building for Membrane (which I eat up)

Anyways... The Quarterly was GREAT! 

I kinda find it funny the Zim story is the weaker one of the two again... But I honestly blame the Christmas Horror blob connection and the Christmas Carol parody. 

Or maybe my Membrane Bias is clouding my mind here.  I do have Zim bias but sometimes Zim can frustrate me. There’s just so many times Zim can do and say the same things you know? Zim is my baby, but sometimes his denial and annoyance with everyone can be very predictable at points. Zim was just way more fun in the last quarterly than this one. 

With Membrane it’s more of a blank slate what to do with him cause he ony started really mattering as a character since ETF. Yes, I do love show Membrane, but I admit he wasn’t exactly a character then. More of a presence and excuse for why Dib had access to lab equipment. With Dib’s Dilemma and this Hoilday special, the Quarterly folks seem determined to turn him into a fully realized character with the rest of the cast and I’m extremely excited to hear that!

1) Man, Blitzo really gets around, doesn’t he? I wonder how Stolas would react to Verosika... I want the two of them interacting, stat!

2) OMG, the faces in this episode! Blitzo’s expressions are as amazing as always, but the others are bringing their A game too! Moxxie, especially... XD

3) Ah, Verosika Mayday... V. M. ...You ain’t slick, Vivzie... :3c Also, she’s apparently voiced by Marinette Dupain-Cheng herself, AKA the main heroine in Miraculous Ladybug... Dunno how to feel about this, nice trivia... ^^

4) Blitzo being such a dad is amazing! ^_^

5) Man, between the furry callout (XD) and all the human disguises (!), it’s almost like this episode is REALLY reaching out to the fandom, especially the artists and self-shippers! ^^

6) Loona getting out of her sour shell and acting like the lovestruck teenager she is? Adorable! ^^

7) Vortex, my man! You’re cool in my book! Why were you already in a relationship, tho’... Still, can I hope for best friend Vortex? I REALLY want to see more of him, maybe helping Loona out in getting to meet new friends, like a wingman. Wingman Vortex! Who’s with me? :D

8) Ok, I REALLY wish I could see Richard Horvitz’s faces while recording Moxxie in his drunk stupor! ...what am I saying, this is Zim and Billy’s voice actor I’m talking about, he’s used to much more outrageous stuff! XD

9) Aw yeah: Millie to the rescue! What a gal!

10) Hm, that conflict between Loona and Blitzo didn’t exactly get a resolution, did it? Wonder if it’s going to be an arc, or it’ll get mentioned in some later episode?

So, this episode was... nice! Many amazing expressions, and more of Loona, who really was in need for some screentime. Tho’ I can’t help but feel like the conflict between Blitzo and Loona didn’t get to be as complete as intended, unless maybe it’ll be part of an arc involving their relationship.

Personally, while I do see why people see this one as their favorite episode so far (Verosika and Loona’s human form are the definite highlight), I still prefer episode 2, where the team really outdid themselves with humor and feelings.

My brain: Just say that you prefer episode 2 because Stolas wasn’t in this one already!

What?! Stolas had his lion share already, it was fair he got to rest for this one! ...tho’, I wouldn’t have minded a scene with him... -w-

Anyway, this is definitely a solid one regardless: more lore about the human world, and cool show for Loona and Verosika, who apparently will get to appear more! We’ll have to wait and see!

Thank youu! And I don’t think I got the time and strenght of will to draw all 5 boys- but I can kinda pinpoint the looks I have in my mind for them! Under the cut since it’s long!

Rin: -the only one who technically doesn’t have a casual outfit. He is the leader and next in “power” after all- so Neon selected mostly elegant clothing for Rin’s wardrobe.

-Lots of tasteful yet quite plain shirts, sometime suspenders or decorate vests and jackets/coats, dress pants just in case. Sometime they can also range into vintage fashion due to Neon’s taste- those are also the ones Rin minds less.

-This lack of freedom though lead to Rin exchanging outfits with Zimelu and sometimes even the others, so that the white android can change after leaving and returning to the mansion. He likes the freedom that type of clothing makes him feel.

Zimelu: -He also technically has a persona (”the bad boy”)  to maintain but Neon isn’t as strict with him- Zim still tries his best to follow the suggestions given, both out of respect for a “superior” and ‘cause well- he just isn’t as tough as he looks.

-His wardrobe would range from 70s punk style to today’s grunge style- anything that could give him “bad boy” vibes.

-Deeply though he highly prefers more elegant or even “cute” looks- if not a complete “prince charming makeover” (even letting down his mohawk into something that resembles Purlhew’s hair- just longer). For this Rin’s assigneded clothes are perfect- Eloni's shirts too if he wants to go for a “tough overall and cute underneath”

Purlhew: -Neon trusts them with their choices so he didn’t give them real suggestions. Even when they presented themself into a full floreal patterned skirt with matching blouse the most he criticized was to choose a plain top part instead to not over do.

-This blue android is into sober and serious looks, a lot into turtlenecks. Surprisingly enough they also love flower themed clothes and the 50s rockabilly fashion (sometimes even convincing Zimelu to match with them) especially high waisted pants and polka dots-

-They rarely go out dressed in such way though- they don’t like giving possible fans stuff to gossip about them.

Haym: -Neon tried to convince them that cute outfits didn’t make them look infantile or naive but he quickly gave up with how tenacious and against the idea the android was. They ended up on the compromise of some sort of sweet/gothic lolita look (elegant and bizarre for actual Haym, cute and sweet for their persona)

-Their clothes are all very intricate- lace and ribbons are the norm. The only things typical to the fashion missing are roses (Haym’s isn’t into flowers) and visible corsets (Neon prohibited them- for their sake). The intense ammount of ruffles are what they like the most- same with letting down their long hair from time to time.

-Even tho they love the unusual elegance of such style- they’re more for highly eccentric clothes- the type that more than on a person should belong in an art museum- we talking 70′s style mixed with Lady Gaga and the like lmao- let’s say they love to visit Eve for suggestions.

Eloni: -Due to his stage persona not being as specific as the others- he is mostly free in his choices and knowing him Neon just said to “just have fun” with it.

-Most of the cute things meant for Haym ended up in his wardrobe instead- so his it’s practically a whole rainbow of both saturated and pastel colors. Tons of mismatched socks and hoodies, t-shirts with puns or those lil texts with quotes and stuff- also Sayu merchandise ahah he a fan. Also likes to decorate both himself and his clothes with the stickers and pins from his collections (the latters also borrowed by Haym and Zimelu).

-Sometimes though he wishes he could look more serious- especially during the days in which he is most discouraged or doubtful- so he asks his bros to lend some of their clothes instead- Purlhew’s especially.

Long story short- Neon is just screen in hands everytime any of them (except poor Rin) leaves to have their free day or free hours lmao.

Probably someone already made something similar, but anyway, here we go with my version of some mer Zim AU (honestly i love mermaids i am totally in love with the idea aaaaaaa) The idea is basically about Dib finding Zim stuck in a fishing net or something, and trying to use him to convince Membrane that supernatural stuff exist, but obviously Membrane is too skeptical to believe him, and Dib keeps Zim on his bathtub until he can prove it, and it’s not like Zim really it mind tho, i mean, they don’t speak the same language so he don’t even know what a hell Dib is doing 90% of the time

 I dont have a proper name for that, so for now i am calling it “Ziren AU”, i had the help of my friend @ AroisuK (she doesn’t have a tumblr but you canf find her on twitter ) to plan some stuff and to come up with the desing (which she have her own version too, it’s really freaking cute aaaa)

I already know this, but it’s worth asking-

What are elements of the soft retcon you love and what elements do you still prefer from the original continuity?

AFTER OUR BINGE, I noticed a lot of things.

but im too scared to blast this to the masses cuz it involves some tinfoil hats on my part so 😭 It’s kind of long and dumb.

The soft retcon stuff I like is definitely the design overhaul. I dunno. I really like the more saturated and bright look. Both for the aesthetics and the characters. Though I’ve seen people rly hate that. …Not my problem though!

A BIG THING I LIKE: I think I like the soft-retcon Membrane family waaaay better.

After watching the main series’ I kinda noticed how much harder it was to root for Dib, or how kiiinda flat the other members of the family were. Don’t get it twisted, I liked ‘em fine as they were. They just didn’t really do anything for me. It’s definitely evident that JV and co didn’t quite pin down what they wanted for them yet. (This kinda thing is pretty normal for anyone I think, sometimes ur characters are just gonna be wips for a while, and IZ was cut off really fast)

The overhauls in the soft retcon (primarily in ETF) such as making Dib’s general motivation more personally driven, or making the family dynamic a little better (and cooler in some cases) I think makes them all a bit more palatable as characters? I dunno. Lol. I just like seeing more positive things. (I don’t view this as in-universe “character development” tho that’s kinda weird imo, sometimes it really just is easier to say that somebody just changed their mind). The Membranes in ETF definitely feel like a fleshed-out culmination of stuff that was getting rolling in the comics.

Even if the gainax ending in ETF punches me in the face.

(And believe me i got a myriad of issues with the comics, but those guys aren’t really one of them) 

The stuff I prefer in the original continuity though is pretty much everything and anything having to do with the Irkens and other aliens.

BECAUSE THAT STUFF WAS PRETTY GREAT and I think it got shafted pretty badly in the comics and ETF. I can see why though. I read some JV interview from 2015 (I think on IGN? Idfk. I should’n’t have been on incognito), around the time the IZ comics were getting started. Long story short, he wanted to use the comics as a means to address all the problems he had with the Membranes in the og series and kinda… revise them. Which, gr8 yay, they needed it imo

As for Zim? He said Zim wouldn’t change.

Call it my tinfoil hat moment, but I think that that mindset was exactly the issue… Zim and co. were VERY defined and fleshed out by the og series end (as wack as some later eps were gonna be), but I think just leaving them to the wayside like that as characters that don’t need change (i.e. that much attention) is exactly why Zim, The Tallest, and much of the other space-centric stuff kinda got warped and flanderized. Or, hell, not referenced altogether. Zim got dumber, the Tallest got dumber, and a lot of the other space things specifically involving ID2 kinda… phased out.

Sometimes what you remember a character being like, wasn’t what they were like at all. And if u don’t reaaally work with them, ur gonna exaggerate or even forget whole things. The Membranes were worked on with the intent of fleshing them out and reworking them to what we end up seeing in ETF.

Zim? He wasn’t. He was just considered fine as he was, and while I agree with that on principle, in the comics execution he doesn’t quite feel the same. He feels more like… maybe a caricature is too harsh? But. Definitely weird. I’m just not nearly as invested. :( (There are a couple exceptions, but. Meh)

But I should also mention in that same interview the point of the comics wasn’t really for lore or continuing setups from season 2, but just random anthologies and a sandbox to fix up some characters *cough* the membranes. Unfortunately, that didn’t include the titular one. Meh. What can ya do.

SO YEAH. ORIGINAL CONTINUITY ZIM AND CO? Yes. They WERE more fleshed out and defined. But plz, that doesn’t mean nothing else can be done with them! ya gotta actually work with them! Character expansion happens naturally. …Eh. What would I know? I don’t have a dang series.

This is kind of an aside: But I really don’t like the idea of trying to make the soft retcon retroactively fit into the old continuity yet have both things play out in the exact same way. Sometimes it makes sense, other times it just makes something get framed a whole a lot worse unintentionally by trying to deem it as “unseen character development.” Trying to tie everything together under a single path is kinda dumb imo. There’s no way to do that without making something a lot more FUCKEDDDD. Or way more complicated. IZ was workshopped waaay too much in it’s run to do that jfhfhchv

And, personally, I don’t really like making things more complicated tbh. Sometimes— as dumb as this sounds— not looking into stuff is much easier to swallow than trying to make everything work as a single unit.

All a soft retcon is is just: “things pretty much are setup the same they just played out a bit differently.” You may as well call ETF a soft retcon of Zim Issue #1 /s There’s just no way, man. God forbid this go into anime territory with “HERE IS A DIFFERENT TIMELINE” OH GOD NO!!

It’s ok guys really. Sometimes… things just be like that aight…

and that’s why at the end of the day we hand-wave it by not getting too deep, or pick and choose what we like and head out :DD

and let’s be real despite what i praise i don’t enjoy everything from the soft retcon, if my zim rant wasn’t enough. Like how i don’t enjoy everything from the comics or OG series. And despite my wording I actually don’t take all of this that personally.

…But it’d sure be nice if i could have all the good stuff from all of it mushed together. Gimme the alien lore from the og series, gimme the membranes and earth from ETF, and—

Actually, the way i see it personally (but i think your look at it makes just as much sense too just so you know!), skoodge i think would be very adamant ab them going to skool- it’s all in that it’s important for them to learn and grow alongside other earthlings (the smeets were born on earth, so they are actually earthlings too) and to better be… what’s the word? integrated? (or might that be the wrong term for what I mean asdfghj sorry if it is) with humans bc this is where they’ll live most of their lives… they’re no strangers to space tho, and their vacation time is mainly spent off planet, like they definitely know they’re not actually humans pff but yeah, Skoodge definitely thinks it’s best for them to go to skool- that’s not to say he doesn’t hold on to them extra tight when he hugs them goodbye in the mornings tho sobbb

So I LOVE that the movie actually made parts of the comics canon, from following the first half of issue 1 to moo-ping 10 in issue 34!

Zim’s base got a major upgrade, wow! The big glowing blue screen we all thot was the face of the control brain was actually zim’s screen for displaying the tallests’s coordinates. I was speechless when all those holographic planets came up. Speaking of control brains: even tho Zim’s perception of his judgment was skewered, it was interesting to have our theories of Tallests’s as figureheads debunked. The control brains really do seem to be computerized irkens obeying their every whim... interesting.

Seeing Zim finally break down was incredible. He becomes this ball of self-pity that of COURSE only Dib could inspire him to break from. and seeing his repressed fear of failure become his fuel to succeed?? That’s my boiiiiii.

I can’t believe we got membrane family drama! This was something we could only dream of and write fanfics of for the next decade or so.  Dib truly does want to save the world, but he wants to prove himself to his father even moreso. That fight in the first act was so raw, like when Dib said he wished membrane supported him and all membrane said was “Wishing isn’t very scientific, son.”.... O O F  destroy me w/ that angst pls. It was a smart move making dib and membrane’s conflict central to the story, I feel that Dib and ZIm’s dynamics can only take the plot so far. Dib’s character is more vulnerable and open, easier to explore and connect with. Zim is much more shallow- ok, not shallow, his character is complex and subtle, but susceptible to surface level presentation- but his repressive nature always keeps him in a bubble of denial. Even when it’s burst for him- or worse, he ends up bursting it- Zim will do whatever it takes to reform that bubble. For better or for worse, Zim’s gonna always have a one-track mind and same mannerisms and penchant for destruction. As much as I love Zim, there’s only so much material to get from that.

Soooo onto my dislikes...We got that sweet parental validation but at the expense of Membrane’s short-sighted disposition. I like the resolution the audience gets when we find he’s always been proud of Dib, just disappointed in his interests, but it bites he only supports Dib when he believes he’s hallucinating. It’s funny for a bit but it really sours the end. Stiiiiiill, it’s true to the nature of Invader Zim. Dib never truly wins and Zim is always ready to bounce back with another scheme, so I get it.

The clembrane gag got annoying for me really fast. Anyone else feel the same?? it left a bitter taste in my mouth that he existed as a hurdle for the siblings to go through, only to become a member of the family. It never felt earned, I was waiting for him to blow up or die halfway through the movie XD  Like, maybe his conscious decision to be good and defy Zim would have been cute if he actually had a personality? All he does is spout distorted reprimands and loves pudding. and his pudding isn’t even good!!! gughhhh :(

also the animation got funky in weird places. instead of using frame-by frame, there were periods the animation had puppet animation and it stuck out like a sore thumb. the tweening wasn’t bad, but they weren’t consistent with the rest of the movie. Reaaally threw me off ^^’ Maybe budget got tight in those shots so push came to shove (I could tell a LOT of love and labor went into the finale), so I won’t judge that much.  

uhhh this is getting super long so final thoughts: My baby gaz got her spotlight!! I loved hearing her maniacal laughter as she piloted Tak’s ship :’) She’s a good sister too, she doesn’t kick Dib when he’s down, but does get fed up w/ his impulsiveness. Gir is still our pure, insane boi and hasn’t changed a bit. He’s still got moments of competence in his crazy, bless ‘im.

I hope the open-ended conclusion leaves an opportunity for the show to continue :0000 nick pleaaassseee
